The Mentor's Guide - Feb. 20, 2003.......2003-02-18
This book provides the best definition of a mentor that I have come across thus far with the statement "...and at there best they inspire us to reach beyond ourselves; they show us how to make a positive difference in a wider world". It is an easy to read reference tool filled with applicable information about how to prepare for and what to watch for during your journey as a mentor. The author does an excellent job of inspiring a can do attitude by giving the reader the ability to use this book as a workbook to be able to work through real life experiences. This book is a must have for anyone desiring to be in a mentoring relationship.
A must read for mentoring!.......2002-09-30
I just finished my thesis on mentoring child care center directors. The Mentor's Guide was the best resource. My thesis quotes many authors but there was non better than Lois Zachary. Her book is the easiest to read and she puts into words what I was thinking. I can't say enough about the wealth of information, ideas, quotes and straight comments that I found useful in this book. If you are embarking on a mentoring relationship this book is a must read. Thank you Lois.
The Mentor's Guide.......2000-07-07
Lois Zachary has made a wonderful contribution to the field of mentoring. Her new book is an "easy read" with wonderful metaphors, appropriate emphasis on relationship building, clear distinctions between old style mentoring versus mentoring as a partnership, interesting examples, and useful exercises.
I bought the book out of curiosity rather than truly being interested in the topic. In minutes I found myself fascinated, and I even saw applications of the information to my relationship with my 10 year old grandson!

"What is 'effectiveness' in a family?" asks author Steven R. Covey. He promptly answers with four words: "a beautiful family culture." Building this culture is the primary theme of Covey's parenting guide, a manual based on concepts introduced in his blockbuster, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. Covey, a New-Age business guru and leadership authority, has consulted with the world's top corporate and political leaders, but closer to home he is the father of nine children. Here, Covey reinterprets each of his now famous "habits" (Habit 1: Be Proactive, Habit 4: Think Win-Win, Habit 6: Synergize) to apply to parenting and family-life issues. Covey suggests writing a family mission statement, implementing special family times and "one-on-ones," holding regular family meetings, and making the commitment to move from "me" to "we" as techniques to improve family effectiveness. Covey is a brilliant storyteller. By weaving the voices and anecdotes of his wife and children with his own inspirational and informative stories, exercises, and parables, he has created a book with something for all parents interested in enhancing the strength and beauty of their own families. --Ericka Lutz

Great book. Teaches you a lot about families and how to improve yours. Fairly easy to read and it has tons of examples to help you out. I got to remember to come back to this book before I start my own family and then continue to practice what it teaches. I've applied it to my family and can say it has helped.
Valuable CDs.......2007-09-26
Ordered the Steven Covey CD's to listen to and share with my husband. We have both found the CD's to be valuable to our ever changing family life. The discs are clear in their presentation of advice and give sensible suggestions on how to nuture your family in a busy world. Glad to have found this resource and happy to share it!
Revolutionary common sense.......2007-08-03
We ave a pretty typical family with two teenagers. I've read dozens of books through the years. But this is the best for someone with teenagers. I'm only on the second chapter, and it's already changed us remarkably. It is something you'll want to work through slowly with your family.
Awesome book.......2007-07-23
Borrowed this book from the library and had to purchase a copy for our family. Many good ideas and encouragement. Our family has used some of the ideas and we see good changes.
Recommend to everyone I know.......2007-07-08
I think this is a must read for everyone. I only wish I had read it sooner. I bought copies for my brother, and sister-in-laws.

