I have listened to a few recordings by these authors and find this particular recording not as superior as Ask and It Is Given, Part II, The Processes. I would not purchase this item again if I could do it over.
Abraham & Vibrational Energy Concepts .......2007-09-05
This is a very good book on CD, and is life-changing material, if you are willing to believe in something that may sound VERY different to you. Most people do not believe in this way. "The Amazing Power of Deliberate Intent" is the entire CD. Part 1 is "Living the Art of Allowing" and is a collection of 4 CDs, narrated mainly by Jerry Hicks. Part 2 is "Living the Path to Joy Through Energy Balance" and is a second collection of 4 CDs. You really want to buy both packages to get the entire book.
Abraham is a collective consciousness who speaks to Esther. She then relays the material. The material speaks primarily of metaphysical energy and its relationship to all that there is. It goes in-depth into manifestation by aligning your personal vibrational energies to match what you really want. Again, I know that's a hard concept to swallow, but that is the Law of Attraction. You really DO get what you think about. I have been studying metaphysical energy for about the last 7 or 8 years and I have seen the evidence soooo many times. Unfortunately, because of fear and control and many other negative personal vibrations, people usually think about what they DON'T want and that is what they manifest. Put simply, instead of seeing their car running smoothly on a log trip, they worry "What if it breaks down?". Instead of thinking about money in a positive way, they usually think of a LACK of money, and generally worry about it. So, they usually get what they do NOT want.
Anyway, this set of CDs not only explains the concept very well, but gives real-life examples and examples of the proper (aligned) thinking versus the non-aligned (improper) thinking, so you can begin to change your vibration to attract what you DO want. Like I said though, you need both CDs and an open mind, a VERY open mind. You also need to really work at this vibrational change to achieve successes with it. Even when you do achieve successes, it's hard to believe because we were just not conditioned to believe this way.
All that said, it's a great product and these are not the only authors talking about vibrational energy matching to manifest. What they say is right on target.
CD1, this set is slightly less than 2 and a half hours. The other CD set is slightly more than 2 and a half hours. Both sets together total over 5 hours of audio book material which you can easily listen to in the car on your way to work. These 8 CDs have the potential to change your life.
Further Insight Into The Laws Of Attraction.......2007-08-08
I have purchased and listened to all the Abraham-Hicks material available and next to the actual "Laws Of Attraction" CD, this CD has to be the most insightful in furthering the distinctions of the actual Laws of Attraction. It has been very useful to me as a coach of the material and has helped my clients immensely. I would recommend it to any student of the Laws of Attraction to help give them a better understanding of how the laws work.

A front runner.......2007-06-25
The first edition of this book was 1990 (second in 1996) before the current wave of books on intuition/psi and mind/body science was on the horizon. At that time, Nadel had been "exploring intuition, both personally and professionally" for fifteen years. Nadel was therefore one of the pioneers in this subject. That her work is still relevant today says something of its timeless quality.
What is not shown in Amazon's "Search Inside" feature of the latest edition is the preface in which Laurie Nadel describes the pivotal experience that began all this: she had travelled to San Fransisco to look for work, in 1975: She had never been there before but there was no place to stop and ask for directions. "Something" told her which turnings to take - left or right - at each intersection. After about twenty minutes she slammed on the brakes, questioning her sanity - only to realise that the offices she was looking for were only several buildings away. There was no "logical" explanation for this.
Not only did this incident inspire me to experiment for myself, I also very much liked the balance of the "rational and intuitive" that Nadel encourages. It's therefore great to see an updated edition of this book.
Nadel gives practical exercises and suggestions for explorations that are both creative and down-to-earth. This is particularly useful; although there are books now that describe recent research into the power of "non-local" mind, readers will want to know how to apply these new discoveries in their personal lives - and nothing facy or time-consuming. No special techniques, either.
Authors published recently such as Lynne McTaggart (The Intention Experiment) Bruce Lipton (The Biology of Belief) and Dawson Church (The Genie in Your Genes) inspire us with reports of incredible discoveries, and suggest special ways of drawing on our new-found mind powers. However, Laurie Nadel brings an everyday, practical approach to the whole subject that is refreshing and helpful.
Certainly, authors like Dawson Church stun us with reports that a group of people could "unwind" (activate) a sample of DNA at a distance of a 1/2 mile. I will continue to refer to his book (and other authors) for inspiration, but I have returned to Laurie Nadel's "Sixth Sense" for a practical, everyday approach.
After the initial euphoria of "The Secret" we need something as pragmatic as "The Sixth Sense." Particularly helpful if you have, like many others, had your own intuitive experiences and didn't know what to do with them.

