Kimball Fisher and Mareen Duncan Fisher document the special skills needed for the new but increasingly common task of managing far-flung work groups. The approaches that they examine are becoming increasingly essential for all managers. Although they explore relevant technologies carefully, their human relations advice is probably more important. The Fishers emphasize the interpersonal and leadership skills that a manager needs to head a virtual team. If you read this book cover to cover, it can seem repetitive, since many of the rules and tips offered in one area overlap with those in other areas. However, the book is designed to allow you to review specific management challenges and technologies, and to ignore areas that are irrelevant to your situation. We [...] recommend this clear, practical work to anyone who leads virtual teams and to the telecommuters and freelance workers who report to them.

This book presents a new approach to managing people from distance. It also gives clear examples and cases. This book is a must for managers who control their team from distance, either nationwide or global-wide.

4 out of 5 stars Practical guide to eLearning.......2007-01-15

I purchased this book as I was beginning to design an eLearning curriculum for my company. The book was a great jumpstart to helping me structure the program, consider ways to involve the learners in eLearning, and remember to find ways to make the course material memorable. I found the accompanying online and CD-based demos to be good stimulators, too. Although I won't be using an authoring tool like the one Michael Allen invented, it was easy to take and apply several of Allen's ideas to my project.

5 out of 5 stars Emphasizing the essentials.......2003-11-28

This book takes e-learning to its core mandate, that of engaging and involving the learners, so that they learn the key skills and knowledge required.

An excellent and easy read, with lots of good examples and non-examples, nicely compared side by side.

5 out of 5 stars Must have for new designers.......2003-05-01

This book is a must have for the aspiring e-Learning developer. It reviews enough theory to make the point and directs the reader quickly through the logic and science of good e-Learning design.

5 out of 5 stars This book directly applies to your work!.......2003-03-04

Dr. Allen is a champion of learner-centric design - and has written a refreshingly reader-centric book about the topic. He understands that learning is an "internal, personal, and ultimately individual act." His words reveal his passions and opinions in such an authentic manner that you can quickly understand his perspective, and extract points of meaning that can directly apply to your work. As a producer and designer of interactive media, I continually find his insights an inspiration.

5 out of 5 stars Guidance from the Master.......2003-01-28

This book is subtitled, "Building Interactive, Fun and Effective Learning Programs for Any Company" and I think that says it all. I've spoken on the topic of where's the fun in eLearning and know that most of what I've seen is "deadly boring."

I have known Mike Allen since I worked for Authorware in the 1980's. One of the things I always regretted was not working in the MN office, as he, along with the rest of the Authorware team, conducted critiques of the work in progress being developed for customers. The few I did attend were always insightful and thought provoking. Along with being pretty scary if your work was on the agenda, because you might have to listen to bad along with good feedback. Mike Allen is a kind person, but not one to mince words when it comes to what makes up good and bad eLearning. I've also had the opportunity to attend several lectures by Mike on eLearning.

This book shares his insight on what makes good elearning, particularly from the viewpoints of motivation and interactivity. I am starting a new project with a lot of possible impact and reading his book has helped me immensely. Also, it contains several little history lessons on eLearning and Authorware that I really enjoyed. Lots of examples of good projects are discussed and included on a CD-ROM that unfortunately is not included in the book, but available for free from his website. If you are really interested in learning more on what makes good eLearning, I would definitely order it soon.

5 out of 5 stars You will keep returning to this step-by-step guide..........2007-09-19

I purchased this entertaining and well-written book a couple of years ago. It has served as a step-by-step guide as I have made the transition from the traditional classroom to online learning.

From basic learning principals and definitions to specific "how to" examples and checklists, this book has it all and delivers it with a sense of humor that will have you chuckling aloud and keep you engaged, interested, and wanting to learn more. I continue to use this book as a resource, returning to it again and again, whether in need of a reminder or looking for inspiration to help me move forward.

If you are considering making the journey to online learning, this book will provide the light to help you along your way.

4 out of 5 stars A good rosetta stone for HR/training and web-geeks........2004-07-26

In 150 pages, the authors lay out the key information both HR/training practitioners and web-geeks need to work together successfully.

Written for the non-technical HR practitioner who needs to understand both the training concepts and the technology choices she will be faced with, this book also provides a technical reader (me) with the language and central concepts used by training professionals to develop their courses.

I could see this text being used as the starting point for an project team comprised of HR professionals, trainers, and web designers to build on -- each member of the team required to read it to establish a common framework and language. A few hours spent reading this up front would save countless hours of 'churn' later on in the project.

