Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Book Description

Art/Invention/House is an authoritative and handsomely illustrated presentation of forty new houses-many published here for the first time-exploring the creativity of top architects around the world, ranging from firms that specialize in residential work to those for whom a house is a rare indulgence. The houses shown here are understated or audacious, but never conventional. Each of these cutting-edge projects, whether built in town or country, represents a world apart from its surroundings. Some have only trees for neighbors; others are shoehorned into tight urban sites, perch on precipitous slopes, or cling like limpets to the coastline. But every house is one of a kind, the product of dialogue between demanding clients and creative designers around the globe. The book includes the world-renowned firms of Archi-Tectonics/Winka Dubbeldam, Will Bruder, Wallace Cunningham, Gwathmey Siegel, Steven Holl, Rick Joy, Thomas Phifer, and Richard Meier in the US; TEN Arquitectos, Alberto Kalach, and Michel Rojkind in Mexico; Marcos Acayaba and Marcio Kogan in Brazil; Seth Stein in the UK; Alberto Campo Baeza in Spain; Herzog & de Meuron in Switzerland; Georg Driendl and Hugo Dworzak in Austria; Jyrki Tasa in Finland; Alvaro Siza in Portugal; Tadao Ando, Shigeru Ban, Hitoshi Abe, and Kengo Kuma in Japan; and Glenn Murcutt and Harry Seidler in Australia.

4 out of 5 stars The Poster Book.......2006-07-17

The book is giant in size (12.3" x 12.4" x 1.4") with extra large poster size photographs, some of them covering 2 sf areas.
The human eye cannot overview the poster size photographs from the reading distance. In order to overview, the reader should step aside from the book, look to the photographs from the distance, than take the book and read again. So, the book is missing "gold proportions and the human scale".
Most of the projects in this book are professionally shots, however some of the enlarged photographs have poor quality and not belong to a book of this caliber.
The design of sheet compositions with the floor plans, sketches and the photographs is very tasteful. The content is informative and describing, although missed important information from the project data such as start and completion of the construction.
Overall, this is outstanding book with the nice collection of the projects with the detailed visual and text information.

5 out of 5 stars Great compilation of recently completed houses in a handsome book!.......2005-12-31

5 out of 5 stars Dream Houses.......2005-12-29

I've seen a lot of books on new houses, but this one stands out from the crowd. The selection of 40 new residences covers the world, from a forest in northern Japan to an idyllic bay in New Zealand, by way of Lake Bled in Slovenia and a hillside in Mexico City. There are masterpieces by celebrated architects and exciting work by people who deserve to be better knownThe brief text explores each house and the needs and personalities of its owners. The pictures are exceptional and are printed large enough that you can imagine yourself walking through these rooms. Now I've bought it the biggest challenge is to discourage friends from "borrowing" it.

5 out of 5 stars The House is Not only a Home, It is Art!.......2005-11-11

Michael Webb and Rizzoli have done it again. Since their last highly successful BRAVE NEW HOUSES: Adventures in Southern California Living book in 2003 Webb has pushed the edge of architecture and design and the result is a truly original look at houses as art. Recognized as one of the country's leading architectural critics, London-born Webb now lives in a Neutra 'house' in Southern California and writes articles for Architectural Review, Architectural Record as well as his own widening collection of books.

In this elegantly designed and beautifully illustrated book, Webb addresses homes that are truly unique - from concept, to site, to architect/client philosophy, to construction. Though some of these homes have been featured in other places, many of the forty odd homes are 'unveiled' in this book. Each home is viewed in its entirety with the focus on the aspects that make each home 'on the edge'. The sizes, shapes, settings - all aspects of these artworks are discussed with Webb's conversational yet always erudite manner. Included are homes designed by architects form the USA, Mexico, Brazil, UK, Spain, Switzerland, Austria, Finland, Portugal, Japan, and Australia. And a more creative klatch of contemporary architects could probably not be assembled.

