Book Description
Unlike many other books in the field that simply compare managers working at home in their various cultures, International Dimensions of Organizational Behavior describes the approaches of successful managers in interacting with people from a wide range of cultures, including from Asia, Africa, Eastern and Western Europe, the Middle East, and people from both North and South America.
Customer Reviews:
Great .......2006-08-12
This book is very scientific, deep and practical. Simply great. I'm a Psychologist, Business Consultant for Multinational Corporations and is absolutely useful
Good overview, nicely written.......2005-05-10
Nancy Adler presents a good overview on the topics in international HR Management. It is great as a textbook for class and a perfect starting point for novices who want to get into inter. HRM. The book is not overwhelmingly deep, but it is concise and has an efficient way of conveying the main concepts of culture and communication, synergy, teams, leadership, negotiations. Adler writes well making it easy to understand what she means and a fast read. She uses small cases to illustrate each problem she addresses, which are sometimes a little bit too simplistic for non-students. For me, a great advantage of the book is the comprehensive lists of references per chapter. This makes it easy to go further in topics I am especially interested in. The critique a have with almost all "international version" textbooks is, that it explicitly addresses Americans.
Great Textbook About International Management.......2003-01-26
I have had the pleasure of using Adler's book for several years now. Simply put, it is far more enjoyable to read than the average textbook and is packed with useful information for those wanting to learn.
Adler does a superb job of addressing the various dimensions of culture. She explains culture quite clearly and makes many connections to management practice. But maybe what I like best is that Adler goes beyond explaining. Each chapter contains vignettes discussing different cultural experiences. The short descriptions are interesting and lively. I have also noticed that the quantity and quality of vignettes has improved in the fourth edition.
Overall, the scope of this book seems quite thorough. National culture, workplace behavior across cultures, communication differences across cultures, creating synergy, multicultural teamwork and negotiation, global leadership, and the expat experience are all discussed. My favorite chapters tend to be early in the book (culture, teamwork, and synergy). It appears that these areas represent the author's greatest strength. The research informing each chapter is thorough and quite up-to-date. Maybe the weakest chapter, in my view, is chapter three which deals with communication. I suspect that maybe the author steps a bit beyond her expertise and is not able to touch on the deeper issues of cross-cultural communication (as she touches on the deeper issues in teamwork or other chapters). The result is a good chapter and sound discussion that maybe lacks the richness found in other parts of the book. She sets the standard so high in other chapters and I was hoping for the same here.
I have used this text for several years in intercultural management courses for undergraduate business students. The students seem to enjoy the book and encourage me to keep using it. I guess that is the highest praise we can give any text--students like it.
Social- Business Psychologist, PHD student.......2002-03-24
It was the basic source for my MSc project. Very helpful and very modern in its writing.Nancy Adler reached her destination. Recommendable for cross-cultural social and business analysis
Extremely Useful.......2001-05-08
As a cross-cultural trainer based in the United States, I needed to find a pragmatic book that both students and sophisticated business people would find helpful. At the same time, it had to provide a lot of solid information in an easy-to-read format. Dr. Adler's book is it at ERUdyne! Actually, we have had to replace our copies many times as they keep disappearing after positive reviews from our clients!
My copy is dog-eared. I recommend it to anyone who needs to understand how culture impacts global business organizations today. It contains excellent questions for reflection, charts, summaries and references.
Dr. Adler's book makes a positive difference in one's perception and understanding of the real challenges facing global businesses. It also provides good case studies with a step-by-step guide for addressing global organizational behavior issues. I couldn't ask for more in one text.

