5 out of 5 stars An good introduction to Cultural Dimensions.......2005-06-30

Building and expanding on Hofstede's five dimensions of culture, Trompenaars and Hampden-Turner present a model of culture and cultural differences that is both sensible and eminently useful. While Hofstede may be the man who pioneered cultural research in management, Trompenaars and Hampden-Turner are the men who popularized it within the business world.

The six dimensions of culture proposed are simple to understand and relate to. With the numerous examples given throughout the book, cultural encounters suddenly make sense and previously taken for granted 'issues', annoyances, and differences when dealing with other cultures are explained and analyzed. While some of the six dimensions introduced are in some ways similar to Hofstede's, five cultural dimensions (for example individualism vs. communitarism); however, the authors also introduce additional dimensions and sometimes expand Hofstede's in ways that make it easier for the reader to understand the differences among cultures.

While many scholars claim that the authors' research is not rigorously scientific as that of Hofstede for example, however, it remains a landmark in the field of culture research in management. Perhaps more importantly, it is more accessible to managers and trainers due to the simplicity of the writing style and the numerous examples scattered throughout the book. Overall, a highly readable and useful book that should become essential reading for students of International Business.

For people in a hurry and looking for a 'tool box' for dealing with cultural differences; 'Riding the Waves of Culture' by the same authors may be a better option.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Read!.......2001-02-17

Don't be put off by this book's daunting terminology. Beneath the author's unrestrained use of labels like universalism, particularism, individualism, communitarianism, specificity and diffuseness, lies an insightful analysis of cultural differences. After defining various nationalities under a host of polysyllabic headings, authors Charles M. Hampden-Turner and Fons Trompenaars illustrate the differences between them using engaging and easy-to-understand scenarios and stories from popular culture. The end goal of each of these sections is to explain to international business managers how cultural dilemmas can be reconciled.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for multicultural managers.......2000-12-11

I have read this book 3 times only to find that the book is rich of information on how we can do business internationally. I am impressed by the comprehensiveness of the writers' survey which covers more than 40 thousand respondents from 50 different countries. The book also gives me new insights on how people of different values, norms and belief can reconcile the inherent cultural differences to build a dynamic relationship whithin a culturally diversed organisation. I recommend this book for managers and everybody who work in multinational business.

4 out of 5 stars Great resource!.......2007-05-26

I got this book for a speech-language pathology graduate course on multicultural issues in the field of Speech Path, but it is a truely great resource for anyone who is or will be working with different cultural backgrounds or anyone who is interested in learning more, maybe evwen about their own cultural background. I like that the book discusses traditions/beliefs of the different cultures both in the US and the other countries. Also, I was impressed by the number of different country cultures included and not just continental "cultures" all rolled into one.

4 out of 5 stars mixed feelings.......2007-02-23

honestly, this book is a bit dry. i use it for a Early Education Development class and i think it's more of a sociology book. it gets a bit repetitive and basically explains what is expected from the title. it just continually goes back to mention that after all the information given about different cultures, the importance of a caregiver being aware of social differences and emphasizes cultural competence when dealing with a child and their family. above all, this book is truly informational, especially from chapters 4 through 9 i think, when it gives a chapters worth of history each on different ethnic groups (african american, anglo-saxon/european, native american, latino, etc.). i suggest using this book for a sociology class or any class that deals with understanding different cultures.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Incredibly Valuable in my Corporate Culture!.......2007-07-30

I highly recommend this book by Dr. Hogan! I have been utilizing this book in my corporation for the past 8 years. It has proven to be of incredible value. It has facilitated team building, as well as great productivity among our teams. It also has provided an important resource for resolving problems in our corporate culture. All of the 4 skills are very important. Although, I posted a chart of Skill # 3 in my office: and this pie chart with the various qualities has proven to be very helpful at any given moment. There have been times (just in passing) where our Vice President and our President walked into my office, and were looking for an idea on how to effectively approach our current challenges. This pie chart (for skill three) has always had at least one (or more) recommended behaviors that became the perfect remedy to our challenging situation. Cultural Competency is what makes one internationally valuable in the global markets. This book has strengthened Cultural Competency in my teams in many, many different ways. This book will help anyone who truly puts it into practice with a good spirit. One of the many values of this book is in putting it into practice (daily). I especially like Dr. Hogan's common sense, her realism, as well as how she illustrates the need to practice Cultural Competency. This is a practical book that is more than theory, it gives one the "HOW TO", when it comes to being culturally competent. Cultural Competency is a skill that can always be refined, and Dr. Hogan's book effectively cultivates this continuous refinement.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding anthropological approach!.......2007-07-29

What I like about Hogan's four-skills model is the listing of actual culturally competent behaviors (and a self-test). The competency behaviors described in chapter 4 are the foundation for effective dialogue, conflict resolution, and problem-solving in culturally diverse settings.. Overall, a very empowering learning process! As an anthropologist and as an educator I have found Hogan's book to be holistic in its approach and pragmatic. I highly recommend this book!

1 out of 5 stars Wasted effort.......2002-01-23

Perhaps the author's intentions were in the right place but the final product is a confusing, pretentious mess. Written in such a way as to alienate almost everyone. Even one star is generous!!

3 out of 5 stars Not a stand-alone book.......2000-05-02

This seems like a really nice attempt to approach training in cultural diversity, but it's not a stand-alone publication. It apparently needs another book, which I have not been able to locate, that gives background to the worksheets that this book offers. An example is the first workssheet which refers to a paragraph in which you are to count the number of occurances of the letter "f". No where in this workbook is that paragraph presented.

It seems that with its companion book this might be a valuable resource, as a stand-alone publication this is confusing at best.

    Book Description

Why are cultural differences significant? How can understanding them contribute to business success?

Cross-cultural management is a crucial challenge for the successful development of international business, yet it is often badly understood and poorly implemented. Misunderstandings arise because culture affects both individuals and organizations, yet attempts to understand, explain and interpret these differences have often been hidden between a welter of conflicting theories and paradigms.

This book aims to provide much-needed guide to both the theory and practice of cross-cultural management. Using an innovative approach combining theory, tool-kits and applications, this book takes a fresh look at this complex topic. It is about recognizing cross-cultural differences, accounting for them in managerial communications and bridging them in a variety of negotiations.

Each section within the book explores its themes within a common framework, comprising an exploration of dominant and alternative theoretical approaches, a research-based tool-kit exploring responses, and finally a real-life case of a multicultural situation of clashing values with a critical description of an attempted solution. At the end of the book, the author has developed an innovative approach to teaching cultural sensitivity via exploration of a number of classic film masterpieces.

As a crucial part of the global business environment and as essential aspect of organizational understanding, this book will be welcomed by masters-level students of international business, HRM and organizational behavior, as well as executives and consultants involved in cross-border negotiations and management.

              Book Description

Building on their previous works about cultural competency in clinical areas and in psychotherapy, the editors have created in this volume an exceptional and entirely new approach to understanding and acquiring cultural competency. Instead of examining populations of different ethnic groups, particularly minority groups (as is typical in the literature), this illuminating volume examines cultural issues as applied to the practice of virtually every psychiatric service (e.g., inpatient, outpatient, consultation-liaison, pain management, and emergency) and specialty (e.g., child and adolescent, geriatric, addiction, and forensic psychiatry). Concluding chapters discuss cultural factors in psychopharmacology and psychotherapy. Thirteen distinguished contributors bring these issues to life with numerous case vignettes in all 11 chapters.

The foundation for this breakthrough approach rests on

Further, in the medical setting, three types of culture are present: the culture of the patient, the culture of the physician, and the medical culture in which the clinical work is practiced.
