They had faces then, in the golden age of Hollywood when a publicity photo could make or break a star. The visual power of George Hurrell's portraits, with their Rembrandtesque lighting and dramatic poses, shaped the careers of such stars as Joan Crawford, Jean Harlow, and Jane Russell, and did as much or more to establish them as their film performances. Mark Vieira, who adopted Hurrell's techniques and uses them to this day, explains how the master portraitist lit and retouched his photographs--a portrait of Crawford before and after retouching reveals what an artist the one-time painter really was--and analyzes their impact.

5 out of 5 stars An American Icon.......2007-08-25

George Hurrell is universally acknowledged THE Hollywood portrait photographer, the man who recreated during the talkies much of the mystery of the silent stars through his breathtaking photographs. At a time when the finest still photography was becoming more incisive and natural, Hurrell managed to balance this new naturalism and directness in highly manipulated ways, producing in his best work iconic images of the great stars of MGM. After the second World War his work became largely passe, appearing too contrived and built up for an age demanding grit and spontaneity and an off-hand naturalness.
This work seeks to both show and tell the story of Hurrell's highwater era as not only the major photographer of the stars, and MGM in particular, but also his development as artist. Hurrell's flamboyant personality, his novel and sometimes off-putting behavior during shootings, seems now unfortunately taken as role template by many lesser fashion photographers. In his day and at his height during the late twenties through the beginnings of World War II Hurrell dominates a demanding and highly accomplished professional field.
Whether you live in a sumptious penthouse overlooking Central Park, need a single book for the coffee table in the living room of that restored Neutra you just purchased, or just enjoy reasonably priced fashion books, Hurrell's Hollywood Portraits fits the bill. At a significantly reduced price its a lovely reminder of one of the nicer advantages of democratic publishing: not every fine art book is a prohibitively expensive limited edition printed by a small press.

5 out of 5 stars As a glamour photographer myself..........2007-04-13

As a glamour photographer myself, this is a book I own and use for inspiration. I love the way Hurrell not only captures the inner-beauty of the subjects, but his photojournalistic approach. I often graze through this book as I've read it many times over--the grazing gets me going when it comes to my own glamour photography. I recommend anyone interested in this book, buy it now! If you'd like to see how it's affected my career, also check out the following books, Garage Glamour: Digital Nude and Beauty Photography Made Simple, Rolando Gomez's Glamour Photography: Professional Techniques and Images and even a book where I have a chapter, Professional Portrait Lighting: Techniques and Images from Master Photographers (Photo Pro Workshop series) This book should not only be on a collector's list, but for any student of photography--we're always learning no matter what level your photography. ---Rolando Gomez, contributing writer, Studio Photography magazine

5 out of 5 stars ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL.......2006-08-19

This book -- how beautiful. I have photography books by several of the great portrait photographers of the 20th Century, and this one is the best. There are a wealth of photographs, and the story of Hurrell's life is also interesting. If you ever thought about seriously learning about photography and taking some good pictures, this book will take any hesitation out of your mind. Gorgeous!!

5 out of 5 stars Hurrell's Hollywood Portraits.......2006-07-25

This book is everything I expected. The pictures are great and the text very informative. I am enjoying it very much and it is a valued addition to my film library.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT BOOK! Vieira's mastery of the written word brings that era to life........2005-12-03

I thoroughly enjoyed browsing through and then reading this beautiful tribute to the legendary work of George Hurrell. As compelling as Hurrell's photos are it is the author's indepth knowledge and understanding of Hollywood and Hurrell that set this book apart.

Mark Vieira's own photographic artistry is based on Hurrell's techniques, providing current-day enthusiasts with authentic glamour photography of their own.

An Intimate Look at L.A.’s Hottest Trendsetters and the Inspiring Spaces They Live In

Rooted in innovation, aspiration, and tradition, daring in its scale and often in its luxury, Los Angeles style is unique. Nothing expresses these values more strikingly or more beautifully than the homes of L.A.’s hippest and most influential set: the designers, artists, stylists, and entrepreneurs whose tastes lead the way for American style.