5 out of 5 stars E-learning for Dummies?.......2004-06-22

The audience for this book is the person who wants to take their first step into traditional online learning. And by traditional, I mean self-contained courses and the management systems that support them (as opposed to deeper simulations or integration with knowledge management or ERP or CRM systems, etc., etc.,) For these people, the tone, the content, and the sympathy are dead on. Before going to a conference, or reading any deeper books, or subscribing to any of the current magazines, or meeting with your boss or advisor, this should be required reading.

5 out of 5 stars Not Just for Beginners.......2004-06-01

Like many instructional design professionals, I struggle to stay abreast of the lighting-fast developments in online learning. Replacing the comfortable and relatively stable vocabularies and design considerations of yesteryear are rapidly evolving media, terms, technologies, and standards.

Both veterans and novices alike may now know a great deal about some things and very little about others. We need resources that can help us fill the gaps in our understanding and enable us to speak intelligently to our clients, colleagues, and employers. We also need simplified ways of explaining these topics to our audiences.

Patti and Amy have provided just such a resource. By peeling away the jargon and complexity in an even-handed and measured way, they have clarified many mind-numbing subjects. Along the way, they have taken care to point out universal considerations, such as the importance of designing for usability and building training around real-world challenges. They have also provided excellent checklists to use when considering the acquisition of expensive technologies, such as learning management and content management systems. These tools alone can help organizations avoid costly and frustrating blunders.

Patti and Amy have successfully blended sensible guidance; classic learning theories; online learning terms, definitions, and applications; and many excellent resources into a "must read" book and companion Web site. Readers will hardly realize the plane has left the ground by the time they touch down gently but firmly at the end of a smooth and delightful journey.

5 out of 5 stars Current, fun, and accurate.......2004-05-25

Very few of us have the time or the patience to read a non-fiction book front to back. We want current information, solutions to the problems we are experiencing today, and answers to questions we can not answer ourselves. We want to find these golden nuggets of information quickly and easily and, we do not want a lot of theoretical or academic fluff.

"Making Sense of Online Learning" meets those requirements. The Shank and Sitze book and companion website are perfect "just-in-time" resources for anyone involved in online learning. Whatever your level of experience and expertise with online learning, I am sure you will find lots of useful and insightful information in the book and the website. While I have designed, developed, and taught various online courses, I still found the book and the website valuable. I know it will help me, my clients, and my students. Thanks, Patti and Amy!

There are distinct sets of standards in the e-learning, or online classroom, environment that enable all components of a learning system to communicate with each other. However, choosing which set of standards would best suit the system's needs, then understanding and following those specifications can be a daunting task. In E-Learning Standards: A Guide to Purchasing Developing and Deploying Standards-Conformant E-Learning, the developers of the first learning management system to be AICC-certified for Web-based learning provide the first road map to this complex topic. 4 out of 5 stars Training Development is a Snap!.......2000-03-01

I ordered this book because I couldn't get our I/T (Information Technology) department to adopt a regular training methodology, such as Dick & Carey. It seems like most I/T staff, and I/T trainers in particular, wanted an approach to developing training that was specifically aimed at I/T. This book really helped. It covers most of the issues I faced in convincing our I/T staff to set up a formal I/T training program, and even got the HR and OE/OD folks to come along. The chapters are sequenced well, the content is easy to read, and the forms and checklists are a HUGE time saver! Even if you know how to develop training, this book can save you time, money, and maybe some blood pressure medication!

        Book Description

Instant Messaging (IM) is quickly rivaling e-mail as the electronic communications tool of choice in offices worldwide. Already used by over 100 million people globally, IM will be used more often than e-mail by 2005. Employees at 70% of U.S. companies are expected to use IM this year -- whether for legitimate business reasons or for personal purposes. But while business and personal interest in IM is exploding, the potential for problems is growing just as fast.

Instant Messaging Rules addresses the potentially costly legal, regulatory, productivity, security, training, and management challenges that IM brings to the workplace. Complete with sample policies, this timely guide offers workable solutions for establishing and enforcing rules and policies that will let any company maximize the business potential of IM technology. A best practices toolkit for workplace IM usage, Instant Messaging Rules will help employers keep their organizations out of harm's way, while giving employees access to a cutting-edge, productivity-enhancing tool.

