    Book Description

Developing Technical Training Second Edition A Structured Approach for Developing Classroom and Computer-Based Instructional Materials By Ruth Colvin Clark, EdD

The goal of this second edition of Developing Technical Training is the same as it was ten years ago: to provide a structured, research-based methodology for the development of instructional materials that most effectively convert information to knowledge for delivery via workbook for classroom training and via computer for technological delivery. But in the ten years since the first writing of Developing Technical Training, much as changed in technology-driven instruction.

The most dramatic differences are advances in technological delivery capabilities. Ten years ago most computer training was mainframe delivered. It was limited to text and to very simple keyboard graphics. Colors were minimal and there was no sound or animation. Simulations consisted of procedural demonstrations on the use of mainframe computer systems. Today, all that has changed. Virtually all the computer examples in the book have been updated to examples drawn from web-based training or CD-ROM.

Whether you are a technical expert or a professional trainer, this practical guide will help you use the instructional strategies that will motivate your learners. By using the systematic process addressed in the book, trainers and performance technologists can ensure positive learning outcomes that will produce superior bottom-line results for your organization.

5 out of 5 stars An Amazing Resource.......2006-06-06

I've been using Dr. Clark's method of instructional design since 1992 to develop training materials targeted at highly-skilled software engineers. Again and again, students have commented on the way these course materials are not only helpful during class, but also later as reference materials when they're trying to apply what they've learned.

Be warned: Developing these kinds of "information mapped" training materials requires more effort than simply throwing together some PowerPoint slides with a few bullet items. But trust me, your students will thank you.

    5 out of 5 stars Instructional Designer's Handbook.......2006-02-20

Dr. Clark's instructional methods in this book describe five different areas: facts, concepts, processes, procedures and principles of technical training. It summarizes and applies current research that illustrates instructional strategies allowing instructional designers to better grasp these training processes. I liked the way she applied these instructional methods in a clear-cut, uncomplicated way throughout the book.

5 out of 5 stars Required reading for any trainer.......2000-01-28

This book provides all the instructional design details for the five content types. It describes the what and why of instructional design and describes how to display it on paper and a computer screen. There is a full chapter dedicated to CBT design. I am recommending this book as required reading for all our trainers.

      Book Description

At a time when society is demanding accountability from the medical education system and residency review committees are demanding written curricula, this book offers a practical, yet theoretically sound, approach to curriculum development in medicine.

The approach described in Curriculum Development for Medical Education has evolved over the past ten years, during which time the authors have taught curriculum development and evaluation skills to faculty and fellows in the Johns Hopkins University Faculty Development Program for Clinician-Educators. Program participants have used the techniques described here to develop curricula on topics as diverse as advance directives, office gynecology for the generalist, a renal elective for internal medicine residents, and an office-based preceptorship for first-year medical students.

Short, practical, and generic in its approach, the book begins with an overview of a six-step approach to curriculum development. Each succeeding chapter then covers one of the six steps: problem identification; targeted needs assessment; goals and objectives; education methods; implementation; and evaluation. Additional chapters address curriculum maintenance, enhancement, and dissemination. Throughout, examples are used to illustrate major points. An appendix provides the reader with a selected list of published and unpublished resources on funding, faculty development, and already developed curricula. Curriculum Development for Medical Education is designed for use by program directors and others who are responsible for the educational experiences of medical students, residents, fellows, and clinical practitioners.

Six step approach systematically guides the process of problem identification, needs assessment, writing goals and objectives, educational strategies, implementation process, and getting worthwhile evaluation and feedback. Based upon Johns Hopkins Internal Medicine model but substantial utility for all medical disciplines. I will use it in redesigning curriculum at my institution. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Simple and Effective!.......2007-07-31

This is a MUST HAVE for presenters/trainers. An easy read packed with simple, powerful and effective training techniques. After years of presenting and training, I've finally found the basic "instuction manual" I've been looking for. Fundamental tips, presented in a way that is simple to grasp and just as easy to apply. Now that I've read this, I'm revising all my training materials. Not only are my presentations more effective and engaging for participants as a result of reading this, but they are much more interesting as a presenter.

In this short book, Dr. Joye Norris uses her long experience in adult education to show us a clear route towards learning. Reading this book is like taking a course with her! In an accessible and readable format, Dr. Norris shows teachers and designers of adult learning sessions not only how to, but also why this approach works.

I recommend this book to adult educators, to academics who teach adult education and to designers of training in any field. It will give you a sense of the arduous journey we who are concerned about learning, need to take to move from telling to teaching.

4 out of 5 stars Practical Guide for Training & Development.......2000-07-26

Dugan's book is an excellent resource for both instructor's and T&D managers. It is filled with useful information covering the entire spectrum of training in organizations in an easy to understand format. Despite it's relative age, the information is current and beneficial. I would highly recommend this book for anyone in a training position, and especially as a guide for new training managers.
