Book Description

Out with the cool, in with the hot. These houses by such luminaries as Oscar Niemeyer, Gio Ponti, Geoffrey Bawa, and Isay Weinfeld are a perfectly seamless continuum of indoor-outdoor space. The author has traveled the globe to bring together a collection of luxurious modern homes that combine modern technology with local, often exotic materials to produce rich designs of wood, metal, stucco, and glass. Water and breezeways figure prominently, and "green" eco-conscious features emerge naturally from the tropical design environment.

This is a sophisticated survey of modern houses with open floor plans, exterior courtyards, sunny patios, and cool stucco surfaces all touched by the exotic flavors of their tropical locales. The combination of modern architectural form and tropical settings is extending and revitalizing modernism as never before.

Beutiful Book!
This is one of the few books that could be judged by its cover. It's 100% Tropical Modern. Good pictures, fair enough text. My only cons is not with the book but with the fact that despite that I love Modern Architecture it might not be the best approach for all tropical areas because of the accelerated deterioration and high-maintenance caused by the weather at this latitudes.

Book Description

This book documents the transformation that Balinese architecture and interior design have undergone over the past five years. Cleaner lines, more imaginative use of space, A-frame roofs, and the use of stone, concrete, and ceramic roof tiles are increasingly visible along with the traditional coconut wood, teak, and thatching.

Great photography and awesome scenarios. It really brings the feeling of being in Bali. And the decorations show the artistic side of the new interiors of the open living. It inspires my clients when they come inside my furniture store. Of the books I have from Bali, this is certainly the encyclopedia of interior design!

5 out of 5 stars There's no place like Bali..........2000-05-05

Many westerners have set up homes in Bali, which have long been a magnet for western culture-hound. Here, writer and photographer showcase what the island's most inspiring examples of contemporary residences, shops, restaurants and of course the beautiful resorts that Bali is renowned. The work is well researched, featuring architectural and interior detailing of cross cultural legacy and an amalgamation of both modern and traditional. The text includes little stories of origins and legends. And as always, Lucca Invernizzi Tettoni's superb photography, mostly outdoor shots of the creme de la creme of Bali's private and resort landscaped gardens. This work captured all parts of the Balinese tropical living experience, proving why Bali is often remembered as the place to rejuvenate the soul.

4 out of 5 stars Bali,Modern The Art of Tropical Living.......2000-04-03

This is just what the doctor ordered for enthusiasts of tropical decor and culture. By focusing on the use of modern (alibet, longer lasting) building materials with techniques designed to provide a tropical ambiance is neat. It's not something that I have found elsewhere. It would also be nice to provide some interior decorating schemes to be translated into the American shopping market using or importing accessories from the Bali region or using alternative sources for the "tropical" look from other areas, i. e., the British West Indies, the Caribbean, major U.S. catalogues, etc.

Thanks for the opportunity to comment.

    Book Description

Green Imperialism is the first book to document the origins and early history of environmentalism, concentrating especially on its hitherto unexplained colonial and global aspects. It highlights the significance of Utopian, Physiocratic, and medical thinking in the history of environmentalist ideas. The book shows how the new critique of the colonial impact on the environment depended on the emergence of a coterie of professional scientists, and demonstrates both the importance of the oceanic island "Eden" as a vehicle for new conceptions of nature and the significance of colonial island environments in stimulating conservationist notions.

WITH ITS RE-WRITING OF THE ORIGINS OF ENVIRONMENTALISM, THIS BOOK IS PROBABLY THE MOST SIGNIFICANT BOOK PUBLISHED IN ENVIRONMENTAL HISTORY IN THE LAST 10 YEARS. I FELT IT COMPARED WELL WITH SIMON SCHAMA'S LANDSCAPE AND MEMORY IN HELPING US TO UNDERSTAND THE EVOLUTION OF ENVIRONMENTAL CONCERN. IN PARTICULAR THE NOTION THAT ENVIRONMENTALISM BEGAN ON FRENCH OCEANIC ISLAND COLONIES, ESPECIALLY ON MAURITIUS, IS A REVOLUTIONARY ONE.

