Book Description
For parents, teachers, and other professionals seeking practical guidance about ways to help children with learning problems, this book provides a comprehensive look at learning differences ranging from dyslexia to dysgraphia, to attention problems, to giftedness. In The Mislabeled Child, the authors describe how a proper understanding of a childs unique brain-based strengths can be used to overcome many different obstacles to learning. They show how children are often mislabeled with diagnoses that are too broad (ADHD, for instance) or are simply inaccurate. They also explain why medications are often not the best ways to help children who are struggling to learn. The authors guide readers through the morass of commonly used labels and treatments, offering specific suggestions that can be used to help children at school and at home. This book offers extremely empowering information for parents and professionals alike. The Mislabeled Child examines a full spectrum of learning disorders, from dyslexia to giftedness, clarifying the diagnoses and providing resources to help. The Eides explain how a learning disability encompasses more than a behavioral problem; it is also a brain dysfunction that should be treated differently.

Essential reading for parents, teachers, and health care professionals alike, this highly readable text provides specific, practical approaches to recognizing and capitalizing on children's strengths in order to help them flourish. Excellent book with a novel approach........2006-12-08
The Eides take a new and refreshing approach to many of the concerns and challenges that impact our children's ability to learn. Informative and well-documented, this book is appropriate for anyone involved with children, including parents, teachers, therapists, and physicians. It is packed with important information backed by the latest research. Yet it is presented in a very readable fashion. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone who wants to find out more about the many and varied ways that children learn, including those with ADD, autism, sensory processing dysfunction, dyslexia, and those who are gifted.
The Mislabeled Child.......2006-11-05
Comprehensive resource, valuable for doctors, therapists, parents and teachers. Learning styles and sensory processing explained well. Invaluable to apply philosophy at any age.
Tools and information based on the latest research.......2006-10-15
THE MISLABELED CHILD: HOW UNDERSTANDING YOUR CHILD'S UNIQUE LEARNING STYLE CAN OPEN THE DOOR TO SUCCESS provides parents, teachers and educators a fine, clear guide to children who are different, how diagnoses often fail, and how to look beyond labels to find the basics of a child's problems. Flaws in current methods of evaluation and diagnosis, especially by non-specialists, accompany tools and information based on the latest research along with first-hand accounts by the children themselves.

"Dr. Bill" Sears, author of The Baby Book, beloved pediatrician, and creator of "attachment" parenting, teams with Lynda Thompson, an expert on attention deficit disorder and a proponent of neurofeedback, to provide parents with a highly positive, helpful guide to understanding and assisting the ADD child. Sears and Thompson carefully describe the ADD child's particular cluster of neurological traits--some positive (creativity, spontaneity, hyperfocus) and some potentially negative (selective attention, distractibility, hyperactivity). They emphasize that all of these traits can, depending upon how they are perceived and shaped, work to a child's advantage or disadvantage.
The authors provide insight into and an analysis of accurately diagnosing the ADD child, managing problem areas, and helping the child cope at school and at home. A thorough discussion about the use of stimulant drugs (Dr. Bill calls them "focus pills") describes appropriate use and misuse, and stresses that the drugs should be used in combination with other, more holistic therapies. Thompson's expertise in neurofeedback is presented as an effective alternative therapy. At a time when many schools have lengthy "Ritalin lines" in front of the nurse's office every day, Sears and Thompson's book is a welcome relief for parents looking for a wide scope of alternatives. --Ericka Lutz

Best one out there!.......2006-03-08
After reading almost all the ADD books out there, I turned to this one. I admit that many times I find Dr Sears to be a bit too permissible and touchy-feely. I was very surpised and pleased with this book! His approach to ADD as being more of an issue of trying to fit children into "one-size-fits-all" places in the classroom makes sense. After reading this book I felt that my children are just less mature and developed in some areas of their development. I felt that I could address their problems, and he offers many different approaches. Read this book!
Excellent book for the newest ADHD approaches.......2005-10-18
Of the many, many books I have read on ADD, this is by far my favorite. If you want to be educated on the topic for your child's best interest, this is the best place to start. There is no pressure to feel you should be giving your child Ritalin. There are so many positive alternatives and approaches that work. For example it really explains neurofeedback, which does work, I have been using this approach for my daughter with excellent results, no drugs!! It has become my significant bedtime reading.
Neurotherapy works.......2003-10-30
I didn't find this book until my son was a junior in high school. He was not a behavior problem and his IQ was above average but he just had trouble with listening and focusing. He was nearly failing all his classes at the time and was very upset because he truly wanted to do well. I reviewed the neurotherapy section of the book and decided to give it a try. He did the sessions over the summer and it made all the difference in school. He had good grades his senior year and now has a full academic scholarship in college. He is happy and proud of himself. This book helped me understand him better and gave me options. This book helped me help him. I highly recommend it.
The A.D.D Book--AWESOME!!.......2002-09-22
This book is the best book I have read about ADD/ADHD. I have purchased several books, and checked many out from the library. Each book seems to be "missing something". Well, this book covers it ALL! It contains information on what ADD is and what it isn't, strategies for improving behavior, how to deal with certain situations ie: telling lies, breaking things, etc. Also, there's information on "setting up for school success", neurofeedback, medication, diet and "understanding ADD laws". This book has information on these subjects, plus everything in-between! It's a very well written book that's easy to understand and is hard to put down! This book is interesting from page 1 through page 293! I recommend this book to anyone who has/knows a child with ADD/ADHD!!
A Balanced & Comprehensive Book.......2002-03-15
This is an outstanding well written book. Instead of only focusing on recommending medication, the authors are extremely broad in their recommendations, both for various treatments and for parents in managing ADD/ADHD children. I highly recommend this book.

