5 out of 5 stars Manage Energy - great insight........2007-08-23

We need to manage our energy to perform the most important things. We often take our energy for granted and are not aware of our ebbs and flows.
We need to do the most important things when we have the most energy. We need to eat and sleep to have more energy. It originally comes from a sports performance model, but has been adapted for executives. It is also important as we grow older. Truely a new insight for me that unified a few things I ahve been learning.

3 out of 5 stars Push Past Your Limit To Grow.......2007-06-04

I felt this book's main premise was a useful idea, but nothing novel. Expanding past one's limit, followed by a rest period resulting in growth whether physical or psychological. I liked the informational nature of the book, however, I didn't care much for the examples of actual people written about in it. I understand it is used to help prove the points, but it appeared to be fluff to me and I would have liked more information to drill the point home and more sources to back up the info.

Those opinions aside, it is worthwhile, to the point and contains enough information to satisfy reading it once, but I don't expect to re-read it.

5 out of 5 stars Not a silly self-help book.......2007-05-17

At first look, the subtitle "Managing Energy, Not Time" smells of another 'just do this and your life will be great' self-help book. However, this book avoids most of the simplistic approaches other books take. Outlined is excellent, yet straightforward guidance on how to bring into balance a work life that is out of control or at least a bit out of whack. The simple advice given (which regretfully requires some basic self discipline - I prefer to avoid self discipline) is both helpful and if followed, effective. The book is relatively careful not to imply that applying its principles or introducing self discipline is easy. It is, however, unapologetic when suggesting that making a set of changes in how one manages one's life will make a difference. The book also lays out a very helpful distinction between one's energy and one's time - and it is a very helpful distinction - describing a truth that I had not before carefully considered. The book includes numerous case studies of actual people with which the authors have worked. I think you will be able to identify with a number of these case studies. If you feel overwhelmed, exhausted, and/or lack balance in how your work life, home life, and downtime function, take a look at this book.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2007-03-21

Nothing new here. Eat right, get plenty of sleep and drink your water and you too can have more energy. I have to agree with other reviewers that state that this book is poorly written. Instead of providing a method for creating your own energy plan, the authors give simple hazy case examples.

5 out of 5 stars WOW! Awakened to New Way of Looking At Work.......2007-03-06

This book really helped me to discover how to manage my energy and not my time. It gave me skill sets to use for daily life processes.

I have recommended to over 50 people since reading the book and everyone has loved it. Great Book!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book!!!.......2007-05-17

I highly recommend this book. I took a college course and we used this book. It is a very balanced book and looks into all areas of Eustress (good stress), Neustress (neutral stress) and distress (bad stress). It gives a plethora of step by step information on many different techniques into managing and eliminating stress. It was so helpful to me, I decided to keep the book once my class was over. There is also an excellent accompanying journal called Managing Stress "A Creative Journal" you can buy to go with it.

Book Description

Got Parts? was written by a survivor of DID in association with her therapist and therapy group. This book is filled with successful coping techniques and strategies to enhance the day-to-day functioning of adult survivors of DID in relationships, work, parenting, self-confidence, and self-care. Got Parts will help you introduce yourself to your internal family and improve its communication, integration, and well-being. Although written to carefully avoid triggering, it delivers well-grounded guidelines for living that DID people need to do on the way to recovery. Coping strategies included help you with issues related to triggers, flashbacks, and body memories. Got Parts also includes a detailed list of outside resources you can draw on. This book is intended to be used in conjunction with a therapist and is not a substitute for therapy.

Once thought of as a rare and mysterious psychiatric curiosity, Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) is now understood to be a fairly common outcome of severe trauma in young children—most typically extreme and repeated physical, sexual, and/or emotional abuse, and often lack of attachment. Formerly called Multiple Personality Disorder, DID is a condition in which a person has two or more distinct identities or personality states that recurrently take control of the person's consciousness and behavior. Symptoms can include depression, mood swings, panic or anxiety attacks, substance abuse, memory loss, propensity for trances, sleep and eating disorders, distrust, detachment, lack of self-care, and distress or impairment at work.

