Business Essentials.......2007-04-03
This book came faster and in way better condition than I thought it would. Was very pleased with the item.
A Good text book.......2007-02-10
This book gives a good introduction to a person new to the business field. It has a good ammount of definitions and of business terms and passes the necessary information in a well organized way.
good text FOR SALE!.......2006-06-20
i have one for sale, brand new for $35!email heather_ellis84@yahoo.com if interested.
More of a reference book........2006-02-26
This book does not have a lot of depth to it - and it is somewhat dated (each year a bit more), but there are some handy examples that make it a worthwhile read... especially for the price.
An O-K text, with a few gems........2004-12-16
For your basic introductory business class, this book is good. It offers a lot of vocabulary, and I can see why a lot of people would say the book has no depth since most of the information can be drawn from simply living the real world. (Unless of course you live in a refrigerator.) So why bother grabbing the text if I can get the same exact knowledge from life?
Well, in the beginning, end and throughout each chapter, tons of real life examples are woven in to illustrate each of the "business essentials." On top of that, real quotes from millionares, successful CEOs and entrepreneurs, and trusted business executives allows the average student a valuable glance into what makes up a smart business mindset.
What's my point? To study business, you need to study the principles that real professionals swear by. Texts written by "just" business professors who don't actually participate in the business world really just don't cut the chase. They're probably broke anyway. Now textbooks with information from successful people, that's what's going to make a student of business really churn out a beautiful future.
So while the material is very, very basic. The real life examples are awesome. However, these lessons can be taught by even better books by great people like Stephen R. Covey and Dale Carnegie. But if you do need a book chock full o' business vocabulary and basics, this isn't a terrible pick. And it certainly does spell everything out.

If most coaching guides look as if you'd need a coach just to get through them, you'll love this itty-bitty guide, which zooms in on the most important aspects of organizational-workplace coaching, from selecting an effective personal coaching style and preparing and shaping a coaching session to followup steps, dealing with barriers to coaching, troubleshooting, and more advanced coaching, such as team coaching, long-distance coaching, coaching plus appraising, and assessing your own coaching skills. On every page, boxed "power tips," quickie case studies and self-tests, to-do checklists, and easy-to-follow flowcharts demystify the process. Granted, if you're looking for specific or in-depth guidance, you may find this book too general in its approach. But if you're looking for a thumbnail guide to the basics, it'll do just fine.
It's worth mentioning that the book is also part of reference publisher Dorling-Kindersley's Essential Managers series--20 itty-bitty books on business and career topics ranging from communication, leadership, and decision-making to the management of time, budgets, change, meetings, people, projects, and teams. Combining the For Dummies series' talent for breaking down a lot of information into bite-sized bits and sidebars with Dorling-Kindersley's signature, crisp graphics on a gleaming white backdrop, they don't represent the cutting edge of business thinking and they don't necessarily reflect any unique individual perspective.
Instead, it's as though someone collated the best general thinking on these 20 topics and rolled them out into 72 brightly designed and easy-to-read pages, studded along the way with boxed tips, color shots of a multiracial cast of "coworkers" animatedly hashing through the workplace issues of the day, and a self-test of one's skills in the topic at hand on the last few pages of each volume. Again, they're not for anyone looking for in-depth or focused help on any of the subjects they cover, but they're perfect as a quickie general-interest reference... and let's face it, they're so cute, and look so smart in a neat little stack or row, that you'll probably want to buy a whole bunch to give to your entire department or staff. --Timothy Murphy

Power Tips from two experts in the field..........2001-05-08
John Eaton holds a doctorate in psychology and is a senior partner of Coaching solutions. They provide coaching and cultural change programs for managers and directors. Roy Johnson has extensive senior management experience and runs Pace, an award-winning training company. Together they also have written Business Applications of NLP.
If you want to learn all you need to know about helping people to achieve their full potential, then you will enjoy Coaching Successfully. This book will show you how to motivate others, promote initiative and help others to take responsibility.
Your coaching style will need to be adapted when dealing with a group and you will also enjoy reading about how to overcome negativity. There are power tips throughout the book which help you to handle real-life situations and increase your effectiveness.
In today's business environment, e-mail can also be used for coaching, however they advise you not to use it for "personal" coaching. At the end of the book, you can evaluate your own coaching skills.
"Raise your expectations and ask people to live up to them." -pg. 62 "Allow people to learn from their own mistakes." -pg. 63 "Motivate staff by linking their personal goals to the company's aims." -pg. 20
These power tips are very useful and there are so many great ideas contained in this mini book. It won't take a long time to read, but you will be able to be a more positive influence on others and will know how to bring out the best in those you work with.

