Clear and Concise Information You Can Use.......2006-10-10
I took a webinar based on this book and found the information presented intriguing enough to buy the book. It's a short read but filled with good, practical information. If there are certain people in your lives who rub you the wrong way, understanding how their style differs from yours could help to improve communication and make the relationship more effective and pleasant for both. This book was definitely worth reading and I've experienced benefits from it at work in a very short time.
Must read for every one..........2005-07-09
Of the several books I have studied on similar topics, this was one of the easiest to read through and apply. Although the title says People Styles at Work, it is equally applicable in personal life as well. The focus on studying behavior and inferring "style" from the same is much easier accomplished than trying to figure out the "temprament style" based on Myers Briggs.
The two dimensions of Assertiveness and Responsiveness, and the concept of above / below the middle for each of these dimensions gives 4 quadrants; one for each of the styles. This makes it convenient to understand the 4 styles, and also the shades within the styles.
I have benefited tremendously - if you are new to this topic it will serve you well to take notes as you read; create a cheat sheet of the characteristics for each style. Then for some time carry the cheat sheet with you, and refer to it often as you observe people's behaviors. Over a period of time, you will pickup the nuances of how to recognize the styles, and succeed in your interactions with others - despite them, and despite yourself... Enjoy!
you have to read it !.......2005-04-26
the book is simple and the ideas are easy to applicate in the every day life , i've tried the method and have good results - Read it if you have problem to communicate with some of your colleagues and you need to work with them
Could save your sanity, and maybe your job!.......2003-11-13
Highly recommended. Several years ago, I had a clash of personal styles between my boss and me. I thought she talked like a kindergarten teacher, and she felt that I came on like a steamroller. She was familiar with the methods discussed in this book, although she learned them during a seminar at a former employer. This book helped turn a bad working relationship into an excellent working relationship, and may have saved my job. I learned to "flex" to my boss's style (and to her credit, she flexed somewhat to mine). I reread the book from time to time and try to practice what I've learned. I highly recommend the book to anyone who is running into "people problems" on the job or elsewhere.
A method that really makes a difference in the workplace!.......2003-01-15
One the best book and method on the subject I have read so far, and I have read quite a few. There are 4 main Communication Styles, and the best thing is that only observable behaviors are used to categorize people in one style or another. No messing around with people's phsyche, and finally a very simple method to effectively relate to other people in the workplace.
I am using Communication Styles with all my direct reports, during meetings, etc. It allows me to convey clearly my messages, and at the same time overcome communication styles differences. This simple method does makes a difference in my daily work not only as a manager but also in communicating with my peers.
This book is a must have in your management library at home.

Horrible Seller.......2007-09-23
The seller has refused to return my emails as well as failed to send me my purchase. I have asked for a refund and they have failed to do that too. Therefore, they made easy money without providing me the item I purchased for my current college course. I totally do not recommend purchasing any item from this seller. If you do, you take on the risk of not receiving anything!
Leadership.......2007-09-23
Haven't actually used this book yet for my class, but I'm sure it's a great textbook.
What a bunch of schlock!!!!.......2007-06-26
This is a required text for a business class at Lawrence Tech. University in Michigan. It is full of diagrams and charts and basic jargon-filled info that everyone should know without having to spend $135! And this is in the FIFTH edition, so that used books are hard to come by, and the price just goes up. If you are buying it you are probably forced to. So sorry! BORING, BORING, BORING, and just filled with common sense that one should know if one has ANY experience at all.
Maybe this would be useful for a writing course on how to bore students to death and make money by making new editions with little changes.
What a rip-off!

Fantastic update!.......2004-12-24
The 6th edition fixes some errors in the 5th edition. Most importantly, it provides an impressive update of the literature. Excellent resource for students in I/O psychology and HR programs.
Outstanding summary of the I/O psychology field.......1998-09-22
Wayne Cascio, acknowledged as a leader in the field of Industrial and Organizational Psychology, has written an excellent overview of the field. Cascio's writing style is clear and engaging. Although written as a textbook, this book can stay on any practitioner's bookshelf as a reference work, a condensed handbook covering most of the most common topics in I/O psychology. It assumes a graduate school level of familiarity with applied psychology and statistics.