3 out of 5 stars Book Review: Got Parts?.......2007-07-28

Got Parts? An Insider's Guide to Managing Life Successfully with Dissociative Identity Disorder, is a practical guide for those with Dissociative Identity Disorder, previously called Multiple Personality Disorder.

The book covers everything from what Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) is to how to find a good counselor to how to deal with life issues. I felt the book was complete except in the area of discussing the distinct, important spiritual aspects of DID. Like several earlier books, Got Parts? highlighted the importance of spiritual healing in DID. But also like several earlier books, Got Parts? limited spiritual healing to Christian ethics, which, since abusive people can choose to use any kind of ritual to abuse, can reinitiate abuse in the recovering DID individual.

A much more complete book is "The Dissociative Identity Disorder Sourcebook", published in 2001 by Conbtemporary Books and written by Deborah Bray Haddock. Ms. Haddock also discusses the importance of spiritual damage and the need for spiritual healing, but she emphasizes the need for nonjudgemental, overall spirituality rather than any one religious philosophy.

5 out of 5 stars Helpful and clear for all........2007-05-13

This is a very clearly written book for the person with DID and for those who need a refresher or are new to DID. It is specific, positive, and affirming of the process and the need for therapy and support. I highly recommend it for therapists new to DID, and their DID clients.

1 out of 5 stars Worst DID book I've read.......2007-04-25

I rarely write reviews, but after discussing this book with others who have and haven't read it, I felt the need to write and warn those with DID about it.

The tone in which it is written is very authoratative which can be quite difficult to handle for anyone who has survived trauma at the hands of authority figures. The terms "have to" and "need to" are used repeatedly. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad the author was able to heal in the way she explains in this book, but it comes across as if she's saying it's the "only" way to go through the healing journey.

There are many parts that are difficult to handle in this book. One section that really got to me is when she's discussing what she sees as a need for alters to be aware of and know who's fronting all the time. Then she says they also "need to know and be able to identify who they are" if your therapist asks. She reiterates this saying the part who is out has to "be willing to answer the question 'Who's here?' or 'Who am I talking with?' " The final straw for me on this subject was when she said that answering "I don't know" or "nobody" are not acceptable and "shyness, game-playing, or simply 'being confused' are not going to help you-all...." Face it, there are times when alters who are untrusting need to be able to come "out" during therapy in order to learn to trust and not be so shy. It may take months before they're able to say their names, if they ever do. Some experts in the field question the need names at all and don't push those alters who don't have names to choose names.

I think that this type of book, where people who have recovered from DID explain their process of healing, are needed, but this one isn't it. There are a few good suggestions in the book, but if you edited out all the negatives, it would be a very short article. Don't waste your time on this like I did. Please, if you have DID, reconsider the purchase of this book.

5 out of 5 stars Really Love This Book!!.......2006-04-07

Don't let the size fool you. If you have been diagnosed with DID, then this little book of 109 pages is what you need. It doesn't go into the hows and whys of DID, the DID Source Book is great for that. What "Got Parts?" gives you is a day to day manual for getting through life with DID. I carry it in my backpack where ever I go. There are times that DID just gets me down, so I pick up the book, thumb easily to the section I want, take a minute to read about what I need to do, then I remember and do it. Another great thing about this book is that it is written by someone who has DID, who lives and fights in the trenches of DID. This brings authenticity to the book. It also has an index and is easy to locate the subject you are looking for. The writing style of the author is very easy going and she doesn't ever break into stories of her past. There is a page, however in the very back entitled, "About the Author" who remains unidentified. Even then she never talks about the details of her abuse. It's just plain good advice from someone who knows. I have several DID books, but this one is my favorite when I just need to get through the day. When I have moments of feeling crazy, I open the book. When I feel overwhelmed with emotion, I open this book. It helps me to clear my thinking and gives me immediate direction. In short, I really love this book.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Low on substance.......2007-08-19

The reviews for this book are so overwhelmingly positive, I figured it *must* be good. Bad assumption! I gleaned very little usable information from this book. The author uses far too much space defining terms, relating her own experiences, and trying to be cute.

