Straightforward.......2007-09-23
This is a very easy to follow guide to wood frame construction. I recommend it as a basic reference.
Excellent Resource for Wood Frame Construction.......2007-05-31
This is a wonderful book to have on the reference shelf. It answers so many questions about wood frame construction in a clear manner with great graphic depictions.
Invaluable for Anyone Who Wants to Build.......2007-04-09
I am a beginning amateur builder of outbuildings on my property, and this book is wonderful. Easy to understand, the pictures are very descriptive. It is all I need. I gave a beat-up copy (after ordering another for myself) to a friend who just got his contractor's license and the next day he acted as though I'd given him gold. I recommend getting the spiral bound version - so much easier to use on the job site. This book cannot be rated high enough.
Good graphic presentaion of wood frame construction.......2007-03-17
This book is a good tool for anyone, do-it-yourselfer or not, to grasp how North American homes are put together. An excellent tool to learn the nomenclature of houses and house construction. I missed a discussion of the the reasons for and the pros and cons of the various methods. On the other hand, the lack of text is a strongpoint of this book, at least for those who want to quickly get up to speed on home construction.
Graphic Guide to Frame Construction: Details for Builders and Designers (For Pros by Pros).......2007-01-11
great book. Recommend it to anyone how would like to learn about framing.

A must read for construction people........2005-08-10
This is an excellent book that covers all aspects of building construction. The layout and content of the book are designed for easy reference and reading. A must for those who plan to take the Virginia Contractor's license exams.
Book Description
Tree houses capture the imagination of the child in all of us, and they have never been more popular than they are today. This inspirational yet thoroughly practical guide shows even the most inexperienced weekend carpenter how to design and build a lifetime of memories for the entire family. With more than 200,000 copies of their popular Weekend Project Books sold, David and Jeanie Stiles have become America's First Couple of do-it-yourself woodworking. In Tree Houses You Can Actually Build, they explain basic building procedures through clear, simple instructions and non-technical line drawings that illustrate every step of the project, from the earliest sketches to the final cedar shingle. The authors outline five basic designs that can be adapted to virtually any set of conditions, and throughout the book, they emphasize safety for both adults and children. In addition to line drawings, the book contains a section of full-color photographs highlighting a variety of tree house projects, plus helpful building tips based on interviews with their owners.
Customer Reviews:
Lively little sketch book, very conversational.......2007-07-27
Works for kids, works for adults, very clear and very helpful. Very graphics oriented and the sketches make the text very clear.
Unfortunately does not even mention escalating tree houses beyond the backyard project - if this were a full-revalation book, you would see the new engineering miracle, the Garnier Limb.
We were quite pleased - PS we are hard graders, hardly anything gets a 5.
Title for Tree Houses You can Actually Build.......2007-06-01
I think you have to be a master carpenter to actually do any of them in a week-end but the detail is pretty good.....odd thing is, I bought this book and already had it at home! I must have really liked it!
To find the kids, look up.......2007-05-21
Color pictures of some fantastic tree house ideas. No limits on imagination here. One caution: Don't let the kids see it first! Can't wait to start one of these ideas.
Great Help!!.......2007-05-08
Excellent guide for treehouse construction. We used the book as a basis for our treehouse and modified one of the designs. This book was extremely valuable for us and guided us through alot of potential pitfalls. Highly recommend!
you CAN actually build one of these!.......2007-05-06
What a fantastic book! My kids and I have had so much fun browsing through and getting ideas for their tree house. From the basic tree house to more elaborate designs, it's in here. With the help of this book, you can actually build one affordably.

