Perfect !!.......2006-12-22
I was assigned to teach at the Master Degree class on "Facility Management" subject focusing on Hotel Facility. I have gone through several books regarding hotel design. I think this book is the best of all. Any designer who reads this book back to back will certainly understand the whole concept. It is not only about how to design the hotel as an architecture piece, but the reader will also understand the hospitality business. This book also covers the design and management issues of related topics such as "Restaurant", "Entertainment Venue" in the hotel. It is the 'must have' for all architects who want to design a hotel efficiently. It can also be a good book for anyone who is in the hospitality business and currently in charge of renovating or upgrading the hotel space; or the hotel's representative who need to communicate with architects or interior designer. This book can be the great tool to evaluate the result of the hotel construction project or even to 'correct' it. The tables and formulas for space calculation in this book are easy enough for anyone to understand. This book can be of great use to all building design professionals. It can also be a valuable one for any people who is interested in hotel business.
The Most Outstanding Resource for Hotel Architecture!.......2006-07-31
The work of hotel design and planning is different from other architectural works; it requires an indepth understanding of hotel business. Therefore, the hotel architecture became one of the toughest job for architects. (Another job is the hospital architecture.)
However, this book proposed design guidelines for a hotel fit to the business pattern. First, it explains various types of hotel properties. Second, it shows not only design guidelines for facilities but also planning approach methods for location selecting and size determination. Finally, if you read this book, you can consider efficient management system of the property from the early phase of design.
Among numerous books on hotel architecture, I think this book is the most outstanding resource.
Good for anyone interested in hospitality design.......2005-11-15
I am an Interior Design student and found this book very helpful in completing a hospitality design. It provides a breakdown of the areas of the hotel, the different types of hotels, and the type of customers that use them. It really helped me in laying out the floor plan. There are also some awesome color pictures of fabulous hotels in the world. I highly recommend for anyone interested in hospitality design.
Great book!.......2004-07-11
This a book that be should always be close to you if you work in the hotel development industry.
Comprehensive and beautiful.......2001-09-04
I found this in the Rizzoli bookstore and had to slit the shrinkwrap to see what the book was like. Then sat down in a soft chair to browse through it but after a half hour decided it made more sense to just buy it and read it at home. Not disappointed. The book covers everything in great detail - lots of text - with pictures of hotels from the Chilean Andes to London and Paris and New York. A "must have" for people interested in travel and hotels and architecture.
Book Description
The long-awaited follow-up to New Hotels presents a showcase of some of the most recent and inventive projects by the greatest names in hotel design.
Architecturally speaking, a hotel presents the opportunity to challenge the aesthetic uniformity that currently plagues the design of public places. The search for a misunderstood modernity has spawned a crop of dismal clones all over the planet, in no way lightening the dreary burden of endless preconceived ideas afflicting the traditional hotel industry.
Hoteliers have quickly recognized that ongoing changes in taste and needs within society call for a "live or die" approach to hotel service as a priority objective. The concept of "luxury" is continually evolving; it no longer means providing ostentatious spaces, full of glitz and chandeliers. Today's visitor wants to feel different simply because of where he or she is staying, which means that nowadays luxury is a matter of finding that sought after, special difference, such as cultural centers inside the hotel, 24-hour bars, personal assistants rather than receptionists, and varied types of cuisine. According to this vision, the hotels that are visited in New Hotels 3 are the ultimate expression of this new conception of luxury. Each one has its own personality born of merging innovation with local character. Without the former there is no progress; without the latter we run the risk of fading into that great morass of inconspicuous absurdity.

