Customer Reviews:
Health Behavior & Health Education, a good buy.......2007-09-30
Good book for a class on Health Behavior and Health Education Theories. Good for graduate level work. Theories broken into chapters. Each chapter has the theory history, significant time line for the theory, chart and descriptions of the constructs, and examples where research has used the theory effectively. Examples in book make use of the theory more understandable.
Excellent Reference Book.......2007-08-27
I purchased this book to use as a reference for a Graduate Project on Health Promotion. I was particularly interested in Planning Models so most of my research focused on Part 5 in the book
Excellent Book-I highly recommend it
Judy W.
very useful book.......2007-02-11
This book is very useful to anyone involved in the public health field for research or developing interventions to address any health behavior with any group. I'm glad I purchased it. I highly recommend it as a valuable resource.
Not a very appealing text.......2006-04-19
Chapters are disjoint at times, with no reference to similar concepts between them. Almost as if they were all written separately without any editing to tie them all together.
Information is presented in something less than an interesting manner - it's pretty dry!
Health Behavior and Health Education.......2005-10-03
This book is a must have for anyone in the health education field. It presents all major health behavior theories in a clear and understandable manner, applies theories to case studies at the end of each chapter, and offers a table summary of each theory's core constructs. The book is well written and with this third edition comes more updated research information.

Customer Reviews:
very pleased.......2007-09-08
I was pleased to receive this book in a timely matter. It was in good condition when I received it.
Good reference for first year teaching.......2007-04-12
Did not use in my assignments - other texts were necessary. I believe it will be a good reference for first year teaching.
Little Detail.......2006-06-27
I have read many methods books over the past 4 years. This book was the initial text required in a methods class. I found it to be very poor in detail (especially for the preservice teacher). I finished the book wondering, "where are the specific how to's?" I felt that I wasn't prepared to go into a classroom to teach a lesson. We were all struggling in class.
So, I decided to go to another college bookstore and found "Methods for Effective Teaching" by Paul Burden. This book answered all my questions and went into great detail. It is based on the INTASC Standards and PLT of the Praxis.
Teachers are Pivotal for Learner-Centeredness to Occur.......2000-03-12
Finally... I found an author and educator who states the obvious. In order to be a successful teacher, one has to first understand oneself as a person - the positive and negative aspects of our personality and identity that impact our instruction. Only by understanding these issues are teachers freed to "move the learner to the center".
Borich does an outstanding job utilizing a friendly, conversational manner of writing that easily engages the reader. Research seems to be placed in a better context when Borich "keeps it real" for the reader.
I especially appreciate his chapter on questioning strategies, a blatent area of weakness for many beginning and veteran teachers alike. He even extends questions techniques into promoting thinking and problem solving.
Finally, Borich successfully articulates the value of group collaboration often overlooked by teachers hooked on cooperative learning. One cannot exist without the other or student accountablily will drop and student frustration will prevail.
This is a must read book for any teacher trainer in search of research to support effective teaching methods.

Customer Reviews:
Just the facts, ma'am..........2002-02-07
I'm currently using this as a college textbook. It's taken me three weeks to work through three chapters. After two weeks, I ended up skimming over the 2nd and 3rd chapters just to make it through without stopping 4 or 5 times wondering what it was I was reading. I can see it's loaded with important information, but it's an effort to stay focused. The headings and subheadings are bland and repetitive. I often feel like I'm rereading a section, but how can I tell when sections I've read aren't memorable? The authors also show a knack for stating the obvious. For instance, "Identifying the required KSAs is not as obvious, but they are still relatively easy to obtain, by examining each task and asking the question, 'What knowledge, skills, and/or attitudes are necessary to perform a particular task?'" (p.143).
I find it ironic that a book that is attempting to teach people how to make training pertinent and interesting to others is itself uninteresting. This is a book for those who just want the facts and don't care if the writing and presentation are lively or engaging.

Stigma and Sexual Orientation: Understanding Prejudice against Lesbians, Gay Men and Bisexuals (Psychological Perspectives on Lesbian & Gay Issues)
ASIN: 0803953828 |
Book Description
The Fifth Volume in the annual series Psychological Perspective on Lesbian and Gay Issues is devoted to providing a basic collection of resources for educators, practitioners and researchers in Lesbian/Gay Bisexual and Transgendered Psychology. The volume and the series are sponsored by Division 44 of the American Psychological Association.
Academic psychologists have been challenged to make psychology curricula more inclusive. Program changes involve revising undergraduate and graduate course material and content to represent the full spectrum of sexual orientation identity, development and life dilemmas. Similarly, trainers and educators responsible for training in related mental health disciplines, mental health agencies and other venues that deliver psychological services to Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, And Transgendered Psychology individuals have been appropriately challenged to make training competent practitioners a priority. Many practitioners who have had no training in Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, And Transgendered Psychology find themselves confronted with clients that they feel ill equipped to address. They often have the desire to develop clinical competencies in this area, but don’t know where to begin. This volume is intended to serve as a basic resource with information on salient lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered psychology issues and to provide the reader with a range of references and other resources to explore key identity, development, and other subjects.
Customer Reviews:
Homophobia.......2001-11-01
An excellent resource manual of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered psychology with a strong emphasis on their segregation from mainstream America. Includes strong literature on the structural isolation of lesbians and gay males and how the creation of a subculture leads to negative stereotypes, warped images, and fictional creations that are used to justify oppression of members of the disadvantaged group. Depicts and explains the homophobic image of homosexuals as a small, self-interested group, favoring their own, commanding a disproportionate world influence. Relates homophobia to other oppressed groups, including Jews as self-interested and cliquish, and African American males as sexual predators. The book also addresses how homophobes justify their behavior through logic and morality. Finally, it provides interesting research on reducing homophobia, including studies on contact and cooperation as means to resolve group conflict.

Buddhist theme presents ethical dilema for Judea-Christian Belief System.......2007-09-09
The kaleidoscope descipture for this text should include a content warning. The author is really highlighting her doctornal thesis on Buddhist influences on Aristoles work and Nursing. This is presented but not critiqued for it's place in the Judea-Christian Belief System prevalent in Western Civilizaton.
Nursing Ethics - Good Book.......2005-08-25
After reading this book in my nursing practice issues class I learned a lot about ethics in nursing. Being a nursing student, I can use this valuable information in my clinicals and when I start working in the hospital. The ethical concerns are discussed comprehensively. Nurses need to read this book. Very good book, read it.
