Customer Reviews:
Written for children.......2002-04-16
...The problem is that this books seems like it was written for high school students. The first chapter opens with a self-diagnosis: "I clarify the group's goals and ensure that the goals are formulated so members 'sink or swim' together and are committed to achieve them." Or how about, "I advocate my views and challenge the views of others in order to create high-quality and creative decions."
It never gets better. On page 231, for example, in the chapter "Using Power," the authors state, "Even though we sometimes do not like to admit it, power is a basic aspect of social life. It can be seized or given up, increased or lost. It can be used for good, evil, or trivial purposes. All relationships -- with family, friends, lovers, co-workers -- involve power and influence. Yet many person are unaware of the influence they exert on others, and many people are unaware of how necessary and constructive mutual influence is in building effective groups and collaborative relationships among members. Being skillful in influencing other group members and taking responsibility for such influences are important parts of being a member of a group."
Ya think?
The book goes on to identify "the process by which group members mobilize their power in order to accomplish their goals..." Each "action item" is followed by a paragraph of fluff just in case the heading isn't clear enough (not included here):
1. Determining Your Goals.
2. Assessing Your Relevant Resources.
3. Determining Your Needed Coalitions.
4. Negotiating a Mutual Support Agreement.
5. Implementing the Contracts.
I was really disappointed with this book because I was hoping for a book that analyzed the psychology of group behavior and offered practical rules based on that analysis. This book, however, is just too shallow to accomplish that. I imagine it was written for undergraduates, but I would think that even a sophmore would feel insulted.
Joining Together is a Great Resource.......2000-02-20
I read this book as an assignment in a university sociology course. It is a great resouce to have on hand if you work with teams or are intersted in organizational/group behavior. Some of the activities have been used in my "Effective Social Relations" class and we found them not only fun, but educational. I have not read the 1999 edition, but am hoping to get it for a graduation present this April!

SHEIN SHINES ON.......2007-10-02
This little book is a gem. Always was and always will be.
Take off a weekend. Turn off the phone. Shut your email.
Take a big notebook and an big fat easy to-handle pen
and refurbish you mind gears.
A month or two later do the same with Career Anchors: Participant Workbook (Pfeiffer Essential Resources for Training and HR Professionals)
Shien shines on.. and so will you after letting his special sanity into your neurology. At One Big Idea Consulting Limited NZ Schein is always on our 100-Day Action Projects menu. Nutritional Food for thought as well as organisation processing.
Consulting Process, NOT Process Consulting.......2007-08-07
Just to clarify, this is a book on the consulting process, not a book about process consulting. The title and description of the book are misleading. Consulting Process (this book) discusses how to go about the activities of consulting, while Process Consulting is the field of consulting covering business process analysis and design.
Power Piece of Writing.......2007-03-17
I thought this book was fantastic. It was so great to sit down and read almost the entire book in one setting. I took the entire Martin Luther King holiday and devoted it to this book with amazing results.
Not only was it refreshing to read such a small (but powerful) book, but I loved the authors avid use of short, paragraphs, acronyms (examples: p-c, OD, etc.) as well as, bulleted and numbered items. I thought this worked really well for providing the reader with vast information in an easy to read and understand format.
It was interesting that the books author; Edgar Schein, spent quite an amount of time in the book describing process consultation and the role it plays in organizational development by outlining his own experience. By utilizing this form of writing I was able to pull together ample information from both the concepts outlined in the book and practical application of them.
I really enjoyed Chapter Fours section entitled; Types of Coping Responses to Emotional Issues. After reading through the three basics kinds of coping patterns observed; I began seeking out indviduals in my work environment who fit particular patterns.
It was interesting to read that once individuals within a group open the lines of communication they can determine whether or not sharing personal feelings regarding other group members and work might be effective.
Within Chapter Seven, the thing that caught my eye was the author's avid use of powerful words to grasp the readers attention; such as; trust subordinates, professionalism, ambivalent, total leader and total group.
Schein shines in his succint and clear consulting book.......2007-03-09
The book has pragmatic information that can be applied, and explains enough theory for anyone to understand where the consulting model is coming from. Well written by a leader in organizational development.
