    Book Description

Interventions create solutions that alleviate or solve workplace problems. They cause change, small or large, due to improved performance and, thus, have an impact on individuals, groups, or organizations. The number of possible interventions is almost infinite, because any number of organizational, environmental, and people factors affect performance. Interventions facilitate change by interrupting poor behaviors, preventing errors, reducing conflict, or providing vision for the future.

Performance Improvement Interventions: Enhancing People, Processes, and Organizations through Performance Technology is a compendium of interventions based on the International Society for Performance Improvement's (ISPI) Human Performance Technology (HPT) model. After analyzing the workplace performance problem and its cause, HPT practitioners should possess sufficient data to select and design solutions, known as interventions. The HPT model is explained in detail in the ISPI companion book, Fundamentals of Performance Technology: A Guide to Improving People, Process, and Performance (2000).

Performance Improvement Interventions: Enhancing People, Processes, and Organizations through Performance Technology is designed as a desk reference of performance improvement opportunities for almost any need and occasion. The book identifies and explains common interventions by providing the definition and scope of each intervention as well as implementation guidelines. In addition, a job aid is provided for every intervention. Each section or cluster of interventions contains a case study to help the reader visualize implementation and its impact on the workplace.

The book also contains an intervention selection tool. Due to the enormity of intervention options, this tool helps HPT practitioners select the right intervention at the right time. The selection process outlines individual and group phases, and instructs practitioners that successful implementation requires consensus among all affected parties.

Performance Improvement Interventions: Enhancing People, Processes, and Organizations through Performance Technology contains useful information for all HPT practitioners—those who are just entering the field of HPT and those who have been implementing performance solutions for years.

5 out of 5 stars The most effective way to organize consultants knowledge.......1999-10-31

For a human performance methodologist this book represent the state of the art of the knowledge. For the first time you can have the whole map of knowlege in the world of intervention, organized in a systematic and logic way. I find this book wonderful to train and support the next generation of consultants, both in the university and at work. The book helps you to convince the client not to "jump" to any fashional intervention, and to have corelation between the "medicine" and the dyagnostic phase. And, above all, the book talks in an international language, which fits the time of globalization. Here, overseas, the book is written in a common terminology, that fits our culture. Any human performance technologist should have this book on his desk.

5 out of 5 stars An elegant solution for the front line manager.......1999-04-09

I am an operations officer for a large military technical maintenance organization.

If you are reading this review you are probably a leader and manager with some familiarity of organizational and human performance. You may also be looking for ways to increase your value to your team. If so, this book should be a tremendous help you.

The Intervention Resource Guide (IRG) is a work that should sit not on your bookshelf, but on your desk top as a ready reference. I will not attempt to evaluate each intervention, as valuable as they are (of the ones I have used), but choose to focus on the heart of the book, "Part One, Intervention Selection and Implementation" which includes the "Matrix of Interventions".

The editors have efficiently and credibly provided the leader-manager with the ability to make use of the proper intervention given the goal of: "Establishing, Improving, Maintaining or Extinguishing" performance in the "Business unit, Process, Work group, or Individual". All 50 interventions are evaluated for relevency against the above eight factors. By using their intervention selection model, any leader and manager should be able to select a proven intervention leading to a high probability of performance improvement. Conversely the avoidance of selecting the wrong intervention is just as valuable, and through use of the matrix, the leader should be able to avoid costly damage to the organization she serves.

The Intervention Resource Guide provides an elegant solution to the workplace manager that wants to make the best use of systematic performance improvement tools.

4 out of 5 stars What a great way to expand your own toolset........1999-03-12

I've been in the performance improvement world for 15 years and found the book a wonderful way to expand my knowledge beyond my set of experiences. I especially loved the case studies with the positive and negative examples. As someone who helps other performance technologists around the country, I will certainly recommend this as a great way to get the big picture do's and don'ts for an impressive number of tools.

4 out of 5 stars Great suggestions and case studies for my students!.......1999-03-12

As a professor at the State University of New York--Plattsburgh, I'm always looking for new case studies and ideas to share with my undergraduate students. The book clearly demonstrates what professionals in various fields are doing to improve structures within different contexts. Having worked with various non-profit organizations, this resource guide is useful both as a practioner and observer of organizational communication. Each of the proposed interventions clearly define, describe and apply techniques that could definitely improve communication within the workplace. I'm especially fond of the resources and references included at the end of each intervention.

5 out of 5 stars Very good reference for selecting possible interventions........1999-03-07

As a consultant in human reource management, productivity and quality improvement, I've found this book to be a valuable reference. I've often used it with clients as a starting point such as "Flow Charts" and "Process Mapping" with process improvement teams; and "New Employee Orientation" and "HRIS" with employment, training and development efforts. Recently, "Job Aids" was very helpful with a client who has high seasonal employment needs to assure good customer service and satisfaction. It's a good introduction to possible interventions. It gets people thinking. It provides good references for further learning and application. I've used it. I recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent HPI Resource .......2007-01-16

This is an excellent Human Performance intervention guide, and provides outlines from 25 experienced field-leaders. I have found it to be a good reference book to use for formulating the roadmaps for solutions to the most common organizational problems. It comes complete with a CDRom of the intervention maps and so is perfect for consultants and HPI specialists who travel. The interventions are easy to grasp, and easy to facilitate if one follows the protocol set out in each case.