This book is a gem, though I agree with several reviewers that the cover illustration is a poor choice. Luckily, it was one of the few poor choices that the author allowed into this book. The sequence of exercises, the illustrations and the well constructed mental imagery make a topic that is very difficult to "wrap you head around", feel accessible. This is a difficult task because few persons that have any grasp of the material covered in this book would even attempt to teach it without a hands-on face-to-face access to a student. Teaching this material is made even more difficult since our culture imparts many social difficulties in even speaking about this portion of the anatomy.
I teach taiji and various moving meditations and have some knowledge of numerous martial arts and meditative body works that all consider subtle control of the pelvic floor muscles to be a critical step in internal energy work. Teaching or coaching a person to mentally discover, and then actively work with these muscles can be very difficult, for all the reasons Eric Franklin outlines in this book. If the only thing that I got from this book was improving my repertoire of images for working with students it would have been a great find. However, the most important aspect of this book was that I found his exercises helped me to improve my own connection with, and sensation into, these important integrators of my internal somantic space. I wish to express my sincere gratitude to the author for this book, the gratitude that a student feels towards a teacher when new learning blossoms. Thank you
This book helps with Incontinence Issues.......2007-09-12
I am a Pilates Studio owner and instructor, and a lot of my female clients who have had children, suffer from incontinence. It's just something they cannot control. It is very embarrassing. Every time they sneeze or cough they lose control of their bladder. This book helps them to understand how to work the muscles of the pelvic floor to stop incontinence. It is very informative. It has also given me other ideas for exercises specifically for this problem. I would recommend anyone with this problem to get this particular book.
The most practical book!.......2007-05-10
I highly recommend this book to whoever wants to understand the mechanics of the pelvis, and identify pelvic imbalances and increase awareness of the pelvis to the rest of the body, especially for physical therapists, structural bodyworkers, and movement re-educators. The author guides the reader through step by step instruction to increase awareness of body landmarks, movement, breath, and holding patterns with well-described sentences and lots of helpful illustrations.
By understanding the relationship between sitz-bones, tail bone, pubes, anterior iliac spine, femur, spine, organ, and breath, the application of this book is tremendous.
My "seeing" skill (structural assessment) is significantly enhanced and identifying muscular and movement imbalances have become much clearer and easier.
I am grateful that Eric Franklin wrote this book because I am able to help my clients with leg length discrepancy, lower back pain, foot pain, knee pain, hip pain, poor posture with a clearer understanding of mechanics, structure and movement.

Typically when you think of a page-turner you think of fiction, but this is just as engaging and well-written and interesting and alive and so informative. An excellent addition to anyone's mind-body-spirit library. I read it in a few hours but definitely want to reread it soon b/c it's that valuable!

In my earlier years, I was a teaching fellow in physiology and a research biochemist. I have a strong background in physiology, but later I went back to school for psychology and my studies included work in somatic psychology. I am also a meditation instructor and do a lot of public speaking on various topics related to the mind-body issue. I also use biofeedback in my practice, so these kinds of books are part of my meat and potatoes living.
In this volume, Mr. Franklin has done an EXCEPTIONAL job of describing the structure, function and importance of the pelvic area and how to strengthen and balance it. He takes a very integral approach to the connection between mind and body and the book although a bit of a difficult read for people without some background in biology is still very accessible. This accessibility is partly due to the detailed and easy to follow descriptions, organization of material and excellent diagrams that clearly illustrate key points.
This book also covers beliefs about the flow of energy through the pelvis and it's relationship to other body systems and the mind as understood by the various world's wisdom traditions. There are also good exercises to explore these concepts from the inside yourself.
I think this is a most own book for any massage therapist, athlete, dancer or yoga instructor who wants a deep understanding of the pelvis, how to strengthen it and how it contributes to the overall health of the body. This is truly a unique book and worthwhile read.

His Idea - Baby Steps - to Simplify His Theory of What to Do.......2006-07-17
I feel like I have been on an overdose of these books having read House of Bush, House of Saud by Craig Unger (excellent book) - the biggest tell all blockbuster, The Choice by Zbigniew Brzezinski, Disarming Iraq, by Hans Blix, Noam Chomsky's Hegemony of Survival, Thirty Days (about Tony Blair) by Peter Stothard, and Price of Loyalty, Paul O'Neill, Why America Slept by Gerald Posner, Against All Eneamies by Richard Clarke, and the Rise of the Vulcans by Mann and Mann. I put together a "listmania" list of the 25 best books - the best books - mainly non political, no strong bias conservative or liberal - a spectrum of opinion when you take them all together.
There is certainly a wide variety of views and all of these books are excellent. I have read and for the most part digested the views and ideas and I would strongly recommend any or all of these books to get a diverse view. One cannot begin to give these books justice in book reviews. In any case there are generally two types of books, i.e: the "gotcha" books which try to show how Bush has made errors or done something illegal such as the Craig Unger book, or the "solution books" like Brzezinski, Soros and Chomsky.
Of all the "best seller" books on the market I would consider this present book by Brzezinski to be one if not the best books that deals with terrorism, the invasion of Iraq, and the future role of the US. Perhaps not the most exciting read (I think Unger's book takes that title) but still this is an excellent book. In this book he is very diplomatic in his comments of the current administration and he presents many well thought out ideas on how to deal with the Muslim countries, American demographics, how the world views the US etc. In some of the other books by say Chomsky or Soros some of the ideas are in fact quite similar to Brzezinski. Here he is also against unilateral action but he manages to calm down the rhetoric plus he suggests that some sort of world government or similar is not realistic and is many generations off. So instead of say going to the UN and supporting the UN or World Court in any absolute way he suggests shorter term goals that are a combination of working much more closely with the Europeans and then expanding that relationship later in stages (my comment baby steps). Also he seems to advocate more support for the Muslim countries to permit them to develop economically and socially.
All in all a well thought out argument, it is well presented, and attempts to make the debate a little more rational.