A Book That Works.......2006-08-27
This book is a "must have" for anyone who works with individuals in a coaching role.

Customer Reviews:
Helping Skills.......2007-09-10
As the new semester has just begun, I have had limited exposure to this book, but what has already become apparent is the no-nonsense, easy way in which this text is written. I am a full-time student who has so much text book reading to do, so it is a real pleasure to have a required reading that is so straight forward while being also very imformative. I wish all my reading was this great.
Great for Experiential Learning.......2007-05-04
This book leads the reader through a three stage model of helping: exploration, insight, and action. This book is incredibly well-balance between Rogerian, psychodynamic, and CBT skill sets. If you just pick up the book and read it may seem like it is simplistic; however, the high quality of the book is that it gives the readers several activities to practice the skills in the book. Things that seem easy, like restating what someone just said, become difficult when you try to do it in practice. If you follow along with the practices after each chapter you will see how the book is molding you to become a better listener and a better helper.
This book is primarily used for counseling-type classes. However, this book would be useful for anyone that that talks to other people and wants the other person to feel comfortable.
Clear and easy to read........2006-11-10
This is the textbook for a Clinical Psychology in the Community course. It's very clear and simple to read. The author provides details of how best to establish a helping relationship, as well as the pitfalls.
Very readable, clearly written, good examples.......2003-07-08
While rather simple for some of the more advanced counseling students in my pastoral counseling class, this book proved to be an excellent primer in basic helping skills. It was a good review for me as well (I have over 20 years experience in rehab counseling).
Solid writing, easy to read, and informative.......2003-05-02
I first used this book in my graduate program in a class for communication and leadership. This skills taught in this book are outstanding. Now, I plan to use the ideas from this book in my own career, as well as helping an undergraduate peer staff at a university learn the basic helping guidelines. This book is highly recommended.
Book Description
This widely used and respected book presents an active, multi-sensory approach to group leading, focusing heavily on group leadership skills. While written with the counselor in mind, this book also provides an outstanding discussion of group dynamics for professionals in group leadership positions. The authors discuss the many facets of group counseling and provide examples that show "how" each skill can be applied in a wide range of group settings to produce efficient working groups.
Customer Reviews:
Practical & Thorough.......2006-11-10
As a graduate student in a group dynamics class I found this book very practical and thorough. I like Yalom's interpersonal approach a lot too but I find that this book covers the nuts and bolts of groups really well.
SLOW DELIVERY.......2005-09-24
I promptly emailed the company and told them that I ordered the wrong book. I asked them if there was any way for them to stop my order. They never replied and it still too 2 weeks for me to recieve my book. When I received my book there was not receipt or return address.
Counseling groups? You probably need this!.......2005-08-08
Written in Jacobs's usual concise, never boring, and yet easy to read style, this informative text concerning group counseling provides all of the information a qualified counselor needs to plan, develop, and facilitate groups effectively. Jacobs's introduces group concepts within the integrative framework of Impact Therapy, a dynamic approach to counseling, incorporating theory and creative techniques, that he developed. His style, while not for everyone, provides the tools that a courageous counselor well-versed in theory can use to facilitate client movement.
I have studied with Dr. Jacobs, and so quickly realized these are the very same techniques he uses to run his Theories and Techniques classes. I know they work because there is never a moment in class that feels wasted, and it is never boring. My experience has been that class is generally over long before you want it to be.
Recently, I was developing a group proposal as a requirement of a group counseling class I took this summer. I had read the Corey book on groups, had the benefit of a semester's worth of lectures, had been through 40 or 50 additional publications/articles. I had all of this information and I had an idea, and yet I was struggling on exactly how to go about putting this proposal together. I had recently received the Jacobs book, but only had time to read the first couple of chapters, so I picked it up, flipped to the chapter on planning groups, and withing 20 pages my pen was flying as I scribbled notes organizing my project. Two chapters later, all I had left to do was type the formal proposal.
The book is filled with practical ideas presented in an uncomplicated manner that allows for immediate practical application. I highly recommend it!
