Book Description
A sought-after packager of high school students shares highly coveted strategies to help parents get their kids into the country's most competitive colleges
Did you know? A child's guidance counselor can help reverse a deferral. A parent can help get a child off a waiting list. And there is a way for students to back out of Early Decision once they've been accepted.
Based on the controversial insider information Elizabeth Wissner-Gross has gleaned from working for years as a successful packager of high school students and from interviews with heads of admission at some of the nation's most competitive colleges, this book helps parents answer questions such as: Can an application be sabotaged by a competing student or parent? How do colleges really know if a student applies to two or more schools for Early Decision? Is it possible to prescreen a teacher's recommendation? As well as the biggest question of all: Of the tens of thousands of highly qualified students that graduate each year, why should a college choose yours?
Targeting the college-educated parents of today's college-bound teenagers who seek to gain a proven edge in the highly secretive and seemingly arbitrary college admissions process, What Colleges Don't Tell You (and Other Parents Don't Want You to Know) reveals 272 little- known, unconventional, tried-and-true secrets to help parents get their children into the most competitive schools of their dreams.

Indispensable Consumer-Oriented Reference.......2007-09-15
Having recently gone through the college admissions process with two children, we've looked at most of the books in this category. What sets this book apart from the others is the fact that the author is unquestionably on the side of you, the consumer. Ms. Wisner-Gross lends transparency to the business of college admissions, and offers many suggestions reflecting her ability to think outside of the box. This book was extremely helpful to us, and a clear favorite.
Getting Your Child Into a Top School.......2007-09-02
The presentation emphasizes the importance of monitoring grades from the
9th grade onward because this provides a good predictor of future performance. In addition, parents should track grading rubrics. Student
practice is important to solidify knowledge of the technical subject areas. i.e. math, science and foreign language
Sometimes, group study can make tedious work more palatable and manageable. The author provides a list of excellent colleges that do not require an SAT score. i.e. Bates, Bowdoin, and Harvey Mudd engineering school. Olin College provides a free engineering school. The author recommends that students provide a resume, chart and no picture.
Essays should provide a sincere recitation of your accomplishments and what you plan to contribute to the college. Applicants should demonstrate a passion for the area of study in the application. In addition, areas of strength should be emphasized.
The authors really do not explain the pitfalls of selecting a top school.
First of all, what is a top school? Is it a place with a 100% job
placement rate or a place where only PhDs are hired or a place where
top SAT scorers are highly sought out? In my own experience, it is
important to visit the institution of choice and talk to current and
former students. Do students seem to be happy? Are they overworked?
Do teachers teach or do student teachers take up most of the teaching
load because professors are too busy publishing and doing research?
These are all areas to be investigated because college is a multi-year
commitment in time and money.
The author doesn't say so; however, a top school consists of the following:
o excellent job placement/prospects in your major area of study
o good preparation for graduate school work, if ever contemplated
o comprehensive teaching by academic types or working professionals
o a current curriculum (although professional licensure courses of study
are mandated by state or federal law)
o a reasonable cost for the value of the education provided
o a roster of accomplishment by the alumni
i.e. Professional licensure, PhD or graduate education, publishing,
inventorship, identification by the print media
There are things you do not want in a top school. i.e.
o professors or teachers who delegate too much teaching to assistants
o instruction that is too esoteric or theoretical
o an institution that doesn't link the education to professional placement
o too much adherence to bell curves and rigid grading rubrics
o teaching that assumes too much prior background in the subject matter
o an environment which is not conducive to learning
o an unaffordable cost for the education
A great help!.......2007-08-31
I, like some of the others was a bit put off by the title, however, I bought the book after browsing through the chapters because of the practical and pragmatic advice given.
I did not know that the information that you give for your child's interests in one part of the college application would have a direct bearing on how he/she should write their essays - that one should support the other.
I also did not know how important the essays are on a college application until my son came home with his guidance counselor's form and ALL the questions were in the form of an essay directly taken from the college application.
If my son comes in with well-thought-out essays that showcase him and what he can offer a school, is he to be considered "packaged" because his parents bought a book that helped him?
The negative comments (which are in the minority and really should not have the prominent position they do on this website) really do not reflect the majority of us that have found it invaluable.
