Book Description

Why can't you remember where you put your keys? Or the title of the movie you saw last week? Or the name of your favorite restaurant?

Acclaimed journalist Cathryn Jakobson Ramin takes readers on a lively journey to explain what happens to memory and attention in middle age. Along the way, she turns up fresh scientific findings, explores the dark regions of the human brain, and hears the intimate confessions of high-functioning midlife adults who—like you—want to understand exactly what's going on upstairs.

Anyone older than forty knows that forgetfulness can be unnerving, frustrating, and sometimes terrifying. With compassion and humor, Jakobson Ramin sets out to discover what midlife forgetfulness is all about—from the perspectives of physiology, psychology, and sociology. Relentless in her search for answers to questions about her own unreliable memory, she explores the factors that determine how well—or poorly—one's brain will age. She consults experts in the fields of sleep, stress, traumatic brain injury, hormones, genetics, and dementia, as well as specialists in nutrition, cognitive psychology, and the burgeoning field of drug-based cognitive enhancement. The landscape of the midlife brain is not what you might think, and to understand its strengths and weaknesses turns out to be the best way to cope.

Jakobson Ramin's reporting of the stories of a wide array of midlife men and women will resonate with readers. Her audience will glean spectacular insight into how to elicit the very best performance from a middle-aged brain. A groundbreaking work that represents the best of narrative nonfiction, this is a timely, highly readable, and much-needed book for anyone whose memory is not what it used to be.

5 out of 5 stars I found the answer to my health problems.......2007-09-19

I read "Carved in Sand" book looking for answers to my frequent "young-senior" moments. This book is easy to read and full of information about the different issues related to memory loss. It is so interesting that you want keep reading it until reach the end. Cathryn Jakobson Ramin did extensive research with many scientists, physicians and mental health professionals bringing to light the reasons why some people lose memory when they reach mid-life.

Thanks to this book I found the answer to my other health problems that I have suffered with since I was 39 years old and the solution to helping me feel better. It was a light bulb moment for me. I recommend this book to everybody.

5 out of 5 stars Friends Lined Up.......2007-09-18

This book speaks to a fear many boomers silently suffer with--memory loss. We sort of expect the elderly to have memory problems, but its not supposed to bother the late middle-aged!!. As I told my friends about Ramin's exploration and her journey into the many experiences with and causes of faltering memory in middle age, my friends lined up for me to finish the book and loan it to them. This is a topic that is largely hidden and dealt with in silence. A welcome contribution to this field.

5 out of 5 stars At least I'm not alone.......2007-09-14

Entertaining and informative. packed with medical details, yet written in an entertaining and understandable way. It answered a lot of questions and cleared up a lot of misconceptions I had about Alzheimers. I also requested for a prescrition change.

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended.......2007-09-07

The big question for all of us in the middle age bracket is this: When we draw a blank when searching for a word or a person's name--is this normal forgetfulness or are we suffering from something much scarier? In this well-researched book, Cathryn Jakobson Ramin does an excellent job of presenting possible reasons for memory lapses and ways to deal with them.

In addition to having her brain and body tested for what might be the cause of her own memory lapses, the author interviewed many people and performed extensive research on the topic. She found that how you treat your brain in middle age will make a difference later. Midlife is the time to act: to make good decisions on diet, stress management, sleeping habits, and exercise.

She writes that today's world is an especially difficult time to reach middle age as we are "smack in the middle of a technological revolution." We can be overwhelmed by the amount of information available and the endless stream of interruptions, multitasking, and over stimulation.

In very readable prose, she explains how our minds are affected by the foods we consume, our hormones, the drugs we take, the chemicals in the environment, our sleep patterns, blood pressure and blood sugar levels, and the amount of exercise that we get. Since we need to build up our cognitive reserve to keep mentally active, she gives tips on how to perform these "intellectual push-ups."

In spite of the seriousness of the subject, this book is a pleasure to read and even funny at times.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent source.......2007-07-13

This book was an excellent source for education about the different types of memory problems which can occur as we age, which proved to be a lot more complicated than I had imagined. The author did an excellent job. It was easy to read and follow and well worth the read.

