With first-chapter allusions to martial arts, "flow," "mind like water," and other concepts borrowed from the East (and usually mangled), you'd almost think this self-helper from David Allen should have been called Zen and the Art of Schedule Maintenance.

Not quite. Yes, Getting Things Done offers a complete system for downloading all those free-floating gotta-do's clogging your brain into a sophisticated framework of files and action lists--all purportedly to free your mind to focus on whatever you're working on. However, it still operates from the decidedly Western notion that if we could just get really, really organized, we could turn ourselves into 24/7 productivity machines. (To wit, Allen, whom the New Economy bible Fast Company has dubbed "the personal productivity guru," suggests that instead of meditating on crouching tigers and hidden dragons while you wait for a plane, you should unsheathe that high-tech saber known as the cell phone and attack that list of calls you need to return.)

As whole-life-organizing systems go, Allen's is pretty good, even fun and therapeutic. It starts with the exhortation to take every unaccounted-for scrap of paper in your workstation that you can't junk, The next step is to write down every unaccounted-for gotta-do cramming your head onto its own scrap of paper. Finally, throw the whole stew into a giant "in-basket"

That's where the processing and prioritizing begin; in Allen's system, it get a little convoluted at times, rife as it is with fancy terms, subterms, and sub-subterms for even the simplest concepts. Thank goodness the spine of his system is captured on a straightforward, one-page flowchart that you can pin over your desk and repeatedly consult without having to refer back to the book. That alone is worth the purchase price. Also of value is Allen's ingenious Two-Minute Rule: if there's anything you absolutely must do that you can do right now in two minutes or less, then do it now, thus freeing up your time and mind tenfold over the long term. It's commonsense advice so obvious that most of us completely overlook it, much to our detriment; Allen excels at dispensing such wisdom in this useful, if somewhat belabored, self-improver aimed at everyone from CEOs to soccer moms (who we all know are more organized than most CEOs to start with). --Timothy Murphy

5 out of 5 stars If you have deadlines, you need this book.......2007-10-03

I have an associate who can't meet deadlines. I give him a deadline and set it two weeks before the project is needed. Doesn't matter. He won't make it. So I bought him this book. "No more projects until you read this," I told him.

He read it. He's not missed a project deadline yet.

People who have their own businesses, generally have deadlines and projects. Things have to be done by a certain time. If nothing else, we have to have our income tax in by midnight April 15 in the U.S.

But many people put things off and that creates stress. Stress for the person who procrastinates and stress for those who depend on him or her. We all need a time management system.

This book will help you to clear out your clutter. It will help you to know how to handle a project, to break it up and work at it in a way that's effective for you.

Highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars Read the full version first, use abridged audio for review.......2007-10-01

While the abridged audio CD version of Getting Things Done makes a perfect refresher tool for those who read the full book originally, too much detail and background is missing for this to be someone's first introduction to the GTD method of time management. Unfortunately, the unabridged audio won't be widely available until 2008.

Overall, the GTD system has a lot to offer. It's "open source" and "platform-independent," meaning you can use as much or as little of it as you want and adapt it to whatever organizational system you already like or are forced to use by circumstance--Outlook, FranklinCovey, 3x5s, whatever. Yes, it pretty much comes down to making a to-do list, but GTD's approach adds the subtle differences that make the lists actually effective reminders and trackers, rather than an overwhelming mess o' stuff to get done. If you've ever written something down on a list and then never looked at it again, give GTD a try.

5 out of 5 stars This book will change your life.......2007-10-01

I first bought this book about 6 months ago, and it has improved my life incredibly. Even if you don't follow every one of his suggestions, or choose not to employ David Allen's GTD system, at the very least you'll gain a much greater understanding of stress-free productivity, effective workplaces, and the bottlenecks that prevent people from achieving their full productive potential.

It certainly took longer to set up my system than the "2 days" Allen continuously mentions in the book, but even while you're setting up and fine-tuning your personal system, you begin to get a sense of that "stress-free productivity". Now, my system is running smoothly, and I've been able to control my numerous projects with greater efficiency and effectiveness.

Most importantly, having a system in place will enable you to focus on your greater goals. I work in two startup companies, but I've always had a dream of being involved in local politics; now I'm also helping coordinate a grassroots political campaign in addition to my 9-5 commitments. You may want to spend more time with your family or significant other, go golfing, start a new business venture or take up a new hobby. This book can give you the system and the structure to allow you to pursue whatever life goals you have, and I consider it an invaluable life resource. I've recommended it to many of my friends and family, and they've experienced similar results.