To frame the problem of U.S. grand strategy, Brzezinski emphasizes several frames of reference from which to consider the current dilemma. His emphasis is not only on strategic imperatives but also on the moral, cultural and historical situation.
The only problem I find with the writing is that Brzezinski tends to become diverted into dissections of many what-if type scenarios. This is fine for a strategic studies expert, however, some of these digressions are somewhat far-fetched. Altogether, its a quick read with some interesting insights into how the U.S. and the world might best proceed.
A New Brave Multi-Polar World.......2005-08-29
ZB brilliantly analyzes the choices in front of USA, in its dealings with the rest of the World and the kind of role and status it can achieve and risks and feasibility of various possible policies. He is characteristically far reaching, almost mathematically precise and complete.
Though he is objective and does not promote any particular ideology other than the balanced and realistic welfare of USA, he is after all a man of "Detante". Those "entangling alliences" and the beloved NATO template keeps coming to the forefront. He is no unilateralist. He makes us aware that unless the current emerging powers such as China and India feel secure, and their vital interests secured, there can not be peace and stability for anyone. I think he understands dynamics of "Great Powers" better than most, and that is the World we are moving back to after all. The great polarization of East and West blocs, and to some degree North and South, have dissolved and a new multi-polar World has been emerging. He seems to have dismissed altogether that infamous "clash of civilizations".
It is a good read. There is a unique piece of insight and wisdom in almost every page. Well delivered and smooth. Stands out among many similar works. Highly recommended.
The Future of Hegemony.......2005-06-19
Zbigniew Brzezinski, former National Security Advisor and resident hawk of the Carter Administration, agrues in this excellent book that America is faced with a choice: either lead the world or try to dominate it. The correct answer or course is the former, and the Bush Administration has chosen the latter. Brzezinski is one of the brightest geostrategic thinkers in the firmament, and he offers a very clear and systematic policy statement on which direction this country should be going to achieve national security.
In the era of globalization, especially after 9/11, the link between national sovereignty and national security has been broken. With the growing interdependence of nation-states, our national security is increasingly in the hands of others. It is true, as President Bush claimed in the election campaign 2004 that we do not need permission from others to protect our security; it is also true that we need the cooperation of others in order to have security.
On a couple of points Brzezinski is in agreement with President Bush. The primary threat to international security comes from rogue or illiberal states - called the "Global Balkans" - that lie between the Suez Canal and the Khyber Pass, a part of the world that contains most of the world's oil and natural gas. The region also contains some of the most religiously inflamed, politically turbulent, and ethnically conflicted people on earth.
And to make matters even worse, they are festering with terrorist and criminal groups searching for weapons of mass destruction. It is in the interest of the civilized and energy hungry world to maintain stability.
America is the preponderant but not omnipotent power. America cannot stabilize the Global Balkans alone, nor with "coalitions of the willing." Brzezinski has a special place in his heart for Europe; he sees a healthy transatlantic alliance as the bedrock of global security. Europe and America are natural allies through shared history and culture. As a team our moral authority and political credibility would be greatly enhanced.
Another point at which Brzezinski is in agreement with the Bush Administration is on the primacy of American military power. Europeans and other allies understand, though they don't openly acknowledge, that global security is underwritten by American power. Brzezinski differs with the administration on how this power should be used. America may have the capablity of overthrowing rogue regimes in a few days or weeks, nevertheless, it still needs to build consensus in order to win a war. If the excercise of military power is not done with legitimacy will fail and backfire. Operations in Iraq (a good outcome is still possible) were executed in such a way that they spawned more terrorist groups, and even emboldened Iran and North Korea to press ahead with nuclear weapons development.
It was even more important to build consensus in the invasion of Iraq because, as we know now, it was a preventative war ( a war of choice), not a preemptive war from some imminent threat. The war in Iraq has given us greater insecurity, not only because it created new terrorists groups, but because our moral authority has been greatly undermined.
The task that Brzezinski lays before the Bush Administration is daunting given the events that have take place. And the European Union, for its part, cannot even agree on a budget and or a constitution, let alone a coherent global security policy. Nevertheless, American hegemony must be a consensual hegemony, not a domineering one. Globalism has brought us more interdependence, and global security can only be achieved through cooperation.

The geopolitical landscape evolves so fast that almost any book about global politics ages before the ink can dry. Zbigniew Brzezinski - known as one of the keenest students of American defense and diplomacy since his service in the Carter administration - urges European-American rapprochement over Iraq. He calls for a transition from a war against terrorism to a moral war for global equality and political representation, namely, democracy. No doubt due to unfortunate timing, his book does not account for recent democratic elections in the Middle East or for new transatlantic diplomatic initiatives. Disappointing overall.......2007-07-05
It is rarely that I have written less than a glowing review of any book dealing with the topics of globalization, outsourcing and the ilk. As someone who is intrigued by these issues, I have found all of my reads thus far to be riveting and educative. I wish I could I say the same about Oded Shenkar's book "The Chinese Century." I am afraid that was not the case.
The book suffers from some clear flaws. First and foremost is the fact that it focuses solely on one facet of the Chinese growth story, viz. exports and imports, and that too from a largely US-centric world view. For someone who is interested in understanding the different facets of the Chinese story and its geopolitical ramifications (as can be seen today in China's relations with Sudan, Iran, and Venezuela among others), this book clearly falls short.
Second, the tone adopted by the author is one of unbridled optimism regarding China's growth prospects. I, for one, do not necessarily share the same world view. No nation has been able to eat its cake and have it too. If you want to be a modern nation enjoying all the economic benefits that come out of a free market system, you also need to be a democracy that is built on the separation of powers between the executive and the judiciary, a free media and a vibrant middle class that is not afraid to speak up its mind. I am not sure China will be able to escape that painful transition at some point of time. The question is not "If", it is a question of "When". I would have therefore liked to see the author explain how China can make the transition from a communist nation ruled by a narrow clique to a modern nation without a democratic change thrown somewhere in between. I am afraid that he did not.
Finally to round off, I would also like to point out that the book suffers from typographical errors that are clearly unacceptable in a book published from Wharton School Publishing. Two examples, both from the same page (pg. 85 of the paper back edition) for the skeptics who need proof. "Finally, there is the potential liability and litigation cost when a safety-related product such as a break pad fails, and the legitimate manufacturer is implicated." Or, "The direct losses of U.S. IPR owners in copyrighted industries (such as movies) alone in China have been estimated at more than $1.8 annually." The proof reader probably needs to be told that it is not "break pads" but "brake pads" and that the losses to IPR owners are closer to $1.8 billion than $1.8!
Overall I am happy that the book finished at 187 pages. It's a disappointment though that not much of substance was said in those 187 pages.

