The lure of this book's promise starts with the assumption in its title. Possibility--that big, all-encompassing, wide-open-door concept--is an art? Well, who doesn't want to be a skilled artist, whether in the director's chair, the boardroom, on the factory floor, or even just in dealing with life's everyday situations? Becoming an artist, however, requires discipline, and what the authors of The Art of Possibility offer is a set of practices designed to "initiate a new approach to current conditions, based on uncommon assumptions about the nature of the world."

If that sounds a little too airy-fairy for you, don't be put off; this is no mere self-improvement book, with a wimpy mandate to transform its readers into "nicer" people. Instead, it's a collection of illustrations and advice that suggests a way to change your entire outlook on life and, in the process, open up a new realm of possibility. Consider, for example, the practice of "Giving an A," whether to yourself or to others. Not intended as a way to measure someone's performance against standards, this practice instead recognizes that "the player who looks least engaged may be the most committed member of the group," and speaks to their passion rather than their cynicism. It creates possibility in an interaction and does away with power disparities to unite a team in its efforts. Or consider "Being the Board," where instead of defining yourself as a playing piece, or even as the strategist, you see yourself as the framework for the entire game. In this scenario, assigning blame or gaining control becomes futile, while seeking to become an instrument for effective partnerships becomes possible.

Packed with such examples of personal and professional interactions, the book presents complex ideas on perception and recognition in a readable, useable style. The authors' combined, eclectic experience in music and painting (as well as family therapy and executive workshops) infuses their examples with vibrant color and sound. The relevance to corporate situations and relationships is well developed, and they don't rely on dry case studies to do it. Indeed, this book assumes the emotional intelligence and desire to engage of its reader, promising access to the rewards of that door-opening notion--possibility--in return. --S. Ketchum

Book Description

Presenting twelve breakthrough practices for bringing creativity into all human endeavors, The Art of Possibility is the dynamic product of an extraordinary partnership. The Art of Possibility combines Benjamin Zander's experience as conductor of the Boston Philharmonic and his talent as a teacher and communicator with psychotherapist Rosamund Stone Zander's genius for designing innovative paradigms for personal and professional fulfillment.

The authors' harmoniously interwoven perspectives provide a deep sense of the powerful role that the notion of possibility can play in every aspect of life. Through uplifting stories, parables, and personal anecdotes, the Zanders invite us to become passionate communicators, leaders, and performers whose lives radiate possibility into the world.

Download Description

The Art of Possibility offers a set of breakthrough practices for creativity in all human enterprises. This inspirational book is a synthesis of Rosamund Stone Zander's knowledge of cutting-edge psychology and Benjamin Zander's experiences as the conductor of the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra. Infused with the energy of their dynamic partnership, the book joins together Ben's extraordinary talent as a mover and shaker, teacher, and communicator with Rosamund's genius for creating innovative paradigms for personal and professional fulfillment. In lively counterpoint, the authors provide us with a deep sense of the powerful role that the notion of possibility can play in every aspect of our lives. The Zanders' deceptively simple practices are based on two premises: that life is composed as a story ("it's all invented") and that, with new definitions, much more is possible than people ordinarily think. The book shifts our perspective with uplifting stories, parables, and anecdotes. From "Giving an A" to the mysterious "Rule Number 6" to "Leading from Any Chair"--the account of Ben's stunning realization that the conductor/leader's power is directly linked to how much greatness he is willing to grant to others--each practice offers an opportunity for personal and organizational transformation.

5 out of 5 stars inspirational.......2007-09-28

This book continues to change my life. I loved their key phrases to remember their ideas. I suggested it to many of my teacher friends and people on our board of education - where money is so tight and so many cuts are being made -this book inspires you to the many possibilities you can create.

4 out of 5 stars Reshaping the "box".......2007-09-06

This book is thought provoking and stimulating. It is not an easy read, but definately gives you the tools to seek new ways of viewing almost any situation in a more positive light. I highly recommend this to anyone who is ready to not to merely think outside of the box, but reshape their box entirely.