Product Description
A major theme of this book is the use of computers for supporting collaborative learning. This is not surprising since computer-supported collaborative learning has become both a widespread educational practice and a main domain of research. Moreover, collaborative learning has deep roots in Asian educational traditions. Given the large number of researchers within this field, its scope has become very broad. Under this umbrella, one finds a variety of more specific topics such as: interaction analysis, collaboration scripts (e.g. the Jigsaw script), communities of practice, sociocognitive conflict resolution, cognitive apprenticeship, various tools for argumentation, on-line discussion or collaborative drawing tools (whiteboards), collaborative writing and the role of facilitators. Most research work on collaborative learning focuses on interactions rather than on the contents of environments, which had been the focus in the previous decades of learning technology research. However, there is no reason to focus on one aspect to the detriment of the other. The editors are pleased that the selected papers also cover multiple issues related to the storage, representation and retrieval of knowledge: ontologies for learning environments and the semantic web, knowledge bases and data mining, meta-data and content management systems, and so forth. This publication also reveals a growing interest for non-verbal educational material, namely pictures and video materials, which are already central to new popular web-based applications. This book includes contributions that bridge both research tracks, the one focusing on interactions and the other on contents: the pedagogical use of digital portfolios, both for promoting individual reflections and for scaffolding group interactions.

tells it like it is.......2007-01-05
This book gives the most effective and understand-able description of the life situations, thought processes, and what it's really like to be an adult ADD so that a person who is NOT adult ADD can grasp a bit of what it really is - descriptions that even someone who really doesn't have a clue - in every day - average joe kind of terms, with no medical jargon or words you have to look up.
Make this one your first choice to understand ADD.......2006-05-29
My attempt to come to understand what ADD is all about has proved helpful thanks to this little book. This is the first book I read on the topic, and I found it informative and educational. It is geared towards those who struggle with the disorder, with its simple format, its gentle repetition of items, its lack of huge medical terms and concepts, and its call to co-workers and peers for sympathy towards the person handicapped in this unique fashion. I openly recommend it to anyone searching for a primer on the topic.
Helpful Reference.......2001-01-12
A good complement to the ADD Bible 'Driven to Distraction', 'Adult ADD' provides a more balanced, objective overview of the disorder called Attention Deficit Disorder. It is not biased, and fits its boast to be 'made for the ADDer'. This book also helps introduce non-ADDers to the fact that there is such a thing as ADD. Those who don't believe that ADD is real are illogical and are too emotional, and their minds are closed to new facts discovered after a long period of mindless human self-shrouding.
Simply a sham.......2000-10-11
This book shows that there is a possibility to use psychology as a tool for duping people. Most sincere psychologists do not believe that Adult ADD exists for it, apparently, involves metabolic/chemical traits only found in youth.
Don't buy this book and don't buy into the idea. Ask you psychologist for evidence!
THANK YOU THOMAS, MICHELE AND RANDY!.......2000-07-18
I am very glad I found this book. At a time that I am upset about my past, confused about the present and hopeful about the future, this book is helping me understand the condition I was diagnosed with - ADD. Having just started my treatment, I was looking for a book that I could use to learn more about ADD. Still having difficulty in focusing and being patient enough to read well, I found this book designed in a way that helped me comprehend the information. Lists, highlighed areas, short paragraphs, fairly large print and other editing with an ADD reader in mind was greatly appreciated! The tips provided on addressing ADD related problems in many aspects of life are great. So many times I would directly relate to the stated problem and be so relieved as I continued to read the suggestions on handling the situation. I wish to publicly thank the authors of this book and ask them to consider an update or follow-up edition.

