Book Description

In the great Zen tradition of teaching stories, Marc Lesser relates his own personal and professional trials as he navigates the delicate path of managing a successful business while staying true to his spiritual roots. Struggling through a difficult economic climate, he also faces the usual challenges of running a growing company – meeting payroll, balancing cash flow, hiring and firing employees, and maintaining relationships with vendors and customers. Guiding him through these difficulties while providing strength and insight is the practice of Zen. Utilizing his training as a Zen practitioner, Lesser learns to apply specific teachings such as the eight-fold path directly to work and life. In chapters such as “Work: The Impossible Request,” “Appreciating Uncertainty,” and “Accomplishing More by Doing Less,” Z.B.A. provides readers with intimate, helpful advice, while acknowledging the paradox of applying spiritual practice to the business world.

2 out of 5 stars typical feel-gooder.......2007-09-07

when you think someone has applied zen to business practices you think maybe someone has been able to put the zen into some perspective through the real world not just again put the real world into some perspective through zen. people in the real (or should i say ugly) world need to have a bridge built to get them half-way there with some new and very straight forward practices that can be applied. (so far) this book is just a reminder how everyone should practice zen - even busy business people.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2007-03-18

This was more about zen practice and ethics than it was about business administration. I was disappointed. You may not be.

5 out of 5 stars Z.B.A.: Zen of Business Administration.......2006-11-10

Marc's book is insightful and full of tips not just for business but for leading a better life. I really think the world would be a better place if everyone practiced his techniques.

5 out of 5 stars We are all Zen students. We are all businesspeople........2005-06-20

"We are all Zen students. We are all businesspeople." This is how the first section of this book opens. As for me, I am a Manager. Also I am a person in search for answers in my spiritual life, and I am seeking into Buddhism for those answers. This combination led me to read by pure accident an ad on Shambhala Sun magazine (highly recommendable, if you are into Buddhism, by the way) that featured Marc Lesser's Z.B.A. I ordered it and it didn't take long for me to get hooked on it.

Walking the reader through means of achieving the Buddhist Eightfold Path while at work, the book offers a refreshing perspective on how to bridge the gap between our "work lives" and our "personal lives", if such a dychotomy makes any sense whatsoever. A good example of how these two things are in essence one and the same is what Lesser makes of the purpose of Zen: "The purpose of Zen and the purpose of business practice is to develop and open, flexible mind, a mind that can deal with a world that is both solid and completely impermanent."

In the end, there are so many fascinating elements proposed by the author, that I cannot avoid but to feel sorry for having finished the book. I almost feel like re-reading it, and I do recommend that you check it out.

5 out of 5 stars At Last!.......2005-02-26

In this book author Marc Lesser has - at last - bridged two worlds that need to meet! Lesser is an ordained zen priest and a CEO of the innovative greeting card company Brushdance. His book demonstrates how to go about weaving the equanimity of zen practice into the stressed out world of work. With great clarity Lesser cites real world examples connected to his dual practices to illustrate key principles in destressing work. It is a refreshing point of view. --L, San Francisco

5 out of 5 stars Had it not been for this book, I would have been cheated..........2004-07-26

I'm a paralegal, you would think I would know these things. However, I was in a position where I knew I was being wronged, but would have to research and learn an entirely new form of law to make my case. This book had already done that for me. It has simple answers to complex questions; it is organized into a format which allows the reader to make educated decisions. I highly recommend this book whether you are in a situation now, or want to be prepared should you ever find yourself in a situation later.

5 out of 5 stars Employees' most valuable and complete guide: workplace laws.......2003-08-11

Even after working in Corporate America for several years as a manager, it wasn't until I started my own business that I started paying attention to employment laws. And then I was amazed at how little attention I had paid to my rights in the workplace when I was an employee! I now realize that I didn't know anything about my privacy rights, or when I was being illegally discriminated against or what to do if I got fired. Part of the reason was that I had been lucky enough to work for good employers (and especially great bosses) who were very fair and I never felt the need to understand my rights because they took care of protecting them proactively through their internal guidelines and implementation.

I realize now that everyone isn't as lucky when I started hearing the horror stories that some of my friends had to endure. If I had continued working for Corporate America (I started my own small business a few years back) I believe that eventually I would have encountered situations where I would need to know my workplace rights.

That's where this book comes in. It gives a fantastic overview of almost every law imaginable that could apply to you if you are an employee. It is a very detailed book with countless pages spent on comparing the laws as enforced in various states so you can find your own state law and see the details. A good example is the chapter on wages - there are tables comparing the rules for overtime, meal breaks, minimum wages, etc. for each state. In this chapter, I also found an interesting tidbit of information on meal and break periods. It describes the different situations under which your employer is required to pay for meal time!

The entire book is full of helpful and valuable information on your workplace rights. I personally believe that it is good to have this book handy even if you don't need it right now. It makes for interesting reading and you will feel more in control of your behavior at work and not as afraid of your lawful actions. Here's something else to think about - the book has information on the time period in which you can lodge a complaint against your employer after something unlawful has happened to you. Even if you decide not to do anything about something that has happened to you, at least you know the expiration date on your right to complain under the various circumstances!