5 out of 5 stars No change without leadership.......2007-08-27

There is no change without leadership at all levels. This book is a good introduction into the principles of transformational leadership. Creating Possibilities for others such that they are touched moved and inspired. The leadership theory is based on leading oneself not others and focuses on who you are being not what you are doing. This is not a book about manipulative Machiavellian techniques rather it's about creating free choice for others where they are inspired by the possibility you have created.

5 out of 5 stars A personal growth book for the nearly-jaded.......2007-08-16

I've been reading books for years now that are designed to inspire and lead one toward personal growth in relationships, in the workplace, in life in general. I'm a junkie for this kind of book, and therefore I've become somewhat jaded as well, never really expecting anything new but always hoping. What a delight, therefore, to be utterly surprised by THE ART OF POSSIBILITY. This book delivers! The Zanders' approach is revolutionary, shining real light amongst the plethora of jingoistic motivational books that abound these days. There is nothing self-centered or bumper stickerish or rah-rah cheerleady in this book. It has real depth, it never skims the surface or lets us off the hook. Benjamin is conductor of the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra. Rosamund is a painter and therapist. They bring their stunning creativity and imagination into real life -- their lives -- and show us how we, too, can compose and conduct our lives, paint our future. It's an exciting book, one that I've now read three times and underlined and highlighted and excerpted onto sticky notes for my computer and mirror and calendar. No wonder they are being called on to speak to leading business and professional groups.

5 out of 5 stars The Art of Possibility.......2007-07-10

I would recommend this book to anyone in a leadership position. It is not only inspiring, but practical. It offers insights into effective communication.

5 out of 5 stars Chalked Full...................2007-09-26

As a Druid High Priestess whom runs a large circle and runs PsychicSpellCaster.com, I can honestly tell you that this is full of very real information. Information that explains how the metaphysical is not really a mystical 'secret'- it is all explainable and can be used in a persons life to create a better life. The book can be heavy at times, but the format it is printed in really makes reading it easier (nice graphics, seperate paragraphs for covered subjects).
Over the years, many clients and students of mine have approached me with an array of metaphysical questions that can be explained by Quantum Physics (which is the underlined thread in this book). Therefore in my professional opinion, this is a must read.

1 out of 5 stars Misleading. Realistically this is a self-help book with no scientific connection........2007-08-11

This book/movie is good in that it at least briefly skimmed principles of quantum mechanics and probably provokes some optimistic thought in its readers. Unfortunately, they dragged the most precisely proven scientific theory out onto the self-help floor. I honestly don't see the connection between Heisenberg's uncertainty principle and learning to better control your life with your mind. Taken word for word these two things might mesh together, but really, this book/movie strips all science from quantum theory, turning it into a two hour message to learn how to think with your mind.

This book has no place citing quantum mechanics or anything remotely scientific. It might be useful if you want to stare at the ceiling and try to figure out how to guide your life with what you have behind your eyes. Go read something on philosophy if you want to discover something about thought that isn't purely scientific.

3 out of 5 stars A beautiful book, though not much new.......2007-07-31

I loved the film, despite having already researched most of the information in it. The movie had an awesome way of presenting the information and putting it into a visual form, so i was looking forward to the book.

I was immediately impressed with its looks and high quality finish. Reading it though was a little dull. I am perhaps overly critical as the information was hardly new, however for those new to the quantum physics world this is a great starter. I was hoping for some new insights that the film missed, but no such luck.

I love having it on my shelf, and it was worth reading, but the film was far better. Buy this with little expectation and you will be happy with your buy.

5 out of 5 stars Thought provoking.......2007-06-27

The chapter on the links between biochemistry and emotion makes the book worth buying. Knowing what is happening inside your body is the first step to controlling it.

I am not convinced that quantum physics is the reason that people can communicate beyond the ordinary five senses. None the less, I have refered back to the book several times and I do recommend it.