Modern classic tells the compelling story of Rima, a strange birdlike girl of the jungle, and Abel, the European who falls in love with her. The book owes much of its popularity to the mystic, near-religious feeling that pervades the story and the beauty of Rima's halting, poetic expressions.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars mesmerizing and otherworldly.......2006-08-15

This is 1 of my favorite novels!!! WH Hudson's prose is very lush: he pulls you into the hypnotic South American jungle and reveals a strange unforgettable tale of adventure and romance ... so unlike today's stale and predictable "stories." This isnt an easy read ... you'll need lots of time to savor the prose. As others have noted, the ending is underdeveloped (and a disappointment). I dont often buy books, but this 1 is a keeper!!!

      5 out of 5 stars HUDSON'S OBSURE CLASSIC IS A JEWEL !.......2004-02-26

This obscure classic is a jewel!I first read it when I was about 10 years old, and I never forgot the love story of Abel, a political refugee from Venezuala and Rima, the last of a race of exotic, mystical, bird-like people. If I could rate Green Mansions past 5 stars, I would use all the stars in our universe to convince you to read it!

      4 out of 5 stars Romantic Naturalism.......2004-02-26

Hudson, a noted naturalist during the Romantic/Victorian periods, grew up in the wild Pampas, and this book reflects a fascination with nature that most likely began during his childhood. Themes of civilzation vs. savagery and the untouched beauty of the tropics vs. development are found throughout Green Mansions, but these issues are encased in a love story that holds notes of mystery, fantasy, and romanticism.

While the novel provides a good introduction to the naturalist writings of this period (and a much easier read than most of the more scientific prose being written at the time), I thought that the ending was not as developed as the rest of the book, in addition to being highly unsatisfying. The novel does, however, offer wonderful descriptions of the wild forests of the region, and develops fantastical characters, particularly in the case of Rima, the primary female character.

4 out of 5 stars Romantic and Superiority.......2003-03-06

William Henry Hudson's novel Green Mansions is an exotic romance that takes place in the South American rainforest. The novel is written from the perspective of Abel, a young man who had to leave the city he was living in for political reasons. During his time in the rainforest he meets Rima, who he describes as a bird-like girl, and her grandfather Nuflo. Despite these two, Abel mainly interacts with the Indians with whom he was living before he met Rima and Nuflo. The Indians are mostly referred to as savages.
Green Mansions mainly focuses on the intimation of love and death, and the romanticism of nature versus the disturbing influences of civilization. However, Abel does not see any living creature during his stay in the rainforest as equal to him. He thinks of himself as superior to the Indians, Nuflo, and to Rima as well. He bases his sense of superiority on a better education, a greater intelligence, as well as a better physical condition. This sense of superiority is kept throughout the novel. However, his arrogance is one way to deal with his insecurity about many situations. Abel only seems to feel secure if he sees himself as superior to everybody else. This is the reason why he defines superiority based on the situation. Sometimes superiority is referred to as greater intelligence and in other cases as physical superiority. The way he uses superiority depends on the way it is easier for him to define himself as superior.

5 out of 5 stars Hauntingly Beautiful Tale of the Rain Foest.......2003-01-31

I first read this when I was 13 or 14 and never forgot the story. I just reread it 40 years later while vacationing in Central America, the perfect place for a tale of the rain forest. The language is exquisite - not a quick read, for I wanted to absorb the beauty of the descriptions and details. I recommend this to anyone with an interest in nature, for it is not only a wonderful love story, but also a vivid description of the Venezuelan rain forest and its indigenous people.

Fantastic! As usual Loure' never fails to keep me interested. I loved this story of Randall and Jada so much I could not put it down. I felt like I was in St. Thomas. I wish I could read one of Loure's books every month just to get this wonderful spice I feel from reading her books. Reading this book was the best Christmas present I could have received. I can't wait to the next book. Keep them coming Loure'

      5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2004-10-19

I love how the author let Jada and Randall charcters developed. This was a beautiful love story. One on the best from BET books. Ms. Bussey I think I have read all of your books and love them all keep up the good work.

      4 out of 5 stars Never again.......2004-10-09

Jada Gracen's father abandoned her when she was eight. Her first, and only, true love abandoned her for his former lover. Her ex-husband abandoned her to indulge his selfishness. Her fiancé abandoned her for his ex-wife. And her job abandoned her by laying her off. In the words of a famous sailor, "She's had all shes can stand, and she can't stands no moe." Thirty-eight years old, Jada has closed her heart and refuses to be a victim of abandonment again. The perfect job opportunity has opened up for her in paradise-St. Thomas-and she intends on starting her life anew, man free.

