Book Description

This career planning guide is written specifically for high-functioning adolescents and young adults on the autism spectrum, their families, teachers, and counselors. The two authors weave together a unique blend of information and advice based on personal experiences. Temple Grandin draws from her own experience with autism spectrum disorders and her professional career, and Kate Duffy uses her expertise on employment issues and the mother of two teenagers with autistic-like behaviors. The result is an extremely useful and practical book that introduces step-by-step processes for the job search with a major section on the impact ASD has in the workplace, including managing sensory problems, how to nurture and turn talents and special interests into paid work, jobs that are particularly suited to individuals on the spectrum, and much more. First-hand accounts of job experiences and advice from individuals representing a broad range of careers particularly suited for high-functioning individuals on the autism spectrum round off this exciting new resource.

5 out of 5 stars Developing Talents: Careers for Individuals with Asperger Syndrome and High-Functioning Autism.......2007-07-14

Fantastic book! Chock-full of practical ideas for coping in the real world, from someone on the autism spectrum who is highly successful in her life

2 out of 5 stars Limited information.......2007-05-23

By my having AS, along with ADHD, I was looking for a book that would give me some insight on the type of careers that people with AS may gravitate towards and how those with AS cope and succeed in an NT work environment.

For careers, not much insight as the gist was to try and make a career out of your special interest, which can vary among aspies. This is not necessarily a bad thing as it means that the career options are many for those of us with AS.

My second objective of learning how aspies can function effectively in the workplace was more disappointing. Most of the advice was things you could find in traditional career books. Not much on how to interview well, given our social challenges, or how to promote accomplishments because of the tendency to want to work alone. These are just two examples.

The book does a fair job of explaining AS and how it could present challenges in the workplace, but all in all, nothing insightful that can be used to find or succeed in a career.

3 out of 5 stars Autism Education.......2006-11-04

Most of this book offers parents assistance in educational needs of their lower functioning autisitc children. However, the list of possible job types is limited to manual laborer jobs. After having worked (and lived) with children in the autistic spectrum, I believe they are capable of much more than this book offers them. I would liketo see the authors add a list of secondary schools that offer admissins to children on the autistic spectrum along with assistance in the application process.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for teens, adults and parents!.......2006-08-10

Dr. Grandin has taken her knowledge, expertise and sensitivity one step further in Developing Talents: Careers for Individuals with Asperger Syndrome and High Functioning Autism. She offers many ideas for those affected by or those working with these individuals. This area is filled with people of talent who are underemployed. An example of one of the suggestions offered - an individual who is interested in cartoons and spends their days drawing - all day - being encouraged to go to a museum of cartooning, learning about different kinds of cartoons, the history of cartoons which expands their interest - meeting others with the same interest. It is not enough to have a talent or the intellectual ability to understand complex things. Without work, Dr. Grandin explains, her life would not have had order, content or meaning. She covers many different kinds of jobs that people on the autism spectrum can accommodate to and ones that would be more difficult for them. The book is well thought out and because Dr. Grandin is herself on the spectrum and spends so much of her time speaking to others at her many presentations she has analyzed a great deal of what works and what does not. This book is an absolute must read! I run a large group for parents, professionals and individuals and it is one of my first recommendations. This book gives concrete suggestions and hope.

4 out of 5 stars As a parent of an Asperger teen, this book was confirming and enlightening.......2006-02-23

As a parent of a teenager with Aspergers, alot of Ms. Gradin's recommendations confirmed what I already thought: sell the skills not the personality, go into areas where your interests/fixations lie and consider working as a consultant in your area of expertise. Finding recommendations I already thought of didn't make me feel like those parts of the book were a waste. On the contrary, it is nice to have affirmation from an outside source, particularly one intimately knowledgable of autism.

Other recommendations she makes were new to me. I had not thought of them, but they make alot of sense. She encourages people to go out and interview people in their field of choice to learn what they can about the industry. For neurotypical people, this would be akin to networking. For autistics, it is couched in a manner far easier for them to manage. People on the autism spectrum are probably not going to be good at social networking. But they would be very good at the interviews she recommends. She takes classic job networking and reworks it into research. I know my son LOVES researching more information on his interests, but digs in his heels at the thought of socializing.

