As proposed by Kiyoshi Suzaki, a "mini-company" is a new kind of internal structure within a larger business, managed like an individual but interconnected corporation and designed for both personal and organizational advancement. Suzaki, a worldwide manufacturing consultant and author of several previous books, fully defines the concept in Results from the Heart and shows how it can have positive impacts on employees and ultimately contribute to their success and their company's. The purpose, as he sees it, is to "go beyond just doing our work routinely. We need a fresh and lively new paradigm to continuously find purpose in what we do." This is achieved with his model, Suzaki argues, because it allows workers on all levels to make meaningful contributions in the areas over which they have responsibility. He explains how those in any department can create and operate one of these entities, from developing its mission and orchestrating its implementation to summarizing its progress and acknowledging its contributions. The idea may not appeal to everyone, but Suzaki contends it has already proven effective and he provides enough detail here for anyone interested in giving it a try. --Howard Rothman

Book Description

Results from the Heart introduces a new and helpful approach to improving job performance, improving job satisfaction, and helping organizations better respond to the rapid changes that are an inherent part of today's business environment. Mr. Suzaki recognizes that a motivated and engaged workforce should be part of any strategy to obtain and maintain competitive advantage.

--Carl Stern, CEO,
The Boston Consulting Group

Since the publication of Frederick Taylor's The Principles of Scientific Management, managers have relied on logic to compel action. Now Kiyoshi Suzaki, one of the world's leading experts on enlarging the talents, self-esteem, and growth of the individual employee, argues that logic alone cannot move people to act. Productivity problems are inextricably linked to self-esteem, he argues, and worst of all to a prodigious waste of individual talent. But each solution is personal, Suzaki concludes, and found only within ourselves.

"To find meaning and purpose at work we must use our brain," Suzaki says, "but listen to our heart." In Zenlike fashion he proposes that each of us ask ourselves a series of questions to determine the degree to which our brain is engaged with our heart. The framework around which this selfquestioning takes place is a groundbreaking concept that Suzaki calls "the mini-company." The author demonstrates how, within the larger workplace, each job is endowed with an almost spiritual meaning when each person -- at every level -- becomes president of his or her own area of responsibility. With simple diagrams, Suzaki shows how your boss becomes your banker or venture capitalist and your peers become your immediate suppliers or customers. The results are nothing short of astonishing. In Results from the Heart, Suzaki describes thousands of mini-companies he has "founded" during his worldwide consulting assignments. In most cases in which unhappy employees had previously "followed instructions like robots," there have been spectacular increases in both morale and productivity. If it is true that work is a journey, this manifesto for a more humane definition of the way we work is the roadmap.

4 out of 5 stars Total Productive Maintenance Small Groups Taken to the Next Level.......2007-05-21

I was exposed to Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) throughout the late nineties, therefore the concept of small groups (inherent to the way TPM works) was familiar to me. In "Results from the Heart", Kiyoshi Suzaki, an author of many titles on the famous Japanese manufacturing framework, introduces the concept of Mini-Companies as an extension of the concept of Small Groups.

The tools and components he presents for the internal functioning of Mini-Companies and their interaction with other Mini-Companies across the organization give new life to the concept. This is the true value of the book.

As for the connection of the TPM concepts to finding meaning and purpose at work, the book seems a bit of a stretch, barely touching on the topic. If you really want to read about this, I recommend you try Z.B.A.: Zen of Business Administration - How Zen Practice Can Transform Your Work And Your Life.

4 out of 5 stars Dalai Lama's foreword .......2004-10-24

Taken from the Dalai Lama's foreword:

"I believe we have both the ability and the means to solve our problems and improve our world. Perhaps, the most important factors that inhibit us are short-sightedness, narrow-mindedness, and selfishness. Yet, to look after yourself is not wrong. Without a strong sense of self, we cannot develop self-confidence, determination, and will power.

But we must be careful, for there is also a narrow minded selfishness that can lead to self-destruction. To counter that we have to realize that in reality our own interest is closely linked to the interests of others and the benefit, happiness, and interests of others are our own."

The idea of mini-company is as simple as that! But there may be a deep gap between spirituality and business... I wonder.

5 out of 5 stars THE MUST HAVE BOOK FOR MEDITATOR !.......2007-09-11

This book contains the essential teaching of The Buddha specially about mindfulness, the explanation is not complicated, easy to undestand and strike to the point.I read a lot about meditation and most of them had this book as a reference I wonder why, but after I've done with this one I know why and I'm sure that the author (Ven. Nyanaponika Thera) is a High Level Thera so that if someone buy this book, someone will NEVER REGRET !