Randall Larimore can't believe the love of his life, Jada Gracen, has walked into his office for a job interview twenty years after he broke her heart. He knows they've been given a second chance, but she's been hurt too many times to acknowledge it. Combining patience, friendship and love, he intends on healing her broken heart and earning her trust again.

TROPICAL HEAT is hot! Set on St. Thomas, Louré Bussey had me seeing, smelling and hearing the island. Watching the love blossom between the young Jada and Randall was truly beautiful. Once they were reunited, the transition from Jada refusing Randall's romantic advances to her pursuing their relationship could have used more development. Otherwise, TROPICAL HEAT kept me going. At first I wondered how Bussey would be able to redeem Randall after he left Jada when they were young, but she did a great job.

      3 out of 5 stars Okay.......2004-09-30

This book was an okay read. I thought the story at times was tiring and the going back and forth. I skip some pages and didn't miss a beat.

      Book Description

The rugged Florida troubleshooter Thorn is back in another high-tension story of crime, love, and revenge, described by the Chicago Tribune as "wry, vivid, wonderful. . . . A first-rate thriller!" In an exotic blue-water locale where greed and criminality thrive, the mysterious disappearance of Thorn's boyhood friend Gaeton Richards, an FBI agent, entangles Thorn in a web of violence and intrigue that takes him from seamy local bars to glittering ocean villas. Then, when Gaeton's beautiful sister becomes Thorn's lover, he finds himself facing a jealous lunatic stalking her, a rogue government agent involved in a murderous scam, and an unforgettable underworld of petty crooks, amoral hired guns, and dangerous losers.

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars Tropical Freeze.......2006-08-06

One can smell the salt marsh and picture the bad guys through Thorn's eyes.James W Hall is as good here as he has ever been.
A Hall reader looks forward, on a regular basis, to seeing what Thorn is up to next. Some graphic violence and some sexy stuff.

5 out of 5 stars On Thin Ice.......2002-04-30

In this, James Hall's second novel featuring Thorn, the author expands on the one of the odder heroes of the Florida Keys. Thorn enjoys being the odd man out, anti-authority, anti-employment and a bit to out spoken for his own good. Mix this with an instinctive desire to right wrongs when they present themselves to him and you have a natural formula for trouble and good reading.

This time Thorn's friend, FBI agent Gaeton Richards involves him in a very strange car deal (where the buyer tries to feed the salesman to the alligators) and then offers Thorn a job as fishing guide for Benny Cousins, a local political up and comer. Thorn declines (later he has to drop Benny in a hot tub to make his point). Benny may sound good, but he acts bad, and he is up to something more than a little fishy. Unfortunately, Gaeton, who was working undercover in the Cousins organization is exposed and suddenly disappears.

Thorn is drawn into a relationship with Darcy Richards, Gaeton's sister and the local weatherwoman. The quest to find Gaeton ends grimly and Darcy and Thorn set about bringing the guilty to justice. What neither realizes is that Ozzie Hardison, a somewhat mentally deficient Florida Cracker (self-described), who has a compulsive yen for Darcy, is convinced that, if he only could kill everyone she liked, she would surely fall for him. Ozzie is a loser for sure, but he adds some deadly complications. Between Benny and Ozzie bad things are bound to happen.

James Hall has a knack for pure storytelling. He paints with firm well-made strokes that make each character and every scene stand out from all the others. He uses a strong sense of humor to contrast perfectly with the grim and ugly parts. This type of story, the modern day heroic tale, is a challenge to write well. In order to make the quest for justice work the author must give away many of the plot's mysteries, hoping to draw us into the plot with suspense and ingenuity. Once again, Hall has proved himself a master of this genre.

5 out of 5 stars Fine, funny, suspenseful.......1999-08-25

This is Hall's second novel, Thorn's second outing. It is rich with minor characters and full of the elegant writing that marks all of his work. The book is about a scheme to smuggle into the US some very bad guys from other countries. Thorn stumbles onto it after losing one of his childhood friends who was an FBI agent working on the case.

There are some really funny scenes and some beautiful snapshots of Key Largo. He brings that place alive brilliantly. It's almost as good as Under Cover of Daylight and right up there with some of the later Thorn novels, Mean High Tide and Red Sky at Night (my favorite).

