Do-It-Yourself Heaven!!!.......2007-09-21
What a wonderful, ingenious book. I am shocked this book isn't more widely known, particularly in homeschooling circles (at least, the ones I moved in), where the wealth of creative ideas for making construction toys out of common, inexpensive, everyday materials would seem right up most homeschoolers' alleys. These materials can be used to make simple, elegant, and incredibly appealing projects.
There is also an excellent discussion of structures, both in nature and man-made, of buildings, of bridges and towers and so on.
It is all absolutely fascinating and I'm going to plan a class for the spring using this book as the spine.
Well worth the money. An amazing resource.
great book!.......2007-07-16
my son really enjoys this book, he always has something new to show me. this book is great for kids 9 and up.
Fantastic!.......2007-03-11
I teach art and will use many of the ideas in this book! It's fantastic with so many new and creative activities. They are all open-ended and not 'cutesy' art.
Steven Caney's Ultimate Building Book: Including More Than 100 Incredible Projects Kids Can Make!.......2007-01-05
There are projects in this book for young people age 5 through college age, and even for the young-at-heart. Many of the projects use materials commonly found in the home. A child who begins with simple projects and advances to complex projects would be learning geometry and physics and the basic building blocks of architecture and the construction industry. I could see this book used by children who enjoy building projects or as a resource for family nights or home schooling or as a grandparenting resource. Congratulations, Steven Caney!
A 5-Star children's book of creativity.......2006-11-15
Do you have a child who is fascinated by creating? Do you have a child that you wish would be more creative? Have I got a book for you!
Steven Caney's Ultimate Building Book is not only a book about how to build "stuff," nor is it a book of "stuff" to build, it is a comprehensive book that answers nearly every question a child (and many adults) would think to ask about structures, how they are built, and how they can do it themselves. Do you want to know what type of tent you see at the side of the lake? Did you know there were actually many types of tents? Who wants to build a greenhouse? Build people out of pasta? How about recipes for various types of modeling clay?
With loads of information about structures from nests to castles and back to musical instruments, this book is a one-stop shop for the creative thinker. My six-year-old hauls around this nearly 600-page tome like it weighs nothing and will lie on his tummy, turning page after page and asking questions for an indefinite period--right up until he finds the next thing he'd like to try to create, and then he's off.
An interesting tidbit that surprised me, but doesn't seem to bother the kids, is that all the photos are black and white and the children in them are from several decades. Though, quite frankly, had the photos been only of the current generation, they would be out of date long before you'll get rid of the book. This one's a keeper.
Armchair Interviews says: The ultimate resource for the creative child. 5 STARS!

Customer Reviews:
Not a very good collection of plans.......2007-07-01
We are going to hire an architect and contractor to build a home and bought 3 megabooks of plans from Amazon to get some ideas. This was the worst of the lot though by no means as awful as "the house you build" book. My wife and I just didn't like many of the plans. The organization isn't really too useful as the plans are grouped by style, not size (nobody who is building a 3000sf home wants to parse through 1500sf cottages). The color photos are nice and I gave the book 2 stars because there are helpful hints for construction and design interspersed throughout. Check my other reviews for the home books we recommend.
Great book for me to build my dream........2006-11-06
The problem I have not got enough bucks.
A Wish Book for adults.......2006-03-10
We couldn't agree on the type of house we wanted so we spent hours inspecting the hundreds of house plans in this book, mentally taking ideas from one and adding them to others. Having color pictures of the finished product makes it easy to identify those you like. In the end we were able to compromise; I gave up the two-story idea for the more practicle one-story, and we've created a wing for privacy. Rather than buy individual plans we'll take our cut & paste ideas to an architech (someday). If nothing else, browsing through the book initiated a lot of conversation about our lifestyle what's important to us as individuals. Great fun.
Title is accurate........2005-10-29
When I bought this book I just thought it was one of those magazine style things printed on cheap paper.Wrong! This book is huge! Colour photos and colour illustrations throughout.Floor plans of all types, almost. Not many homeplans here to suit the lower budgets.
Overall, this book is the best.Great quality, good value and its huge. There are a lot of homes here so you will find something you like. Its worth the money.
Close to "Ultimate".......2005-04-12
Yes, I gave this book 5 stars, but there are somethings I wish that were added. Those include plans for homes 4500sqft+. Most are 2500-3500. The book could use more of the in-depth design areas (Like Master Bedroom, Kitchen, etc...) There are "tips" spread throughout the plans, and I really enjoy the color photos with room specs on the floor plans. It can keep my 5 stars, but please add the above items to keep getting those stars in future additions.