Decent book but...........2007-08-12
but I found myself rolling my eyes at some of the analogies (such as describing why we fight as being because our 'self esteem bank account' is low and we want to make a deposit in it by arguing with a loved one). I did find some helpful hints about ways to diffuse an argument, but I did feel like most of the time the author wants you to 'give in' when arguing because he feels it is better to be loved than be right. I didn't feel like the author really gave any advice on how to handle serious issues where giving in isn't an option. For example, if your spouse is drinking too much and becoming belligerent should you decide that you like being loved more than being right and chose to get over the situation by making a 'deposit' in your spouses self esteem bank account so that they feel better about themselves and are less likely to fight? But to be fair, overall, the book is well written and easy to identify with thanks to the author's many examples, be they personal or from couples he has counseled. One of the best pieces of advice from the book was about calling a time out while arguing during which you spoon or cuddle with each other for five minutes and then resume your argument. Just like the author said in his book, when my husband and I tried this, we found that we no longer wanted to argue after the cuddling. And while the first minute of cuddling was awkward due to the argument, it really was effective in calming both of us down and putting things back in perspective. In my opinion this book is good if you are looking for a way to get over or completely avoid small arguments, but is not very helpful if you are looking to facilitate communication/get past arguments about more major issues.
Excellent!!.......2007-08-10
This book is fantastic for both partners of the couple to read!! Easy, quick reading and very insightful!
GREAT book. Hands-on, easy, to-the-point relationship rescue. .......2007-05-30
When I purchased this book, I chose it as an impluse buy in addition to another communications book that I thought would be great. Instead, after reading only a couple of pages of this book, I was floored with how quickly this short book targeted common communication problems with couples, and had easy solutions that you could start implementing right away. We have used the techniques in this book and find it very instrumental in saving our relationship. Our communication is much more what we mean to say now, and we have less tension in our commuunications. I highly recommend this book.
Definitely One of Many Have-to-Read Books.......2006-05-03
I am a Divorce Mediator in Oklahoma and recommend this book to my clients who are not divorcing, yet have issues conveying their needs or desires. Whether it is help with the home duties or consideration of situations that arise, this helps encourage couples to view each other as partners/friends/lovers. This book tunes couples into more intimacy by connecting emotionally. Doing little things matter most.
"Easy and Effective".......2005-09-18
It's easy to fall in love. However, it's definitely not easy to stay in love while we want to be ourselves.
My significant other and I have been together for a little only over 2 years, but we've been having trememdous trouble communicating, which has been a major cause for our constant arguements and conflict during the course of our relationship. I ordered probably almost five "relationship/communication" books on Amazon.com in hope of solving our problems. With the four out of the five books, I probably only read through the very beginning of it. With this book, as I started reading this one which seemed pretty short in lenghth, I wasn't too hopeful either. All I was interested in was "finish the book and don't waste the money." As I finished Chapter One, I was totally hooked. I proceeded to the next and next chapter and couldn't stop. I found out so many answers to the source of our arguement only from the first 20 pages. When my significant other came home the same night, I did a little experiment that I learned from the book so far with him who was already exhuasted from working late and feeling cranky. Surprisingly, it really worked. Not only did we express our negative feelings to each other but also gained understanding for each other. I was so excited and surprised! All of a sudden, I realized the major reason to our misunderstanding and resentment towards each other. This book is fantastic!
The author who is a psychologist talks a lot about his experiences with his clients and his past and current girlfriends. It shows that he truly understands the difficulty to cope with the problems in a relationship as a normal human beings like the rest of us, which is really important and also what makes his viewpoint convincing and powerful. In other words, he can relate to us.
I highly recommend this book to those who are in the same situation like I do with my significant other.