For smart parents who want to even out the playing fields.......2007-08-06
Parenting of teenagers has become very polarized in America, as the reviews for What Colleges Don't Tell You seem to demonstrate: There are the involved parents who maintain close relationships with their teenage children, and there are parents who prefer to let their teenagers bring themselves up with minimal input or guidance--independence at all costs--who are outraged by high-achieving families that work together.
Parents who value the art of parenting right into the teenage years can gain a lot from What Colleges Don't Tell You. The book is very respectful of teenagers and tells parents how they can guide and remain close during their children's high school years. But for those who think that parenting ends when their kids become teenagers--or for kids who resent any parental involvement--the book will probably seem foreign and even threatening.
Parents of high achievers will be especially impressed with the insights that this book provides. Admission to the prestige colleges is made more accessible and more logical for hard working, dedicated students. Wissner-Gross helps the reader to understand the current admissions system, which apparently is no longer based solely on GPAs and SATs; she helps the reader understand the many subjective credentials--and how a dedicated student can earn them--in a world where the "haves" prefer to keep these factors secret.
Adults who believe in blind obedience--the high school is always right--may find this approach to college admissions daunting. But more educated parents who prefer to have the playing fields evened out will particularly appreciate the book's in-depth discussions of grades, college essays, and studying.
I don't recommend this book for conventional thinkers who have stereotypical teenage children and prom queens who lack focus and academic commitment. Benefiting from this book probably requires child-centered families with lots of rapport. It seems targeted more toward today's involved parents, rather than 70s style do-your-own-thing parents. I strongly recommend this book to families where parents and their teenagers work as a team. Other people won't get it. I wish it had been available back when I was in high school.
Like Having a Personal College Advisor!.......2007-08-04
This book was released as my daughter was entering 12th grade...I wish Eliabeth Wissner-Gross had written it sooner! In "secret" #14, she discusses some academic competitions and programs which are highly regarded by colleges and are less well-known than Intel and Westinghouse. We had never heard about them, even though we're in a highly academic school district and this is my second child to pass through it! Her unique perspective on how to approach and prepare for standardized testing is detailed, extremely informative and may actually improve your relationship with your college-bound kid! Every section of this book provided valuable information that made us feel like we had a personal college advisor!

the book to have for Pilot job seekers.......2006-06-27
This book goes beyond the average "job hunting" book.
It explains in Detail the specific steps to be hired as a pilot.
I would buy it again.
a must for airline pilot cadidates.......1999-08-31
I not only read the book, I met with the author to prepare for my interview. It was most helpful in my getting hired by a major airline. I gave the book to a friend and he also was hired by my airline. He then gave it to someone else. (Sorry, Irv.) This book is a definite must.
Extremely informative information for future airline pilots.......1997-12-19
As stated above, extremely informative information for the future ailine pilot to be. This book is very easy to read, clear and concise. Irv gets right to the point on all his topics whether it would be writing the cover letter and resume to what color suit to wear to the interview. There is definitely an experience factor that went into writing this very short book.
A must buy for the on-going airline hiring boom.

Recommend to all Applicants.......2007-01-10
This book was very informative and also recommended by my wife's hiring company, Eli Lilly.
Like having your own interview consultant.......2006-03-02
Ms. Alexander provides a great source of help with her PharmRepSelect book and CDs. I read a couple of books on the subject and found the PharmRepSelect Interview Insight discs to be tremendously helpful. I combined several books in my mission of getting a job in this field. For under a hundred dollars, I feel that I got the best info available. It's like hiring an interview consultant; hours and hours of help. I listened to mock interviews and practiced my techniques. I learned how to phrase my answers more precisely and sound very professional, which was the key in doing well on my interviews. I recommend this unique package to everyone interviewing for a sales job. Five stars!