“Just like the people who live here, Hollywood homes reflect a creativity and sensibility that is rarely seen elsewhere....With Hip Hollywood Homes, Sue Hostetler has given us a chance to peek inside some of the most uniquely designed residences in Los Angeles.” —Courteney Cox Arquette

“What does the word ‘hip’ mean, anyway? The reason I choose to live in Los Angeles is that I’m inspired by the architecture here—by the freedom of so many choices Angelenos have in how they want to live, both visually and emotionally. Style is so personal here. To me, everything about Los Angeles is about freedom—and that's hip!” —Sharon Stone

“Hollywood used to be all about cheese and glitz and schlock. What happened? Every house in this book is so hip and groovy you just want to move right in.” —Simon Doonan, Creative Director, Barneys New York

Great find. This is the perfect book when plannning a remodel. It's refreshing to find such a variety of interiors under one cover. The garden shots are equally inspiring and wildly different from one home to the next. The book is beautifully shot and the narative is well thought out. Well worth buying.

5 out of 5 stars One Word: Fabulous, Fabulous ,Fabulous.......2006-09-30

I know you say to yourselves. Not another narsicistic book on celebrity domiciles.. But this book stands out. It is smartly written by Sue Hostetler. An element of honesty comes out in her subjects that one is not usually privy to in a celebrity "fluff piece". The humanity of those who dwell within the walls portrayed in this book really shines through. Also the photographs are "Superb". I have owned many beautiful photo books and this one really stands out. The depth of the images and the natural balance of light is stunning. Peter seems to know just what the spaces want to share with the viewer. All the homes shine under Peters visionary imagemaking. I would say if you are interested in what really drives the styles of today, "Hip Hollywood Homes" is a MUST HAVE. The style , design , and tastemakers who opened their lives and homes to Peter and Sue really are the creme' de la creme' of what is happening now.

5 out of 5 stars Vanity Fair meets Architectural Digest for those with real style!,.......2006-09-29

Much, much more than other coffee table books!

It's a design and style book that reads like a great celebrity or style magazine! The elegant cover caught my eye, the interior and exterior home photos inspired new decorating ideas, and the inside scoop of Hollywood's movers and shakers made me want to curl up with the book just as a good page-turner novel does! Hostetler has found the right mix for anyone with high-end, edgy and in-the-now home design sensibilities.

Done - it's on the top of my Holiday gift list for friends, family and co-workers this year!!!

Book Description

Hollywood moviemaking is one of the constants of American life, but how much has it changed since the glory days of the big studios? David Bordwell argues that the principles of visual storytelling created in the studio era are alive and well, even in today's bloated blockbusters. American filmmakers have created a durable tradition--one that we should not be ashamed to call artistic, and one that survives in both mainstream entertainment and niche-marketed indie cinema. Bordwell traces the continuity of this tradition in a wide array of films made since 1960, from romantic comedies like Jerry Maguire and Love Actually to more imposing efforts like A Beautiful Mind. He also draws upon testimony from writers, directors, and editors who are acutely conscious of employing proven principles of plot and visual style. Within the limits of the "classical" approach, innovation can flourish. Bordwell examines how imaginative filmmakers have pushed the premises of the system in films such as JFK, Memento, and Magnolia. He discusses generational, technological, and economic factors leading to stability and change in Hollywood cinema and includes close analyses of selected shots and sequences. As it ranges across four decades, examining classics like American Graffiti and The Godfather as well as recent success like The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, this book provides a vivid and engaging interpretation of how Hollywood moviemakers have created a vigorous, resourceful tradition of cinematic storytelling that continues to engage audiences around the world.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great book, great textbook.......2006-11-05

David Bordwell is one of the most widely read film scholars around, and not without reason: he writes with ease and ellegance, his insights are often deep and almost always relevant, his starting points are usually essential for better understanding cinematic art. Is he always right?
Of course not, he is not a religious profet or Jacques Lacan (Oops!).

However he usually describes the area of his study quite well, cites references and data he would like you to check in order to see whether he is right and, well, does serious scholarly work. Not a small achievent in a fastly globalizing (and fastly "mcdonaldsizing") academic community of cultural gurus who know everything about everything... Therefore, when you disagree with him (as I sometimes do), you usually know what your are disagreeing about and why.