Customer Reviews:
HPI essentials review.......2007-05-13
The text is good as an overview, and provides specifics regarding HPI, but it does not go enough in depth. It is a good resource for bullet points of things that should be done and why.
Great overview of HPI.......2005-10-24
This is a great asset to my collection of HPI books. This one gives a great overview of the process and some simple illustrations on how to implement. Very simple to read and understand. Great book to simplify the whole HPI process!
Indispensable introduction to HPI.......2004-05-29
George Piskurich has done an excellent job of collecting some of the best names in the industry to introduce the various concepts associated with Human Performance Improvement (or Technology). As the sub-title suggests; this is a "bottom-line primer on HPI" and therefore, it focuses on real-life application. At the same time, the theoretical concepts are explained in a straight-forward manner with just the right amount of detail to guide the reader through the application bits.
At the end of each Chapter, you will find additional resources and references should you want to explore that particular topic in more detail as well as an extremely helpful "HPI Challenge" section that guides through applying and using the concepts explored in that chapter.
The Chapters closely follow the HPI model itself and are divided into:
1: What is HPI? A brief and very useful introduction to HPI and the HPI Model.
2: Business analysis - The first step in any HPI Process and vital for the final evaluation stage.
3: Performance analysis - How to link business goals to performance goals
4: Gap analysis - Evaluating the difference between the desired and actual performance levels.
5: Cause analysis - Why do performance gaps exist? This chapter emphasizes the need to address root causes and not symptoms.
6: Selecting an HPI project - Now that you understand the basics, select your first HPI project.
7: Motivational interventions. This chapter is written by Sivasailam Thiagarajan "Thiagi" and is an excellent primer on implementing solutions to address motivational issues in an organization.
8: Designing & developing structure/process interventions - Divided into organizational and systems aspects this is one of the best introductions to process interventions I've come across.
9: Knowledge interventions - This chapter has a multitude of practical guidelines and suggestions for optimizing training and focuses on the fact that training is not always the answer.
10: Stakeholder involvement - Guidelines for identifying stakeholders and ensuring their involvement and buy-in.
11: Evaluation - Using the Results-based approach of HPI, this chapter guides you through the steps needed to demonstrate the value-added to the organziation through the HPI project.
12: Performance Consultant - the job - Dana Gaines explains in a straightforward manner exactly what does an HPI Consultant do and helps the reader create a personal development plan for HPI consulting competencies.

Customer Reviews:
For novices.......2007-09-28
I looked forward with anticipation to gathering some great tips to add to my training repetoire. Unfortunately, I found the book to be incredibly repetitious and elementary. How many different ways can one put ideas on a sticky note and share with the person beside them? A disappointment.
Fun, effective and complete!.......2007-08-18
The first time I used the ideas presented in Sharon's book in a training, I received fantastic feedback!
The active learning strategies are quick, fun, and surprisingly effective.
As both a trainer and a high school teacher, I particularly appreciate the holistic "Learning Compass" idea which ensures the audience will connect to, remember, and use the new material.
The Ten-Minute Trainer is a complete, consistent, and clear handbook that will guide a presenter or teacher into providing rich, effective, and meaningful trainings.
Good material.......2007-07-14
Bowman's book is a good resource for teachers and presenters alike. Some of the material is highly usable for teachers but some is less so. I did like the fact that the book explains that it was meant to be used as each person needs it. If you are a developed and experienced presenter/ teacher, it encourages you to skip the introductory stuff and move on to the more advanced material. For that alone, the author gained a great deal of credibility from me from the first time I opened the book.
The Ten-Minute Trainer.......2007-07-12
I'm always looking for good tips to include in my "Train the Trainer" classes. This book was a complete waste of my money. I would not recommend to anyone - even a complete novice
Great ways to increase participation and interest in any class.......2007-07-06
I am writing this message for my Husband, D. Bowman. "I am a community college instructor of over 20 years for Business and Accounting.....I was greatly impressed how applying some of these very simple ideas made some less appealing subject matters interesting, greatly increased class participation, and as an accountant would say, improved the bottom line meaning student grades went up.
If I can use it effectively.....any one can".
Thanks for your time.

Customer Reviews:
Cash for Rehash.......2007-06-29
Most of this is the same material provided by Coach U in the early days as part of their tuition costs.
Good, not great.......2007-03-25
There are some great forms tucked inside this book, but it is buried in a lot of "fluff" that doesn't lend itself to a form layout.
Not what I expected.......2006-07-28
This book is almost identical to "The Coaching Starter Kit. It is mostly forms to be used in coaching. The good thing about this book is that all the forms are on a CD.
THIS IS A HUGE WASTE OF MONEY.......2006-04-21
I don't normally do reviews on items because I am aa easily pleased person. But, I had to do this so that other people don't make the same mistake I did. This book is awful. The disk has tons of forms ALL of which are either bogus writing which is hard to undersatnd OR are TOTALLU useless. Plus, they are done SO POORLY that a high school student could create a better document.
The book is nothing but forms and fruity language. It really gives a BAD name to the coaching profession. I think it is a noble life path and I happent o be on it. After reading this I am afraid to think that some coaches use this as a guideline for their work. If my coach spoke this way to me I would be offended and feel like I was being used for money.
I HOPE THAT NOBDY WHO SERIOUSLY CONSIDERS BECOMING A COACH USES THIS AS ANY SORT OF A GUIDE!
A "Must Have" Resource For Personal & Executive Coaches!.......2005-09-17
I am currently attending classes to become a certified "life coach", and have been searching for a book that would provide me with additional resources that I could use during my coaching sessions with clients.
Although I wasn't quite sure what to expect when I ordered "Coach U's Essential Coaching Tools", I must say that it has exceeded my expectations! This book is literally jam packed with great assessment tools, checklists, forms & ideas - perfect for both the new & seasoned coach. Plus, it includes a CD-ROM so that all of the information can easily be downloaded onto your computer, and printed out as needed.
Overall, I would highly recommend this resource to anyone in the coaching business!