5 out of 5 stars I love David Allen's teachings!.......2007-09-29

I like this book, but I particulary loved his second book, "Ready for Anything," which I consider a potentially life-changing book. Actually, read both...more than once!

5 out of 5 stars Possibly a life changer.......2007-09-23

Allen's methodology works like magic. I finished reading the book a week ago, and I can say it had a great impact on the way I organize my life. This is much more than how to organize your time, It's about a very subtle technique - along with technology support - that helps you manage your ideas or projects and have them executed with much less effort. You would need a PDA and the Microsoft 0utlook add-in for GTD (Getting Things Done) to experience the full benefit.

Change can be a blessing or a curse, depending on your perspective. The message of Who Moved My Cheese? is that all can come to see it as a blessing, if they understand the nature of cheese and the role it plays in their lives. Who Moved My Cheese? is a parable that takes place in a maze. Four beings live in that maze: Sniff and Scurry are mice--nonanalytical and nonjudgmental, they just want cheese and are willing to do whatever it takes to get it. Hem and Haw are "littlepeople," mouse-size humans who have an entirely different relationship with cheese. It's not just sustenance to them; it's their self-image. Their lives and belief systems are built around the cheese they've found. Most of us reading the story will see the cheese as something related to our livelihoods--our jobs, our career paths, the industries we work in--although it can stand for anything, from health to relationships. The point of the story is that we have to be alert to changes in the cheese, and be prepared to go running off in search of new sources of cheese when the cheese we have runs out.

Dr. Johnson, coauthor of The One Minute Manager and many other books, presents this parable to business, church groups, schools, military organizations--anyplace where you find people who may fear or resist change. And although more analytical and skeptical readers may find the tale a little too simplistic, its beauty is that it sums up all natural history in just 94 pages: Things change. They always have changed and always will change. And while there's no single way to deal with change, the consequence of pretending change won't happen is always the same: The cheese runs out. --Lou Schuler

3 out of 5 stars It's an OK book.......2007-10-04

Just like most of the people, I got this book from my employer (I hope it's not a sign of restructuring :)).
I'm afraid that I do a too good job of reviewing the book one would no longer need to buy it anymore. In essence, the whole book can be summarized in about 10 statements. In all fairness though, these are insightful and worth meditating on statements.
So, like I said... An OK book.

3 out of 5 stars Thought Provoking.......2007-10-03

The book is an easy and quick read but the story will put thoughts in your head that you will think about for years if not a lifetime. Life brings us all challenges so this book is for all of us... That is, unless your life is perfect.

1 out of 5 stars Genuinely Insulting..........2007-09-29

Genuinely insulting to the independent thinker. Yeah I know, it's been said countless times but I felt the need to reinforce that notion. If you're someone that's more comfortable being a follower and having your life and work environment structured for you then you're more likely to enjoy this book and find something meaningful in it. If you're someone that uses logic and reason to guide your decisions then don't waste your time or money on this rehashed brainwashing manual. This is a book written for unquestioning, mindless followers, not a book for leaders. But a tool that leaders would use to try and control their subordinates.

4 out of 5 stars who moved my cheese.......2007-09-21

Light, but nevertheless thought provoking reading. Good for an hour or so by the fire.

1 out of 5 stars Overrated.......2007-09-17

This book has been considered a classic by many and used widely in the corporate world. In my opinion, however, if you are seriously considering reinventing yourself or improving how you manage life, this book won't get you there. Change doesn't come about with a superficial one-hour read. Consider a book like "The Path of Least Resistance" by Robert Fritz. It will take more time and effort, but I think it's a seminal work in the field of human motivational theory. If you give it a chance, it might transform you.

5 out of 5 stars eye opening.......2007-04-18

This book will be almost impossible for the majority of society to swallow but if you are open to changing your lifestyle and want to be a healthy person, these methods will work. I do not feel that an all organic diet is possible for a lot of people or even necessary. But the quality of food we eat is very important and I think he sets the stage to prove to everyone how important our diet is in our well-being. If you can follow this book and take half of it to heart, it will add quality years to your life.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Book.......2007-03-09

This book is really well written. It is easy to understand and very helpful. We learn things that we didn't ever think about before. It does not only give you information about nutrition and good health but also shows you how to use this information. I really liked it. It is also used in my nutrition class in college. Wonderful!

