    Book Description

Subtle Sexism--often accepted as normal, customary, "good natured," or disguised as "tradition"--has replaced much of the blatant sex discrimination of the past. And, although we often hear the phrase "subtle sex discrimination," there has been almost no research on the topic. Subtle Sexism breaks new ground in this area by documenting the range of "just below the surface" discriminatory behavior that many women, (and some men) experience on a daily basis. The chapters in this reader demonstrate how subtle sexism devalues women, dismisses many of their accomplishments, and limits their effectiveness in a variety of settings--including higher education, the workplace, family therapy, the criminal justice system, and popular culture. The contributors to this insightful work hail from both the United States and Canada and include faculty from a broad spectrum of academic disciplines, (social work, administrators, clinicians, and attorneys). The book is written to be a catalyst for stimulating class discussion and will encourage students and faculty to view gender inequity through wider lenses, and, because Subtle Sexism is targeted at students, each chapter is eminently readable and jargon-free. This reader can be used in a range of courses including, women's studies, social work, political science, public administration, business administration, communication, criminal justice and human resources.

5 out of 5 stars really useful book.......2003-02-11

This book is a very practical, well-written guide to workplace issues. It clearly sets out both law and practice. I think this book is useful to both lawyers and lay people alike. It is also very readable with a great many examples given. I recommend it highly.

5 out of 5 stars Highly informative and good reading.......2003-02-09

As a social worker I found that this book made an extremely valuable contribution to my understanding the issues around workplace harrassment. The book is written with clarity and sensitivity. Randi Blom, MSW

5 out of 5 stars Plain speaking about a delicate set of issues.......2003-02-08

I like the clear, judgement-free approach, and the no-nonsense, bedrock feeling of fairness and reality. I especially like the fact that the book is written in plain English, for audiences of all intelligence and experience levels.
Even though I'm not a professional in the field, it was helpful for me as a small business owner to get a better idea of what goes on in the workplace.
I'm sure it would be doubly helpful to HR folks, and anyone running or managing an enterprise, or a department.

I found this 'interactive' cd to be quite pedestrian. The scenarios or vignettes that were supposed to show sales interactions were pretty cheesy and not in the least bit helpful. The GUI was not well-designed and the whole experience was less than effective.

    Book Description

A petite single mother, Lois Jenson was among the first women hired by a northern Minnesota iron mine in 1975. In this brutal workplace, female miners were relentlessly threatened with pornographic graffiti, denigrating language, stalking, and physical assaults. Terrified of losing their jobs, the women kept their problems largely to themselves—until Lois, devastated by the abuse, found the courage to file a complaint against the company in 1984. Despite all of the obstacles the legal system threw at them, Lois and her fellow plaintiffs enlisted the aid of a dedicated team of lawyers and ultimately prevailed. Weaving personal stories with legal drama, Class Action shows how these terrifically brave women made history, although not without enormous personal cost. Told at a thriller’s pace, this is the story of how one woman pioneered and won the first sexual harassment class action suit in the United States, a legal milestone that immeasurably improved working conditions for American women.

    5 out of 5 stars Amazing book.......2007-08-04

I grew up on "da range" and I'm familiar with the mines. My hometown is Hoyt Lakes, not very far from Eveleth. My dad and one of my uncles worked at LTV Steel outside of Hoyt Lakes, I think even my brother worked there for a while. I don't remember hearing anything of the trial. Back in 1998 I was 9 years old. I became familiar with it, when they were filming the movie North Country while I was going to the community college in Virginia. I've watched the movie multiple times. Then this summer in one of my English classes we were required to read Class Action. By the time the class finished I hadn't finished the book yet, but that didn't stop me from reading it. This is a really great book, and I've had a hard time putting it down. Its so interesting to learn the facts of the case, and was even more surprised when I recognized some of the last names of the people. I haven't quite finished yet, I have about 60 pages to go. I keep finding myself getting irritated with the rulings of Judge McNulty. This is a very important book, and in my opinion everyone should read it.