Even worse, as another reviewer noted, the author's tone is a bit condescending. Despite her purported years of experience as a professional organizer, she doesn't seem to have a good handle on what causes people to develop clutter problems. Her extensive use of coined words is annoying. The material is poorly organized, jumping around at times. Also, the writing drags in places; it could have used a more thorough editing. Overall, the writing and material presented is of low quality.

For example, in a chapter on how to clear out sentimental clutter, the author's advice can be distilled into one largely unhelpful sentence, "Save only objects that evoke pleasant or poignant feelings; don't keep anything that makes you feel stressed or upset." Okay, that makes sense, but is that really going to do me any good? I could have used suggestions on how to mentally unhook objects from memories. Then the author goes on to introduce terms such as "clutterabilia" and "memorabiliac." (And she's just getting started! Watch out for "paperosis" and "redundabundance.") Is having a coined word going to solve anything?

In dealing with the fear of getting rid of something and then regretting it, the author admonishes, "If you do find yourself grieving over the loss of something that was never alive to begin with, you need more help than I can give you, and I urge you to seek counseling." At this point, I think she has dismissed most of her readers. She continues without compassion, "Your regrets are...a poor excuse for you to keep hanging onto clutter." Tough love?

Some people might find the author's tone helpful, but I was totally put off by it. I would recommend a thorough perusal of the excerpt available online before investing in this book. It should have been a giveaway to me that so many copies are available used. Maybe the sellers took the author's suggestion to only hold onto things that are useful.

5 out of 5 stars Letting go is hard to do...........2003-08-19

Conquer your clutter. Stop being a slave to your stuff. Understand why it's so hard to get rid of things.

What would your life be like if you could accomplish these three things? How much happier would you be? How much more peaceful would your life be?

Author Harriet Schechter gives you a step-by-step solution in her book, Let Go of Clutter.

In the first chapter, Why Letting Go is So Hard to Do, Schechter explains why we may be biologically programmed to accumulate, why the fear of regret keeps us from discarding stuff, and how society encourages us to gather more and more.

Chapter 4, Purging Paper and Preventing Piles, is another favorite chapter. The author walks us through the method she uses with her clients to quickly sort and purge paper piles. She recommends a File Index, and shows you how to set it up for your household.

The last part of the book looks to the future and explains how to keep your home clean once you've decluttered it.

This book is filled with lots of fill-in-the-blank forms and step-by-step pathways to take you from clutter-filled to clutter-free.

If your clutter is taking over and you've reached the end of your rope with no idea where to start, check out Let Go of Clutter.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK!.......2003-04-27

Got a kid, then you understand the true meaning of the word pandemonium. I bought it for the wife hoping we could figure out how to clean up after "the kid" our 3 y/o son, and organize her accumilated junk(wife's a pack rat). Needless to say, she nor i read it through to the end, but the bit i read was an interesting approach. I still trip over tonka trucks & lego blocks, the insects need a treadmill and the newspaper pile is now a permanent corner structure. Maybe one day I'll finish the book....its a step in the right direction. Buy it.