This book is another Bordwell's insightful contribution to the study of American and global cinema (styles in cinema are basically more international/global than in literature; probably less than in classical music or jazz), explaining how contemporary cinema develops from older stylistical patterns. From the era of silent movies or Slavko Vorkapic's experiments for Frank Capra to modern-era (greatly digitalized) blockbusters, Hollywood's manners and procedures of telling a story can be compared with quite a fruitfull result.
Ofcourse, simple description of stylistic trend or procedure does not directly serve as a proof of aesthetic value, but the subject of this book is, basically, style, not aesthetic value or anything else that can be connected to (and is intertwined on many levels with) style.
This book is equally useful for scholars, teachers and (thanks to his nice style and clear argumentation) students of cinema and all other educated art lovers.

5 out of 5 stars Nobody Does it Better!.......2006-10-25

Like the author's other works, this is a highly meticulous and empirical study of the way contemporary Hollywood films function. Paying close attention to selected films by intensive frame analysis, Bordwell calls into question many contemporary "sibboleths" concerning the status of "post-Hollywood" which he reveals as having more connections with its classical counterpart than most critics believe. His attention to fine detail and references to "American Cinematographer" and screenwriting manuals reveal that he has really done his homework. He challenges his contemporaries to do likewise before they engage in problematic "post" judgements whether they be on the realm of postmodernism, post-colonialism, and post- anything which may become academic equivalents of those formerly fashionable platform shoes or flared trousers that often date episodes of the 1970s British cop series THE SWEENEY.

The references to contemporary Hong Kong cinema and analysis of films such as Johnny To's A HERO NEVER DIES are also valuable components of this book. Like DRAGNET's Sergeant Joe Friday, Bordwell insists that we supply facts based on viewing the evidence ourselves. We should not ignore important empirical aspects before we begin to make meanings that may eventually prove to be non-substantial. Those who choose to avoid the well-researched findings of this book should be issued with speeding tickets and forced to attend a scholarly version of "community service" or "boot camp" involving the detailed viewings of as many films as possible, reading interviews with film directors, and studying important journals such as AMERICAN CINEMATOGRAPHER. This is equally important for those newly converted "film experts" in English Departments of postmodernist persuasion who recently discover Laura Mulvey's 1975 essay on "Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema" and regard it as a "gospel" truth which remains unaltered today! These feelings are more akin to non-linguistic theological studies and not the highly textual, linguistic based explorations of biblical and near eastern studies that relay on studies in pre-semitic studies, Canaanite, Aramaic, and Arabic studies to reveal key empirical structures influencing "holy writ."

This is another indispensable work by an important scholar that every serious professor and student should learn from even if it only involves better interpretation and a more professional "making of meaning."

Book Description

America's Songs tells the "stories behind" the most beloved popular songs of the last century. We all have songs that have a special meaning in our lives; hearing them evokes a special time or place. Little wonder that these special songs have become enduring classics. Nothing brings the roarin '20s to life like "Tea for Two" or "I'm just Wild About Harry"; the Great Depression is evoked in all of its pain and misery in songs like "Brother Can You Spare a Dime?; "God Bless America" revives the powerful hope that American democracy promised to the world during the dark days of World War II; "Young at Heart" evokes the postwar optimism of the '50s. And then there are the countless songs of love, new romance, and heartbreak: "As Time Goes By," "Always," "Am I Blue"...the list is endless.
Along with telling the stories behind these songs, America's Songs suggests, simply and succinctly, what makes a song great. The book illuminates the way each great song melds words and music - sentiment and melody - into a seamless whole. America's Songs also traces the fascinating but mysterious process of collaboration, the give-and-take between two craftsmen, a composer and a lyricist, as they combined their talents to create a song.
For anyone interested in the history of the songs that America loves, America's Songs will make for fascinating reading.

