Excellent Book!.......2007-08-03
This book was very helpful for me to determine what to say and how to convey my message professionally. I highly recommend this book to anyone in the workplace.
Management Book.......2007-07-15
Another recommendation from my management class. Very useful examples for various situations. It will be very helpful and one of my reference books.
Must have.......2006-12-24
I bought this while interviewing and now I keep it at work. I got the job I wanted with my top salary request. Useful, easy to understand and put into practice. Things you didn't realize about posture, facial expressions, simple phrasing, voice tone, etc. Great investment.
Is this a vocabulary review?.......2005-09-10
I was more interested in reading about different perspectives in the business environment, and the most effective way to communicate between different roles. I did not buy the book to memorize long lists of words and phrases - the "good" ones and the "bad" ones.
The lists really put me off. They do get the right concepts across, in their own inept way, but they aren't all-inclusive, and it only stands to reason that sometimes they'll be wrong, depending upon the situation. Sure words are powerful, but delivery is everything. Body language, attitude, and neutral words used in the wrong way can have the same effect as words on the "bad" list, so the lists hardly make sense. I think the only time I will use these lists will be when I want to mock the late 90's and early 2000's with tired, overused phrases that I really can't stand to hear anymore. This book is at such a superficial level that it isn't even about communication.
Excellent and essential book for everyone.......2004-10-07
I started teaching people to make PowerPoint presentations around 1992. Around 1995, I realized that many people were talking about themselves, so I suggested that the most important word they could use was "You." In 2003, I realized that people who wanted to be accepted by their audience should use the word "We." And then I picked up this book and read that the the three most important words in a business person's vocabulary were "we," "us," and "our." And that was on page eleven. At that point I was sold.
It's very easy to open your mouth and say your message in a way that alienates people. Very few people can negotiate difficult communications, but this book will help them do this. The book shows you words, phrases and body language to use and to avoid. It has numerous samples of conversations you can have with your fellow workers to put yourself in the best position.
The book covers all kinds of spoken business communications - the four largest sections include Getting a Job, speaking with your Supervisors, your Colleagues, and your Subordinates. Other groups are Prospective Clients, Current Clients, Handling Credit, Collection, and Customer Complaints, Vendors and Suppliers, and Lenders and Investors. In many cases you'll see the traps you can fall into.
You need to use this book with a little thought, in that the circumstances are usually similar to what you have to deal with, but not identical. But a few minutes' reading will change you from being a tongue-tied person to someone who achieves what you want.
I feel sorry for people who dismiss this and other similar books as "just common sense." I've known few people who possessed even a fraction of the skills shown in this book, and my own experience shows that I spent over ten years learning the information that appears in the beginning of the book.
Definitely a must-have, and a good book to build your general communications skills. And you'll stop coming away from meetings thinking, "I wish I could have said that better."
Product Description
Based upon 17 years of ongoing research involving more than 40,000 people from over 25 cultures, extensively field-tested, and adopted internationally by Fortune 500 companies, Human Dynamics? is a developmental system that demystifies the complexities of how people function and interact with one another. Human Dynamics presents a powerful framework for understanding the distinct ways in which we process information, learn, communicate, relate with one another, manifest stress, maintain well-being, and develop as human beings. At the heart of Human Dynamics are the three universal principles we all share in different capacities--mental, emotional, and physical--fundamental threads that cross culture, age, race, and gender to unify us all. As we learn to appreciate our commonalities and differences, we can use our unique gifts and apply new understanding to enrich our relationships, heighten "collective intelligence", communicate more effectively, work together more productively, enhance creativity, optimize team learning, and strengthen organizational performance. Actual accounts from major companies including Intel Corporation, Intermountain Healthcare System, and London Life Insurance Company document how Human Dynamics can optimize business relationships, organizational learning, teamwork, and communication.