Dennis and Michelle Reina, principals in an organization-development firm, believe more productive and rewarding work environments will emerge if relationships that define them are truly built on trust. The problem they see is years of "downsizing, restructuring, and reengineering or of upsizing, mergers, and growth" that frequently result in minor misreadings of intention along with major breaches of promise--followed all too often by seriously diminished employee performance. The solution they propose in Trust & Betrayal in the Workplace is that leaders must develop a full understanding of the complex dynamics involved, and commit to practices that support building trust with employees. The book addresses the aspects of betrayal and trust, the bulk of it focused on "transactional trust" (which they define as "managing expectations, establishing boundaries, delegating appropriately, encouraging mutually serving intentions, keeping agreements, and being congruent in our behavior") and ways to build it among teams and groups as well as entire organizations. The authors conclude with a section on "transformational trust," the ultimate stage attained when trust within these levels "reaches a critical point and increases exponentially, becoming self-generating and synergistic." This is smart food for thought, supported by tools and techniques that can put it into practice. --Howard Rothman
Book Description
In today's competitive global economy, organizations sometimes must make difficult, even distressing changes. For them to be successful, trust is vital. After all, business is conducted via relationships, and trust is the foundation to effective relationships. This book is about trust; the power when it exists, the problems when it doesn't, the pain when it is betrayed, and how to restore it. Drawing on years of research and experience with organizations worldwide, the authors provide a simple yet comprehensive approach to trust that shows how to discuss it constructively, identifies behaviors that build or break trust, and describes steps to rebuild trust and sustain it even through periods of change. This revised, expanded edition features new examples and practical tips, tools, quizzes, and exercises to help readers create work environments where trust grows so that people feel good about what they do, relationships are energized, and productivity and profits accelerate.
Customer Reviews:
Trust & Betrayal in the Workplace: Building Effective Relationships in Your Organization.......2007-07-17
We've probably all experienced that really bad job that drained every bit of creativity, energy, and enthusiasm we had. Perhaps you had that overbearing boss who had unrealistic expectations or that supervisor who wouldn't just trust you do your work. Maybe you worked in a place where suggestions or attempts to solve problems were quickly quashed or met with anger.
Trust and Betrayal in the Workplace unequivocally illustrates that such situations not only make the job a hassle but also inhibit the potential productivity of all employees. Basically, as the employee realizes that he or she (or others around them) is being devalued, he or she becomes less committed to doing the best job possible.
Dealing with the resulting morale issue is extremely challenging. Even if the actual problem is addressed, often lost trust is difficult to repair. For instance, if the company attempts to encourage employees to report potential problems, few will likely come forward because they can't possibly believe that they won't get yelled at or have their issues ignored once again. Trust and Betrayal in the Workplace explains that this situation need not be futile. There are ways to rebuild trust and address past issues to create a stronger, more productive business.
A TOP-NOTCH BOOK...TERRIFIC FOR PRACTITIONERS!.......2006-09-22
This is an excellent work that cuts through the typical babble that fills many pages of others books on the subject of trust. The content is exceeding meaty. The organization of the material is first-rate. One of the very best books on the subject. Highly recommended!
Trust as the Foundation.......2003-03-06
The Reina's develop understandable definitions and offer a well researched and thought out framework for both the development and practice of trust. They also offer practical and accessible vignettes and case studies illustrating the 'trust behaviors' that are so crucial to effective organizations and relationships.
Probably the most powerful part of the book is the section on Betrayal. Betrayal is a huge factor in our lives and we rarely talk about it. This book offers a language, method, and solution for both talking about betrayal and beginning the process of healing from it.
This is an important book for people interested in getting to the root of systemic problems in institutions, families, and relationships.
I highly recommend it!
Best of its kind!.......2002-05-23
Blown away! A huge help to solving workplace problems..help that carries over into all parts of life. The Reinas
have a great thing going. I would like to take their course and meet them in person!
A Solid Effort!.......2001-06-02
Dennis S. Reina and Michelle L. Reina discuss the importance of having a strong sense of trust in the workplace. They advocate avoiding both the major and minor betrayals that undermine trust. Creating an environment that promotes trust contributes to effectiveness in the workplace, especially during times of rapid change. The book discusses the nature and effect of trust. It is enhanced with a variety of exercises that promote workplace dialogues and help people think through the issue of trust. Many of these exercises are especially suited for teams, work groups and divisions. The exercises facilitate discussing and resolving problems in a more trusting atmosphere. This well-written, easy-to-read book is directed to front-line supervisors and unit mangers, although it will also interest top management and company owners. We [...] recommend this book to team builders in organizations of all sizes.

