Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2005-09-11

I really liked this book as it is very easy to read and understand. I found it to be very informative, educational, and a must read for anyone working within the human services field.

5 out of 5 stars Great Sourcebook for Teachers.......2001-07-15

This particular item is an excellent overview of case management practice for beginning and experienced case managers alike. Every aspect of case management practice from definitions to professional boundary issues and ethics to listening skills is covered. While this volume handles each topic in depth, the writing is straight-forward and no-nonsense. This combination makes the information necessary for a thourough discussion on the topic very accessible even to the novice. Chapter 1 entitled "Ethics and Other Professional Responsibilitities for Human Services Workers" provides a strong base for the subsequent discussions which follow. Chapters 6 and &7, "Seeing Yourself as a Separate Person" and "Clarifying Who Owns the Problem", flush out issues which need to be addressed in today's expanding market of paraprofessional services.

This book is a good resource for the shelves of those already working as case managers and a great text for students preparing themselves for work in the field of human services.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Practical & Thorough.......2006-11-10

As a graduate student in a group dynamics class I found this book very practical and thorough. I like Yalom's interpersonal approach a lot too but I find that this book covers the nuts and bolts of groups really well.

2 out of 5 stars SLOW DELIVERY.......2005-09-24

I promptly emailed the company and told them that I ordered the wrong book. I asked them if there was any way for them to stop my order. They never replied and it still too 2 weeks for me to recieve my book. When I received my book there was not receipt or return address.

5 out of 5 stars Counseling groups? You probably need this!.......2005-08-08

Written in Jacobs's usual concise, never boring, and yet easy to read style, this informative text concerning group counseling provides all of the information a qualified counselor needs to plan, develop, and facilitate groups effectively. Jacobs's introduces group concepts within the integrative framework of Impact Therapy, a dynamic approach to counseling, incorporating theory and creative techniques, that he developed. His style, while not for everyone, provides the tools that a courageous counselor well-versed in theory can use to facilitate client movement.

I have studied with Dr. Jacobs, and so quickly realized these are the very same techniques he uses to run his Theories and Techniques classes. I know they work because there is never a moment in class that feels wasted, and it is never boring. My experience has been that class is generally over long before you want it to be.

Recently, I was developing a group proposal as a requirement of a group counseling class I took this summer. I had read the Corey book on groups, had the benefit of a semester's worth of lectures, had been through 40 or 50 additional publications/articles. I had all of this information and I had an idea, and yet I was struggling on exactly how to go about putting this proposal together. I had recently received the Jacobs book, but only had time to read the first couple of chapters, so I picked it up, flipped to the chapter on planning groups, and withing 20 pages my pen was flying as I scribbled notes organizing my project. Two chapters later, all I had left to do was type the formal proposal.

The book is filled with practical ideas presented in an uncomplicated manner that allows for immediate practical application. I highly recommend it!

Book Description

The brain is a fearsomely complex information-processing environment--one that often eludes our ability to understand it. At any given time, the brain is collecting, filtering, and analyzing information and, in response, performing countless intricate processes, some of which are automatic, some voluntary, some conscious, and some unconscious. Cognitive neuroscience is one of the ways we have to understand the workings of our minds. It's the study of the brain biology behind our mental functions: a collection of methods--like brain scanning and computational modeling--combined with a way of looking at psychological phenomena and discovering where, why, and how the brain makes them happen. Want to know more? Mind Hacks is a collection of probes into the moment-by-moment works of the brain. Using cognitive neuroscience, these experiments, tricks, and tips related to vision, motor skills, attention, cognition, subliminal perception, and more throw light on how the human brain works. Each hack examines specific operations of the brain. By seeing how the brain responds, we pick up clues about the architecture and design of the brain, learning a little bit more about how the brain is put together. Mind Hacks begins your exploration of the mind with a look inside the brain itself, using hacks such as "Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation: Turn On and Off Bits of the Brain" and "Tour the Cortex and the Four Lobes." Also among the 100 hacks in this book, you'll find: Steven Johnson, author of "Mind Wide Open" writes in his foreword to the book, "These hacks amaze because they reveal the brain's hidden logic; they shed light on the cheats and shortcuts and latent assumptions our brains make about the world." If you want to know more about what's going on in your head, then Mind Hacks is the key--let yourself play with the interface between you and the world.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Interesting but disappointed.......2007-07-02

Learning about the mind is okay, but I didn't learn anything that I hadn't seen in Psych 101, and a few interesting articles later on.