"The Chinese Century" reminds us that our trade deficit with China is rapidly growing (up 20%/year from '01-'03), and also tells us that its composition is changing - the four highest categories in '03 were all technologically related (misc. manufactured articles, office machines and ADP equipment, telecommunications and sound-recording equipment, and electrical machinery). (Apparel/clothing and footwear were in 5th and 6th place, down from 2nd and 3rd in '99.)
Shenkar also imforms us that the Chinese are working to continue "moving up the food chain" via increasing the rate that overseas Chinese students return to China, increasing R&D spending within its organizations, and forcing overseas partners to provide valuable trade secrets. The percentage of American white-collar associated jobs lost in manufacturing has gone from 30% ('79-'89) to 35% ('90-'99), and is likely to increase further, shaking belief in the theorized overall benefit of job migration to more complex work, and the belief that education is good insurance against unemployment. (The unemployment rate for electrical engineers now is greater than the unemployment rate in general.)
China is often pilloried for violating intellectual property rights; Americans, however, should remember that the U.S. was also a major violator in the 19th century, and remained so until it emerged as a major producer of copyrighted/patented knowledge. Presumably China will follow a similar path. China is also attacked for not adjusting its exchange rate vs. the dollar - however, since its productivity-adjusted costs are about 12% that in the U.S., currency adjustment would not begin to solve the U.S.-China trade deficit. In addition, Americans need to remember that China needs to create 15 million new jobs/year to handle population growth, plus additional jobs to cover those lost due to closing ineffective government enterprises and rural residents wanting to move to its cities.
The book's avowed purpose is not on how to stop the tide of Chinese imports, but how to remain competitive. Unfortunately, its recommendations (more education) fall far short of what would be required, and are contradicted by its own material.

It is obvious that China is rising and is impacting the rest of the world in an increasingly big way.
The value of The Chinese Century by Professor Oded Shenkar lies in its concise and vivid summary of China's rise and impact. As such, the author has achieved one of his goals he set out to achieve by writing this book.
However, the author clearly has not delivered what he promises to deliver in the Synopsis: "Above all, Shenkar shows what you must do to survive and prosper in "the Chinese Century"."
Indeed, as a business person, you might get even more dazzled after reading this book simply because this book gives you an academic snapshot of the China business scene (although with some vivid examples) rather than insights into and wisdom about what to do in order to succeed.
To know the latter, you have to read Dr Wei Wang's The China Executive: Marrying Western and Chinese Strengths to Generate Profitability from Your Investment in China.
Highly practical, The China Executive brings to light the highest essence of any business in the age of globalisation. It is also characterised by integration: integration of theory and practice, integration of analysis and intuition - integration, in other words, of all major concepts and ideas related to business. These include history, soceity, politics, economics and culture; management and leadership; operation, personnel, finance and marketing; organisation, market, industry and strategy; and human being, philosophy and humour.
In short, if you, as a business person, want to know what to do (as well as how to think) in "the Chinese Century", buy and read The China Executive.

