Science of positive reinforcement.......2007-08-01
Aubrey Daniels offers an insightful look at the behavioral school of management, and its key tools: positive, and negative reinforcement. The book covers how to link rewards to behaviors you want to reinforce, when to deliver them, and how to design systems to support them. While not without its flaws, the book is well written and offers plenty of practical advice - if you're an aspiring manager, or a seasoned veteran, 'Bringing Out the Best in People' is a solid investment of your time.

This is an essential text for anyone who manages people. Daniels is clearly 'for' creating a workplace that taps the innate desire to contribute and against one run by fear. I've seen nearly 35 years of organizational life, as employee, manager and consultant. That's a lot of fads, slogans and philosophies. This book is the real deal.
When people are managed using these clear, rigorous, objective principles, stress and interpersonal barriers decrease, work exceeds expectations. I also recommend Dr. Marshall Rosenberg's "Nonviolent Communication".
Based on a flawed worldview.......2007-04-02
I started reading the book as a part of my personal development with the company that I work for. The book is founded in behaviorism, and does not stray from the concepts associated with this worldview. My issue with it is that I believe that people are more than a reaction to the things that happen to us. We have unique personalities, and they consist of more than the conditioning that they are subjected to. This psychology takes away the idea of free-will and choice, and eliminates personal responsibility. When it comes to managing people, I believe that these are important elements to tap into. This behaviorist approach to management may look good on the surface, and make logical sense, but is flawed by its nature, and cannot have any long lasting impact.

This book is a fine book if you are looking for the typical book written for lazy minds. The material is good, the presentation is great. However, there is a lack of references and detail that someone really interested in the material will desire. If you like pop-culture books get this one. If you want a terrific book that appeals to your brain then get the authors other book, "Performance Management." It is exceptional.
Must Have Book for all Managers, Parents & Pet Owners.......2006-01-14
I have used Bringing Out the Best in People throughout Latin America and here in the States for several years. When I have control of a client project, this book is required reading. I get groans at first from supervisors and managers, but it is amazing what happens after they read it. They come back and immediately start talking about NICs, PICs, etc. It is fun but keeps me on my toes from that point forward as they watch my every move!
Although Daniels talks of motivating and brining out top performance from individuals within organizations, the concepts definitely applies and should be used in personal/family relationships as well. The concepts even hold true as I train my dog and two macaws as uncertain/certain, future consequences do not work for them! The beauty is that this book makes you stop and think.

The book is fairly comprehensive in terms of its scope. We are currently using the book at our Organizational Behavior class, and it's proved to be an excellent reference. The way it is structured (for the reader) makes in-depth reading or skimming through it (let's face it: this is the reality for most working MBA students!) equally effective. It has clearly distinguishable definitions on the margins, which can serve as a cue for the topic, along with the summaries at the end of every chapter. The intro and closing "cases" provided around the topic of the chapter are VERY insightful and on every other page or so, there are examples about the matter being discussed, which help with the understanding (I know that I, as an Engineer, appreciate examples to illustrate a point). Finally, the illustrations (graphs and charts) are one of the best things the book has! Remember that phrase that used to say "a picture is worth a thousand words"? Well, the authors epithomize it. The charts in the book do a great job at conveying entire pages of information at a time in a very efficient way. All in all, I like the book a lot, and it's been very helpful in complementing our in-class discussions about cases and topics of Organizational Behavior.

I had to buy this book for a college management class. The material is painfully obvious. However, if you've lived you're entire life living in a dark, dank room eating Cheetos and watching MTV, then this book will be a watershed for you. If, on the otherhand, you are looking for some solid management theory, this book is not for you. If you have to buy this book for a course like I did, remember, you can always sell it to someone who hasn't read it yet.

During my MBA schooling time, i got introduced to MBTI, a personality test, and i am very much interested. But it is not "that easy" to teach and implement, people find it difficult to remember. Than a friend introduces the DISC concept to me. Upon browsing the amazon pages, i finally bought this book (and some others). And i found it pretty useful and serve my purpose as a simple behavior analysis tools for business success.
I have since used DISC approach to train people in Salesmanship and Managerial Leadership program. I found it very acceptable by laymen and they can benefit from the insight.
Popular applicable psychology is gaining more and more momentum and become more widely used in business. The root of this type of analysis started from the Greek 2000+ years ago with Sanguine, Choleric, Phhlegmatic and Melancholic.
The original form of this DISC apporoach comes from William Moulton Marston 1926 book Emotions of Normal People.
There are similar materials come in many form: COLOR CODE (HARTMAN), Personality Plus, and several other books.
This is not to replace all the more-in-depth psychology tools that profesional use, but this is a simple approach to see different type of people and how we can be more effective in fast forwarding ourselves. We can also see others and learn how to make them better in their works.
The book contains a simple test and the description of every type and the combination of types. It is very well written and accurate. Although i feel a bit "dry" on the style of writing, i am totally satisfied and find the book of a very high value.
This is not a dense reading, and you can jump forth and back and see your/other people's type of personality and use it to our advantages.
Anyone interested on how to "see" him/herself and the other and how to make best use of psychological approach toward different type of people will be able to benefit from this book.