Book Description

For centuries, adventurers and scientists have believed that not only could we delay death but that "practical immortality" was within our reach.Today, many well-respected researchers would be inclined to agree. In a book that is not about anti-aging, but about functional aging--extending your healthy, active life--Dr. Sanjay Gupta blends together compelling stories of the most up-to-date scientific breakthroughs from around the world, with cutting-edge research and advice on achieving practical immortality in this lifetime. Gupta's advice is often counterintuitive: longevity is not about eating well, but about eating less; nutritional supplements are a waste of your money; eating chocolate and drinking coffee can make you healthier.CHASING LIFE tells the stories behind the breakthroughs while also revealing the practical steps readers can take to help extend youth and life far longer than ever thought possible.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Not enough substance.......2007-08-28

I was not impressed by Chasing Life. Within the topics it covers (exercise, eating, supplements, memory, attitude, and the future) the practical information and suggestions offered were quite basic. The book focused more time than I would have prefered on how future technologies could extend life. This book is not for people wanting an in depth look into physiology of aging, or a comprehensive approach on how to combat it.
Stylistically ideas and sentances throughout the book seem fragmented. It's an easy read that touches on a few ways to improve your health, with a light conversational tone and lots of stories about the people Dr. Gupta meet during his research of this book.

3 out of 5 stars A Basic Primer for Longevity.......2007-08-22

I found this book a somewhat frustrating read. At times it seems as if it were written strictly for a tv audience, with the content skirting over issues in a glib and lackadaisical tone. It does mention early on that a companion tv series is in the works, and I got the impression that the book is a sort of script for the tv program. There is also some very poor writing, which at times made me feel that Dr. Gupta should have spent more time chasing editors instead of chasing life.

There is a lot of good basic longevity information but nothing that has not been revealed elsewhere. There are some gems in here, like the very clear explanation on what happens in cells to promote the aging process. At the same time, Gupta covers a lot areas that are still very speculative but doesn't tell you that until after you've read the few paragraphs or pages on that topic. This habit starts with the introduction, where he talks extensively about stem cell injections currently occuring in Russia, only to end the section by saying, essentially, "we're not there yet but there's a lot of other good stuff in my book you can follow".

The meat in this book is located at the end of each chapter where Gupta lists the top tips for that section to promote longevity. Again, most of these are not anything new, but each page could be a handy reference (for the rest of us) to help us establish new, longevity promoting habits.

In sum, the book is a good primer on longevity but takes too many detours in speculative areas and can sometimes jar you with its poor writing.

1 out of 5 stars Too New Agey and Vapid.......2007-08-05

This book really disappointed me. I thought Gupta would stick to more hardcore empirical science. Instead, this book covers a lot of questionable territory. In several chapters, Gupta sounds more like Ram Das than an actual physician. Other parts of the book, like his discourse on stress and immunity are just plain factually incorrect. Gupta leaves out whole areas of research and new discoveries, especially those at MIT. If you like this topic, stick with the other new age authors. Gupta is a weak imitator of those before him.

3 out of 5 stars Not for Physicians.......2007-07-11

This book is more suited for lay persons than physicians, although the occasional medical insight was informative.

5 out of 5 stars Now I know why........2007-06-17

This book has been very useful and clarifying to me. For instance, I had read that fat around the abdomen could indicate future heart problems, but Dr. Gupta explains it in a more convincing way, I mean, now I can choose between being sick and chasing life. Though I had known quite a lot about health, what is good or bad for me, I wasn't able to convince myself that I should lose weight, exercise more and take care of me, things that everybody knows they should be doing, but many don't do. With lots of information on health and more importantly, on what we can do to be healthy, the book is easy to read and understand and at the same time, enjoyable.
It has given me insight into how I can chase life, and also hope that it's still not too late to start all over again. Who knows I can even run a 5k some day? Positively, it is one of my reference books!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent holistic blueprint for health & longevity ...........2007-10-03

Dr. Plasker presents a compelling blueprint for a hundred year lifestyle. Whether or not you seriously have a shot at living to be a centenarian, his advice here on health, diet, fitness and emotional/spiritual well-being makes eminent sense. It is truly a holistic approach to lifestyle and longevity that has merit. Making the book more practical is the fact that it has a number of checklists and each chapter closes with a list of action items for the reader to take. The latter underscores the point that merely reading a book will not improve your lifestyle unless you follow through, act and execute upon it.