    5 out of 5 stars Iron determination.......2006-08-28

Like some other reviewers I came across this book after seeing the movie North Country. The movie though is just good entertainment pulling at the heartstrings and very loosely based on the legal problems of single mother Lois Jenson.

The book, I'm pleased to say, is much more gripping and will keep you turning the pages until the end. I thought it raised various issues like:

*Why did the legal aspects of this case take from 1984 until a settlement in 1998? In 1997 a judgement from the Eighth Circuit court commented on the 'inordinate delay' and that it simply was not possible for the parties to get justice 'when a final outcome is issued more than ten years' after the case was filed and more than fifteen years since Lois started her class action.

*Why did the mineworkers union maintain such a male chauvinist view towards its female members? I always assumed that Minnesota folk, historically populated by hard working European immigrants in a hostile physical environment would have been much more sympathetic to the sexual harassment that went on year after year in the mines. In fact very few males come out of this story with much credibility, from the mine management down to the union, they are really shown to be sexist and ultra conservative when females start to (legally) work in their domain.

*Why did it take so long for the mines main insurance company, who were going to be the ultimate payers of any compensation, to get to grips with the case? When they did get closely involved in 1998 the problems seemed to evaporate and the ladies got their money

The authors write in a simple straightforward style fortunately avoiding flowery generalisations that seem a staple of non-fiction writing. The story unfolds in a logically time frame from March 1975 to the final financial settlement in November 1998. Early on there is an excellent historical overview of the Mesabi Range and the importance of the raw materials lying just under the surface. A nice touch I thought was the frequent explanations of points of law and how these affected the progress of the case.

A couple of points occurred to me as a read the book: I would have liked to see a listing at the start describing the principals, frequently a name popped up and I wondered who the person was having seen a mention maybe a hundred pages earlier. So much of the story describes the mine and other buildings, a simple diagram of the plant layout would have been helpful.

'Class Action' is a powerful narrative about a hostile working environment and the legal system and it reminds of a quote by Thomas Noon Talfourd:
    Fill the seats of justice
With good men not so absolute in goodness
As to forget what human frailty is.

BTW. I wanted to see photos of the four heroes of the book, the wonderful Lois Jenson and her legal team Paul Sprenger, Jane Lang and Jean Boler and I found them all through Google Images.

    5 out of 5 stars A must read.......2006-05-29

A story of great courage and resolve, of working conditions beyond the pale, and the vicissitudes of the courts. Well written, in journalistic style, this is a page-turner, as well as being thoroughly researched, and factually accurate.

    5 out of 5 stars Class Action.......2006-05-09

This is by far one of the best books I have ever read. This is something our school kids should be required to read as well. The 2 ladies who wrote this book did an excellent job of telling Lois Jenson's real story. Her story, while tragic, needs to be told. The movie doesn't do this book justice.

5 out of 5 stars Class Action. Review from a reader.......2006-04-17

This is a must read for anyone considering a civil suit. Unlike the other reviewers, I did not feel this book glorified the lawyers. On the contrary, Bingham and Gangsler went further than any other writer by exposing the cost of litigation - the abuse and exploitation of injured litigants by lawyers and judges who make their living off our courts. Lori Jenson is the only heroine in this story. Through the authors I felt her pain and realized her sacrifice for all of us.

But, the screenwriters of North Country made a mistake by concentrating on the sexual harassment part of this story in their version of this book. It is as if they did not read past the first few chapters. The screen writers either missed the message or underestimated the fears of litigants in the over 100 million cases filed each year in American courts. The wider scope of injustice, the legal and judicial wrongs exposed in this book, would have made a better story. But, even if you appreciated the movie, North Country, you need to read this story. The truths it reveals about America's justice system demands that Class Action be a part of everyone's personal library.