A Proper Examination and Explanation of Human Action.......2001-01-24
If you have found most personality tests insignificant, unhelpful, or unrevealing, then perhaps this book is for you. Human Dynamics goes into much more depth and provides a greater understanding of human communication and actions than any simple personality test. While people can be placed into certain "dynamics," these dynamics are not nearly as restraining or stereotypical as personality tests tend to be. Rather than explaining one's personality, dynamics explain how groups of people tend to process information, not necessarily how aggressive, passive, or "likeable" they are. This book helped me in terms of personal discovery, and has also helped me understand why it always seemed that so many people "just never seemed to think like me."
Great book.......2000-07-09
Models to describe human personality are presented. Each model has it unique characteristics, its strengths and weaknesses. Each model will respond most effectively to certain modes of communications. This understanding of the different models presented will help a manager, a teacher, a student or just about anybody to understand themselves and people around them better. This will enable better communication of ideas and thoughts. Students will learn better and managers will be able to communicate more effectively with individuals. The models can be taken up to an organizational level. The applications of this book are far and wide. It is also simply and clearly written.
improving teamwork in your organisation,family & community.......1998-11-06
the first time that I have found an approach which looks at humans holistically and systemically. It is not a group of personality characteristics describing superficial behaviours, but a way of understanding and recognising internal processes particular to various human dynamics. It therefore goes much deeper than any other personality assessment technique I have seen and because of this can not be reduced to a paper and pencil test. However, the gift this approach brings is that it can be taught to everyday people and can provide access to better relationships and a greater understanding of how to release our judgement of others. A truly life changing book.
A most complete study of human diversity........1998-08-24
It is obvious that Dr. Seagal has worked extremely hard to confirm her research since 1979. Her style of writing is clear, concise and void of jargon. I found the content easy to absorb, understand and apply. Just the heightend awarness of how diverse we are has made a significant difference in how I work and related to people. I can see some real possibilities for applying in a business context.

Book Description
This timely compilation features 365 simple actions people can take to change the world, one day - or even five minutes - at a time. Each suggested action, in 16 "helping" categories, can be started and finished in a day or less, and none requires a cash donation. This Book Helped Me Help Others.......2006-05-02
"The Difference a Day Makes" is a terrific book. Karen has done a great job in communicating the importance of giving back every day. There were several new ways to give that I learned through reading this book. It is easy to read, understand and implement in your daily life. I would recommend it to anyone that wants to make a difference (and that should be everyone).
Idealism In Action.......2005-12-15
This is a nice book. It shows how simple everyday deeds can have a positive impact upon the world. Too often people who genuinely want to do something good for society honestly don't know how to go about achieving anything. This book gives great suggestions and points would-be philanthropists in the right direction.
The Difference... Helps You Make A Big Difference!.......2005-04-01
What a refreshing read - both thought provoking and resourceful, In today's "information overload" society, it's nice to have a handy resource to help me accomplish many of my personal volunteer goals without it being so much work. In fact, I'm going to buy copies for all my nieces and nephews as they are all charged with doing community service projects and, in my opinion, need to experience that "giving back," among other things, makes you feel good about yourself!
A kind of recipe collection for doing good.......2005-03-11
For some, compassionate feelings can overwhelm spare time and energy: readers with such a problem should consider The Difference a Day Makes : 365 Ways to Change Your World in Just 24 Hours a kind of recipe collection for doing good. Turn good intentions into powerful action with a guide which provides vast lists of good things which can be done in a few simple minutes or hours; from providing a resource list for a neighborhood to encouraging workplace and home use of the arts, and assisting an elder who has a pet.
Being the Difference..........2005-02-04
If, like me, you've been feeling that sending a check somehow isn't `enough', this is The resource that makes doing `more' easy.
If you're involved with inventing or organizing `service projects', it's a MUST. Definitely the handiest resource for getting your/ their imagination going anyone could possibly wish for.
And if you want to start making a difference before you even get the book, add copies for your local library and scout troops to your order. It's that great.