4 out of 5 stars Great format, great guide to health living.......2007-02-11

This book has very good structure and serves as a great guide to a healthy lifestyle. I've been doing the exercises outlined in the book along with guidance from a Chek practicioner in my area. It's a different way to the traditional exercise programs of which most of us are accustomed. He gives interesting guidelines to healthy eating and lifestyle habits and has a large following, probably for good reason. My only criticism would be that while the author presents these concepts in a very usable manner, it is a bit void of true scientific backing for his claims. But, overall, it's a book well worth reading for anyone interested in living a healthy lifestyle.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2007-09-30

I bought this CD for use as a relaxation activity in an early childhood classroom for 3 to 5 year old children and it's wonderful. If I could give it more stars, it would have 10! This would be great for your child to listen to at night to help them wind down for bedtime, or in the afternoon for a rest time activity, and it's great for the classroom. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Great for my 3 yr old!!.......2007-09-25

I have an especially bright but anxious 3 1/2 yr old. I wasn't sure whe was going to take to this cd even after I listened to it. But she LOVES it and goes to sleep every night listening to it! I think it gives her something other than monsters to think about as she is falling asleep. We have been nightmare free wince we got it a week ago!!! I am thinking of making a copy for my 9 month old to listen to in our room as well.. the voice is so soothing and maybe she will like it as too!

5 out of 5 stars Soothing and relaxing for little ones.......2007-09-23

I love these cd's. I got this for my 5yr old because he is highly sensitive. After the daily stresses of (to him) loud noise, ugly smells, crowed class rooms, this cd helped him make it through kindergarden. And now he's enjoying first grade. I don't know what I would of done without Indigo Dreams.

4 out of 5 stars A nice cd.......2007-09-08

My kids and I have listened to this, and it's very relaxing. My 4-yr-old son and 8-yr-old daughter have both been fairly wiggle-free during listening. It's a nice wind-down at the end of the day. Sometimes the speaker seems a little too slow-talking for me, but when I just relax and calm down, it doesn't bug me as much. I very much enjoy relaxation and visualization techniques, and am happy to pass along the benefits to my kids.

5 out of 5 stars Great for 4 year olds and 30 year olds!.......2007-06-22

I bought this for my 4-year-old daughter who is high-spirited and has a hard time settling down at night. She loves this. We keep the CD on "repeat" through the night. That way if she wakes up, she just listens to the CD and it puts her back to sleep. No need to come to Mom and Dad's room! Yay! It's also the only meditation CD that I enjoy, for myself.

Kabat-Zinn, founder of the Stress Reduction Clinic at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center, is perhaps the best-known proponent of using meditation to help patients deal with illness. (The somewhat confusing title is from a line in Zorba the Greek in which the title character refers to the ups and downs of family life as "the full catastrophe.") But this book is also a terrific introduction for anyone who has considered meditating but was afraid it would be too difficult or would include religious practices they found foreign. Kabat-Zinn focuses on "mindfulness," a concept that involves living in the moment, paying attention, and simply "being" rather than "doing." While you can practice anything "mindfully," from taking a walk to cleaning your house, Kabat-Zinn presents several meditation techniques that focus the attention most clearly, whether it's on a simple phrase, your breathing, or various parts of your body. The book goes into detail about how hospital patients have either improved their health or simply come to feel better despite their illness by using these techniques, but these meditations can help anyone deal with stress and gain a calmer outlook on life. "When we use the word healing to describe the experiences of people in the stress clinic, what we mean above all is that they are undergoing a profound transformation of view," Kabat-Zinn writes. "Out of this shift in perspective comes an ability to act with greater balance and inner security in the world." --Ben Kallen

5 out of 5 stars The Feeling Good Handbook.......2007-09-16

this is an awesome book to help those with anxiety, depression or someone expeiercing stress related problems . I only wish i had it sooner.

4 out of 5 stars Meditation does not have to mean sitting still.......2007-07-28

Being mindful is a well-known technique for lowering stress. Jon Kabat Zinn has the experience to show us how this is done. I really liked this book and his descriptions.
However, as a person with ADD, the idea of trying to sit still for 45 minutes and quieting my mind seemed impossible. But after his explanations of walking meditation and using yoga as meditation I could see myself meditating.
This book is a classic and rightly so. Well worth your time (for reading and trying the techniques) and money (for the book, and if you use yoga for the accessories).