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Excellent exemplifications of the egregious flaws of CBT.......2007-02-23

Unfortunately, I loaned my copy of this book and can't provide exact quotes to make my case. But I remember enough to make my main point. The problem with CBT, as exemplified in this book, is that the authors are grossly unempathic and moralistic, therefore, fated to generate only accommodating clients who disrespect their interiors. This is a prescription for repression and symptom substitution.

To make my case, I refer readers to therapy sessions in which clients are cheer led and otherwise cajoled to reimagine their rape experiences. Clients report that reliving the experience is near as grueling as the rape was. The sweetly delivered message of this therapy is, "Get over it." There's no sense that the fears these people experience are complicated and, ultimately, useful experiences full of shame about feeling afraid and longings for comforting and other expressions of profound, live giving sympathy.

Gradually, clients desensitize in the hands of these therapists' cruel regimen. They get over their fears, but the side-effects--the loss of contact with and disempathy toward rich inner experiences--are egregious. This truly is a triumph of moralistic thinking in which therapists conceive of negative thoughts--read, parts of the self--as impulses that must be gotten rid of.

The authors obliquely respond to this critique of their core work and try to dispel it, saying that they are not promoting positive thinking. But that's exactly what this therapy is.

Okay, so I'm being brutal too. I'm hoping that the spiteful elements of my critique are viewed as understandable human reactions to what many prominent therapists think of as an inhumane therapy. It's reasonable to be angry at a therapy one perceives as damaging, especially when some of one's friends have been hurt by it, as a few of my friends have.

At least I know I'm being cruel and have a reason for relating that way. My words are passionate more than spiteful. I'm upset that this culture-bound therapy has taken in so many bright people. And I'm upset about the damage I've seen it do to people who don't succeed at accommodating to this therapy, as well as the ones who do. It makes them feel inadequate, unhelpable, and deserving of abandonment.

If, like me, you want to find examples of the flaws of CBT to serve as as contrasts to the facets of a more humane therapy, this book is well worth its price.

Treating the Trauma of Rape may be heavy fare for survivors and their families...however, it is a complete treatment manual for therapists. The step by step explanations of treatment tactics...even the controversial ones...makes this a valuable tool in any therapist's practice. There are straight-forward styles of treatment, problems and cases that make the reading simple but not easy on the spirit. Not a self-help book by any means...share it with your doctor or with your client.

      Book Description

A glance here, a flirtation there, a moment of  misunderstanding. Have the new rules of feminist  politics gone too far? Since Katie Riophe's book  The Morning After helped spark a  national debate over the politics of date rape, the  media has focused on controversial sexual behavior  of all kinds. Proponents of what has come to be  called sexual correctness contend that we live in a  culture where date rape, pornography, and sexual  harassment are simply facts of life that demand a  new sexual standard. Opponents argue that these  claims are born out of a victim mentality they see  as pervasive in the modern feminist movement that  threatens to rob women of the gains of sexual  freedom. As the successfull Dell title  Debating PC did in 1992, Debating  Sexual Correctness brings together some of  the best known and most important voices in this  debate. From the editorial pages of magazines as  diverse as The New Republic and  Glamour, The New York  Times and Playboy, the  country's most thoughtful social critics define or  debunk this very controversial notion of sexual  correctness. Katie Roiphe, Camille Paglia, Naomi  Wolf, Andrea Dworkin, Catherine MacKinnon, and Susan  Faludi are only a few of the writers in this  provocative anthology that looks at a highly charged  debate that has encompassed a nation.

        Book Description

A student creates a Web site that contains fake obituaries of fellow students. The school suspends him. His parents then sue and win in court.

Incidents of bullying, harassment, and threats in schools are growing, but the line between students' rights to expression and the school's rights to protect children and faculty is increasingly blurred. To create effective disciplinary and management policies, educators need to understand the legal ramifications of their actions. Bullying and Harassment: A Legal Guide for Educators provides the practical information that they need to help students while avoiding litigation pitfalls.