Book Description
International Management is the most comprehensive introduction to cross-cultural management currently available. It demonstrates how cultural factors influence behavior in the boardroom and the workplace, and examines the skills needed to manage across national borders. For the third edition, the text has been extensively revised and updated to include new material on globalization and localization, strategic management, and the knowledge company. In addition, it has been restructured to look initially at how culture affects the structures and systems of a company, and then at how these internal arrangements influence international and strategic management. An appendix on dissertation and project writing has been added to make the text even more student-friendly.As in previous editions, the numerous examples included in the book are drawn from a wide variety of sources and are truly international, being sourced from the US, Europe, and Southeast Asia. Its clear linking of management theories and practical examples will continue to make this text popular with both students and instructors.
Customer Reviews:
Not the best choice for Cross Cultural Differences.......2007-01-09
This book is over-priced and offers little academic or practical value for lecturing Business Students. No instructor's manual available. It seems if the author took several resources and crammed it all together in one publication. I am quite disappointed with this purchase and for using this in class.
Book Review.......2006-03-17
I purchased the book for a class I'm taking. It has some errors in it (it refers to President Bush as a former Senator when he was running for President). It's very straight forward and mildly bland. Several students in my class have commented that it reads like an "Army manual." Mead and the publisher are British, which is probably the reason for this.
In this modern world, don't expect much.......2005-12-15
I actually have taken 2 courses with the author and can tell you that his lectures are exactly like his book: outdated, general, non-applicable, and not worth the money. Here is a summary of the book in one sentence: Cultures are different, and a manager must be sensitive to those differences. -->Duh.
The real problem lies in the fact that the author has no real world business experience. Who would you rather have write a book on international management? a real-world, experienced manager, or an academic stuffed in an office reading about management from books and articles, and then compiling it all into his own book?
Anyways, don't bother with this book.

Book Description
Organizational Dimensions of Global Change is the first book in a new series designed to facilitate, across discipline and national boundaries, an emergent dialogue around the issue of global change and cooperative potential. Written by an interdisciplinary group of leading scholars, the book explores how organizational scholarship and thinking can inform an understanding of global change issues and examines the potential of cooperation as a practice, an organizing accomplishment, and as a value for understanding issues of global change. It opens up conversations and research paths and addresses basic questions such as: What do we mean by global change research? What can organizational scholarship contribute to understanding the human dimensions of global change? If we were to offer a priority agenda for research and inquiry, what questions would we be asking and what kinds of research would have a high probability of making a large contribution to knowledge as well as a timely relevance for action? Topics discussed include global women leaders, corporations as agents of global change, international networking, the development of global environmental regimes, and collaborative knowledge creation. Organizational Dimensions of Global Change is an essential resource for students and scholars in the fields of organization and management science, policy studies, international relations and development studies, earth systems science, as well as the disciplines of sociology, economics, anthropology, political science, and psychology.

For those interested in international relations.
Customer Reviews:
Understanding Ethnic Conflict.......2004-05-04
In "Understanding Ethnic Conflict", Taras and Ganguly talked about the cost of ethnic conflicts in the world. He emphasized on four major points: the cause of ethnic conflict, how does the international organizations react to it, why some ethnic conflicts become internationalized, and what can be done about the conflicts.
The authors tended to give different answers accordingly to different conflicts. They claimed that not all conflicts are similar and not all conflicts can be applied to just
single theory. In the book, they laid out different causes of each conflict. For example, the cause of conflict in Chechnya was from the history of suppression done by Russians
to the Chechnya people. The conflict in Quebec is due to the differences in language barriers and cultural differences. As for conflict in Sri Lanka, the Sinhalese, who are the rulers, feared of losing power so they organized the nationalism idea.
Taras and Ganguly also emphasized that one conflict drew international attention while others do not. For example, the conflict in Chechnya does not draw international attention because there are no interests for other states to risk being involved. But the Yugoslavia conflict drew attentions from international community because the two sides
involved different civilizations.
The writers also emphasized how important the third parties are to solving the ethnic conflict. The international organization such as the United Nations, major powers, regional powers, and international governmental organizations should be involved in
settling disputes. They also criticized each organization such as the weakness of the United Nations for not having its own military.

