5 out of 5 stars Just keeps giving.......2007-07-12

This is a book that just keeps giving. I bought it quite a while ago and really did not read it right away --- but ultimately I read the whole thing -- and I must admit I found myself appearing again and again in the descriptions.

But what really is great about this book is that if you just leave it on the coffee table or something like that, then you will find yourself picking it up and randomly looking at a chapter here and a chapter there -- and guess what -- it will all be relevant (if you are being honest with yourself). You will find yourself, your peers, coworkers, and your life.

Worth having.

4 out of 5 stars Surprisingly helpful from an accidental reader.......2007-05-20

My wife bought the book and I was sceptical when I first saw it. I accidentally left it on a low table and our puppy picked it up and shredded most of the first chapter. I bought another copy from Amazon to replace the damaged copy. As I tried to repair the torn pages a few words caught my attention and after that I could not put it down. Take it from an initial sceptic that this book has very helpful suggestions and practical advice that you can readily apply. I highly recommend this book to anybody who is working.

2 out of 5 stars Pop-Psychology.......2007-05-14

This book was assigned reading for a "Leadership" in business class. The first two chapters set the tone for the rest of the book. Read those, and the rest will be just variations on the same theme. I now use the book as a doorstop.

4 out of 5 stars Smart Advice.......2007-05-12

As a veteran of the corporate world, I found the case studies and recommended solutions to common workplace snafus right on target. Best of all, the authors urge individuals to find out their options and own their decisions. In other words, no need to be the victim of an unhealthly work relationship. Hope is out there for those who can take a step back and not get tangled up in other person's bad behavior!

2 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2007-04-13

With all the glowing reviews, I thought this book would have something new and innovative, something I hadn't heard before. No such luck. Some interesting strategies and tactics for dealing with difficult people and see how you might be contributing to the problem, but nothing you won't find in other books on the subject.

I eventually gave up before finishing the CD because of the lack of anything new and I got tired of listen to the authors :-(

Book Description

If you have Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), you must be pretty familiar with the link between your condition and nutrition. Instead of adding another voice to the chorus of people telling you what you shouldn't eat, Elaine Magee gives you positive advice about what foods you should be having almost every day.

Tell Me What to Eat If I Have Irritable Bowel Syndrome begins with an overview of IBS. Readers get a detailed yet completely understandable picture of the disease- a picture that is based on the latest medical information. Readers gain a better understanding of what IBS is and what they can do to limit the impact of its symptoms.

Also included are dozens of healthful, mouth-watering recipes, plus supermarket and restaurant advice and sample weekly menu plans that are totally grounded in reality.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars NOT Consistent with the current research.......2007-04-24

Unfortunately a well-intentioned author provides just another "me too" guide, which includes all the persistent misconceptions about the role of diet in IBS-D; D&C; and C subpopulations. Clearly not current with the literature and does not understand the processing of benign antigens by the gastroimmune system nor the process of oral tolerance (which is compromised in this condition leading to the symptoms). As with any of these books, authors do not yet understand the fact that to achieve a high-rate and significant degree of remission the diet must be patient-specific. This cannot be accomplished with the procedures recommended much less with the dietary advice provided. Probabilities dictate that you are bound to find some people who experience some relief from some of the recommendations, and many people who receive little relief. Some will experience worsening of their symptoms. IBS patients will be consuming foods and additives left and right which perpetuate their symptoms using these types of books for guidance which is well out of date.

4 out of 5 stars Informative.......2007-01-09

This book was very informative but I already knew most of what was in the book from research of my own. I would suggest this book to anyone suffering from IBS who wants to learn more about this health issue. Great book.

2 out of 5 stars Totally contridictory information.......2006-04-23

On page 40 she states, "55% of patients reported that bran made their IBH worse and yet the 1st recipe in "20 Recipe You Cannot Live Without" is Raisin Bran Muffins! Whereas in the definitive book on IBS "Eating for IBS" says stay away from whole wheat, milk, cheese, and red meat (which I followed and it solved our IBS problem), this book pushes whole wheat, whole milk, eggs, and dairy.