Ms. Gradin also discusses the different styles of learning/thinking and which jobs are good for those type of people. My son happens to have amazing visual spatial abilities and is currently taking CAD in high school where he is getting straight A's. He now wants to become an architect which is exactly one of the fields Ms. Gradin reommends for visual spatial people on the spectrum.

Other beneficial feature of the book are the list of sources for information, examples of people in a wide selection of fields and Temple Gradin's personal observances.

I'm greatful to Ms. Gradin for writing books on autism. As hard as I try to understand my son, the fact that my brain is wired differently then his means I will always approach him with a bias, unintentional or otherwise. Her books clarify and explain things I could ponder for years and still not quite grasp.

I would also highly recommend her Animals In Translation book.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars It's Okay..........2007-08-23

I was really excited to get this book because I thought it was going to walk me through the steps of creating competencies and how to put them into place. The first chapter was great. After that it sort of drags a little. Each chapter is written by a different person or group of people so it is more like an accumulation of articles rather than something that is specifically useful. The information is still good and I am looking forward to finishing the book (almost done), but it definitely has not kept my interest. There are some spelling errors in the book as well, which tend to make it seem like it is not read enough to be considered a reliable resource. It is alright, but don't have the expectation that you will have enough information to implement these systems after reading the book.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Book.......2007-02-10

This is an outstanding book that succinctly explains a simple and practical approach to the identification, assessment and management of talent in the current, dynamic operating business environment. The book plainly gives advice on how to avoid high staff turnover, poor morale, and poor performance.

Here is a book that not only "tells it like it is," but offers visionary insights into "how it needs to be." The authors ignite the imagination, expand the possibilities, and offer practical strategies any firm can use to effectively develop, retain and utilise talent for the benefit of an organisation and enter the fluid, flexible future. Managers at all levels will cheer the sanity the authors suggest.

The book is written in an easy to follow and understand way that will help you draw career plans that enhance the morale of the workforce and generate and maintain high performance in your organization. It is full of straightforward, efficient, clear techniques for evaluating, planning, and developing top performing employees to ensure that your organization will be a success.

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional Talent Management Resource.......2006-02-23

This handbook offers valuable and process rich descriptions of how to create a talent management system and how to develop competencies to work within that system for consultants and executives alike. The handbook also provides practical suggestions on creating performance management systems along with several other support tools common to talent management systems including compensation, 360 feedback, training and coaching.

3 out of 5 stars Good reference material.......2005-08-20

A few of the articles are stellar, but many are so-so. Nevertheless, it is very comprehensive covering topics from A to Z, so it is a good reference tool. Definitely for the HR professional, not the line manager.

5 out of 5 stars AN EXCELLENT COLLECTION OF INSIGHTFUL CONTRIBUTIONS........2005-05-20

The concept of talent management is a systematic, proactive approach to the integration of business and organizational planning, assessment, succession planning, performance improvement, competency enhancement, and career growth. Contributors explain: how a talent management plan and process are developed; the four steps to creating a system; how competencies create economic value; finding high-potential talent throughout the organization; and much more. Breaks important, new ground.

Book Description

During the last decade, we have moved, perhaps irrevocably, into the era of a global economy. Through its focus on human resource management and organization, The Global Challenge: Frameworks for International Human Resource Management, provides a broad guide on how to manage the process of internationalization, with a particular focus on the transnational firm. In this brand new offering, authors Evans, Pucik and Barsoux discuss the “people implications” of traditional strategies for internationalization and how such strategies get executed through human resource management (HRM). They discuss such important topics as: · how to manage expatriates from the parent country · how to go about adapting management practices to circumstances abroad · how to localize management · how to recognize and ultimately avoid obstacles in joint ventures · how to expand across borders through acquisitions · how to respond to the contradictory pressures of the transnational firm, where HRM has a critical role to play in enabling managers to resolve these paradoxes in innovative ways · how global competition is changing the nature of management and organization, even for firms operating in domestic markets. The book draws on practical examples from companies that have experienced the real challenges of international HRM. The authors carefully balance these real business applications with a wide scope of academic research.