5 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL!.......2007-07-19

I echo what others have said, it opens up a new way of thinking about life. All of it-the good and bad. How you relate to the world as a whole, and the possibilities that awit you. It's not magical and "out there" but rather down to earth and user-friendly.

Doesn't matter your religion/lack of religion. It integrates very well with my Christian faith.

This book lets you consider things at your own pace and doesn't force anything on you. It deals with your reality and success isn't defined as being 100% happy all the time. Are you sad? Deal with that. Are you scared? That's ok. Are things going well? Great, now we can move onto new things from here.

I also have "where ever you go, there you are". As a biologist I feel this one is more intriguing but they both have a place.

5 out of 5 stars A remarkable book.......2007-07-03

This is an extraordinary work, which will be of immense value to those suffering pain or grave illness. Its value lies in very practical, repeat practical, advice based on clinical practice and experience which have benefited many. It is original and pathbreaking. Above all, it holds out hope to those who may have abandoned it.

Got a stress case in your life? Of course you do: "Without question, many of us have mastered the neurotic art of spending much of our lives worrying about a variety of things all at once." Carlson's cheerful book aims to make us stop and smell--if not roses--whatever is sitting in front of our noses. Don't Sweat the Small Stuff... offers 100 meditations designed to make you appreciate being alive, keep your emotions (especially anger and dissatisfaction) in proper perspective, and cherish other people as the unique miracles they are. It's an owner's manual of the heart, and if you follow the directions, you will be a happier, more harmonious person. Like Stairmasters, oat bran, and other things that are good for you, the meditations take discipline. Even so, some of the strategies are kind of fun: "Imagine the people in your life as tiny infants and as 100-year-old adults." The trouble is, once you start, it's hard to stop.

1 out of 5 stars Are you kidding me?.......2007-10-07

I can buy "don't sweat the small stuff," but when the author adds "it's all small stuff" he just lost all credibility. It's ALL small stuff? Tell that to a family whose loved one was just murdered. Or a parent who has to raise three severly deformed babies. That's the problem with self-help books of this genre, everything is penned into a nicely managed coral that totally ignores the REAL pains of life. If you want inspirational truth, check out the Bible where even Jesus, who never pulled any punches, tells us "life is difficult."

5 out of 5 stars don,t sweat the small stuff its all small stuff.......2007-10-03

This book should be mandatory in high schools. It would help kids understand in simple ways how to response to emotional and spiritual and body. Very positive book for living the fast pace we live in today..I urge parents to get don,t sweat the small for teens..

I never received the above mentioned book, and ONCE AGAIN very disatisfied with the used book service and will try another company. Granted there was a change of address and later a change in password because "review request" would not accept original password. Very UNSATISFIED wih service, and for $7.00 I would not waist anymore of my valuable time pursuing the mater....James A. Stapleton

PS. If I see the charge on my credit card I will dispute chatge.

4 out of 5 stars Very helpful little book.......2007-09-04

Reading "Dont Sweat the Small Stuff" is a must for people like me who feel that they can't sit down and watch the news until he or she has run down a to-do list and checked off everything.

5 out of 5 stars Putting life into its proper perspective.......2007-08-08

It has been my experience that life has a tendency to give us what we need (at the most unexpected times) when dealing and coping with problems in our lives. The other afternoon, for example, in my disorganized garage, was searching frantically for an old receipt for tax purposes. Now it really wasn't worth much, nevertheless, to me this tiny problem was all pressing and all stressing. In the scheme of things, it wasn't worth the energy. What I did find in one of the old boxes, though, was this terrific little book. Sitting down on a box amongst the dust, I read it for at least an hour and within that short span of time, it truly changed my perspective on what is really important to gain a more loving and stress-free existence.

Interestingly as a child my father's favourite saying was, "Don't sweat the details:" Meaning don't let little things get in the way of what is important. Richard Carlson's message is basically the same. In this treasure of a book, he has written 100 suggestions on how to deal with life's "small stuff", such as developing our patience, compassion, and our tendencies to criticise and make knee-jerk judgements; essentially developing our potential to become more caring and loving human beings.

My personal favourites:

Make Peace with Imperfection

Develop your compassion

Don't interrupt Others or Finish Their Sentences

Become a Better Listener

Become an Early Riser

Stop Blaming Others

Practice Random Acts of Kindness

There are 93 other suggestions in this book that if practiced could well change one's life for the better. But like all things truly valuable, it takes work, practice and discipline to achieve anything worthwhile on this planet.