Gold!! Keeps you in the game! Got me my Job!! .......2006-02-23
PharmRepSelect landed me the job of my dreams. PharmRepSelect is written by an expert in the field that actually knows how to communicate information that will keep you from giving up! The real reason PharmRepSelect is different and better then the other books on the same subject is that it gives Encouragement. Out of the other four books I read about getting one of these jobs, it was only PharmRepselect book and Interview Insight CDs that made me feel the most confident and motivated to achieve my goal. None of the other books I read had this effect. In a job market that is crowded and frustrating with masses of people applying and interviewing, its very easy to give up. This kept me in the game. Of course this book is loaded with inside information, the dos and don'ts, but the big difference is the encouragement factor. If you give up on the interview process, you won't get the job. I landed my job offer because I did not give up. PharmRepSelect explained the mechanics of how these managers choose candidates and how to overcome these obstacles. I credit PharmRepSelect book, audio book and Interview Insight audio CD for landing me a job I thought I would never get! I was able to look, sound and act like the perfect candidate. Now I have the perfect job. This book and CDs are gold.
Not Worth the Money.......2006-02-22
This book was not what I expected at all. I thought the information was very general and there were far too many pages devoted to answering questions (where you fill in the blanks) and not enough real information provided by the author.
Read, Listen and Get the Job!.......2005-12-06
Reviewer: James Wheeler "James" (PA) - See all my reviews
Hard to find , but worth the trouble. Lisa Alexander's PharmRepSelect audio book CD is the condensed version of her book. Lisa , very naturally, reads her story about the pharmaceutical sales industry, without some of the anecdotes that make her book so enjoyable; but she has managed to keep all of the important technical information. Lisa explains interview techniques effortlessly and allows us to listen to a real manager's point of view. All of the motivational quotes used in the book are included on the audio CD and the flow of the seventy minute CD makes it easy to listen to. I recommend the paperback book for understanding , her audio book (orange CD) for re-enforcement and her Interview Insight CD (blue CD) for copying successful techniques. Interview Insight (blue CD) is really good for experienced sales people or career changers, that find themselves interviewing again, like me. My only complaint is that these CDs and book are hard to find. After a recommendation from a Recruiter friend to go listen to these so I could polish up, it was a a bear to find them. Just look up Lisa Alexander, or PharmRepSelect or Interview Insight, however you find these helpful CDs-just be glad you did.It made my interviewing much easier and successful.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent for executives below C level.......2004-08-26
This book is full of information and negotiating strategies that are very useful for more junior executives, where hiring an employment attorney is probably not necessary. It enables you to do a decent job of getting the most you can without going over the line. It is especially good at giving practical examples that can help you make tradeoffs that create win-win outcomes (most negotiating books have this concept but are too abstract). Finally, it is very helpful in making sure you are protected if things don't work out. I bought some of the other recommended books in this category, but they are much too basic if you are an executive.
Its worth the money.......2004-05-18
I bought this book recently when I was changing my job. I was desperate to take the new job and would have taken the job even without negotiation. This book provided me the strategies to increase my salary by almost 10%. The book has several good examples ( that fit very well atleast to my situation ).
A must read even if you are not changing jobs.
Excellent book on negotiating.......2003-02-11
Excellent book - The author's approach is very logical and he clearly has the experience to validate his comments. He uses sound principles, excellent examples and memorable quotes. I would definately recommend this book - an excellent book which is hard to put down.
This is a great read!.......2002-11-16
I actually took Prof. Miller for a course in negotiating and he was excellent. If you're not lucky enough to get to see him in person, read this book. He was on the management side and knows what they're thinking. If you incorporate some of these techniques in negotiating your next salary you will come out ahead. Also, most of these techniques can be applied to any negotiation. Read it, you will not be disappointed.
Practical and useful guide.......2002-04-07
Great book. This book covered everything I needed to know to get a great salary and perks that I would not have thought to ask for. It was very readable and the advice was easy to use. I would recommend this book to anyone changing jobs.

Customer Reviews:
Where did they get these questions?.......2006-07-29
After reading other reviews, I thought that this book would be a good book to get. But I was very disappointed. I would not use almost any of the questions. Much of the questions are too personal to ask someone, and they don't provide useful information.