1 out of 5 stars The Movie was Flawed... the Book is Flawed........2007-06-19

The physics in this book is stretched into philosophies that can't possibly be derived from the data. The movie was just as flawed, only more confusing due to its pace and the little Flubber guy.

Book Description

Here, in a new edition, is Nelson Goodman's provocative philosophical classic--a book that, according to Science, "raised a storm of controversy" when it was first published in 1954, and one that remains on the front lines of philosophical debate. How is it that we feel confident in generalizing from experience in some ways but not in others? How ore generalizations that ore warranted to be distinguished from those that are not? Goodman shows that these questions resist formal solution and his demonstration has been taken by nativists like Chomsky and Fodor as proof that neither scientific induction nor ordinary learning can proceed without an a priori, or innate, ordering of hypotheses. In his new foreword to this edition, Hilary Putnam forcefully rejects these nativist claims. The controversy surrounding these unsolved problems is as relevant to the psychology of cognitive development as it is to the philosophy of science. No serious student of either discipline can afford to misunderstand Goodman's classic argument.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Simply brilliant!.......2003-07-14

Goodman starts out with an attempt to tackle the problem of interpreting counterfactuals ("What would happen if X would be the case instead of Y."). He doesn't solve the problem but gives some deep insights, especially on the connection between counterfactuals and scientific laws. In the next section he tries to tackle the problem by taking a look at a specific sort of counterfactuals, dispositional predicates. These are predicates like "flexibility" ("If I would bend this..."). He does tackle that problem. He doesn't use strange concepts like "possible worlds", that are more problematic than the original problem, but shows how dispositional predicates can be interpreted as statements about past observations, which reduces the problem to the good old problem of induction, which he adresses in the third section. He argues that Hume has solved the problem on how we can know that the future will behave like the past (we simply can't). The real question is not justifying induction but describing how it is done. Several people have attempted to do just that and Goodman discusses their work in some detail. He shows that there is a new, deeper problem: How can we separate theories about predicates ("All X are Y.") from these predicates. He constructs a strange predicate, grue, that is green until some future time t and blue afterwards. The theory "All emeralds are green." is as well supported as the theory "All emeralds are green." One can also construct "blue" and "green" from "bleen" and "grue", so the choice of predicates seems to be somewhat arbitrary. It is easy to construct similar predicates and noone has found a general way to rule them out yet. So how can we decide what predicates we should use in our theories? Goodman argues that this is pure convention, based on tradition. Not everyone will accept this answer (I don't), but this isn't necessary for seeing the brilliance of this work.

5 out of 5 stars A new look at the problem of induction.......2003-02-14

This book is clearly written and undeniably rigorous. In his first chapters, Goodman examines problems in counterfactual conditionals and sets up the problem of what he calls 'projectibility'. But, it is the chapter entitled "The New Riddle of Induction" where the book takes off. In this chapter, Goodman takes the reader through, first, the common misconceptions of the problem of induction. The way that Goodman perceives our inductive system is unique and refreshingly simplistic. (John Rawls later names Goodman's picture 'reflective equilibrium'.) Next, Goodman takes you through a journey of rule-finding for our inductive system; which includes examining Hempel's famous Raven's Paradox. Goodman ends the journey with discovering his own paradox, which he calls his 'Grue' argument. He demonstrates that predicates like 'grue' are the lingering problem with constructing a valid inductive system. In his last chapter, Goodman attempts to resolve the grue dilemma. It is in this chapter that we see the full philosophic mind of Goodman. The depth and relentless thought that Goodman puts into this chapter will forever 'entrench' his name in the philosophic discipline.