This book also happens to be one of the more inexpensive books from Nolo. If you are new to Nolo books, you will quickly realize that they do a fantastic job of explaining the law in plain English. And they are very detailed. Enjoy!

This book is designed to help the reader understand his or her employment rights as they apply to specific work situations.

It opens with a section on Frequently Asked Questions about: inquiries that can be made during an interview; steps the employee can take after receiving an oral warning or being put on probation; and specific information regarding work as an independent contractor. It explains federal workplace laws-such as guaranteeing an employee's rights to be paid fairly and on time and to work in an environment without discrimination. It also addresses state regulations regarding such things as working in a smoke-free environment, your right to smoke, or whether an employee is entitled to time off from work to vote or to care for a sick child.

Included in the text is a complete glossary of terms and appendices identifying public and private agencies and groups and organizations that specialize in workplace issues.

4 out of 5 stars ABA Guide to Workplace Law.......2006-03-21

This order was received earlier than expected and has proved a useful reference guide.

4 out of 5 stars Issues In The Workplace.......2006-01-05

The issues covered include the Family and Medical Leave Act, harassment and discrimination, drug testing, the Americans with Disabilities Act, unions, worker's compensation, dress codes and worker's rights.
The publisher should look at issuing a new edition of this. The information is valuable, but readers need to have confidence that they are getting the latest, most up-to-date advice (- 1 star).

3 out of 5 stars Better than most other offerings.......2005-10-25

First, remember that the book was written in 1997. It's dated. It also appears to have been organized by dropping the sections together from around ten feet above the pages while standing in a strong wind - that is to say, the format and sequencing is not what it could be these days.

That aside, it does cover the basics and tells you where to go for more info. It is clear in what it covers and it covers a reasonable range. If you need a basic, small backup copy on US labor law or reminder of what the major laws are and where to find info, this would be an excellent book to have around. If you're looking for an indepth review of anything or the latest laws or case law or State law you'll be sorely disappointed.

3 out of 5 stars American Bar Association Does FAIR Job at GUIDE!.......2005-02-16

Only 2 Stars goes out to the American Bar Association Guide to Workplace Law... After prevailing in the Cannice vs. Norwest Bank, et al. Case in the Southern District of Iowa Federal District Court, I learned a great lesson about workplace law-especially as it relates to discrimination and disability harassmment. The Book is certainly better than others but doesn't do enough to include topics that pertain to specific cases and the law. I'm sure that it serves some justice but leans more towards the coporate defense angle. I'd suggest reading the book and taking it for what it's worth. It's an easy read with enough references to law to get you started. As for an individual who is being discriminated against-my suggestion is to spend your time and money in finding a civil rights or employment discrimination attorney that can do the leg work for you.

Barbara Fick is to be complemented for her organization and for her courage to put such a great deal of information into such a limited format. It won't be a movie of the week-but I'm certain it will find its way into the offices of many corporate counsel offices.

For additional discussion, please contact me, Peter Cannice, of Scottsdale, Arizona, at HorsePete@aol.com.

3 out of 5 stars OK, but really lacks the depth to be informative........2004-10-31

If you're looking for a general outline of federal employment laws, I would suggest this book. Overall, a quick read, but the use of common law abbreviations and inconsistant reference to what they actually stand for made it a little harder to follow.

However, if you are looking for some detailed information that is written without the "sometimes, however" and "some states" vagueness that can make you ask yourself why you purchased this book, then I would suggest picking another source for workplace law.

I purchased an older edition of this book back in the early 90's and it has been my "bible" on the job ever since! This book is in a straightforward, easy to understand format and contains invaluable information for anyone who works.

5 out of 5 stars By far the best book i've seen dealing with employee rights.......1998-07-20

This book takes you through the whole process of the interview right through making the decision as to whether your rights have been violated and what to do if they have been. This is a very easy to read book done in a very thoughtful way exploring whether contesting an employers action is a smart decision to suing the hell out of them for a blatent violation of the law. Ill never go unprepared again.

5 out of 5 stars THIS BOOK SAVED MY JOB!.......2002-07-20

I couldn't find any help when my boss started harassing me--other than quitting or hiring a lawyer. Reading one short chapter in this book quickly lead to finding a solution, and I resolved the issue myself! I still have my job and my paycheck! Jeane

      Book Description

"Written in clear, concise language without confusing legal jargon, Sack's book covers information that a woman needs not only before taking a job but also on the job and after leaving a job, whether due to resignation, firing or downsizing."

      Women in Business

Many women are not aware of their legal rights, nor do they know how to use them effectively. Labor lawyer Steven Sack seeks to remedy this by providing practical strategies and timely tips for virtually any workplace situation. Regardless of occupation, salary level, or experience, this book serves as initial counsel to protect and advise women on issues such as:
      - Equal Pay, Tips, and Wages
      - COBRA rights
      - Layoffs & Severance Packages
      - Part-time Positions
      - Sexual Harassment
      - Sexual Discrimination
      - Family Leave
      - Disability
      - Age Discrimination

Sack digests complicated court rulings and regulations into clear strategies presented in easy-to-read text. He includes checklists of suggestions and questions, sample letters, actual agreements, and documents used by employment lawyers, plus insightful comments and tips.