2 out of 5 stars Overview on Intern. HRM but way too wordy.......2005-04-26

This book is a tour de force in international HRM and is therefore good for those who want an overview on the various problems modern HR managers face. But you have to dig deep to find concise descriptions of tools or any other recipes for how to deal with them. From the start until the end, I found the approach taken by the authors rather disappointing. It comes along like a textbook but doesn't reach the formal standard of a textbook. It seems rather casually written like a book for practitioners, but it is too wordy and not applied enough. The ideal target group seems more retired managers, who have time to read through the chapters. Yes, globalisation is a challenge especially in human resource management. But most of the readers are actually looking for more answers than this book offers. The book is full of "challenges" "the answer depends on what strategy a firm follows" without further elaborating.
On the other side, the authors seem to be very experienced and they know the litrature. They do not try to give easy answers to complex questions, which is good. Yet, they have not succeeded in writing an inspiring book that is rewarding to read. It leaves the reader behind puzzeled about what to do as a HR manager.
The book is not really an introduction into the main concepts of international HR, which renders it less useful for class. The authors often refer to specific companies and cases without explaining them in detail (e.g. "...a relationship such as between Nokia and TI"). Starting with one detailed case per chapter would have helped me (and students) grasping the main messages. For class, I would rather recommend Nancy Adler's "international dimension of organisational behaviour" and additional books about specific topics such as M&A, alliances etc, which this book covers as well. Though, I have not read the additional material supplied to lecturers for this book.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A solid coaching resource........2003-11-08

The Coaching Manager is not only an excellent reference for managers and supervisors, it also provides a clear look at the issues within an organization for the increasing number of personal coaches who are working with these professionals. Personal coaches who have any number of clients within organizations will see a lot of the people they work with in the pages of this book. Most trained coaches know that the key to great coaching is being "client-centered" as opposed to "coach-centered" or "boss-centered." The authors provide a simple model that follows this principle. The model might be a tough paradigm shift for many managers who are used to years of practicing the "tell-them-what-to-do" bossing approach. One important thing the authors mention is to be aware of the fact that managers may not get a lot of support within an organization to practice the client-centered approach. But if managers have the courage to work on it, their staff will be loyal, and bottom-line results will surely come.

3 out of 5 stars Too academic for my liking.......2003-10-15

I am a manager of a team of 8 and I am looking to build my coaching skills. To that end given the fact that my company spends very little on management devlopment, I have to read as much as a can. I have bought several books on coaching and have found them either too academic or too life coach orientated with little emphasis on coaching within a business and management context.

The Coaching Manager is certainly business orientated and has some useful examples to highlight the points emphasised although I did get the flavour of "academia" as opposed to real "business experience" coming through. I found it too lengthy in places and some chapters I will have to read again in order to fully grasp the learning from them.

Having said that it will remain on my shelf (along with the others) and I will probably use it occasionally. I am busy manager and would prefer something a bit shorter and more practical.

5 out of 5 stars A Great System.......2003-07-15

The Coaching Manager: Developing Top Talent in Business is easy to read and has an easy-to-implement coaching method. It teaches managers to help even excellent employees learn and grow, while developing a supportive relationship between manager and employee. Translation from book to practice is easy and immediate. It also shows how to separate observations from hunches. What a great system!

4 out of 5 stars Immediately Useful.......2002-10-25

I read the last half of this book flying from Boston to Phoenix to coach one of my team members in a presentation. I was able to use the framework in this book immediately.

As a result of reading the book, I told my employee that I would be using a new system for coaching and I asked my employee what he wanted to work on and what I should watch for. This gave me a framework for my observations.

I also used the system they recommended to separate what I saw from my inferences.

The resulting discussion was useful for both of us. I was able to say things like "I saw that the audience was leaning forward and nodding. I took that to mean they were attentive. There was one woman who was leaning back and sort of looking around. I took that to mean she was bored." then the employee said that she had seen the presentation before.

I asked for his feedback at the end about my new coaching approach and he was very enthusiastic!

Excellent system!

5 out of 5 stars A Book on Managerial Coaching That's Worth Buying.......2002-06-10

I have read or seen most of the books written on coaching employees over the last 10 years. This book presents a practical and interesting approach to the caoching and development of your top performers, a group that usually gets ignored. Most books in this area focus on coaching the difficult or problem employees while in this book there is a definite focus on developing the best.
The Coaching manager is very readable and uses good examples and short cases to make the key points. The authors seem well-versed in business which I found refreshing after reading too many coaching books from former or current sports coaches who may have had one or two winning seasons before fading into oblivion.
I plan on using this book in our company's executive development programs. This book has great value for any manager.