"Eating for IBS" helped. Following the recipes in this book would not.

5 out of 5 stars Very useful guide.......2004-03-10

I have IBS/D and I found this book to be a very useful guide. It helped me to realize that I had been eating foods that were hurting me. The list of gassy foods is especially on-point and the most comprehensive one that I've seen yet. I've followed the recommendations in this book closely and noticed a marked difference in how I feel. A great guide to keep on hand in your kitchen.

3 out of 5 stars Good book if it's not the only one you read........2002-08-28

This book focuses too much on just fiber and not enough on the difference between soluble and insoluble fiber. Insoluble fiber and even a low-fat meal can be a deadly combination for an IBS sufferer. The recipes that the author considers invaluable for an IBS diet contain fat that is far in excess of what I could tolerate. I have a master's degree in nutrition and have also studied food chemistry and baking properties. There are other alternatives to the relativly high-fat and high insoluble fiber that this author recommends.

Book Description

This virtually wordless Bible storybook is the prequel to Zonderkidz’ bestselling Read With Me Bible. The See With Me Bible features approximately twenty-five of the most beloved and compelling Bible stories for children ages six and under. Featuring powerful illustrations by Dennis Jones, the tales are told with great visual detail that unfolds from panel to panel, making them easy to follow for pre-readers and non-readers, and allowing parents to tell stories with as much or as little detail as desired.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars refreshingly & expressively illustrated.......2007-09-03

I bought this for my boys ages 3 and 6 and they enjoy this a lot. They can tell themselves what's going on in the story as kind of a reading comprehension exercise after hearing or reading the actual biblical account at church or from us. I can't say enough about the illustrations, they are so expressive and active and dynamic! There's nothing "boring" about this Bible. I like that it makes the Bible exciting and relevant to kids.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE!!.......2007-03-04

This has to be the BEST "picture book" i have ever seen for smaller children. The illustrations are so inspiring that i want to go study illustration!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Pictorial Presentation of the Truth.......2006-07-02

A picture is worth a thousand words and this book does a great job of illustrating the fundatmental Truths of the Bible. By using pictures, the reader can use his/her own words to give life to the pictures. The illustrations are great. They really capture the eyes of a pre-reader. Nice!!!

5 out of 5 stars Great for Preschoolers!!.......2006-02-03

My husband and I bought this book for our 4 year old and he loves it. The age that Amazon gave it is not really accurate. I think they said 9-12. The book says 6 and under. There are almost no words, about a sentence every 15 pages. Our son loves to just look at the pages and then ask questions about parts he doesn't understand. It is also great that the parents can tell the story with as much detail as they wish. Over all I think this is just a great book for any prereader.

4 out of 5 stars Very informative.......2007-07-12

It is very well written in simple language which is easily absorbed by the reader

5 out of 5 stars Simple and straightforward.......2007-02-28

I like this book for its simplicity and getting straight to the point of what to do, as well as what not to do, with this disease. I keep the list of things to avoid eating on my kitchen cabinet as a daily reminder. I found this book to be very helpful to me in my treatment and management of acid reflux, along with the information provided with my Prevacid prescription.

4 out of 5 stars Shockingly helpful to most patients ..........2006-07-10

It is truly astonishing how many competent MDs treating acid reflux don't warn their patients of the dietary restrictions facing those who suffer from acid reflex. This applies not only to family doctors but incredibly ENTs! As such, patients are strongly advised to "understand their own bodies." All our bodies are different. Some patients will have strong negative reactions to chocolate. Others to orange juice. Some to red wine. Some to apple juice. To fix acid reflux problems - and it is almost always fixable - it is critical to understand what particular foods and beverages are causing it. This book will help properly identify.

1 out of 5 stars don't buy this book - recipes NOT for acid reflux.......2006-07-08

Don't buy this book if you have acid reflux and want some helpful recipies. Many of the recipes include ingredients that most people with reflux CAN NOT have. You'll have more luck picking up a random cookbook and making changes yourself. Some of the general acid reflux info was OK, but since I bought it mainly for some good and easy recipes...total waste of money. It was pretty clear that the author just mindlessly slapped some stuff together and is not an expert in this area. Don't buy this book! I wish I hadn't.