Book Description

Hats and head scarves are nowhere to be seen in these portraits of women who have lost their hair during treatment for cancer. Each picture, taken by a well-known photographer, captures bald women too intent on work or play to be bashful about their looks—among others, Melissa Etheridge belts out a Janis Joplin tune at the 2005 Grammys, a rodeo cowgirl poses with the cowboys, a surfer climbs a wave in Hawaii, and a nun scrutinizes her poker hand. A foreword and afterword by the author describe the genesis of the book, her own experience with cancer and hair loss, and the brave women who posed for pictures. Photo credits and profiles are provided for the photographers, who include Eddie Adams, Debbie Fleming Caffery, Reuben Cox, Rob Gauthier, Lauren Greenfield, David Hume Kennerly, Antonin Kratchovil, Harry Langdon, Gerd Ludwig, Jay Maisel, Catherine Opie, Harvey Stein, Nick Vedros, and Annie Wells.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Book.......2007-09-22

I highly recommend this inspirational book for anyone going through Chemotherapy. It is a book of women showing their bald heads and describing their experiences in short summaries. If you know anyone going through Chemo, buy it.

5 out of 5 stars Life Goes On..........2007-04-27

"Turning Heads" is a book that seems to provoke different emotions in all its readers. To me, it is a reminder that life goes on whatever is thrown your way. Their baldness is reminder of what the women in Hunsicker's book are dealing with, still they find ways to continue living their normal, or not so normal, lives.

3 out of 5 stars Beautiful People.......2007-03-26

I am so thrilled to be able to have this book in my home. The people it represents are so strong and couragious. I was glad to see that so many wonderful photographers took place in this cause. A nice coffee table book. My friends come over and they always are a bit sceptical in looking at the book, but once the first page is turned...they are intralled. I'm not sure why the picture was chosen for the cover page...I didn't enjoy this picture as much as many inside. Enjoy this book and all it stands for.

5 out of 5 stars Turning hearts while turning heads.......2007-01-16

How do you find the right words to comfort a loved one confronting the trauma of a cancer diagnosis? Unless you've been there, you can't. The stories of the women, both extraordinary and ordinary, in Turning Heads allowed me to offer solace, comfort, and humor to loved ones with words my own voice would fail to find. I have given this book to several people, and it has helped them in profound ways. Not only is this a work that turns the conventional idea of beauty on its head, it's a book that turns hearts -- from fear and despair to healing and hope. Buy it and give it to anyone you know confronting the fear and challenges of cancer. It's the best thing a friend can do.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and touching.......2007-01-09

I gave this book to a friend who was about to begin chemotherapy. She cried when she first looked at it, but now she leaves it on her coffee as a source of strength and inspiration. It helped everyone, including her, to deal with the overwhelming shock of the cancer and loss of hair. The pictures are amazing and the stories of the women reflect their courageousness and vulnerability at the same time.

    Product Description

Rumblings from a long dormant volcano provoke a crisis in the village of Smoldering Pines. Desperate to escape the flow of molten lava, the inhabitants meet to create a plan—and are soon at each other’s throats! But led by Milo, a group of neighbors discover a new way of talking and listening that taps fresh sources of creativity and unleashes the magic of collective thinking. While everyone knows how to engage in conversation, few of us practice the kind of meaningful dialogue that is crucial to leveraging an organization’s best thinking. Listening to the Volcano offers an engaging introduction to conversation as a disciplined workplace practice for sparking generative thinking, improving decision-making, and creating effective action. The fable features hilarious (and thought-provoking) plot lines and character illustrations and concludes with a group discussion guide to help you apply the ideas from the story to issues you face in your own organization.

Susan Miller's smooth and romantic writing delivers splendid descriptions of how astrology works. Her monthly web site, The Astrology Zone has always been spot on for me!

5 out of 5 stars A GREAT book to help you explore Astrology..........2002-04-07

Susan Miller has a devoted fan. I have been so excited to turn each page and discover the history and advances this ancient science has given us. The writing is clear and interesting. The introduction brings the reader to a more personal level with the author. I felt like I was sitting with her and she was sharing information with me; a new friend. I highly recommend this book to anyone searching for a book to gain a clearer understanding of Astrology and how it pertains to you.