Since Dr Plasker himself is a chiropractor, there is a pitch for preventative chiropractic care. His plea here is not over-the-top or in-your-face, however, and is probably well founded.

The author's point is that many lifestyle changes can produce long-term positive results. In many cases, though perhaps not all, certain types of illness are products of lifestyle and tiny diet and fitness decisions made over the course of months and years. Making better fitness and health decisions every day can put extra years in your life and life in your years.

5 out of 5 stars Give It Away.......2007-08-18

Every once in a while a book comes along that is so good that I buy a couple of dozen to distribute to friends and loved ones. This book joins that very exclusive club (FYI my other two frequent giveaways are Dr Judith Orloff's Positive Energy: 10 Extraordinary Prescriptions for Transforming Fatigue, Stress, and Fear into Vibrance, Strength, and Love and Cheryl Richardson's The Unmistakable Touch of Grace: How to Recognize and Respond to the Spiritual Signposts in Your Life). This book is that great.

Dr. Eric Plasker has written one of the most powerful health books ever. The power lies in stretching our thinking by making clear that medical science has evolved to the point that living to one hundred has become a realistic possibility, as is having much improved vitality to whatever age we live. Dr. Plasker offers no silver bullets (thankfully!), just a great collection of proven things that we must personally manage if we are to avoid the life threatening stresses that come with the common overindulgent life style.

Many of the points raised by Dr. Plasker are treated at a summary level such that one's health philosophy and strategy must be supplemented by other resources (a point Plasker implicitly acknowledges by his inclusion of a thoughtful resource list at the end of the book). The need to supplement is not to suggest an absence of depth, but instead to suggest that the strength of the book lies in the presentation of a well thought-out, broad based platform for good health.

The true power of this gem is the clarity of the message that we may well live longer than we might think and that we need to manage the totality of our existence so as to maximize the likelihood that our remaining years are healthier. Clearly, other books have made a similar point but none which I have read have gone so far as to suggest things like a 100 year mastermind group (do you belong to such a group [yet]?).

Other reviewers have suggested multiple readings, family readings, etc. They are right on. This book is of the quality to serve as a guidebook for a better life. A guidebook that should be frequently referenced.

Dr. Plasker, you have made a great contribution to mankind with this book. You have done your part. We now have to get the book in the hands of more people, and serve as a personal role model for living the 100 year lifestyle. I, for one, am committed to doing my part.

5 out of 5 stars Living your best life now and years to come.......2007-07-23

Dr. Plasker shows you step by step how to live healthy and plan for your future. The steps are easy. Put these principles in action today and watch your life increase.

5 out of 5 stars great read for all!.......2007-05-24

this is the best book on health and wellness I have seen in a long time. The focus on how to live a healthy drug free life and stay fit is presented clearly and simply.

5 out of 5 stars Douglas Ferguson D.C........2007-05-21

Doctor Plasker's vision for us serves both myself, my family and my patients with a wake up call that even though we may not look forward to it, we could actually live well into ten decades! With my background in the emergency services, I was a Fire Captain and a paramedic, I saw first hand what goes down when people don't live life like they are going to make it to 100. Often on emergency calls to private homes we would have the family get a grocery bag to put all the drugs in because their dying family member was taking so many it was impossible to figure out which one might have contributed positively or negatively to the health crisis that prompted the 911 call. For these people it was mostly too late to change their health habits. Doctor Plasker lays it out step-by-step how you can change your health habits right now to avoid the pitfalls that plague so many in the older generation. Read the book and join us! See you on the beaches!

The book is interesting, good advice and easy to follow the instructions. I have been regularly going to the gym since I was 17 years old, now I am 79 and with an estimated age between 71 to 73. The exercises and texts in this book have been in my routine, plus some advice from Reail Age page many years ago.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for total Health.......2007-09-01

This book along with my Doctor saved my life! My total cholesterol was 293 and it is now at 152. My triglyceride level went from 625 down to 230 and is still improving. The quiz section in this book is right on. It fit myself and my sister to a "T". If you are serious about feeling younger and improving your all around health this is the book.Check out the "Younger You" book also.

5 out of 5 stars Made a huge difference in my health.......2007-05-22

I found this book easy to read even though I didn't choose to slog through it all. The diagnostic questionnaires are understandable and simple to use.

