Book Description

Normally confident moms and dads grow weak-kneed when their children enter--gasp!--puberty. Barbara and Dennis Rainey, parents of six teenage or older children, map out the unfamiliar, demanding landscape of both pre-adolescence (ages 10-12), as well as the teen years that follow. "Preadolescence is when convictions are shaped; adolescence is when convictions are tested," they advise parents. In Parenting Today's Adolescent the Raineys help children and parents build a satisfying relationship while forging a vision for a productive, God-honoring life-before, during, and after adolescence.

5 out of 5 stars A must have book for every parent!.......2007-08-11

I am halfway through this book and have found it to be filled with great advice in helping me raise my five children. They aren't quite yet in the preadolescent age, but soon and I am preparing. This book is based on Christian values and refer to a lot of scriptures. Even if your family isn't Christian or really religious in your everyday living, this book will still make sense and give you some encouragement that you can make it through the teenage years with success. Sticking to convictions you set with yourself, your children can work.

5 out of 5 stars Great book..........2007-01-25

I was really concerned about how to deal with a lot of issues with our daughter and purchased this book and even though I have only read about 1/3 of the book it is GREAT! I like the way it is written, the scenarios and suggestions are down to earth and real and I intend to use the methods presented in the book when I am faced with adolescent challenges.

I love purchasing from Amazon it was very simple and straight-forward and the book quality was great!

5 out of 5 stars Indispensible Resource.......2006-02-25

If ANYONE ever felt the need for a parenting "How-To", this is it!! Not for the faint of heart though - as it pulls no punches and advocates a tell-all approach to upcoming obstacles and pitfalls in a teen's life vs. leaving up to chance or peer-information or just plain ignorance. Taboo topics such as masturbation are addressed with exact advice and timing suggested. The philosophy is "Don't leave anything to chance - inform your child BEFORE it happens while encouraging serious brainstorming and promoting action plans to head off destructive events that are ultimately inevitable." Another issue addressed is virginity and the distinction between being a virgin and actually being PURE. Empowerment is key - for the child as well as the parent - in the face of a permissive society which shapes our children's perceptions of values and morals. Of course, the foundation of this book is the ultimate Rule Book of all things in life - the HOLY BIBLE. But even non-Christians who want a guide on how to teach good morals and values to their teen who is trying to make sense of: 1)where they belong and 2)what they should do in this crazy world will find this book to be a true treasure. I have recommended to it countless parents and am thankful I didn't find it too late...

If you have kids and care at all about what challenges may come to them in the teen years, you need this book! It is THE most helpful book I have read on child-rearing. It really opens your eyes to what is out there, what your children need, and what you need to do. Thank God for this book! And thank you Dennis and Barbara!

Book Description

If you have a teen or pre-teen, you recognize the phenomenon already-perhaps without even knowing it has a name. "The second family," as uncompromisingly described by renowned therapist Dr. Ron Taffel is the immense collective power of the peer group and pop culture-a force so pervasive, it threatens to, and often succeeds in, overwhelming the first family of adults at home and in school. Derived from thousands of interviews with kids and adults, The Second Family uses real-life, sometimes graphic examples to bare the truth about the world of adolescence today and to illuminate the new set of rules by which kids operate. The second family can be scary to adults. While many parents bury their heads, insisting "not my child," Taffel reveals that even "good" children: Chronically lie without a trace of guilt Have sex at astonishingly early ages Do drugs and alcohol not to be bad but simply because they are thereYet there are healthy aspects to the second family that often go unrecognized: A secret moral code of peer support that will surprise you Boys and girls as best friends Boys taking care of friends in emotional need Girls becoming powerful group leaders A social structure for teens that provides a type of intimacy, support, communication and honesty he or she can't find anywhere else. It is impossible to understand today's teens or preteens without understanding the Second Family. Taffel opens a window into a closed world of frightening dangers and equally uplifting possibilities.

5 out of 5 stars Important and timely book for parents of teens.......2005-08-27

I am a psychologist that works with teens and their families. This is an important book for therapists and families alike. Dr. Taffel explains the "second family" world of the teen. Both the negative as well as the positive aspects of this world. Dr.Taffel gives practical suggestions on how to work with the second family in order to maintain some healthy connection between the teen and the "first family".