Calling it a "hacks" book is false advertising, at best. Should it make it to another printing, I would hope O'Reilly would rename it.

The information seemed accurate, so I'll give it that.

5 out of 5 stars Mind hacks.......2007-02-13

This is a really great book. More novelty than improvement, but still great. If you're looking for something that will be useful as well as attention grabbing then look for the second edition; "Mind Performance Hacks"

1 out of 5 stars Not really a "hacks" book.......2006-11-02

I was sorely disappointed in this book--I checked it out from the local library and hoped that it would actually live up to the subtitle of including tips and tools for using my brain. It didn't; the few "tips" included were those that are found in virtually every other discussion of how to improve memory.

This book is more geared toward folks who are designing user interfaces--it talks about how the brain processes information (and thus describes ways to improve information conveyance).

4 out of 5 stars Mind Hacks: Tips & Tools for Using Your Brain.......2006-07-25

It's a book very interested about language in mind and speech comprehension. I read a short comment in BBC Focus magazine and I wish to read because it's very easy to learn the misteries of mind in cognitive science applied to language and psichology.

4 out of 5 stars A fun book.......2006-04-30

It is not a typical "hacks" book in that it does not tell you how to utilize you brain more effectively or do neat things. It *does* have a lot of exercises that show you cool things on how your brain works with sections describing how your brain works - and a number of experiments (blind spot, Magnet interaction with the brain, word parsing in the the mind, and so on). This book goes very well with a recent title called _Mind Wide Open_ by Steven Johnson.

If you want traditional "hacks" the book "Mind Performance Hacks" just came out, and is chock full of those sorts of experiments, while less informative, does do things like memory tricks, meath calculation, creativity enhancement and so on.

I view "Mind Hacks" as more informative, though, so would recommend this as the first one to get, though the next purchase in this should be the "Mind Performance Hacks."

Book Description

Previous editions of this book have helped over 100,000 students and professionals write effective proposals for dissertations and grants. Covering all aspects of the proposal process, from the most basic questions about form and style to the task of seeking funding, Proposals That Work offers clear advice backed up with excellent examples. In the new edition, the authors have integrated a discussion of the effects of new technologies and the Internet on the proposal process with URLs listed where appropriate. In addition, there is a new chapter on funding for student research and a completely written chapter on qualitative research. As always, the authors have included a number of specimen proposals, two that are completely new to this edition, to help shed light on the important issues surrounding the writing of proposals.

Clear, straightforward, and reader-friendly, Proposals That Work is a must-own for anyone considering writing a proposal for a thesis, a dissertation, or a grant.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Only Proposal Guide You Need.......2002-12-30

As any graduate student will tell you acceptance onto a Ph.D program is largely based on submitting a successful proposal. Thereafter, as long as the researcher adheres to the proposal, graduation is virtually guaranteed. I am a Ph.D student who used the book to construct my proposal, which was summarily accepted by the research committee with minor changes. This appears to be contrary to what many Ph.D hopefuls experience. The book is expensive however I would highly recommend it. The proposal hurdle is well worth overcoming professionally.

      Book Description

In the new edition of WRITING WITH STYLE, the authors continue to provide students with guidance on how to prepare a research paper using APA style. The book applies a "learning through modeling" approach, which is in keeping with the social work profession's literature. It is replete with exercises that reinforce and instill the basic elements of the APA style. Students can fill in the exercises directly in the book and thereby develop their writing skills.

