Beautiful pictures but damaged.......2007-01-09
I bought this for my father for Christmas. The pictures in the book were beautiful and the layouts were a nice added touch. However, the cover of the book was scratched and torn, like it had been mishandled. Unfortunatly, because it took so long to get to me, I didn't have time to send it back and get a new one. The book its self was beautiful however the condition was disapointing and destracted from the beauty of the book.

The book "A Little House of My Own" is the same book, but in color and better designed. And cheaper. Just sayin'.
A great little book.......2004-12-21
This book has whetted my apetite for building small, tiny homes for years. I highly recommend it.
A great idea is simply to make one of these places in the backyard someplace to keep warm while getting away from it all.

Tiny Houses, Big Ideas.......2000-10-03
I've owned Walker's book since I picked it up on a sale table eight or nine years ago. It's probably given me more enjoyable fantasy hours than any other book I own. I hope to build my own office/studio in the woods behind my house, and this book has fueled my dreams. I may never get around to building any of these structures, but I've been rewarded many times over by the inspiration of "Tiny, Tiny Houses."
These little houses are big on inspiration.......2000-04-28
Forty small, simple and wonderful homes presented in photos, plans and detail drawings by an architect who is an authority on American vernacular design.
Coverage dated.......1999-10-28
Who would think 1987 would look so dated? A few of the "dwellings" are amusing but the hippy look and scrap construction makes me think most photos were from the 60's.

Great for any age!.......2007-10-02
This is meant to be a survival guide for living on your own for the first time, but I assure you that it is much, much more. This book is useful for people of any age, even if you've been paying the rent for more years than you'd like to admit.
Everything from the expected info on nutrition and cooking (including microwaving real meals), shopping tips, getting stains out of laundry and a how-to on car repair thrown in for good measure.
I don't know about you, but Mom sure never told me how to recognize the symptoms of STD's, but it's in here, along with millions of other cool and useful things.
Buy it!
Perfect graduation present.......2007-05-29
This is a must have for high school graduates going off to college or moving away from home. We have given away a dozen copies since we gave our daughters a copy when they went off to college. Every one loved it and our girls still use theirs even though they are now married.
Where's Mom Now that I need her........2007-05-12
I wanted to purchase this book for my son who just finished his first year of college and will be in his own apartment at school next year. A friend had this book that was given to her 20 years ago. I love the updated version, and the fact that the book is in a 3 ring binder is great for adding your own ideas. I also purchased a copy for me and when my daughter goes off to college in 6 years I hope to purchase another one.
GREAT IDEA MOM.
A great book !!!.......2007-04-12
I bought this cookbook for my son, who is away at college and on his own. Not only does it have fast and easy recipes, (now that he is cooking himself...)but it also has grocery shopping tips, first aid, car and home repairs. I heard about this book from a friend and saw how many things it had for information for some one just getting to be on their own. A great reference book for any one!
Check it out. You will be glad you did.
Where's Mom...book review.......2007-01-05
This book is really great from all aspects...I like the helpful hints as well as the recipes...it all applies as we have our young people starting lives of their own out in the world of wonders.
I just happened to just give it to my son yesterday. He is in college several hours from home and moved into an apartment on his own. It was such a bonding moment when I handed it to him...what was his reply? "Mom...you really don't think you can be replaced by a book, do you?" Wow...what a profound moment! Well...as he's learning the lessons of life, this is an excellent resource tool for him to use. I plan on ordering three more for my daughters when they head out on their own as well!

The storytelling style and eye-catching design of the books make learning about these innovative brands stimulating and enjoyable.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent book!.......2005-06-09
This book can be finished in a day! I simply couldn't put it down. It's written as a story so you get quickly pulled into the storyline to find out the end. Although, you already know the ending...Starbucks is one of the most admired brands and successful companies ever known.
So how did they do it? This book answers this question and more. What I enjoyed about the book is that it opened the door to the heart and soul of Starbucks to reveal their evolution and foundation. As I prepare my business plan, this book has been more helpful to me than typical business plan books. A lot of times those books provide heartless examples of companies. Sure you've got a great idea for a product or service, but how do you translate that into a brand? What is in the best interest for your customer? After all, Starbucks just sells coffee and coffee related products - nothing extravagant alone, but the mystical & romantic experience surrounding their coffee is a distinctive brand that is difficult to match.
This book answers the Who? Where? When? Why? How? of the Starbucks development - their trials, errors and commitment to their beliefs. The concepts discussed in the book are things that I feel touch every business, yet this book provides consistent examples of how to address them.
Concepts such as:-
-Growth & development
-Branding
-Why you don't have to franchise to be successful brand
-Rewarding customers by first rewarding employees ("partners") and suppliers
-Turning down profitable alternatives if it sacrifices the customer's overall experience or a partner's view of the company
I must admit I have not read "Pour your heart into it" so I can't comment on any similarities/differences between the two books. What I can say is that if you are interested in creating a world-class company and want to learn how to infuse your company with a soul (rather than focusing on your product development) to ensure success, then this is your book!