Like "A Reader," I thought Braverman was recommending a lot of pills and I've been trying to REDUCE my supplements. But I felt ill enough (and monied enough) to try his regimen. Within a week I felt more cheerful, alert, resilient, and relaxed--a remarkable combination of effects. I've been sleeping well and waking up refreshed. My knees and hips don't ache. It's pretty amazing.

I wish I'd had access to this information when I was struggling with clinical depression several years ago. It might have helped me avoid taking some or all of the pharmaceuticals that kept me afloat.

While this approach may not be everyone's cup of tea, the book is certainly worth reading. If you've read far enough to get to this/my review, I'd suggest that you read it: The Universe may be trying to tell you something...

5 out of 5 stars The Edge Effect: Achieve Total Health and Longevity with the Balanced Brain Advantage.......2007-02-28

Very informative and easy to read. Gets you up to date on the latest research in brain chemistry and it's effect upon body, mind and spirit. I found it iteresting, useful and uplifiting in terms of explaining behavioral psychology in a new light. I'd recommend this book to anyone looking for a cause of unexplained health or behavior problems.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2007-02-14

This is a very excellent book for those of you out there looking for the next level of achieving optimal health. It is easy to read and understand. It contains a questionaire that helps you to zero in on your needs for specific amino acids. Highly recommended!

4 out of 5 stars Early take on personality/neurotransmitter/supplement connections.......2007-01-11

The connection between personality and mood on the one side and neurotransmitters on the other side is a young subject.
This book is definitely worth owning and reading to get some basic popular orientation in the field, to play with the questionaire and to experiment with medication or alternative supplements to balance your own mood states. It is very readable.
- It is not an in-depth treatment, the last word on the subject or your essential reference tome.

Words of caution: it's important to remember that the health of other organ systems also impacts mood and personality. Not to mention life events! We are not just wandering brain chemistries ...
The supplements suggested are very high. I have effects with about 1/10 of the dosages recommended in the book, and at about 1/6 of recommended dose I start to get overdose symptoms - so get professional advice about dosage (and a general health overview if you don't already have one) if you decide to try the supplements.
The author also has a website and an organisation that sells supplements and is good about giving advice on email exchanges.

4 out of 5 stars Baby Boomer Transition Manual.......2007-02-13

This book is a must read for any baby-boomer actively planning the "second career" phase of their life. Full of thought-provoking questions on career moves, health, learning and loving. Engaging prose and an easy-to-read style.

4 out of 5 stars Encouragement for those post-retirement years..........2007-01-11

All too often the thought of "retirement" brings to mind growing old, playing cards, and sitting around waiting to die. But it doesn't have to be that way, nor should it. In The Power Years: A User's Guide to the Rest of Your Life by Ken Dychtwald, Ph. D. and Daniel J. Kadlec, you'll see how you can actually look forward to this time of less responsibility and more time to enjoy life.

Contents: Welcome to the Power Years; New Ways to Have Fun; Rediscovering and Forging Vital Relationships; Creating Your New Dream Job; Lifelong Learning Adventures; Where and How to Live; Achieving Financial Freedom; Leaving a Legacy; Author's Note; Notes; Index

Dychtwald and Kadlec explore the time of your life between 55-ish and beyond, referred to as the "Power Years". The kids are out of the house, retirement is looming, and you no longer have the daily demands on your time and attention that you had in your 30s and 40s. Instead of looking at this time period as one of "checking out" and rocking on the porch, they advocate a complete mental shift. You can now explore parts of your personality and interests that were logistically difficult before. Maybe it's going back to school or taking a few classes in an area that interests you. It could be travel or house-swapping with someone else in order to see other parts of the country or world. It may even involve the continuation of your working efforts. But the thought is that you can either work at something else without the demands of advancement, or you can continue what you currently do because you have a passion for it. The key is being able to do something that you *want* to do, not that you *have* to do.

Most of the approaches in the book work much better if you've been planning financially for your power years. If you get to 65 with nothing but Social Security, your options are limited to a degree. But that doesn't mean that you can't volunteer your time to a cause that sparks your interest, nor does it mean you can't start exploring relationships that you've not had time for in the past. In some cases it might be easier said than done, but it's still a choice. The best time to get ahold of this book would be when you're in your late 30s or early 40s, and you have time to plan for the future you want (instead of the future that just happens).

