Book Description
Over the last decade or so research into bullying, emotional abuse and harassment at work, as distinct from harassment based on sex or race and primarily of a non-physical nature, has emerged as a new field of study. Two main academic streams have emerged: a European tradition applying the concept of 'mobbing' or 'bullying' and the American tradition, primarily identified through concepts such as emotional abuse and mistreatment. One focuses on the perpetrator, the other on the victim. In addition, research in this field has also started in Australia and South Africa. All are brought together in this work, in a synthesis of research and analysis of practice in the field. Bullying and Emotional Abuse in the Workplace aims to document the existence and consequences of the problem of bullying, to explore its causes and to investigate the effectiveness of approaches aimed at mitigating and managing the problem, as well as to offer suggestions for further progress in this important new field.

Book Description
A half-century of psychotherapy research has shown that the quality of the therapeutic alliance is the most robust predictor of treatment success. This unique book provides a systematic framework for negotiating ruptures and strains in the therapeutic alliance and transforming them into therapeutic breakthroughs. Cutting-edge developments in psychoanalysis and other modalities are synthesized with original research and clinical wisdom gleaned from years of work in the field. The result is a practical and highly sophisticated guide that spells out clear principles of intervention while at the same time inspiring therapists toward greater creativity.
Customer Reviews:
This book is a real gem!.......2006-06-15
This book is a real gem! The authors, who are both highly respected clinicians and researchers have produced something truly unique here. At one level it's a systematic guide to dealing with therapeutic impasses. Any therapist concerned with issues such as patient resistance, transference and countertransference, working with hard to reach patients, patient anger and hostility, and so on, will find this book invaluable. At another level, this book provides a remarkable review of cutting-edge developments in contemporary psychoanalysis and spells out their clinical implications in a clear and precise fashion. Anyone who is interested in finding out what's happening in relational psychoanalysis (perhaps the most important development in psychoanalytic theory and practice to emerge in this generation), will find this to be one of the clearest and most coherent expositions available. And finally, this is the only book I know of that focuses extensively on the role of MINDFULNESS PRACTICE in the training of therapists.
Readers who appreciate this book will also be interested in the authors' training DVD "RESOLVING THERAPEUTIC IMPASSES" which is available on Amazon.com.
One of the best "how-to books" on what works in therapy!.......2005-01-29
I am a practising pshychologist and I've read numerous books on "transference", "counter transference" and the "therapeutic alliance" (everything from Freud to modern theorists) but nothing comes close to this book: It's very informative, higly structured and precise. It has tremendous practical value for all therapists (regardless of theraputic orientation, though it might even be of "extra value" to the CBT-therapist) especially if you "get stuck" when treating a patient or if you're treating "personality disordered" patients. Good balance between theory and case examples. Also of great help if you're a therapy supervisor!

Help for us all.......2003-07-11
"HUMAN RESOURCES PROFESSIONALS AND IN-HOUSE COUNSEL SHOULD UTTER A COLLECTIVE SIGH OF RELIEF. Drs. James Turner and Michael Gelles have parlayed their vast years of experience with-and extensive study of-workplace violence into A STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE aptly named Threat Assessment. For those on the front line in the workplace who know that the statistical odds are high that they will be forced to deal with a threat or incident of violence, this unique book METHODICALLY LAYS OUT THE ISSUES, THE ANALYSES AND THE POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS. The case studies-based on thousands of actual cases on which Drs. Turner and Gelles consulted-are INSTRUCTIVE AND INVALUABLE. No longer does a human resources professional have to freeze, not knowing whether s/he is facing a grave threat or simply a bluffing bully. Like conducting regular disaster or fire drills, reading this book PROVIDES THE PREPARATION ONE NEEDS to calmly but rapidly access the threat, implement the Crisis Management Plan and, hopefully, avoid catastrophe."

Book Description
Working in a stressful environment not only increases the risk of physical illness or distress, but also increases the likelihood of workplace accidents. While legislation provides some guidelines for risk assessment of physical hazards, there remains limited guidance on the risks of psychosocial hazards, such as occupational stress.
This book takes the risk management approach to stress evaluation in the workplace, offering practical guidelines for the audit, assessment and mitigation of workplace stressors. Based on both research and case-studies, this book provides a comprehensive source of theoretical and practical information for students and practitioners alike.

Customer Reviews:
Their seminars are great, and so is this book!!!.......2001-05-05
Having previously had the opportunity to sit in on one of Mr. Sorensen and Mr. Wilder's lectures on Aggression Management, I was excited to learn that their program was now available in textbook form. The book is as easy to read as their seminars are to follow. The illustrations are clear, and the techniques simple to understand. I am using this book as the basis for training our EMT's, and have recommended it to our nursing staff and security staff as well. I recently learned they will be lecturing in our area again next month, and I look forward to the opportunity to attend their program.
Definitive Work.......2001-04-25
Essentials is the book to read if you are in a healthcare setting, involved in safety/security for any organization actually. Wilder and Sorensen cut to the chase and tell it like it is. The advice in this piece of work is sound, solid and proven. In todays workplace enviorment it is nearly a crime against employees and business invitees not to have read and implemented the information provided by two of the country's premier experts in the field. Just finished my first read through and am about to give it a go again. I know it will be of tremendous help to me and my crew.

Essentials of Aggression Management in Health Care.......2001-02-27
I am the owner of a company that specializes in personal safety & defensive tactics for healthcare staff & healthcare safety & security officers.Several days ago came into possession of an outstanding new book. Essentials of Aggression Management in Health Care.I sat down and did the customary "quick read", thinking that it would be just aother of several re-hashings of "handling those people who are out of control in the healthcare setting'. After going over it, I went back and took some real time and read it in depth and highlighted all the life saving / important informaton in the book. (3/4 of my book has several colors of highlighting on it)After being in the training business for many years and traveling the U.S. to many hospitals I find this book i the cutting edge and should be made mandatory for ALL healthcare workers. You must remember that most healthcare providers look at the subjects that they meet CLINICALLY an not CRIMINALLY, they never believe or think that they can be the target of an attack ... until it's too late. ALL healthcare providers from the ones on the street to the late nght staff in a small hospital should, NO, MUST read this book.If you work in healthcare you know some of the risk you face, if your organization seems blind to your risk on the street or in the hospital, THIS is the book to help you and them understand the threat and the answers. This book covers ALL the bases, from verbalization to simple hands on safety. If you have ANY questions on this book and what it offers to the healthcare provider cantact me at DALE4175@WEBTV.NETDon't read this book just once, read it and live it.