5 out of 5 stars Tell me what to eat if I have acid reflux.......2006-06-26

This is a wonderful book. It told me more than I thought it would. Just not what to eat but reason that this happens and what it can turn into. This was the best money I have spent in a long time. It also helped me with the Doctors visit and things I should have known already. Thanks a million.

Book Description

Articulation disorder, the most common speech communication problem, is identified in approximately 1 million preschool children each year. Research suggests that problems with articulation, if left unchecked, can lead to reading and spelling difficulties, social challenges, and self-esteem problems. The strongest resource a child with an articulation problem can have is a well-informed parent who knows which articulation behaviors are normal, which are not, and how best to guide his or her child through the process of speech therapy.

This book helps parents decide whether the sound errors their child is experiencing are developmental and within normal limits for their age. The book offers a range of strategies to employ when a child does need some extra help to work through a particular speech difficulty. The book also addresses the emotions parents deal with and devotes a chapter to signs and symptoms of other common communication problems that may co-exist.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Very Helpful.......2007-09-27

This book has a lot of good ideas and suggestions. It has helped me alot in being able understand my child's speech problem. With understanding and knowledge we are on a right track now!

5 out of 5 stars Autism and Speech Challenges.......2007-04-06

Simply stated, I purchased the book for helping my grandson who is on the autism spectrum and has difficulty pronouncing certain sounds. Time will tell how effective Dougherty's manuscript will be.

Also, I can share the book with parents whose children have articulation problems. In my last years of teaching before retirement, I perceived that many more children have distorted speech patterns than when I began teaching in 1962. Early intervention seems the most successful approach in forming habits of speech and expression.

5 out of 5 stars Good Resource for Parents.......2007-02-15

As a speech language pathologist, I would recommend this book to parents because it is full of useful information about your child's speech and language, as well as activity ideas to promote progress and improvement. I frequently refer my clients' parents to this book because it is easy to read and provides specifics about many common speech and language issues young children experience.

5 out of 5 stars Buy it!!.......2006-04-22

If your child has any kind of sound problems or just doesn't seem to talk clearly, buy this book. It is interesting and gives you all the information you need. There were fun activities to do with my daughter to help her learn to say her /l/ sounds. She is doing so much better and I am thrilled.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Guide.......2005-12-03

I was happy to write the foreword for this book because I believe all parents should have this information. The information provided in this book is practical but comprehensive. The numerous exercises you will find throughout the book will show you how to enhance your child's vocabulary and early literacy skils, and will encourage your child's ability to say sounds clearly and correctly.

Book Description

When we hear that someone close to us has been diagnosed with cancer, we want nothing more than to comfort them with words of hope, support, and love. But sometimes we don't know what to say or do, and don't feel comfortable asking. With sensitive insights and thoughtful anecdotes, HELP ME LIVE provides a personal yet thoroughly researched account of words and actions that are most helpful. Based on the author's own experiences with cancer, as well as interviews and surveys with many others who have had this disease, each chapter tells intimate stories about one of the 20 most important messages people with cancer want to convey, such as "I need to forget—and laugh," "Asking my permission can spare me pain," "I want you to understand if I don't call you back or see you," and "I want compassion, not pity; comfort, not advice." You'll learn that communicating effectively doesn't necessarily mean there's a "right thing" to say or do, but that you can achieve the desired result: to make those who are ill feel better. In candid and beautifully detailed prose, HELP ME LIVE will help you find the words or gestures to show how much you care.

Any of us who have had a loved one go through cancer know what we're at a loss as to what to say to that person. This book will come to your rescue. I would recommend you buy your loved one a copy, tell them to read it, and then bring them some tea and talk about it when they're finished! Buy yourself a copy too.

The first hand stories are beautiful, you'll cry.

