Customer Reviews:
The best treatment planner for school counselors........2007-07-22
As a school counselor/therapist, I find that this planner bridges the divide between school counseling and psychotherapy. It is much more useful in a school setting than the Adolescent Treatment Planner as it is organized by presenting problem rather than DSM diagnosis (e.g. attention-seeking behavior, self-esteem building, sexual responsibility). However,DSM diagnostic suggestions are also included for each presenting problem. Treatment goals and interventions are clearly outlined and practical. Yes, some interventions are obvious, but there are dozens of additional interventions as well. In a school setting where time is limited, this book helps me quickly outline my treatment plan and stay focused so that I am working in a more efficient manner. This book has saved me a lot of time and helped me conceptualize school-based therapy in a more practical way.
Very Helpful.......2007-01-04
This book has been very helpful in coming up with treatment plans for the variety of issues that walk through my door. I don't have the companion of the homework but I think that might be helpful as well.
Some of this stuff just seems so obvious.......2005-11-01
I am a school social worker. I don't use this book very often at all. Maybe that is b/c I don't really "write school treatment plans" for my job. Does anyone? I don't know---it just doesn't seem like most public schools, at least--have specific treatment plans.
The book is quite repetitious and some of the recommendations are just ..well, obvious to me. I prefer the homework planner for the School SW and Counseler. It is more worth the purchase than this book
Ridiculous punctuation/editing errors.......2005-10-25
Did anyone notice how the things reccommended repeat constantly, have the same activity 4 times in the same section, and the fact that the nuumbers are totally out of order?
For example: 1. Plan an activity, 2. discuss feelings, 3.brainstorm supportive people, 2. Discuss feelings, 7.Administer an inventory, 3. Brainstorm with supportive people, 1.Discuss feelings, 19.Go over sheet with student, 7. Administer an inventory.
Everything is out of order and repeated several times. It was so obvious that it made me wonder if anyone edited this book and question the entire book's integrity.
The writers should try and clear up such discrepancies, ecspecially in a 45$ book.
Review.......2005-09-27
This book does an excellent job of presenting the information in easy to use sections. Why reinvent the wheel, I find it a great help.

Book Description
The Handbook of Conflict Resolution, Second Edition is written for both the seasoned professional and the student who wants to deepen their understanding of the processes involved in conflicts and their knowledge of how to manage them constructively. It provides the theoretical underpinnings that throw light on the fundamental social psychological processes involved in understanding and managing conflicts at all levels—interpersonal, intergroup, organizational, and international. The Handbook covers a broad range of topics including information on cooperation and competition, justice, trust development and repair, resolving intractable conflict, and working with culture and conflict. Comprehensive in scope, this new edition includes chapters that deal with language, emotion, gender, and personal implicit theories as they relate to conflict.
Customer Reviews:
Great Jumping-Off Point.......2007-09-21
As stated before, this is a text book. It is at times a bit dry, but unfortunately that is what happens when you try to fit such an enormous amount of useful info into one book.
Most of the chapters are written by different authors, so for someone attempting to read this book cover-to-cover it can be a bit difficult to follow the different writing styles and rhythms. However, each chapter has a wealth of information useful to everyone from the student just beginning to break into the study of conflict to the seasoned veteran of the field.
Apart from course requirements, I use this book mainly to give myself a broad overview of a topic, as a reference for what research has been done, and to point me in the right direction to investigate each topic on my own. As I said above, this is an enormous amount of information to fit into one book (even if it is 600+ pages) so many chapters offer reading suggestions for further elaboration on specific aspects of the main topic. That to me is the main appeal and true value of this text- on all the wide-ranging topics in Conflict Resolution and Alternative Dispute Resolution, here in one book I can find the key to direct me for further study.
Classic for training in Conflict Management.......2007-04-11
The second edition is an outstanding handbook for learning how to manage and resolve conflict, especially for professionals who find themselves faced with and/or engaged in conflict at any level. The first edition became a classic, the second edition secured that position for years to come. I use this text to teach senior executives and aspiring leaders. I've found no better handbook for taking doctoral students from 'learners' of conflict resolution theory to successful and confident 'practitioners.'
Its a handbook not a novel.......2006-11-16
It is a handbook and not a novel. It's not supposed to function as a page-turner, but it is a book that is pregnant with meaning. I find the information in here very useful not only from a research point of view, but for anyone who is ever faced with conflict situations at work or even outside of work. It gives you the bottom line on the effects of constructive conflict resolution and a whole lot more. If only the present Administration would stumble upon a copy and read what it has to say, we might find ourselves in a much better position.
An Extraordinary Resource.......2006-11-04
As someone who is interested in the field of Conflict Resolution, I found the book to be extremely helpful. The book is very comprehensive, and it covers various topics that are most relevant to both theorists and practitioners. Among the topics covered in the handbook: interpersonal and intergroup processes, intrapsychic processes, creativity and change, culture and conflict, models of practice, and many others.
The three authors Morton Deutsch, Peter T. Coleman and Eric C. Marcus present the 37 chapters of the handbook in a well organized way and succeed in articulating some of the most pertinent aspects of the field. I highly recommend this book.
Terribly written usefull information.......2006-01-31
Usefull information is the only + point I can give you after studying this handbook as a course requirement. I do not know what the writer is thinking or who he thinks he is talking too. If you are lucky you can concentrate enough for one page at the time, shame there are as much as 600 pages....