I'll admit there were a few times I sorta wished I could fast-forward my life and get to the power years a bit sooner. But I'm much more encouraged now that my power years will be valuable and full, and not just marking time until the obituary gets written up...

4 out of 5 stars What to do with the rest of my life?.......2006-07-30

Yes, I'm one of those baby-boomers contemplating moving into the "third-age" - when the kids have left the nest, the mortgage is paid off, the college accounts have been funded, the husband is semi-retired, but I'm still working, contributing the max to the 401K, and starting to wonder "what next"? No more ladders to climb career-wise, finally the time to think about pursuing hobbies, traveling and the freedom to "re-invent" myself. But, as what? I still haven't figured that out, but I'm sure it will evolve over time. The answers weren't laid out in the book, however, it definitely gave food for thought, and it is a good starting place for those contemplating such a life passage.

Much of the content of Dychtwald's book validated what I already knew about the "third-age" - we'll be living longer and healthier, we'll have new freedoms, we'll have clout in the marketplace (as members of the largest population bubble - the boomers), we'll be open to change, we can't depend on Social Security, etc. Some of the chapters gave me something to look forward to "See, Feel, Taste and Touch the World", "Lifelong Learning Adventures". The chapter on "Achieving Financial Freedom" wasn't particularly helpful, but maybe that's because I've already spent a considerable amount of time researching and considering that topic already.

If you're entering your "Power Years", hoping to rediscover life's purposes, find a balance between work and leisure, find new interests, leave a legacy or any of the latent desires and wishes we hold for our later years, the book is a good primer, will provide plenty of food for thought and ideas, and will kick-start your journey into the "power years".

4 out of 5 stars Spotlight On Boomer Retirement Issues.......2006-05-17

I was given this book as a gift, and really didn't know what to expect. The book focuses on the issues facing baby boomers in all facets of their lives, and particularly stresses educational and volunteering opportunities, employment after retirement, and longer life expectancy issues, which of course in turn leads to a discussion of financial planning.

The book is generally good, although a lot of the subject matter is common knowledge (people are living longer, Social Security is in a financial pit, etc.), it does seamlessly blend the social and societal impacts of longer life with the financial issues involved. Although I don't agree with the authors on everything, their points are well taken and worth listening to.

The book is very good at citing websites that contain much valuable information for people interested in business and retirement related lifestyle changes, and is especially strong with the theme of education. Chapter seven concerns financial planning and is a good, but very general overview. If you really want to understand this subject, you will need to buy a separate book. I also urge readers to be very cautious about the recommendations the authors make regarding annuities.

I was born in late 1964, so demographically I get lumped in with the baby boom generation. The friend that gave me this book was also born in 1964, and while we both are technically baby boomers, we both identify far more with the succeeding generation. One of the detractors of this book (and indeed some other books that I have read by boomers) is an occasional smugness about being a boomer. I noted that tendency a couple of times early in the book, but I was pleased when near the end of the book the authors made the following statement during a discussion of volunteerism and legacy: "Unless you find ways to give something back and keep contributing in your later years, you will help cement our generation's reputation as a bunch of narcissists." I was glad that the authors frankly acknowledged this perception, which while it is not applicable to all boomers of course, is widely held, especially by younger generations.

This book is a good summary of some demographic trends in American (and world) population, notably the trend toward working in retirement. The book does offer some insight into the future, but offers no specific planning advice for an individual. The strength of this book is in the resources it points out, most of which are available on the Internet, and in getting the reader to think in unconventional ways about retirement. This book is an interesting place to start, but it must be viewed as just that: a starting point on the map to retirement.

1 out of 5 stars Wrong direction for the rest of your life.......2006-03-29

This guy is totally out of touch with reality. He is trying to rewrite reality so that the we give HIM power through the money he hopes we will spend on his book. Don't make the mistake of buying this book and don't make the huge mistake of following what he writes. There is no need for power in life. Especially at our ages. We need peace and happiness. We can get this by a walk in the woods. Don't loose the rest of your life by running after happiness where it is not. Happiness is inside yourself, try to find it before looking elsewhere. It will not come from anywhere or anybody else. Get peace with yourself instead of creating chaos.

All chapters are poorly written with bad advices.