Book Description
An exploration of the influence of secret societies on the formative documents and symbols of the United States
• Reveals the Founding Fathers’ spiritual vision for America as encoded in the Great Seal
• Traces the influence of the Iroquois League of Nations upon the Constitution
• Exposes the deep connections the Founding Fathers had with the Freemasons and other secret societies
All children growing up in America learn who the Founding Fathers were. Most, however, never learn of the founders’ connections to the Freemasons, the Rosicrucians, and other esoteric orders. In Founding Fathers, Secret Societies Robert Hieronimus investigates these important connections and how their influence can be traced throughout our most significant national documents and symbols, especially the Great Seal. He reveals in detail how the reverse of the Great Seal--which appears on the back of the one-dollar bill--is a blueprint that conveys the secret destiny of America. By understanding the kabbalistic meaning of the Great Seal’s reverse, he shows how our current era presents unique opportunities for the fulfillment of our Founding Fathers’ spiritual vision.

America's True Founders.......2007-03-31
Revealing look at America's founding fathers, who adopted the Iroquois confederacy concept. For in depth masonic info (& America's hidden history), check out Secret Destiny of America and Brotherhood of the Sun.
Setting Up The Stage.......2006-10-25
I thought the first half of this book had a lot of information regarding are founding fathers and their individual accomplishments along with a shortly detailed discription of different secret societies. However, the second half of the book was very repititious with talks of psychology and the whole mysticism metaphysical b.s. that lead him to his own conclusions about the seal that most likely are not true because of the many examples of the possibilities that the seal can be broken down. There is a deeper purpose behind this book and it is setting us up to believe that a one world unified system will be a good thing, when the truth is that it won't be. We can't be too focused on the learning of one "self" because then we become "selfish" and that goes hand in hand with deep thinking, science, the metaphysical world and that just takes us away from who we should really be worshiping. I feel like I can't write anymore because people need to find out for themselves the real purpose of this book.
Fascinating and Compelling.......2006-09-19
I have not posted a review on [...], or for that matter, any other book-related website for several years, but felt I had to do so after reading Founding Fathers, Secret Societies. Dr. Robert Hieronimus, ably assisted by Laura Cortner, have given us a book for our times, and one of the most fascinating and compelling retellings of the founding of this country ever published. With true scholarship and first class story-telling, Hieronimus and Cortner establish for us the ethics and humanity upheld by the League of Iroquois, and the tremendous impact that their beliefs and actions had on our founding fathers. They go on to decode in detail the true meanings of the Great Seal of the United States and reassert the real vision behind the founding of our great nation. I don't read a lot of fiction, but I read this book with the attention and focus I usually reserve only for a true page-turner of a novel. And given the ever-deepening rifts in our current body politic, I came away from Founding Fathers profoundly moved and, yes, inspired. I can only add that no matter what your political predisposition may be, this remarkable volume offers us all an opportunity to reflect on the real story behind the birth of America, the true vision its founders had for the republic, and some practical thoughts on how we can all help it to get back on track. Robert Hieronimus and Laura Cortner have performed a great service in making this knowledge available to all of us, and I for one thank them for their efforts. A must read.

A TRUE JEWEL OF A BOOK.......2006-06-11
This book is a multidimensional discourse on the founding of a Nation whose history is veiled and obscured intentionally in secrecy. The author presents facts about the contributions of indigenous people in the founding of this Nation not told on any level of formal education. The author mentions there were Masonic symbols found in the wilderness of North America where no white man had ever ventured. These symbols were thought to be centuries old. By reading this book one can better figure how America fits into the national & international landscape from the very beginning. I like how the author breaks down the personal charts of the founders Franklin, Washington etc. Not a conspiracy book at all. I found it hard to put down once I started it. The notes and bibliography presents a vast amount of material for further research. I would highly recommend this book to the real seeker of truth, not for those who can not handle the truth. A good companion to this book would be "The Huevolution of Sacred Muur Science Past and Present" by Noble Timothy Myers-El
Disapointed.......2006-03-07
This book deals with some fairly rediculous topics. I'm not into mysticism or talisman's or that stuff, so perhaps I am biased.
It did provide a useful history of the 'masonic' symbol on the American one-dollar bill, which I enjoyed.