I've decided to choose one suggestion a day and make a conscious effort to practice it; because I believe if followed will change life's vagaries and problems, at least putting them into a proper perspective.

Highly Recommended.

Book Description

Take two-they're small. And they perform miracles. Suffering a career-ending, potentially crippling injury to her back and right leg, a young dancer named Elaine Petrone tried everyone from orthopedists to yogis to turn her pain and prognosis around. Nothing worked-until she healed herself through a unique program of therapy and exercise based around the use of two small, squishy balls. From there she turned her passion into a mission that is helping the thousands of people who visit her classes conquer pain, stress, and injury.

Now, for relief for sufferers everywhere, comes The Miracle Ball Method, a healing kit containing two miracle balls and a fully illustrated book, all packaged together in an attention-getting clear plastic cylinder. The work itself is simple. Take a sore back: By resting your aching back on the grapefruit-sized balls and letting your body sink into them, you're unworking the muscles that hurt. Pain and tension drain out of the body. Petrone shows how proper breathing (which she demonstrates) works in conjunction with a range of unexercises that call for placing the balls under the back, head, knees, hip, elbow-wherever there's pain-and then resting, rolling, or rotating on them. She points out that relief can come in surprising ways: Lower back pain may be helped by placing the ball under your neck, or a bad knee might be helped by hip work. It's arevolutionary program of relief, from head to toe.

2 out of 5 stars Not all its cracked up to be........2007-10-08

On the basis of the many positive reviews here and because of suffering several months of neck and shoulder pain I purchased the Ball and DVD kit. The back of the DVD clearly stated assistance for Neck and shoulder relief. Watching the DVD which was blemished and had to be polished three times before it was viewable from the beginning I performed the breathing exercises and moved to the "On the Ball" sections and then the "Whole Body Movements." I found nothing that specifically targets the neck and shoulder issues, except one brief camera shot of the balls under the upper back which is not covered in the video.

In addition, the video while beautifully shot is poorly scripted and Elaine and the two people participating in the exercises talk over each other as well as distract Elaine from information she starts to give and them never returns to. It is very frustrating at times because of this.

To date I have found no relief from my neck and shoulder pain from anything on this video. Maybe there are more videos or the book covers more uses and placements of the balls but that is not explained on the dvd jacket and I bought it for the neck and shoulder pain which the jacket was misleadingly indicated was part of the program..

5 out of 5 stars Back pain no more!.......2007-10-06

I have a pronounced scoliosis curve and have struggled with low back pain as well as neck and shoulder pain for many years now. I have tried stretching, therapeutic and restorative yoga, Qi Gong, massage therapy, trigger point therapy, chiropractors, osteopathy, positive thinking...you name it. They've all helped...a little. But nothing has provided the remarkable relief that Ms Petrone's method has brought me. If you suffer and are searching for a way out of your pain, this might just be what you are looking for.

1 out of 5 stars Product Query...........2007-10-03

Hi

Does anyone know if this provides a guide on how to excercise the upper back and shoulders?

Thanks

5 out of 5 stars Excellent product. Great value........2007-09-17

I'm in pretty good shape and active, with few aches and pains. However, I do suffer from occasional lower back stiffness and have bouts of lower back pain about once a year during times of stress and particularly during season change and cold weather. I thought the miracle balls would be a good tool for stretching and releasing tension and hoped adding them to my regimen of exercise would prevent further episodes of pain. I just received the Miracle Balls last week and have used them almost every day, because it just feels so good and relaxing. I have noticed an overall release of body and mental tension during and after use, and improved feeling of alignment and flexibility when doing the other parts of my exercise routine. I've already given a set to a friend who suffers from stiffness and have recommended them to several other people. This is one of only a few items I've ever been inspired to review over several years of shopping on amazon, and I appreciated the reasonable price and efficient delivery as usual!

5 out of 5 stars IF YOU HAVE A BAD BACK OR TIGHT SHOULDERS BUY THESE BALLS!!!!!.......2007-08-18

I have a VERY bad back and in the last 6 months it was crippling on and off. I originally saw these at Costco and didn't buy them because I thought that they were a gimmick. But then I received them in the mail as my mother had bought them hoping that they would help me.. I was having a particularly painful morning when they were delivered to my door...what the heck I tried them out and the difference was immediate. I SWEAR BY THESE BALLS THEY REALLY ARE A MIRACLE!!!!! The only thing that might discourage people is that the spot you were using them on the first day will be painful to use the next day so just wait a day. Your body will get over it and the balls will get softer. BUT DON'T GIVE UP AND STOP USING THEM. DAY OR TWO LATER AND IT WILL BE LESS PAINFUL. My niece who also has a bad back used mine and loved them so I ordered them from Amazon for her. IF YOU HAVE A BAD BACK OR TIGHT SHOULDERS BUY THESE BALLS!!!!

