An Excellent Book on the Most-Overlooked Facet of Business Today: Cultural Differences.......2006-04-03
As a cross-cultural consultant and graduate business professor, I highly recommend the sixth edition of the MCD book by Harris, Moran, and Moran. I currently utilize the new edition in both my online and onground MBA courses which deal primarily with international management and leadership issues.
The authors had cohesively distilled the topics of business, culture, and management into a readable and usable text that is easily interpreted by students, undergraduates included.
I have followed the authors' work on this series for the past 10 years and have seen nothing but the most relevant information being added to the subsequent editions.
As a consultant and an educator, I recommend the sixth edition of the MCD books without reservation. They are essential reading for anyone interested in understanding the integral effects on culture in this era of globalization.

Great Reference book for Cross-cultural Affairs.......2006-04-03
The book "Managging Cultural Differences" is a very good reference book for cross-cultural affairs. First of all, the book creates awareness about culture and subsequent cultural differences in an increasingly global world. It also offers the reader an introduction to the concepts of culture and beliefs and most importantly gives a guide on how to behave in foreign countries.
"Managing Cultural Differences" has helped me many times in business, for travels as well as my private life. I use my copy as a reference book.
The best benefit of the book is probably not only the cross-cultural guide but also the explanation of abstract concepts, their theoretical backgrounds and the practical implications thereof. The book also gives suggestions for further readings.

A Great Value for Students.......2004-07-27
Celebrating the 25th Anniversary of the first edition of this work, the authors proffer an expanded version of a text that has come to be regarded as a classic reference work by students everywhere. Their message is still the same, the understanding of our differences, the celebration of diversity, and the creation of partnerships of long-term benefit.
While many of the chapter headings are still the same or similar, considerable content has been added and the emphasis in the first half of the book is on providing information to enhance the building of global leadership strategies. We see the reemphasis on the development of cross-cultural communication skills and their presentation of both the positive techniques and the pitfalls to avoid.
Much of the thrust of the first half of the book is on cultural synergy which they view as representing a dynamic process that involves adapting and learning, and which involves joint action in which the total effect is greater than the sum of effects when acting independently. Synergy to them creates an integrated solution that does not signify compromise because nothing is given up or lost and it develops the potential members by facilitating the release of team energies..
The remainder of the first half of this text looks at managing transitions and relocations, an all too short chapter on managing diversity in the global workforce, women in global business, and effective performance in the global marketplace.
This latter chapter on effective performance in the global marketplace addresses issues of global leaders and strategic alliances, the psychological dimensions involved in intercultural contracting, the development of human resources, the essential factors of global performance, integrity in business organizations, ethical relativism, cultural changes that are occurring in many countries, and the management of technology transfer.
What puzzled me is that in the entire first section there is only one quotation from Fons Trompenaars and his name never even made it to the index. There are four plus pages on Hofstede's early work and his name can be found in the index.
That aside, for a book that is focusing on global leadership strategies for the 21st century to omit any mention or analysis of Trompenaars seven dimensions and the ground breaking work that he has done seems, to put it mildly, somewhat strange. There would seem to be a need for today's readers to go beyond Hofstede and to transition into the data base and findings of Trompenaars research and its application for effective global strategies.
Further to this, in their discussion of cultural synergy, there is no mention of the Trompenaars/Hampden-Turner concept of reconciliation. To achieve the true culturally integrated solution that the authors are promulgating would seem to require a reconciliation approach such as can be found in Trompenaars/Hampden-Turner's writings.
The second half of Managing Cultural Differences provides data on regional cultural specifics and addresses doing business with North Americans, Latin Americans, Asians and Australians, Europeans, Middle Easterners, and Africans. In these sections, not all countries are considered but for those that are included there is a rich data base and keen insights of considerable benefit.
Overall, this is a good book and judging by previous editions, is one that will be of great value to students keen on understanding the world around them.

