Book Description
This classic in organizational theory provides a succinct overview of the principal schools of thought as it presents a critical, sociopsychological, and historical orientation to the field of organizational analysis. Vividly written, with theories made concrete by specific, student-oriented examples, it takes a critical view toward organizations, analyzing their impact on individuals, groups, and society as a whole. New chapters on economic theories of organization and the conditional power theory are among the features of this revised edition.
Customer Reviews:
A "Must Read" for Public Administration Students.......2001-04-19
This is an extremely beneficial reading for those who have a general knowledge base of Organizational Theory. Readers who do not have any organizational theory background may consider the book esoteric. Charles Perrow's critical analysis of organizational theory identifies the general evolution of models of organizational theory and respective influence on the field of organizational theory. The book cites several case examples to help create mental hooks for the basis of each model's origin. Perrow's "Complex Organizations" is dichotomized between the schools of sociology and administration. Organizational theory is not easy to digest but this book is very easy to read and digest in just a few sittings.

Book Description
Practical and incisive, Reinventing Fundraising rejects the notion that women make unenlightened philanthropists. Shaw and Taylor draw from interviews, focus groups, and discussion with more than 150 women philanthropists and scores of development professionals to identify model programs that focus on women's giving. Besides showing the rich history of American women's philanthropy, the authors outline new program models that organizations can tailor to their own female constituents.

Organizational Diagnosis: A Workbook of Theory and Practice
ASIN: 0803955111 |
Book Description
Organizational Diagnosis and Assessment presents sharp-image diagnosis, a distinctive approach to organizational consultation and planned change, that reflects current research and theorizing about organizational change and effectiveness. The authors draw on multiple analytical frames to produce empirically grounded models of sources of ineffectiveness and forces for change, showing how consultants, managers, and applied researchers can break free of unproductive practices and ways of thinking to avoid uncritical adoption of management fads. They offer workable solutions to critical problems and demonstrate ways to meet organizational challenges like market downturns, technological change, and alliances with other organizations.
Organizational Diagnosis and Assessment covers diagnosis and assessment of work groups, organizations, and whole systems. This volume develops analytical approaches for problem solving and strategy formation in both for-profit and not-for-profit organizations. Diagnosis of public policy issues, like assessments of the effectiveness of health systems, is also addressed. Many of the models and techniques contribute to assessing the changing nature of the workplace, examining organizational decline and other life-cycle transitions; gendering; change and diversity in organizational culture and in workforce composition; the spread of new forms of work organization, including teams, flat hierarchies, and networks; new uses of information technology; and mergers and alliances among organizations.
Organizational Diagnosis and Assessment will be invaluable to advanced students, consultants, and applied behavioral scientists in social sciences, management, social work, organizational and industrial psychology, organizational sociology, nursing, and public administration.
Customer Reviews:
Good theory book.......2000-06-19
This is a good theory book although its' title is missleading. Do not expect it to be an organizational diagnosis tool book. It goes through a lot of theory and pardigms and uses case interesting case studies. It is usful if you want to learn the basic OB theories (such as open system model, diagnosis models). The book also gives quite a comprehensive review of most HR areas of interest. But Saying that it bridges the gap between theory and practice is a bit too much. I do not feel as if I can take this book tomorrow morning and implement it in my work. It has potential but again, this is not a tool book !

Book Description
While many books hype the latest fad, here at last (!) is a ?realist's' toolbox designed for public administrators who need to know the costs as well as the benefits of managerial theories and technologies.
-- Mel Dubnick, Department of Public Administration at Rutgers University and former Managing Editor of the Public Administration Review
Today's public administrators must be more than the effective managers of their agencies' internal operations. In order to manage a complex set of interorganizational relationships spanning governments, nonprofit organizations and private firms in a complex global economy, they and their organizations must be capable of great agility and change. Effectiveness is a necessary but not sufficient condition for success: Today's public managers must reach beyond competence to be creative innovators and agents of change.
This book introduces public sector professionals to a set of innovation tools: Strategic Planning, Reengineering, Total Quality Management, Benchmarking, Performance Measurement and Management, Team Management, Privatization. It shows how to understand them, use them and integrate them into any organization, and how they will take public managers beyond competence to be creative innovators.
The creative public manager must continually look for new tools and new approaches. Tools for Innovators will help in this search, and in meeting and surmounting the challenges of a changing public sector.
Customer Reviews:
nothing new.......2002-07-04
Using the over-used word "creative" as a shield, "Tools for Innovators" rehashes common-sense and stale ideas as exciting new methods for public managers. Current and aspiring managers should avoid this platitude-ridden guide: It will not improve your managerial skills, only waste time.
Creative Popular Tools.......2000-09-29
This book sums up the some popular management tools to be used in public organizations with the intent of helping them to meet citizens demands of highest quality service. Including Strategic Planning, Total Quality Management, Re-Engineering, Benchmarking, Outsourcing, many approachments (or tools) that can be useful in restructuring public organizations are told in this valuable book. Readers who want to understand the basic principles of popular management tools developed for private sector organizations (but can be applied to public sector)should read this book. One of the obvious weaknesses of the book is its cases which were not well-developed.
Overall, I recommend Cohen's book to readers who have spare time.