Customer Reviews:
Biased against medication.......2007-07-06
I purchased this book because I found "The Everything Parent's Guide to Children with Dyslexia" very useful and unbiased. However, this book was written by a different author and clearly biased against medication. I agree that medicating children should be a last resort, however, when I read on page 141 that this author says that "Ritalin has been called 'a chemical lobotomy' because the results are similar" to surgical lobotomy, I lost faith in her objectivity. If you want a book to support your decision to not medicate, this book is for you. If you want an objective analysis of the alternatives, go somewhere else.
The perfect guide for ADHD conspiracy theorists.......2006-11-27
This is the ideal book for people who'd like to tell others that their pediatrician or child study team has it all wrong because their kid actually has heavy metal poisoning, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, bad nutrition, ineffective parenting, creative genius, or an alternative learning style.
The author writes well and does offer some useful suggestions in child behavior management. However, she appears to have done only the minimal research into ADHD that is required to take snappy pot shots (often in the form of call-outs) at anything that passes for accepted wisdom in this field.
No doubt there is room for debate, but there are many much more informative, more balanced resources if you are genuinely interested in helping a child diagnosed with ADHD. If, on the other hand, you want at all costs to avoid accepted medical treatment -- or are trying to undermine someone else's attempts to help a child -- this is the book for you.
You HAVE to read this before medicating your child.......2005-09-22
I will just put my letter to Dr. Sonna. It sums up the way I feel about this book. This book literally changed my son and I's lives. You owe it to your child to read this before you medicate them. Please trust me on this.
Dear Dr. Sonna,
I had to send you this email because I'm about to burst with gratitude. Your book was so insightful, so down-to-earth, all the things a parent could wish for when they are broken-hearted and travel-weary from searching for answers. I am actually going to take this book to my son's teacher and gently encourage her to read it.
I especially enjoyed and appreciated the fact sections throughout and how you encouraged parents to become lobbyists and advocates and pointed out the built-in flaws in our legislation that allows for pharmaceutical companies to benefit from the way diagnosis is currently set up. I agreed whole-heartedly with all of your suggestions and was delighted to see someone not shy away from what could be deemed politically-charged statements.
So excuse my run-on sentences and please know that you have shored me up when I needed it the most, which of course means you have shored up my son. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for reminding me I am his only true advocate in a way no one else will ever be. What a wonderful gift you have and how fortunate we are that you chose to share it. I sincerely hope that many blessings come your way for the good work you have done.
Much Gratitude,
Cathy Piper-Lally
New Book, Old Problem.......2005-04-04
Finally someone has written a book that seems to understand the problems that parents and kids have dealing with ADD. She knows that medication is not the only answer to ADD and in fact, bravely offers better solutions by way of food, nutrition, sleep, and PATIENCE...all things that can be done without chemical interventions and will bring about lasting life changes.

A Dyslexic Reading about Dyslexia.......2005-04-07
I am a 20 year-old Dyslexic currently going to school to become a Special Education teacher with am emphasis on Learning Disablilites. I recently had to do a paper and presentation on Dyslexia and came across this book in my college's library. I found this book very interesting and full of helpful information, and the best thing about it was i could understand everything the author was saying. I highly reccomend it to any parent, teacher, or Dyslexic to read.
Informative !.......1997-09-18
As a mother of a 10 yr old newly diagnosed dyslexic , I found this book informative and easy to read. I particulary like the sections on visual and auditory dyslexia. So much of it decribes our son.The only part that I found the author over emphasized is the fact that kids are often misdiagnosed.Every chapter had that in it,which is important but in my case we already knew my son has dyslexia.I also thought it could have contained more information on symptoms and various testing information for evaluation of dyslexia.but overall I enjoyed the book very much. Its worth buying.

Real Help for Real Parents.......2000-09-01
As a parent, I've read lots of parenting books. Most of them seem to tell you what to think and what to do, and often give advice that doesn't really fit for me or my children. But this one encourages you to think for yourself, and to really observe and understand your child, to figure out what works with him or her. I love it. Reading it is like having a chance to talk things over with someone who really knows what being a parent is like. I felt very helped by it, and very much liked the authors respectful tone.
All this, and it's short, and easily readible - very important for tired, busy parents!
I think this is a wonderful book is perfect for mothers and fathers who have a child up to three years old.
Great resource for parents!.......2000-08-18
This is a great resource for parents! I like how it encourages you to get to know your baby as an individual so that you can know how to respond. I've noticed how different kids react so differently to the same situations...now I understand better why that's so. This book can save parents a lot of headaches in frustration over figuring out their kids.

Book Description
Attention Deficit Disorder (A.D.D.) is now recognized as the commonest cause of school under-achievement and behaviour difficulties in schoolchildren. It affects 5-10% of children aged 5-18 years - that is, the same proportion as asthma. Australia, like other countries, is undergoing a rapid increase in awareness of this condition amongst child-care professionals and parents. New parent support groups have been formed throughout Australia. There is regular coverage of the condition on radio and television and in newspapers and popular magazines. In All About A.D.D. Mark Selikowitz notes changing attitudes towards the diagnosis and treatment of A.D.D. among the ranks of paediatricians. This recent focus on A.D.D. proves that there is a need for an up-to-date, comprehensive and practical guide covering the condition in a balanced and authoritative manner. The book will be useful for parents as well as health professionals - doctors, psychologists, speech therapists, etc. - and educators. The book is of particular relevance to Australian readers, but will also be of interest and value to readers in the USA and the UK.