I suppose some people somewhere could use it ..........2005-11-11
I'd like to give the book a no-star rating, as I can't really say whether it is good or no good. I just have trouble imagining anyone actually using the thing. It actually IS a bare list of 4000 questions, divided into their most obvious topical classifications, for people who can't think of anything else to say. "Think" is the operative word here, as they say; questions tend to pre-suppose more thinking than mere declarative statements. So I suppose the idea is to impress people with your intellect, though I can't ever remember seeing or hearing much evidence that intellect is what matters in how Americans form an estimate of each other. And, in the heat of trying to get close to someone (in whatever sense), do you really think you'll REMEMBER these lines? Sort of like that picture you have of the tourist leafing through their phrasebook, looking for the right phrase, with the ultimate joke of the joke knowing that the thing was left behind the bidet. Or the cartoon about the ineptico who tried courting the girl he'd picked out the herd by referring to a list of things to talk about over dinner if things wound down a bit early.
Are these people serious? Is American culture really so autistic and de-brained that these people need guidance on what to talk about, not just with a member of the opposite sex that's rendered you speechless but ANYBODY?
Well, I just don't think you're going to get laid with this book. Or get a job. Or distract the host while your significant other (assuming you could snag one) makes off with the blender.
So So, 4000 devided by 2.......2005-07-30
I am not very outgoing, so I thought this book would help me start some conversations with people I don't know. Yes, there are some questions I never would have thought to ask, an some questions I had fun answering my self. However, there are so many duplicates! Just the same question rewritten 5 different ways! Not to mention, most of the questions were a little too personal to be asking someone you don't know. It is a great book to sit down with your mate on a rainy or snowy winter night, and each read a few questions. If for nothing else, you may learn a few new things about yourself!
4,000 Questions for Getting to Know Anyone and Everyone.......2005-07-19
I bought this book as a sort of game for my fiance' and I. I figured with 4000 questions, how could it be anything but dull?
I was disappointed as I flipped through the book, to see that we had already asked each other most of these questions. I was looking for interesting, conversation sparking questions--and these were your streotypical "just getting to know you" questions. We resorted to making up our own questions.
If you want a general book with general questions, this is for you. If you're looking for a more in depth, personal book with exciting questions--this is NOT it.
Random is good.......2005-07-14
This book contains many unique and random questions aimed at starting discussions. It has provided much entertainment in any setting and really allows you to get to know others.

A pitch and a promise.......2005-11-22
For the last three years, I have waded through the minefield known as the world of publicity. As a New Yorker, I expect the unexpected. However, I was not prepared for all of the hucksters, snake oil salesman, and con artist I found who prey on people who are looking to get quality media training. Standing head and shoulders above that crowd is Gayl Murphy and her book Interview Tactics.
In addition to all of the obvious things you'd expect to see in a book about interviews, she also shares many subtle pieces of information that only a person of her experience could provide. Through her book, she becomes your coach. Like any good coach, sometimes she says what you already know...she just says it in a way that gets you to remember it and to act on it. She doesn't try to change you, she just wants you to put your best foot forward and to understand how he game is played. That's real training.
If you truly want to develop your interview skills, you should invest in yourself and get this book. It has successfully guided me through 65 radio and 12 television interviews this year. I have looked around and there is nothing better.

Winning Tactics.......2005-11-22
A fantastic book who guides you to overcome any fears you may have about the Media. With her direct command and knowledge of her field she's a real aid to us who are starting to face the media in our careers. Gayl's advise to create catchy sounbytes is amazing. I have reworked my introductions and presentations to incorporate this and now my approach is much more direct and comprehensable. People get it in seconds, what you do, who you are and what you're trying to accomplish. I love her book, her charisma and her Media Wisdom.
A real Jump Start!.......2005-11-21
Gayle Murphy's book, "Interview Tactics..." is a must read for anyone who is striving to break through the brick wall of self promotion and give great interviews. I loved it and recommend it to all my entertainment career development clients. I can get my clients into the spotlight, but I can't speak for them, Gayle Murphy's book is a real assett to anyone who doesn't want to look stupid when they're standing on the X and the light turns on! - Meredith Day/Founder, National Talent Development
Media Virgin to Confidence - This is a must-have resource!.......2005-11-21
I owe a great deal to Gayl Murphy and INTERVIEW TACTICS -- and I can't say enough in praise for Gayl and her fabulous book! As a newly published author one year ago, I embarked on an amazing journey, from (terrified) Media Virgin to a confident and well-received guest on dozens of radio shows, media interviews, and television appearances. Of all that I went through, including various media training programs, coaching, and preparations, some costing thousands of dollars, INTERVIEW TACTICS remains my personal media Bible -- a HUGE bargain for $29.95.

