5 out of 5 stars Lots of useful Information for experienced requirements engineers.......2007-02-22

I'm a software developer and have a lot of experience writing Vision- and "Use Cases"-documents.
Writing these documents is not a big deal, however to make the customers read
"Use Case"-documents and provide feedback is much more difficult. But without feedback
it is not possible for a developer to write correct requirement documents.

I ordered this book because I liked the word "collaboration" in its title. It implies
the importance of working together with the customer in order to get the requirements right.
As I expected the author concentrates much more on the process to elicit proper requirements
rather than on the notations of requirements models such as UML. The best way to collaborate
with customers is to have structered meetings the so called workshops.

The book is divided into following three parts: "1. Overview of Requirements Workshops",
"2. Requirements Workshop Framework", "3. Requirements Workshop Design Strategies". Especially
the 2nd part contains a lot of detailed information and sometimes it is difficult not to get
lost. But part one and three are quit easy to follow.

Only in part one is a chapter which describes the different requirements models.
They are categorized according to their view, focus and level of detail. After reading this chapter you
know when to use which model. "Use Case"-Models are the most popular requirements models.
However, there are software projects in which other requirements model are more appropriate.
This chapter gives you an overview of the 19 different models.
Although a brief summary of every model is provided there is no example. If you want to know
the details of these different models you have to look for other sources of information.

The rest of the book concentrates on the prepartion and facilitation of workshops. A lot of useful
advice is given on how to manage people, content and processes in a workshop. Most of the
content of the book is aimed at facilitors of workshops. If you have nobody in your company who
has the necessary skillset to facilitate workshops, the author recommends to hire someone from
a consulting company, who can do this for your workshops.

On the author's website there several useful templates and guidelines which help you make your
workshops more successfull.

This book is a recommended reading for everyone who is responsible for the success of a software project.

5 out of 5 stars How to do requirements workshops that work?.......2006-12-10

In Requirements by Collaboration, Ellen Gottesdiener shares many years of experience in running requirement workshops. In this area, Ellen might be one of the most experienced facilitators in the world.

The author provides a framework for organizing requirements workshops. The framework is based on getting six Ps right. The Ps are "Purpose, Participants, Principles, Products, Place and Process". For each step it describes typical things that need to be done. First establish a share purpose. Find the right participants for the workshop. Set the principles and ground rules. Decide what work products to create (the book provides an excellent overview of work products used in requirement analysis). Define the requirements for the location and decide where to hold the workshop and decide the process to hold it.

In each steps, the author provides great tips and insights from her experience in facilitating workshops. In the later part, some strategies of requirement analysis are presented and the book ends with some case studies.

Overall, the book is well written an easy to read. The requirement workshop framework, at times seems overly complex and certainly would need to be tailored to the specific situation. However, I think this could not have been prevented when talking about a generic way of holding requirement workshops.

In Agile Development, requirement workshops are one way of doing requirement analysis and spreading the requirement analysis over the whole project. For these kind of workshops, this book is probably the only reference, eventhough the book itself does not cover this very well. Therefore "requirements by collaboration" is a must read for anyone who wants to do requirements workshops.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for practioners.......2006-02-07

I found this book to be an invaluable help over the last few years that I have been running workshops with business people and users. It is concise and full of tips and how to's that are of great practical value. I can not recommend this book enough. I am a technical architect who has been thrown into the requirements and the domain traditionally inhabited by Buinsess Analyst and their ilk. I have used this book as a guide to run requirements workshops, business process workshop and scoping workshops. top book.

5 out of 5 stars More Effective Group Collaboration.......2004-09-28

This book is about running requirements workshops and more. Requirements workshops are an important tool for understanding what you need to build. The techniques in this book will be useful in many other group discussion settings, and will help you have more productive meetings. The book discusses, among other things, roles in workshops and decision rules (deciding how to decide). Each chapter ends with a list of excellent references that you can use to probe further on techniques. Anyone who is involved in group decision making should own a copy of this book, read it, and refer back to it often.

5 out of 5 stars It's proving its worth.......2003-12-24

A good book is one that gives me a few ideas that help me do my job better. A great book is one that I find myself turning to over and over.

I can tell that this is a great book because my copy is getting worn out. I've learned more from it than anything else I've read in the last several years about software requirements and I continue to refer to it. Sometimes I find a particular technique to help with the task at hand, and sometimes I reread a section in light of my recent experience on a project and learn something more subtle.

Even if you aren't using the facilitated workshop approach to requirements, this book is still very useful. I refer over and over to its collection of different requirements models and how they relate to one another. There are other books that give a much more thorough treatment of a particular tool (Cockburn's Applying Use Cases for example) but none I've seen that tie it all together so well and help you pick the right analysis tools for the job.