Understanding Basic Human Behavior in the Workplace.......2006-09-26
"Organizational Behavior: An Experiential Approach" has rightfully earned its reputation as a practical applied OD Classic! While traditional primary and secondary education emphasize building mental libraries of `theoretical knowledge,' Osland, Kolb, and Rubin recognize that working professionals learn through applicable experiences that address real-world challenges--thus, `an experiential approach.' I have successfully used lessons from "Organizational Behavior: An Experiential Approach" during consulting engagements in both private and public sectors, in both for-profit and not-for-profit organizations, and in graduate business education. Consistently, through `experiential approaches' as described in "Organizational Behavior", adults learn more useful lessons from their experiences, learn what their lessons mean, learn how to generalize their learning for other applicable situations, AND apply more of their learning when they are back on the job. Experiential learning goes beyond merely increasing knowledge and actually changes individual (and organizational) behavior.
I highly recommend "Organizational Behavior: An Experiential Approach" for everyone working to achieve results through other people--and also for anyone seeking to better understand themselves and how they interact with other people.
Great book!.......2005-11-29
This book is great. I bought it thinking that I'd use it just for my organizational behavior class and I was wrong. The group exercises will definitely come in handy in future group assignments and in the workplace.

Book Description
Today's workforce is experiencing job burnout in epidemic proportions. Workers at all levels, both white- and blue-collar, feel stressed out, insecure, misunderstood, undervalued, and alienated at their workplace. This original and important book debunks the common myth that when workers suffer job burnout they are solely responsible for their fatigue, anger, and don't give a damn attitude. The book clearly shows where the accountability often belongs. . . .squarely on the shoulders of the organization.

A useful framework to address burnout........2006-11-06
"The Truth about Burnout" was written a decade ago, but its analysis and recommendations may be more valid today than they were when the book was published. The first couple of chapters are a bit tedious, but the book takes off once the authors start digging into causes of burnout and laying out ways to overcome burnout.
The authors describe the causes of burnout in terms of six mismatches between people and their jobs: "work overload, lack of control, insufficient reward, breakdown in community, absence of fairness, and conflicting values." These six mismatches provide a framework for developing interventions to address burnout and build employee engagement.
For me, the most encouraging feature of the book is the authors' suggestion that the intervention can be bottom up as well as top down. The authors provide roadmaps for both kinds of intervention.
One of the Best Books on a Pervasive Problem.......2006-02-21
Christina Maslach is well-known in psychology as the person who has championed the problem of burnout over more than two decades. For quite a time she was something of a lone voice.
Burnout is a prolonged response to chronic physical, emotional and interpersonal stressors at work, leading to exhaustion, cynicism and inefficacy. In a memorable term the authors describe it as erosion of the soul.
Burnout has to be seen in the larger organizational context of people's relationship with their work: it's usually the job and the organization rather than the individual, although there are clearly differences in individuals' resilience to burnout.
There are many symptoms of burnout, including trouble sleeping, constantly worrying, feeling unappreciated or "used" at work and feeling less effective or competent. Many people find that they easily becoming angry or irritated and altogether too many start drinking or abusing other substances.
Burnout is immensly costly, not just for individuals, but also for organizations. I agree with another reviewer who lamented the paucity of data on just how costly burnout is to a company's bottom line. But judging by the number of corporations now asking epxerts to go in and help them deal with the burnout problem, I think that the message is getting through.
This is an excellent overview of the problem nearly ten years ago. If anything, the situation is becoming worse, and Maslach, and now an expanding band of other psychologists has continued to do empirical research on the problem, and have been coming up with ever more sophisticated solutions.
But even with the passage of time, this book remains highly recommended.
VERY VALIDATING.......2005-10-04
tretise on what most of us already know about bureauracracies. I've not finished reading the "what to do about it." yet, but already know my first questions when contemplating a new job will be "How many people were fired or quit in the past 6-9 months?"
A Good Read!.......2004-03-02
Christina Maslach and Michael P. Leiter's groundbreaking book debunks myths about burnout and holds organizations accountable for this epidemic, which has swept the work world. The authors detail how organizations can treat and prevent burnout, and take a critical look at its deep-rooted causes, including lack of engagement and conflict between employees' values and their jobs. Conversationally and with great impact, the authors support their points and suggestions. We recommend this book to executives, managers and employees. Now go home and get some rest.
A REAL CURE FOR A MODERN DAY PYCHOLOGICAL EPEDEMIC.......2003-06-02
In the Truth About Burnout Drs. Maslach and Leiter propose the first real cure for burnout and the key to releasing peak potential in the workforce.
Much of the past advice on the topic of burnout focuses on how to help people cope with burnout. These techniques are useful and come in handy, but unfortunately they do not position or fortify people to reach higher levels of performance. Simply treating the symptoms of burnout is like giving someone a medicine that provides temporary relief from external signs that they have a cold. After the medication wears off, they still have a virus raging through their body that's slowing them down. Likewise the "virus" that causes burnout is disengagement with work and no matter what temporary relief solution we provide to ease the pain, in the form of workshops on how to cope and "employee assistance programs" at the end of the day the "virus of disengagement" is still alive and well and impairing performance.
This book is for anyone manager or individual contributor who has decided to stop coping and "sugar-coating" and instead seek a real and practical solution to burnout. I highly recommend it.