Some Good Stuff if Your Patience is Strong Enough.......2002-12-19
As a student of change and one who writes and consults on the subject I found this pretty academic and full of theory. These folks get connected at the top of companies and then feedback to everyone what they observe from the mountaintop. What they dont seem to consider is whats happening along the way up - since they fly with the executives. There are a few scraps in here if you have time to find them. Average at best.
Gets to the heart of the matter.......1999-05-09
This excellent text on change management focuses on the role that human nature and psychology play in management, and offers wise advice on how to implement significant change, such as in the transition from a project management based organization to a TQM or balanced scorecard (continuous) management process, or to support business process improvements or reengineering. It is optimistic and helpful -- and short enough to give to your senior managers. Get several copies and pass around; this is a low-cost/low-risk way to get change management started in your organization.

Required reading.......2003-06-26
This would be an excellent book for those majoring in the business field to add to their academic studies. It is also a gifted preparation for what lies ahead in service for any line of work.
I wish this had been available decades ago.
A public good.......2002-10-25
The federal government is a unique place to work. Most people agree that it is more difficult to fire subordinates there than in the private sector and, due to the government's arcane hiring process, it is often a challenge to put the right person in the right job. Add to this mix Congressional oversight, the occasional media spotlight, the lack of a bottom line, and the big-picture question (not asked often enough) "what are we doing and why are we doing it," and you have an environment foreign to many private sector employees.
Enter Richard Haass's book the Bureaucratic Entrepreneur, an update of his 1993 primer the Power to Persuade. Haass has held a number of positions in previous government administrations, including at the NSC and the Defense and State Departments. His book is packed with words of wisdom for the harried bureaucrat who at the end of the day may wonder just what he accomplished. Although Haass's advice appears machiavellian (he argues that Machiavelli is often misunderstood) and the author does not have a firm grasp on whether his audience is the entry-level employee or the senior-level political appointee, it is worth putting up with these drawbacks for the original focus and insight on managing and leading in the public sector. The bibliography alone is reason enough to buy the book.
Low-level or high, every public-sector employee should read the Bureaucratic Entrepreneur before starting his or her new government job. They should then re-read it every few years to ensure that they are on track and using the tools Haass lays out to be effective in one of the most "unruly" organizations around.

Very user-friendly and educational.......2005-11-20
Mr. Fombrun is the reputation expert. In this book he and Mr. Van Riel do a great job of ilustrating corporate reputation in simple and clear terms. The use of graphs, examples, metrics, and references to other authors makes the content very credible and useful. This book serves as a guide for quickly applying the concepts of reputation to any organization. It's very easy to read. Don't expect deepness, it's more of a excellent introductory text for those unfamiliar with the topic of corporate reputation.
What Your CEO Needs to Know!.......2003-10-04
Finally something I can use to convince my CEO that reputations can and should be managed! The book provides a comprehensive overview of the critical success factors of reputation management and discusses a number of interesting case studies to underline key points. Though its a complex subject the book reads pretty easy and I could relate most of it to my daily work as a communications professional. To me, the bottom line is I can now start a discussion in my firm about the need for managing reputation and use solid arguments based on both research and other companies' best practice. It seems that being able to explain what drives reputation and who should be involved in managing it is half the work...

Book Description
Everyone complains about bureaucracy--this book shows what can be done to replace it with more humane and effective systems of organization. The Pinchots describe effective organizations that fully utilize the intelligence of all employees, not just those at the top.
Customer Reviews:
Insightful!.......2001-04-12
How can citizens of a society that exalts freedom consent to spend the majority of their lives laboring within organizations that are hierarchical, slow-moving and dictatorial? Gifford and Elizabeth Pinchot raised that question in their heralded 1993 book and provided the following answer: Not willingly and not for long. The Pinchots were among the first management scholars to predict the demise of the military-style command structure, along with its inherent secrecy and Machiavellian political sniping. Although a slew of books devoted to the same theme have been published since, none have done a better job at explaining the potential of informed and engaged employees who don't fear their bosses too much to take decisive action. We [...] strongly recommend this book, which brims with meticulous case histories showing how teams, employee-owned companies and internal free-market competition have transformed organizations. (In fact, the Pinchots coined the term "intraprenuership" to describe this process.) While you might not be convinced that a company run by consensus can ever compete with one run by The Prince, this book gives you hope that it can.
Manifesto for Good People Trapped in Bad Organizations.......2000-04-09
The seven essentials of organizational intelligence include widespread truth and rights; freedom of enterprise, liberated teams, equality and diversity, voluntary learning networks, democratic self-rule, and limited corporate government. It was this book, and the very strong applause that the author received from all those attending OSS '96, that caused me to realize that the U.S. Intelligence Community is just chock full of very good people that want to change, but are not being allowed to change by the organizational circumstances within which they are trapped-frozen in time and budget.

Organizational Ethics in Health Care: Principles, Cases, and Practical Solutions
ASIN: 0195129806 |
Book Description
The ethical aspects of the operation of healthcare organizations (HCOs) are central to the delivery of health care. Organization Ethics in Health Care begins by assessing the shortcomings of clinical ethics, business ethics, and professional ethics as a basis for solving problems that have emerged in healthcare delivery systems since the advent of managed care. The text focuses on the meaning of the developent of the HCO in our society and what its present status is. The authors point out that moral parameters endorsed by society have guided previous shifts in the relationships among important HCO stakeholders, but that these parameters have been unclear or missing altogether during the past tumultous decade. Finally, they describe the key elements for the successful implementation of a fully functioning healthcare organization ethics program and what it can mean to the institution, its associated clinicians and employees, its patients, and its community. Moving from theory to practical application, this book will serve as an excellent student text, a professional guide, and a reference work.