Menopause is a complicated business. Medical issues vary widely and treatment options seem endless--especially in the wake of bad news about hormone replacement. While The Sexy Years isn't meant to supply you with a specific program of daily supplements, Suzanne Somers does offer an excellent inspiration to march forth and take control of this stage of health. Much of the book covers her own experience of menopause, including some detail on her breast cancer ordeal. She advocates the use of natural, bioidentical hormonal replacement, available through a variety of creams and supplements--it's a rare page that doesn't gush about the power of these substances or raise negative issues about the use of synthetic hormones. Introductory medical information is included on how estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone work together to keep people healthy and active; the vocabulary is understandable and generally entertaining rather than overwhelming. She provides interviews with a variety of doctors and women in various stages of menopause. These will give women a good place to start with topics to address with their own medical providers. While a short index of doctors and compounding pharmacies is provided, most women will have to do their own research to find local natural hormone specialists. But if you're looking for a boost of courage to bring up these treatments with your doctor--or simply want to investigate more natural alternatives to the standard synthetics--this is a fine place to get started. --Jill Lightner

Book Description

Getting older can be brutal—women gain weight, lose their sex drive, experience hot flashes, suffer memory loss, become short-tempered, find it difficult to sleep, and on and on. It’s not so easy for men, either—they start to lose energy and stamina as they age, too (and they have to live with women going through menopause). After years of being thin and fit and full of energy, Suzanne herself encountered the “Seven Dwarfs of Menopause”—Itchy, Bitchy, Sweaty, Sleepy, Bloated, Forgetful, and All-Dried-Up. Instead of living out the rest of her life cranky, sleep-deprived, and libido-less, Suzanne set out to discover how she could get her mind, body, and life back and banish those pesky dwarfs for good.

The result is The Sexy Years: Discover the Hormone Connection—The Secret to Fabulous Sex, Great Health, and Vitality, for Women and Men. In this passionately argued and enormously practical book, Suzanne supports her own research and experiences with the expertise of leading doctors in the field of women’s and men’s health and sexuality to create an inspiring, accessible call-to-arms to women to radically rethink how they approach life after fifty, and give them the tools to turn their lives around.

Suzanne has discovered that the second half of life has been more rewarding, fun, and purposeful than her younger years. The key to her happiness? Taking natural bioidentical hormones. Natural hormones, which mimic the hormones produced in our own bodies that are almost completely lost with aging, are the answer to the symptoms of menopause that plague women. Recent findings from the medical community show that synthetic hormone replacement therapy
(HRT) may be harmful to women—thus, thousands of women are looking for what else they can do to alleviate their symptoms. In The Sexy Years, Suzanne comes to the rescue with a step-by-step plan and detailed information about how women can take control of their health, for themselves and for their men, including:

• What the differences are between synthetic and bioidentical hormones, and why bioidentical hormones help women lose weight, reinvigorate their sex lives, and fight the symptoms of aging
• How doctors do not receive adequate training about hormones and are slaves to the pharmaceutical industry, and what questions every woman must ask her physician about hormone replacement therapy and her health
• How Suzanne turned her life around, with information about how often she visits her doctor, blood work, what hormones she takes, how to get these hormones, and more
• What male menopause, or andropause, is and how men can also take bioidentical hormones and regain the energy they had in their youth
• What a variety of specialists think about natural hormones, health, and sexuality—Suzanne shares the best advice from these doctors and provides a resource list of physicians and pharmacies

With bioidentical hormone replacement therapy, Suzanne has found the fountain of youth, the elixir that has made her feel thirty years old again. In combination with her Somersize diet and fitness plan, which she also writes about here, Suzanne has never felt better. The beauty of growing older, she maintains, is that you can combine the wisdom of age with the vitality of youth. Suzanne makes it perfectly clear how women and men can regain their zest for life at any age. These really are the sexy years!

5 out of 5 stars Empowering and Informative.......2007-08-04

After visiting doctors about my new (and related) health issues and becoming more confused and scared than ever, this book has helped me understand that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. It's a load off my mind just knowing that these issues can be resolved, and that I will be healthy again. But, as said in this book, finding the right doctor (for you) is key. I believe that my mother experienced the very same issues that I am now beginning to experience, only she didn't have resources like this book to help her. She showed the classic signs of estrogen dominance and it sadly affected her quality of life, too. I now understand exactly how dangerous this is for women, and am taking actions to resolve this situation for myself. I am empowered and informed. Thank you, Suzanne.