With an adult population of 326 million and official unemployment rate of 15 million, the last thing India needs is labor-saving modern equipment. Over the years, India has implemented intensive population control programs but none were successful. The high birth rate has been attributed to early marriage, the emphasis on bearing sons by the Hindu religion, the security of having children to take care of parents in old age, and the low level of education achieved by the rural masses.
Climate and culture contribute to the high incidence of disease and influence the patterns of work. The hot weather season brings constant dust, which results in various infections~ and eye irritations and also limits the outdoor physical activity. The cold, damp rainy season brings on colds, malaria and rheumatism. Their practice of vegetarianism contributes to malnutrition and protein deficiencies. The people of India have a general syndrome known as "weakness" brought on by their constant exposure to epidemic diseases such as cholera and typhus, and the malnutrition factor.

2 books in 1 - A Must read for Global Communicators.......2007-05-27
The book is 2 books for the price of 1. Unit 1's 250+ pages is the 'meat & potatos' concept with the most important Chapter 2. If you only read 30 pages, read Chapter 2.
This unit should be standard training for foreign service, country negotiators and global business people to get beyond values like 'honest' / 'dishonest' communication and relate to each other in terms of cultural directness / indirectness (low & high context communication).
Unit 2's 250+ page is more of a reference book with details country by country for use when you need to connect with the relevant country culture.
The 1 down side (4 stars instead of 5) is that SO MUCH is packed in this 1 book as a text book that it is not easily portable to take with you on trips to foreign countries.
Landmark Text Updates Edition - An Excellent Academic Resource.......2007-03-12
The seventh edition of Managing Cultural Differences is a comprehensive updating of this classic text on multiculturalism. As an academic, I have utilized previous versions of this text in my classes and strongly recommend the new edition. This tome of over 700 pages cites concise examples of how leaders must understand the value of culture when conducting business across boundaries. The book is divided into two units, including Cultural Impacts on Business and Regional Culture Specifics which present both general and specific content for global business personnel.
The authors possess a staggering wealth of experience in the global business arena which assists in showcasing their credibility. As an academic, I personally like the Mind Stretching summaries at the end of each chapter. These summaries pose further questions for the reader to ponder before progressing to subsequent chapters. I also enjoy the numerous exhibits from both primary and secondary research sources which provide further illumination on relevant topics.
I recommend the seventh edition of the Managing Cultural Differences text without reservation. I believe that as the era of globalization ensues, every academic institution that deals with global topics should utilize this landmark book.

Malcolm S. Knowles is the founder of the theory of Andragogy (Adult Education), and I agree with him on many of the points he makes.
The problem is that the book seems to have been written for academics to accept Malcolm's theories, and not written for students who wanted to learn to be better teachers in Adult Education.
Unless you have to use this book for a textbook for a class, I would not buy it as your first introduction to Adult Education. I'm not sure which book I would buy, but someone must have written a better one to actually learn the subject!
Andragogy for the 21st century.......2005-03-02
Since the term "andragogy" was first coined, several theoretical schools have developed around the topic of adult learning. This book provides a context for Knowles' ideas about andragogy and demonstrates the relevance of his ideas in the 21st century.

This book was the text for an adult learning course, and all 300+ students judged the book to be incomprehensible. So many complaints were received that the instructor apologized, saying it was the only book the school could find. There is good information in this book, but you need dynamite to unearth it. I have a better than average vocabulary, but I had to keep a dictionary by my side as I read, and even then I found words from the text for which I could find no definition. Some chapters had to be read 4 times before I understood the authors' message. Reading this book was a guarantee for a nap or a headache. Please, somebody stop this book before it kills again!
very comprehensive look at adult learning theory.......2001-05-11
This book is like a one-stop shopping guide to Adult education. It is so comprehensive that I doubt it leaves out one development in the history of adult education. My only warning is that the opening chapters which basically trace many theories of learning (both adult and traditional) are hard to get through -- it reads more like a research paper that summarizes every major educational theory since the beginning of time. But, if you don't want to know that much, you can simply skip these chapters and get right to the meat of the adult learning theories which are more appropos. For those who need a quick primer on learning theories, you'll love the first few chapters for their abundance of quick summary information. A useful guide to adult education.