In language readily understandable to administrators, teachers, and other school personnel, educator and attorney Kathleen Conn examines the various twists and turns of the legal issues, including

        * The distinction between bullying and teasing;
        * Civil rights and free speech protection under the U.S. Constitution;
        * Legal definitions of harassment based on gender, race, religion, and disability;
        * Student threats of violence against schools or classmates;
        * Internet-enabled forms of bullying and harassment; and
        * Appropriate guidelines for both short- and long-term responses.

Using recent court cases and school events that made major headlines, Conn explains how educators should respond to incidents where the law isn't clear and where different court interpretations seem to apply. With its timely information and analysis, Bullying and Harassment shows how every educator can take a proactive stand to ensure safe schools and communities.

        Book Description

Originally published in 1993, this pioneering anthology is a powerful polemic for fundamental cultural change: the transformation of basic attitudes about power, gender, race, and sexuality. This edition adds new pieces on Internet pornography, the role of sports in sexual violence, and rape as a calculated instrument of war. The diverse contributors, which include bell hooks, Andrea Dworkin, Michael Messner, Yvette Flores, and Ntozake Shange, are activists, opinion leaders, theologians, policymakers, educators, and authors of both genders who tackle such hot-button issues as pornography and the intersection of race and rape.

The book's statistics have been thoroughly updated, as have essays about sexual violence in K-12 schools and in the church. New pieces from within America's immigrant communities depict struggles with domestic violence, sexual harassment, and community stigmas against reporting rape. This violence, not limited to one race, creed, or nationality, has its roots in cultural biases that are still much in need of change.

1 out of 5 stars The Misandrist Feminists of America.......2006-01-26

The MF's once again have used a real issue (rape) as a means to drive a wedge between the sexes and pretend as if the source of all evil resides in one gender. I can't take seriously any research, conclusions, statistics, or anything else that derives from the minds and lips of misandrists like Dworkin--a person who believes that sexual thrusting on the part of a man should be discontinued. Who are you kidding? The human beings five-starring this book are complicit in this crime of opportunity. The real agenda on all MF fronts is to permanently divide women from men by any and all means necessary, the primary means being fear and propaganda. And I can hear all the screeching now: HE IS DEFENDING MEN WHO RAPE WOMEN! Not at all. I'm condemning MFs who use rape to scare women into thinking that every man they meet is a potential rapist or would-be rapist. I also resent the MF inability to recognize that women engage in sexual gamesmanship, seduction, and sexual domination behavior.

2 out of 5 stars More Radical Feminism.......2005-09-12

This book is like so many earlier feminist-oriented gender/rape books, I found it hard to dissect the information from the familiar propaganda.

I don't need to be convinced that the gender bias in our culture adds to the instances of rape. This has been established time and time again.

How about a fresh way of describing and dealing with this?

Transforming a Rape Culture, by Milkweed Editions is a book that has input from thirty-seven active feminists; twenty-five women and twelve men, who all play different roles in life. Their occupations range from book and article writers, to psychologists, speakers, teachers, parents, and more. Having many authors, instead of just one, gives this book an advantage over one author's opinion. It was definitely written to spark an emotion in everybody to make change. The book's topic effects and influences everybody in some way in life to make a change, even if it's just within themselves. It succeeded in doing so. The book analyzes the factors in our culture, which promote and support not only rape, but also sexual assault, and harassment. It also presents ideas and methods to end it. All the sections throughout this book are linked nicely together giving it a strong analytical flow from all the authors - all seeking nothing less than a fundamental culture change with a method achieve it through the change of power, gender, race, and religion.