If you like this book, be sure to visit Ellen's web site, www.ebgconsulting.com. The Resources section has many checklists and templates that go beyond the material in the book and can save you a lot of time when preparing a requirements workshop.

I'm surprised that only eight people (as of December 2003) have read and reviewed this. It's way better than that.

I am a beginner to Primavera. I purchased this book, hoping to learn, but this book was of no use. The Exercises/workshops do not give STEP BY STEP instruction to complete. I also downloaded the COMPLETED WORKSHOPS from EC HARRIS web site, but the excercise in the book doesn't mention the corresponding file name.
Finally, I do not recommend this book for BEGINNERS

From leading business thinkers to frontline employees, most everyone agrees: Not only is more and more organizational work becoming project-oriented, but the pressure is on to accomplish projects in less time, with better results, and with fewer resources.

This new reality is making project management one of the most important and frequently requested topics for corporate trainers--and yet one of the most difficult disciplines to teach. In fact, most companies lack the expertise to handle the topic, resulting in expensive out-of-house training.

Enter THE PROJECT MANAGEMENT WORKSHOP. Fourth in a much-needed series of "train the trainer" workbooks, it supplies the information and tools needed to design and deliver effective, on-target corporate training sessions on project management.

Packed with lecture notes, examples, problems, worksheets, overheads, and more, this hands-on trainer's manual is perfect for both professional trainers who need a crash course on project management and experienced project managers who need explicit training instruction.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best books on an effective & proven technique.......2001-08-15

Joint Application Development is, in my opinion, one of the most powerful tools available to analysts and consultants for capturing business requirements directly from the source - the business process owners and subject matter experts. This book is among the best I've come across on the subject and is worth the time and effort to track down.

What I most like is the way this book stays consistently focused on discovering (and uncovering) *business* requirements to be used as the foundation of information systems and applications. The book itself is divided into ten parts, each of which builds on the other to form a coherent approach to conducting JAD workshops and using the product of the workshop sessions as input into the requirements process.

Parts I through III introduce JAD, its underlying concepts and how they relate to business processes. Part IV provides guidelines for developing a business solution, while Parts V and VI guides you through the actual techniques and procedures that will be used in the JAD sessions.

After this point the book quickly picks up the pace and goes directly to the heart of JAD by showing how to capture the business vision and manage changes from the sessions as they [inevitably] occur. It's interesting to note some of the parallels between the approach in Part VI and the Microsoft Solution Framework (MSF). If you are using the MSF this book will add value to your processes because in many respects the approaches are either the same or complimentary.

Parts VIII and XI wrap up the JAD process by thoroughly discussing requirements and specifications, which are the two main products that JAD workshops are designed to capture. The rest of the book is devoted to skills profiles for workshop leaders, an implementation checklist that is invaluable, and excellent advice. I particularly liked the workshop templates, which will greatly aid you in setting up and conducting JAD workshops, and the way that the author guides you through the pitfalls that you will encounter when facilitating these workshops. Follow Mr. Crawford's advice and the time spent in the sessions will be used efficiently and effectively. Follow the approach in this excellent book and you stand a good chance of capturing the right requirements, and ensuring that they are validated by consensus of all stakeholders.

I am a fan of Paul Harris as he is the only person writing instructional text for Microsoft Project that comes to it with a construction industry perspective. It appears Microsoft Project has become the preferred solution for IT project managment, and has become enveloped in IT oriented literature. That said this book is exactly the same as the wire bound edition I purchased 3 years ago, with the exact same typos. There is no "Revised Text" nor are there any "updated workshops" from the original Microsoft Project 2003 edition, except that it now reduced from letter size 8.5 x 11 to 7 x 10 and paperback bound.

5 out of 5 stars I highly recommend this book.......2002-06-01

This book contains detailed plans for making twenty different wooden items for your kitchen. Most of these projects are for the woodworker that I would call "lightly experienced," while a couple (such as building a gateleg table) might require a little extra experience. The power tools required for these projects include the circular saw, drill, jig saw, power sander, belt sander and router. This means that these projects are good for anyone experienced enough to have build up even a modest collection of tools.

The projects themselves include a list of power tools required, construction materials, a cutting list, exploded diagrams (I love these!), and step-by-step instructions, complete with many color photos to help you on track. Each of the finished products is highly attractive, and a worthy addition to any kitchen.

One important thing: this book is a spiral book, which means that it lays flat on a workbench, and holds its page without having to weight it down. I really enjoy this feature! I highly recommend this book.

In case you are interested, the twenty projects are: wine & stemware cart, plate drying rack, spice holder, vegetable bin (which came out beautifully!), pantry cabinet, mug rack, bread box, pot racks, recycling center (which the kids helped me to decorate), stepstool, cookbook/recipe holder, cookbook easel, utility cart, cooling rack, paper towel holder, silverware caddy, kitchen island, trivet, serving tray, and gateleg table.