But Hieronimus puts forth far too much theory regarding supernatural powers for my taste.
Book Description
An expose of the dark and critical role secret societies play within the ruling families in America and their influence on American democracy, current events, and world history.
• Reveals the enormous influence secret societies still have on contemporary American life.
• Shows how the secret Masonic cells that smuggled in the democratic ideals inspiring the American Revolution also enabled the future elite of the new society to build huge fortunes.
Elite and secret societies have always been a major force in the history of Western civilization. The alliances formed in secret societies such as the Knights Templar, the Knights of Christ, and the Freemasons transcended patriotism and religious beliefs and had a powerful influence on the establishment of the United States of America. While these secret associations of merchants, smugglers, occultists, gamblers, spies, and slavers succeeded in freeing the United States from foreign domination, the dark side is that the elite used their secret connections to further their own wealth and power. These secret cells did not hesitate to sponsor the assassination of a president and even attempted to break up the union on several occasions when it was deemed expedient.
From the Sons of Liberty and the Essex Junto to the Ku Klux Klan, secret societies have played critical roles in building the fortunes of America's elite. Now Steven Sora reveals in alarming detail how secretive societies continue to wield power even today as organizations such as Yale's Skull & Bones unite America's modern ruling families as strongly as Masonic Lodges once connected the Astors, Livingstons, and Roosevelts. Their immense power and wealth allow this elite to control America to an even greater degree than the Templars once dominated Europe.

Fact or fantasy?.......2007-10-02
A previous reviewer has noted some examples Sora's "liberties" with facts. For me it was page 39 where we are informed that in 1919 the German Fleet, hiding in Scapa Flow, scuttled its ships rather than "surrender from its hiding place". Mr. Sora is clearly not aware that Scapa Flow was home to the British Grand Fleet, some forty Battleships, Cruisers, Dreadnoughts and Destroyers and that the German High Seas Fleet was not hiding there, but had, in fact, surrendered there.
When basic, well documented, facts are ignored or distorted, how can the rest of this work be taken seriously?
Badly Referenced Book.......2006-02-26
Sora starts off with a lot of stories on the Knights Templars, with much truth mixed in, but throughout he focuses on stories of mafia-like intrigue where graft, murder, and all manner of nefarious ways are attributed. Sora lays low when he finally gets to the Skull and Bones. But for the entirety of the book his secret societies have been blood-thirsty pirates, slave traders, and the worst of the worse.
Worst of all, with so very much of "his" history on every page, his documentation of his hundreds of evil attributions is sorely and sourly lacking. When he says in one of his many infamous lines that the KKK is a Masonic organization, a good historian would have referenced and proved that. Goodness, did Sora just purpose to link many of history's legends to one of history's worst secret societies. The KKK is a separate org like a lot of corrupt orgs with prejudicial and evil ways, and Sora forgot or purposed to leave out numerous other corrupt organizations more like the KKK than real Freemasonry. The end line for Sora, is that Freemasonry is in the main tied to many of America's elite for 300+ years, and all of the elite--he mentions many early and only a few today--are somehow corrupt.
If so many of America's elite have been and are as corrupt as Sora's long story goes, well then, there would never have been an America founded, not like the one the Declaration and Constitution established in 1776+ or like we have today. The greatest deficit and piece of incredible license is how Sora expects his readers to take in his broad stroking theme: America was founded by evil pirates and continues to be controlled by pirates to this day.
Sora did not mention, quote, or reference a single Freemasonry scholar, not even those scholars of Masonry who are "not" Masons, like famed non-Mason historian Jasper Ridley. Any history like Sora's that links so many hundreds of pages to Freemasonry (making them "all" evil) is adolescent when it ignores or purposes to hide from Freemason scholars such as Allen E. Roberts, William r. Denslow, W.L. Wilmshurst, and Alphonse Cerza, Art DeHoyos, and S. Brent Morris. Without out a single reference to the well-referenced works of Allen E. Roberts alone, Sora is adrift in his own pirate fantasies. Without the mighty works of Denslow's "10,000 Famous Freemasons" and Cerza's mighty "Anti-Masonry," Sora is a little story teller with rocks in his mouth.