Recognising what is toxic to you is perhaps a good starting point. Many of us spend more time with the people we work with than those we've chosen to spend our lives with. Most of us make assumptions that what offends or upsets us is the same for everyone else. This is not so.
In this book, Dr Lubit provides - with humour - descriptions of different types of managers and of different management techniques that can make working life hell.
Being aware of toxic behaviour and being able to manage its impact are two quite separate things. Dr Lubit provides insights into the former and resources to help individuals and groups deal with the latter.
I've had this book on my management bookshelf since it was published and find it an excellent resource both on a personal level and as part of mentoring other staff.

I wasn't sure I would like this book. The topic of workplace psychology can be done wrong in so many ways. You can present it too clinically and thus lack any practicality. And you can slide the other way and shower the user with pop psychology check-lists and acronyms.
This book walks the ideal path deftly and presents practical workplace issues with the right blend of psychology background and practical wisdom on how to handle individuals with personality issues.
The book is organized by disorder. Each type of personality is presented in it's own chapter with what to look for. As well as how to handle that individual as a boss, a coworker and as a subordinate.
A fascinating read on it's own, and practical advice for people stuck in tough jobs where they have to contend with coworkers who have personality problems.

Lubit's volume, "Coping with Toxic Managers and Subordinates," should be considered a standard reference for veteran and new professional staff, experienced and beginning managers, and leaders of all non-profit organizations, especially cultural ones. Colleagues have said that these conclusions apply to all organizations.

This book is an excellent handbook for managers who struggle with motivating 'challenging' people. It enables the reader to quickly identify types of toxic managers and provides guidance on effectively dealing with each type. This author offers clear, concise writing on a classic business problem: how to work with difficult people. Who doesn't work with at least 1 difficult person? What organization does not suffer productivity or financial loss from at least 1 toxic manager?
As I read the well-defined descriptions of Toxic Managers, I couldn't help but recall the many faces of those difficult people that have crossed my own work path over the past 24 years, and how I might have dealt with them differently under Roy Lubit's construct. Surely you'll experience similar learning and benefit, as you hear what the author has to say about how to deal with the difficult people that you encounter in your work life.
This book does a tremendous service by reminding us that work IS personal after all; that organizations are organic systems made up of human beings with personalities, traits, and problems that we cannot simply turn off or leave at home, like robots. Any organization, large or small, that wants to get serious about growth should read this book, breathe it and master it. The first step is to admit you have a problem. "Hello, my name is Bob. I'm a wasteaholic."; "Hi Bob".
I used to HATE process. HATE HATE HATE. I didn't want to be constrained; I rationalized saying "well it is a waste of time to invest time in process, it is just needless bureacracy". I was a creative person, still am. Then 10 years later I realized I was wasting a lot of time because things weren't organized, there wasn't accountability, the projects were driving me, instead of me being on top of things.
Are you a wasteaholic? Answer this question: Do you feel on top of things?

Book is dead on.
Several years ago I interviewed for a staff position at Cornell University, in a dept. run by a guy who had spent a number of years in industry; I wanted to impress him, so I asked, "are there any books you'd recommend, out of all you've come across, about project management and content?" And he said "Managing Documentation Projects" -- which is the precursor to this book.

In this book, JoAnn T. Hackos has compiled a great amount of useful information, "decorated" with many illustrating sample cases.
Well-structured, intelligible and applicable, "Information Development" is a welcome asset, although with 600 pages, it is nothing you read - least of all SHOULD read - overnight. :)

Please note that none of the reviews below are written about the 2006 new book on Information Development. The book is not a 2nd edition; it's an entirely new book with new content. The focus is on strategically managing a publications organization and effectively managing projects. The project management part of the book focuses on agile methods and managing topic-based writing activities.
Author has nothing to say and takes too long to say it.......2007-01-06
I bought this book because I liked the table of contents. I assumed this book would present concrete, actionable specifics on the subjects presented in the table of contents. I was disappointed.
Under information planning, this book only tells you that you should do it. Gee, thanks. Under estimating and scheduling - you should estimate future project resources and you should request new resources and fund innovation. Oh, boy. Yippee.
This book is an exercise in stating the blatantly obvious. I expected to see information on the nuts and bolts of producing technical documentation...I expected to see examples of budgets, examples of ways to create efficient systems for document production using single-sourcing, and to see examples of specific, important techniques for planning a document production process that allows for easy translation, revision, re-usability and transfer to different mediums. I expected to get a reference that would become well-worn on my desk. This book is as far from such a tome as it could possibly get while still being written in the English language.
I want to improve the efficiency of my documentation projects. I'd like to know about technologies (XML?, VBA?) that might help me with separating content from layout and improving reusability. Is that here? Nope. But you do get way too much talk about how you should acquire good tools that support your business goals. There is nothing about what those tools should be or what specifically would make them good.
One page tells you the difference between a "traditional" project and an "agile" project...things like: An agile project "responds to change" and has "minimal process documentation" as well as "reduced development schedules". That's nice. Who cares?
Implementing a Topic Architecture is the only section that even makes a move in the direction of specific, concrete, useful material. But even it leaves you thinking, "Well, duh...yathink?"
To sum up, this book tells you all the obvious things you ought to do...but that's it. It doesn't have anything to say about HOW you would actually do those things. I doubt the author has the foggiest idea how because I doubt she has a single hard skill to speak of. She definitely didn't write about any.

