Book Description

Performance appraisal is one of the most important, continuous responsibilities of a supervisor. This book takes you through the process of conducting a performance appraisal, where you determine the quality of an employee's performance compared to set objectives, clarify present expectations, and learn the importance of providing employees with positive feedback. The authors break the process down into several steps starting with the planning, the preparation, and the writing of the performance appraisal form. The next step is to discuss the performance evaluation. You will learn how the supervisor should start the meeting, what needs to be included, how to close the meeting, and the follow-up responsibilities. It also covers some of the legal issues that can surround every performance evaluation. Tips on how the supervisor can protect his or her interests as well as the company's are also provided.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars How to design a good performance review system.......2007-05-17

The book begins with a foreword titled: "It's not supposed to be this way." The authors outline the problems and issues that many people have with performance appraisals. Then they make two key points. Here's the first one.

"Rather than a painful yearly event, performance appraisals can be viewed as a discussion, a culmination of small meetings held throughout the evaluation period."

In other words, performance review grows out of supervision. The rest of the book assumes that those "discussions" are going on. They're necessary to the process, but they're not the subject of the book.

The authors also make the point that: "In one form or other, performance reviews will continue to be a fact of our work life. This book is designed to cut through the anxiety and make the process, or series of discussions, more pleasant and productive."

Even though there are some people calling for the abolition of performance reviews as we know them, that's not likely to happen on a large scale any time soon. If the place that you work has a formal performance appraisal process now, you can count on having to deal with it for years to come.

I assume that if you're considering purchasing this book you will either be looking for ways to make your company's performance review system better or you will be looking for ways to make the process of actually doing performance reviews with your subordinates less daunting. For that reason, I'll split my analysis and recommendations into two parts.

Designing the Performance Review System

If you are responsible for designing or re-designing the performance review system in your organization, this is a book you should read. The research that's referred to matches up well with research I've done and read. The authors do a good job of presenting it and drawing conclusions.

They're also thorough. There's discussion of the current state of performance reviews, supervisor-employee relationships, scorecards, compensation, and much more.

Working Managers

If you are a working manager who has to do appraisals within your organization's system you will find some helpful material here, too. There's good discussion of how appraisals go off track. The authors cover different kinds of rating errors. And, there's material on actually conducting the appraisal.

But this part of the book is not as strong as the part about designing formal appraisal systems. There's not much depth or reach to the material on face-to-face discussion of behavior and performance issues.

That's because those are peripheral issues for the authors in this book. If you want more on face to face discussion, read my book, Performance Talk: the one-on-one part of leadership, which deals specifically with that aspect of supervision.

That's a quibble, though. Stress-Free Performance Appraisals is a solid, well-researched and well-written book that can help you improve the performance review process in your company.

5 out of 5 stars Great tool for HR practioners!.......2006-03-03

This is a great resource for HR consultants and practioners who are creating innovative performance management systems for their organizations. It addresses the underlying issues that prevent organizations from successfully managing performance and delivering candid and constructive feedback. I highly recommend it to all of my clients.

5 out of 5 stars Packed With Knowledge!.......2004-05-02

Everyone, it seems, hates performance appraisals. Some corporate cultures compel managers to "grade on the curve," which means that even good employees may have to fail. Even in less draconian corporate cultures, performance appraisals require supervisors to tell people about their shortcomings, an uncomfortable exercise for both the appraiser and the appraised. Meanwhile, lurking in the not-too-distant background is the threat of litigation instigated by an employee whose appraiser lets slip an awkward reference to race, sex, age or some other legally proscribed subject. This book tells you how to avoid the stress and anxiety of appraisals by focusing on a few basics. Authors Sharon Armstrong and Madelyn Appelbaum provide valuable counsel - albeit not terribly well organized - for people on both sides of the desk, both the supervisor and the employee. We recommend the authors' useful potpourri of advice, role playing exercises, case histories, evaluation forms and observations about appraisals to everyone who participates in a performance appraisal system and certainly to anybody who runs one.