5 out of 5 stars Author of Survival Meditations for Parents of Teens.......2005-02-11

Another sure winner from Dr. Taffel who always seems to hit the mark.I recommend this to many of the families with teens who I seen in counseling as it offers a real-life look into their world. Absolutely one of the best in his field.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for individuals working with adolescents.......2001-12-06

Dr. Taffel and Melinda Blau offer realistic scenarios and situations today's teens are encountering. Counselors, parents, educators, and any others associating with youth will be enlightened (and perhaps concerned) by what the authors so candidly offer. It can be a tough world for our young people -- here are some ideas as to how to reach your teen and perhaps make a start at understanding their world. This book is a must-read for people who work with pre-teens and adolescents.

5 out of 5 stars Peers for Positive Encouragement and Parents for Direction.......2001-09-05

Before reviewing this book, you should know that it includes extremely foul language, very explicit descriptions of sex acts, and other material that exceed what you would find in an R rated movie. Dr. Taffel acknowledges this, but feels like it is important to conveying his message. I agree.

Many aspects of this book could be describing when I was a teenager back in the 1960s. Dr. Taffel has a good ear for understanding how teens interact with one another.

Part of the growing up process is to begin to identify more with your friends than with your family, particularly if you are having a lot of conflict with your family. Along with the friends comes the popular teen culture of what is cool. Although the specifics of "cool" will constantly change, it is a way to feel like you fit in. That point connects to Dr. Taffel's more profound point. Teenagers are looking for comfort. This is both physical and emotional comfort.

Many parents fear the teen culture, assuming that behind each pierced body part can be found the core of a drug dealer, a temper, and miscreant. In fact, your teen's friends are probably a lot like your teen in attitude and focus. They may dress and act differently, but they have enough common ground to be comfortable with each other. More importantly, teens place a high reliance on being there for each other, being trustworthy, and keeping their word. In the family, a sense of being wronged can get in the way of behaving in that manner.

The problem today is that busy parents and teens spend little time talking about their reactions to what's happening to and around them. On the other hand, teens talk about it endlessly. The teen influence is going to win, unless the parents recast their attention and focus.

The best part of the book can be found in a series of practical suggestions for helping your teen earn your trust, how to work with your spouse and the school to support your teen, and how to be an effective part of your teen's life by showing genuine interest in your teen and her or his activities and concerns.

My main complaint about the book is that the title is very misleading. Most people will think the book is about step families. The subtitle is also misleading. It suggests that teens are directly concerned with challenging their families. Actually, the families, teens, and school can all work together in very harmonious ways. They often do, even when not coordinating with one another. Two good related books that will help you understand this one are Yes, Your Teen Is Crazy! and The Truth Will Set You Free.

After you finish this book, try to remember how your parents misunderstood the influence that your friends had on you. Where might you be making the same mistake now?

Encourage others to learn from experience, without taking on more risk than they can handle!

5 out of 5 stars Truly Unique and Very Important.......2001-04-20

Taffel seems to have put much of what I have been feeling intuitively about our current culture and our kids into words...and I am truly grateful. This book, along with Daniel Goleman's book on Social Emotional Intelligence and Jane Healy's books, Endangered Minds and Failure to Connect, makes our jobs as parents and teachers in a technological world a bit clearer.

The Second Family gave me "spine" as a parent and has opened avenues for working with schools and other parents to offset so much of what is troubling about some of the "second families" our kids are curious about or are already involved in.

Afraid to Eat, by nutritionist Frances M. Berg, an internationally known authority on weight and eating, challenges America's obsession with weight and documents the terrible harm done by the quest for thinness. Afraid to Eat presents a convincing and terrifying message: diets don't work; in fact, they are killing children. The statistics are terrifying, riveting, angering. One in five teenagers is overweight. By age 11, most girls are no longer eating normally and many have potentially fatal eating disorders. Two-thirds of teenage girls in the U.S. have abnormal eating behavior, and half are severely undernourished. More and more teens are smoking for weight control. And the majority of children and adolescents have become afraid to eat.