The real pleasure of this large book is the presentation of these unique houses as works of Art. While there is a large audience for certain architects of the 'home' styles (Frank Lloyd Wright, Richard Neutra, Greene and Greene to name but a few), these artists are now historically based and the architects represented here are boldly modern and sophisticated. Some of the names here included are recognizable by the cognoscenti: the others soon will be! This is a magnificent 'Art Book', simply of another medium, and deserves a place in the library of great art (as well as great architecture) lovers. Highly Recommended. Grady Harp, November 05

Book Description

"It rips, and cuts, it makes a horrible racket--a chainsaw is a frightening thing. I write not to glorify its terrible power but to acknowledge its place in the most sweeping revolution that technology has wrought in the 20th century--the revolution of individual empowerment."

So begins author David Lee in this first-ever book on the worldwide history of the chainsaw, an invention that transformed the forest industry and eventually became the indispensable companion of every red-blooded country dweller. Chainsaws, it turns out, have a curious history and since the 19th century they have taken on many forms. From 600-pound steam-powered behemoths to gas chainsaws mounted on wheeled carriages to diesel chainsaws and electric chainsaws with portable generators, this book musters a curious collection of contraptions and inventors the like of which we haven't seen since Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines. Carefully tracing the evolutionary threads of countless short-lived pioneer devices, author Lee, working together with a worldwide network of chainsaw buffs, traces the roaring, woodchip-and-oil-sprayed progress of what is now a lightweight modern machine that holds a place of honour in the world's woodsheds.

Chainsaws is a handsome gift book full of wonderful old and new photos along with priceless chainsaw ephemera that will warm the heart of anyone who's ever held a power tool. From Andreas Stihl's Black Forest experiments to Vancouver's booming WWII chainsaw industry, to the postwar race to develop one-man saws, the rise and fall of Canada's proud Pioneer brand, and the late entry into the field of the centuries-old arms manufacturer Husqvarna,it examines why the chainsaw is no good for massacres (in Texas or elsewhere), and why it is unlikely to replaced by any new high-tech inventions such as lasers.

4 out of 5 stars Good Book!.......2003-02-25

This is an interesting collection of essays on the origins of many common household items.

Some of these essays stray off the point a bit. I'm still not clear as to how the Nautillus exercise machine, or shatterproof glasses, or the electrical outlet were invented. But all-in-all, this book was informative as well as easy and fun to read. In addition to (or, in a few cases, instead of) just an account of how something was invented, it tells you some interesting (and sometimes disturbing) details of the lives of various inventors.

I haven't read Charles Panati's "Extraordinary Origins of Everyday Things" (which some reviewers think is better than "House of Invention"). Perhaps that one might be worth a look too. In any case, I recommend Mr. Lindsay's book as well.

3 out of 5 stars THE MOTHER OF ALL INVENTIONS?.......2003-01-01

Here's a fun way to bust out of the doldrums and learn about the really important things in life. Author David Lindsay has stuck his nose (and eyes and feet and Lord-knows-what-else) to find the truth behind the origins of those things we take for granted. Like Vaseline. It was first marketed as a medicine, Doris Day slathers the stuff on her nightly (let's face it, her skin is oh-so-soft) and its inventor ate a spoonful of the stuff every day...and lived to his 90s. Like the intermittent windshield wiper. It was invented by a man who was hit in the eye with a champagne cork on his wedding night, causing permanent damage. (All that squinting in rainy weather.) Like the brassiere. The over-the-shoulder boulder holder was invented by the very first Girl Scout of America as an alternative to the restrictive corsets of the late 19th-century. Now, really, would we make this stuff up?ONS

2 out of 5 stars History of Technology Lite.......2002-08-25

There's nothing actively wrong with this book . . . Lindsay gets his facts straight, he has a gift for brief, deft sketches of colorful people, and the 21 short essays that make up the book are pleasant-enough reading. It works well in situations (the bathroom, the carpool line at your kid's school) where reading opportunities come regularly but in small chunks. Lindsay is at his best when he's doing the small-but-important inventions: the brown paper bag, breakfast cereal, the bra, and so forth. Let loose in the big time (television, alternating current), his storytelling goes flat . . . perhaps because of the need to compress so much information into a few pages. Because most of the inventions he covers *are* small, however, the flatness never lasts for long. I never put the book down unhappy.

Why, then, only two stars?