5 out of 5 stars One of the most important books you will ever read.......2002-11-16

This is a compilation of essays written by many prominent (female and male) feminist activists against sexual violence. I was inspired by all of the essays. A few of them were presented in a way that I did not particularly agree with, but even then I still strongly agreed with the essence of what they were saying (and found it extremely important and eye opening). If you are a survivor of sexual abuse, rape, any kind of sexual violence (we all have experienced some aspect of the sexual violence that pervades our culture), or you care about ending sexual violence then this book will help. Transforming a Rape Culture was published in 1993, I was fifteen, I wish I had read it then (it would have been late, but it would have educated me on protecting myself, and that I was worth being protected). This book is original and truly ground breaking. These writers are saying extremely important things that have often been overlooked; they are opening our eyes to our entire society, and they have real solutions. I found validation for what I believe in. The message of these authors speak to both men and women, but it is also intended to help men see the importance of these issues that have previously been considered only part of women's agenda. The point is clearly made by this book that the most important aspect of the women's movement has not yet been achieved, but it is possible to achieve if it is given the priority that it deserves. I believe that it is possible for the day to arrive that acts of sexual violence would be a shocking anomaly, and people will talk openly about it without shame or fear.

        5 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......2000-02-29

This is one of the most brilliant anthologies I have ever read. Each of the essays contributes to the overall point, which is that we live in a culture where sexual violence is a terrifying companion to too many women and children.

        Book Description

Sexual harassment is an issue in which feminists are usually thought to be on the plaintiff’s side. But in 1993—amid considerable attention from the national academic community—Jane Gallop, a prominent feminist professor of literature, was accused of sexual harassment by two of her women graduate students. In Feminist Accused of Sexual Harassment, Gallop tells the story of how and why she was charged with sexual harassment and what resulted from the accusations. Weaving together memoir and theoretical reflections, Gallop uses her dramatic personal experience to offer a vivid analysis of current trends in sexual harassment policy and to pose difficult questions regarding teaching and sex, feminism and knowledge.
Comparing “still new” feminism—as she first encountered it in the early 1970s—with the more established academic discipline that women’s studies has become, Gallop makes a case for the intertwining of learning and pleasure. Refusing to acquiesce to an imperative of silence that surrounds such issues, Gallop acknowledges—and describes—her experiences with the eroticism of learning and teaching. She argues that antiharassment activism has turned away from the feminism that created it and suggests that accusations of harassment are taking aim at the inherent sexuality of professional and pedagogic activity rather than indicting discrimination based on gender—that antiharassment has been transformed into a sensationalist campaign against sexuality itself.
Feminist Accused of Sexual Harassment offers a direct and challenging perspective on the complex and charged issues surrounding the intersection of politics, sexuality, feminism, and power. Gallop’s story and her characteristically bold way of telling it will be compelling reading for anyone interested in these issues and particularly to anyone interested in the ways they pertain to the university.

        1 out of 5 stars nauseating.......2006-01-26

For decades, many male professors have made the same excuses for sexual exploitation of their students--to the fury of feminists. To read a feminist using the same rationalizations is both nauseating and infuriating.

        3 out of 5 stars A Provocative Appeal.......2001-12-27

Jane Gallop's 1997 tract, "Feminist Accused of Sexual Harrassment," is not meant to be an apology for her run in with academic and legal bureaucracies. The tract is not criticism nor critical theory as such. Instead, Gallop gives us an intensely personal overview and examination of her involvement in feminism, culturally and scholastically, since her exposure to the movement in the early 1970s. Gallop's writing is casual, even colloquial, and addresses the various socio-sexual facets of the student-professor relationship, and how they have changed between the early 70s and to-day.

In 1992, Gallop was served notice that she had been accused by two former students of hers of sexually harrassing them. As a feminist, Gallop discusses the initial strangeness in perception that this may generally cause: the fact that most harrassment cases are normally male to female, not female to male, or female to female. She looks at the history of the feminist movement and sexual harrassment as its legacy from the late 1980s and early 1990s. Gallop talks about her explicitly sexual relationships with her own professors as a student, and with students as a professor herself. Making clear that since she began dating her eventual husband, she has completely stopped having these explicit relationships with students, Gallop details the important ways that relationships between students and professors can yet be erotically-charged.