3 out of 5 stars Lots of fun info but some annoying errors.......2007-01-16

There was a lot of great info in this book, especially covering songs from the first half of the 20th century. But there were also some annoying errors and omissions. Among the errors: a photo of the original star of Cabaret (Jill Haworth) is labeled as Jan Clayton (who was the original star of Carousel several decades earlier). The authors write that Comden and Green only had three standards, and yet they include four in this book (New York New York, The Party's Over, Just in Time and Make Someone Happy). There are some odd choices, such as "It's Not Where You Start" (from Seesaw) that is not remotely a standard, but they omit "If He Walked Into My Life" (from Mame) and "The Way We Were." And much as we all love the musical Chicago, I don't think it merits a page-and-a-half (I'm not even sure "All That Jazz" qualifies as a standard) but there's no coverage of "Tomorrow" (from Annie) or "What I Did For Love" (A Chorus Line). The authors probably would have been smarter to just stop coverage in the 1950s or 1960s.

5 out of 5 stars Great Details!.......2006-09-29

You really can read this book cover to cover...or the information on each song's background can stand alone. If you're interested in modern musical history, you won't want to miss this.

5 out of 5 stars An invaluable book for those who love the standards........2006-08-31

America's Songs is a wonderful source of fascinating information on the lyricists and composers of the great standards. Anyone who loves those songs will find this book invaluable. Writers Furia and Lasser have produced a tour de force.

5 out of 5 stars America's Songs.......2006-08-01

A delightful journey in melodic nostalgia. Philip Furia and Michael Lasser use their long experience with American popular music to tell us with insight and humor how more than 600 songs dating from 1910 to 1977 came to be written, how they were received, how they touched American culture. The surprise for the reader is the discovery of how many of the songs linger in one's memory, how many of the words one can recall, how many of the tunes one can still sing. Then the message of the place of the songs in American life comes home, how much they say about the way we lived.

Not a book to be read from cover to cover but rather one to be browsed for favorite parts, one to be returned to time and again.

5 out of 5 stars The inside story about many great American Songs!.......2006-06-19

This delightful and informative book caught my eye when I noticed that the much-esteemed songwriter,Ray Evans, wrote a blurb on the back. The book is arranged chronologically, and gives fascinating glimpses into what lead to the creation of many fantastic songs, and also explains what makes these great songs great. To me, the star of the book is Irving Berlin, who really had an incredible genius for songwriting. The clever crafting of Berlin's lyrics hadn't been adequately appreciated by me, until that exciting book showed me the craft and the art which Berlin applied to his songs. Not that other greats are glossed over, Furia and Lasser really give a wonderfully expansive collection of (mostly) fellas, who made American music what is was, and influenced what it is. Highly recommended for those who love, theatre and music.

5 out of 5 stars Must Have for a screenwriter.......2007-08-17

Excellent. Comprehensive. Full of examples. Will it be the same standard fifteen years from now? Who knows.

5 out of 5 stars What Other Books Don't Have..........2007-08-12

There are hundreds of screenwriting books on the shelves (some of them good), but even the best are 90% recycled material; endless prattling about character and plot points, as if the last 40 books never mentioned it. For all those hundreds of pages about narrative, there's very little technical information about how to convert that material into a rigid and admittedly unreadable format that is the screenplay. The advent of screenwriting software solves all those problems except the ones the books never talked about: proper formatting, which, Riley states quite reasonably, can put a good story in bad shape.

He makes an important note before the book even begins: THE SOFTWARE ONLY DOES MARGINS. Neither it nor these books tell you how to type out elaborate, uncommon transitions and dialogue arrangements on the page: overlapping voices, phone-conversations, foreign langages, flashbacks and scenes-within-scenes (etc.)...but Hollywood Standard DOES. And unlike other writers of how-to books, he doesn't lacquer the page with self-important droning. He stays professional and direct, explaining the difficult in simple, concise, this-is-how-and-this-is-why fashion. You can read this book in an hour and STILL find yourself revisiting it again and again to double-check your work.

Half of the book are examples of what can go wrong and how to fix it: everything from where to put hyphens in slug-lines to what words to underline and when to captialize and more. Your head is likey to start swimming from the overload of detail you receive about how to tweak things exactly the way they should, and from the realization of how much you didn't know: like how to omit scenes without changing the page count on a locked script, or how many lines should precede a page break, or when to alter you parentheticals.