Customer Reviews:
Great resource for Instructional designers.......2007-08-23
An an instructional designer, I know how difficult it can be to find good written resources on the subject, and it is next to impossible to find resources that don't waste too much time on ID history and theory.
I wanted a practical resource, and that is exactly what this book is. It explains ID procedure in great detail and stays away from uneccessary theoretical mumbo jumbo. My only criticism is that it can get wordy and repetitive at times.
This is not a book for ID students, it's a book for actual instructional designers. I learned more from this book than any other book on ID.
Very down to earth..........2007-07-06
I bough this text for a graduate course that I am taking. I really like how the author is down to earth and speaks on an understandable level. He also explains items very clearly.
Everything you need to develop instructional material.......2007-03-16
This book has more than some instructors will need, but I think all of it has potential for being very useful. For example, I am using part of it to help me improve the layout of a book, another part to help me teach trainers how to write better instructional objectives, and the rest to refresh my learning in every area.
There is still the matter of teaching in an effective way, and this book was not developed for that purpose. But having a well organized block of instruction in which each part has a purpose, and having good printed material and plenty of participant interaction, will make teaching easier. This book provides all of that in abundance. I believe it should be a standard reference for committed trainers.
Don't do it like this.......2005-10-08
For an instructional designer the author spent a lot of time going over what not to do versus what to do. I found his condescending attitude put me off. The info however is helpful, but I'm sure there is another book that can more effectively convey the information.
Comprehensive and applicable.......2005-09-30
This book has been a wonderful addition to my library. I am using it to train a couple of non-instructional designers on how to design and develop quality training. It has provided an easy to read comprehensive guide. The icons throughout the book guide those that are infrequent designers in the most applicable sections of the book vs. those that a professional ID person would need to know. I highly recommend this book.

Internal marketing with an HR twist.......2006-08-08
This predictable book on branding has a slight twist: aim your branding efforts at your employees as well as at your customers. Simple enough. Authors Libby Sartain and Mark Schumann have boiled employer branding down to eight essentials. Generally, they focus on their core concept with a positive orientation toward employees, although their lists, checklists and lists within lists do get repetitive. Maybe all those lists are intended to help the staff in human resources, where they place much of the responsibility for internal branding. We recommend this book to branding and internal marketing newcomers who want a rundown of the basics, and to human resource professionals who may need to learn about marketing to harness the impact of internal branding.

Great work! So simple..........2007-04-04
Having attended a book review with Dr.'s Sleezer and Russ-Eft in Indianapolis recently, I was intrigued with the book and thought I would give it a go.
This work is very well-organized! My favorite part is that the authors make it easy to use the book as a reference to the Needs Assessment process by providing an index of what you're looking for and where to find it. Additionally, a CD is provided with a host of needs assessment tools that, so far, appear very useful!
Needs Assessments.......2007-02-11
I rely on this resource a lot to get started on organizational needs assessment. No information about cost/benefit analysis, etc. but lots of other great information!
This book will be well worth your time.......2005-09-20
I am a technical trainer of 10 years, and manage a group of four.
This is a great book for anyone looking for best practice approaches to a variety of needs assessment situations. Gupta's chapters are organized by the common type(s) of needs assessments, and each chapter breaks down the component steps that need to be taken to complete the assessment.
I think one of the real gems of the book is that she provides lots of examples of needs assessment interview questions, surveys, training plans, etc. on a floppy disk attached to the back of the book, which you can save to computer and work from to build your own stuff. It saved me some design time, and gave my assessment a "kick start" in the right direction.
Not only practical, but useful, too!.......2004-05-04
Kavita Gupta wrote a book that is a must-have for anyone desiring an overview of the multiple ways needs assessment can occur. Gupta begins by setting the context of needs assessment, attending first to what needs assessment is and where it fits into the training or performance improvement scheme. By overviewing the works of Gilbert, Kaufman, Rossett, and others, the author creates a very usable comparison. Persons trying to decide what type of needs assessments are best for their situation can quickly narrow their focuses. (Not all needs analyses are built alike, after all, and they start from somewhat different places.) A review of data gathering fundamentals is concise (just over 20 pages) but helpful.
In "Part II, Getting Down to Brass Tacks" Gupta examines and provides very helpful models for conducting four types of needs analyses: Strategic Needs Assessment, Competency-Based Assessment, Job and Task Analysis, and Training Needs Assessment.
The Toolkit in Part III is invaluable--samples of 21 different forms. By itself, this section makes the book worth every penny. The diskette provided, though, provides each of these forms in MSWord--ready to be opened, customized, and used in real applications.
There is great value in this book--enough description of the models that one can begin using them, references to dig deeper into the models if desired, and charts, tables, and job aids that allow anyone to get started quickly on effective needs analysis.