Berg examines four major problems: eating disorders, dysfunctional eating, size prejudice, and being overweight. She discusses the forces that have contributed to these problems, and provides workable approaches to helping children learn to eat normally and attain the Canadian "Vitality" model of wellness: eating well, living actively, and reducing stress.

Book Description

Young people today are growing up with a deep fear of fat. It's a fear that consumes them, shatters lives, and even kills. They live in a culture that tells them their bodies are wrong and promotes destructive values through media, advertising and entertainment industries.

"Children and Teens Afraid to Eat: Helping Youth in Today's Weight-Obsessed World" offers the nutrition profession's strongest challenge to date to America's obsession with thinness, laying bare its tragic results. In this book Frances M. Berg, a licensed nutritionist and adjunct professor at the University of North Dakota School of Medicine, extensively documents the harm done in children's lives. Berg says it is a serious health crisis when more than two-thirds of high school girls are dieting, less than half are fully nourished, one-third are smoking, and one-fifth take diet pills, all in their desperate drive to be thinner. Teenage boys mirror these problems to a lesser extent.

Now in its third, completely revised and updated edition, this book shines the spotlight even more clearly than before on the six major problems driving this crisis — dysfunctional eating, undernourishment of teen girls, hazardous weight loss, eating disorders, size prejudice and overweight. All are increasing and striking at ever younger ages.

In the second half "Children and Teens Afraid to Eat" gives clear guidelines in how to deal with this crisis in health-centered ways. Thus, it offers more than a penetrating analysis of a major public health problem — it is also a how-to book of practical solutions, with action steps that parents, teachers, counselors and health providers can take now to promote health and well-being. The earlier edition, "Afraid to Eat: Children and Teens in Weight Crisis" is being used extensively in schools, health clinics and in-service training programs across the U.S. and Canada.

Berg's companion book "Women Afraid to Eat: Breaking Free in Today's Weight- Obsessed World" documents the same problems for women. Both books show how the medical profession's insistence on ideal weight as a national priority has reinforced and validated the obsession with size and shape. But instead of improved health, the efforts to help people manage their weight have backfired, failing at weight loss and contributing to an epidemic of body dissatisfaction.

Berg who is editor of Healthy Weight Journal advocates a health at any size approach in which people of all sizes receive consistent messages to "eat well, live actively and feel good about yourself and others," based on the Canadian Vitality program. To normalize eating, parents are urged to first end their own dieting, then teach children regular eating habits and to tune in to hunger and fullness signals.

Together the two Afraid to Eat books, both with 21st century copyrights, offer a treasure trove of new information, charts, tips and how-to suggestions. They provide a wealth of research and insight for speakers, writers and students at all levels. Both are highly recommended by health, nutrition and library sources for both consumers and professionals. Excerpts available online at the website.

Two important guides to weight and eating are presented in these excellent surveys by Frances Berg. Children And Teens Afraid To Eat (0-918532-55-8, ...) examines six major eating and weight problems, from undernutrition of teens to eating disorders and obesity, blending statistics with a survey of underlying social causes and the actions which need to be taken to help teens. Women Afraid To Eat (62-0, ....) documents the physical and psychological harm done by social images which focus on the detriments of eating. From fad diets to weight prejudices, this tells women how to break free of weight obsession.

5 out of 5 stars Children & Teens Afraid to Eat, Helping Youth in Today's Wei.......2001-01-15

Without a doubt, this book should be reading material for all parents before their first child is born.

We want to think our youth are active and healthy. During my years of teaching, I have been more and more disturbed at inactivity of our children, disruption of normal eating, and the amount of fat and sugar calories served in school lunch rooms.

The food the children who carry their lunch bring from home can be nourishing, but parents might be surprised if they watch their children eat. A child's lunch sack might have a good turkey sandwich with greens, two large cookies, a bar of candy, and a soft drink. The child almost always has the candy ond/or cookies at recess. When lunchtime comes, he often throws that good sandwich in the trash with the apple. The food he brought from home has now become two cookies, candy, and a soft drink.