Not once in 300+ pages did Sora mention the cruciality of "honor" or "morality," and yet the Knights Templar and Freemasonry for 300+ years have been all about honor. You have to look over, pass over, and ignore how "honor" and "morality" have been an integral part of all of Freemasonry, published in the monitors by all of the Grand Lodges worldwide and on nearly every page of thousands of Freemasonry scholars for 300+ years.
What is truly scary about Sora's skull-and-bones' covered book is that it is selling, like a pirate booty being auctioned off to an innocent audience unawares of Sora's home port. See www.preciousheart.net for more bibliography on Freemasonry.
Sincerely, Dr. M.G. Maness

Let down.......2005-04-12
The author starts off telling us that Skull and Bones membership essentially guarantees a world of privilige, power and wealth. By the end we find out it is not much more than a club whose members do some weird things. An OK read but very repetitive. Yale likes it traditions, we don't need 100 pages to tell us that, 10 would have sufficed.
BE CAREFUL OF THIS ONE.......2004-08-29
I am fearful that the historical accuracy of some of the statements made by this author are in question. I found the work to be rather poorly footnoted and some of the author's conclusions quite questionable. I also found that the work was quite repetative and that much of what the author had to tell us could have been presented in about one fourth of the pages actually used. After reading the book, I certainly would not try passing myself off as an expert on "secret societies" and their impact on our present time. Do some home work on your own before reading this one, and as I said, becareful of this one!
Book Description
There must have been a Civilization One: a highly advanced precursor to what is currently the earliest recognized civilization. That’s the astounding revelation from a powerful duo of writers that includes the author of the bestselling The Hiram Key. Christopher Knight and Alan Butler’s startling conclusion comes from their quest to crack the mystery of the ancient "megalithic yard"—an incredibly precise unit of measurement that’s based on a deep understanding of the solar system. It seems beyond the comprehension of the supposedly unsophisticated people of Stone Age Britain, and yet not only is it visible in the thousands of megalithic structures built in Britain and France, but this measurement keeps recurring throughout nature and science. The implications of the authors’ breakthrough discovery go far beyond the idea of a super-science or prehistory: they indicate a grand plan that will have far-reading theological ramifications.

An Important Chapter in Our History.......2007-10-06
I bought this book because the topic intrigued me. I was both relieved and pleased to read it as the information provides a rare new glimpse at our pre-modern history. I've never read information like this before, and I've read many, many books in this genre. The book is very well written, very easy to read (not too technical and a good writing style). The author is very conscious of carefuly backing up research claims so as to avoid appearing as a lunatic. All in all, an interesting, original, well documented work that should be part of the library of anyone interested in ancient Earth history.
Intriguing.......2006-04-21
I have to admit I have never read a book that covered the subject of measurements used by early civilizations that come to such incredible conclussions. If the authors are right, prehistoric people knew much more about astronomy than we give them credit for. These guys definately think outside the box.
simply a WOW.......2006-02-01
have read lots of book in this genre... hat's off to these guys... a masterwork that gives one pause to reconsider our place in history and how humankind perpetually thinks we are smarter than our ancestors... strong evidence for advanced and integrated thinkers long long ago... inspiring to say the least.
BO-RING!!!.......2005-11-07
I am an avid reader and love topics dealing with historic mysteries, as well as other various types of fiction and non-fiction. The writing in this book just plain sucks. It is laborious to read, and makes a fascinating subject matter completely uninteresting.
In addition to poor authoring, there is the matter of the poor scientific basis. Every other point they attempt to make is stated as 'we find this to be self evident' or 'we found it reasonable to assume that'. By all rights, circumstantial evidence should have been enough to convict O.J. However, in this case, then end result is an odor similar to that of the dairy farms south of Sacramento.