Author Oded Shenkar provides up-to-date information, specific
details, and perspectives about the current and future ascension of
China. It is and will affect us locally and globally. This book
focuses on generalities and will be helpful to those who plan on
doing business in China or want to learn more about the "macro"
affects of the PRC's growing influence. Perhaps too obvious to state
(again) is China's coming economic, political, and military role in
our world. By now, this concept is cliche. Yet the question is
relevant, and now, moreso than ever before. The "Chinese Century"
largely focuses on the next 100 years. Surpassing the U.S.
economically, is predicted to happen within the next twenty years.
Many American companies have been complacent and industry leaders
were caught of guard by China's massive growth. Lackadaisical?
fixed, mind-sets? Competitors in neighboring countries (e.g. Korea)
started losing out to China in the 1990s.
Some of the common questions and discussions that Shenkar addresses
are: "How will China's economic ascension will affect its region and
the entire world?" "How will it impact and transform the U.S.
economy?" "How will it change you?" The author notes the transition
of the American economy to a service-sector economy.
Domestically, the more challenging aspects for the CPC and Chinese
society are how to lessen and/or resolve the Income Gap between
Eastern cities and rural areas (and within these cities themselves).
Those in the eastern China are living in a radically different world
than those inland. Both of these groups are aware of the differences
between them as status symbols, faster-paced life, and incessant
conspicuous consumption propel attitudes, the economy, and egos.
There is quantifiable alienation between the "have-nots," who
outnumber the "haves" by hundreds of millions. Confrontations over
water and land-use, and eminent domain, are frequently reported.
Stealing Intellectual Property:
The Chinese can produce - but they cannot create. "Creativity" and
"ingenuity" are the new buzzwords of the government. Creativity may
or may not happen. If it is ever achieved to some degree, it will
take time (generations) and will require changes to the cultural
mindset and education system.
Implementing Foreign Policy Interests:
The U.S. acts upon its own self-centered interests like many dominant
nation-states. America's economic might promotes its diplomatic and
trade interests in the international world. Often these strengths
reinforce and complement one another when pressuring countries to "go
along" with the current administration in Washington, regardless of
who is in power.
The Chinese may do this too, if they choose to "go international."
I believe Chinese foreign policy will become more direct and
unilateral.
Economic might brings diplomatic, political, and potential military
might (if China continues its high military spending). Westerners
should realize that there's no motivation nor reason for the Chinese
people to want the values and beliefs of liberal democracies of the
West. To think they would, is culturally-centric arrogance.
Corruption:
Corruption exists in many countries of the world. In China it's an
epidemic from the bottom ranks to the highest levels of society. It
has to be dealt with. Even reducing it may take more than one or two
generations. Morality is also an issue. Hu Jintao recently outlined
the "8 honors and 8 shames" in 2004. Meant for the Chinese people,
but specifically geared towards party members. It's a general and
idealistic message. Will it be followed? This reinforces the fact
that rampant corruption, greed, and selfishness is a primary obstacle
to economic and political stability. Throughout East Asia
competition outweighs cooperation in business and social
interactions.
What will China be like when it has the economic power to promote its
interests?
The Chinese understand and realize they are "producers." They are
not "creators." They're not "individuals." However - if - they ever
become creative, adaptable, and individualistic, beware.
Incidentally, anyone who thinks that a market-based economy promotes
or is conducive to forms of "democratic representation" is completely
misinformed. The pairing of these two is the exception, not the
rule.
The U.S. derides Cuba for it authoritarianism and refuses to do
business with Cuba, while at the same time it's in bed with China,
which is far more brutal, oppressive, and venal.
A good book. Recommended.
Insightful and well-written .......2006-05-31
China is a quickly rising economy on the world stage and many liken it to another Japan on the horizon. However, there are as many differences as there are similarities between the rise of the Chinese economy and the rise of Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, or Hong Kong. These differences are critical if you are going to understand the impact this will have on the American and world economy. What is the legacy of China's history and how is that impacting their current economy? How is China dealing with (or not dealing with) the problem of piracy and bootlegging of legitimate products on the world market and how will that affect their position on the world market stage? The author deftly covers opportunities and challenges in the China market and in United States Chinese market. The Chinese Century is highly recommended for anyone who wishes to understand the Chinese market and the implications of that market for the United States.

Mr. Aikman has presented an excellent picture of the development of Christianity in China, right up to the present. It is very well written, enjoyable to read, and very informative. Having traveled to China on numerous occasions in recent years, I have found that my experiences have been confirmed by what he writes. This book is the best I have come across if you are looking for a picture of the recent development and situation of the church in China.