During recess too many children are inactive. Day after day, we watched the same ones stand around talking all recess while they eat their candy or cookies. After observing this for a few years, we scheduled a quarter-mile run twice a week and a full mile on Friday for P. E. Also, three times a week we have exercises appropriate to the age groups. You'd be surprised how many look forward to all the activity once they get used to it. We think it also stimulates brain activity in the classroom.

On the other hand, there are the healthy, active children who might have a cookie at recess, then play hard. They eat their sandwich and apple at lunch and the cookies and are eaten or saved for after school. In these children's lunch boxes there is porbably no candy. What's happening here? Berg says studies show that parents that don't "bug" their children about eating, produce children who don't have hang-ups about eating.

Berg writes that research shows that family attitudes can play a big part in the future eating patterns of their children. When a healthy baby's hunger is satisfied, it will then stop drinking. Parents who "urge him to finish the bottle, disguise cereal with applesauce to get it down" and thus feel frustrated for fear the baby isn't eating enough, is teaching the infant that it's important to eat more than his body needs. All parents should read carefully and think about what Berg has to say.

A parent who "hesitates to let a chubby toddler have seconds, makes a preschooler stay at the table until she finishes her peas, insists that the child eat `two bites of each food,' or lectures a school-age child to get him to drink his milk...is overmanaging, and it teaches children to ignore their natural signals of hunger and satiety."

By allowing a child to listen and heed these natural signals, Berg tells us that this is an important way to begin the youngster on a lifetime of healthy eating patterns.

Americans serve too large portions. A friend of mine returned from a long vacation in England and remarked that she didn't see an overweight English person all the time she was there. I said I was surprised, I always thought Britons were gluttons. She said she did, too, but she didn't see any.

Berg tells why. "A Healthy Weight Journal subscriber in London sent me an article titled: `Portions all out of Proportion' that decried `America's elephantine cuisine.' The writer compares national foods: hot dogs (350 calories in the U.S. versus 150 calories in Britain), cookies (493 vs. 65), ice cream cone (625 vs.160), muffin (705 vs. 158), and a meal of steak and fries (2,060 vs. 730). Until recently, our very large muffins were called "jumbo muffins," the article notes, now they are simply `muffins.' " Apparently, we are the ones who have become the nation of gluttons.

Berg says that even some our food that is considered healthy, non-junk food is astoundingly high in calories. And the more a child above the age of 3 is served, the more he eats. Big portions promote over-eating. Berg says studies show that our school-age children are getting heavier every year. Younger and younger children are becoming anorexic to stay slim, an astounding number alternately diet and binge. These patterns used to be found among those high school age and older, now they appear among elementary children.

Berg says problems such as eating disorders, dysfunctional eating, undernutrition of teenage girls trying to be thin, hazardous weight loss, and size prejudice all are increasing. Surprisingly, all that can be prevented. The author, Francie Berg, when asked why she wrote this book, says she grows more and more concerned about the appalling research on children and youth eating problems. The true facts were there, but no one was telling those who need to know: our parents and teachers.

Now that she's telling us-we need to listen.

Berg's research is well done. Anyone who doubts what she writes, can read the studies for themselves as her sources are well documented.

5 out of 5 stars A cultural commentary with practical advice.......2000-04-06

To be overweight is to fail" . It sums up our society's attitude towards eating and body size today. This is a quote from 'AFRAID TO EAT: Children and Teens in Weight Crisis' by Frances M. Berg. While the book is a cultural commentary, it is also filled with practical advice on ways to prevent eating disorders, obesity, and dysfunctional eating.

The first step to help, is to help understand the roots of the problem. This book does that. It points out the many ways in which we are not nurturing our children, particularly our girls. We are a society that has become fatter and fatter, yet simultaneously bombards our kids with the message that they need to achieve a body size and shape that is biologically unsustainable for the majority of them. This may be the seed for eating disorders. How high levels of obesity and disordered eating and starving teens can coexist is explained. AFRAID TO EAT explores the many forces at play....cultural expectations, media, the role of family and athletics, peer pressure, and more. It explores the issue of size rejudice and lifestyle choices, both of which lead to eating disorders and obesity.