Gallop's defiance of the academic and professional establishment may come off looking like willing ignorance or wistful naivete, but an undercurrent of anger and disappointment runs throughout the tract. Gallop laments the apparent cold distance and rigid formality being fostered in the current environment of academia. She asks if it should be the province of decor and propriety to decide how professors influence students and how students (especially graduate students) select and respond to the professors who guide their development.

While there is in the tract some longing for the days of yore and this is, above all, the personal and intimate reflections of one person, it is important to remember that Gallop does not ask every reader to agree with her assessments or abide by her conclusions. Gallop makes quite clear at the outset that her goal in placing this work before the public is simply to encourage its readers to reexamine the erotics of education - for feminists to reconsider the initial projects of feminism - and for each reader to decide if and how they will allow their every move to be overdetermined by needlessly oversensitive bureaucratic and legal manipulations. "Feminist Accused of Sexual Harrassment" is meant to provoke thought and discussion - those who would levy judgments against Gallop without pondering her arguments or talking about them in some kind of community risk missing the point entirely.

        1 out of 5 stars Insanity!.......2000-08-04

I could not agree more that this is "shrill, unconvincing screed." I might also add that for a Professor who teaches psychoanalytic theory, Ms. Gallop doesn't seem to have a clue about the mechanisms of DENIAL, RATIONALIZATION and NEGATION. The unconscious is speaking very clearly through all this nonsense, if anyone cares to find it where it is, all on the surface. My condolences go out to her poor students, past and present, who have to put up with this psychotic pretentiousness.

4 out of 5 stars Problematic, powerful, provocative.......2000-05-26

This is a fascinating, jolting, unsettling book. Gallop makes a disturbingly persuasive (and entertaining) case for the essential harmlessness of sexual relationships between professors and students. Ultimately, I disagree with her thesis for reasons similar to those cited by the other reviewers -- despite her feminist credentials (which are first-rate), Gallop fails to see how the erotic nature of the power differential is a destructive one. It's not that she doesn't acknowledge the power imbalance between teachers and students -- she does -- but she suggests that the imbalance can be easily overcome by entering into consensual amorous relations. (As if once a student and a professor sleep together, all the elements of power are suddenly, uh, "stripped" away!) I am a young male college professor, and I see all too well the temptations in such relationships. But I believe sexual relationships with my students to be fundamentally unethical because if I do sleep with my students (as Gallop slept with hers), I am "trading on" my power, and viscerally reinforcing the notion that for young women sexuality is an appropriate means of getting what you want.

I am glad that most professors are not like Jane Gallop. I am grateful, however, that we HAVE Jane Gallop -- and I sense, whatever her ethics, that she truly must be a marvelous teacher. I reject her thesis, but I applaud her daring and recommend this book enthusiastically, especially to graduate students and younger faculty!

2 out of 5 stars Shrill, unconvincing screed.......1999-09-09

In this shrill, unconvincing screed Jane Gallop, a noted feminist scholar, seeks to establish a constellation of questionable ideas about what she calls the eroticism of teaching and learning. Her reminiscences about being a young scholar in the emerging field of feminism are occasionally moving. At the same time, her claims that the charged relationship between teacher and student should have no boundaries raise far many more questions than she is disposed to answer.

Even if, in the field of feminism, issues of women's sexuality and sexual power *are* key to the scholarly enterprise, Gallop nowhere concedes that a teacher is more powerful than a student or that, because of that disparity in power, boundaries are needed to protect both teacher and student from the temptation to misuse that power. Rather, Gallop giddily celebrates as imperative the erasing of any and all boundaries. That two of her students then charged her with sexual harassment seems, to this reader at least, a sad and predictable case of reaping what one sows. That the university committee rendered an inconclusive verdict in the case seems more an instance of a committee seeking to push a distasteful matter over the side into oblivion than any miscarriage of justice -- let alone the betrayal of the teaching process that Gallop claims it to be.

Unlike Tibor Machan (whose review appears immediately above), I do not think that it matters what sex or gender Gallop is; the book would be a mostly silly, embarrassing exercise in self-justification no matter who wrote it.