Granted, it was correctly mentioned that not EVERY SINGLE LITTLE DETAIL IN THE HISTORY OF SCREENWRITING FORMAT is addressed in this book, and there's no guarantee that refraining from underlining periods will get your script sold, but the information revealed in STANDARD will ensure that if your script DOES get rejected, it won't be for amateur mistakes.

I can't recommend this highly enough.

5 out of 5 stars Best Screenwriting Format Guide.......2007-07-11

This is most definitely the best book on screenplay format. If you're looking into writing professionally for film, this is an absolute must-have. If you want your script to make it through Hollywood, don't delay any longer before getting your copy.

5 out of 5 stars SAVED ME FOUR YEARS OF COLLEGE.......2007-03-10

just kidding. i just finished this book and i will now buy the software that was mentioned. i have a few stories to tell and direct! i will still hire a great writer, but will know the script writing process etc. clearly now! thanks amazon.......now i don't have to kill myself..

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource.......2007-01-13

This book is straight forward, easy to read. Chris Riley has a humorous style that doesn't bog the reader down. Gives confidence to write a script that looks professional. Great examples of how a scripted page should look.

Book Description

Greta Garbo, Joan Crawford, Marlene Dietrich-all were icons of beauty and glamour in 1930s Hollywood. Screen Style reveals the impact of celebrities like these on women filmgoers, looking beyond the surface of the films and fashions of the era-often described as forms of escapism from the difficult realities of the Depression-to show how Hollywood presented women with models for self-determination during a time of rapid social change. Revealing the public and cinematic fascination with the strong-willed women featured in so many movies-ambitious gold diggers, career-minded working girls, social climbers, dangerous androgynous females, and other exotics-Sarah Berry presents a lively look at films, fan magazines, and advertising of that time.

Sarah Berry writes on film, media, and cultural studies and designs interactive multimedia projects. She teaches film studies at Portland State University.

Book Description

Though Nashville is the current Country-and-Western capital, Hollywood put hillbilly singers to work in the early years (1930s-1950s) in movies, at recording studios, and on radio shows.

Hillbilly Hollywood is a lavishly illustrated volume that examines the culture that produced costumes (like Nathan Turk, Nudie Cohen, and Manuel Cuevas) who created that famous C&W style - well tailored, elaborately embroidered or beaded clothes.

Historical text and interviews with C&W legends complement examples from Mary Stuart's extensive vintage collections as well as candid photographs (most never published before) of Elvis Presley, Gene Autry, Patsy Cline, and more. Dynamically designed, Hillbilly Hollywood is as much a collector's piece as the costumes it features.

5 out of 5 stars beauty & brains & cool, cool, cool.......2005-02-04

The swoon-inducing, jaw-dropping photo of young Johnny Cash at the Hollywood Bowl alone is worth the price of this book. But don't just look at the beautiful pictures (and there are many) - read the words. Well-written, insightful, and often funny, the stories from the mouths of the stars sparkle brighter than the rhinestones on the cover. Hillbilly Hollywood motivated me to search out and find the music of artists unfamiliar to me before, and I will forever be grateful to the author for introducing me to the wild brilliance of the almost-forgotten Maddox Bros. & Rose, and others like them. This is the perfect book for anyone who loves music, whether it be country-western, punk rock, or anything in between.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful in Every Way........2005-01-19

Debby Bulls book "Hillbilly Hollywood" gives us a great look at the almost-forgotten flashy country and western artists of radio and early western movies. We get a thorough insiders look at the glitz and the true 'ART' of rhinestone cowboy and cowgirl wear by the country artists of the '40's and 50's. There are wonderful color images and historical photos of my favorite country legends. The book itself would be at home on Elvis's coffee table. Yum! Yum! This book is a "Five Star" ten course feast for the eyes and soul for us wannabe cowboy and cowgirl types. A true collectors item.