Customer Reviews:
Good if you'd like a quick read.......2004-01-22
This book is a quick read. It glosses over concepts that are covered in greater detail in "How to Win Friends and Influence People" by Dale Carnegie. If you are looking for the fast read, this is your book. If you are serious about improving work relationships, I'd have to recommend Carnegie's book instead.
Gilbert's communication miracles: Is it helpful or not?.......2003-10-19
I found this book to be quite interesting. I liked and disliked this book at the same time. I enjoyed this book because it gave me some insight on situations that could occur at work that I never thought could cause communication problems. It made me realize how many miscommunications could occur at work, other than with the normal miscommunication with a coworker or manager.
Gilbert describes the various communicaton problems that occur not only with a coworker or boss but as well as with coworkers of the opposite sex and with customers. Gilbert also went into detail about how miscommunications can be caused by being the opposite sex from a fellow coworker, employees that feel that their manager or boss is with holding important information from them or by managers or boss's showing favortism to certain employees.
Miscommunication can also be caused by a long term problem that has not been resolved among two coworkers, employees who feel that tehy are superior to other employees and managers who speak down to their employees. All of Gilbert's examples made me realize that even though I have never encountered such communication problems with coworkers, but also to keep my eyes open about future miscomminications which may occur sometime throughout my working experience.
Although I really enjoyed this book and found it to be helpful, I also found some qualities about the book that I particulary did not care for. Before buying this book, I read the quick summary of the book. I felt that the book was a little different form what was written in the summary.
I was expecting there to be more examples related to the situation that Gilbert had discussed. I persomally feel that if Gilbert gave more examples, it would be more helpful when you find yourself in a similar situation. I was expecting the book to give actual ways to handle situations. Like how to confront a coworker. I guess I was expecting a little too much from this book. Overall, I found it to be helpful and interesting and I really enjoyed reading it.

After fourteen years of working shoulder to shoulder with GE tough guy Jack Welch, Roseanne Badowski is not afraid of what she calls the "s-word." She argues that all of us are secretaries as well as managers. In Managing Up, Badowski leverages lessons she learned in building a stellar relationship with her boss. She offers smart and solid advice beginning with her "Can you start on Monday?" interview with Welch, and then turning to the skills of "navigating a boss Monday through Friday." The book' s chapter titles may sound prosaic, but her approach crackles with energy and fresh ideas. For example, she writes about trust by including "time-tested phrases for breaking bad news." She details the perils of being unprepared and puts in a good word for nagging. She also makes a persuasive argument for the advantages of cultivating impatience to enhance productivity. With splashy anecdotes and checklists, Badowski offers realistic and and disciplined counsel. Hero worshippers be warned: Although Welch wrote the book's introduction, Badowski is such an engaging no-nonsense advisor that she becomes the most compelling manager represented in her book. --Barbara Mackoff
Book Description
Everyone has a boss. And anyone who has aspired to move up the corporate ladder knows that their relationship with those they report to is crucial. In Managing Up Rosanne Badowski offers a straightforward, entertaining, no-holds-barred account of what it takes to make your relationship with your boss work to your advantage, no matter where you stand in the corporate hierarchy.
Told through rich, colorful anecdotes about her years spent working with one of the smartest, most demanding and dynamic business leaders of the twentieth century, legendary GE CEO Jack Welch, Badowski reveals the secrets to career success she has gleaned over the years. At heart, it’s about working with the person above you to create a productive and effective partnership.
Everyone is a manager, in one way or another, Badowski points out. She discusses first-hand what it’s like to have to be a mind reader, to anticipate the future, to plan for the unexpected, and to perform the impossible. With refreshing candor and a hint of attitude, Badowski’s advice is unlike any other. She advises us that “Impatience is a virtue,” to “Have no shame,” and to “Beware the too-quiet office.” Having worked in one of the most challenging, high-profile corporate environments anywhere, no one knows more about prioritizing, about making decisions on behalf of your boss, about sifting through a daily barrage of data and information, about multitasking at warp speed, and exhibiting grace under fire. Ultimately, Badowski says, excelling at what you do is about a shared passion for the job.
