    Book Description

The eighth edition of this best-selling book continues to provide readers with a realistic picture of actual collective bargaining and labor relations situations drawn from the authors' considerable experiences. Sections of actual labor agreements as well as arbitration cases and decisions of the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) and the courts illustrate and emphasize contemporary issues of collective bargaining and labor relations. Experts in the fields of labor law and arbitration have contributed “tips” on how the concepts in the book can actually be applied. In addition to covering history and law, workplace challenges, the collective bargaining process, and labor contracts, major features of this new edition include expanded coverage of public sector labor relations, international collective bargaining issues, union organizing and avoidance strategies, and collective bargaining in professional sports. Because of its comprehensive coverage and excellent resource material, this book is an excellent reference for human resource directors, labor relations directors, personnel directors, and labor negotiators.

    3 out of 5 stars Dry.......2007-02-19

I only bought this book because I'm in labor relations class. It's as dry as a piece of stale bread. But if you want to know anything and everything about Labor Relations and the history, BUY IT!

5 out of 5 stars My first textbook order from Amazon.......2007-01-11

This is the first time I have order a textbook online. My experience was awesome. I received my order in a timely manner. The textbook was in outstanding condition. This text consisted of labor law material along with various labor law cases and procedures. I just order another book I am awaiting for the early arrival of this text.
    THANK YOU AMAZON !!

4 out of 5 stars Fairly good - Not excellent.......2004-11-19

I just took a college level class in which we used this book as the textbook. There is a lot of good information inside which provides a good introduction to the novice on how the process of collective bargaining works. It begins with the history of how it started and continues through the specific issues that collective bargaining entails. There is even a copy of the National Labor Relations Act in the back of the book.

There are some rough spots that should be worked out in the next edition however. Sometimes I found myself lost in the verbage that the author chose to use and had no idea what the point had been. The case studies at the ends of the chapters have no solutions, they ask questions of you and then leave you - a novice - to flounder with no professional direction in the event - which is frequent - that you can't figure out the answer. And, there are some typo's in key locations which end up disproving, instead of proving, the point that the author was attempting to make (very confusing.)

This text is best used in conjunction with lectures by a good professor if you want to get the most out of it.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2002-05-17

Great book for the novice negotiator or student.Current, easy to read, practical examples.

    5 out of 5 stars Concise & complete.......2002-04-11

The authors provide a complete & concise discussion of the process of collective bargaining within a general labor relations context. Many, current cases, tips from experts, and historical references help present the concepts. A solid text for the novice negotiator or interested student.

    Book Description

Studies show that U.S. companies lose approximately $75 billion annually on failed or mismanaged projects. Avoid the many pitfalls and deliver projects on time, within budget, and of the scope and quality desired by the client, with a highly successful tool called the Statement of Work (SOW).

In Delivering Project Excellence with the Statement of Work, author Michael Martin explains what an SOW is ... how it's developed and used on a project to establish a baseline, develop pricing, and measure changes and profitability ... and how to communicate and sell the importance of the SOW to the client and your own organization.

Included with this book is a bonus CD-ROM with sample SOWs, templates, and forms to help you manage change to the project throughout its life cycle. This is a must-have book for every project leader, manager, team member, or client.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Solid Book !.......2004-11-17

Mr. Martin did a magnificent job explaining what an SOW is and when it should be created. He also explains in detail the creation of an SOW and how it applies to the government and private business sectors. If you are familiar with SOW's you can skip Chapters 1-3 and dive into Chapter 4. I strongly recommend Chapter 5-7.