The second half of the book focuses on how to prevent eating disorders, how to make changes to promote normal eating where it doesn't exist, and how to intervene with childhood obesity. There are guidelines for healthy food choices, designs for new health approaches for families, how to include schools in prevention programs, and finally a call to action that challenges us to make changes in attitude (e.g. a greater appreciation for healthy lifestyles versus being thin), lifestyle (e.g. active living, improving phys ed programs in school), prevention (e.g. by promoting healthy attitudes and lifestyles and developing special prevention programs for schools and communities), health care (e.g. reduce size prejudice in health care, focus on improving health, not on ineffective weight loss) and knowledge ( e.g. improved communication to consumers, better education in medical school).

There is useful information in this book not only for a parent, but also for teachers and health care workers. Perhaps after reading it you can share it with your school nurse or phys ed teacher. I am sure you will find its approach not only informative but practical and useful. The word 'vitality' is used a lot in this book as it helps us focus eating away from dieting and size/shape obsession towards eating that promotes a healthy and 'vital' lifestyle.

I work as a professional nutritionist and see firsthand the consequences of the fear of eating. This book takes a big stab at addressing the revolutionary changes that need to be made in our personal and societal approaches towards eating. I recommend it to any who want to join in that revolution, or simply wish to help their own kids enjoy nutritious, guilt free eating for life.

My granddaughter loves to read, however, she just does not read something she does not like; she puts it down. She will be 14 years of age in Oct.
She related to me that she read A Treasury of Miracles for Teens in one
setting. She said it was inspiring, but also was a good ending. She said
that it made her realize that miracles happen every day, some are more profound perhaps than others, but miracles can happen and they can happen
in a teen's life as well. She also related to me it help to increase her
faith in a God of Now-Miracles. She said it was not "preachy or judgmental" or overly religious, but related what was going on in the now.

This is a great book. I just wish there was more. It's a great faith builder and its not for just teens, it's for anyone. I'm looking forward to sharing this book with my kids.

5 out of 5 stars Great reading.......2003-08-01

This is a very mis named book. It is not just for teens, but for anyone who needs a ray of sunshine in their life. In each of these true stories, we see God intervening in the lives of young people, often through angelic appearances, in such a way that lives are saved, or more importantly, changed. A runaway boy finds his way home, a hapless girl is able to escape an attacker in a way that could only be a miracle. A sister's prayer for her brother gives them extra time together. A girl who should not have even lived regains the use of her legs.

***** Real life is filled with the incredible, the miraculous. Many people want to dismiss the coming generations as being godless heathens. As long as there are a few who sparkle as the ones in this book, and as long as there is a God who has such great love for them, though, there is hope and there is joy. *****

If you are the parent of a teenager, you should read "When Your Teen is Struggling." So much is covered about the struggles teens go through at some point while growing up that you will most likely see an example of your teen somewhere in the book. Teens struggle with so many different issues while growing up that it is sometimes very difficult as a parent to know quite what to do. Mark Gregston wants to help struggling parents and teens.

Mark Gregston is the founder and executive director of Heartlight Ministries, a residential counseling facility for adolescents with difficulties. He and his wife, Jan, have advised youth for more than 30 years, and have put their experiences and knowledge together to help the rest of us when we try to help our own struggling teen. Even if you feel your teen is not struggling, I believe there is knowledge to be gained by reading Gregston's experiences. Gregston's advice is practical, consistent and solid. It is full of hope and done in a loving yet firm manner. Through the years, Gregston has tried some things that have worked and some that have not, and he shares these encounters so we might learn from his trials and errors.

If you have a teen of your own or work with teens, I highly recommend Mark Gregston's book on the struggles of teens. You will be a more informed and knowledgeable advisor for your teen when he needs your help the most, even though he may not realize it or acknowledge your invaluable intervention, if done properly. Growing up can be difficult, and knowing what works and what does not can be a lifesaver for your young adult. I encourage you to read "When Your Teen is Struggling."