"At last, an in-depth book about the casting process that tells actors what it is like to be on the other side of the desk, and a must read for the aspiring casting director!" -Marilyn Henry, coauthor, How to Be a Working Actor
Customer Reviews:
Great Book.......2001-10-04
I thought it was a great book. It's filled with a lot of very useful information and it's always great to get info direct from casting directors since they are the ones who we all need to audition for!
Sucks.......2001-08-05
This books sucks. Mind you, there are over 350,000 aspiring actors. The majority of them have been told and rehearsed on how beautiful and talented they are.
Only 10 new actors are "broken in" each year. This book sucks.
The Best Book.......2000-06-15
This book was by far the best I have read on auditions. It let me know how to act and what to do and not do to get a directors attention. I reccomend this book to anyone and everyone who are looking for an acting job.
Customer Reviews:
Great Reference Book .......2007-08-20
Francine Silverman's "Talk Radio for Authors" is a fine example of what a "how to book" should be. It is well written and organized in such a way that the reader need not wade through every chapter to get the information he or she needs.
The talk radio shows, both internet and terrestrial, are grouped in sections according to their themes, including programs dealing with authors and their craft, to ones on antiques and collectables, or others serving health enthusiast, animal lovers, hikers, or technophiles. Each show, its theme, its objective, and the type of guests it courts was described clearly and precisely.
However, the section I found most enlightening was the one discussing the hosts' opinions of the best and worst kind of guests. This section is a must for anyone who is about to be interviewed on a radio show. It could make the difference between selling yourself and your book or exposing yourself to the audience in an unfavorable light.
The appendixes that followed the main part of the book were almost as extensive and just as informative as the chapters that preceded them. The first was a concise list of radio show directories. The second listed authors who had appeared on radio shows and gave a brief description of their experiences and works. The third appendix contained the varied biographies of numerous radio hosts.
I also found the articles at the end of the book very useful, especially Laura Ramirez's Let the Guest Beware and Alex Carroll's Making Radio Interviews Really Pay.
This is a great reference book, and I will be referring to it often.
A good directory of various internet and terrestrial "radio" talk shows.......2007-06-13
The cover of the book gives the appearance of a "how to manual." It is not (just in case you think it may have ANY "how-to" in it). This is a directory (think "phone book") of "radio" talk shows, assuming that radio now means any ongoing recording or broadcast over the internet, terrestrial, and/or satellite. It is a personal collection of several shows the author has cultivated relationships with, but is by no means complete, nor anywhere near being so. Is it worth the investment? Yes. But I say that as an avid collector of knowledge, and not as a casual book buyer. If you are looking for a "how-to get on the radio" book, pick up Joe Sabah's "How to Get on Radio Talk Shows All Across America." THAT is a complete, step-by-step manual (which also comes with a database of over 900 terrestrial radio talk shows) on "how-to-do-it." THIS BOOK has the personal opinions of several hosts, all saying the same thing ("be fun, interesting, cheerfully answer ANY question we throw at you..."), and is a breakdown of "radio stations" (mostly internet radio)by categories. If this were 500 pages thicker, I would give it 5 stars. As it is, it is more of an overview than a required reference. I still recommend you buy it if you are at all serious about doing radio interviews. But do not buy it thinking that you will learn HOW to research, contact, pitch show ideas, or give good interviews. This is ONLY a listing of different places you may be interviewed, based on your target demographic. Use it as a springboard for more research, not as your "go to guide."

