Sew What! Skirts: 16 Simple Styles You Can Make with Fabulous Fabrics
Francesca DenHartog Manufacturer: Storey Publishing, LLC ProductGroup: Book Binding: Spiral-bound Similar Items:
ASIN: 1580176259 |
Book Description
Sewing is back! Young, crafty women are discovering the fun and creativity of working with fabric, needle, and thread to create simple, colorful skirts, suitable for showing off as wearable art. Sew What! Skirts assumes no prior sewing experience (and no home ec. class or mother with sewing skills!), and doesn’t get bogged down with overly complicated instructions or patterns.Customer Reviews:
What? No bias?.......2007-09-24
I really like this book, it does as many others reviewers have noted and gives you the knowledge to easily make skirts without a pattern. However, I was very surprised to find nothing at all in here about making bias skirts. I actually bought it assuming there would be modifications for bias layout. A skirt cut on the bias is swirly and hangs beautifully. Maybe there will be a Sew What! Skirts II including an easy method for lining up fabric at 45 degrees and estimating yardage, etc. All the skirts in this pattern are cut on the fold on the lengthwise grain. For now I will assume the construction is the same if I just turn the pattern piece I make 45 deg. Still, I recommend this book.
Dare I call it-DORKY?.......2007-09-18
When "Sew What! Skirts" arrived in the mail I assumed that I must have ordered the wrong book by mistake--this book appears to be at least 5 years old because the styles presented are so out of date. But guess what, I had ordered the right book, published in 2006.
I understand that the concept behind the book is to "create your own style" but the skirts presented are so old-school dorky that it leaves me completely uninspired...If you are interested in looking fashionable and not like an old school-marm, stay away from this one. Try Wendy Mullin's "Sew U" instead.
Frustrated by commercial skirt patterns?.......2007-09-16
I picked up sewing two years ago, starting with reconstructing items already in my wardrobe, then moving on to sew dresses from commercial patterns. However, when I tried sewing skirts for myself, the results always came out far too small. I just do not have the right waist to hip measurements for skirt patterns to fit me well without some serious alterations.
After picking up this book and following the (very easy!) instructions on how to draft my own pattern, boom! I end up with the skirt I've been envisioning for months after only an evening in the sewing room.
So Pleased.......2007-08-25
Love this book - it is broken down so that it is not overwhelming to try something new. The fit is fantastic using the formula to make the patterns. I have made three skirts from the book and can't believe how great they fit and look for the time and money spent - better than some of the high end stores. Every sewer should own this book.
Useful for beginners!.......2007-08-03
when i purchased this book, i was a beginner in sewing and in desperate need of useful tips and strategies to creating different styles of skirts. this book is very helpful and gives you ideas in creating some lovely skirts that may match any attire.

What'd I Say: The Atlantic Story

ASIN: 1566490480 |
Book Description
The official behind-the-scenes story of the meteroic rise of Rock and Roll by the people who made it history.
Customer Reviews:
What'd I Say? I say "fantastic.".......2005-05-28
Had it not been for Ahmet Ertegun and his family moving from Turkey to America, more than 75% of the music that would come out over the time afterward would never had come to be and the musical mainstream would dramatically have never been the same.
I consider Ertegun to be would one of the best musical geniuses of the 20th century for it was he that started the snowball rolling and it kept getting bigger and bigger. He had his own acetate-cutting machine when he was a kid (pretty neat) and wrote his own songs. Close with his brother, Nesuhi, the two were avid jazz fans. When Ahmet got the urge to make records and hire acts to record for him, he founded his own record company with partner Herb Abramson in 1947 from a $10,000 loan from Ertegun's dentist. The rest is history. Atlantic had a huge roster of stars from jazz and R&B greats of the '40s, '50s and '60s to hard rock bands of the '60s, '70s and '80s. It starts with background history on Ahmet and continues on with the start of Atlantic from the '40s to the present. This huge book chronicles it all loaded with quotes from artists and from Ahmet and the production team as well as tons of photographs. It is pricey but it is worth every penny. Thank you, Ahmet Ertegun. American music would never have thrived without Atlantic!