4 out of 5 stars excellent for caregivers especially.......2007-05-12

Clear and helpful ideas and hints about dealing with cancer survivor's. Every caregiver could benefit by reading

5 out of 5 stars Hope Sparks HOPE.......2006-11-13

As a cancer survivor and caregiver, I found this book not only needed but essential. With sensitivity and warmth, it tackles an important subject that must be addressed. As much as we all wish, cancer is not going to go away anytime soon. One in two American men and one in three American women will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetimes. Survivorship has become a national priority and it will continue to grow.

So what do you say to someone whose life has been turned upside down by a cancer diagnosis?

Hope interviewed scores of cancer survivors asking them bluntly about the comments and actions that helped them most, as well as those that wounded. Her book is a practical outline on how to truly help and be present in a cancer survivor's life. More important, is it a storybook full of tales (some quite funny) that illustrate words and actions that have helped or hurt.

I have given copies of this book to many intelligent and sensitive but uniformed people -- people who have asked things like, How much time does the doctor think you have? How much life insurance do you have on your husband?

As more and more cancer survivors thrive, we become a force to be reckoned with. Cancer survivors should not feel slighted in addition to all the other issues they must face. No one can take the disease away, but Hope gives those who have friends and loved ones dealing with the disease an honest and practical blueprint for truly respecting and understanding their needs.

Hope has become a spokeswoman for communicating with compassion and her articles and presentations are truly changing the way we talk about cancer and surviving. What Hope has done for the survivorship movement is remarkable. Her book should be required reading for doctors, nurses and anyone entering the health care profession, as well as anyone touched by cancer.

3 out of 5 stars Contradictory.......2006-11-10

I should preface my comments by saying that, though I have not lived with cancer, I have lived with cancer around me. Both my parents and one of my oldest friends (diagnosed at 35) died of cancer. I have been to numerous treatments with a non-Hodgkins cancer patient and with a terminally ill young mother suffering from breast cancer. While this book gives good insight, it has way too many contradictions. Hope admits this--that what is salve for one is like a knife for another. While it's shocking to read what some people will actually say, the people who would take the time to read this book aren't likely the ones who would say such things.

Having been around entirely too much cancer since the age of 10, I would simply say, think before you speak, say it outloud to yourself before you put your foot in your mouth, and be there in whatever ways you can.

5 out of 5 stars Delivering Hope.......2006-05-17

Lori Hope's book addresses an issue no other book has tackled.
For the first time, a woman with cancer tells how friends and family can help. Usually, it's the medical profession telling patients with cancer what to do or telling their families how to help. In this book, Hope shares her down-to-earth examples and humorous stories. A lung cancer survivor and Emmy Award-winning documentary film producer, Hope tells people like me how not to help -- from overreacting to the diagnosis (I've done this) to saying, "whatever you need, let me know" (I've done this, too). Now, I have a context in which to help those many friends of mine who have lived with cancer. Instead of asking a global, "what do you need?" I learned from Hope's book to ask instead, "can I bring over dinner tonight?" "would you like to go for a walk?" or "may I do those dishes for you?" and "I'd be happy to take you to chemo treatments once a month...what day works for you?" I learned a lot, not just about helping friends with cancer, but about really helping.

Book Description

It's a world we barely see, but it is teeming with life. In the dust of a typical house, carpet beetles, mites, silverfish, and other creatures live and die, producing new generations every few months. Mold, bacteria, and yeast lurk undetected in heating and cooling systems. Debris dispersed into the air from these organisms can cause runny noses, itchy eyes, coughing, headaches, and breathing difficulties. Some people, especially those made highly sensitive by allergies, suffer from devastating health problems and the worry that, as one such sufferer lamented, "My house is killing me!"

Scrutinizing house dust and air samples with a microscope, indoor air quality expert Jeffrey C. May has spent his career helping people identify what's causing their chronic health problems. In My House Is Killing Me! he draws on the dramatic personal stories of his clients' suffering and relief to help readers understand the links between environmental factors and problems like allergies and asthma. Explaining how air conditioning, finished basements, and other home features affect air quality, he offers a step-by-step approach to identifying, controlling, and often eliminating the sources of indoor pollutants and allergens. If we could see this contamination, May observes, the air would look as murky as stagnant water, and we would know not to breathe it.