This ambitious book, based on a seven-year survey of more than 3,200 employees, examines how different generations view the workplace. Author Jennifer Deal handles the difficult task of presenting, distilling and interpreting the data according to age group and worker status. Her use of applicable real-life scenarios is effective in helping managers implement these findings, but the presentation of research data makes for weighty reading. We recommend this book to managers who have problems with intergenerational tensions at work, though Deal concludes that the generation gap is overrated and employees of all ages desire many of the same things.

Great textbook!.......2003-09-23
I am using this book as a textbook in a course that I facilitate for international engineers at the University of Manitoba. We're using the text to explore cultural parameters and the different ways they manifest themselves in different cultures, both generally and specifically in engineering business. I value the book for the work it does in framing the larger concepts behind specific cultural differences, but also for the practicality it offers through anecdotes and tips for working with other cultural styles.
While it's early in the academic term, this book has already been extremely useful in framing discussions in our class. Also, as I talk to employers in Manitoba, many have asked for the bibliographic reference to source the book for their corporate library.
Getting Multicultural Teams to Work!.......2003-02-23
We all know how much difference there is when a team functions well - the tricky part is getting it to happen. This new book tackles this topic in the context of Canadian engineering teams, which are almost all composed of people from many cultures. In this insightful book, Dr. Laroche includes lots of material to help get multicultural teams firing on all cylinders.
Written for both managers and technical contributors, the book uses a multicultural lens to look at management styles, teamwork, communication and career management. This new perspective drives home a central theme that cultural differences are key in how our teams work, and not widely recognized in their importance. In these kinds of abstract topics I find concrete examples very helpful, and the author includes numerous anecdotes drawn from his consulting background. These vivid examples show the profound impact of what sometimes seem like small issues, like the Mexican engineer who resigned the day after getting some negative feedback in front of his colleagues.
The book also includes a number of quantitative charts and tables showing how different cultures have quite different expectations of the importance of hierarchy, individualism, and risk tolerance. Having read this book, I now much better understand the experience I had in Canada managing an employee from another culture. What I experienced as a lack of assertiveness was actually the case of an employee expecting highly directive management, and their way of showing respect. Had I understood that well at the time, I would have approached the situation quite differently, even starting at the interview stage. On the flip side, the book would have helped me a lot during my two-year stay in France. In particular, it wasn't until I read this book that I realized that when my French colleagues were jumping in and finishing my sentences, they were demonstrating their agreement by showing they knew how my sentences were going to end!
The book closes with a number of interesting comparisons, like the different emphasis on theory and hands-on work that exist between engineering schools in Canada, the United States, France and Mexico. And to finish off, an entertaining appendix containing explanations of expressions which we take for granted from such diverse areas as baseball ("to be out in left field" - to make no sense at all) and warfare ("loose cannons" - ones which are not fixed down, and fire a different direction each time).

This book is really helpful in a way to understand cultural difference. It focuses on new immigrants issues, multiculture team work and communication barrier. Also focuses on why this has happend and how to overcome it. Different countries have different working style and one really understands this when reading this book. It also emphasises all the ideas a technical person needs to overcome all barriers and get aquainted with
multiculteral system.
The most important representation for me in this book are pages 69, 91, 93,and 148, as well as the graphs on pages 188, 216, and 217.