    4 out of 5 stars Beginner's Astrology 101.......2002-02-05

In search of a good beginner's book? Here you have it. It is simple and basic and not too complex. Though I must admit, I really liked her break down of science vs. astrology for each of the planets. That was a unique and interesting touch not many astrology books look at. I was hoping for more, much much more, especially after viewing the credentials of the author. But the book is seriously lacking for the advanced or even intermediate level astrologer seeking a good read.

    5 out of 5 stars She's simple the best!.......2002-01-18

The cientific side of my personality makes me wonder, everyday, why do I believe in astrology?!?!

Because of Susan Miller, I admit!

I was supposed to have quit astrology years ago, when I thought nobody could make me believe in stars influences anymore, then I met Susan.

She appeared to me in 1996, with the internet, and since them I can't live without her montly forecast (posted every month by astrologyzone.com).

Her book brings all the nice ideas and concepts about astrology she presents on her site forecasts and newsletter. It also shows a lot about the sensitive and giving person Susan is. Her book is a lot like her.

While I have Susan around, I'll remain a server of astrology logic!

This book can make you feel better about anything. Kind of unusual as it goes A to Z a dictionary of Affluence. You may think of this book as a friend that you can always trust for support!

    5 out of 5 stars I Won't Live Without This Tape!.......2003-03-09

I can't begin to do justice to this remarkable tape by Dr. Chopra. His words and philosophy have enriched my life in both subtle and profound ways. A short while after I began to listen to this tape, my life began to offer me wealth & opportunities that simply came my way, without any effort and this flow of wealth & opportunities has continued throughout the five years I have had this tape in my possession. The real beauty of this tape is that you need only to listen to it, (which I do every day in my car), and the wealth and affluence, that according to Dr. Chopra are what the Universe(GOD)wants for us, begin to make a presence in your life without any special effort on your part. So BUY THIS TAPE, (I have the book too, but it really is better if you can listen to the tape every day). Just listen every day and your life will change in fabulous ways, I guarantee it!

    5 out of 5 stars I'm A Believer!.......2002-11-16

I love this tape! It's very grounding and I never tire of listening to Dr. Chopra. I had been in a situation where I had tried for over 6 weeks to land a new job. After going on countless interviews and being told "we will be in contact" then never hearing back, I felt the interview I went to on 11/8 would be much of the same. On 11/9 I went to the library and came across the audio cassette. I listened to it daily, just enjoying Dr. Chopra's insites and his reading of the A to Z list. On 11/12 I had 5 messages on my machine responding to my resume, including the interviewer from 11/8 wanting a second interview. On 11/13 I went for the second interview and was hired on the spot. I would be making more money and have more independence than my previous position! And I could feel a distint, yet subtle shift in my perceptions of the world and I could just feel happiness and the Zest for life he mentions. I highly recommend. In fact, I am going to place an order right now for my own copy of this wonderful tape!

5 out of 5 stars Read It Over and Over... It's That Good!.......2002-10-28

This book although very short, should be required reading! From "abundance" to "zest", it covers just about everything required to lead a content, happy, productive and profitable life. I have owned this book for about 8 years and have re-read it many, many times.

The introduction sets the whole tone of the book by stating "there is power in knowledge, desire and spirit, and this power within you is the key to creating affluence". We realize quickly that it is our inborn nature to be abundant... to be affluent. By desiring something, stating our intention, then letting go of our attachment to it, we can recieve all that we desire from life, wether in money, love, position or anything else we may seek.

The first part of the book discusses quantum reality and how we and everything else in our world are all made of the same "stuff", which is primarily energy... or "non-stuff". What makes one thing different from another is the arrangement and quantity of these impules of energy and information.

Part one of the book gives one or two simple ideas under each letter of the alphabet that are short, sweet and very much to the point. Beacuse it is in such an easy to read and brief format, this is the kind of book you will want (and the author suggests you do) read over and over again. Depending on where you are with your life at any given moment, you will pull something more out of it with each reading.