"Are you (or a woman you love) being cheated out of 33 percent of your earnings? If you're a woman, over your working lifetime you will lose between $700,000 and $2 million -- simply because of your sex. Is that fair? No. Can it be stopped? Absolutely. The wage gap is a steady drain on the daily lives of women and our families. Rarely do we step back and add up what's missing -- better medical treatment, child care, housing, food, or retirement savings that women could have afforded if they were paid as well as men. Getting Even exposes the discrepancy between what women and men make -- and how it affects us all. It reveals that the wage gap is not going away on its own. And it explains how to close the wage gap -- and, finally, get women even. In this intelligently argued and startling book, Evelyn Murphy, Ph.D., humanizes the numbers through real-life stories and a wealth of data that has never before been examined. She shows how the wage gap pinches the daily lives of families throughout the country, at every economic level and in every industry. And she explains why, even though women have more opportunities than their mothers did, the wage gap persists: The American workplace still harbors an astonishing amount of discrimination, including blatant as well as complex hidden barriers, unspoken assumptions, unexamined attitudes, and habitual ways of behaving. But Murphy also brings good news: The wage gap can be closed. Having served as an economist, politician, public official, and corporate officer, she has a 360-degree view of the problem -- and of the solution. In a book that will explode into public debate, Murphy issues the indictment, rouses us to action -- and tells us exactly how to get even. "

Very good treatment of a complex issue. A bit too peppy........2006-12-12
As a jumping off point I want to say that the comments by previous reviewer William Wentworth suggest to me that he stopped reading the book very early. Wentworth explains away the wage gap as being tied to women working shorter hours and (incorrectly) says that Murphy missed this. In chapters other than the first one, Murphy goes on to analyze that women are paid less because they work fewer hours, but that women work fewer hour because of having more housework and childcare responsibilities. She goes through case studies of women who after having children were pushed toward shorter hours by their employers. We have different expectations for men and women as a society and we tend to push men into roles that are entirely compensated while we push women into roles that are uncompensated. That means men have more money than women. Also as Murphy points out, even at the same number of hours women get paid less, and a partial cause for that is that loosing a bit of experience early on in a career by taking time off or on part-time has repurcussions later. The wage gap is a complex issue, and Murphy is describing it in such a way that an average person without so much background in this area can grasp the situation. She does a good job at hitting many many facets of the problem without oversimplifying.
For me the biggest flaw here was that Murphy relies heavily on case studies of the women she interviewed. These demonstrate discrimination that was sometimes subtle and sometimes suprisingly blatant. At the same time, one can always find a case study to prove anything. Murphy has statistics too, but that isn't what she tends to rely on. Another flaw was that Murphy is really pushing her solution to the wage gap. The solution is basically advice to women in the workforce on what each can do. These are geared towards different positions in the company. I'm not saying it's a bad solution. I'm a pessimist and she's really peppy about that solution. It's good advice, but I roll my eyes at the suggestion of a three chapter panacea.
This is a very good intuitive approach to the subject. Likely many women should read it (men too, although the subject isn't so close to home). It deals with complex issues, and describes them in an understandable way. These issues are carefully chosen to make a big picture. This is probably the easiest read on this topic that I have found which still had me surprised and thinking.
An Important Book.......2006-09-13
Smart, provocative, well-researched and wonderfully written, this book is completely persuasive. Anyone interested in fairness in the workplace (something we should all be interested in) will want to read it.
Stunning revelations, thoughtful analysis.......2006-08-25
Getting Even exposes the shocking realities behind America's male-female wage gap. The authors prove their case not just with jaw-dropping facts and figures, but with fascinating accounts of how women are shortchanged -- literally and figuratively -- every day on the job. The book also offers a savvy remedy for this entrenched, and often invisible, form of gender bias. The writing is clear and persuasive. Getting Even's lucid argument deserves national debate.
Shocking and Necessary.......2006-08-23
It's hard to believe that companies and individuals can still get away with this extraordinarily misogynist behavior, but Murphy and Graff have done the legwork and the math to prove not only that they do, but how they do it and how we can begin to put an end to it. This book should be mandatory reading for anyone who is or loves a woman or girl and believes that women should be treated with basic human decency (and paid that way, too).
A must read.......2006-05-08
"Getting Even" is a provocative book and a must read. Evelyn Murphy has clearly done her homework as evidenced by the abundant data she provides, detailing the many ways in which women in the workplace are losing money. But more important, she provides solutions. (The case study of the State of Minnesota is a great example.) This book belongs on the desk of CEOs and HR managers everywhere.