A Must Read.......2004-03-17
For some time now there has been a sea of confusion vis-a-vis the U.S. and European nations as to what is meant by cultural diversity. Discussions with trainers, a reading of the literature, and listening to different perspectives have amply demonstrated that the term cultural diversity has different meanings and different applications in the U.S. and also betwixt and between the variety of European nations. Our views of each other's definitions and treatments reflect a keen lack of accurate knowledge and understanding about one and other. And, while it is true that there have been a great number of books of varying degrees of quality written about diversity in the United States, little to nothing has appeared about European diversity.
Now, George Simons and his authors have brought a great deal of sense to the dilemmas of diversity and have made a successful attempt to clarify the air, explain the differences, and to provide positive comparative insights. This book is a first step but it is a very important step in awakening us to some of the fundamental issues of EuroDiversity . Additionally, he and the other authors place diversity in a broader scope.
In the Prologue Simons says:
Diversity is about globalization, organizational learning, and the
growing importance of knowledge management just as much as it is
about recruitment, equal opportunity, workforce demographics, and
social integration. It concerns the information technology that is almost
daily revolutionizing communication. It affects interactive networking and
transport. It is perhaps the critical issue in many mergers and acquisitions
- and often the least attended to. It is at the root of how organizations
transform themselves.
With this broad, and I believe perceptive, vision of diversity, Simons and his other authors have provided us with ten chapters that introduce some of the fundamentals of the diversity picture in Europe. Simons in the first chapter aptly entitled Patchwork: The Diversities of Europeans and Their Business Impact paints a picture of how diversity and diversity management in Europe focuses on their own objectives, philosophy, tools, and methodologies and how these may differ from the U.S. and other models.
The data in the next three chapters (The Legacy of the Past: How National and Regional Differences Continue to Effect Trade, Cooperation, Politics, and Relationships; Current Cultural Crises, Fears, Fantasies, and Foreseeable Futures; and Managing Diversity to Create Marketable Value Added from Difference ) represents the structure and responses from a questionnaire that was submitted to a select group of managers and professionals throughout Europe. The survey aimed at identifying the principle challenges that diversity faces in Europe, to recognize how these challenges affect business and organizations in Europe, and to help them report the best practices that have been developed in response to these challenges.
As we are learning in the United States, diversity impacts all aspects of corporate activities and in the next chapter, Europe Online: The "New" Economy and Virtual Collaboration from a Cultural Perspective, the impact and influence of technology has significant meaning for diversity concerns. Here the book looks at the future of European diversity in a wired world. It examines the changing nature of commerce, organizational learning, and expatriation and provides insight into some of the leading efforts and technologies.
More often than not diversity issues in the U.S. have focused on avoiding litigation, human resources development, and in more recent years enhancing the bottom line. Chapter six, Corporate Best Practice: What Some European Organizations Are Doing Well to Manage Culture and Diversity, offers us a much more inclusive picture as it presents an overall view of how diversity is thought of, acted upon and managed in some European countries. It also, very importantly, depicts the missing links in the corporate response to being and working in a diverse environment.
Getting to the nitty-gritty in chapter seven, The Cross-Cultural Transfer of Best Practices: Learning from European and American Experiences of Knowledge Management, the author looks at diversity from a different perspective from the historical role(s) it has had in the U.S. Here, we find an examination of knowledge management aspects of three European based global organizations which pays particular attention to how these companies look at the complex cross-cultural challenge of transferring knowledge, experience and values throughout their organizations worldwide. This chapter has particular value for American diversity professionals.
The succeeding chapter Sustainable Entrepreneurship in a Changing Europe: Pedagogy of Ethics for Corporate Organizations in Transformation, brings up the issue of "corporate citizenship" and social responsibility within our globalization efforts. These become essential ingredients of a framework for diversity in Europe, and hopefully elsewhere.
The penultimate chapter, Equal Opportunity for Women and Men in the European Union: The Case of E-Quality in Belgium, deals with gender relations in the European workplace and offers us a valuable case study.
Chapter ten, Who is the European? Prognosis and Recommendations, brings the whole book together. It looks at the difficult question of identity as an agenda for determining the both the social and the economic future of Europe and of the diversity initiatives that the present and future will require.
The book is indexed, has excellent chapter references, an extensive bibliography including Internet resources, and five appendices: Declaration on Cultural Diversity; Commission of the European Communities; Declaration on a European Policy for New Information Technologies; Survey of Diversity Challenges in the E.U. Region; and Benchmarking Initiative.
The book offers the American reader (and I dare say, many European readers) keen insights into the complexity of diversity issues in the E.U. It also offers all diversity professionals some major considerations in regard to the wired world and knowledge management in facing diversity issues. This is a first rate thought provoking work! It is a basic primer and should be required reading in national and international and global organizations!

very useful case studies. Based on actual events and which bring to life the tensions and misunderstandings inherent in cross culture negotiations. These are very useful for class exercises. PS As an instructor I would like to get hold of an instructors handbook but have not at the time of writing this short review, succeedded.