Useful.......2007-08-12
There are some other books out there on the same subject. Some, like "Toxic Coworkers," may do the job even better. But this is still a useful volume. As the Introduction notes (page 1): "This is a book about impossible people and how to cope with them." Coping is the center of this work--how to deal with workers who are difficult to work with. The idea? (Page 7): "Coping enables you and the Difficult Person to get on with the business at hand." "Win-win" is the goal. Is the advice useful? Each reader will have to decide for him/herself?
The book describes a variety of difficult types: hostile-aggressive, the complainer, unresponsive ones, wonderfully nice people who don't perform, the negativist, know-it-alls, and indecisive stallers. For each, the author describes the malady and then suggests how one might work with them to get the best out of them. The book closes, also, with ideas as to how one can manage one's own "defensive behavior" around such problem workers. The author concludes (page 214): ". . .many people just like you have found that coping effectively with difficult people is possible."
Final question: How well does the book succeed? Not bad, but the solutions will not convince all readers.
Dealing With Difficult People.......2007-05-09
Read about the different types of people in the world today, and find out ways to deal with difficult personalities.
Good coping strategies .......2007-04-13
I thought the parts of this book that described some of the different, difficult personalities was very good. I actually really thought it had something to offer and the strategies were practical. The insights though didn't stick and I think that you have to read this regularly to keep reminding yourself that all these people exist in the world (including you) and you are going to see them every day. Thats kind of a depressing thought actually. With all the other books I need to keep reading to remind myself about various insights I want to stay home.
I liked the concept of this book.......2007-02-05
The concept of this book is good. You can't change other people, and you can't always avoid them. The most realistic option is to have some coping strategies. I think the author outlined them well. I gave the book three stars, though, because the reading got to be tedious and boring. I've read similar books that are more enjoyable, either because you can identify the different personality type with humor, or because they explained the personalities more realistically with better situational examples. This book seemed a little dry.
Helpful advice .......2007-01-19
Bramson wisely uses the word 'coping'. That is he is not suggesting that one can really overcome or transform difficult people. He is speaking primarily about difficult people in the working place. The domineering aggressive abusive type should according to Bramson not be reacted to with anger and rage. One should also refused to be intimidated, and instead asset one's own views. The sniper who by little satirical remarks, and efforts at humor tries to hurt and diminish should be confronted and questioned as to his true intentions. The complainer should be opposed with positive ideas on the same project that the complainer is negative about. The know-it-alls, the silent- negative types, the indecisive also can in some way countered and dealt with.
Above all the aim must be to prevent these negative types from dominating one's own mindscape and action.
All of us confront in one way or another difficult people. And each of us is perhaps in a certain way a difficult person himself. This book is addressing a subject we all in some way know, and have connection with.
One other point. I have known and loved in my life very very difficult people perhaps beyond in a way described in this book. The fact is it is often what is difficult in them which somehow more strongly binds them to us.
This is a complicated subject about which there are worlds to be said.