Part two of the book discusses our similarities to the unified field. It discusses the 25 charachteristics of the field and how these are also the characteristics of "Brahman, the source of all creation, as described in the Veda, the classic spiritual text of India". This part, although intersting, was not as good as part one, but overall I still have to rate this book as one of the best I have ever read!

This book will only take an hour or two to read but the messages it sends are timeless... read it again and again so you don't miss a word! It's fantastic!

    5 out of 5 stars ABUNDANCE.......2002-06-19

I read "The Seven Spiritual Laws", which perked my interest in this book. I liked this book. It had the A - Z points for affluence and abundance. Plus a terrific list of ideas/words to meditate on in order to bring your mind into balance with your desires. Practical guidlines for persons not used to meditation. And additional scientific information on how the principle of affluence works. How can one go wrong?

      Book Description

This volume brings together specially written essays by leading researchers on the propositional imagination. This is the mental capacity we exploit when we imagine that Holmes has a bad habit or that there are zombies. It plays an essential role in philosophical theorizing, engaging with
fiction, and indeed in everyday life. The Architecture of the Imagination capitalizes on recent attempts to give a cognitive account of this capacity, extending the theoretical picture and exploring the philosophical implications.

      Book Description

Never have there been so many spiritual seekers and so much readily available information about paths to self-fulfillment. Yet this book is the first in-depth exploration of how to evaluate spiritual teachers, what to expect from them, and what to be wary of, as well as whether it is necessary to study and practice with a guru or possible to achieve the same thing on your own.

John Kain introduces us to teachers (and their students) from a wide range of traditions:

Murat Yagan, a ninety-year-old Circassian teacher of Sufism and Kebzeh in a rural community in British Columbia; Chief Arvol Looking Horse, the nineteenth-generation keeper of the sacred White Buffalo Calf Pipe of the Lakota, Dakota, Nakota Nation; Joan Chittister, OSB, a sister at a Benedictine monastery in Erie, Pennsylvania, an ardent advocate for peace and justice, a feminist, and a questioner of institutional thinking; Reb Zalman Schachter-Shalomi, founder of the Jewish Renewal movement, enthusiastic teacher of Hasidism, and past holder of the World Wisdom chair at Naropa University in Boulder, Colorado; Gehlek Rimpoche, a renegade but beloved Tibetan Buddhist teacher whose aim is to dispense with superficial traditions and integrate the essence of Buddhist teaching into Western culture; Sudha Puri, the American-born head of Ananda Ashram north of Los Angeles and the Vedanta Centre in Massachusetts, in the lineage of the Indian sage Ramakrishna; John Daido Loori, the abbot of Zen Mountain Monastery in New York’s Catskill Mountains, who is known for using photography and the arts as bridges to awareness; and Adyashanti, a charismatic American teacher in Los Gatos, California, who has broken away from all established traditions.

Woven throughout Kain’s detailed profiles of the teachers themselves is information on finding a teacher, life in a spiritual community, dealing with problems like disillusionment and abuse of power, and the meeting (or lack thereof) between Western psychology and religion.

A teacher's job is not actually to give us anything but to take away the unnecessary baggage we accumulate in our minds that obscures the truth. It is a rare and precious thing to work with someone whose purpose is to cajole us into opening our eyes and experiencing a saner reality. Kain offers would-be pilgrims an inside look at this relationship and what extraordinary things can result from it.

5 out of 5 stars The Sophisticated Seeker.......2007-03-15

American spiritual experience has often been characterized as the activity of a small group of religious institutions. Wisdom is transmitted from a deity or inspiring source through a legitimized teacher to the practitioners. Adherents rely on group contact for defining and orchestrating valid experience. The institution provides the moral leadership and direction that the practitioners feel unable to foster without direct guidance. Since the 1950s, the number of legitimate spiritual traditions outside this small group has mushroomed. A large segment arrived from Asia and a smaller sliver emerged from the practices of indigenous peoples in this hemisphere. For the most part, practitioners were drawn to these new sources of inspiration because they represented an opportunity to tap into spirituality stripped of institutional calcification. Across three generations, practitioners have used their own judgment to accept what was meaningful, reject what was unusable and create a lived response on their own terms. John Kain, the author of "A Rare and Precious Thing", is clearly a practitioner of the latter group, a sophisticated seeker. He gives us a very readable reaction to his own spiritual journey by examining alternate disciplines through the words of their teachers and students.