3 out of 5 stars Good guide but not worth the $27 I paid........2006-10-13

This information written in the Preface would have been helpfeul before I purchased this book. (Social workers should not expect this book to replace the Publication Manual. They should be aware that this is one of several reference books that belong on their desk when they write. Somtimes the transition from first-year English composition classes to social work classess leaves students confused because these first-year classes tend to be taught with emphasis on the Modern Language Association (MLA) style. In these courses students learn how to organize a coherent paragraph, how to develop a thesis statement, and how to write an essay or a library research paper in generic (MLA-based)style. This is a useful start, but it does not enhance students' technical writing skills when it comes to using APA gudelines. They must now learn to write using APA Style, which includes not only rules made excilict in the Publication Manual but also other conventions that constitute the unwritten rules of the APS style. For example, rather than write about what other authors "said" or "believed", they should concentrate on what the author "found or "reported". Also, the title of an article should not be mentioned in a literature review, and passive voice may sometimes be used.)

      Book Description

"Coley and Scheinberg have taken their outstanding guide to proposal writing, a volume popular with both students and practitioners, and made it even better."

--From the Foreword, by Armand Lauffer, The University of Michigan

In this Second Edition of Soraya M. Coley and Cynthia A. Scheinberg’s book, Proposal Writing, the authors have broadened their scope while still maintaining the aspects that made the First Edition a bestseller. They have added a chapter on program development; updated the material to reflect changes in service delivery, such as collaborations; and addressed the use of technology in proposal writing.

As in the First Edition, this book is written primarily for students or beginning-to-moderately experienced grantwriters working in nonprofit corporations, school districts, or city or county agencies, and provides a step-by-step guide to writing a successful grant proposal.

      5 out of 5 stars Proposal Writing.......2001-06-19

The book is an easy to follow guide to proposal writing. It's small and not intimidating. It's also easy to read. As a first time grant writer, I found it useful and plan on keeping it for future grants. Definitely recommend for first time grant writers.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource! Good practical help!.......1998-12-23

This book helped me to write a federal grant application. I enjoyed the easy-to-read style! I expecially liked the sample goals and objectives and the evaluation section.

      Book Description

Through proven learning experiences that are as close to real-life practice as can be obtained from a book, DIRECT SOCIAL WORK PRACTICE: THEORY AND SKILLS prepares social work students for effective work in the field. Many of the case examples are drawn from social work practitioners as well as the authors' own practice situations. Long praised for its appropriate level of rigor, the book integrates the major theories and skills that direct social work practitioners need to understand and master--thus giving the book its reputation as the classic source for helping students learn direct practice skills. Consisting of four parts, the book begins by identifying the mission of social work, its values, and knowledge base. The authors then differentiate generalist from direct practice and explore roles of direct practitioners. Common elements amongst diverse theorists are then examined while key intervention strategies and various client population and practice settings are presented. Specifically, Part One provides the foundational/values and knowledge base material; Part Two is devoted to the beginning phase of the helping process; Part Three addresses the middle phase (goal attainment strategies), discussing four intervention approaches; and Part Four clarifies the termination phase of direct practice.

3 out of 5 stars Rather dull, but easy to read.......2005-09-03

This textbook is not the most thrilling read of a lifetime, but its also not difficult. Somestimes the organization is a little odd, but it could be worse.
If its not required, I wouldn't buy it.

3 out of 5 stars Refers to 6th edition, copyright 2002.......2002-10-26

A solid revision of a very useful textbook and clinical practice resource. Numerous typographical and typesetting errors will annoy those who expect more from the publishers of this social work classic, who appear to have rushed publication. Infotrac has only marginal value to working professionals and no value for enrolled students with library access. Wait for the second printing or stick with the 5th edition if you can.

4 out of 5 stars Good for beginners in practice/good resource for veterans.......1999-03-24

I had this book last semester as a MSW student at WVU. I have found it useful as a resource guide for my current practice as a family-based therapist as well. I would recommend this book to all those out there in practice.