Customer Reviews:
Skip this book!!!.......2007-03-23
For me, this book did nothing but waste my money. This book should have been entitled The Everything Destination RESORT Wedding Book because most of the information said "your resort should include..." I am not planning a resort wedding, and this book did NOTHING to help me. Save yourself the money, hit up the internet and do the research yourself. This book has nothing that you can't - and won't - find anywhere else. If you feel you need some book or magazine on destination weddings, pick up one of the many wedding magazines that are focusing on them rather than chucking out the cash for this. This book is especially unhelpful for those planning weddings within the continental US - just because it is still in the same country doesn't mean it still can't be a destination.

Motel Mania - Next Exit.......2004-10-01
I have read several of this author's books and they have never let me down. Sure, it's light reading. But there were lots of info that I found very entertaining (I am in the travel/tourist business). What I liked most was the way the author pointed out the different eras of the motels in the USA. He discussed the big chain motels as well as the small mom and pop operations. This book will bring back memories to anyone who stayed in a motel that boasted of having "air conditioned" rooms.
A Colorful Lightweight.......2001-10-25
I've been a fan of Margolies since his first book, and I ordered this with high expectations.
Unfortunately, this book is almost completely advertisements and memorabia. There is very little narrative. Like another reviewer, I was quite disappointed that there was only a sketchy outlining of the various transitions that motels have progressed through over the generations. I got the impression that Mr. Margolies probably had most of these old brochures, cards, maps, etc., and simply assembled these in a chronological format.
On the other hand, if you are a fan of Margolies's photography, his own photographs in the book match his earlier photographic achievements.
This book is probably worth the price of admission, but I'd like to see a more comprehensive history of twentieth-century hospitality industry.
Fun reading.......2000-08-18
Anyone who enjoys reading about roadside culture will enjoy this book. It brings back great memories of those family roadtrips and how exciting it was as a kid to stay in a motel. It also entices you to seek out the quirky and fun motels next time you're in need of an overnight stay. John Margolies is an excellent author and photographer. I highly recommend this book!
Spectacular photography and good historical summary.......1999-08-05
For all of us who stayed at the one and two story roadside motels of the 1960s and 1970s, this book will bring back great travel memories as well as educate us on the precurser to these lodging establishments. Fascinating and fast reading and it made me go out and locate some of the motels near my residence. The only down side is that it could have used a little more history on the early motel chains and the history of their demise. A section on motel bilboards would also have been entertaining. Otherwise, a great historical book.