5 out of 5 stars Great Resource.......2007-04-28

When parents are facing an out of control teenager, they are either blamed or excused. This book does neither. Instead, it is a invaluable tool that can help families get back on track. Gregston tells like it is. No sugar coating.

5 out of 5 stars Read about struggling teams to gain hope.......2007-02-10

If the world of advice for parents of teenagers is a vast ocean, then Mark Gregston's book, When Your Teen Is Struggling, is an island that rises above.

At two hundred pages, it's small enough to be read in a few sittings, but don't let the size fool you. The book is packed with useful insights into the lives of troubled teens, giving parents a solid understanding of potential problems and suggestions for meaningful solutions. For parents lucky enough to have a non-troublesome teen--if such a thing exists--then this book is still worthwhile reading, if only to be forearmed and forewarned against what can and does happen to some kids as they mature.

Gregston's credentials are impeccable. He is the founder Heartlight Ministries, a Christian center for teens. He works with families dealing with all kinds of problems. But most importantly he's been in the trenches for years dealing with the issues he writes about. When you read the book you get the sense that you're hearing a sage talk to you one-on-one. I lost count of the examples he provided, but I appreciated his candor in describing his lessons learned from his experiences, both good and bad.

It's rare when a self-help book is hard to put down. Gregston draws you in with heartfelt stories that are sometimes horrifying, sometimes amazing, but always intriguing. When you've finished reading the book, you'll surely want to tell a friend about it. It's that kind of book.

As for weaknesses in the text, they are small and few. The book could have benefited from a couple of figures or diagrams to help communicate some of the stepwise processes he offers. Gregston might have also used numbered lists on occasion to help clarify things here and there.

Some non-Christians might be bothered by the frequent use of scriptures to help convey a message, but I would argue that all references to God could be omitted, and the book would still stand tall.

I just have to say to the below poster....WAKE UP!!! Learning how to put a condom on at age 14 is not going to make you go out and have sex! Believe it or not, there are 12 years olds out there who are sexually active! How can educating kids about the real world be a bad thing? I had sex ed when I was 14, and learned how to use a condom properly. Did it make me go out and have sex? No! Did I have parents who talked to me about sex? Nope. Whether or not there is sex ed in schools, kids are going to think about sex, we need to atleast give them the correct information. Reading this book is not going to put ideas into a teenagers head that arent already there, and niether is sex ed class.

this book is what's wrong with our youth. the fact that I was embarassed last summer at work because i was a virgin is beyond me. this book says to teenagers "look, forget about love it's about sex!" i cannot beleive my school had a sex education class... IN 9th GRADE! i hope it' s not too late for parents to look at what their children are doing to themselves. Sex is of constant talk in the teenage youth and the pressure is far beyond what most parents are in denial about. The rap music thats so popular isnt making it much better, either. Ever listen to what your teen listens to? the lyrics? Ever watch MTV with them? Would you watch MTV with them? Look at the "role models" of our younger society (50 cent, britney spears, etc). i can't believe people bought this book for their teens. if i were a parent i would not make the same mistake mine did by allowing a school to teach me at age 14 how to put condoms on. the far less you know, the most likely you'll be able to stay away with it! and please, start putting good music into your teen's heads!!

3 out of 5 stars What teen fathering is about.......2007-01-18

I purchased this book for a teen student of mine who will soon be a father. Here's what he had to say:

The book Teen Fathers Today, gives you some information about being a teen father. It gives real life situations of teen mothers and teen fathers. I liked how they gave some sort of info that helps you raise a child. I am a seventeen year old and about to have a baby in five months. I read the book because my teacher thought it might help me out a little. The book really did. It explains the role that the dad has on the baby's life. What I liked about the book is it covered some helpful topics like caring for a baby and financial issues. It also made me think of how good a father I could be to my offspring.
I didn't like the way it talked about unhealthy relationships a lot. It kind of said that most relationships don't work out with teens because of the sex drives teens have. I disagree because every relationship is different.
Overall, the information is a good source to help you out and teach you a little of how teen fatherng is going to be. In my opinon, teen fathers should consider reading this book.
