Book Description
Rick Joy builds with remarkable sensitivity, precision, and grace. The allure of his architecture is often quietly and seductively hidden in the sensual qualities of one's experiences: the sounds, smells, tactile qualities, and moods of his work. Granite crunching underfoot, the gentle trickle of water, and the lacy shadow of a mesquite tree all stir the viewers' sensations. "The simplest things can evoke the deepest feelings," Joy says. "The silence in great music is often more profound than the sounds." The nine buildings shown in thins, the first monograph on Joy's work, express his interest in making places that are transcendent moments of space, light, and matter. In each of the projects the physical landscape, its specific environment, and its rich history are revealed and celebrated. While many of the projects here use sustainable materials like rammed earth, Joy's primary interest is in the quality of the spaces he makes. He shows us how efficient and environmentally sensitive architecture can emerge as a by-product from a quest for the timeless qualities that are always associated with great architecture. Presented in the form of lush photography, insightful narratives, and revealing descriptions of his highly collaborative process, this book will bring one to a closer understanding of one of the most interesting architects practicing today.
Customer Reviews:
beautiful and precise.......2006-11-06
A great book, beautifuly assembled, that provides an inspiring overview of the work. Numerous photos of the built work come along clear and elegant graphics. Simplicity and beauty of Rick Joy's work seem to come through the little book. Thank you.
From Spain, a fan of Rick Joy.......2006-03-20
The book is very complete. Although nothing substitutes the visit of the buildings themselves, it is great to have such information about the very interesting work of Rick Joy: great pictures completed by texts and drawings.
For those who do not know his work but are interested in good architecture, where space, light, materiality ang gravity are so beautifully present, I advise you to buy the book and to travel to Arizona (I wish it was not that far away from Madrid!).
I hope the most recent work of Rick Joy will be published in the future so I can keep on enjoying from his architecture.
Un saludo: Diego G. de R., arquitecto.
not recommended.......2003-06-24
unfortunately the projects in this book are not that much appealing like the fantastic ones you might find in other series like the "american house"... the materials are simple i agree, but the plans are very poor, doesn't add to your data bank of ideas, the photos don't help alot, and frankly it is the houses fault anyway, the plans are even worse, the text is very limited.
I do recommed that you look somewhere else if you are looking for inspiration.
Rick Joy.......2002-10-24
A musician from Maine, who headed west and apprenticed to Will Bruder, the godfather of new Arizona architecture, Joy has built little in his ten years of independent practice, and only around his home base of Tucson. And yet, as this delectable monograph shows, he is a master designer. His houses-of raw steel or rammed earth-respond to the brutal beauty and intense light of the Sonoran desert, and, like Glenn Murcutt, he uses the simplest materials and forms to satisfy all the senses. In Pallasmaa's eloquent tribute and the superb color photos, you can feel the heat of the desert wind, run your hand over a rugged wall, and watch the earth change color as the sun sinks beneath the mountains.

Explore the authentic flavors of TRUE TEX-MEX cooking
"Ideals nourish the spirits, but food sustains the body that houses that spirit. Food keeps the spirit alive. The Wild Horse Desert provided very little for the people that roamed and settled this harsh, hot land. Yet, they survived, and in time, flourished. Their dreams tamed the desert."

Great recipes, easy to read, informative and deep.......2007-07-18
With so many cookbooks, the layout can really turn me off of a book. The first thing that struck me when I flipped open to a random page how it drew me in. Most recipes include a bit of the author's personal history with the dish and many introduce with the "old way" of making the dish as well as present a new way that is less labor intensive. Often she will follow up with a recipe for those who want to try the traditional method.
A very thorough book that explores local ingredients, explains when they were served, what you might find in your supermarket and then clearly describes how to prepare the dish.
I'm a recent transplant to Texas and have had my eyes opened to Mexican and Tex-Mex food. This book introduces Norteno cuisine that is found in many traditional border homes. I couldn't wait to try my hand at these recipes.
Also, if you're someone who likes to read cookbooks for enjoyment, you'll love this one.
Recipes from the Wild Horse Desert.......2006-12-11
Great cookbook for those that are looking for TRUE South Texas-Northern Mexico cuisine. It is beautifully written and a cookbook you will keep in your library forever.
Great Cookbook!.......2006-11-21
I am a beginning cook that moved from South Texas and love this book! Now I can make all of my favorites in my own kitchen far from home. The background Melissa gives is so interesting and it makes you feel like she is in the kitchen with you almost!
Outstanding, Authentic, and Beautifully done.......2006-05-11
Of of the few, rare, authentic looks at some exceptionally wonderful food. The book is beautiful, and enhances the feel for understanding the landscape and people that authentic south Texas ranch cooking comes from. Thank God Melissa is secure enough in tradition that she did not feel the need to throw Mangos in everything to prove she was a creative chef. I have pet goats that were adopted as orphans, and they are very sweet and loving, so I no longer eat Cabrito, but have had it enough in the past to appreciate the recipes.