Book Description
The Human Right to Water traces the issue of the right to water through a number of international legal instruments, particularly General Comment No. 15 which recognizes such a right. It analyzes the international legal regime for human rights, and argues that the nexus between development, water and human rights is well established therein. Although the central theme of the Study is General Comment No. 15 issued by the Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights in 2002 which explicitly recognizes a human right to water, the Study argues that the Comment supports the idea that there is an incipient right to water emerging in international law today. This right is buttressed by a large number of soft law instruments, emerging customary international law, as well as an increasing number of domestic law instruments.
The authors are recognized experts in their fields. Salman M. A. Salman is Lead Counsel in the Environmentally and Socially Sustainable Development and International Law Group (ESSD and International Law) of the World Bank Legal Vice Presidency. He is the Bank's focal person on water law, and has published extensively in this field. Siobhan McInerney-Lankford is counselor to ESSD and International Law Group. She specializes in human rights law, and has written widely in this area.

Strategic Management of Technology and Innovation
ASIN: 0198295421 |
Book Description
There is a strong awareness that the new economy has arrived, and that firms and management need to focus on a plethora of new issues at present only dimly perceived. The astute management of technology can advance not only the fortunes of the innovators, but also of society at large. In this book, David Teece considers how firms can exploit technological innovation, protecting their intellectual capital, while staying ahead of the competition. He provides frameworks as well as practical advice, looking in particular at the organization structure most likely to support innovation, and how managerial decision and strategy affect the division of the gains. This will be essential reading for academics, managers, and students alike who want to keep abreast of contemporary strategic challenges.
Customer Reviews:
Highly Recommended!.......2001-09-20
In his preface, author David J. Teece promises a theoretical framework for understanding intellectual property and practical advice about managing it. Theory ultimately prevails in this book, but valuable nuggets of managerial guidance await any entrepreneur willing to dig for them. As a professor and as the presenter of Oxford's Clarendon Lecture in Management Studies, from which this book is drawn, Teece naturally tends toward abstract thinking. Some of the territory has been traveled before (i.e. the message that bureaucratic, hierarchical organizations tend to stifle innovation) but Teece adds a lot of intriguing material. We [...] believe analytically minded academics, entrepreneurs and executives will find Teece's volume illuminating, most notably his educated perspective on antitrust activism in the high tech arena. He concludes that government regulators should probably stick to regulating industries they understand. Well, if they want to understand intellectual property, they should start here.
Managing Intellectual Capital. What, how and by whom?.......2001-08-28
You are about to realize a misconception between two related but different terms: intellectual capital and intellectual property. Browsing throughout the book you will hardly find any references to intellectual capital, including a brief definition! Thus you should not be surprised by not finding any reference to intellectual capital in the Index. One would expect some heated discussion over this controversial concept before being offered a framework to manage it. Forget it. Despite author's attempt to write about the promising field of IC all sections seem to converge around the intellectual property discussion. The management of intellectual capital is something else than the management of intellectual capital. The wrong audiences may than be easily caught in this trap.
Provocative theoretical perspectives, some well-worn.......2001-05-26
This is an excellent book on the knowledge-based view of the firm. Although Teece is unsure in his preface whoether is succesfully addresses both academic audiences and managers. From an academic perspective, I can surely claim that this book is theoretically interesting. I recognized two portions of this book that draw heavily on Teece's work published previously in California Management Review (parts of Chapter 1 and all of chapter 4). What is certainly most interesting out of the 300 pages of small type is Section 2. This section provides a compelling set of arguments on the impact of market structures and governance modes on intellectual capital. Notabily missing, however, is incorporation of the knowledge-integration perspective that Grant et. al have been building for the past half decade. The case study on Pilkinton Glass is also well worn, and Teece clearly acknowledges that. Information technologists should not hold thier breath because this work seems to take a rather passive stand on the role of IT in mobilizing intellectual assets. The references at the end provide an impressive array of literature in economics that Teece draws on. The readibility and plausibility of Teece's arguments should come as no surprise to anyone who has read Teece's earlier scholarly work. Overall, I'd say that this was worth the thirty five dollars.