3 out of 5 stars It changed my life.......2007-05-08

I tried to follow the advice of this book and ended up in the hospital for a week with near fatal blood clots. The blood clots were not hereditary; they were due to an increase in Estrogen according to my blood tests. While I believe that for a number of woman this book is right on track, it does not do nearly a good enough job of warning women about potentially life ending or life threatening side effects. If you follow the advice of this book, you should research the downside and monitor your health constantly. In my case, my calves hurt (and not much); fortunately, my traditional doctor caught that this was a sign of blood clots whereas my new doctor didn't.

5 out of 5 stars Your Personal AgePrint.......2007-09-19

A few years ago I read The Edge Effect and got impressed with the work of Dr Braverman. Now in "Younger You" I found even more evidence that feeling younger... and getting younger is a feasible option for just about everyone. Each of us can reach for a longer and healthier old age by applying what Dr Braverman outlines in such eloquent way.
The AgePrint worksheet in this book is incredible useful and directs you immediately to the core problems or pauses you may have in aging. To go beyond what is in the book, I found it useful to download the more elaborate AgePrint Worksheet from www.pathmed.com.
Reading this book made me feel younger and has changed my priorities!

This book is a complement to the Edge Effect. If you want to feel better, look better and increase you health, this book along with a good doctor will make it happen. Don't forget you have to also give 100%. It will happen as I am living proof.

As the majority of our society strives to keep going and not allow age to slow them down-The Younger You shows in detail how to feel and look years younger with simple and healthy tips from the inside out.

1 out of 5 stars Greatly Disappointed.......2007-07-03

I found this book to be not much more than an informercial, filled with dubious "science" and endless recounting of patient testimonials. The basic concept of eating a rainbow diet is good, but you don't need to buy this book to know that.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous!.......2007-03-25

Without a doubt the most comprehensive book I've found on the holistic practice of medicine. And this book IS about medicine, AND a wholesome "Rainbow Diet", as he calls it (but varied according to your particular malady), AND the use of the far superior bioidentical hormones, AND most important of all, the connection and absolute interdependency of brain and body! There's probably very little in this book that your own various physicians don't already know, but the organization and application of the knowledge certainly appear to me to be a completely different and a far more effective concept. However, it sort of excludes all the specialists. Or so they would probably think. Only GPs need apply. And Oh, if we only had more GPs like this Dr. Eric Braverman! When was the last time your GP ordered blood work to determine ALL of your hormone levels? And what physician does NOT know the importance of adequate and balanced hormones in each patient? The nephrologists will think, "That's not my problem". The orthopedists will think, "That's not my problem". Even the cardiologists will probably think, "That's not my problem." WRONG! And if you ask about vitamin therapy they usually say, "There are plenty of good multivitamins over the counter, by all means it can't hurt for you to try one". And if you ask about herbs? Go on; just ask your doctor what herbs would help your condition. He'll probably act like herbs are either some kind of voodoo, or are totally insignificant. WRONG AGAIN! Dr. Braverman said so. READ IT. You'll like it. It addresses ANY condition you could possibly have, and plenty that you didn't even know that you have. I'm serious. This is preventive medicine at it's best. And it just MIGHT lead you to a much healthier, happier, more productive AND longer life. It can't get much better than that!

Few books manage to balance practical suggestions and loving sympathy as well as Talking to Alzheimer's, a concise and comprehensive guide to communication with both paid caregivers and their patients. While the title suggests focus on a specific disease, the recommendations are appropriate for any family struggling with serious communication issues, whether those issues are the result of stroke, surgery, disease, or an accident.

Much of the book discusses methods of easing conversation during visits, as well as ways to manage the emotions that can surface in difficult times. From asking open-ended questions like, "How did your day go?" to gently reintroducing yourself to lifelong friends, the pointers here are written with kindness, and they focus on maintaining dignity for all involved. Short sections include tips on involving children in your visits and a welcome list of resources that spans organizations, Web sites, and additional books; this straightforward advice even includes expected response time to Web site inquiries. Instead of an index, you'll find a list of topics, so you can find immediate answers on "ending a conversation" and "when to insist."