5 out of 5 stars Best book on the subject!.......2007-06-27

As a homeschool parent responsible for the education of my child, I skimmed the first six chapters--interesting with unstated implications for other subjects. The next two chapters are invaluable. You and your child's math teacher should know the contents well, even if your child is just performing at grade level. I like to hike the mountains with a guide who has been to the summit, even if I think at first that I am not going to the top. The hike will be more exciting even lower down on the mountain. I will probably explore more exotic areas and even yearn to ascend the heights, when I never would have considered it without that guide. This book expands horizons, for the authors have mounted the math summit many times and teach teachers to lead their students there.

5 out of 5 stars A must for every parent of a gifted math student.......2006-12-11

This is by far the best book I have read on the subject of giftedness in math. This goes through the myths of teaching math to gifted. It will hit home- as these myths are WIDELY believed by the schools in the USA. There is a plethora of very practical advice for parents. Many talented youth are underachieving in math in the USA because of they way the schools go about teaching. This book goes through how to work with the schools step by step. It is indispensible for parents of a traditionally schooled child- for homeschoolers still helpful- but maybe not as much as in the traditional schools.

    Book Description

Many organizations today are scrambling to prepare for an expected wave of retirements. Almost twice as many job openings are occurring from people retiring than from economic expansion--a direct function of a steadily aging workforce. The implications for businesses, government agencies, nonprofits, and educational institutions are enormous, as organizational leaders maneuver to fill the talent pipeline. In this context, organizations are stepping up their investments in career planning (training and development programs to help employees hone their skills and qualify for advancement) and succession management (programs designed to ensure the continuity of leadership). To date, these programs have generally been treated in isolation, and the combined effects of attracting, developing, and grooming talent from the bottom up and the top down are being lost. Drawing from the authors' decades of research and practical experience, a survey of 1,000 human resource practitioners, and examples from a wide variety of organizations, Career Planning and Succession Management shows readers how to create that crucial link between succession and career development programs. Showcasing the most current theory and practice, the book address such hot-button issues as: how to prevent top performers from leaving, how to balance the competing needs of promoting from within versus bringing in new blood, and dealing with unexpected "retirements" in an age of corporate scandal. Featuring numerous diagnostics, checklists, and other interactive elements, Career Planning and Succession Management will become an indispensable guide for leaders and human resource professionals looking to align individual and organizational goals and ensure their economic future.

    Book Description

Leadership development is one of the most critical needs of any organization. With Baby Boomers starting to retire, where will new leaders come from? How does a company make sure it has the "bench strength" to have the right leaders at the right time? This book offers a powerful and original approach to the challenge, covering strategic factors often overlooked in other books. These include how to:

    * choose between growing talent from within and hiring outside people * create and execute talent strategies to maximize organizational effectiveness * hire a Chief Talent Officer, a position increasingly found at forward-looking companies * use "war-game" scenarios to test strategies and correct bad decisions quickly

Bench Strength offers specific, step-by-step guidelines for developing every aspect of a winning strategy. Most important, it provides the action steps for making smart, realistic choices, and putting a talented and versatile team together--for today and for the future.

"This book provides all the right stuff if you're ready to get down to the hard work of strategic talent management. Take advantage of well thought out questions, challenges, and guidelines for designing and executing with confidence. Barner does a superb job." -- Janet S. Steinwedel, Ph.D., Director Leadership Coaching, AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals

"Follow this comprehensive, practical roadmap--complete with toolkit--to the land of an energized and high performance work environment." -- M. Cass Wheeler, CEO, American Heart Association

"This book serves as an insightful guide for both executives and development professionals. By presenting a balanced perspective of the different strategic approaches, it provides a thoughtful analysis of the options (and trade-offs) associated with implementing various leadership development initiatives. Organizations interested in attaining a competitive advantage through people (specifically a strong leadership team) will learn about the subtlety and creativity needed to do it right (one size does not fit all)." -- Christina D. Williams, Ph.D., Managing Director, RHR International