Book Description
In pursuit of their animal subjects, artists Olly & Suzi start by situating themselves in the subject's natural habitat--the wild. They approach as closely as possible and, working in tandem, quickly capture their prey on paper, using the day's particular combination of paints, brushes, burnt sticks, natural pigments, even blood, and then offer up the finished portrait to be paw-printed, tooth-bitten, or otherwise marked by the animal for authentication. Their collaborators have included anacondas, crocodiles, polar bears, and great white sharks. Of course, occasionally a leopard decides to rip apart its own image, or a rhino devours the canvas whole. While their art yields paintings of extraordinary beauty and power, Olly & Suzi consider it performance-based and site-specific: sometimes the only thing they come away with from an expedition is their lives.
Spare, vibrant, and lyrical, the works that have survived Olly & Suzi's 15 years of adventures in such remote locales as Siberia, the North Pole, and the Galapagos Islands fill the pages of this equally boundary-defying book. Accompanied by dazzling photographs that document the pair's unique process, these paintings take the reader on a dynamic journey to the world's remaining, though endangered, wild places.

Wonderful, special... they are the BEST !.......2004-07-24
Honestly, i never heard about Olly&Suzi when my close friend, Bryan, offered me this book one year ago after reading an article in a brit mag...
til now i still can't take my eyes out of their work... the poetry, the beauty, the nature wild, theirs ideas and thoughts, the colors, the research, the creativity... theirs intelligence (artist's intellligence).. their sensibilities... those british artists get it ALL... TO DISCOVER immediatly... once you open this book, it is an absolute NECESSITY to keep on look to it... i loooooooooove them !
Olly and Suzi: Awesome, Display, Of, Jenius!.......2004-04-20
thank goodness we don't all listen to reviews like that below.... this book is anything BUT pretentious twaddle!
how can i describe it?.... it gives you so much - amazing photography, beautiful art, fascinating stories - and leaves you feeling positively up-lifted, excited by the world we live in and inspired to travel and take an interest in activities such as conservation.
olly and suzi are true artists, clearly passionate about the subject of their work. the work itself displays raw talent, honesty and beauty. couple this with the other wonderful elements of this book and you have a truly awesome document that i defy anyone not to appreciate.
pretentious twaddle.......2004-03-12
art is always subjective and individual views such as my own should only be taken in this context but these two pair of chancers really seem to take the biscuit.
forget your damien hursts this self promoting pair and their various hangers-on just seem to continue to exist in the ongoing absence of any real interest in their work.
for completists/students only i would suggest this book, a collection of childike daubings seems to me like emptiness masquarading as 'art' by a couple of pretty talentless pretentious students with travelust and a penchant for the goodlife beyond their ability to pay for it. i might well be wrong and they may be wonderful people.
to me stuff like this remains aesthetically empty unless associated with some spurious idea of post modernism (yet another art world scam to get your money). painting wise its just rot.
unless you're some kind of USA based tree hugger with a liking for wearing t-shirts emblazoned with lone wolves (sic) and grizzly bears then this humble reader strongly suggests you keep your money in your pocket!
remember when painters used to able to actually paint as opposed to come up with a 'big concept'? or at least remember when the 'big concept' was actually heartfelt and not some careerist blag on a way to climb the art worlds social ladder and live the life you really have no ability to pay for thru through the sale of your work and demand for it from the public?
or maybe, i'm just too much of an old cynic..
The Ultimate Coffee Table Book.......2003-06-10
I have been a fan of Olly and Suzi's work for several years since their exhibit at the Natural History Museum in London. This book provides a tremendous story to accompany the amazing art and photos. Ideal for adventurers, art enthusiasts, and animal lovers. Highly Recommended!
i want to hang out with olly and suzi.......2003-06-04
Simply put, this is an extraordinary book. A friend gave it to me and I do not know whether it is more a art, travel, nature, wilderness adventure, or photography book, because it defies classification, but in any event, it is a serious page-turner. I dont know where to start...the images from all over the coolest and most exotic places on earth, of some of the funkiest and loveliest paintings ever, are captivating. These guys live most children's dreams, they travel around, hang out with rare species of animals (some dangerous, some not), paint them and then get the animals to interact with the art - so they are at one with nature, creating stunning images and at the same time living at one with nature. A perfect gift for kids, visual artists, performance artists, photographers, or people with a sense of adventure or wanderlust.