Without previewing this book, I ordered it as the primary textbook for a graduate level course I was teaching in International HR Management. The table of contents looked comprehensive and since it was written by a couple of Australians, I thought it had to be good. Not so. Although the field of international human resource management is interesting and exciting, this book was not. Excessively wordy and academic, it was excruciatingly boring to read. My students unanimously gave it a thumbs-down.

This book has been most insightful. I find that it re-inforced some of the tools I have already put in place as well gave me many more ideas. Managing Staff does not have to be ridget and cold, including them in dession making does not make you weak but strengthens your own work ethics.
Managaing with Carrots teaces you that your Staff are functionable by their own talents, and how to reconize them as well as acknowledge what they are concretly, to them, your staff, the pillers of your company.
I would like to also add that this book was very readable and short enough to keep you reading, long enough to inform you throughly.
A Fine Example of Self Promotion.......2001-11-12
Anyone with any business sense knows that recognition is important. Company owners and human resource professionals know that an entire industry has been built around this technique. There is an abundant supply of consultants, authors, and professional speakers touting the value of recognition, as well as companies that design recognition programs and sell the products that are used in recognition.
This book is unabashedly written by two senior executives from O. C. Tanner Recognition Company. The copyright is held by the company, rather than the authors. I approached this book with the expectation that it was designed to be a thinly-disguised promotion of O. C. Tanner's products and services. I wasn't disappointed. This perspective is not a bad thing, and a lot of valuable information is conveyed in the 111 pages.
I was a bit overpowered by the theme of the book: Managing with Carrots. The illustration on the front cover is a carrot trophy. Every page number is accompanied by a carrot-in orange print. All the call-out boxes and chapter subheads are printed in orange. Even the flyleaf of the book is orange. I'd have to label this overwhelming use of carrot orange as overkill. Even the start-of-chapter quote from Bugs Bunny was a bit too cute.
Part One is a chapter entitled "Carrot Seeds." Part Two gives us Carrot Planting, Carrot Cultivation; Presenting Carrots, Symbolic Carrots, Communicating about Carrots, and Creating a Carrot Culture. Part Three is Carrot Harvest and Part Four is Starting Your Own Carrot Crop. The flow is to present the recognition concept, explain how to build a recognition program, then how to reap the benefits. A number of case studies sprinkled through the book provide an illustrative enhancement.
If you accept the infomercial nature of this book, you can gain some helpful guidance.

Though this book may at first seem narrowly tailored for the business management market, I found it helpful as a middle school teacher in generating new ideas on how to extend and develop my own student recognition program. Using frequent examples, sidebars and graphic information, Gostick and Elton help identify what so many employees and students are hungry for in today's sometimes anonymous society, appreciation for one's efforts. Recommended for leaders of any organization.

Very disappointing........2005-05-18
I regularly read great articles from the subscription program of HBR and rely on its contents for great insight into today's business environment.
Unfortunately, the HBR book series make a poor comparison. I have even wonder if HBR is recycling unused, or rejected submissions for these books.
I bought Managing People, Brand managment and Marketing and stopped reading each after just two articles. They were just all a waste of time.
Readable papers on broad topics in management.......2004-07-26
Whether you're just entering people management or have been doing it for years, this book grabs a selection of readable papers on a variety of topics from compensation to handling 'poor performers' to more effective (but non-manipulative!) means of persuasion.
Especially interesting were the two articles on the performance of individuals and the messages -- both explicit and implicit -- that managers give to their reports and how they affect performance. You should definitely give them a read if you think you have an average to poor performer that you're actively working with right now.
HBR Managing People.......2000-04-05
Definitely one of the better books in the series. Discussion of common corporate issues. Provides good solutions. I've read 4 in the series and like this one the most.

Leman and Pentak succinctly present essential people-management principles, wrapped in a delightful story. In my opinion, The Way of the Shepherd captures the essence of Peter Drucker's best thoughts on human capital. I have provided copies for all the managers on my team, and frequently recommend this book to fellow business executives.

This book is an outstanding introduction to anyone already in, or entering into a leadership role. The format is so simple as you are reading a story line throughout, which keeps you captivated to completion. This book is based upon a person entering a leadership role for the first time and the great examples applied to their training allow everyone to relate at whatever level of leadership you are in. Each chapter provides a simple bulletized list indicating the key lessons learned.
After reading this I immediately went through and highlighted several points which I fequently review as a reminder to myself. I liked this book so much that not only do I recommend it to others, I have also bought several copies for my friends, co-workers and even my pastors at my church.