Jesus in Beijing is a well written account of the history of Christianity in China from 600 A.D. to the present. Most of the book deals with the 20th Century. In the early 1970's, after the oppression and persecution of Mao's Cultural Revolution some western observers wondered if Christianity still survived in China. As it turned out, the church was alive and well. In spite of persecution of varying intensity throughout the reign of the Communist Party in China, the church has grown from about three million to approximately seventy million people today. One of the most surprising things about this rapidly growing church is its response to the increasing affluence of freedom within China today. Instead of focusing on material pleasures and toys, much of the church is dreaming of evangelizing the predominately Muslim lands between China and Israel. They reason that the Chinese church already knows how to suffer poverty and persecution and feel that they are prepared to pay the price for spreading the Christian message in Muslim countries. The author's speculation about the impact of Christianity on China's geopolitical future are also very interesting. While the possibility of the emergence of China as a belligerent, adversarial superpower exists, the author feels that the influence of Christianity on China may lead to a future in which China and the United States may in fact become allies. An interesting, informative book. Highly recommended.
Two Jews - Marx & Jesus in China.......2006-11-18
Jesus in Beijing: How Christianity is transferring China and changing the Global Balance of Power, is a personal account of a reporter who dedicated the martyrs for their faith from CE 635 to modern time.
This book gives a brief orientation on how Christianity came to China in 7th Century known as Nestorian Christians. There was a stele commemorating this east-west cultural and religious exchange, being translated by James Legge in bilingual text that I happened to have a reprint copy. Then he carried on the history to the new millennium. Besides Franciscan, Dominican and Augustinian, Jesuits had a good relationship with the Royal Court in the exchange of knowledge in 17th Century. However, the Pope, a religion authority tried to interfere the cultural and internal affairs of China over the tradition rite of honoring ancestors and Confucius. The Chinese Emperors issued "Edit of Expulsion and Confiscation" to drive Catholics out. The 19th Century of Anglo-Saxon Protestant ventured back to China in opium boats and gunboats. No wonder why Marx called Religion is the opium of people. Robert Morrison, an Englishman, was credited to translate the Bible into Chinese with no mention to the assistance from his convert Liang Fa. Morrison came in and was employed by East India Company, the monopoly opium pusher and smuggler to Chinese. England waged the Opium Wars 1839 and 1856. He died of diseases and was buried in East India Company cemetery in Macau. The Gospel of John was beautifully translated in Taoist terms, totally disregard to intellectual property. Chinese God Son, Hong Xiuquan who wanted to establish Chinese version of Kingdom of Heaven, made the Christian Tai Ping Rebellion. However, this Heavenly Peace Kingdom was brutally suppressed by the Christian Europe in manpower and gun power in support with The Ching Dynasty The 1900 Boxer Movement was a struggle against foreigners especially missionaries. The book did not mention two humiliating unequal treaty terms known as most-favored nation clause meaning if a foreign power squeezed any Chinese concessions, all other powers would share the same privileges, and extra-territoriality which meant all foreigners in China were not subject to the laws and jurisdiction of Chinese government. This book did not ask the question: why Boxer pick on the disciples of "love your neighbors as yourself"? These God's representatives did not practice what they peach. There were many exceptions such as American Rev. Hunter Corbett, whose grandson I met last year. The American share of Boxer Indemnity was devoted to Chinese higher education with heavy lobby. (See articles in magazine Chinese American Forum).
The Three Self Churches was created by Chinese Christians in 1920s not in 1950s as alleged, to declare independence from foreign masters who dictated power, donations and policy, long before Mao's regime to administer patriotic church affairs. A Chinese pastor confirmed recent incidence of such hard-nose attitude and he rebuked and refused such conditional funding. The subsequent chapters described Christian mainly protestant house church activities and politics under Mao's Republic. Only one chapter was about Roman Catholics. Chapter 14 talked about missionaries came in disguise as English teacher by lies and deception. In mid 90s, some feverish American missionaries came to recruit Chinese converts to smuggle Bibles to China. Why not they themselves do the dirty work? This chapter also exposed a home grown quasi-Christian cult know as Eastern Lightning with an reincarnation of Jesus as a Chinese woman along with others such as Born-Again movement, Falungong and Little Flock.
David gave an impressive detail account on the development of Christianity in China. It is "love your neighbor as yourself" doctrine to the teaching in the land of "do not do onto others as you do not want others do onto you". He devoted the last chapter in "China's Christian future?" with the possible answers - a more responsible power, an emerging menace, democracy and changing the fare of Christendom.
Reading this book creates the following questions.
1. Nestorian Christians came to China but died out long time, Mohammed established Islam and immediately sent his four disciples to China where they all left their body and soul in Beijing. Does it mean China will become Christian or Moslem?
2. China is a virgin land from missionary eyes, what will happen if all denominations ranging from Baptist, Mormon, Christian Scientist, Pentecostal, Jehovah's Witness, Seven-Days Adventists, Moon's Church to Branch Davidian of Waco Texas claim their share and dominate with eventual government tanks crushing?
3. Will orthodox Christianity accept Chinese Gnostic Christians incorporating the teaching of Buddhism, Taoism and folk religions as cult members?
4. What will happen if Chinese Christians find out lie in be(lie)f, history and theology, Jesus and Christ, truth and faith, and Catholic and Protestant?
5. Will Chinese Christian burn witches, start Crusade killings, and turn hospitals into churches with faith healing miracle to avoid high medical cost?
6. Will Chinese Christian support stem cell research, abortion and the teaching of evolution?
7. Will US accept Chinese Christian made according to American compassion self image? (The allegation P.288 about China closed in upon great hostility to US between Korean War and Kissinger's visit was doubtful. If he researched further, he would find that Premier Chou En-lai always wanted American friendship but US red scare prevented it from happening. Chou extended his hand to the American official at the encounter of Indo-China Peace meeting 1954 and was refused. This is why Nixon upon arrival Beijing stepped up and extended his hand to Chou first for a 28-year make-up.)
8. Will the evangelical Chinese Christian on west journey to Jerusalem convert Moslems to bring about crush and confrontation?
9. Will foreign powers invade Christian China to protect national interest?
10. Will a Christian China lamb become the political and economic scapegoat when Christian brothers lose their jobs or rocket secrets?

12. The Bill of Rights came about because before American and French Revolutions in Christian world, there were only Divine rights and king's right, but not human rights. Was UN human right draft based on Christian or Confucius idea? Check it out.
13. Will Jesus laugh or cry if he witnesses his disciples instead of standing with him on humanity, justice and peace, destroy other ethnic cultures, change their value system and the mode of thinking?
14. Will Chinese Christian send back missionaries to first and second world countries to win back lost souls as major Cathedrals serve more as tourist attraction than houses of worship?
15. Will Chinese Christian make the same remarks as their American Indian brothers: We used to have land and they have the Bible; now we have the Bible and they have the land?
16. Will Chinese Christian be the blessed peacemaker on diversity harmony among the brotherhood of Judaism, Christianity and Islam as God is the Father of three faiths?
17. Will a powerful Christian China become an imperial or colonial power as their Christian brothers of 19th Century?
18. What will happen when Chinese Christians are Bible lover but ignorant about Buddhism and Taoism both of which are the spiritual salvation for Western seekers?
19. Will Chinese Christian want to have the best by declaring to be a Taoist-Christian as so claimed by my American campus minister friend?

21. The producer of River Eulogy, Yuan Zhiming and company dreamed of democracy in China based on Christianity. He tried hard to adapt by misinterpreting and distorting ancient Chinese Classics to convert. It is interesting to ask why Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek, a devoted Christian failed miserably in bringing about democracy even some of his supporters baptized their troops with garden hose.
22. Will a Christian China become American two-party or European multi-party democracy? Why a high number of Christian countries notably in Africa and South America are not relevant?
23. What will happen if China becomes a theocracy?
24. Will Chinese Christian accept from the DNA burden of "Communist five black types" to that of "Original sin"?