Informative & Beautiful.......2002-02-03
I was searching for a book on desert homes and architecture styles. This book is broken into several chapters on homes around the world living under desert regions. Thoughout the books there are dazzling and breath taking photos along with informative background on every country and building construction for the desert home. I was pacticularly interested in the great USA (Arizona, New Mexico & California) because I am planning to build a home in a desert region. I needed a reference to help me understand and view a desert style of living and this book has helped. You'll find some interior decorating, color schemes, landscaping and several ideas of bringing the dry outdoors into your unique home.
I love looking at this impressive book, it sits on my coffee table for all to enjoy.
My southwest decorating bible.......2000-08-19
"Under the Sun" has become my southwest decorating bible. I bought the book when I was looking for decorating and architectural ideas for a desert home I was building. The book explores and exposes all the of varied and amazing orgins and styles of desert and southwestern design. The photos are stunning and intriguing and the text is rich with information and sources. I have since used the book for paint and decorating tips in several homes. This is one book in my library that has become a favorite loner, and has ultimately become my best gift book -- mostly to assure it will return to my shelf.

Book Description
For one week in August the Burning Man Festival in Nevada's Black Rock Desert brings people together in a spirit of self-reliance and creativity. Art has become the defining feature of Burning Man, as the festival continues to be a testing ground for a growing circle of artists seeking engaged audiences. Their most compelling works are large-scale constructions that are burned at the end of the festival, and radically altered vehicles, or art cars.
Art at Burning Man, like the experience of being there itself, is a way of being outside routine existence: People return home rejuvenated and inspired to seek ways to express the spirit of the festival in their everyday lives. For more than a decade, A. Leo Nash has been creating a photographic document of this work, and in his photographs we see the wellspring of a new art movement.

I just received this book as a gift. I immediatley sat down and slowly turned each page in amazement of what he has captured. I cried.
I'm So Buying This Book.......2007-06-29
This is seriously one of the coolest books I've ever seen in my life. I've never been to Burning Man (wouldn't want to), but these pictures are AMAZING. It might have been worth enduring desert discomfort dust storms and camping just to see the 2996 "Uchronia" structure-- wow.
An extraordinary view of an indescribable place.......2007-05-14
Nash is a great photographer, with a clear, timeless vision that you can literally feel. His photographs hold you and keep you looking into them, farther. This is another volume in the work of our best contemporary photographers, and an extraordinary record of art and a place we might never have otherwise seen.
Burning Man is often described as being indescribable, and for good reason. So much of the art created there is ephemeral, lasting just a few days before burning to the ground. An entire city of 30,000 rises, falls, and disappears. To some, it feels like a heartbeat, and to others, a lifetime. To describe it in words is nearly impossible, when so much quickly becomes the elusive memory of memories.
Through Nash's remarkable photographs, we see a decade of visionary work and creativity that physically existed for only a moment. Whether you've been to Burning Man or not, this book will fill you with awe, and longing for the place.
Book Description
This beautiful art book tells the story of the "other Southwest," tracing the history of centuries of conflict and resolution between Natives, Hispanics, and Anglos, as well as their respective artistic accomplishments. This far-reaching collection of artifacts invites you to explore the achievements and art of cultures that overcame unfathomable obstacles to build the Southwest that we know today.