My only gripe was a somewhat confusing and unecessary quote by one of the contributors named Lou Russell, who in an otherwise useful first chapter, quotes Brigadier General William (Billy) Mitchell in 1910 as saying that using airplanes to sink battleships was "Damn nonsensical." She used the quote in the context of Mitchell being unwilling to continue learning, and infers that Mitchell missed out on the future as a result. Nothing could be further from the truth, as Brig. Gen. Mitchell was a proponent of battle aviation at sea among his peers. In fact, it was Mitchell who requested the use of a captured German battleship, successfully used to demonstrate to the US Army and Navy, that investment in aircraft carriers and aircraft to bomb adversaries was paramount to the survival of the US. Hopefully the nonsense can be taken out of the next printing, as it ridicules the name of a substantial military contributor and innovator of the 20th Century. A slander at best. To use your words, it is indeed 'good for us to keep learning,' Lou Russell, however we perhaps ought to be more thorough in our outcomes. Otherwise an excellent book, well worth the price.

        Book Description

Through the concept of “social choreography” Andrew Hewitt demonstrates how choreography has served not only as metaphor for modernity but also as a structuring blueprint for thinking about and shaping modern social organization. Bringing dance history and critical theory together, he shows that ideology needs to be understood as something embodied and practiced, not just as an abstract form of consciousness. Linking dance and the aesthetics of everyday movement—such as walking, stumbling, and laughter—to historical ideals of social order, he provides a powerful exposition of Marxist debates about the relation of ideology and aesthetics.

Hewitt focuses on the period between the mid-nineteenth century and the early twentieth and considers dancers and social theorists in Germany, Britain, France, and the United States. Analyzing the arguments of writers including Friedrich Schiller, Theodor Adorno, Hans Brandenburg, Ernst Bloch, and Siegfried Kracauer, he reveals in their thinking about the movement of bodies a shift from an understanding of play as the condition of human freedom to one prioritizing labor as either the realization or alienation of embodied human potential. Whether considering understandings of the Charleston, Isadora Duncan, Nijinsky, or the famous British chorus line the Tiller Girls, Hewitt foregrounds gender as he uses dance and everyday movement to rethink the relationship of aesthetics and social order.

AIDS has had myriad effects on gay culture, and its influence on gay writing and theater have perhaps been the most notable. While novels and poetry by gay men and lesbians have recorded the epidemic, performance art has most closely reflected and embraced AIDS activism. David Roman's Acts of Intervention chronicles the emergence of AIDS as a subject in performance and theater, from the post-modern, high-camp, drag extravaganzas of Lypsinka to the overtly political parody of the Afro Pomo Homos to Tim Miller's playful, nude monologue performances: art as politics. But Roman is as interested in politics as art, and much of Acts of Intervention impressively discusses how public activity protests against government AIDS policy are "performances" themselves. Roman's knowledge of AIDS, art, and gay culture is exhaustive, and his writing is clear, succinct, and informed. Gay culture and art has always been about becoming visible and powerful, and Acts of Intervention charts how this has occurred over the past 17 years.

        4 out of 5 stars Responsible Criticism.......1999-12-12

This book is a valuable source for the variety of performances that have accompanied the appearance of AIDS in the United States. Roman carefully evaluates how theatre and performative events, from the activism of ACT-UP to Magic Johnson's announcement of his HIV status, have shaped the way that AIDS has been portrayed. In his introduction, Roman outlines his positionality within his subject, remaining critically responsible while acknowledging the impossibility of "objectivity." An important aspect of his critical approach is his "generosity" towards the performances he analyzes. He states that his purpose in the book is not to evaluate the performances for their artistic merit, but to show their position within the overall field of AIDS performance. He shows how performances that may have been "bad" nonetheless had an impact on their audience. Roman never succumbs to romanticism or nostalgia, but approaches his subject with reverence and respect. Roman's book leaves room for others to continue within the subject of AIDS performance and will continue to be a valuable source for those working in the field.

5 out of 5 stars Catch This Act!.......1999-12-04

This is a moving and important study of AIDS and theater. I felt connected to a whole history of cultural and creative work, much of which I never knew existed before i read this book. The book includes some really great images of early AIDS activism. Even though it deals with the history of AIDS, the book is by no means a downer. This will book inspire you. As a gay man, i'm really glad i took the time to read it.

        3 out of 5 stars Too rah-rah for me.......1999-09-26

I guess this is a good overview of this work (queer performance) but having seen some of these people perform ... well, some of the work is really awful. But you'd never know that from reading Roman.

Why do academics always feel like they have to be cheerleaders for anything in "the community"?? (especially if it gets attacked by Jesse Helms).

Something more balanced and yes, critical, might be in order. In a couple of years, most of this stuff is going to look as dopey as a lot of "feminist" performance of the 70s.

This is a timely contribution to the debates regarding future possibilities for feminism, theater, and performance. An excellent, cross-generational mix of theater scholars (Sue-Ellen Case, Dee Heddon, Meenakshi Ponnuswami, Janelle Reinelt, Joanne Tompkins) and practitioners (Anna Furse, Leslie Hill and Helen Paris, SuAndi) engage in lively, cutting-edge critical debates on topics that include citizenship, autobiography, cultural heritage and politcal agency as circulating in contemporary feminism and performance.

In addition to covering such basic workplace performance improvement issues as job aids and on-the-job training, this volume devotes several chapters to presenting a broader picture of Human Performance Technology (HPT). Preparation of HPT practitioners, the competencies required, the changing roles and professional challenges, and performance support engineering are all addressed here. As Performance Technologists sit on the precipice of an Electronic Performance Support Systems era, several chapters emphasize how much information exists in this burgeoning technology and the interplay between the user and the computer.