A FERTILE, WELL-TILLED LAND.......2006-09-27
As China re-emerges as a dominant power in the 21st century, much will hinge on the beliefs of the people in that country when it comes to the actions it takes and tolerates around the world. Oddly, the fascism of the Communist regime remains largely in place in the era following Mao's disastrous reign, even as capitalism and other Western ideals spread like wildfire through this huge, heavily-populated, and (from a Western perspective)oftentimes strange land. Aikman does an excellent job of covering the basic bullet points of the history of Christianity in China, as well as introducing readers to the many Chinese Christians who have led or continue to lead the church in their country. On a recent trip to China, I was highly impressed by the deep generosity, humility, resourcefulness, strength, perseverance, and kindness exhibited by Chinese of all ages. This spirit hums just below the surface in the stories Aikman tells of the Christian Chinese and their faith. This spirit is also, I believe, one of the major reasons why the life and teachings of Jesus seem to so easily take root in the hearts of so many Chinese. Also, those who are concerned that a "Christian China" would somehow gut the land of its culture and heritage while propping up a Westernized facsimile in its place should rest easy. It seems that the faith is spreading through this nation in a very distinctly Chinese way.
God's Work in China Prospers.......2006-04-11
Aikman turns a reporters eye to a careful analysis of the incredible move of God in Mainland China over the past 30 years. Three significant movements are identified and explored -- the Underground Church -- the Revival within the Three Self Church -- and the unusual influence of Christian scholars in Chinese culture. Captivating reading -- but apparently the naming of names and inclusion of pictures of famous Christians in China has led to some increased persecution.
Aikman's assertion that some day the critical mass of Christianity will reach the tipping point and bring sweeping social change has proven to be an embarassment to the government, And if there is one thing the government of China won't stand for, it's being embarrassed. Read it with discretion.

The Unipolar Moment?.......2003-06-16
This collection of essays seeks to explain why, despite its overwhelming power, the world has not balanced against the United States. Several well-noted authors give varying answers. The first essay, appropriately enough, is written by the founder of Structural Realism, Kenneth Waltz. Waltz answer is simply that the world will eventually balance against American power, and in fact has started to do so already. Waltz explains that in an anarchic system,"overwhelming power repels, and leads others to balance against it." Furthermore, Waltz sees Unipolarity as unstable, as the hegemon may be tempted to overexpand. Waltz concludes that the unipolar moment is exactly that, a brief time in history that will be over the blink of an eye. But Waltz made much the same case in 1993. The world has not yet balanced against the US, and history has yet to prove him right. Taking the opposite approach, William C. Wohlforth argues that the current unipolar system is actually very stable. This is so due to several factors. First, Wohlforth notes that balancing is very difficult to successfully execute. Also, unlike previous hegemons, America's power is so great that it crosses the threshold where balancing against it becomes impossible. Also unlike previous hegemons, the US is not located geographically nearby the other powers. Therefore, it does not directly threaten most states as much as their neighbors do. It is therefore better for states to rely on the US for protection from its own neighbors, than to balance against America. Wohlforth thus sees a continuation of the peaceful relations that have existed since the end of the Cold War. These two essays are most likely the ones that will receive the most attention since they predict future events based on structure. But somewhat dissapointingly, neither addresses the argument made by John Mearsheimer in his book that other states will not necessarily balance against the United States itself, but against the United States in their respective regions. Mearsheimer, unlike Wohlforth, does not see the system as global but regional. Therefore China will balance against US power in the Far East, not against global US power and interests. Mearsheimers's argument fall somewhere between Waltz and Wohlforth. Its a shame neither one addresses it.
The other articles in this book are more policy-oriented. Charles Kupchan claims that it will be very hard to sustain domestic support in America for the resources necessary to maintain unipolarity. He also believes the EU to be much farther along the road to unity than most realize, and he sees a balance of power between the US and EU in the future. Stephen Walt, advancing his balance of threat hypothesis, urges American policymakers to act and speak in a restrained manner, which will convince the world that the US does not have aggressive designs. Josef Joffe praises the US policy of overlapping alliances as a copy of Bismark's hub and spoke system, which he believes will serve to create a peaceful world, due to America's overwhelming capabilities. There are also some non-realist authors who make the case for other variables. John Ikenberry advances the importance of international institutions in creating a peaceful world, arguing that the "Western order has a structure of institutions and open polities that bind states together, thereby mitigating the implications of power assymetries and reducing the possibilities of the United States to abandon or dominate other states." Ikenberry argues that insitutions have a life of their own and make it difficult for states to do other than what the institutions specify. Its not a new theory, and realist critiques will most likely be the same: Instiutions do what states want them to do, not vice-versa. Although there are no realist critiques of the Ikenberry piece in this volume, it is hard to imagine any realist worth his weight in salt arguing otherwise.

Powerful meditations for those who are competent meditators! I found myself experiencing meditations that are very different. Can highly recommend this product.

Highly recommend to those who are wanting to work on opening to the experience of greater life force energy. When I am able to concentrate on Tom's guidance and my breathing, I get very powerful results from this technique. I am sometimes challenged with concentration, this is my own issue, but Tom is good at guiding you back, keeping you focused if your thoughts wander.

Finally someone wrote a book that also treats the interface from the solar cell to the operating conditions in a real environment.
Very nice are also the LCAs (including energy (and CO2) payback via recyling) for different sites of application.

This book explores the real potential of solar electric power generation in order to reduce CO2 emissions and prevent the planet from global warming. For this purpose the author analyses the entire energy balance of photovoltaic power plants during their life time from the production to the recycling - taking into account the whole system. He considers all optical interfaces and layers passed by the sunlight from the sun into the solar cell, thermal layout of any photovoltaic module and its heat transfer mechanisms, its related actual electrical properties, allowing an accurate calculation of yield and an optimization of system components, thus reducing costs for solar electricity. Different locations for production and installation of photovoltaic systems are also considered. The concluding message is: If applied in an intelligent way, global energy supply via photo-electric power generation is widely possible.