Worthless For What I Needed.......2007-05-19
The book is great if you want 700 pages of sterile looking European kitchens. But if you want lots of ornate wood and raised panel cabinet doors, find a different book; this isn't it.
500 beautiful pictures of unique kitchens.......2007-02-04
I think the kitchens are all european. The pictures are mostly full page. There is almost no text. There is very little sourcing (names of some designers in tiny type on the side of the picture, you'll have to google to find contact information, and then they'll be somewhere in europe.). This isn't a guide to fixtures. This is a book you'd use to communicate what you want to architects.
I love this book, but again, there is no sourcing, and you can't use it as a guide to fixtures.
Great resource.......2006-11-14
Whether you are working with a designer, building a house or just looking for ideas, this is an important and valuable book. NOTE: it is 99% photos of different styles and designs of kitchens. It is broken up into modern, country, minimalist, etc, and each section has about 30 photos of different kitchens. It contains no descriptions of materials or how toos. The photos are fabulous and the ideas are varied. I guarantee that you will find a kitchen that fits your style in this books. Good luck!
Book Description

Remarkably crisp and invariably eye-catching, the color photos make up the bulk of the book. They illustrate more than 1,000 decorating projects...this book sparks the imagination.”—Booklist. “Good advice...with information and tips on every aspect of decorating.”—Country Accents.
Customer Reviews:
The best decorating book out there, bar none!.......2004-05-04
I love to decorate, but as you probably know most decorating books cover just one subject, one room, or one style of decorating. This book truly covers everything and anything. It covers the hows, the whys, the color theory, and presents many pictures of beautiful rooms. Whenever I'm stumped for what to do in a room, I pick up this book and leaf through it. I have not been let down even once. There's always an idea I can adapt to whatever I'm looking for at that particular moment. I would highly recommend this book. It's a bit big, and might seem overwhelming to some, but don't try to read it all in one day. Leaf through it gingerly, or fast forward to a particular room you are wanting to work in. You will be inspired to try somethings, but always adapt them to what you would enjoy in your own home. In the summer months, my husband and I will be re-doing our 100 year old kitchen, and this book has already given me plenty of ideas to work with. Pick this book up, before all others. You can always narrow your decorating focus as you go on, and buy books on that focus. This book gives you everything and more.
I love this book.......2003-04-19
I am young, and just recently married. We just bought our first home and I had no idea where to begin. I got this book as a gift and I have loved everything about it. It has trully helped me decorate my home into something that I am proud of. I love that it gives an overview of lots of things like curtains, floors, painting techniques, and color. If you are decorating your home for the first time, or you just need some ideas to make some updates I highly recommend this book.
In trying to be everything, this book gives you nothing........2002-12-14
Pluses:
None as far as I can see.
Minuses:
This book tries to cover so many topics, it can only give you a little bit of info on each. I could forgive the lack of substantive information, if the pictures made up for it, but they don't. They are very boring and most seem outdated. In trying to appeal to the broadest range of people, the book misses the ideosyncracies of different interior decoration styles.
Recommendation:
I would skip this book. There are so many more interior decoration books that are so much better. Better Homes and Gardens and House Beautiful books are usually pretty good. Also, the Architecture and Design Library books are good sources for differnt styles.
A bountiful array of decorating ideas!.......2000-04-02
This book contains many colorfull pages of great ideas that are easy for the decorating beginner to follow. This book gives you simple solutions to jazz up you current rooms and offers more detailed solutions for you to create with many different products. I loved this book from cover to cover.