One lengthy chapter covers the heartbreakers, such as dealing with refusals to eat or listening to tearful requests to be taken home. Author Claudia Strauss acknowledges the difficulty of these situations honestly, while at the same time providing simple words that can help diffuse the issues and open the path for joyful visits that benefit everyone involved. --Jill Lightner

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2007-09-07

Such a positive approach. This book really helped me connect with my mother who has alzheimer's and is in a nursing home. I felt that I was making her more comfortable with our visits and not as confused. Thank you, Claudia J. Strauss for your helpful suggestions.

2 out of 5 stars Not relevant enough.......2007-04-14

This book is basically a "feel good" book and doesn't address the grittiness of dementia/alzheimer disease. There are many of us whose loved ones/friends have become extremely hateful and vitriolic, and this book does nothing to give us some glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel. "The 36-hour Day" is a much better and more comprehensive book.

4 out of 5 stars Too much focus on what NOT to do.......2007-01-03

There are not a lot of books out there that even attempt to help people learn how to talk to a person with Alzheimers. I was very happy to find this book at all since I have just begun working at a day center program for persons with Alzheimers and dementia. This book is full of practical advice on the many ways and reasons we talk to persons with dementia and in that way, the book is extremely valuable. However, the overall emphasis of the examples is on what NOT to do, which is very frustrating. One of the reasons people seek out such a book in the first place is that they have already had some communicative breakdown and they are looking for ways to fix it, not more lists of what not to do. We already know what doesn't work. We want to know what does work. That said, please know that there is a wonderful small section with a parallel list of Don'ts and Do's near the end of the book. That section is worth looking at.

5 out of 5 stars A how to "Talking to Alzheimer"guide.......2006-08-06

I first saw this book in the waiting room of a Dr. my mother was meeting with. I didn't have too much time to get into it then so I purchased it later and what a tremendous book, so easy to read and it had situations I am currenlty dealing with and the appropriate responses. I took it to my support group for caregivers and shared it with the group, some were going to purchase the next day. My thanks to Claudia Strauss for writing it!!

5 out of 5 stars One of my "Must" readings for caregivers.......2006-04-16

Dementia a disease that knows no boundaries. It is blind to the categories in which we usually place our fellow human beings. It can occur at the age of 55 or 85. It can happen to Blacks, Whites, Hispanics, Asians, Jews, Christians, Muslims, males and females, rich and poor. It has not spared ex-presidents. I speak from personal experience. Dementia did not spare my mother whose 15 year journey into the opaque fog of this disease is told in my own recently published book. Tears are shed by husbands and wives, sons and daughters, brothers and sisters-in fact anyone responsible for the care of a loved one with dementia. TALKING TO ALZHEIMER'S will help all such caregivers to cope.

5 out of 5 stars Well-written and easy to follow.......2007-05-19

The book may have been written 5 years ago but the principles of investing still apply today. The book is detailed, easy to follow and a worthy read. Anyone interested in retiring will benefit from reading this book. I am using the book to make sure that I am ready when retirement age catches up with me.

1 out of 5 stars Much Information is very out of date / no longer accurate.......2007-04-22

Much of the information is out-dated. Many of the financial products referred to have changed alot over the years. This is true particulary about Variable Universal Life Insurance, as well as Variable Annuities. These products have greatly improved over the last 5 years, and much of the information in this book does not apply to the newer products.

The author is not licensed for insurance, not securities licensed, not an investment advisor, and is not a CFP. Therefore she does not have any clients. People who just write books can write almost whatever they want, and are not held to the same standards as licensed professionals. You should be careful of the advice you get from people who only make a living by writing books and articles, and are not licensed professionals.

1 out of 5 stars DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME !!.......2006-08-08

Out of date and poorly written. Might be suited for a middle school class.

3 out of 5 stars A bit out of date but useful for basic info........2006-07-15

Good basic information on various financial topics such as bonds, equities, 401k, pension, etc. But examples provided are out of date.

4 out of 5 stars Information I could understand.......2006-06-28

Lynn O'Shaughnessy's book Retirement Bible was informative and helpful as I plan for my retirement. It was in a format that even I could understand. I appreciated her help on buyer beware. I will probably hire a good financial advisor to assist and this book has educated me, so when I do interview advisors I hope they will be ready for all my questions.