Our mysterious ancestors.......2005-07-18
This fascinating book of alternative history examines the evidence of weights and measures and comes to the conclusion that there must have been an advanced culture in prehistory. The structures of the Stone Age were built by using a very precise unit of measurement, called the megalithic yard. The book explores the science behind prehistoric units, their mathematical origin and means of reproduction, and proves that these are linked to the dimensions of the solar system.
The reader must have a basic knowledge of arithmetic but overall the book is an easy read and very revealing. Amongst the topics discussed are writing, Egypt, Sumeria, the Minoan foot, solar and sidereal days, pendulums and the importance of the planet Venus. It turns out that the British Pound and Pint are both derived from ancient measurements. The units of the hour, minute and second were developed more than 4000 years ago, from the movements of the moon.
The text also encompasses subjects like the harmony of the spheres, Sumerian degrees and the calendar, and explains that the metric system is not a recent invention. There is a section on Thomas Jefferson and his achievements; this great man apparently realized that he was rediscovering parts of a very ancient system.
Amongst the most captivating sections is the chapter on music and light. There is a definite correspondence between the rotating mass of our planet and human music. Also, megalithic mathematics produces its own musical structure. The authors conclude that there must have been an advanced people who instructed the rest of the world in science and technology. They also refer to the Masonic concept of the Great Architect of the Universe.
There are seven appendices that include further information on earth days and the megalithic year, megalithic music, the Phaistos Disc, the amazing barley seed, and the connection between megalithic principles and Freemasonry. The colour plates include approximately 20 full colour photographs and there are many black and white illustrations throughout the text. The book concludes with an index.
I also recommend Lost Civilisations Of The Stone Age by Richard Rudgley, Stone Age Soundtracks by Paul Devereux, and Forbidden Archaeology by Michael Cremo and Richard Thompson.

Sensational Premise; Unresolved.......2005-09-03
William Still starts his interesting work with the sensational premise that, during the latter days of the Nixon administration, there was a move afoot to carry off a military coup d'etat of the government of the United States. He follows this startling premise with a really worthwhile, though not comprehensive, rendition of conspiratorial history. This part of well written, but is missing much that is extremely relevant to the overall issue. Still then concludes, returning the original sensational premise, and relating, inexplicably, that it may or may not have been true. Despite this serious flaw, the book is generally well written and useful.
your journey to paranoia starts here.......2004-12-21
This book is wickedly entertaining, and seems to make a lot of sense, although, giving a few months of time to think about the material made me realize that it was little more than good entertainment. Conspiracy theories are good fun and can make you snap out of boredom and skirt the boundary of paranoia, which is a testament to how dull our lives can be. This book may have you looking at everyone you see in a funny way for a while, but in the end it should be viewed as mere entertainment. Some of this junk may be true, and there are abundant cross references to the material, but this guy's whole mission of sending an alarm seems to be just a vice for his own self-aggrandizement. Good fun, but there is better material on this subject out there.
Fascinating, Frightening, and Factual !!.......2004-11-27
Still's New World Order: The ancient plan of secret societies will make a great reading for the curious and brave mind that's willing to explore and learn the facts about the evolution of the elitist societies. Many of these secret societies have gone through a major metamorphosis that has led them to become legitimate entities and organizations. These organizations have been ruling every aspect of our lives for many years. Just like in organized crime, these powerful families even tend to intermarry among each other to strengthen the bond of power and wealth among themselves. They are the invisible rulers of the world that make the policies which in return bring them more money and power. You will learn in this book how it all started and why it will never end. This is not a book about evil, or about a doomsday scenario, but it is a book about man's desperate quest, obsession, and addiction to power, control, and aspiration to become god. The one world order (globalization is another benign name for it) has already happened and no one can stop it. The elites have facilitated the wedding of the global corporations to the political world, thereby creating a conquering hybrid machine which has tremendously succeeded in subjugating every corner of the globe economically and militarily if needed. This book will provide the reader with enlightening concepts that might be so shocking to believe. Still's research is disturbing and unsettling but very well documented and mostly accurate.