Customer Reviews:
One of the few house design books you need.......2007-04-04
Book store (and Amazon) shelves in the architecture section are filled with coffee table books with large pictures of homes we can never afford to own, or homes that look more like a museum show case than a place where people actually live. This book is different.
It gets you in the right mind set for starting to think about designing your own home. Practical, with lots of images that contain useful suggestions. Start with this book, then buy others.
This edition is a comlete re-write from the version I bought in 2002.
great book.......2007-02-15
great resource information mostly for UK though (i think)
pictures and ideas are solid i just like to skim thru it for ideas
everything you can imagine related to the home is in there somehow
The Ultimate House Book by Conran et al........2004-08-21
This book is an excellent reference for decorating a private
home. It describes flexible living quarters, work at home and
family quarters. There is a basic budget model, as well as
provision for more elaborate and expensive customizations.
The work contains an extensive materials directory which is
useful for deciding upon the material components and pricing
structure. Both form and function are described in detail.
There are contrasting arguments for employing vulcanized
rubber, plastics and marble. The book is excellent if it is
utilized wisely in connection with planned home designs.

Customer Reviews:
Good resource.......2006-11-18
I am about to totally gut my master bathroom and increase the size by incorporating two adjacent closets. It will still be on the small side but I was pleasantly surprised to find that this book covers the very small to the grandiose in size and style. The author discusses practical considerations when choosing each component of the bathroom and highlights common mistakes and misconceptions. There are lots of ideas and a selection of floor plans and whilst you cannot expect any of them to be tailor made for your house, they are a valuable resource to build upon. I would recommend this book if you are thinking of redesigning your bathroom.
Book Description