Must Have!!.......2002-07-31
Ahmet Ertegun what a Important figure in the Music Business? the Guy truly knew His stuff at making a label Important.just His Association with Ray Charles&Aretha Franklin alone speaks volumes to me.He had a strong Idea of what He wanted&He got it.in it's Hey Day Atlantic Records was as Important as Any Other Label then or Now.the one thing you get after reading this Book&Hearing the Atlantic Box Set is that Ahmet Ertegun could vibe with anyone.a Must Have.
Indispensable!.......2002-02-01
I had the supreme honor of working for Atlnatic Records as a promotions Manager in the '70s, so I saw first-hand a lot of what's in this book. I saw it through the label, the artists, radio and retail. And lemme tell you, the book is spot-on accurate. The two words that best describe Atlantic Records are sophisticated and engaged, and those characteristics come top-down from the founder, Mr. Ahmet Ertegun, and through all of his management.
While the book is an amazing account of Atlantic Records, what is more is the indispensable perspective on the music business at large. For anyone even remotely interested in the history of this industry and its artists, this book is vital.
The cost is a bit pricey, but the old saying you get what you pay for has never been more true. The oversized book features fantastic photography and superb quality. I just wish it would have had included a 30-song sampler of the history of Atlantic artists.
This is one big beautiful book.......2002-01-11
First of all, this book is huge and weighs a ton. That is appropriate for the subject matter, because Atlantic Records is a huge presence in the history of rhythm & blues and rock. Chock full of pictures and commentary, this presents a totally fascinating portrait of Ahmet Ertegun and his record company, including all the great artists associated with Atlantic. From the early days with artists such as Ruth Brown and the Clovers, through the early career of Ray Charles, and on to Otis Redding, Solomon Burke, Wilson Pickett and the incomparable Aretha Franklin, Atlantic Records made its reputation in R&B. Less well known, but hardly less influential, is its presence in the jazz world, thanks to Ahmet's brother Nesuhi. In the late '60's Atlantic expanded into the field of rock with Cream, Led Zeppelin, and, later, the Rolling Stones, and was a major player in art/progressive rock by signing such bands as King Crimson, Yes, and Emerson, Lake & Palmer.
They could have ended the book in the early '70's, in my opinion, because after corporate buyouts and sellouts, Atlantic's imprint became less distinctive. Face it, Foreigner could have been on any label and it wouldn't have made much difference. Later forays into country music seem very un-Atlantic, to say the least. But during its heyday, there was no label putting out as high a level of quality music as Atlantic records, and this is its fascinating story.
Finally.......It was worth the wait!.......2001-08-26
Ahmet Ertegun has to be one of the true legends of popular music in the 20th century. When I first heard that Ertegun had penned the story of Atlantic Records 2 to 3 years ago, I immediately searched it out. But for some reason publication was delayed over two years. Alas it's here. This huge book has everything. First hand oral historical accounts on the birth of R&B with Ray Charles, Jerry Wexler, Otis, the Drifters through the evolution of 60's Rock with Cream, the Stones and Zepplin. The photos are spectatcular and Ertegun's own accounts insightful.....A brilliant man with impeccable taste. He may be the hippest son of a Turkish ambassador to ever found a legendary record label. While I personally can do without the more recent sections dealing with 80's and 90's music (how can you include Jewel with the likes of Ray Charles and Ben E. King?), this book is so huge (almost 10 lbs.) that the majority of the book far exceeds all expectations. At a time when lightweight books by airheaded groupies who played abolutely no role in the creation of a musical revolution somehow make their way into publication, this book stands alone as a classic account of a time when the musicians really were artist who paid their dues, song writers were stylists, and goood taste and genuine talent not only mattered, but actually sold records. If you are a true music fan, this book is the next best thing to being present at the birth of the R&B. One more suggestion, get the Atlantic R&B box set. If I were allowed to keep but one body of work from my music collection, this would be the one. It is the Rosetta Stone of modern R&B.