Interesting Book.......2004-10-14
The author of this book has a definite perspective regarding religion and while I don't agree with his view 100%, I still found his writing to be very interesting and enjoyable. I learned things I definately didn't know prior to reading this book. It opened my eyes on a number of world issues and specific US occurences. This is a book worth reading. Great overview of the subject (NWO, CFR, TC, Bilderbergers, etc.).
Worst Scholarship Possible!.......2004-08-23
The author writes this book from a fundamentalist biblical perspective, which makes it like trying to argue the bible with someone who continuously quotes it out of context. The antique references show the author's bias. On reading the second chapter descriptions of "secret societies" a person who knows Egyptian history and religion cannot help but feel a twinge of pain at the outright falsity of almost everything he writes there. The same goes for the brief blurb on Gnosticism as well as most of the rest of it. Find a book that has a more balanced view of history and religious ideas and skip this one. If you consider your time of any value at all then reading this book definitely wastes it.

The best basic overview of Cell ministry I am aware of........1999-05-18
This is a very easy to read book that lays out the basics of cell ministry. Some of the diagrams may seem too simplistic or even kind of seventies-ish, but they are understandable. Most of the cell ministry books are written from a charasmatic church backround and have parts that presuppose a church where tongues are used as a part of the church ministry. This book does not assume that, and can be useful for leaders of churches that do not practice the use of tongues in their ministry. Also I think the author does an excellent job of show the difference between a small group and a cell. One warning, if you give this out to leaders as an overview of cell ministry you need to debrief them as to your specific cell meeting agenda. As chapter six gives a specific agenda and time schedule, some leaders may panic if this is not consistant with what you are doing or desire to do. Again, excellent overview of cell ministry.

Book Description
• An examination of the interactions of the Christian Knights Templar and their Muslim counterparts, the Assassins, and of the profound changes in Western society that resulted.
• Restores the reputation of the secret Muslim order of the Assassins, disparaged as the world's first terrorist group.
• Dispels many myths about the Knights Templar and provides the most incisive portrait of them to date.
A thousand years ago Christian battled Muslim for possession of a strip of land upon which both their religions were founded. These Crusades changed the course of Western history, but less known is the fact that they also were the meeting ground for two legendary secret societies: The Knights Templar and their Muslim counterparts, the Assassins.
In The Templars and the Assassins: The Militia of Heaven, occult scholar and secret society member James Wasserman provides compelling evidence that the interaction of the Knights Templar and the Assassins in the Holy Land transformed the Templars from the Pope's private army into a true occult society, from which they would sow the seeds of the Renaissance and the Western Mystery Tradition. Both orders were destroyed as heretical some seven hundred years ago, but Templar survivors are believed to have carried the secret teachings of the East into an occult underground, from which sprang both Rosicrucianism and Masonry. Assassin survivors, known as Nizari Ismailis, flourish to this day under the spiritual leadership of the Aga Khan. Wasserman strips the myths from both groups and penetrates to the heart of their enlightened beliefs and rigorous practices, delivering the most probing picture yet of these holy warriors.

A well researched compilation of other books with an interesting resulting theory........2007-05-01
This book is a very good broad historical account of the templars and the assassins. It is an overview of each of the secretive orders and the effects that each had on the times in which they existed; the crusades. Wasserman then draws from these two societies to create his theory of the creation of secularism and the rise of occult groups present today.
Wasserman is a member of an occult group, "Ordo Templi Orientis", founder of one of their "lodges", and a follower of Aleister Crowley. I make note of this because the genesis of this book was to prove the point in time at which occultism began. Wasserman argues that the Templars and the Assassins at some point cross-pollinated to create a new sect of religious thinking; what Mr. Wasserman labels as "esoteric truth" that resulted in the "development of the Western Mysteries", his personal area of religious or secular belief.
That being said, the book is a very good primer for any beginner on the subject of Templars, Assassins or the time of the Crusades. A definite must read for anyone that is beginning their journey in to the past of the warriors of the crusades and the political and religious backdrop that created their fates.