5 out of 5 stars Hillbilly HEAVEN!!!!.......2005-01-14

I'm a very hard girl to buy for (and a music snob to boot)but my sweetheart did a very good thing when he purchased Hillbilly Hollywood for me as an early Valentine's Day gift!
It's just GORGEOUS,well-written,and chock-full of stunning color images of several historic pieces of country couture including rare photos of artists that I just adore like Johnny Cash,The Flying Burritto Bros.,and (gasp!) Rockabilly Goddess CHARLENE ARTHUR!!!
It's very difficult these days to find any information on the designers Nudie and Manuel but this book covers it ALL!!!
SO SATISFYING!!!
Always,
Grey DeLisle (wife of Murry Hammond:)

5 out of 5 stars Great book, for cowboy and cowgirls.......2002-03-23

Who are into western wear.
I'm a cowgirl living in The Netherlands and books about westernwear are hard to find. 100 years of western wear by Tyler Beard was the one I found in Holland. Also a great book!!
Tyler send Hillbilly Hollywood to me, and I love every page of it! It's about stars and their love for the garb.

5 out of 5 stars Does Hillbilliness Proud.......2000-07-10

Debby Bull's HILLBILLY HOLLYWOOD is an astonishing book. Her writing is never tainted by nostalgia. It's fresh, original and cleverly surmised. The physical book is about as extravagant as Nudie's glorious Western regalia--complete with rhinestones on the cover. It's a tribute to a strange phenomenon--the gone, but not forgotten completely, country-western artists of the '40s who were (regrettably) bumped from the spotlight by rock 'n roll and leftist politics. It's great to see the spirit of this era so well communicated. As a native born hillbilly and the author of THE BEAUTIFUL AND ENDURING OZARKS and co-author with my wife Crystal of 3 books on Branson (often dubbed "the hillbilly Las Vegas") I feel credentialed to endorse this book. I'm going to order a six-pack later in the year for Christmas presents. I suspect there is a bunch of closet hillbillies out there that will get a real kick from this neat book.

Book Description

Say the word "Hollywood" and glamorous, sparkling, lavish images come to mind. In Hollywood Style, bestselling design and style author Diane Dorrans Saeks takes readers on a magical insider's tour of some of the most beautiful and alluring private houses, classic residences, and historic hotels Hollywood has to offer. Behind the clipped hedges, immaculate gardens, and locked doors of these palm-punctuated neighborhoods are the residences of some of the most famous movie stars and musicians in the world, designed by such star architects as Frank Lloyd Wright, Paul Williams, R. M. Schindler, and Richard Neutra.
While these inspiring interiors offer opulence, they also feature witty design creativity, inventive architecture, and a chic sensibility that are a welcome respite from the razzle-dazzle of Hollywood. These are interiors that are created with not only elegance but a sense of fun. Each one is lived in and loved. Each one is beautiful yet completely original.
With pictures by a selection of Hollywood's top photographers, these pages display an insider's look at the personal style of culture's most influential trendsetters. An exciting and inspiring look at glamour behind the scenes, Hollywood Style is a stunning tribute to exuberant style in all its decadence.

2 out of 5 stars Not up to expectations.......2007-02-19

If you're a subscriber to Elle Decor (US); the majority of the homes featured are plucked from Elle Decor as well as Michael S. Smith's book Element of Style. I was totally disappointed as I expected more.

4 out of 5 stars so perfect and idyllic.......2006-09-29

Even if you do not particularly follow the Hollywood film star scene, this book offers a fascinating glimpse at some unique houses in Los Angeles. Mostly in Hollywood and the nearby suburbs. Each house also has a perfectly manicured garden, often with a pool.

The styles vary widely. As Saeks relates, several houses were designed by famous architects, like Schindler or Neutra. Everything seems so perfect and idyllic in the photos. Some houses, up in the hills, also have fantastic views of Los Angeles.

The book shows that enough money can on occasion purchase the utmost in style.

This book has some FABULOUS recipes, but they are definitely for special occasions or when you have a LOT of time on your hands. You would not want to be trying to whip up one of these recipes on the fly, at 6:00 on a school night. Plus, the kids would probably turn their noses up at the unusual dishes. But, if you're looking for a special recipe for a special night, look here.