Book Description

Caffeine. Candy. Sex. Shopping. Smoking. Whether we realize it or not, all of us have strategies for self-medicating ourselves when we feel threatened or overwhelmed by tension or tiredness. But why does one person respond to pressure by going for a five-mile run, while another indulges in a five-hour drinking marathon? Why do some of us crave companionship, while others just want to be alone? And what really helps most to reduce tension and increase energy, a brisk ten-minute walk, twenty minutes of meditation, or two hours of watching TV? In this fascinating new book, nationally known psychologist Robert E. Thayer serves as an expert guide through the latest research into moods and mood management, offering proven techniques for putting today's most important breakthroughs to work in our day-to-day lives. Thayer, whose own work on the biopsychology of moods has been widely discussed in the leading scientific journals--as well as in the pages of Reader's Digest, Prevention, USA Today, McCall's, Good Housekeeping, Men's Health, Redbook, and hundreds of other magazines and newspapers, and on the popular radio show "The Osgood File"--evaluates the hard scientific evidence as he reveals which behaviors energize and empower us, and which sabotage our best interests. (Just five or ten minutes of walking, for example, can enhance mood for an hour or more, while sugar snacking, Thayer shows, causes more tension than it reduces.) Thayer argues that when we learn to see moods as vital barometers of our whole psychology and physiology, rather than mysterious, purely emotional reactions to events around us, we not only understand ourselves better, we have the opportunity to substantially improve our personal effectiveness, both mentally and physically. Thayer offers compelling evidence that our moods--particularly feelings of energy and tension--are closely tied to the rhythms of our evolutionary past. They are directly affected by our health, the food we eat, the amount of sleep we get, exercise (or lack of it), and the time of day. We learn why problems seem more serious late at night, and why a simple disagreement with a co-worker or spouse is more apt to turn into an emotional flare-up at certain times of day. We investigate key differences in the most common ways men and women deal with bad moods, and probe the implications of these findings on our understanding of alcoholism and depression. Far from a shallow quick-fix book, Everyday Moods: Energy and Tension is an in-depth exploration of the origins and influences of moods that affect us every day of our lives. It brings readers to a new understanding of the underlying biology of their daily cycles of energy and tension, and offers powerful recommendations for breaking self-destructive habits and leading a richer, more enjoyable life.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent book for both laypersons and scholars........1999-10-02

This book is written by one of the foremost experts in the area of the study and theory of moods. Dr. Thayer's pioneering research in this area extends over a period of two decades. The book itself offers a scientific understanding of mood and arousal. It is rich in ideas as well as practical approaches to mood self regulation. In particular it presents a sophisicated but understandable theory of moods. The practical side of the book and one that appeals most to the average individual involves a framework, based on empirical research, on how to manage one's moods in order increase personal energy and calmness. This book contains very useful activities to assist in mood self regulation and self understanding.

5 out of 5 stars Great read on a fascinating subject: moods.......1998-10-20

I just couldn`t stop reading once I got started. Thayer`s concept of how and why moods occur is not only easy to understand but also absolutely plausible. So much so that I've tried out a few things and found they work. It doesn`t mean that I go on 5-minute brisk walks every time I feel low, but since now I know (most of the times) where that feeling comes from it seems a lot less disturbing.

5 out of 5 stars Learn the two things that affect EVERYONE's feelings..........1998-10-14

Robert Thayer's book has enlightened me to the one area I have never understood, good and bad feelings. He explains how two things, Tension, and Energy, result in you're being upset, happy, content, crabby, and depressed. Read how you can change your moods by having an awareness of how high tension and low energy levels affect you. One of the best books I've every read that has changed my life for all time!

1 out of 5 stars Is this something new?.......1998-09-05

Okay. Exercise, get enough sleep and eat properly. This book took too many pages to tell us the same old thing!

5 out of 5 stars A successful approach to understanding an altering moods........1998-09-01

This book offers a comprehensive review of various antecedents of everyday moods and provides useful information to modify the effects of negative mood states. Reading this book has helped me to understand the relationship between my behavior and my moods, and has given me the knowledge to improve the quality of my relationships with others.