Amazon.com Audiobook Review

"Those who don't know how to fight worry, die young." This ominous advice begins Dale Carnegie's bestseller, How to Stop Worrying and Start Living, an eight-part treatise on the follies of worrying. Like other Carnegie books, this one is packed with good old-fashioned common sense, illustrated with examples drawn from research on historical figures and interviews with business leaders. Somehow, even the most simple advice--such as Carnegie's four-step method of problem solving--is presented in a way that makes you want to write it down and post it on the employee bulletin board. Narrated by the resonant and engaging voice of Andrew McMillan and loaded with relevant real-life examples, this unabridged audiobook maintains interest throughout. 5 out of 5 stars Highly recommend........2007-09-21

This is a great book, I never really considered myself a worrier but looking back now I guess any worry is too much. This book gives real life stories of other people who kicked the worry habit and there will probably be one story in there that will make something click for you and allow you to look at things differently.

5 out of 5 stars Impressive!.......2007-09-09

This is a life changing book!! Another new bestseller that I love and recommend - How to be a Super Hot Woman: 339 Tips to Make Every Man Fall in Love with You and Every Woman Envy You

5 out of 5 stars Chock full of Life-improving lessons.......2007-09-03

Dale Carnegie has unknowingly had such a positive impact on my life. I learned as many critical lessons in his books as I have learned in 16 years of traditional schooling. In the 1980's, HOW TO WIN FRIENDS AND INFLUENCE PEOPLE made me look at others and see where they are coming from. It made me a better friend, a better work associate, a better club member, and a better businessperson. Then in 2005, I listened to the entire unabridged recording of HOW TO STOP WORRYING AND START LIVING. From start to finish, it was loaded with stories, relavant stories, of people just like me and how worrying got them nowhere. And most importantly, this book teaches you how those people learned to LET GO of their worry and truly, start living differently. Since reading this book, I can much more easily let go of things that used to tear me apart and made me sick thinking about. I wish the author was around to thank, but somehow you just know he knows. And the mere fact that these books are still bestsellers today ought to tell you that they are valuable, worthwhile reading, and worth their weight in 24k gold.

5 out of 5 stars I am so happy to have this book.......2007-07-22

I've been dealing with an issue over the last few months that has worried me to no end. I saw this book in a bookstore a couple of weeks ago, purchased it and started reading it. Each time I do, I feel much calmer and am reminded of the fact that some things are out of my control.

One quote out of many helpful ones in this entertaining book is "When the fierce, burning winds blow over our lives - and we cannot prevent them - let us, too, accept the inevitable ... And then get busy and pick up the pieces!"

I want, no I NEED to internalize the messages of the book. I'm going to read it, then I'm going to read it again with a highlighter. I'm going to take several of the quotes and type them and post them strategically all over my home and car and office. I'm also going to order the CDs and wake up and fall asleep listening to them. I am determined to lead a life free from worry. With "How to Stop Worrying and Start Living", I know that I can.

By the way - it's not that every second of my day is consumed by worry. But far too much of it is.

I most highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Manage Energy - great insight........2007-08-23

We need to manage our energy to perform the most important things. We often take our energy for granted and are not aware of our ebbs and flows.
We need to do the most important things when we have the most energy. We need to eat and sleep to have more energy. It originally comes from a sports performance model, but has been adapted for executives. It is also important as we grow older. Truely a new insight for me that unified a few things I ahve been learning.

3 out of 5 stars Push Past Your Limit To Grow.......2007-06-04

I felt this book's main premise was a useful idea, but nothing novel. Expanding past one's limit, followed by a rest period resulting in growth whether physical or psychological. I liked the informational nature of the book, however, I didn't care much for the examples of actual people written about in it. I understand it is used to help prove the points, but it appeared to be fluff to me and I would have liked more information to drill the point home and more sources to back up the info.

Those opinions aside, it is worthwhile, to the point and contains enough information to satisfy reading it once, but I don't expect to re-read it.