Chapter 1: Defining the Statement of Work
    Historical Perspective on the SOW
Industry Standard Definition of the SOW
Definition of the SOW in the New Economy

Chapter 2: The Importance of the SOW in Managing Projects
    Reasons for Having a SOW
    Benefits of the SOW

Chapter 3: When to Do an SOW
Consequences of Lack of Guidance for the Private Sector
When an SOW Should Be Done
Types of SOW's and When They Apply

Chapter 4: Who Should Develop the SOW
    Building the TIGER Team
    Building the Cone of Cohesion

Chapter 5: Building the SOW foundation
    Performing Due Diligence
    Building the WBS

    Chapter 6: Framing the SOW
    Developing the SOW Framework
Structure of the Baseline SOW framework

    Chapter 7: Finalizing the SOW
    Drafting a Quality SOW
Role of the SOW in Pricing the Project
    Reviewing the SOW
Role of the SOW in the Contract

    Chapter 8: Sample SOW's
(this chapter breaks down the examples included on the CD)

Chapter 9: Managing Change to the SOW
    The importance of Managing Change
    Identifying When a Change Occurs
Factors to Consider in Managing Changes to the Project
Tools for Managing Change to the Project

Chapter 10: Selling the Importance and Benefits of the SOW

I would have preferred a variety of SOWS on the included CD giving examples of different types of projects. The templates that are included on CD were helpful. I was able to immediately use the template for one of my projects. I was very satisfied with my purchase.

almost the same as the newer addition , has all the things you ned to know about labor economics

5 out of 5 stars A very interesting textbook about labor economics.......2002-08-07

I was a teaching assistant in a labor economics undergraduate course in Northwestern University that used this book. I found it very interesting and full of real-world examples and discussions. The mathematical level is simple and therefore the book is accessible also to students with only little background in mathematics or economics. The exposition is clear. About half of the problems and the review questions are solved at the end of the book, making it possible for the reader to practice and test her understanding of the material. I believe that most students can understand most of the material in the book even without taking a formal course in labor economics, and therefore I recommend it to anyone who is interested in the functioning of labor markets.

4 out of 5 stars A helpful and informative book.......1999-05-06

I bought this book to use for my Labor Economics class at Cornell University. My professor, Professor Smith, is a contributor to this book and it was a wonderful supplement to the lectures. The book is filled with useful information and practical applications, so its appeal is not limited to economics students, but anyone who wishes to know more about payroll taxes, policy applications, work incentives and the like. This easy-to-understand book benefited me a lot and I would recommend its use to other courses in labor economics at other colleges and universities.

1 out of 5 stars This book is too wordy, puts you to sleep.......1999-04-04

I bought this book for my economics class at Dartmouth College, but it was a horrible book. The text is wordy, verbose, too long. A lot of times, there are unnecessarily explains simple things too long. I hope all of you will find better labor economics text book.

          Book Description

Loyalty is by no means dead. In fact the principles of loyalty . . . are alive and well at the heart of every company with an enduring record of high productivity, solid profits, and steady expansion.
          From The Loyalty Effect

The business world seems to have given up on loyalty: many major corporations now lose-and have to replace-half their customers in five years, half their employees in four, and half their investors in less than one. Fred Reichheld's national bestseller The Loyalty Effect shows why companies that ignore these skyrocketing defections face a dismal future of low growth, weak profits, and shortened life expectancy. Reichheld demonstrates the power of loyalty-based management as a highly profitable alternative to the economics of perpetual churn. He makes a powerful economic case for loyalty-and takes you through the numbers to prove it. His startling conclusion: Even a small improvement in customer retention can double profits in your company. The Loyalty Effect will change the way you think about loyalty, profits, and the nature of business.

Fred Reichheld is a Director Emeritus of Bain & Company and a Bain Fellow. He is also the author of Loyalty Rules!.

          Download Description

Reichheld lays out a new "economics of loyalty" that provides a framework where the "soft" elements of business--loyalty and learning--can be effectively linked to the hard science of cash flows and cost/benefit analysis. Because of this connection, Reichheld argues, there is enormous potential for improving a company's performance by increasing customer, investor, and employee loyalty. Reichheld's research demonstrates that loyalty drives profits in direct and quantifiable ways through its impact on growth, learning, and productivity. In addition, loyalty generates a spiritual energy that powers the value creation process that is at the heart of sustained business success. In many industries, loyalty explains the differences in profitability among competitors more effectively than scale, market share, unit costs, or most other factors usually associated with competitive advantage.