- This book will help workers and employers all over the USA

An Inspiring Guide to Making Life Miraculous
"So much has been written about the negative aspects of today's work environments. Angels in the Workplace is an inspiring look at how ordinary people can make an extraordinary difference at their place of work."--Karol Emmerick, corporate director and former vice president and treasurer, Dayton Hudson Corporation
Angels do exist and they can transform your workplace. With these enchanting stories, noted business author and consultant Melissa Giovagnoli recounts the tales of ordinary people whose random acts of kindness have generated some extraordinary results. These people are living proof that there are angels among us, and Giovagnoli tells us how we might join their ranks. The author says that to be angels ourselves, we must shape our lives according to seven heavenly tenets: faith, hope, charity, courage, truth, trust, and love. Devoting a chapter to each virtue, Giovagnoli describes the miracles that living angels have performed on the job, and shows how we can put these virtues into practice in our own lives. It?s an inspiring work about renewing hope, creating a stronger sense of community, and redefining the meaning of success.

This book will help workers and employers all over the USA.......1998-12-19
Angels in the Workplace is by far the best book to come along in years! Workers and employers all over America will improve their attitude and working environment by reading this book. In a time where the knowledged-based workplace is imminent, employers and employees alike are looking for ways to enhance their work life. This is the way! Using Giovagnoli's action steps, your workplace will become a more spiritual and fulfilled place to spend your 40 hours a week.
A timely piece. It's got it all for a guidebook for the soul.......1998-12-07
With so little time spent on caring in the workplace, Giovagnoli shows us all that there are practical, powerful things we can all do daily to make a difference in our workplaces. The book was so well laid out and the stories brought me to tears as well as laughter. Great Angel Advice Corners at the end of each section really help bring the strategies she offers to life. I put the Action Strategies page up in my lunch room as Giovagnoli suggests and last week alone three people brought food treats for my department. For the first time in a long time, this Christmas at the office feels like there are people who care about each other. It's even getting to the point that I look forward to going to work to see what new idea someone has come up with--all from the strategies Giovagnoli recommends.
Wow! Great inspirational book. It made a difference........1998-12-07
This is the perfect gift for family, friends, colleagues. I even gave a copy to my boss. I like the way each belief--faith,hope, charity, courage, truth, trust and love have not only stories, but strategies to make them work in your work place. I turn to the book once a day to get ideas and inspiration.
Book Description
The bestselling author of How to Think Like Leonardo DaVinci shows how learning to juggle literally and metaphorically will help you become better at what you do, both in business and in life.
As we struggle to get more done in less time, to balance our work and our personal life, and to adapt to constant change, we often feel that we're "juggling too many balls." Now, in More Balls Than Hands, leading organizational consultant Michael J. Gelb, a former professional juggler, shows us how to keep all those balls in the air.
The first lesson in juggling is...let the ball drop. Beginning with this first counterintuitive lesson, Michael J. Gelb offers proven methods that organizations can use to create a "mistake positive" culture, showing how any business can flourish and succeed if it sets the stage for learning, growth, and innovation in the workplace. In addition, Gelb introduces five "Keys to High Performance Learning" that offer immediately applicable strategies for strengthening anyone's learning speed and power. For people eager to increase their learning potential, ratchet up their productivity, and teach others to do the same, More Balls than Hands communicates life lessons in a vivid, completely original, and utterly entertaining way.
Customer Reviews:
Liberate your Heart, Body, Mind, and Soul.......2006-02-17
If only I could have started my life with the wisdom in this magnificent book!
This important book by the best-selling author of "How to Think Like Leonardo Da Vinci" has many virtues, but its shining achievement is to introduce the reader to a "mistake-positive" way of life and being. In the time since reading it, I am finding myself transforming, in very positive ways, how I approach life, and how I interpret and experience myself and others. Increasing energy, enthusiasm, openness, and resilience to the challenges of life are a few of the benefits that have begun to manifest themselves. My personal and professional relationships are improving. I feel more alive and excited about my future than I have in years. While perfectionism has advantages, it also has many disadvantages-it can hold one back from full participation in life, and it can interfere with one's resilience in bouncing back from failures. This book is excellent medicine for perfectionists.