Just read this helpful little book. Daalder and Lindsay describe President Bush's post-9/11 foreign policy revolution. It's easy to read and is a fine introduction into the world of neoconservatism (though he doesn't really use the term "neocon" to describe Bush's worldview). The authors point out that the Administration is a bit more heterogenus than most recognize: some of the folks around the President really believed in the power of democracy, some believed that America must remain strong and assertive to protect its national interests. As has been told many times, Bush had his attention elsewhere prior to 9/11: a little foreign policy, but mostly domestic issues - and certainly almost no focus on terrorism. That changed, of course. We can all dispute the long-term impact of the supposed Bush revolution in foreign policy, but if things don't turn around soon in Iraq - and now Afghanistan - we may see another quick revolution back to a more realism-based look at the world. As Daalder and Lindsay pointed out, thankfully there are relatively few people who want to do away with an internationalist perspective. Retreating to within our borders and the believe that oceans can protect us has been thoroughly rebuked by reality. But that does not mean that the power of military preemption (or prevention) should be our stated right as a powerful nation.
Daalder and Lindsay are most powerful in their analyses of the major speeches and documents to come from President Bush and his administration.
Helpful book, but others are better: Rise of the Vulcans by James Mann is far more useful for understanding the different viewpoints of the Administration. That and he offers compelling of the major players in the Bush administration (although there is little discussion about Bush himself).
A Comprehensive Review of Bush Starting With the First Election.......2005-11-30
The present book is a compelling read and covers many but not all of the major issues on terrorism and Iraq.
I feel like I have been on an overdose of these books just having read House of Bush, House of Saud by Craig Unger - the biggest tell all blockbuster (my opinion), The Choice by Zbigniew Brzezinski (an excellent analysis), Disarming Iraq by Hans Blix, Noam Chomsky's Hegemony of Survival (truly a book that makes one think), Thirty Days (about Tony Blair) by Peter Stothard, and Price of Loyalty by Paul O'Neill (excellent book), Why America Slept by Gerald Posner, the very popular best seller Against All Enemies by Richard Clarke, and the Rise of the Vulcans by Mann and Mann. I put together a "listmania" list of the 25 best books - the best books - mainly non political taken together, no strong bias conservative or liberal - a spectrum of opinion when you take them all together.
Many of the books are "gotcha" books that link Bush with some wrong doings or alternately books like Brzezinski that lay out solutions. This book is a bit different. It is more of a chronological history, and the book has been highly acclaimed by the Economist, NY Times etc. After reading I can see why.
I started to read the present book and was unable to put it down until I had read it virtually cover to cover. It is a surprisingly good book and neutral in tone and a compelling read - for myself it was a page turner. It brings together the story of Iraq and WMD's in chronological order (all briefly). It starts with the Bush campaign and what he says in his run for the presidency regarding foreign policy, his philosophy, the team that he put together, plus the authors put in some historical perspective starting with Washington, then Wilson, Truman, etc. It then works its way through pre and post 9-11, Afghanistan and Iraq until late 2003.
Surprisingly I found that this book is in almost complete agreement with some of the more recent "tell all" books (Blix, O'Neill, Clarke), and I would strongly recommend reading this book. The overlying theme or conclusion is that the intelligence was flawed and incomplete. Like the Hans Blix book there were no WMD's in Iraq. The Iraq war was pushed by Wolfowitz and others prior to 9-11, and can best be described as a distraction or even an incitement of Muslims towards anti-Amercian feelings. The invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan lacked realistic follow up plans for the post military invasion. So those conflicts still remain unresolved. Also, the more serious threats of Iran and North Korea remain almost unsolvable due to the potential negative consequences of a military solution for those cases including the threat of North Korea dropping nuclear weapons on South Korea.
An excellent book and I highly recommend.
A decent overview.......2004-11-29
The book is an adequate overview of President Bush's foreign policy through the first three years of his office. But it does not do justice to the more intelectually challenging questions of the administration's foreign policy such as why exactly did America go to war in Iraq and what kind of role are the neo-conservatives playing in the administration.
A reasoned, balanced critique of Bush's foreign policy.......2004-09-19
Unlike the rather vitrioic and harsh rhetoric of the Bush-hating left, this book presents a fair yet reasoned critique of the Bush foreign policy. It rebuts the common assertion that Bush is an idiot or that he is being a tool by a neo-conservative cabal.
As the authors demonstrate in this book, the major problem with American foreign policy under this administration is the rigid adherance to notions that are demonstratively false. The Bush Administration seems to believe that offending allies carries no risk and that multilateral institutions such as the United Nations, are worthless in the international sphere.
This view is dangerous and in my view, demonstrative of the stunning arrogance of the Bush Administration.
Engaging and thought provoking presentation.......2004-04-15
While obviously opposed to the Bush approach to foreign policy in general and to Iraq in particular, Ivo Daalder and James Lindsay have nonetheless succeeded in producing a remarkably fair book attempting to explain the reasons behind the President's about face from recent U.S. foreign policy. The attacks on 9/11 and other terrorist activities over the past decade had gradually convinced the President that the internationalist view espoused by Bill Clinton and his own father was simply no longer the answer. Bush has chosen instead to embark on a new unilateralist course favored by most of his senior advisors that the authors argue may be somewhat productive in the short run but likely to be a disaster over the long haul. Extremely well written, thoughtful and meticulously documented, this book should be an essential read for any citizen seeking to get up to speed on foreign policy issues before the 2004 Presidential election.