Managing Up is an invaluable guide for managing your career and juggling responsibilities with finesse and confidence. It should become a management bible for anyone hoping to get ahead in their profession.

Touch of fame elevates Welch's secretary's management tips.......2006-10-19
This is the reminiscence of a famous CEO's secretary, but it is better than you might expect. Jack Welch's former executive assistant and now author Rosanne Badowski spins anecdotes nicely. She also provides some possibly inadvertent grains of salt to season everything else you may have read about her boss. However, the idea that her warmly chatty observations can generate a respectable book is a tribute to the power of his legend - and her entertaining recollections. The image of a CEO whose secretary has to go through his trash to keep track of what he's been doing is very revealing. So is the idea of a secretary going behind her super-boss like Mommy behind a toddler, turning off faucets he can't be bothered to shut for himself. Welch acknowledges in the forewordthat he was a difficult, sometimes aggravating boss. He says Badowski, "lived and breathed work," and he praises her "loyalty, discretion and forgiveness" and well as her long hours, the care she took with confidential information and her talent for dealing with those who seek it. Badowski pulls few punches, so you may well agree with Welch's self-assessment after you read her book. However, Welch was also, on occasion, a brilliant manager, and Badowski became a strong one, too. We find that her up-close viewpoint includes some useful managerial insights and just enough gossip to keep your batteries charged.
Should have been called "My Life with Jack Welch".......2005-11-12
I was disappointed by this book for three reasons. First, the key points Badowski makes about "managing up" are tediously self evident. I already knew this information before reading the book. Second, the author teaches via anecdotes, which is not an effective way to elaborate on key points here. She spends too much time talking about her experiences with Jack Welch, in effect, snuffing out any worthwhile analysis. Finally, the book is laced with logical fallacies, contradictions, and improper advice. For example, instead of being "detail-oriented," the author advises her readers to aspire toward "perfectionism," which is both crippling and problematic. Overall, I felt like I was stuck at a dinner party across from a secretary, name dropping and telling me stories.
Right on Target..........2005-06-10
...which explains her success as a partner with Jack Welch.
Ro has hit the nail on the head here. It's not really about keeping his favorite yogurt on tap or catering to his needs, it's about removing the obstacles and the minutiae so that the leadership can lead instead of wasting time on those things that can be done by others. It's more about being a true partner than it is about being a sterotypical assistant.
My take on this book is that although written by an assistant, it is applicable to anyone who has a boss and who wants to be a solution instead of just an employee. Many people take issue with being asked to handle things that they deem are "personal" for thier boss. That conversation is a waste of time and will be a deciding factor on how high you will go in your career. Make no mistake, for leaders of large organizations, there is no distinction between a personal and a work life. They are one. So, Ro really points out that being a solution for Jack sometimes meant that she had to make sure those "personal" things were managed to completion by someone other than Jack. That freed Jack up to take care of business.
Pre-managing your boss is a great way to bring speed to the entire organization. Ro stated early on that she was a creator of time. That is one of the most powerful offers that one can make to their boss and their organization. Time is the most precious asset that many of us claim to not have enough of. By ensuring that Jack didn't have to sweat the small stuff and sift through unneccessary crap, she was able to create the time for Jack to become the leader he is and to bring more prosperity to the organization and the people who support it. Be it personal or business, she handled it.
Observe also, that while many may think of Rosanne Badowski as just an assistant who wrote a book, she obviously has enough insight and leadership skills of her own to be the assistant of one of the most powerful CEO's for 14 years and...she wrote a book about it. I am also quite sure that she has enjoyed some prosperity as a result of her success with Jack.
Insulting.......2004-11-03
I found this book insulting to women. The issue I have is that Roseann catered to her boss.. keeping his favorite yogurt on hand. I personally was completely turned off when she wrote that she had no family (husband/kids). If this is the kind of life you want.. to be the "left hand" of a powerful person, then this would be the book for you. I'd be more impressed if Roseann fulfilled her role at work AND had a family.