This book above any other, rekindled my passion to fully understand the concept of 'loyalty'. Although it was written quite some time ago now, having its' genesis back in the 1980's, it remains an outstanding work on this topic.

Clearly, thinking has evolved over time and practical application of this approach has clarified and expanded our understanding of this topic, yet the book presents a strong argument for developing a deep appreciation of loyalty and it's impact on business performance.

The book is well researched. Well written. Easy to read, with a good flow. Full of interesting case studies and supporting data this publication is a must read for anyone interested in the topic.

Much attention is today being focused on Customer Loyalty yet the proposition that this book puts forward is that Customer Loyalty is only one third of the argument. Employee loyalty and shareholder loyalty both play a significant role in delivering benefits back to the corporation. Few books have expounded the proposition as thoroughly and completely as this one.

5 out of 5 stars A way to earn consistently higher profits.......2006-09-02

The Loyalty Effect is an analysis of the effects of loyalty. The author, Frederick F. Reichheld, takes a rigorous looks at a variety of successful companies and finds that those "that earned superior levels of customer loyalty and retention also earned consistently higher profits" and sustainable levels of growth.

The examples and data shown in this book give a clear picture of how loyalty can be earned through strong value creation and why this leads to long-term profitability and growth. Beyond customer loyalty, the author also looks at how the right employees, the right investors and the right partnerships can add to the overall strength of a company. The evidence that Reichheld presents in support of loyalty-based management is thought provoking and compelling.

While the author himself doesn't proclaim this that style of management is a magic "cure all", Reichheld's argument is extremely convincing and the research supporting his claim is clear: loyalty makes good economic sense. People running businesses, big and small, can benefit from the ideas presented in The Loyalty Effect. I highly recommend this book.

4 out of 5 stars Learn how to foster loyalty in customers and within your organization.......2006-02-21

These days it would be easy to believe that loyalty didn't matter anymore. Customers are going to shop around, employees are going to hunt for new jobs before they get downsized, and investors will be fickle about holding onto stock if its price moves even an inch. Loyalty, says a whole cadre of business gurus, is out of date and irrelevant. Not so, says author Frederick Reichheld, a director of Bain & Company. Companies like Leo Burnet and A.G. Edwards consistently pay the highest salaries, offer high value to customers at competitive prices, have the highest employee retention rates, and have the highest profitability rates. Loyal customers, employees and investors fuel a sustained cycle of growth at these companies. If you want to foster loyalty in your customers, employees and investors, Reichheld has the following advice:

          · Make customer value, not profit, the goal.
          · Loyal customers are more profitable than new customers. Break up the potential customer base into segments and find out which ones are more likely to be loyal. Target these customers.
          · Find and keep the right employees. Getting the right customers will bring you a profit. Invest that profit in loyal employees who will continue to increase value to your customers. Companies with the highest employee loyalty consistently have the highest customer loyalty.
          · Find investors with long-term perspective.
          · Learn from defections. If customers or employees are leaving the company, find out why. Take actions to correct problems. Learn from mistakes.

          Book Description

Combining the astute social analysis of Alvin Tofflers The Third Wave and Faith Popcorns The Popcorn Report, this book boldly predicts the death of the conventional job and describes the Brave New World of the self-employed society.Since the dawn of the Industrial Revolution, it has been the organizing principle of society: people are what they do. But at the dawning of the new millennium, Americans are waking up to the fact that commitment to a traditional corporate structure does not guarantee personal validation or financial security. In what is one of the fastest growing movements today, people are rejecting the idea of corporate loyalty to explore more creative ways of making a living. This book addresses this movement and is a must-have for the millions investigating free agency.