The common and sensible dictum among carpenters--"Measure twice, cut once"--is only the beginning for Carroll, who manages to take some very complex information and distill it into readable and understandable form. There are chapters devoted to laying out foundations, frames, roofs, stairs, masonry units, and finishing materials, and many little-known tricks of the trade and shortcuts. Carroll covers all the basics of tools and techniques, shows how to measure larger dimensions on projects while working alone, and shows that one needn't be a master mathematician to assure accuracy in projects, nor use space-age, high-tech equipment to achieve near-perfect results in a building project. From the simplest how-to project for a home handyperson to constructing an entire house, proper, accurate measurements are the very foundation of a successful result. Using common sense and care in measuring can save time, materials, and money on any home repair or construction plan. This is the book to tell you everything you need to know before you get started. --Mark A. Hetts

Worth a Truck Load of Tolls.......2007-07-19
This is probably the most important book I own in my "how to build it" arsenal.
Elementary .......2007-04-07
I was disappointed to say the least by this book. As a contractor with over thirty years of experience, I should have known I knew more. There are also some rather out-dated building practices put forth in this book. So, I would say, if you are already a pro, don't buy this book. If you are a DIY'er go fer it, or if you live somewhere they don't have building codes, yahoo. This book was clearly written for the less experienced builder.
for the pro's by the pro's!.......2007-04-05
I'm so glad I purchased this book, what a blessing! My wife and I are planning to build our dream home next year and the amount of detail for this type of project is NOT to be underestimated. This book covers the "how to" in great detail and shows the "tricks of the trade". I especially like the technique's for when your working alone (I always knew there was a better way, now I know). If your a "SKILLED" do-it-yourselfer but lack professional training then this book is definitely for you. I wish I had this book years ago it would have saved me a lot of time and headache. Also the price is right and you will start to get results like the pro's.
good reference book.......2006-03-18
author goes into a lot of detail...i learned a lot from this book
Over 20 Years In The Trade, I Still Learned A Thing Or Two........2005-11-28
I read this book thinking I might find something interesting. I was not disappointed. The book has historical commentary and personal experiences that are interesting. Old timer's secrets of layout, very cool. Geometrical calculations are easier to understand when you can see how they are to be applied. The formulas used in the book are reasonably simple. Most importantly, when there is a shortcut, it's shown in this book. From the ground to the roof, and all in between, there's detailed(but basic, no really fancy decorative work) explanation and excellent illustration. Handrails, masonry units, roofing, the book shows where to start and what to do next. He shows how to build many of the jigs and measuring/marking secrets that I use regularly. I don't do everything exactly as he does, but everybody has their own way of doing things. If this guy writes any more books, I and many of my competitors may not be needed any more. MANY secrets of the trade.
HEY! DON'T BUY THIS BOOK!! SOMEBODY STOP THIS GUY!!! I GOT KIDS TO FEED!! YA' CAN'T JUST GO AROUND INSPIRING CONFIDENCE IN THE AVERAGE HOMEOWNER! WHAT ARE YOU DOING? (gasp!) You might even make my competitors more competitive! Horrible book! I'm keeping mine, but I'm a professional!! Don't try this stuff at home!
_Call a PRO!!_
Seriously, Thank You Mr. Carroll. I enjoyed your book.

Carpentry.......2007-01-10
I was taking some classes at the college for a new career direction. One of the classes was Blueprint reading, not being proficiant with all construction terminology, I approached my teacher for some additional help. This was one of the books recomended to me. It did in fact help me quite a bit in the classroom, but also the diagrams and instructions are helpful in my daily work. I would recomend this book highly to newcomers in the consruction field, and I think it is a good reference book for those in the field already.

Amazing.......2007-01-03
This book is an incredible source of information and "how to". It has 90 chapters divided into four sections; Tools & Materials; Rough Carpentry; Exterior Finish; Interior Finish.
The scope of this book is incredible, and it is very informative and concise (it is a textbook). It covers the following areas
Wood & Lumber;Engineered Panels;Engineered Lumber Product; Fasteners;Hand Tools;Portable Power Tools;Stationary Power Tools; Blueprints & Building Codes;Building Layout;Concrete & Concrete Forms;Floor Framing; Wall Framing; Interior Rough Work; Scaffolds, Ladders, & Horses; Roof Framing; Stair Framing; Insulation & Ventilation; Cornice Construction; Roofing; Windows; Exterior Doors; Siding; Porches,Decks, & Fences; Drywall Construction; Wall Paneling & Wall Tile; Ceiling Finish; Interior Doors and Door Frames; Interior Trim; Stair Finish; Finish Floors; Cabinets & Countertops; Cabinet Doors and Drawers
Each of the aforementioned units is further divided into chapters giving the reader the ability to easily find and pinpoint the infomation that they need. The book has an 11 page glossary, many helpful pictures and photos and contains a total of 946 pages, with chapter tests and suggested essays which I find valuable for retaining info on procedures that I do not perform on a regular basis. A great, great book.