Reading My House Is Killing Me! lets you see your house the way an expert would. Just as he looks at spaces and systems during an indoor air quality investigation, May focuses first on the areas of daily life (bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchen), then looks into attics and basements (including heating and air conditioning), and finally moves outside to the garage and the exterior of a home. Along with offering a wealth of practical advice and proven solutions for various problems, he includes a glossary of terms and a list of valuable resources.

5 out of 5 stars Worked for my family.......2007-01-10

My daughters have a range of chronic respiratory issues to simple allergies. This book helped me realize what I can do for them and it has made a difference. The main point is to find the source of the allergen before purchasing solutions. We thought our air purifier and humidifier were great machines to help with cleansing and adding moisture to the indoor air. Boy, were we wrong. We may have actually been spewing out mold particles and distributing dust mite fecal material into the air. The first part of the book was hard to read because it shows the common causes of allergies - dust mites and other little creatures that may be in your pillow at this moment. The book made suggestions from simple to the complex. Some of our changes were simple like using a wet mop on our floors, adding dust-mite-proof pillow cases, and running stuffed animals through the dryer. Fortunately, we didn't have to go to the extreme to get some relief and my daughters are coughing and sneezing much, much less. This book gives you some tools to help you become an indoor air detective in your home or at least, where to begin to get help.

2 out of 5 stars Wonderful resource for some allergies -- but not others.......2005-11-11

"My House Is Killing Me!" is a wonderful book with lots of great information for people who are allergic to mold, mildew, and dust mites.

Contrary to the broadly worded title, this book contains relatively little information for people who are allergic to tree pollen, grass pollen, weed pollen, pet dander, and chemicals (i.e., chemical sensitivity). Unfortunately, I'm allergic to everthing on the second list and nothing on the first list. So, most of this book wasn't very helpful for me.

However, if dust mites, mold, or mildew trigger your allergies, you will find this book quite helpful. Each chapter addresses one room and ends with a list summarizing what you can do to improve that room. The book contains numerous stories about houses triggered allergies of these sorts, why, and what can be done about it -- the presentation of these stories was too mellodramatic for my tastes, but the advice appears to be sound and well considered.

5 out of 5 stars excellent book.......2005-09-24

Jeffrey May is a clear, concise communicator. He offers specific, helpful information. Easy to read and useful.

5 out of 5 stars Good book, but magnesium supplementation also helps.......2005-05-27

This book is helpful in that the factors discussed in it can contribute to, and exacerbate, allergies and asthma. But there is significant evidence that the root cause of many, if not most, cases of asthma and allergies is deficiency of magnesium. This fact is discussed in detail by Dr. Carolyn Dean in her excellent book The Miracle of Magnesium. Dr. Dean recommends 600 mg of supplemental magnesium daily. People with asthma and/or allergies who follow Dr. Dean's advice about daily magnesium supplementation often improve dramatically even if they have continued to struggle with these ailments under other treatments which omit magnesium supplementation. If you are suffering from asthma or allergies please read Dr. Dean's excellent book and follow her advice regarding daily magnesium supplementation. It may well be the most important thing you will ever due to relieve these ailments. By the way, although a variety of magnesium supplements are available, and beneficial, chelated magnesium -- which is readily available in most health food stores -- is the most effective form.

5 out of 5 stars WOW !!! .......2004-11-20

If you own a house or plan to buy one in the future then this book is a MUST read. The author takes you through a list of things to watch out for, room by room, section by section.

Is it possible to find the perfect home? Perhaps not, but the author takes you through a list of common sense steps you can take to improve living arrangements for you and your family, especially if there is a family history of asthma or allergies.

If you buy this book, be warned, it is hard to put down. The author does an excellent job of providing details when needed, but keeps the story line moving and interesting.