The Organization Man is history. Taking his place is America's new economic icon: the "free agent"--the job-hopping, tech-savvy, fulfillment-seeking, self-reliant, independent worker. Already 30 million strong, these new "dis-organization" men and women are transforming America in ways both profound and exhilarating. Are you ready for . . . · The Peter-Out Principle: Successor to the famous "Peter Principle," this new rule decrees that when the fun peters out, the talented walk out. · Unschooling: Individual-centered learning like homeschooling and apprenticeships will threaten Ivy League colleges and end high school as we know it. · Individual Public Offerings: The upper echelon of free agents will issue these new "IPOs," or stock . . . in themselves.· E-tirement: When Americans reach age sixty-five, more will enter a new stage of life. Working as full-time, part-time, and anytime free agents, they'll be finding and executing work over the Internet.· Just-in-time Politics: This political version of just-in-time manufacturing will challenge the present two-party system.· The Feminine Century: Women are free agency's early adopters. Many analysts estimate that by the year 2005, half of all businesses will be run by women. In this landmark book, Daniel H. Pink offers the definitive account of this revolution in work. He shows who these free agents are--from the marketing consultant down the street to the home-based "mompreneur" to the footloose technology contractor--and why they've forged a new path. His entertaining and provocative account of the new frontier of work reveals how free agents are shaking up all of our institutions--from politics to education to the family.

5 out of 5 stars The Optimistic Jew.......2007-08-31

By varying accounts there are 25-30 million free agents at present in the United States. Most of these work from home. Add millions of micro-businesses and one comes to the conclusion that the 20th century will be known as the first and last century in which most working people were salaried. Up until the 20th century most working people were small farmers, merchants and independent professionals. If present trends continue - and there is every reason to believe they will - then by the middle of the 21st century most working people will be self-employed in one form or another. This will have revolutionary impact on politics, tax and social policy and the economic balance of power. Cultural attitudes that encourage innovation and risk-taking will have tremendous advantages in this emerging reality. This is why I claim that: "No people on earth (referring to the Jews) are better prepared by virtue of education, temperament and historical adaptability to embrace the challenges of the 21st century". This book provided me with much of the information that enabled me to open my own book "The Optimistic Jew" with the above lines.

          4 out of 5 stars SOCIAL COMMENTARY DISGUISED AS A HOW-TO GUIDE.......2007-04-25

Free Agent Nation by Daniel H. Pink is not entirely what it seems.

Daniel Pink is a former speech writer for Al Gore. He wrote for him when Al Gore was serving as Vice President, but not during the campaign for president.

When Mr Pink left the White House and became, as it were, a Free Agent, he was surprised at the number of people who earned income from running their own small business. It became apparent to him that if the Republican Party was the party of big business and the Democratic Party was the party of labor unions, then the growing demographic of the self employed had no real representation.

Therefore, Mr Pink explored who these people were, what they were doing, and what they needed. Of course, Mr. Pink is no economist or statistician. Therefore, his analysis seems a bit heavy on the anecdotal. Likewise, this is not a how to book that will tell you step by step what needs to be done to start up your own business.

Regardless, this is an interesting book that explores a growing social phenomenon of the post-industrial world.

5 out of 5 stars Motivation to Get Out There.......2006-11-05

If you've been thinking of going out on your own, Daniel Pink will motivate you. Without writing a motivational book at all, he has succeeded in showing the reader why being a Free Agent is the way to go in the new economy of the 21st Century.

4 out of 5 stars Salarymen can learn something too.......2006-10-24

In 2006 we are way past the industrial age, and especially so in the TV and entertainment business. Our products are at the forefront -- but what about our ways of working? This book mostly addresses how people work as independents, but has a lot one can learn for how the local and multi-national work environment could be configured better. It's a bit U.S.-centric, but other countries, especially in hi-tech, are not far behind.