True Comments about Creating Success in any Organization.......2004-05-21
Ro writes a good book because it is all about what matters in creating a successful relationship with those above, below and beside you. Too often books are full of theory and go way too far on processes. The ability to relate insightful information using examples and stories is much more telling of a great communicator. Rosanne Badowski tells it like it is, was and should be to create successful relationships with those around us. Success is not only a goal but it becomes the "Passion" of those that strive for it.
To describe situations of success along with failures is telling that we must strive to do our best as long as it takes no matter how hard the path. Badowski invites you into her daily toils, strategic goals for success and her laugh a day world under Jack Welch. A great story about people and how they make the difference in an organization and how accepting those differences, makes a truly great organization. A great book for all of us to enjoy.

A lifesaver for drowning parents.......2001-03-20
I looked through dozens of books on parenting for help with my teenage son. I found, and used, lots of advice on logic and consequences, but each day he became more withdrawn and remote. This book could not have arrived at a better time. I read the first couple of chapters and applied the skills I learned. Within two days, he began to respond and his mood brightened. Within two weeks, we were talking the way we did before he became a teenager. The communication skills in this book not only make you a better parent, they make you a better person--one with the tools to respond to and address the stressful situations in life with confidence and composure.
A Must-Read for all Parents and Teachers.......2001-01-28
This practical book offers tremendous input for both parents and teachers. I have benefitted greatly from reading this book, and so have my 3 children and many students! -Tim Bedley Author of Mr. Tim's Tips for New Teachers
A Parenting Book With A Difference.......2001-01-27
As reviewed by Marjan Glavac for the Busy Educator's Newsletter.
Here's a parenting book with a difference. Right from the beginning, Page outlines three parenting styles as "My Way", "Your Way", and "Our Way" parents and their pros and cons. Through examples and exercises, the reader soon learns not only what their parenting style is perceived to be, but what it actually is. What is unique about this book over many other parenting guides on the market today, is that Page doesn't make a judgement about a person's parenting style. Instead, the book is geared to all three parenting styles.
Page presents his 12 communication skills in very clear language, and well organized in the following 3 categories: Skills for discovering what's on your child's mind; skills for overcoming your child's objections and skills for solving and making decisions with your child.
Through exercises, and a special section on role playing, Page reinforces his 12 communication skills for effective parenting. If you follow each of his communication skills and work through the examples and exercises, you will communicate more effectively with your children and be the parent (and teacher) you want to be.
Being the Parent You Want to Be.......2000-06-18
Easy to read, concise material on turning "wanting to be a good parent" to "being a good parent". Positive support and encouragement to try different techniques to communicate in a directive and positive manner with opportunities to practice your new skills. Good story example at the end of how one family practically applied the skills learned. Lots of good phrases to use. I've updated my skills and intend to use some of the strategies with my teens!

Good guidelines.......2001-10-20
Not the book to buy if you are looking for indepth information regarding presentation skills, but exactly what you need if you want to use for self-development or a good class outline on the subject. It covers all the main topics surrounding the subject, but doesn't go into great detail on any one topic. It is well written, easy to read, and provides many useful exercises.
Communication Skills For Everyday Use........2000-03-16
Effective Interpersonal Relationships is an excellent guide for developing or improving your interpersonal skills. It uses realistic scenarios that you can easily relate to. It shows you ways that you can build trust and respect through better communication. This book will teach you valuable skills that you can use not only in the work place but in your personal life. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book.

Excellent tape. Highly recommended!!.......1999-02-13
John Bradshaw identifies 10 reasons (which he calls demons) that destroy relationships, such as high expectations, inefficient communications, family rules, familiarity, need for parental-type of partner. Each reason made me take a hard look at how I contribute to the demise of my relations. Each reason is well thought of and hits home. John also points out to other works that can be a valuable follow up. I highly recommend this tape as a must have for those who are serious about relationships. John talks to you and not at you in these tapes.
Thank you John for a wonderful insight!