5 out of 5 stars Important for personal conduct.......2006-09-12

It is rare to find a book which presents the essence of the Buddha's teaching in a clear and concise outline. Although the book was published for the first time in 1962 the first paragraph of the first chapter shows the reader that one is confronted with an eternal truth.
Unless we recognize that the causes of war, and especially the one we are currently engaged in, reside in the human mind and are based on greed, hatred and delusion to which one might add fear, we will simply continue in the same rut and will pile ever growing disasters upon ourselves.
The author explains not only what is meant by right mindfulness but also demonstrates its uses for every day life. This is not a religious treatise but a practical guide to overcome the mentioned four factors which create havoc with our lives and prevent mental growth.
This is not a book to be read once and put back on the shelf. It should become a constant companion and each sentence deserves to be pondered because with growing life experiences new meanings will emerge.
The book can be strongly recommended to anyone, regardless of religious or political affiliation, who is interested in understanding the vagaries of one's own mind and what to do about them.

3 out of 5 stars Good topic, difficult style.......2006-07-19

I started off very enthusiastic with this book. However, my enthusisam fell page by page. I literally had to force myself through some sections. The subject matter is not the problem. The issue I had was with the writing style, which I found to be too unclear and difficult to comprehend. Many times I'd read a sentence and say "what?" Basically, I felt like I had to wade through words to get the point. I give the book 3 stars because the subject is important and there was much valuable information in the book, including a collection of scriptures on mindfulness. However, I would advise someone wanting to learn about Buddhist meditation and mindfulness to read Mindfulness in Plain English by Bhante G. If you want, buy both books and see what you think for yourself. I personally found Mindfulness in Plain English much more clear and helpful.

5 out of 5 stars Part III was my favorite .......2005-12-14

What an amazing book. Probably not for the beginner, and I say this only because of the translation. If I recall correctly, the English translation came after a few other translations over the years and earlier successful editions. I became enchanted with the text and the way it was presented.

Because of this book I started reading various buddhist scriptures. In part III, there are some of the most incredible writings from various sources and traditions. For instance I couldn't wait to read Santideva's work. Check out "Bodhicaryavatara: Buddhist classics series by Santideva". I'm still waiting for his other work to come in so I can get started on it.

I'll be looking to this book for many years to come.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent theoretical essay on the practice of Insight Meditation.......2005-12-09

Buddhist Insight (Vipassana) Meditation has many practical applications. It is used by many psychiatric outpatient programs to train sufferers of anxiety and other mental illnesses, so as to better cope with their lives. It is used by many who do not consider themselves Buddhists, as a means for self-learning and self-transformation. And, of course, it is practiced by Buddhists worldwide as a means for attaining and embodying the enlightenment exemplified by the Buddha, the Awakened One.

This nifty little book is meant as a reference guide for anyone practicing Insight Meditation, and it fulfills this purpose well. It is divided into three sections: first is Nyanaponika Thera's own essay on Insight Meditation, second is a translation of the Maha Satipatthana Sutta from the Pali canon, and third is a collection of traditional commentaries, from both the Pali canon and the Mahayana tradition. All of this is intended not to advocate Buddhism as a religion, but rather to explain the activity of Insight Meditation, and to explain Right Mindfulness, the virtue developed by Insight Meditation and the type of action performed by one who has acquired it.

Of particular interest is the first section of the book, Nyanaponika Thera's own essay on Right Mindfulness. This has all the detail of an Aristotelian treatise, discussing the function, the nature, and the efficient cause of Right Mindfulness, breaking the whole thing down into a detailed analysis that empowers one to read the Sutta and the commentaries for oneself, as part of one's own meditation practice, without relying on others for interpretation. This book will be of primary interest to anyone who is practicing Insight Meditation, whether or not he/she is Buddhist. It will also be of interest to anyone curious about the nature of Buddhist enlightenment, and the means to that end.

The author devotes a section of his essay specifically to the Burmese tradition of Insight Meditation. This is the very tradition which has found wide acceptance in the US and elsewhere, under the tutelage of Jack Kornfield and others, and constitutes another reason why this book is relevant. Further, there is a section devoted entirely to Anapanasati, or Mindfulness of Breathing, which is a simple and straightforward version of Insight Meditation, and which is widely practiced for that reason.

My one criticism is that the author's writing style is dated, and can be difficult to follow in some places. He has the particularly bad habit of beginning a new section of his essay by referring to previous sections, so that the book is more difficult to read than it should be. But if you are patient enough to overcome this slight problem, you will be rewarded many times over with tremendous insight drawn from the author's years of personal practice and study.