A marvelous glimpse at "the home front" during WWII.......2006-11-12
Compiling 400 letters, Litoff and Smith give readers a very personal look at what World War II was life for American women at home. Reading them is an almost vouyeristic experience, as these women share their thoughts, struggles, personal victories and tragedies.
The book is divided topcially rather than chronologically, giving the reader an opportunity to focus in on one aspect of the war. For example, "I Took a War Job" focuses exclusively on the liberating and empowering experience women felt in working in the defense industry (and making a man's wages.) The most touching and strongest chapter, "The Price of Victory" dealt with the loss of a loved one - husbands, brothers, lovers. The letters are from all social classes, races and parts of the country, providing a representative view, and speaking to the commonality of experiences. It is a remarkable resource, a fantastic read, and a rich collection of primary documents. For the professioal historian, I highly recommend it. For the lay reader, it is as insightful as it is fascinating. Recommended.
An important resource.......2006-10-30
The letters in this book are divided into categories such as war brides, working women on the homefront, newlyweds separated by war, why we fought, the price of war and having a loved one away for so long, and courtship by mail. There's also one chapter that consists entirely of photos and photocopies of postcards, advertisements for things like V-mail and writing to servicemen overseas, posters, drawings, and newsletters. Although many of the concerns and experiences are similar, no two stories are exactly alike. We get a wide range of people, such as newlywed wives who had to cope with pregnancy and raising young children while husbands were away, wives who lost their husbands and often kept writing because they didn't know of their deaths right away, a family in a Japanese-American internment camp, a couple who went from friendly correspondence to a nationally-known breakup and angry feud to finally lovebirds again and a happily and long-married couple, a Quaker couple dealing with the husband being in prison due to his pacifist beliefs and refusal to serve in the military, wartime shortages on the homefront, and the often hard life many farmers faced during these years. The one thing all of these female letter-writers had in common, though, was that they were dealing with the absence of husbands, sons, brothers, fathers, and male friends.
However, this book didn't pique my interest quite as much as it could have due to there being just so many different excerpts; even with the longer sections, there just wasn't as much opportunity to really draw the reader in and make him or her fully connect with these longago letter-writers, the way there could have been had there been more longer excerpts (even with fewer letter-writers represented overall), with some shorter excerpts mixed in along the way. Although this is a problem with all such anthologies; as great as the material is, one can tend to feel that it's still not the full complete picture, particularly when the editors haven't included all of their letters and have even edited the length of some of them. It makes one wish one could read all of these letters written by these interesting people instead of just these relatively short samples. Still, all things considered, this is a relatively minor complaint, certainly nothing that should dissuade one from reading this fascinating book.
Nice easy read.......2005-07-02
I study all kinds of stuff from the WW2 homefront. I really liked this book. It's an easy read, however, you really get to know what it was like for the women who had to stay home during the war. I learned really early in my studies to NOT just listen to what the propoganda tells you. It was not all USO swing dances, troubles finding nylons and writing letters.
The only thing I didn't like about the book is that the letters are edited. I read the book "war letters" before this one and I was spoiled because the letters in that book are unedited and even includes spelling errors, etc but they are exactly how the soldiers wrote their letters. So when I read "since you went away", I was kinda disappointed that the author only gave you what they thought was important in the letter.
An Enthralling Collection.......2000-04-08
I'm very interested in the powerful tapestry of the US homefront during WWII. This book provides a wide variety of first hand accounts of what was happening and more importantly how people felt about these events. The power comes from the fact that the words were written at the time rather than as later rememberances tainted by subsequent experiences. The only selectivity is in the letters people chose to save. But I think the authors have done a good job in trying to mitigate this natural bias by drawing from a wide variety of sources.
AWESOME - EMOTIONAL - REVEALING - INFORMATIONAL - THE BEST.......1997-03-08
This book of letters is so revealing of that period in time.
It lays the emotions of the women left behind during war time right out in the open for all to feel and experience. This book has become a part of my life. I work at a college and when we have a program that needs a reading done I am always called on to read from "my" book of WWII letters from home. I feel like these letters are my children and each one is crying out to be heard and I really do hate to have to pick only a couple to read. This book is that good. I feel that this book should be read by everybody especially young people. I get very good response after my readings and some very emotional responses as well. This is a truly wonderful book and I recommend it to everyone.

How about the good old USA?.......2006-01-30
Good book oriented mostly towards foreign travel, but we know that many people want to take that long leisurely trip of a lifetime in the US. "Live Your Road Trip Dream" would be a great companion to this book -- and oriented towards US travel.
Good for retiring abroad only.......2001-03-06
Can't add much to the previous reviews, but be very clear that this book is primarily aimed at people who want to retire OUTSIDE the U.S. It also seems to assume that everyone has lots of money laying around (or own and can sell a home)and they can put that money into CD's and live off the interest. Not all bad, but seems to focus on the few areas of the world that they're most familiar with (France, Portugal, Mexico)
The Well Traveled Book..........2000-02-16
Wow! The cover of this book is tattered from all the passing around. It has gone from one family member to the next. Those of us who were not patient enough to wait our turn have purchased it. Three copies in all are circulating. I found it inspiring because she speaks to the adventurer inside of me, not my fear. Her approach is gentle, liberating, and comprehensible. She spells out the complex issues. The chapters cover the all important steps and questions about going abroad for an extended stay and whether or not it's right for you.
Solid, Nuts-and-Bolts Advice for Adults.......1999-02-21
Filled with practical advice covering both the philosophical ("Don't you love your country?" objections) and the practical (a recommended cat carrier), Knorr breaks a complicated, life-changing idea into specific, do-able tasks. Anyone who has thought about living overseas for months or years must read this book.
Beginning with a personality assessment for the would-be expatriate, Knorr guides the reader through a step-by-step analysis of moving overseas. As the title implies, this is a book for adults who may be encumbered with houses, aging parents, life-long living patterns and other apparent obstacles to making a major life change.
Knorr's cautious approach and practical information are designed to produce either a successful sojourn overseas or the avoidance of what might turn out to be an impulsive mistake.