5 out of 5 stars Church Hospitality Guide par excellence!.......2007-07-26

A very practical volume to help church leaders think about the "welcoming quotient" of their church. Topics include: how the building looks; the church sign; advertising; the appearance and content of church publications; development of a ministry of greeting (in the parking lot, at the door, in the pew, during worship, during other gatherings, etc.); crafting response cards and other welcoming materials (church "propaganda"); tracking and involving new members; structuring small groups for growth; surveys. All in all, a very comprehensive, practical, doable, measurable method for enhancing the hospitality of the church. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Putting the ANGEL back in ev-angel-ism.......2000-05-16

I am SO glad I found this little treasure. Our church worked hard to be a welcoming place for guests, visitors, folks looking for a spiritual home...but we had no growth. We are not a "pushy" congregation, but we had to ask ourselves, 'Were we really reaching-out to potential New Members?' Andrew Week's book was perfect -- relaxed, warm, funny and full of practical, common-sense advice for how to make new people feel "Special" when they visit our church...without feeling we are being too aggressive or intrusive. Our vestry has been able to unify and clarify our Welcoming Policies and we now have new members that I am sure, without the help of this guidebook, would have just "wandered off" after one visit without really giving us a chance. THANK YOU, MR. WEEKS!

5 out of 5 stars invaluable tool.......2007-03-08

Chuck has done a marvelous piece of work evaluating the processes of successful churches. It is an easy and enjoyable read. Personally used it for a small group discussion and also enjoyed giving it to a friend that is in the process of beginning a church. kudo's Chuck!!!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent -- Loaded WithHelpful Information!.......2006-06-28

This book is THE book to own for a pastor or church leader who needs a resource on new member classes. I've seen several approaches described in various places, but nothing until now that brings the numerous concepts together in one cover. In addition to sound advice in the narrative, there are 15 appendices that offer sample forms and outlines for nearly every step of the new member assimilation process.

Lawless has hit a "home run" here -- for me this title is a keeper!

5 out of 5 stars Insightful and practical.......2005-09-28

I've known Chuck since he was my grader in Thom Rainer's "Introduction to Church Growth" class at Southern Seminary in the Fall of 1995. During my own M.Div. and Ph.D. work, he became more than a grader. Chuck became my friend.

I'm currently serving as chairman of my home church's Long-range Planning Committee. One area in which we've identified a great need for improvement is in our new member orientation and current member commitment and service. I consider it providential that in researching books to aid in our task, I came across Lawless' work on those very subjects. I read "Membership Matters" over two days, taking copious notes in the margins and underlying liberally.

Few books address membership classes and church member assimilation. Thom Rainer's "High Expectations" called churches to ask more from members as a means of increasing church health and commitment. Lawless' book moves a step further by providing a practical guide for church pastors and leaders to design and implement membership classes, not only to better incorporate new members, but also to inspire older, non-serving members to get involved in ministry service.

Buy this book. Digest it. Discuss it. But more importantly, put its suggestions into practice.

Book Description

If you take a moment to think about all that God has told each believer to do, it is almost overwhelming: Go into all the world and preach the gospel, feed the poor, clothe the naked, visit the prisoner and so much more. However, these "works" are to be an outpouring of our relationship with Christ, not a replacement of our devotion and time with Him. That outpouring only comes through prayer.

Give Me 40 Days is a timeless and true devotional to help you put everything (marriage, family, ministry, finances, fears, hopes and dreams) into daily connection with Jesus. Of all the "things" you could do, Give Me 40 Days will convince you that above all else, Prayer is MORE Important. Open this book and let it change your life!

This book is a must read. It will change your prayer life. This book is filled with God's Word and will help you develop an intimate relationship with God.

5 out of 5 stars excellent book, don't let the boring title fool you.......2002-09-17

A very deep and insightful book. Just when you think you know so much, you will learn even more. More for the deeper, or wanting to get deeper type of believer.

5 out of 5 stars Give Me 40 Days.......2002-05-28

This was a life changing book for me. Freeda showed how the number 40 is used over 120 times in the Bible. It is a signifiant number on how God relates to humanity. Freeda shared her life-defining moment of crying out to God in frustration when God spoke back to her heart and said "Give me 40 Days" and now she invites everyone who wants to really learn how to pray to Give God 40 Days for themselves. I like the quick daily teachings, the starter prayers, encourageing quotes and the daily journal. This book helped me find a path through all of the problems I was dealing with.

It helped change my life and even better help me get closer to God.