The Mediator's Handbook provides a time-tested, flexible model for effective mediation in diverse environments and situations. Completely revised, this new, expanded edition provides a clear overview of mediation and conflict; a large "Toolbox" section that details the skills and approaches used by professional mediators; and a final section that looks at informal mediation. A valuable resource for all working in corporations, government agencies, community organizations and schools.
Customer Reviews:
Great Introductory Text.......2007-06-25
This was used as a course textbook in an introductory ADR class, and I think it serves that purpose well. A great book for those new to ADR and mediation that clearly outlines the purpose and procedures of mediation. This text does not really discuss the psychological motivations behind party behavior except for briefly touching on cultural patterns. The focus is on the process.
The topics are dealt with step-by-step, and while the illustrations aren't necessary, especially for university-level courses or professionals, this is still a great textbook that adequately covers the role of the mediator and all the steps in mediation as well as tips for how to move the process along and recognize problems.
A Welcome Addition to My Library.......2002-02-04
I am a mediator, arbitrator, and trainer. The Mediator's Handbook is a welcome addition to my library. It is filled with practical advice,theoretical information, wonderful charts, and the nuts and bolts of mediation. I am sure every mediator, new or experienced, will benefit from this book. I recommend that every mediator skim the "Mediator's Handbook" as well as "Basic Skills for the New Mediator" by Allan H. Goodman (which I purchased at the same time) before every mediation.
God is in the details, and vice versa.......2001-09-04
Alternative dispute resolution (ADR) has received lots of attention over the last decade or so, and I'd like it to receive more. Here's a good place to start.
As an [ahem] older law student, I recently signed up to participate in a mediation program through a local courthouse. As I looked around for helpful references, my eye fell naturally on this modern classic by Jennifer Beer. Continuously in print since 1982 and now in its third edition, it's probably _the_ book that did most to teach the American public how to "do" mediation.
It's full of nuts-and-bolts advice on everything from what to say to where to put the chairs. And it's got something some other mediation books lack: a sense of the "spirituality" of mediation.
For the techniques in this volume grew out of the Friends Conflict Resolution Programs (FCRP). And the Religious Society of Friends ("Quakers") is pretty good at conflict resolution.
(It's those "meetings." Some readers may know that in the early days of the United States, a half-century of so before the Emancipation Proclamation, the Friends unilaterally, voluntarily, and unanimously freed every last one of their slaves -- and paid them to boot, if I'm not mistaken. And anybody who has ever attended a Quaker meeting will understand why, even if they've never heard of John Woolman.)
I've got quite a few Quakers in my family tree, so I'm pleased by this approach. But it's very understated and mostly behind the scenes, so the casual reader will notice only that the book has a certain mood or tone.
What's really going on is that the mediation advice herein is implicitly predicated on the presumption that people are competent to settle their own disputes because each of them has "that of God" within. And the extraordinary sensitivity of the advice is based firmly on Quaker sensibilities: namely, respect for the individual conscience as the very voice of God, and a profound belief in the power of _listening_ both to others and to oneself.
The result is a book of advice on mediation that looks an awful lot like a book on how to grasp the "sense of a meeting." Even beyond the nuts and bolts, the "flavor" of the book will itself help the reader get a feel for what mediation is all about. That's a nice feature in a book on ADR, and it's no wonder Beer's book has been in print for so long.
Allan Goodman's _Basic Skills for the New Mediator_ is a good companion volume, by the way. His book is more aimed at people who do mediation in "courtlike" settings, whereas Beer's is for pretty much any context (including workplace and family, both of which she discusses). The two together are a powerful combination of resources, arguably surpassing many more expensive books on the subject.
And for a good history of the subject of ADR, see Linda Singer's _Settling Disputes_, which I've also reviewed.
Couldn't Be Better.......2000-11-12
As a mediator and one who trains others how to mediate, I highly recommend this clearly written,comprehensive mediation handbook. I have yet to see a more practical book on mediation skills.
Recommended for beginners and experienced mediators alike.......1999-07-25
As a trainer of community mediators, I am often asked to suggest books on the subject. One book I definitely recommend is Jennifer Beer's Mediator's Handbook -- and it is also a book I often go back to myself. It's like having a smart, experienced and helpful colleague available whenever I want, whether for specific problem solving or for more general inspirational conversation!

