1 out of 5 stars Total rubbish...........2007-02-16

This book is the worst e-learning/Flash book i have ever bought. I was shocked by the seriously poor quality of the tutorial examples, it really does look like the authors of this book just do not care. How can an e-learning book from an e-learning company produce such crap, i work in a new media design studio and would never release such poor quality that is found page after page in this book. There is very little actionscript used in this book that is of any real help, again how can you create a great e-learning applications by avoiding the use of actionscript?

The actuall quality of the book itself is shocking, i found so many words missing, wrong sections highlighted (these were meant to give focus to a specific area of text). The book is so disorganised its amazing. From my experience i would stay well away from this book and and from Rapid Intake (the authoring company). What a complete waste of time and money.

Do not buy this book. This book doesn't help it confuses and misleads you. I am amazed how is that they allow this book to be in here and how expensive it is for its content. I was really expecting more...or at least a book one could easily follow.

4 out of 5 stars Great Intro to CourseBuilder and Customizing it too!.......2005-08-26

As an intermediate web developer trying to learn to create some interactive, web based elearning I needed a resource to walk me through from the very beginning. Using DreamweaverMX with CourseBuilder and Learning site is just what the doctor ordered. This book walks you through everything from downloading and installing CourseBuilder to exploring the different types of interactions available and then trying them for yourself. It includes a ton of sample files that allow you to checkout the finished interaction and then go through and build it yourself. This is great in case you get stuck or something doesn't work right because it gives you a reference point to do troubleshooting on your own work.

You'll probably breeze through the first half of the book getting familiar with the basics and then spend a lot of time in Chapters 11-16 in figuring out how to customize the different interactions. Throughout the book the authors give a lot of helpful hints and FYIs which is always nice.

The last part of the book is dedicated to using Macromedia's Learning Site extension. This is a great walk through step by step putting together the interactive pages you just created in CourseBuilder to make a complete course. There is also information on tracking student scores if you're not currently using an LMS which is handy knowledge.

If you want to be able to create learning interactions without requiring plug-ins or purchasing other expensive applications to do it for you, this a great resource to get you going.

4 out of 5 stars I recommended that it be used for a VB.NET course.......2005-02-20

For years, I have taught a course in Visual Basic version 6 in the community education department of the local community college. With the movement to VB.NET, it is time to make the change. After examining this book, I have recommended that we use it for the updated course. The first seven chapters contain all of the standard examples of using the GUI objects and the constructs such as if - then -else and loops. It introduces the object-oriented features as early as possible. For example, try-catch blocks for exceptions are incorporated into the examples as early as page 88. There is no chapter devoted to object-oriented concepts in VB.NET; they are scattered throughout, introduced when appropriate.
Chapter eight covers processing databases and an introduction to ADO.NET and chapter nine is an introduction to XML and how it is used in VB. In chapter eleven, the collection objects such as hashtables and sortedlists are examined. Chapter twelve demonstrates how to use VB.NET to create web applications. At the end of each chapter, a large project is completely presented with a list of each of the GUI objects and the assignments to the properties as well as complete listings of the code for each module. Exercises are interspersed inside the chapters and solutions to some of them are included at the end. Sets of multiple-choice and programming problems are also at the end of each chapter.
VB.NET is quite different from VB 6, but is not all that hard to learn. However, if you are experienced in VB 6 and trying to learn VB.NET, then the worst approach is to suddenly be bombarded by a list of all the differences. The best way to learn VB.NET is to have the differences incorporated into your learning one idea at a time. It is that approach that sold me on this book.

This is a new, thoroughly revised edition of the acclaimed Using French. It provides guidance for those who have already acquired the basics of French and wish to extend their knowledge of the language. Unlike conventional grammars, it gives special attention to those areas of the vocabulary and grammatical usage of contemporary French that cause most difficulty to English-speakers, and incorporates the concept of register differences throughout. Clearly laid out and easy to consult, it will prove invaluable to all who wish to improve their fluency and confidence in French.

3 out of 5 stars Room for massive improvement.......2007-09-21

This book gives an overview of French grammar and features some very helpful sections. The best one by far is the one on prepositions, it's very detailed and provides and in-depth guide to how and when you should use which French preposition for which English proposition.

The main drawback is the section on infinitives. If you know French, you'll know that the French infinitive may be preceeded by 'de' (C'est important de manger), by 'à' (J'ai commencé à manger) by no preposition at all (je veux manger) or occasionally by other prepositions (On a fini la soirée par manger). While this guide does feature lengthy lists of which verb takes which preposition, the authors had a complete blackout and neglected to provide the English translation for a single one of all these verbs! In other words, you won't be able to use unless you're already fluent in French. The corresponding guide to contemporary Italian usage, in the same series, is almost identical to this one but does feature an English translation for each Italian verb and expression.

I cannot explain why or how the translations were dropped from this book but the consequences for the learners are obvious. A much less useful book than if they had been provided.

3 out of 5 stars Good but not excellent.......2006-03-08

This book offers a very good overview of French usage in Europe... The problem here for me is that French is also spoken in other non-European countries and this book does not contain enough explanations on the main varieties of this language in other parts of the world (What about Québec??). It is meant mainly for people learning Parisian French. Other books in this same series (Using Spanish, Using Portuguese, Using German and even Using Italian) care to highlight the main regional differences (Iberian, Mexican, Argentinian Spanish, Brazilian, African and European Portuguese, northern and southern dialects of German and Italian, etc.) you might find in the areas where the corresponding languages are spoken. This one doesn't.

4 out of 5 stars Main Idea of The Book: Intimacy determines the language!.......2000-09-22

This is a book that you can find a lot of explanations of French language which is classified into 3 main groups: R1, R2 & R3. The book explains that R1: very informal usage, R2: polite, but normal and R3:very formal(such as when you talk with the "big boss")...So by this classification you learn how to say sth. in an appropriate way depending on your situation. It is very useful, if you are thinking of living in France.

              Book Description

This book contains all the information that is necessary to begin creating software demonstrations. Using Dreamweaver timelines you can create software demonstrations that are as smooth as those created by third-party products. These demonstrations will boast a smaller file size and not require a plugin to run.

Learn to create native HTML software demonstrations that:
              - Show the mouse moving to correct locations
              -Highlight mouse clicks
              - Show text typing
              - Add annotations and captions
              - Integrate synchronized Flash-based audio for voiceovers and sound effects

If you are creating courseware that teaches software skills, you will want to include software demonstrations in your course. Showing the learner how to perform a task is an important instructional design principle.

In this book you will learn to create software demonstrations that don't require a plugin. The step-by-step instructions contained in this book will teach you everything you need to know. You will learn to take appropriate screen captures and put those captures together using layers and timelines to build a software demonstration. Once you have completed the exercises provided in the book, you will have created your first software demonstration.

This book also covers several techniques for enhancing your software demo by adding annotations, highlighting mouse clicks, adding sound effects and including voice over narration.

              Companion CD
The companion CD-ROM contains all of the files you need to create your first software demonstration. You will use these files as you work through the exercises. Some sample demonstrations are also included on the CD-ROM.