Book Description

Pax Beale started lifting weights at the age of 53 to strengthen a bad back. He loved it so much that within a year he was competing in bodybuilding contests. Then, at the age of 61, with a national bodybuilding championship and a Mr. U.S.A. title under his belt, he was diagnosed with crippling heart disease.

After less-than-desirable results from a five-way coronary bypass, Pax's prognosis was still dire. Although his symptoms stabilized, he was essentially a heart cripple with only 25% of his maximum heart efficency, allegedly irreversible dead heart tissue, and the danger of an enlarged heart. He needed a miracle and ultimately got one. Now, with a body of his dreams in his 70s, Pax has quite a story to tell. Not only did he manage to recover from surgery and completely reverse his heart disease, he went on to win yet another national bodybuilding championship.

This book tells his inspiring true story and outlines the specific step-by-step program and philosophy that made his miraculous journey from heart surgery to national bodybuilding champion possible. He explains the four steps - nutrition, training, supplements, and the principle of total commitment - in great detail and presents important research into the cardiac benefits of weight-resistance training. He also introduces the nutritional supplement Creatine/Pyruvate, which his research supports was the pivotal component of his remarkable recovery.

One quickly realizes that Pax's comeback isn't a miracle after all. It was a result of hard work, research, and resourcefulness. Now he offers the knowledge he gained and the proven results of his experience in order to help others prevent or reverse America's number one killer - heart disease.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring and informative.......2004-07-13

This book altered my perceptions on heart disease and the way I approach my life in general. The author, Pax Beale reversed his heart disease; I previously thought this was impossible. You internalize Mr. Beale's teachings because he speaks from the heart figuratively and literally using eccentric quips and his own earned life truths. I would recommend this book for anyone struggling with health, heart disease, and for anyone wanting to excel in life. He lights a fire under your ass, plain and simple.

I no longer choose to be a spectator.

This is a great read and I strongly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars A review from an "old friend".......2004-07-06

It's been my pleasure to have known Pax Beale for 35 years. I knew him "pre-body for the ages", when he simply had what we used to refer to as a "good build". He & I were running buddies, and his coaching & companionship helped me to achieve many of my running goals. He has certainly had an incredible life of "experience". I can attest to the many zany challenges that he took on, which were held as crazy endeavors by his friends (& with which he now agrees). His book is a great deal to digest, but it certainly can motivate anyone who reads it to do SOMETHING to improve their life, both mentally & physically. So Pax, my friend, when will you be conducting your 1st Body for The Ages Seminar?

5 out of 5 stars Body for the Ages; From Heart Surgery to Bodybuilding Champi.......2004-03-25

This is a very readable and enjoyable book. Not only does it tell the tale of an amazing life but really gives great advice of what to do and how to do it. I appreciated the pictures of how perform certain excercise routines but some of the pictures could have been better.... I enjoyed it and derived a great of information on how to change my workout routines. And it clearly show that that there can be a great life after a heart attack. I would be curious to see if there is a follow up book.

      Book Description

Heart rate monitors (HRMs) are making it easier than ever before for both students and teachers to be fully accountable. They allow students to become responsible for their individual efforts and enable teachers to objectively determine each student's progress toward personal fitness goals. Lessons From the Heart shows you how to use this technology to enrich and individualize your physical education program.

Veteran physical educator Beth Kirkpatrick, former NASPE Teacher of the Year, and Burt Birnbaum, who has been developing programs for the use of HRMs in education since 1977, present 38 practical lesson plans designed to stimulate student learning and motivation through the use of HRMs. All of the lessons have interdisciplinary applications, and many of them include reproducible worksheets. To make it easy for you to incorporate the lessons into your class, each lesson includes

      • goals,

      • key concepts,

      • materials needed,

      • a description of the activity, and

      • helpful teaching tips.

Lessons From the Heart also provides essential background information about the structure and function of the heart, methods for measuring heart rate, and the use of heart rate monitors in the classroom. The book's valuable appendices give you quick instructions for using heart rate monitors, information on meeting NASPE's physical education content standards, tips for securing funding for heart rate monitors, and guidelines for curriculum development.

Whether you're currently using HRMs in your program or just exploring their potential, Lessons From the Heart will show you how to take full advantage of this technology.

      Book Description

Training from the Heart argues that the most effective and influential learning professionals have at least two things in common-they know why they are trainers and they understand that training is a partnership. This book shows its readers how to find their own training heart, and use this discovery to create a better climate for learning in which learners actually apply the lessons from the classroom to the job.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Spacious Meadow for Trainers.......2002-08-12

This is a "Must Read" book for all trainers - both beginners and experts. You get drawn into the book through the insights about learning partnerships and by discovering your readiness for training from the heart. Then in each Chapter, the authors share personal experiences that help you learn along with them.