3 out of 5 stars More of the Same From This Author.......2005-07-27

Previously, I have reviewed "The ePolicy Handbook: Designing and Implementing Effective E-Mail, Internet and Software Policies" and "E-Mail Rules - A Business Guide to Managing Policies, Security, and Legal Issues for E-Mail and Digital Communication", the first two books in a "trilogy" by Nancy Flynn of the ePolicy Institute. As I have mentioned in recent presentations on developing effective information technology policies, it is not realistic or recommended to adopt policies without taking a holistic view of the vulnerabilities, threats, and risk appetite of the organization.

From this viewpoint, Flynn's third book in the series, "Instant Messaging Rules - A Business Guide to Managing Policies, Security, and Legal Issues for Safe IM Communication" (210 Pages, The American Management Association, 2004, ISBN 0814472532), offers little more than a rehash of what has been written in the first two titles. However, this does not mean the book is totally without merit and should not be read.

The book borders on redundancy with the first two books with its discussions of threats and vulnerabilities, how to conduct risk assessments, etc. So we can skip any discussion of these topics. What the book excels in is making clear that Instant Messaging, while being a different, "newish" form of communication, is widely misunderstood in terms of the heightened levels of threats and vulnerabilities brought about because of its use. It is this misunderstanding that has many organizations not really realizing that their employees may be using public instant messaging networks at work, or that they are not treating instant messaging logs as possible business records.

So even if you have read one or both of the earlier titles, this one is worth picking up to complete the library. I am sure she will soon have a title on blogs and content will again be redundant, but sometimes this is what it takes to get a point across. And for once, the author has left of the appendix pushing her business and the business of her colleagues. Unfortunately, the only tiles under recommended reading are the books she has written. C'est la vie.

2 out of 5 stars Timely, but thin on content.......2004-07-24

This book is very timely given the growth of IM in the workplace. However, I found that it is very wordy, with minimal content. Could have been condensed into a short article. On the other hand, if you are new to IM or security, the book will be a good introduction.

        4 out of 5 stars Still Pertinent?.......2004-04-24

As it was written near 2000, a chapter or two suffer from obsolescence already, but the excellence of the rest of the content make it very forgivable.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for IT Managers!.......2002-01-20

As the MIS Director for a large educational institution, I have felt the impacts, first-hand, of recruiting and retaining top IT professionals in a tight job market. Yet there is clearly a methodical approach that can be followed to target the "right" employees and, once hired, ensure that they remain happy and content within your organization.

This book does an excellent job of outlining that process in a simple, easy-to-follow, step-by-step approach. The author not only covers all aspects of the hiring process but also reminds us of best practices that we too often (and too easily) forget to ensure success once we bring top players on board.

This book was pertinent and informative. I intend to pass it around to all of the managers on my staff.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent guide for High Tech Executives and HR.......2002-01-19

Adamsky has produced a superb guide to the Hiring Process that is of great interest to Executives, Recruiters and Job seekers alike. The book is applicable to a wide range of industries well beyond the IT industry.

The book provides a great deal of actionable ideas that you can put into place now to improve your hiring practices, land the best candidates, and keep them as satisfied productive employees. Similarly, the book helps potential applicants better understand the hiring process and get inside the mind of hiring managers. It also contains a plethora of valuable and interesting ideas and commentary on the HR landscape. Truly an enjoyable and informative read !

        5 out of 5 stars A Pleasant Surprise!.......2001-12-18

I didn't actually buy this book but won it as a door prize at an industry trade show. I tossed it in my briefcase and didn't give it much thought to it until I was stuck in an airport on my return trip home. Although I don't hire a great number of "information technologists", the book was filled with excellent advice for any manager. His advice applies to the dynamics of locating, interviewing, hiring and retaining exceptional individuals. I like to underline when I read, and when I finished the book I realized I had underlined just about everything! Don't let the title throw you off because this is an excellent resource that truly cuts across all industries. He has his hand on the pulse of human nature, and an incredible insight into those people who understand how (technically) the world works.

I have already given a copy to a friend that owns a small company and has found it a challenge to find and retain good people. If my friend follows the program outlined in the book I am sure he will see the results. One thing I really liked about Adamsky's writing style is that it's light on philosophy and academic drivel and packed solid with the experiences of someone who has obviously been in the trenches.

5 out of 5 stars A boon to job seekers and providers alike.......2001-12-04

I feel better prepared to operate in today's challenging job market after reading this book.

As an IT professional I have had occasion to be on both sides of the interview desk. This book clarified and reinforced many of the beliefs that I formed from these experiences. However, I derived an even greater benefit from those sections that challenged my preconceptions. Mr. Adamsky's use of logic, examples, and self-deprecating humor helped me to see things from a different viewpoint. I am confident that a company can only benefit from the encorporation of his strategies.