Because Charles Panati's _Extraordinary Origins of Everyday Things_ is just as much fun and far more comprehensive. Because James Burke's books, such as <_The Knowledge Web_ and _Circles_, are more audaciously conceived and have a better sense of history. Because Henry Petroski's _The Evolution of Useful Things_ tells the inventors' stories and analyzes the process of invention.

Why bother with hamburger--even really good hamburger--if you can get steak for the same price?

5 out of 5 stars Offbeat book on the origins of everyday products.......2002-03-01

"House of Invention" is a spry, anecdotal account of (mostly) obscure inventors and their inventions. Inspiration for new products could come from many sources. For instance, a champagne cork in the eye led to the invention of the intermittent windshield wiper.

The inventor, Robert Kearns is still in the process of suing the big auto manufacturers for stealing his patent. Chrysler and Ford have already paid off, but there are still GM, Saab, Honda, Rolls-Royce, Mercedes, etc. that refuse to acknowledge their theft. Mr. Kearns plans to spend the rest of his life in court, and I hope he keeps winning. As the author of "The House of Invention" puts it:

"In the annals of technology, tales of corporate abuse are strewn across the American century like so many highway accidents, and in a sense, Kearns has fought for the many inventors who ended up as roadkill."

Nikola Tesla did not profit from his invention of the alternating-current electrical motor as much as did the company that was to become General Electric. Eventually GE, under the leadership of J. P. Morgan also did in Thomas Edison and his championship of direct current (although one does not usually think of the Wizard of Menlo Park as roadkill.)

Then there was George Squier, inventor of the `wire-wireless' technology that allowed radio signals to travel through a telephone line (the precursor to `Muzak'), who was robbed of his patent by AT&T.

Overall, this is a very light-hearted, irreverent book about inventors, but it does have its serious moments. In addition to the numerous inventors who ended up cheated and broke, there is also the graphic story of how alternating current triumphed over direct current as the preferred method of capital punishment.

My favorite stories involve the invention of the pencil by the ancient Egyptians, who also came up with the first door lock, and the invention of the flat-bottomed paper bag by the American, Margaret Knight. The author tells tales of many eccentrics, including the man who invented Vaseline and then ate a spoonful of the stuff daily for the rest of his life (he died in his nineties).

Here was someone who truly believed in his product.

1 out of 5 stars Panati's 'Extraordinary Origins / Everyday Things' is better.......2000-10-29

Lindsay seems to have relied very heavily on Charles Panati's classic "Extraordinary Origins of Everyday Things" - still a bestseller. Whereas Lindsay covers a few items, in brief, Panati covers hundreds, and in depth. And, too, Panati's book sets the format of taking you through rooms in a home - bathroom, bedroom, kitchen, etc. - to explain the origins of items found there. I find it strange - troubling, in fact - that in Lindsay's end-of-book "Suggested Further Reading," he lists scores of books, but not Panati's. Then again, maybe it's not so strange after all. Panati's classic is half the price and twice the info and entertainment.

        Book Description

Norval Morrisseau is a shaman, a storyteller and the inspiration for one of Canada's most vibrant and exciting national art movements - The Woodland School of Art. Through his magical paintings he has given life to ancient Native legends and fables and has helped to restore the dignity of his people. Through his essays and notations that accompany his paintings, we learn of the cultural and historical influences that have shaped his art. He tells us, in his own words, about his travels to the dream-like House of Invention, his source of inspiration for both content and colour. We learn of the myths and legends of his ancestors, passed down orally through generations, which form the basis of his work. The second part of the book, which contains paintings and other pieces from the earlier days of Morrisseau's career, opens with an essay by Donald C. Robinson, in which he describes Morissau's unique approach to the physical act of painting and explains how Morrisseau has developed as a master technician and colourist despite having little formal training. Robinson has the exclusive right to represent Morrisseau and his work.

5 out of 5 stars A thorough guide to the art of Mr. Morrisseau.......2000-08-03

This is a fine book which gives the reader a thourough understanding of Norval Morrisseau's art. Mostly color with some black and white photos. The art is exquisite and Mr. Robinson's love of his friend and his art can be felt with each paragraph. If you want a beautiful art book for your coffee table or simply want to learn more about this fascinating artist (Picasso and Chagall both took in his showing in Paris)- this is a great book. I have several copies in my home...