Michael Gelb is a pioneer in the fields of accelerated learning, creative thinking, and leadership development, and President of High Performance Learning, which he founded thirty years ago. In "More Balls Than Hands" (This title often generates laughs when I mention it to women!) Michael masterfully brings to life five principles of high performance learning and living:
1. Create a clear vision of what you want, and then keep comparing your vision with reality, thus stimulating your brain's natural success mechanism to bring reality in line with your vision.
2. Transform your attitude toward mistakes and failure, thereby liberating tremendous energy and enthusiasm for learning and growth.
3. Unleash your natural genius through the power of play.
4. Achieve more with less effort by cultivating relaxed concentration.
5. Develop your coaching skills so you can bring out the best in people at work and at home.
Throughout the book he ties all these themes together with the powerful metaphor of juggling. As he says at the end of the book:
"The juggling metaphor can serve as an inspiring reminder of the secret of life. Is there one word that expresses that secret? Yes. The word is *balance*."
This book is about much more than learning and juggling the demands of today's world. It is about the secret of life-how to live well and wisely, how to create the lives and world we want, written by someone who lives what he speaks. The book is a true education, a treasure trove of wisdom, rich with colorful, compelling examples and illustrations. A sheer pleasure to read!
A Good Read!.......2004-08-30
The best and most useful part of this book comes near the end, where author Michael J. Gelb gets down to basics and offers instructions on how to juggle. The first part of the book consists of a series of exhortations and homilies about the advisability of relaxing, letting yourself make mistakes, practicing to be perfect and other personal attitude guidance. Those who thirst for such encouragement will find the first part of this book a godsend. It includes quotations from Lao Tse, Vince Lombardi and Leonardo da Vinci. All of the advice is highly meritorious, even the advice that you ought to take a break or two every day to juggle. That looks like fun whether you favor New Age nostrums or not. We recommend this book to anyone who must multi-task. Even if juggling doesn't smooth out your work life, at least it will help you relax.
I'm Inspired!.......2003-08-31
Every time I read one of Michael's books, I feel inspired for greatness, and this book is no exception. Michael has a gift of taking things that are familiar and looking at and applying them in unique ways. In this book, Michael talks about the importance of creating mistakes in a safe environment and using them to accelerate learning to become a better leader, coach, parent, or person. He makes it feel safe to venture out into new territory by teaching that success means pursuing your goals and dreams with much childlike passion that success and failure become irrelevant. I especially love how he frames examples throughout the book with expert quotes that provide meaningful and often thought-provoking context. The quote by Dr. Glenn Doman, Institute for the Achievement of Human Potential, provoked a great family discussion about how important it is for a child to view learning as fun and the positive impact a person can have to help inspire that belief. In the last section of the book, Michael takes a unique approach to teaching juggling, in which he applies all the principles in the book. I never would have thought that dropping balls on purpose would help me learn to juggle, but it did. And it gave me a new confidence that I can do anything!
Metaphor of the Millennium.......2003-08-24
Michael Gelb has captured the metaphor of the millennium in juggling. It is something that jugglers and non-jugglers alike can relate to at a gut level, because most of us have anything but time on our hands. A single issue of the New York Times is said to contain more information than the average person in the Middle Ages was exposed to in a lifetime. And it just starts there. MORE BALLS THAN HANDS gives you more than just the metaphor, but stories and testimonials from the workplace, as well as practical coaching on how to juggle. The book is readable and doable, and can be enjoyed on many levels. The only thing that could make it even better would be illustrations for the tips on the advanced juggling beyond 3 balls. ...