OFF THE COFFEE TABLE AND INTO YOUR PSYCHE.......2007-08-07
Was the movie Chinatown fact or fiction? In The Desert Southwest: Four Thousand Years of Life and Art, Allan and Carol Hayes tell you the real story behind the water deal that turned Los Angeles into what it is today -- and about the century after century of history that preceded it.
In school, you were told that the valleys of the Nile, the Tigris and the Euphrates were the "cradles of
civilization," but did anyone ever tell you that the southern Arizona desert is considered the cradle of civilization in the United States?
Recent excavations indicate that people began living an agriculture-based lifestyle in the Tuscon basin four thousand years ago. Why and how did the dry, hard-edged, hostile desert become the place where millions of Americans want to live today .. a place where, for centuries, talented artists, engineers and craftsmen have created everything from sophisticated irrigation systems to magnificent pottery.
Don't be misled -- this book would look terrific on your coffee table with its stunning photographs by John
Blom. But what's best about it is not what it shows you but what it tells you. This is much more than a coffee table book -- the words and pictures leap off the page and into your psyche.
Read it and you will never feel the same about the desert southwest again.
A wonderful read.......2006-12-05
This is a treasure book for anyone living in Arizona or trying to know it better. What a great read: funny and studious. The authors present their opinions with joy and research and tell you why they ended up where they are.
A great keeper and a great gift.
History that reads like a Tony Hillerman novel, only funnier ...........2006-11-22
This is not a coffee-table book, although it would look good on any coffee table. It's a meticiously researched
history-anthropology-archeology book that reads like a Tony Hillerman novel, only funnier. And it's filled with wonderful photographs (both historical and contemporary),some of which show things like things you could actually buy.
Many people think the history of the Desert Southwest began with the Pueblos and ended with Indian Gaming,
but this book traces its history, art and culture back for more than 4000 years. And it takes the reader far beyond New Mexico and Arizona to amazing sites in Utah, Nevada, Oklahoma, Texas, Southern California and Northern Mexico.
My husband and I lived in the Southwest for many years and thought we knew a lot about the area -- but this
book opened our eyes. We lent it to Hispanic and Native neighbors, who said the same thing. I reccommend it to anyone as a fresh, readable exploration of a fascinating subject. And as a terrific take-along travel guide
to anyone planning a trip to the Desert Southwest.
By the way, if you're already into Pueblo Pottery, check out the first Hayes-Blom book, Southwestern Pottery: Anasazi to Zuni.
A Gem of a Book.......2006-11-21
A great book with lots of beautiful photos of new and ancient Southwestern pottery. The history of the Southwest's peoples is covered along with some photos. Overall, this book offers useful information for the novice as well as the professional. It is a must for anyone seeking to invest in ancient Southwest pottery.

Book Description
Every August for the past 13 years, thousands of freethinkers have trekked to Nevada's Black Rock Desert for a weeklong celebration of the new. The rules are few: participation and self-reliance are mandatory, money and spectators are not allowed. For a wild, anarchic, glamorous week, as many as 30,000 individuals have communed and shared their creations. The people who come include anarchists, Internet millionaires, ravers, gearheads, punks, hippies, academics, and suburban parents. And what they create ranges from a three-story temple made from discarded dinosaur puzzle pieces to a life-size whale on wheels to the bonfire of a massive human figure that is the culmination of each year's festival. The past two years have witnessed ever-growing media attention for Burning Man, and 2004's will be the biggest yet. For the first time there will be a book that captures the history, characters, and most of all spirit that have made Burning Man the most powerful underground idea to surface in decades-the new locus for Americans searching in new ways for community and meaning.

I tought I burned lots of men until I read Burning Man!.......2007-01-12
I just finished reading the day that John Law sued the other founders over the name. So what we they call it now?
For someone who would like to but cannot attend Burning Man it is fun to read. I did not go to Woodstock either. (Too pregnant.)
The book really is an underground networker's dream.