After reading the book, you will discover that it is like a "spacious meadow" that you can turn to for inspiration when you need it. I keep returning to the Chapter on "Creating a Service Motto". Maybe you will want to return to the Chapter "Become Intimate with the Client".

5 out of 5 stars Real World Application..........2002-05-10

I found the book to be very helpful in managing my attitude toward training in a non-supportive environment. I have taken the time to create a motto that has taken me places and opened the doors for new discovery. I was pleased to find that meeting Cyndi and Barry in person at a CCASTD meeting was just as enlightening as the reading. Thanks to you both for opening my eyes a little wider and taking the chance to grow.

5 out of 5 stars Heartfelt AND Utilitarian.......2002-02-12

You would expect by the title that this would be described as both warm and thoughtful, but the bonus for this 160 page book is that it is also highly pragmatic and useful. Barry and Cyndi's approach is rooted in research and experience but much of the wealth comes from their myriad of anecdotes that supplement each and every topic. As trainers, we know that participants learn from our stories and tales, this is evidentally true for the written word as well. The authors share their years of experience with us but without the usual "ivory tower" approach that many authors take. A few weeks ago I read Barry and Cyndi's words about generative learning and used the concept in a recent train-the-trainer. The true worth of a book comes from its application in the real world: this book's worth far exceeds whatever its cost.

5 out of 5 stars A Master Class from Gifted Facilitator/Trainers.......2001-06-27

Having worked with(and admired) both Cyndi and Barry, I was delighted to see how well this wonderful book brought me back to the learnings I had gleaned from watching and listening to these master trainers. The real value of this book is that the tools for self-development and skill improvement are here along with a generous dose of the passion that comes from making a commitment to learners and following through. Master level training not just about knowing your subject, it is understanding how to help your audience grasp their own learning from the experiences, content sharing and practice opportunities they begin in your classroom. Read and enjoy, then use it.

      5 out of 5 stars A keeper.......2001-04-09

This is one of the few books that I have read on the subject in the last several years that I not only kept in my library, but continue to read and recommend to others. The information covered is broad enough to be relevant to just about anyone in the training field, whether you train internal staff or are a trainer/speaker in the outside world. Getting 2 authors' experiences and perspectives is an added bonus. This book is an easy read that you will probably find yourself going back to again and again, which is rare to find in our information overload society!

        Book Description

Teaching Diversity is different from other instruction. Rather than reporting objective themes or imparting detached information on new management techniques, diversity teaching involves questioning our institutions and policies, our definitions of truth and equity, our self-images, and our professional roles. It requires a deep personal journey of self-discovery and growth. Teaching Diversity explores that journey.

This book offers instructors a map to the diversity terrain, helping them choose a personal teaching path, recognize crossroads, anticipate roadblocks, and sustain personal commitment along the way.

This creative and collaborative effort will benefit you professionally and touch you personally. The contributors--women and men from a wide range of ages, cultures, and backgrounds--take a unique look at the paradoxes inherent in the diversity teaching process. Through heartfelt accounts of their own experiences, they provide grounded insights and sound advice about how to prepare for the kind of teaching that changes lives.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Captures the complexities of teaching diversity.......2000-04-21

This book provides faculty with powerful narratives through which they can construct their own narrative of teaching. Creatively edited, Teaching Diversity provides the reader with real life experiences of 21 management faculty who honestly discuss the challenges they experience in teaching about controversial and complex issues of identity and diversity. They also candidly speak about their own experiences, some as faculty of color, navegating student resistance and expectations. Novice teachers will gain insight from the stories of experienced faculty. Sometimes poignant, sometimes hilarious, this easy to read book will not bore.

            Description:
Test anxiety may degrade the quality of human performance when tasks are complex and demanding. This study was concerned with the influence of test anxiety on driving performance during the British practical driving test. Thirteen candidates participated in three sessions: (a) a normal driving lesson, (b) a mock driving test, and (c) UK Department of Transport official driving test. Anxiety was measured via psychophysiology (heart rate) and subjective self-report (State-Trait Anxiety Inventory). The results indicated that state anxiety increased in accordance with the formality of evaluative scenario. Those who failed the formal driving test exhibited significantly greater increases in heart rate and state anxiety during this test than the successful candidates. These differences were not apparent during baseline conditions or the mock-driving test. The implications of the study are discussed with reference to test anxiety and consequences for driver training and testing.
