An Industrial Engineer.......2000-04-21
The Memory Jogger is the ideal handbook for improving job-related procedures, systems, quality, and costs on a daily basis. It conveniently presents the tools in two categories: problem identification tools, and problem analysis tools. It also offers a technnique selection guide according to task. Each tools is presented along with three examples: manufacturing, service/administration, and daily-life situations. It is a very, very useful quick reference guide.
However, the upgraded version, "The Memory Jogger II", has been available for quite some time now, and would be a wiser choice.

I am process of getting my Black Belt certification through Air Academy Associates. I like the common sense approach to Basic Statistics.
Excellent Start for Getting the Basics of Continuous Improvement.......2006-08-30
Looking for a solid introduction to continuous improvement? This may be a better book to guide your effort than many introductory books. This book includes basic introduction to Design of Experiment, where most efforts and books would ignore in continuous improvement.
The best book to complement Six Sigma analysis.......2003-04-24
As a certified Black Belt, I have to perform statistical tests on diverse processes for both manufacturing and service industries.
I have found this book to be the best I know of to be my "desktop guide" when I have any doubt on the method or applicability of a test or tool.
I engourage any and all readers who are looking for a book to help them do Process Improvement or Six Sigma Process Improvement to get this book.
It is well worth the price.
Two thumbs up!!.......2002-12-11
This book is really great, I reccommend it!

Product Description
This Practical Guidebook is designed as a quick and easy-to-use reference to support your process-improvement activities. Read it when you or your team are working on an effort that is: stalled; unstructured; taking too long; in need of new ideas; or has failed in the past. In Continuous Improvement Tools Volume 1, seven popular planning, analysis, and interpretation tools were discusssed. Now in Volume 2, the authors continue the process by introducing eight additional tools (Tree Diagram, Pareto Chart, Sequence Flow Chart, Process Flow Chart, Scatter Diagram, Run Chart, Control Chart, and Histogram) that are used during the various stages of a quality-improvement effort. Volume 2 also features a highly understandable reading format that combines practical examples with concise explanations. Plus, forms and checklists at the end of each chapter help to answer the question: "Which tool should I use and why should I use it?" Everyone from frontline employees to executives will find the book's content accessible, practical, and full of ideas that can be applied immediately!
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful and portable idea book and reference.......2001-05-03
This slender little book is a handy desk guide that covers some important continuous process improvement tools. It gives a quick "how to" for the following tools that are the foundation of CPI: Tree, Pareto, Sequence Flow, Process Flow, Scatter, Run, Control and Histogram.
Granted, the run and control charts would merit a book unto themselves, but that misses the point of this book - it's a handy reference and idea book that takes up little briefcase space for consultants or desk space for anyone who is involved in CPI or measurement and analysis of any kind. I take mine with me when I am working on projects at client sites, and have found it invaluable when I am developing processes and procedures because it gives me ideas when I am writing the measurement sections of those documents.
I give it five stars for clear descriptions packed into a slim book and its thorough coverage of some of the most important tools available to a CPI practitioner or consultant.

Book Description
This book, written by the author of the award-winning best-seller "Lean Manufacturing for the Small Shop," describes six sigma, what it is, and how it is used in smaller companies. While it concentrates on six sigma in the small shop environment, it shows the relationship between continuous improvement, lean, and quality. This book focuses on implementation for operators and team leaders, as well as managers and job shop owners. It explains how continuous improvement tools support each other and can accomplish what one or two tools (on their own) cannot. A special hands-on CD-ROM is included with this book, which can help make the DMAIC (Define, Measure and Analyze, Improve, Control) process easier for obtaining six-sigma quality.
Customer Reviews:
Six Sigma for the Small Shop is a winner.......2002-10-03
Gary Conner has the knack of making both complicated concepts and potentially dull reading so simple that this book is required reading for anyone seriously contemplating or implementing any of the continuous improvement tools available to us. His exposition of DMAIC (design, measure, analyze, improve and control) into specific tools with copious charts is worth the price of the book alone. Not only is there an index but a glossary and a list of suggested reading.
Of particular value is the presentation of tables about each of the many initiatives that show that it's relationship to Six Sigma, as well as who needs or uses it, cost estimates, strengths, limitations, process complexity, implementation time, additional resources and internet search key words and URLs.
Aside:
I have two quibbles:
1. The title may scare away larger shop folk who can gain as much value from this book as the small shop people
2. I would have liked to see more linkage to the engineering design function. Manufacturing and industrial engineering are important, but most of product cost and defect generation happens up front in the design.
Having voiced my quibbles, this book sits on my desk along with Gary's "lean manufacturing for the small shop" and I can now recommend a second book by this down to earth lean author.
Chairperson - Industrial, Manufacturing & Plasitcs/Composite.......2002-10-02
This book is an outstanding contribution to the Six Sigma effort, which allows the small shops to discover how all the elements of past and present improvement
processes fit together. Beginning with the history of the Industrial Revolution through the use of the six sigma practical tools, it explains the needs and how the tools dovetail nicely together.
Within this book's covers lay the applied use of six-sigma process improvement techniques, which reduce costs and give the practitioner, better understanding of processes and flow. By following the step-by-step process of define, measure, analyze, improve and control, hands-on problem solving is easily taught to everyone within an organization. The four appendixes plus the glossary completes a great reference book for any small and medium shop.
Being a past plant manager in small shops I see the high value of this book. The interactive CD makes the user a quick master in six sigma techniques. My plans are to use this as a text for my Six Sigma course at Sinclair Community College.
Thank you for this review opportunity.

Customer Reviews:
A gem!.......2002-07-03
This is, without a doubt, one of the most useful and best written guides about problem solving and continuous tools you can buy, and here are some reasons why:
- It's formatted as a mini encyclopedia that covers seven categories of tools: (1) requirements and problem definition, (2) data gathering, (3) analysis, (4) ideas and options, (5) decision making, (6) planning, and (7) continuous improvement.
- Each tool is presented in a fixed format that includes What it Is, How to Use It, and Example.
- The layout and design makes finding information effortless and is highly visual.
You get 35 tools, ranging from the more common ones such as Pareto charts, SWOT analysis, cause and effect diagrams, to lesser know ones such as perception of performance grids and mind mapping. In addition, some of the tools are complex, such as customer-supplier agreements, time-cost and cost-benefit analyses, and team purpose analysis. I especially like the paired comparison technique and the complete treatment of planning tools, which includes work breakdown structures, critical path method, and planning tables. Another nice touch is the tool selection chart on page 12. This is one of the reasons that this short book is such a handy reference and easy to use. If you're interested in this book because you're getting involved in a continuous process improvement initiative I recommand that you also read "Continuous Process Improvement: Simplifying Work Flow Systems" by George D. Robson.