No one can tell the whole story, but to date no written account is out there to equal to this masterful work.
The story of a truly unique American arts festival.......2006-01-03
Burning Man is the arts/creativity/freedom/whatever festival held every September in the Nevada desert.
It started in 1980s San Francisco, in part as a reaction to Ronald Reagan's America. A man named Larry Harvey and some friends gathered on a San Francisco nude beach to burn a wooden effigy of a man (for no especially good reason). The event was "adopted" by various California punk and arts groups, like the L.A. Cacophony Society, and soon grew too big for the nude beach. A home was found deep in the Nevada desert, miles from the nearest civilization.
It is a huge, empty, desolate place, described by one person as living inside an ashtray. The wind blows constantly, sometimes up to 100 miles an hour, and within seconds, everything and everyone is coated with the same gray dust. Permits are required from the Bureau of Land Management, the official owner of the land, and from the local county governments, not always an easy process. As the attendance at Burning Man has grown over the years, from a few hundred people to, presently, 30,000 people, changes have been needed in the organizational structure of the festival. An LLC was formed to take care of the financial recordkeeping, which, for several years in the 1990s, was loose, to say the least. An unofficial police force was formed, to peacefully resolve disputes and to supplement the actual police force, there to keep things from getting too out of hand. Actual zoning has taken place, including the laying out of streets.
At Burning Man, self-reliance is expected by all participants, which includes bringing your own water. Everyone is expected to participate in some sort of art project; spectators are discouraged. "Art" does not mean a painting that is hung on a wall, but some sort of large, interactive creation that people can touch and feel, usually involving fire.
For those with any sort of familiarity about Burning Man, this book does a fine job at getting behind the scenes. For those who have never heard of it, read this story of a truly unique American arts festival. Either way, this is very much recommended.
This book ruined Burning Man!.......2004-12-03
I went to Burning Man for the first time after reading this book and it was exactly like the author said! It ruined the surprise and I went there totally prepared. He must be stopped from spreading such accurate, detailed descriptions of this mysterious event.
The best BM book ever, and guide to networking subcultures.......2004-10-23
This is by far the best book on Burning Man to come out for those interested in the history, economy, politics and detailed life stories behind the event. I hear that there are more detailed studies of the event coming out in the next year or two. I hope this book inspires more people, especially academicians, to keep thinking about this global cultural phenomenon seriously.
What I found especially useful about this book is that the stories therein constitute a case history for subcultural networking and community building. If you are interested in building synaptic networks between subcultures, this book could be a powerful guide.
This book illustrates the power of synchronicity and simple friendship. If Larry Harvey and Mary Graubarger had not come to San Francisco, had Larry not met Mary at Baker Beach, had the Cacophony Society not discovered Harvey's beach burn, would any of this have happened?
Though much of what came together may have been accident (or destiny), it is clear from the book that Larry Harvey is a true subcultural Faustian (in Howard Bloom's [Global Brain] sense). Without Harvey's leadership, and subtle and intuitive grasp of the nascent unconscious symbolic substratum that he had uncovered, the spiderweb of networks and relationships that followed his work probably would never have developed into anything close to the Burning Man we know and love. In short, it takes leadership and luck to build community.
This book is more than a book about Burning Man. It is a manual to building communities of cultural creatives everywhere.

When rock critic Greil Marcus asked 20 other writers on rock what one rock-and-roll album they'd want to take to a desert island, the resulting 20 fervent essays by the likes of Dave Marsh, Lester Bangs, and Robert Christgau became this engaging book. It's a brief but intense amusement to imagine spending the rest of your life under a coconut palm listening to The Kinks, The Eagles, Van Morrison or The Ronettes.
Book Description
A new edition of this classic of rock journalism that first asked the question: What one album would you bring to a desert island, and why?
In 1978, Greil Marcus asked twenty writers on rock--including Dave Marsh, Lester Bangs, Nick Tosches, Ellen Willis, and Robert Christgau--a question: What one rock-and-roll album would you take to a desert island? The resulting essays were collected in Stranded, twenty passionate declarations to such albums as The Rolling Stones' Beggars Banquet, the Ramones' Rocket to Russia, Something Else by the Kinks, and more. Universally revered as the ur-text of rock journalism, Stranded is an indispensable classic.

Message in a bottle.......2006-09-04
I am typing this review with an autographed LP cover of Something Else by the Kinks, with all Kink signatures, inclusive of Ray and Dave, and whomever else was there in front of the Warwick Hotel in the early '70's in NYC. I agree with Nick Tosches, what would I take with me to a desert island, assuming of course I could carry with me whiskey, '50's girlie pin-ups, and nothing else for day after day? How would I get a phonograph record player, little least electricity? What else has been released since 1979? Imagine, if you will, a group of the top record reviewers from the 1960's & '70's, thinking just these thoughts. A great message in a bottle from the best rock critics before they became industry shills. Picture yourself this - what are your desert island choices all these years later? I'm looking at Something Else, autographed by Ray & Dave, I'm with Janet Maslin. Oh yeah, and with Nick, pass that whiskey bottle 'round here, mate.
WHATS YOUR DESERT ISLAND DISC?.......2002-05-24
Mine is Van Morrison Moondance, Greil likes Astral Weeks, we both like this book. Its a must read if you are into music criticism. Its a must have if you need help finding a good cd.