"P & L owners and HR practitioners alike will find this book easy to use and highly applicable to their joint cause of winning the sustained talent war. Barner's blend of cases, theory, models, and questions of self-discovery is a perfect balance." -- Samir Gupte, Vice President, Human Resources, Bahama Breeze

"Bob Barner presents a highly cogent and comprehensive guidebook for HR professionals, managers, and CEO's for building an effective talent strategy. Focusing on key talent decisions - 'Make versus Buy'/'Capstone versus Foundation'/'Build Out versus Trade-up' - this book brings clarity to the most vexing and perennial HR challenges, helping managers not only to understand the options they have but how to think through these choices and specifically when and how to respond. Distinctive throughout is the book's unwavering focus on business impact and alignment with business strategy." -- Jean Martin-Weinstein, Managing Director, Corporate Leadership Council

"Bench Strength is the only book on talent management I have read that is practical and actionable. Barner not only outlines a well-defined path for success, but also provides examples and experiences that bring the words and recommended actions to life. This book will be of immense value to any organization seeking to develop a talent management strategy that is aligned with and supports the business direction." -- Tracy South, Senior Vice President, Human Resources, Mosaic Sales Solutions

5 out of 5 stars Insightful and Comprehensive.......2006-07-02

Bench Strength is one of the most accessible books I've found on leadership and executive talent. I particularly find the graphics and summary charts appealing; I wish all authors would consider readers as much when dealing with the complexities of today's business challenges.

Anyone who yearns for a master plan on how to integrate talent strategy with business strategy in order to take his/her organization to the next level must get this book. Reading each chapter is akin to having a one-on-one coaching session with a 20-year veteran in organizational and management development (the author, Robert Barner).

Bench Strength has earned a prominent place on my bookshelf and is one of my favorite resources.

4 out of 5 stars Developing Talent in Young People.......2000-03-28

Bloom's study helps those seriously interested in understanding the differences between different kinds of talent and it can be nurtured. The study describes how the nurturance of gifted athletes and musicians takes a different path than that of intellectually gifted young people. It points out that the families do not choose between the intellectual and athletic areas but follow the talents manifested by their children.

Apparently world-class talent becomes evident in the early years of performance and spurs on the efforts of family and youngster. In the cases of musical and physical talent, in this study it is concert pianists and Olympic swimmers, children show an intitial interest for practice and competition but go through a period of resistance before they make the talent area truly their own. Such youngsters do not succeed without the time and financial support of their families. Much, including regular schooling, needs to be sacrificed. The study concludes that eminent sculptors have a much less clearly defined or supported pathways to prominance.

Although the nurturance and support systems are similar for world-class athletes and musicians, the actual family environments differ considerably. The musicians experience a family environment more like that of the mathematicians and scientists in their youth.

Intellectual talent like that found in expert mathematicians and scientists also requires facilitation by the family. A particular point of interest is the generally overall high intelligence of these young people, and an unusually high degree of family cohesiveness. Few eminent mathematicians or scientists come from families of divorce.

Finally, the types of personalities vary by talent area and the book gives excellent case study examples.

I would give the book 5 stars if it gave more specific information on intellectual make-up of the study subjects or the groups under study.

    Book Description

A practical step-by-step approach to hiring the right person.

Every hiring manager knows that the traditional hiring and interviewing process is a poor tool for predicting organizational fit and future on-the-job success. Behavioral interviewing can improve your chances of picking the right candidate two to five times over traditional processes. It focuses on how the candidate works rather than on skills, qualifications, and impressions.

The Talent Edge shows how you can develop a concrete understanding of what your own top performers do differently than the majority of their peers, and how to translate that knowledge into a better hiring system. While using case studies from organizations that have successfully transformed their hiring practices, the book articulates the business case for a Behavioral Interviewing system, and provides a roadmap for implementing it.

Comprehensive coverage includes: how to write job profiles and translate them into questions and answers that can be used in the interview; how to prepare for the interview, ask questions, and probe for the right information. The book also offers advice on how behaviors that are defined and proven to be useful in the hiring process can be incorporated into performance management, career development, and succession planning.

Ensuring that you've got the right candidate for any position is an art. Mr. Cohen does a fantastic job of educating us to the nuances of this art and if you're in the biz, you should read it. My only gripe - too pricey.