From Growing Up Country:
“I learned early in life that country is not a place on a map. Country is a place in your heart. In your soul. In the very depth of your being.” —Bill Anderson
“One of the things I like most about country life is that nothing much has really changed . . . My grandchildren and I are still walking and hunting in the same woods and fishing in the same creeks as I did with my father.” —President Jimmy Carter
“Food was at the heart of our home. And, other than those troublesome vegetables, I loved all of it. We fried everything—we’d have even fried water if we could’ve.” —Keith Anderson
“I can’t imagine what my life would have been without peaceful days, mountain streams, homegrown and home-cooked food, country church, and all-day singing with dinner on the grounds with family and friends.” —Dolly Parton
“Growing up country—there’s nothing like it. It’s growing up with your grandmother and granddaddy around . . . it’s a lot of love when you need it, great cooking in the kitchen, and always being real.” —Eddie Montgomery
Blackberry pie on the window ledge. The Grand Ole Opry on the radio. Sunday dinners on the table. Families swinging on the front porch after a hard day’s work. It’s all part of the country way of life.
Here, legendary country music singer Charlie Daniels introduces and edits a collection of heartfelt essays from an all-star cast of contributors on what it means to grow up country.
United by a love of music, these notables show us that country means more than just the twang of a guitar. They share a belief in hard work, integrity, strength of character, and having the courage not to quit. The stories here tell of rustic upbringings and rich spirits, of parents who believed in tough love and old-fashioned common sense, and of a strong sense of community, pride in your country, and a love of the natural world.
You’ll get an intimate glimpse into the lives of:
Country music royalty and all-time greats: such as
Dolly Parton, Barbara Mandrell, Brenda Lee, Dobie Gray, and Lee Greenwood
Southern rock gods: such as
Gary Rossington and Donnie Van Zant
The newest crop of stars: such as
Sara Evans, Toby Keith, and Clint Black
Special guests: such as
former president Jimmy Carter, and seven-time all around rodeo champion Ty Murray
These snapshots show how living country has allowed our favorite singers, songwriters, and stage performers to make a career out of doing what they love while never forgetting that when you’ve grown up country, home isn’t just a place where you live, it’s a state of the heart.

What the Koran Really Says: Language, Text, and Commentary
Manufacturer: Prometheus Books ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 157392945X |
Book Description
This collection of classical essays, some translated here for the first time, provide an objective, critical commentary on the traditions and language of the Koran, discussing its grammatical and logical discontinuities, its Syriac and Hebrew foreign vocabulary, and its possible Christian, Coptic, and Qumranic sources. Included among these essays are a comprehensive commentary on the discussion of the expression 'an yadin in Sura II; a discussion of the possible meanings of Sura IX.29, the longest sura in the Koran; and selections from the late Koranic scholar Richard Gell's INTRODUCTION TO THE QUR'AN and A COMMENTARY ON THE QUR'AN.
Customer Reviews:
the koran really is garbage and he says it like it is!.......2007-09-20
The koran is the most violent, disgusting pieces of garbage ever written by lunatics who were child molesters, caravan raiders, murderers and bandits. Islam, is a fanatical, cult-like belief that doesn't allow anyone to convert out and yet forces people in. Ibn Warraq, like myself, a former muslim, sheds excellent light, as usual, on the truth behind this demonic, cult-like evil ideology known as islam, not through his own opinion as these islamic lunatics will claim, but by the word of the koran itself. It is predictable taht the average mohammedan will sink into rage simply because mohammedans, being largely ignorant and uneducated, cannot stand having their ideology exposed through the very tenets fo their faith, which most don't even know how to translate into their native language. As predicted, muslim lunatics jumped on the opportunity to bash him and insult, which is what muslims always do since they are ignorant.