Customer Reviews:
Excellent Resource Manual.......2007-03-08
I purchased 3 different books regarding faciliation techniques and guidelines and this was the ultimate. It is set out very clearly, provides background to faciliation and then systematically steps through an end-to-end process including a wide range of techniques to select from when developing a plan for a facilitation workshop.
A TOP-NOTCH, IN-DEPTH INTRODUCTION TO FACILITATION........2005-08-09
An extraordinarily rich and in-depth introduction to the subject. Each chapter is written by one or more experts. The book covers such topics as:
- creating an ongoing client relationship;
- the skilled facilitator approach;
- process issues such as difficult personalities;
- facilitation planning and preparation;
- building trust;
- the art of drawing out the best in people;
- building a collaborative environment;
- facilitating the whole system in the room;
- improvisation in facilitation;
- virtual meetings;
- facilitating communication in group decision making discussions;
- how to build you facilitation expertise.
These topics are but a sampling, to give some idea of the scope and depth of this most valuable volume, which takes the reader far deeper than methods and techniques. The book is well organized and very accessible. Based on our organization diagnosis, design and change consulting experience (www.FutureOrganization.com), we find this book to be a terrific resource for practitioners.
The Facilitation Reference Book.......2005-04-20
I have over 35 years of experience in facilitation, working in villages, multinational companies, intergovernmental bodies and not-for-profit organizations. The IAF Handbook of Group Facilitation is the reference book of facilitation. From the day it arrived I began using it.
Chapters cover a wide array of applications, methods and theory of faciliation. Topics such as visual facilitation, the use of stories in facilitation, training of facilitators, facilitation as a communications tool and much more make this book a must have for those concerned with the profession of facilitation

This handbook invites readers who are interested in mediation, negotiation, and conflict resolution to share the perspectives of experts in the field. Contributors include scholars, mediators, trainers, and negotiators, all of whom are passionate about their work.The handbook takes an interdisciplinary approach to mediation, emphasizing both internal and external factors as important sources of influence when negotiating conflicts. It explores the cultural and institutional frameworks that have shaped intervention processes, and it considers which intervention techniques might work - when, how, and why. Particular topics covered include: understanding variation in mediation programs; the dynamics of power in child custody mediation; pre-mediation strategies for dealing with strong emotions; and developing a conflict-positive organization.The Blackwell Handbook of Mediation affirms that the study of mediation, negotiation, and conflict resolution has moved beyond experimental research and descriptive analyses into a more sophisticated domain.

Book Description
Whether you work in the corporate world, a nonprofit organization, or the government sector, you likely face the need to work with others to solve problems and make decisions on a daily basis. And you've undoubtedly been frustrated by how laborious and conflict-ridden such group efforts can be. At all levels – from neighborhood block associations to boards of directors of multinational corporations – the consensus building process is highly effective in an increasingly fragmented, contentious society. In addition, the old top-down methods such as Robert’s Rules of Orders often prompt more problems then they solve. Consensus helps you to implement better, more creative solutions. It provides a winning alternative to top-down decision making – and even parliamentary procedure. By learning to build consensus, stakeholders come to understand and respect one another’s perspectives. The consensus building process allows participants to find solutions and forge agreements that meet everyone’s needs – and provides a meaningful basis for effective, long-range implementation of decisions. The Consensus Building Handbook provides a blueprint to help make the process work in your organization, including a practical, quick-reference Short Guide. Plus, you’ll find in-depth commentary and seventeen case studies with in-depth commentaries to provide the theoretical basis for this new approach. CASE STUDIES INCLUDE: Activating a Policy Network: The Case of Mainport Schiphol The Northern Oxford County Coalition: Four Maine Towns Tackle a Public Health Mystery The Chelsea Charter Consensus Process Resolving Science-Intensive Public Policy Disputes: Reflections on the New York Bight Initiative Negotiation Superfund Cleanup at the Massachusetts Military Reservation RuleNet: An Experiment in Online Consensus Building Regulatory Negotiations: The Native American Experience The Chattanooga Process: A City’s Vision Is Realized From City Hall to the Streets: A Community Plan Meets the Real World The Catron County Citizens Group: A Case Study in Community Collaboration Facilitating Statewide HIV/AIDS Policies and Priorities in Colorado Building Consensus for Change Within a Major Corporation: The Case of Levi-Strauss & Company
Customer Reviews:
An amazing achievement.......1999-10-29
This is a splendid compendium of articles and case studies by some of the leading practitioners in the field of dispute resolution. A true magnum opus which is worth the price. It takes the "fluff" out of negotiation literature and presents a welcome mix of theory and practice.

Facilitation - Working with People.......2003-09-26
This group puts together a wonderful message of how to manage group meetings with heart. They give clear examples of activities that can be used to defuse conflict, enhance team effectiveness, and methods to monitor yourself and your team for leaving your baggage behind and achieving group synergy. If yours is a consensus-oriented organization, or you'd like to begin using consensus-based decision making, this is a great book. See also their book specifically for meeting facilitation, "The Art of Facilitation".
A hand book for mastering the dynamics of groups........2000-04-03
The Zen of Groups is a handbook for effective group participation. It achieves this through distinguishing the elements of group dynamics.
The Zen of Groups is written in simple language and makes complex and subtile issues clear and easy to understand. This gives both the beginner and advanced facilitator or group participant alike access to understanding and making a useful difference in the dynamics of any group.
The Zen of Groups also has a section of tools and processes which can be applied to assist groups which are stuck or not acheveing their purpose to move forward.
I highly recomend this book to anyone wanting to develop a greater understanding of the the dynamics of groups. I use it all the time as a resource in my practice as a professional facilitator.