5 out of 5 stars Top Flight Advice From A Known Expert.......2003-10-30

Sharon Armstrong is a known expert in the field of performance appraisals and human resources training and her latest book does a fantastic job of covering a critical issue for any manager. This is a must read for any manager or would-be manager - its well-written, easily readable, and has the capacity to improve any workplace. Strong reccommend!

5 out of 5 stars Fresh Perspective to a Tired, Worn Topic.......2003-10-20

As an experienced human resources professional, I have dreamed of the day when I could create a succesful performance appraisal program. And I had concluded that there was absolutely no way to please everyone. Cheer up -- Stress-free Performance Appraisals offers a fresh perspective to this tired, worn topic.

The text is, surprisingly, useful for human resources professionals, managers, and employees. It is visually attractive and chocked full of valuable questions, extensive documentation, great examples from well-regarded organizations, and ideas to cover a variety of cultures and performance appraisal philosophies. As examples of their recommendations, the authors weave -- chapter-by-chapter -- the scenarios of three fictional employees with varying performance levels. The book is an easy read in about three hours.

    Book Description

Human Performance provides the student and researcher with a comprehensive and accessible review of both performance in the real world, and essential cognitive science theory.

Human Performance has four main sections that cover both theoretical and practical issues:

    · Section One outlines the perspective on performance offered by contemporary cognitive science, including information processing and neuroscience perspectives.

    · Section Two presents a multi-leveled view of the performer as biological organism, information-processor and intentional agent. It reviews the development of the cognitive theory of performance through experimental studies and also looks at practical issues such as human error.

    · Section Three reviews the impact of stress factors on performance such as noise, fatigue and illness.

    · Section Four assesses individual and group differences in performance with accounts of ability, personality and aging.

        Customer Reviews:

        5 out of 5 stars What a relief!!!.......2007-05-07

Fantastic! A book that teachs effective ways of managing stress with out all the mumbo jumbo. I love the assessments provided at the end of each chapter; they help you learn more about yourself (how you handle stress, your personality, and how you react to others). I was required to use this book in a college stress management class, the text definitely help me understand relaxtion techniques and all of the components of stress and relief. It provides plenty of information that is clearly stated and easy to read and understand. I recommend this book to everyone wanting to find more effective and healthy ways of living life.

3 out of 5 stars This book is lacking in some ways...........2006-03-16

I purchased this book for about $75.00 and noticed that it is also for sale in a paperback version for about $12.00. I don't feel like I got my $75.00 worth, but if I paid $12.00 I would have had lower expectations.

What I liked about the book is that it was comprehensive in the sense that it touched on a lot of different areas. It also had excellent references. In fact, this is probably the best reason to own the book.

Unfortunately, there were several inaccuracies in the stress psychopysiology chapter and I think the author could have been more clear in his explanations. This shocked me given that the book is in it's ninth printing! I must admit the author lost some credibility with me when I hit this chapter, but the rest of the chapters seemed solid with respect to content.

The other chapters were more clearly written and I liked the roadblock model of stress that was introduced. This is certainly a useful model to use for thinking of stress intervention despite its apparent simplicity. This was probably the most interesting chapter to me. The other chapters had useful information, but they were rather superficial. They were good in terms of raising awareness about a particular topic, but they left me hungry for more information.

I did not like the author's tone and the way he delivered advice. I found that he made stress management and the solution to stress related issues sound too simple. His approach came across as stress management was simply a matter of applying his formula in an easy and mechanical way. In short, this seemed like a naive approach without mentioning the cognitive complexities that intefere with applying the formula!

If you are only looking for a survey of stress management and light coverage of the most common interventions, then this book can help you with that. However, if you want an in-depth look at the biology, I would consider "Why Zebras Don't Get Ulcers." Be warned, however, that this other book goes into a fair amount of depth on the biology side. However, it is extremely well written and I'm not aware of ANY book that covers the health implications of stress in a more eloquent (and often humorous) fashion.

With respect to psychological interventions for stress, I think there are many books that might serve the reader better. One book to consider that is good, but more specialized is Full Catastrophe Living. I would also look at books that explore the cognitive aspects of stress management. There are a lot of them out there.