The truth of the matter is that the vast majority of muslims learn the koran's tenets by heart, as was also the custom in my familly before they left islam too. After reading and understanding that islam advocates murder, racism, genocide and war for an arabian moon god, many like myself and Ibn warraq leave islam. One thing the reader must appreciate aobut the author in general and in particular this work, is that he is trutuful, scholarly, honest and not critical for the sake of denouncing a violent cult.
He uses the koran ITSELF and tenets from it in order to expose its fallacy and violence, and correctly talks of the experience of millions of Persians, Turks, Indians and others who were made into obedient puppets, forced to accept an arabian cult withough really understanding the principles of hate towards other beliefs and the constant advocacy of war and strife against other communities. The review of lunatic, spiteful ignorant mohammedans on this book pretty much exposes their stupidity and ignorance, as Ibn warraq so eloquently does without resorting to name calling and hate as the mohammedans usually do. Ibn Warraq's extensive knowledge of the koran and its tenets, along with its meaning, make him an excellent authority on islam today as when he first published "why I am not a muslim".
Not at all scholarly.......2007-07-25
Herbert Berg has labelled him as polemical and inconsistent in his writing.[5] Fred Donner, a professor in Near Eastern studies, notes Ibn Warraq's lack of specialist training in Arabic studies, citing "inconsistent handling of Arabic materials," and unoriginal arguments. Donner also criticizes Ibn Warraq for what he describes as "heavy-handed favoritism" and "the compiler's [Ibn Warraq] agenda, which is not scholarship, but anti-Islamic polemic." -Wikipedia
This book is not at all interesting. It uses recycled material from other polemics. Not only that, his arguments have a weak base and are simply not at all scholarly. Taking a look at this other books, its no secret that Ibn Warraq is not in search of anything other than having people come to his side.
Since ibn warraq has an "inconsistent handling of Arabic materials," how can we accept this book as sound, seeing how the Quran is in Arabic?
weakly constructed arguments.......2007-07-18
I am not impressed... I was looking for something that was comprehensive in its argument and found this to be rather malicious and agenda-driven. If his arguments are indeed true in regards to Islam, intolerance, and jihad, then historically we must have lived in another world because applying these principles, as stated by the author, by the Muslims when they ruled the civilized world for 100s of years would have resulted in a much different world, not one where the European enlightenment got its spark and source of knowledge from.
I'm an American Muslim, Hamid Rasool, and here's what the Koran says:.......2007-06-14
I converted to Islam in Islamabad on 9/24/2000 and I have carefully read the Koran (King Fahd edition) twice, taking notes of the contents. The heart of the Koran is to enjoin the good and forbid the bad and to have faith. The Koran says, over and over, that these three things are required of an obedient Muslim (Islam means simply submission to the Will of God):
1. To show God that you love him, you must be constantly on the lookout for opportunities to do good deeds for your fellow man. The best good deeds are those that only God himself knows that you did. These deeds will help add weight to your storehouse above referred to as your "treasures in heaven" in the bible. The Koran says that one angel records each human's good deeds and another one records the person's bad deeds. The extensive record of the good and bad actions of the person will be examined on the last day of the existing systems to determine whether the person qualifies to enter into the renewed Garden of Eden where there will be no sickness or death, and where old people will become young, and waters will flow under the garden watering each living thing as necessary.
2. To show proper fear of God, you must avoid doing the acts which he has prohibited, such as illegal sexual intercourse, stealing, murder, etc. as per most religions, and most of all, not worshipping anything other than God himself; and
3. You must have strong faith in the munificence of God. This means you truly believe He is a good God with plans for good things in the future for his obedient ones such as mentioned in #1 above.
Read the Koran yourself and you will see this is the substance of the Koran.
Critique of 'What the Koran Really Says'.......2007-05-07
Tedious, academic, rarely really says what the Koran really says, just history of translation difficulties allowing much room for 'alternate' interpretation cop-out. More than a little disappointing, but scholarly veneer.