To begin with, Mr. Kain explores each of their settings. His descriptive tone is casual in an engaging way when telling us where and how the teacher lives and the type of community that has formed around them. A serious amount of research is incorporated in these pieces- a kernel of history describes each tradition and a bibliography gives a selection of the teacher's writings for each chapter. Mr. Kain's strength is in bringing out the style of the teacher through transparent interviews. Some teachers are best heard as proponents of a particular set of principles or ideas; others are convincing when they relax and tell stories about their own awakenings. By acting as the intelligent listener, the author finds the tone of the tradition and delineates how this thread of spirituality creates a religious community. To tell the other side of the history, he also interviews key students. Most of these individuals have interacted with the teacher in profound ways, validating the quality of the teachings and revealing how personal interaction with the teacher is often the root of faith. The words of these students set religious ideas into a real time and place and their appreciations and frustrations help to define not only what is intended but what is commonly experienced as well.

Between the interviews, Mr. Kain has written short pieces to explore religious ideas that appear dear to his own heart. These chapters are divided into two groups; the Possibilities - gratitude, a balanced appreciation of the ego, and 'turning' (profoundly moving) words and the Pitfalls - disillusionment, drawing the boundaries and leaving the teacher. Substantiated by additional quotes from his sources, recent religious history and his own experiences, the author suggests that the intuitive basis of any practice should be some form of common sense. In this case, common sense means examining your own actions and the actions of others in a fair and intelligent light, means taking responsibility for your own actions and conclusions, and means recognizing the use of disappointment for spiritual growth. From my perspective, this is the 'second heart' of the book. Having traveled so far, and having run across an abundance of truth-sayers and truth-seekers, we must appreciate our spiritual adventures with the same intelligence that we use to examine our everyday lives. Any deep inquiry into our lives will involve negative as well as positive elements; in fact, it must include all of these elements if it is to truly represent our experience. Disheartening experiences are merely another way that our heart gets involved. Knowing this can guide us in choosing growth opportunities as we shift the responsibilities of our lives from others onto our own shoulders. This is not a rejection of institution guidance but an acceptance of our own power.

Tradition is the passing down of culture from generation to generation. Mr. Kain's work, as important as it is in describing the student-teacher relationship, is equally important as a moment in religious history. This is a snapshot of the transmission process, that is, the transmission of religious culture. The future of these traditions is unknown, but it is clear that we are listening to history as it unfolds. For that we have to thank our seasoned guide.

      5 out of 5 stars A Good Read.......2007-01-27

A Rare and Precious Thing is an important book for uncertain times. John Kain addresses universal truths, the necessity of independent thinking, and the struggle of authentic self-exploration through personal insight as well as candid profiles of the somewhat accidental - and very human - leaders of eight spiritual disciplines. John's writing is solid; his poetry background shines through in this lyrical, thoughtful book. I found myself increasingly uplifted and engaged with each chapter. A Rare and Precious Thing is a still and quiet place amidst the hype of today's trendy, instant spirituality.

5 out of 5 stars Truly, A Rare and Precious Thing.......2006-11-22

John Kain's A Rare and Precious Thing is a book which is astonishingly accurately named, for, indeed, it is. Kain introduces eight teachers from different spiritual disciplines, including an adept in Ahmsta Kezbeh (which is some sect of Sufisim); the bearer of the sacred bundle of the Lakota, Dakota, Nakota Nation; a Benedictine abbess; a rabbi; a Buddhist monk; a Hindu Vedanta reverend mother; a Zen abbot; and a Zen renegade (if that's possible).