3 out of 5 stars Gangster games on the seamy side of the Florida Keys.......1997-04-04

There aren't many characters to root for in this story, especially the anti-social, anti-authority hero Thorn. Too typically, the characters for whom Thorn has a soft spot are murdered and his latest girlfriend is the sister of a childhood chum (she also nurses a grudge). However, to lift this novel from a lower rating, there is a clever underground railroad service that the bad guys offer to undesirables who want to disappear from their enemies. The title deserves some credit too for the double entendre applied to both a winter cold spell and the utilization of an ice cream truck

        Book Description

Echoing the raw vitality of Henry Miller, Tropical Animal brings the return of the already infamous Pedro Juan, the seductive protagonist at the heart of Dirty Havana Trilogy. Pursued by Gloria, a proud and sophisticated prostitute on a mission to curb his predatory instincts, Pedro Juan is holed up in his crumbling Havana apartment, painting, with a growing sense of melancholy as he observes the lives of the hustlers, hipsters, and hookers in the city below him. An invitation to Sweden, of all places—cold, unwelcoming, the antithesis of Pedro’s Cuba—gives him an official way out, and the phone manner of his potential hostess offers incentive enough for him to leave for the literary life in Europe. However, once there he finds himself haunted by memories of the passionate Gloria and increasingly uninspired by his new environment. Does Pedro Juan, legendary seducer and imbiber of hard liquor, finally have to admit that his game is over—to be replaced by this more balanced, more secure, colder existence? In tight, tough prose Pedro Juan Gutiérrez explores human animalism with a joyous fearlessness absent from much of our contemporary culture and sheds a brilliant new light into the depths and complexities of the soul.

5 out of 5 stars A Victorian lady looks at the history of Africa.......2000-02-23

This book is an extraordinary look at the history of Africa, which Lady Lugard gathered from countless sources, and one would imagine a great deal of it came from the British Library and from the archives of The Times of London, for whom she had for many years been the Foreign Political Correspondent. She had always been known to be an intensive researcher into her subject matter, and one wonders at the months and probably years she put into this undertaking, which became the reference work for so many future books on Africa. Lady Lugard led an extraordinary life and travelled the world on behalf of her newspaper. A little known aspect of her prominent career was that when she first started writing for the Times of London, she wrote under the name of F. Shaw, thereby trying to disguise the fact that she was a woman. Later of course, she was so highly regarded - it really didn't matter and she became Flora Shaw, a personal friend of many of the world leaders (one of her more frequent visitors in later life was Winston Churchill) and was regarded as one of the greatest journalists of her time....specialising in politics and economics. She became world famous when she was subpoened to the Jameson Trial and cross examined on the role played by the Chamberlain Government in the planning of the raid into the Transvaal Republic. Later of course, it became common knowledge that she was used as the go-between the Britiish Government and Cecil Rhodes, and received and sent the cruical telegrams, which resulted in the ill-fated expedition. One of the reasons the press and public were so fascinated by her at the time, was because she was a very beautiful and accomplished woman, and many admirers and feminists, maintained that had she been a man she would have been a British Cabinet Minister. She was a staunch imperialist and this point of view on politics, obviously comes out in her writing without any apology or even the slightest expression of doubt. This in itself holds a certain fascination to the reader of today after the events of the 20th century. So it is important to remember that she wrote this nearly 100 years ago, finalising it in 1905/6, shortly after she married Frederick Lugard (Governor of Nigeria and Governor of Hong Kong and a big imperialistic player in Central Africa in his day). She had had to relinguish her journalist career on marriage as it wasn't the done thing, in those days for a married lady to pursue a career - especially a lady who moved in aristocratic circles. However, what makes Lady Lugard's book so fascinating to read, is once the reader has been quite shaken by her positive and practical assessment of the benefits of slavery, the merits and demerits of Black Labour and Yellow Labour, and her other imperialist beliefs......she goes on to capture with meticulous references, detail and descriptive power, the greatness that Africa once was, and so reveal an enthralling story of a continent. The South African president, Thabo MBeki talks about the African Rennaissance starting in South Africa today....and sceptics might wonder "what" rennaissance, under the mistaken belief that Africa came out of a Darkness. Lady Lugard makes it clear that this was not the case....Africa was great once...and her message is that Africa can be great again. No serious student of African history, politics and economics can afford not to read this book.

This book is one of the most important books I have ever read. I constantly refer to it whenever I have the opportunity to speak in front of a group. Incredibly insightful, it makes perfectly clear what direction people of African descent need to be headed in if we are committed to positive community development. YOU NEED THIS BOOK! If anyone sees any book that is as important as this please email me to let me know.