Book Description
Bring your chickens home to roost in comfort and style! Whether you're keeping one hen in a small backyard or 1,000 hens in a large free-range pasture, you will find the perfect housing plan in this comprehensive handbook.
Author and farmer Judy Pangman combed the country to select these 45 plans for housing both laying hens and meat birds (chickens or turkeys). The coops range from fashionable backyard structures featured in the annual Seattle Tilth City Chickens Tour and the Mad City Chickens Tour in Madison, Wisconsin, to the large-scale, moveable structures Joel Salatin has fashioned for Polyface Farm in Virginia.
You'll also find plans for converting trailer frames, greenhouses, and backyard sheds; low-budget alternatives for working with found and recycled materials; and simple ways to make waterers, feeders, and nestboxes. A gallery of color photographs provides other creative ideas to get you going. With basic building skills, a little elbow grease, and this book of plans, you've got all you need to shelter your flock.
Customer Reviews:
No plans in this book! Just ideas.......2007-08-11
This book would have gotten 5/5 stars from me if it read, "Chicken Coops: 46 Building IDEAS/PICTURES for housing your flock." There are absolutely NO PLANS IN THIS BOOK!!! If your looking for with actual plans in it, try "Poultry House Construction, by Michael Roberts." That book is under a hundred pages and is a wealth of knowledge (with various plans in it). If your looking for great chicken coop IDEAS than this is your book. There are a lot of great ideas in this book, and if your good with planning and tools than this is all you need. As I said if the book supplemented the word Ideas instead of plans I would have given it five starts. This is a great book, it just has a misleading title. Sorry Ms. Pangman I can't give you 5 stars when your book doesn't live up to it's title.
Chicken Coops - 45 Building Plans for Housing Your Flock.......2007-07-26
Lately our garden has been over run with weeds and grasshoppers, I am planning to build a small coop to house and protect a few chickens, mostly for weed control, but a few eggs would be a good bonus. This book is full of ideas. I can use the ideas from many of the plans to design a coop to fit our needs. I recommend this book to any one who has a need for a small coop or a small area for chickens.
Not what the tittle implies.......2007-07-11
Should I have read the reviews, including that of the author... I would probably not have this book on my shelves.
The book is interesting and amusing to see how different people has built different Coops and Houses for their birds but if you are looking for (as I was) real plans and how to build kind of book... you should look somewhere else.
What I have learned... is to read reviews and don't take book titles literally.
Can't speak for book, just service.......2007-06-27
Since I ordered the book for a chicken-raising friend, I can't really speak for the book itself. It did take forever to get here though- several books I'd ordered through the marketplace came form various areas of the country days (or weeks) sooner!
Coffee table chicken coop book.......2007-04-23
I was aware that there were no building plans (based on other reviews), but I wasn't too worried because of I can make materials lists pretty easily from drawings. However, I was surprised that the drawings in this book have incorrect measurements (rather frustrating). This is a coffee table book, and even as that, it's not so exciting. There were really only a few designs that broke away from the square-box chicken coop idea. The best thing about this book is the presentation of the idea of keeping chickens as being an urban middle-class phenomenon. It was good for ideas, but it's not a keeper.
Average customer rating:

Customer Reviews:
Read the reviews! This book is great!.......2007-07-16
I have zero home remodeling experience but after reading this book have done an awesome job hanging my drywall. You would never know I did the work my self. And I'm a woman. The biggest help (after reading the book) was buying a drywall hoist as well as other tools listed in the book. I was able to complete the entire job, ceilings too, completely unassisted. And I have 10' walls.
Great book with good advice on proper installation.......2007-06-08
I bought this book because I decided I needed some insight into proper drywall installation techniques as I felt I had done a poor job repairing part of a wall. I am impressed with the amount of information it contains and found some good advice to help me re-do my repair job correctly. The section in the book on texturing wallboard was useful, as I need to repair another wall where there had once been wallpaper.
Comprehensive, useful.......2007-05-09
I just drywalled a basement with the help of this book. It was valuable at two levels. I "hung" the basement about 80% myself. I never intended to do the finishing (though this book discusses that thoroughly). I'm 63 and frankly got tired of the physical labor, so I hired the final 20% done professionally. The finishing is happening almost as we speak. The book has also been valuable in evaluating the work of those I have hired to finish the project.
If you want to do a drywall project, I can't imagine a better guide.
Every DIY'er should read this book........2007-03-10
I purchased this book after having done significant drywall work in my own home. It was a humbling experience as page after page showed me ways I "could" have done the work or ways that I could have made my task easier. Not that my results were bad, but there were a lot of "raised eyebrow" sections of enlightenment - what a good book like this should evoke.
After reading this, you're not going to want to shop at the Home Depot for your stuff as you'll realize that there's quite a depth of products around drywall that the big-box stores don't handle.
On the down-side, as stated by other reviewers here, is the lack of framing prep or correction information - the book assumes you're work site is pretty much ready for the drywaller. Make sure you learn a bit about basic carpentry along with your new drywall skills. Also, the author is a bit dismissive when he discusses plaster. Those in older homes who love their plaster and the inherent advantages it brings may not like the dismissive tone taken about plaster. But if you need to put up drywall (and a scant few of us can plaster a wall from scratch) then it's a great learning resource.
That said, from a DIY'er perspective, I feel this book is a must-read before tackling that first drywall project.
Succint, well organized, made my job easier.......2007-01-03
The book in itself is great going about the techniques for drywalling. I am not a contractor and I am remodelling my own place and this book helped me a lot! I would say that 80% of the info I needed was present, it's just that being a do-it-yourself type of person I sometimes would like other info like - tips for using & cleaning tools while in a functioning house; how to remove texture from old drywall; tips on fixing gross errors in house geometry (like drywall boars being 1/2inh off plane of each other) ; and I would also have liked a 'cheat sheet' that I could hang in the work room to remind sequence and technique. Highly recommended for anyone doing a sall to medium installation

the complete guide to home carpentry.......2007-03-08
received book in a timely manner and in excellent condition
Very clear and well explained book........2006-05-04
I bought this book for a garage project of mine and the decent reviews it had. I must say the reviews are well deserved. This book offers plenty of photos and well explained "how-to" guide lines. Detailed explanation with photos of all the tools you'll need for your project. I can now do my projects with confidence considering I am a novice at carpentry. Excellent choice for the novist.
So far from complete its an insult to carpenters.......2006-04-16
Had to give 1 star to off set the other reviews. My problem with most of these carpentry books is their lack of conviction to a topic. I have been a carpenter for way longer than 4 years (the accepted journeyman level). In truth it takes a lifetime to keep up with new practices and master traditional techniques. If you need to read 93 PAGES OF 277 on what a particular tool is or how to set up a saw then you really are not ready for complete carpentry. You need to develop your understanding of the tools.
Taunton Press is my recommendation for high quality information. Most of their publications assume you know how to use your tools. I would like to see quality books on specific skills. The complete all in one would have to be text book size and come in volumes. One good example is Lewis Vogt Carpentry 3rd edition. Used in construction management courses.
This book is just fluff. A weekend warrior might find some good info to improve his garage or better use his tools.
Not a great book........2006-01-16
This book doesn't include any text about stairs. I guess most complete homes don't need stairs. I find this book more of a coffee table book than a book I can count on for howto information.
Good Basic Book!.......2005-12-27
I got this book from my wife for Christmas, and I was immediately able to use it! I'm a computer geek, and usually when I get a hammer in my hand, it ends up either hitting my fingers or making a bigger hole in the wall.
This book teaches ALL the basics, from how to saw wood to how to frame and install a new door in a new wall! The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that it's still a reference book - it's not something that I'd pore over in the middle of the night and couldn't put down.
It's still a great book!