If you are a student of the subject or a history junkie (as I am), this may be a bit sophomoric and overly concise. That is to say that Mr. Wasserman did do a great job of researching many important works regarding the 2 groups but it is all referenced from other works and only his final thesis (that the combination of eastern and western religions created modern occultism) is original; his bibliography is impressive and anyone that wants to truly understand in depth history of this time would be well served by reading the majority of the books in the bibliography.
But, in the end, if you are looking for new information, this is not the book for you. However, if you are searching for new theories, especially those which are not mainstream (specifically those related to occultism) this book would be a good place to get theories based on facts.
I did enjoy reading the book as I have read too many studies on the groups, especially the Templars , and this places everything in a slightly different light. The final section of the book is a summation of Mr. Wasserman's opinions, his thesis, regarding the interaction of the two groups and the resulting age of enlightenment that produced his religious order as well as many others.
Do yourself a favor and check the bibliography and grab some of those books. Mr. Wasserman does reference these books and acknowledges the importance of the works as his sources for his information.
Again, if you are new to the subject, jump on in and enjoy; and then move on to the meat and potatoes of the subject matter. But be wary of the final section as it is more propaganda than fact, more personal theory than thesis.
If you are a Templar or Assassin history junkie (as I am), you can probably skip this and move on to another study of the groups, the time period, or the geography of the crusades and the forces that led to the ongoing war between islam and christianity.
So, to sum up: A good read, well researched and informative for anyone who is new to the topic; be cautious with the final section where many conclusions are drawn based on Mr. Wasserman's faith in his occultist beliefs.
Simplisitic Research.......2005-10-25
My interest in Wasserman's book stemmed from the background research I did for the first English translation of ALAMUT by Vladimir Bartol -- an Eastern European novel based on the life and legend of Hasan ibn Sabbah, the original "assassin."
I can't speak on behalf of Wasserman's "Templars" research, but if his "assassins" research is indicative, I'd suggest that this book offers nothing new in the way of scholarship. A quick look at his "assassin" sources reveals that he was exclusive in his use of secondary sources, most of them dating from 1955 and later, including works by Farhad Daftary, Bernard Lewis, and Marshal Hodgson. For the most part, Wasserman stays clear of the myths surrounding the assassins, and in a few cases debunks them, but if you have read any of the writers Wasserman relied on for his research, chances are you won't find much new here.
Very Nice Overview.......2005-02-08
Very enjoyable reading. Most other books seem to be a little biased on either the christian or muslim side, this book achieves a good balance.
All things new under the sun, this is not.......2004-10-02
Many who are interested in the Middle Ages, the Crusades, and the Templars, wonder just what influences the Templars may have been exposed to while serving in "Outremer". Were they influenced by their exposure to Islam and other asian religions? What would they have learned? Who would they have learned from, and how? This is why I bought the book. All the others I have read to date deal, neatly, with the established history of the order. I thought, after seeing the title of this book, that I might, at last, get some new information concerning these mysterious questions. I was wrong.
Mr. Wasserman regurgitates old historical data in what some might term terse or concise. I would say clipped. The same old information people have already read, pasted together in short, boring chronology. There seems to be no new research exposed here. He does touch on the questions of mystical influence, but only at the end, and only briefly, essentially saying that these questions do exist and it is possible that the knights were influenced by their experiences. Wow!
If you have read more than one book on the Crusades, you will not read anything new here. It is essentially two stories, one of the Templars, and the other of the Assassins.
I found it dry and unimaginative.
Glad I looked twice.......2003-10-31
This book was sitting on a table surrounded by post 9/11 geopolitical armchair analysts' books and I am so glad I bothered to pick it up. The amount of scholarly work and lack of bias are evident in Wasserman's assessment of the historical implications of Christianity and Islam's births and growths. This thesis, the influence that the East has had on the West is one that is often scoffed at, today. This book is rife with factual details that condense to form a sensible puzzle in contrast to other books who push a reader into adopting an extreme position (that of the expert author's). It was especially refreshing to read a book that complies so well with the blade of reason. Highly recommend this book to any individual who bothers to question.