Treehouses come in all shapes and sizes, from a simple deck in the sky to an elaborate complex of interconnecting structures far above the ground. They can be romantic, luxurious, or designed for entertaining friends. This engaging book contains some of the most interesting examples from around the world, and also features a wide range of interiors, designed for various functions. It's an invaluable source of lofty ideas for anyone contemplating a move up-into the trees.
Customer Reviews:
Buyer Beware!.......2004-02-28
I ordered the book from Amazon, the book pictured is NOT the one I recieved. That photo is no where in my copy. I do have a book titled Ultimate Treehouses by David Clark but it isn't the same one pictured.
Customer Reviews:
Quiet Wisdom.......2004-06-26
I have only read the first of two books in this volume, but I am impressed with the combination of quiet wisdom dispensed in a plain-writing style. The style may not resonate with a woman who wants to be flattered as hard-charging or not to be confused with a housewife; I think the book is a small gem. Benjamin Franklin, another pragmatist not without humor, would have understood its tone. (BTW, I am a 59 year-old bachelor.) At her best, Felton offers compassion to those who have been intimidated into fear of making any decision or any move, counsels against compensating by inflating simple jobs into big plans that are never executed, and gently shows how to break things down into managable size. She offers useful and humorous warnings against "another good idea that doesn't work." As an older book, the book shows no awareness of how Felton's tools could fit into a small electronic PDA, but a reader who prefers a PDA to paper can figure that out.
Bogus and disappointing..........2004-06-13
As an apparently "messie" college student, I received this book from my mother after years of hearing her complain about how messy I am. I was actually eager to spend some time flipping through it (I first saw it on the bargain rack at Barnes and Noble...I wonder why), but once I did, I was largely disappointed. This book is written expressly for the 1980's housewife, with its humor and voice only directly relevant for this group. In the first part of the collection, Felton tries to pigeonhole messy people (seeing the word "messie" feels like hearing nails on a chalkboard for me) into profiled categories (i.e. "The Clean Messie") and spends the rest of the book throwing out bogus and unfounded advice based on her misperceptions of the psychology of messy people. The second part of the collection is just as much of a mess itself, with more of Felton's bogus advice as a "former messie". "Messies Anonymous"? "The Mount Vernon Method?" Oh please. If you want to become more organized in this day and age (rather than 20 years ago), this isn't the book for you.
It Will Change Your Life!!.......2003-11-17
I never thought of myself as a "Messie", I just thought I was just behind on a few things! Sandra Felton in her wonderful writing style makes you want to sing out loud and expect more from yourself and your home. This book is not for you if you want to learn how to clean but it is for you if you want to organize your home and life. Her system on organizing your cleaning and day to day life are quick painless and ultimately change your messie ways forever!
Not very good.......2002-12-17
Why do people who write these kinds of books have to keep mentioning God every five minutes (Yes I do believe in God)but when I want to hear about God I will read my bible.
Borrow it from a friend but don't buy it
desperately seeking cleanliness.......2002-10-31
I am a Messie. But... I bought this book in preparation for the purchase of my first home, and actually managed to finish the first section before moving! I never got around to the second half, but what I did read really helped me let go of the need to do it all at once - granted moving to a bigger place helped a lot, but I wouldn't have been able to get rid of so much junk and organize the rest had I not had the tools I gained from reading this book. Best of all, I've been able to KEEP relatively organized :)
Book Description
The biggest, most complete home improvement book on the market-608 pages packed with over 2,500 photos, 800 illustrations, and an understandable, practical text that covers the home top to bottom, inside and out.
Customer Reviews:
Not so helpful.......2001-06-16
I was dissapointed with this book. It had great pictures and information about home repair but many of the subjects did not give any tips on how to do the repairs. For example tuck pointing bricks: The book showed examples of when it needed to be done but there was not one tip on how to do it.
Short on details.......2001-05-25
I regretably returned this book since it did not describe how home improvements should be done but instead it just describes what needs to be done. The book read more like an encylopedia than a "do-it-yourself" manual - lots of information but not very helpful. I much prefer Standley's home repair manual which describes, for instance, how to caulk or different techniques for sanding.
All aspects of the home are covered.......2001-02-17
Home Book: The Ultimate Guide To Repairs, Improvements & Maintenance can be consider the definitive, 608-page, "how to" reference and instructional guide for anyone seeking to remodel, renovate, repair, or maintain any aspect of their residence. It's "user friendly" format offers more than 300 step-by-step projects with clear text being enhanced for the reader with 3,300 photographs and illustrations. All aspects of the home are covered including common repairs; wiring and electricity; plumbing; floors and stairs; walls and ceilings; basements and attics; yards and gardens; decks and porches; exterior structures, masonry, framing and carpentry, minor and major improvements, and more. Home Book is an invaluable, enthusiastically recommended addition to any personal or community library do-it-yourself collection.
ultimate book on home improvement.......2001-02-10
This is the perfect book for the do-it-yourselfer. This book easily paid for itself on the first project that I used it for. Detailed instructions on every kind of project. This is a must have book for the home handyman.

Customer Reviews:
A book you'll use again and again.......2004-10-25
If you're into swedish country, you have to get this book! It's been my decorating bible! I love the beautiful photographs, but the text is even better. It explains the origins and purpose of the color palette, flooring, furniture, window treatments, room layouts, fabric and accessories used in ths style. It also discusses the influence of King Gustav, Carl Larsson and Josef Frank. The only part of this book I don't find useful is the recipe section. Other than that, I use this book constantly! It stays on my coffee table so I can browse through whenever I want.
Cheryl MacLachlan's Bringing It Home Series.......2000-04-08
Her books on each country are so wonderful-not just for viewing the photos for decorating ideas, but to get an all-around feel for that particular country's lifestyle and how to create it yourself. These are not just your average home decorating books, they make an excellent read as well. You won't be disappointed.