A splendid selection of new hotels, well photographed.......2006-11-29
All of us are familiar with the basic concept of the hotel, it's a collection of bedrooms for short term rental. And since the basic product is the same in all hotels, and the basic costs are about the same, what can you do to distinguish your property from the others in the next block, around the corner or across town.
One answer is design. And this book is a collection of photographs of hotel designs that are the ultimate in design. They are selected from new properties all around the globe but with the criteria in mind that they reflect the work of the best designers around, some well known, some newcommers. They all reflect what is best in current design which blends the tried and traditional with the new and local cultural input.
Often books such as these tend to reflect only the newest construction and giant properties. This one does not. There is one 'cafe with rooms' in Cape Town -- only 8 rooms. There are new buildings, but also buildings from the past that retain their outside appearance to fit into their community but which have been made luxurious inside.
A splendid selection of hotels, well photographed and beautifully printed.
Book Description
The three New Jersey beach resorts known collectively as The Wildwoods have recently been the subject of widespread notice for their unique concentration of mid-century commercial architecture. Known in The Wildwoods as Doo Wop, the style is mostly represented in the resorts' surviving motels, built between 1955 and 1970, and comes in a variety of forms: Modern, with jet-age glass walls; Vroom!, with thrusting pointed features; and Polynesian Pop, with thatched roofs and tiki torches. This fun, colorful book recounts the stories of the motels, describes their special features--from glorious neon signs to ubiquitous plastic palm trees--and covers the recent Neo-Doo Wop buildings that have risen in the wake of Doo Wop preservation.

Wildwood Crest Memories.......2007-08-26
If you were a kid in the 50's and 60's and spent your summer vacations in Wildwood Crest, NJ, you will love this book. It is chock full of pictures and stories of all the motels that lit up the summer nights with their creative and thematic neon signs. So, put on some Beach Boys or Four Tops music, and sit down with this delightful look back at one of the most colorful memories of your childhood or teen years. Thanks to Kirk Hastings for putting it together.
Wild About This Book.......2007-02-04
You don't have to know Wildwood to love this book, but when you finish it
you'll want to go. Hastings does more than write about the history and
architecture of this unique place, he brings its heart and soul alive. This
wonderfully kitschy resort has a fanatically loyal following - people come back
year after year for decades, staying in places built in the 50's and 60's
with names like the Astronaut, the Kona Kai,the Bonanza, the Ebb Tide,
the Singapore or the Tahiti. Just driving down the street was a lesson in
pop culture. DOO WOP MOTELS is fun, informative and obviously written
by someone who loves Wildwood. Unfortunately it's also one of the only
places to see these architectual treasures, since many have been
torn down in recent years in the name of "progress." The photographs of the
motels are beautiful...you'll feel like you're there sipping a drink
under a plastic palm, the "official" tree of the Wildwoods.

Book Description
The modern hotel not only offers a place to sleep, but, through its design, amenities and sense of theater, it also provides its guests with the ultimate escapist experience. This book combines architecture, interior design, photography, film, and works of art to show just how varied and dynamic international hotels can be today.
Examining over thirty real and conceptual examples, and complemented by an authoritative text and stunning photography, this book provides a compelling answer to the question, "What is the purpose of the modern hotel?" From The Venetian in Las Vegas, an outstanding example of the gambling capital's new generation of scenographic hotels, to the sail-shaped, "seven-star" Burj-al-Arab fantasy in Dubai, the designs are fully explored. The marketing of these hotels, and the cross-fertilization of hotel-design principles with those of other industries, is also covered. With the inclusion of plans and computer renderings, this book is essential reading for designers, architects, design-conscious travelers, and business people alike.

New Hotels for Global Nomads.......2003-03-14
Traditional hotels defy the reality of transience, offering a reassurance to weary travelers that they'll enjoy the familiar comforts of home. One pities anyone whose idea of domestic bliss is a Ramada Inn. This catalogue of an exhibition running through March 2 at the Cooper-Hewitt in New York, celebrates a fresh approach that puts chic ahead of comfort, and makes every guest realize she isn't in Kansas anymore. It intersperses W Hotels and the properties of Ian Schraeger and Andre Balasz with blue-sky projects that--if realized--might make you wish you had stayed home. That's especially true of one that was built--Jean Nouvel's hotel in Lucerne--where every ceiling is silkscreened with a movie still that could inspire nightmares. Maybe that Ramada wasn't so bad, after all. (Michael Webb is the book reviewer for LA Architect magazine.)

SHOULD BE TITLED JAPANESSE HOTEL DESIGN.......1999-09-09
ALL THE HOTELS IN THIS BOOK ARE IN JAPAN AND TENT TO BE BLAND IN THEIR DESIGN. THE TEXT IS PRIMARILY IN JAPANESSE AND THE EXPLANATIONS OF DESIGN CONCEPTS ARE VERTUALLY NONE EXISTANT. THE REPRODUCED PLANS AND SECTIONS ARE CLEAR BUT ARE SO SMALL THAT THEY ARE OF VERY LITTLE USE AS A REFFERENCE.