The idea of stress contributing to poor health is an old one, but often patients are simply told to "relax"--and it's even rarer that researchers take the time to carefully study how relaxation can improve physical conditions. Tackling both these issues, Dr. Richard Surwit combines specific relaxation techniques with a solid research background in an effort to help control blood sugar levels. The first few chapters are rather technical but are explained in an approachable manner. He identifies several chemicals such as cortisol and growth hormone that are related to blood sugar management and discusses how depression, hostility, and anxiety can affect these chemicals. He refers to specific research, both with mice and with humans, and includes simple tests to help you analyze these problems and develop a combination of techniques to combat them. Later chapters explain these techniques in detail, particularly progressive relaxation therapy (similar to biofeedback, but without the machine) and cognitive behavior therapy. Each routine is broken down into simple daily steps, and pages can be used as workbook sheets --much of the daily effort involved is simply tracking your progress. While nowhere does Dr. Surwit suggest these as a total replacement for diet control and insulin treatments, the specific steps aren't difficult to add to your daily routine and may make just the difference you've been hoping for. --Jill Lightner

Book Description

Diabetes is quickly becoming one of the world’s most serious health epidemics, and researchers are continually searching for new ways to manage the condition beyond the traditional realms of diet, exercise, and medication. Now, Dr. Richard S. Surwit, a leader in the field of the psychology of diabetes, adds the vital fourth component to treating diabetes: a revolutionary mind-body program that lowers blood sugar levels and dramatically reduces diabetes’ serious and damaging side effects.

In The Mind-Body Diabetes Revolution, Dr. Surwit reveals how stress, depression, and anger affect blood sugar levels and offers a step-by-step six-week program—based on twenty years of study—to help the millions of people with diabetes effectively manage their condition. He clearly explains how our moods and emotions can translate into chronic anger, anxiety, and depression—all of which increase blood sugar levels. He provides compelling case studies and a powerfully effective six-week program designed to teach patients how to manage emotions and stress, as well as self-tests and reflective quizzes to help patients determine the best and easiest psychological techniques to help keep blood sugar levels down. By bringing the powers of mind and body together, this is a powerful—and unprecedented—tool for effective diabetes control.

After reading this book, I got a small book to keep track of my moods and my blood sugar, then started developing ways to avoid stress and strong emotions (the bad ones, that is). It is a cure-all, but it does help, which is all I can ask of any program. It has also put me in a much better mood. You don't have to be a diabetic to appreciate this book.

I finished this book in just about 2 hours. i skipped a large portion of it becuase it didn't apply to me. A large portion of this book focuses on career-based stress. I'm disabled, and therefore unemployed, so the career-based info just didn't fit me more. There was some helpful information i will hang onto, but overall, it just wasn't for me.

This is a great book for ideas on how to get back control of your life. If you have a extremely stressful career like I do you'll love reading the different ideas in this book. Chapter 6 covers ways to fight burnout, figuring out when you're most productive & how to deal with work overload. Chapter 16 covers mastering your environment which has lots of ideas on how to deal challenges at home & work plus ideas on how to recharge your energy. This is a great book & well worth the money!

Although I would have liked to have seen more on the topic of burnout and maybe something on the stress of raising an unruly teenager there was a lot in here on stress that I hadn't considered before. There were also some approaches to managing stress that were new to me, and of course that's always appreciated. The little boxes on every page like what a concept, etched in stone, and warning were kind clever

5 out of 5 stars The Mind is the Matter.......2007-03-21

People don't wake up one day and decide to be angry ... the seeds begin as thought clusters early in life ... as young as 3 or 4 years of age. The only way out of the beast that can devour you is reprogramming the negative thinking that fuels it. This is cognitive reconstruction and this book is brilliant with lots of excercises and suggestions. Change your mind change your life.

Other great anger tools: The Hoffman Process and The Sedona Method. Healing anger is a complex web of thought, emotion, and physical release in a constructive outlet.

5 out of 5 stars A Guide to Living Life as an Adult.......2000-08-06

Looking for help in managing my anger I found this book in the Library and found it to be so useful that I wanted to keep it permanently. Has lessons and techniques in recognizing and controlling anger, but, more importantly terrific insights in how we view and interact with others and how to live with life's reality not our childlike wishes. A very practical and insightful book that is helping me, at age 57, to grow up.