Pretty Pictures.......2007-01-17
This book has lots and lots of pretty pictures of fences that are not explained or detailed. There is decent information about rock walls, but otherwise this book really lacks in the substance needed to build fences.
Excellent purchase - highly recomended.......2007-01-16
The author (Jeff Beneke) has a nice way of explaining options in a approachable and casual manner making the project of designing/building a fence and/or gate much more fun. This book is very complete in it's review of latches, hinges, fence options for consideration along with beatiful photography and sketchs to illustrate ideas or concepts.
Even the guys at our local fence supply company where we bought our materials were impressed with this book when I used it to reference a particular piece of hardware.
Review from someone who's not known as a handyman.......2006-07-05
I bought this book to build a 6' privacy fence. I didn't know the first thing about building a fence but this book takes you by the hand and walks you through each step. The author does a great job of keeping things simple for the reader/beginner and includes illustrations and photos to help you envision the process. I keep referring back to sections of this book as I continure to build. Highly reccomend this book to all beginners.

Aaron Rose , and Chris Johanson Manufacturer: Damiani ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 8889431458 Release Date: 2007-03-01 |
Book Description
For more than a decade, Chris Johanson has been transforming day-to-day subject matter into simple stories in paintings that make bright, flat reference to illustration or folk art: The New York Times called their look "a down-on-its-luck, cheerfully abject cartoon style reminiscent of artists like William Wegman, Raymond Pettibon and Sue Williams." The same primary palette and angular compositions make Johanson's abstract works, which often take the form of geometric patterns or starbursts, into gleeful but sophisticated takes on Modernism. This, the artist's first major monograph, is also only the second title from Alleged Press, created by Aaron Rose of the influential Alleged gallery (1992-2002) and organizer of the groundbreaking traveling exhibition and accompanying catalogue, Beautiful Losers, in which Johanson featured prominently alongside artists such as Barry McGee, Margaret Kilgallen, Phil Frost, Spike Jonze and Harmony Korine. Please listen I have something to tell you about what is assembles Johanson's complete works to date, as well as several new pieces that have appeared nowhere else. Each spins a world from small, diffuse details: these are scenes where nude dancers, distracted pedestrians, forests, abstract rainbows and "good vibes" exist next to one another, on a sinister, comic edge that, even in its apparent brightness, can reflect the darkest places of human experience.

Customer Reviews:
So, that's what I was feeling!.......2007-09-05
On the advice of a friend, and during a particularly stressful period of my life, I read "Letting Go of Anger: The 11 Most Common Anger Styles..." I found it helpful to be able to identify what I was feeling and what to do to make me not feel that way any more. Since being angry (afraid?) is proven to have an effect on a persons overall health, I found this book to be very helpful in returning me to a homeostatic place. I have already loaned my copy of "Letting Go..." to another friend. This author has other helpful books on the same subject out there. I highly recommend them all.
Excellent for Troubled relationships!.......2007-04-12
I read this book in 2 days. It was amazing and I highly recommend it for anyone 15 and older. The content is succint, thorough, and insightful. It addresses many types of anger and provides you with cues to when you might blow your temper and how to control rage. Then it will cover issues like hate and resentment found in people who bury their frustrations over time and how they start to resent someone becuase they are not releasing that anger. This book is excellent and my comments are trivial compared to the insights. Pick it up and you will be surprised. It is the one anger book I would recommend out of the numerous choices available.
Enjoy and learn!
What's Your Anger Style?.......2006-12-07
I was pleased to find out about this book from a review in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. It categorizes anger into anger styles and tells what to do about them. A quiz with 30 yes or no questions helps you figure out your style.
Many of us have learned unhealthy ways to deal with our own anger or that of others. The book advises letting go of our anger, and to clearly express our wants and needs. Don't just vent your anger, channel it to make needed changes. Maybe it's road rage or seething over an injustice or whatever triggers your anger, you don't want to lose control and let the anger rule you.