Ten Years Is a Long Time to Wait for a Resource This Powerful. About a decade ago, Emotional Intelligence, (EI), was recognized to be a far better indicator of success in the work world than IQ. There remained a gap between theory and the effective application of EI. Until now. Dr. Reldan S. Nadler, world-renowned executive coach and speaker, built his star-performer reputation working with thousands of leaders using the principles of EI. Emotional Intelligence for leaders made simple .......2007-09-23
I use this book and other tools developed by Dr. Nadler in leadership development and coaching I provide and in my work in the Organizational Consulting Office at Edwards AFB and in private practice. The Leader's Playbook gives leaders the necessary tools to move their talents and strengths to a new and more effective level. He helps leaders to have a better understanding of "derailers" that can take even the most famous leaders into downfall. Using these tools will help every leader. If every leader were to grow in their emotional intelligence it would have an amazing impact on - not just the workplace - but our society! From Wikipedia, I submit these excerpts regarding leadership: "The ability to affect human behaviour so as to accomplish a mission designated by the leader" also "One of the differentiating factors between Management and Leadership is the ability or even necessity to Inspire. A Leader, one who can instill passion and direction to an individual or group of individuals, will be using Psychology to affect that group either consciously or unconsciously." I would say not psychology -- but their own personal mastery of emotional intelligence. Just read the book, apply what you read and see change happen!
Leaders' Playbook.......2007-09-17
Dr. Nadler's book "Leaders Playbook" is an easy book to read and also to apply the EI techniques and tools. I have used the book in both my coaching practice and as a University professor in my MBA courses on leadership. My clients and students enjoyed the assessment profile on being a Star Performer. Wonderful book with practical lessons on Emotional Intelligence. A must have for every Executive.

If you want to focus on the top five EI competencies top senior leaders expect from their staff, then this is the book to own. Reldan provides quick strategies and practical advices to go from awareness to skill level.
Excellent leadership guide.......2007-05-29
I rely on many of the ideas and techniques from Leaders' Playbook in delivering leadership workshops. It provides the kind of real-world guidance that is so often missing from leadership books. The tools and techniques are immediately applicable, and I've seen managers and leaders make tremendous gains from using these "plays" with their teams. This is an excellent resource for anyone looking to develop their leadership skills - from those new to a leadership role to the experienced leader looking to expand their tool kit.

A must read on developing emotional intelligence (EI) ..........2007-05-03
While there are hundreds of references, books, and articles based on Daniel Goleman's conceptualization of Emotional Intelligence (EI), I found Dr. Nadler's Leader's Playbook to be one of the most practical and helpful. Not only does he include detailed discussions of EI "stars" and the competencies that make them stars, but more importantly he also includes specific tools and strategies that coaches, managers, counselors, and others can use to help turn others into EI stars. Additionally, there are excellent assessment tools (e.g., EI Star Profile, Derailer Detector) that leaders or executive coaches and others will want to include in their toolboxes. His discussion of the "Assumption Ladder" and the "Emotional Audit" are two techniques/tools that I have personally added to my "toolbox," used, and have found this material, as well as so much more, extremely helpful.