My bottom line on this book is that for $75.00 you can buy "Why Zebras Don't Get Ulcers" and four other books that cover the same territory much better. However, for a survey course accompanied by complimentary readings, it would probably be adequate.

If I saw this book on the shelf of a bookstore, I would probably pass because it wasn't exciting to read and I think there is better stuff available. However, at $11.00-12.00 it would be tempting to buy it just for all the references.

4 out of 5 stars well needed substitue.......2005-09-28

This book is good if your taking this course in college because my professor allowed me to use since there really was no change but just another small chapter. The newest edition is about 100 dollars so if you can first ask your professor if you can buy this one to use in class. It is a better value than spending a lot on a new edition without much change.

1 out of 5 stars I guess it's funny if you like that sort of thing........1999-01-27

I cannot seriously believe that this book is supposed to be a text for college students. I think this one paragraph sums it up:

"Hey, Harry, here comes another shipment," said Joe Saliva to his brother. The Salivas live in the mouth and, when food enters, they help break it down to small manageable pieces. These pieces are then mailed by pneumatic tube (the esophagus) to Phil Hydrochloric Acid who lives in Stomachville. Hydrochloric acid (HCl) activates enzymes that break the food down even further so it can pass into the small intestine. Another town, Liver, sends Bobby Bile to help break down the fatty shipments. Once these shipments (food) are made small they can be placed in local post offices for delivery to various other cities (body parts). The pieces without ZIP codes are unusable and are discarded by being sent via the large intestine through the anus into space (that is, flushed into another galaxy).

There is nothing I can add to that.

5 out of 5 stars This book is both easy to read and an excelent resource........1998-02-07

I have been teaching stress management at the undergraduate level for about three years now and find this book to be an excelent resource for undergraduates. It is very easy to read and gives a great deal of information about the practicle application of stress management techniques. Those who plan on teaching a course in stress management would be well advised to have a good deal of supplementary material on hand as this book is directed toward the intro student and is not informative enough to develop lectures from. This is one textbook that students consistantly give high ratings.

              Book Description

The pace of life in our high technology world has quickened. Industries that do not become more efficient, often by requiring a faster production turnaround with less slack, are superseded. Because of this, workers face an environment in which they must perform under more time pressure and under greater task load, in which stress is more prevalent, and in which consequences of poor performance are more critical than ever before.

The dominant, if unstated, psychoanalytic paradigm underlying much stress research over the past fifty years has led to an emphasis on coping and defense mechanisms and to a preoccupation with disordered behavior and illness. Accordingly, almost any book with "stress" in the title will invariably devote a considerable amount of pages to topics such as stress-related disorders, clinical interventions, stress and coping, psychopathology, illness, and health issues.

This book presents basic and applied research that addresses the effects of acute stress on performance. There are a large number of applied settings that share the commonalities of high demand, high risk performance conditions, including aviation; military operations; nuclear, chemical, and other industrial settings; emergency medicine; mining; firefighting; and police work, as well as everyday settings in which individuals face stressors such as noise, time pressure, and high task load.

This book focuses directly on the effects of acute stress-- defined as intense, novel stress of limited duration--on performance. The effects of stress on task performance, decision making, and team interaction are discussed, as well as the interventions used to overcome them.

From Training to Performance in the 21st Century is a series sponsored by the National Society for Performance and Instruction (NSPI) which provides valuable how-to resources to help trainers, human resource professionals, and human performance technologists improve performance in the workplace. This book is part of the first three-volume set, Designing the Work Environment for Optimum Performance,
which shows how to fix the workplace, not the worker.
The set provides hands-on tools to help create work environments that support human performance.

Draws on numerous scientific studies and the author's professional experience in assessing real-life ergonomic problems in diverse workplaces nationwide to provide a systematic approach including reproducible checklists and worksheets--for performing ergonomic assessments to identify and correct health hazards at work.

He presents a variety of practical, cost-effective solutions from adjusting chairs, lowering computer keyboards, taking frequent microbreaks, and finding new ways of performing repetitive tasks--for preventing work-related health problems.