Kain introduces a bike-riding Zen dude called Adyashanti, whose picture reminds me pleasantly of a thirty-something Charlie Brown. His words are even more pleasant: "I don't want to be in the role of `wisdom guy' all the time. . . . I mean, who wants to sit around talking about the Truth for any longer than is absolutely necessary?" I heard that, and I've lost count of the times I've wished somebody would say it. Now, somebody has, and Adya (as he is known affectionately to his friends) has other stirring things to say. My favorite: "Most spirituality is a construction project," he says, "But enlightenment is a demolition project." I like this guy's approach to teaching. Step one: stay out of your own way.

Chief Arvol Looking Horse is the nineteenth-generation keeper of the sacred bundle, and for a guy with so much responsibility, he seems circumspect and thoughtful, unlike so many charged with such duties. The chief finds himself in a difficult position. Pledged to protect his religion, he cannot profit from ceremonies related to it nor can he live off the reservation. As a result, he finds his income limited, and unfortunately, like truly religious people anywhere, he finds that the poverty his office requires is not eased by the people who benefit most. He has a sense of humor, however, and that seems to sustain him: on his mission of peace to South Africa, government officials refused to allow him to leave the airport without an armed guard. As part of his sacred office, he cannot be around guns, and he refused. The officials insisted, so Arvol responded, "All right, let them have their guns but take the bullets out." His confidence and creativity is enough to endear him to anyone.

Sister Joan Chittister is a Benedictine with a radical streak as wide as thirty books and as profound as a stream of ink. I found her thoughts provocative: ""I really think that religion at its best is when it moves us beyond religion. We do make a God out of religion, but the function of religion is to move us beyond itself." I found her spiritual questions intriguing, and I'd like to e-mail them to every one of the self-selected godly: "If we're still in a state of ongoing creation, what are we helping to create?" Try that one on, Oral. And if you are interested in the knots religion can set in your shoelaces, you should read this book just to find out why Chittister likes to tell the old Hindu story "about the master who tied up his cat during prayer time." Good stuff.

For me, this book was as bracing as a dive into a Sierra stream, eye-opening and moment-inducing. I enjoyed the clear vision of the teachers looking at themselves, their pursuits, and their students, which was so ably conveyed by the author, and I recommend these pages to anyone who needs to step up or step back from a spiritual pursuit, for whatever reasons, real, imagined, or fabricated. If you want to follow up, the book also includes a reading list of the works of the teachers Kain interviewed.

5 out of 5 stars A Rare and Precious Thing.......2006-11-04

John Kain's thoughtful and sensitive writing speaks to much more than working with a spiritual teacher. The candid and often intimate conversations tell us of the common messages inherent in all spiritual practices. There is a circular thread in this book which leads the reader inside these relationships; allowing us to see the human-ness in both the students and teachers. A Rare and Precious Thing is about ALL relationships and how we might be wise to embrace them.

5 out of 5 stars Crossing paths with eight remarkable spiritual teachers .......2006-09-30

John Kain approaches each teacher and spiritual practice with a genuine warmth and respect that creates an immediate connection with the reader. Neither the author nor the teachers ever speak from some removed, condescending pinnacle of spirituality--quite the opposite--the engaging personalities, exuding a great mix of humility and humor, are introduced in a way that makes you wish to share a meal and conversation with any one of them. Their down-to-earth openness offers many surprises, too, as they alternately support, nudge, sometimes even provoke their students toward higher levels of self-reliant spirituality. These are remarkable individuals, all, with tremendous insight to share about spiritual growth. The book therefore offers something precious not only to individuals who have or are seeking a teacher within a specific spiritual practice; it speaks just as directly to those of us who are living everyday lives without the benefit of a formal teacher, but who value spending time with wise souls wherever we encounter them. The sincerity of the spiritual search, and of the questions raised by the teachers and students alike, satisfies.