5 out of 5 stars Not a silly self-help book.......2007-05-17

At first look, the subtitle "Managing Energy, Not Time" smells of another 'just do this and your life will be great' self-help book. However, this book avoids most of the simplistic approaches other books take. Outlined is excellent, yet straightforward guidance on how to bring into balance a work life that is out of control or at least a bit out of whack. The simple advice given (which regretfully requires some basic self discipline - I prefer to avoid self discipline) is both helpful and if followed, effective. The book is relatively careful not to imply that applying its principles or introducing self discipline is easy. It is, however, unapologetic when suggesting that making a set of changes in how one manages one's life will make a difference. The book also lays out a very helpful distinction between one's energy and one's time - and it is a very helpful distinction - describing a truth that I had not before carefully considered. The book includes numerous case studies of actual people with which the authors have worked. I think you will be able to identify with a number of these case studies. If you feel overwhelmed, exhausted, and/or lack balance in how your work life, home life, and downtime function, take a look at this book.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2007-03-21

Nothing new here. Eat right, get plenty of sleep and drink your water and you too can have more energy. I have to agree with other reviewers that state that this book is poorly written. Instead of providing a method for creating your own energy plan, the authors give simple hazy case examples.

5 out of 5 stars WOW! Awakened to New Way of Looking At Work.......2007-03-06

This book really helped me to discover how to manage my energy and not my time. It gave me skill sets to use for daily life processes.

I have recommended to over 50 people since reading the book and everyone has loved it. Great Book!

In his follow-up to Full Catastrophe Living--a book in which he presented basic meditation techniques as a way of reducing stress and healing from illness--here Jon Kabat-Zinn goes much more deeply into the practice of meditation for its own sake. To Kabat-Zinn, meditation is important because it brings about a state of "mindfulness," a condition of "being" rather than "doing" during which you pay attention to the moment rather than the past, the future, or the multitudinous distractions of modern life. In brief, rather poetic chapters, he describes different meditative practices and what they can do for the practitioner. The idea that meditation is "spiritual" is often confusing to people, Kabat-Zinn writes; he prefers to think of it as what you might call a workout for your consciousness. This book makes learning meditation remarkably easy (although practicing it is not). But it also makes it seem infinitely appealing. --Ben Kallen

5 out of 5 stars A stellar example of the meaning of the word "excellence.".......2007-10-05

If you are interested in spirituality and/or meditation and are looking for a book that is both deep and clear, this is the book to read. You will find that the book is worth several book on the same subject by other people -- and it does it in an articulate, elevated, succint, no-fluff manner that will impress the heck out of you as few books ever will. I must ad a warning, more about the subject matter than about the book per se: Not everyone is ready to assimilate its contents (or any other equally serious meditation book's content, for that matter). The saying that you have to be ready for something in order to understand it applies very much in this case. I can imagine that it could be taken as too ethereal by some people -- those who are not ready. You would need to have lived and realized that there are matters of the soul that you need to take care of to receive its message. But if you are genuinely thirsty about spiritual matters: order it right away! This makes what we normally take as "Eastern" concepts accessible to an educated Western mind, and you realize that there is no need to think of it as Eastern or buddhist or use any label at all. I am really thankful for this book. You will be too.

This can be a life changing book. It clearly outlines the concepts and methods of awareness meditation. I keep a copy on hand to give to people who paths I cross who appear to be lost in the happenings of daily life or those who are suffering major crisis. Whenever it is best to stop the world and get off. If only for a breath.

it's easy to meditate when the book puts you to sleep. oh yeah, don't forget to send more money for the tapes. must be so you can tape your eyes open while reading it.

5 out of 5 stars Book Title Says It All!.......2007-09-16

I have read several of Kabat-Zinn's works and find they are terrific self-helps! "Wherever You Go . . ." is a short, cogent helper to enable the reader to break out of the rut and look at life from a different position. The book is non-denominational and not dogmatic! Any person of any faith or atheist can find the text helpful and instructional. There are eastern philosophical references and some of the meditational technique is based on centuries old practices & techniques. This is one of the books that helped me change my life and resolve some old internal issues. It has also helped my play in Tai Chi Chuan. I highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars superb read and life guide for non-meditators like me.......2007-09-12

Doesn't matter if you meditate or not - this book is a great tool on finding that tranquil balance point as you fly through life. Stressed out? Read this book. No time? Read this book. Worried about deciding in getting this book? Read this book.
