Book Description

The inspired illumination of any given space can amplify its aesthetic impact and take it from the pedestrian to the sublime. And, for years, this excellent reference has guided architects and designers in the achievement of lighting artistry. Enhanced with more than one hundred new illustrations, Interior Lighting for Designers, 4th Edition takes readers step-by-step through the lighting design process as it covers lighting terminology, perception, general design strategies, and much more.

Revised to address recent advances in lighting technology and practice, this edition also covers new equipment as well as revised specifications for existing equipment. Color photos of various design applications beautifully illustrate project concepts. Little wonder that this work has been identified as one of the "key preparation references" for design professionals facing their Lighting Certified examination.

4 out of 5 stars Very good book!.......2007-03-09

This is a great lighting design book, lots of graphical explanations, lots of useful information, a must-buy for any kind of interior designer!

2 out of 5 stars Not Good Introductory Textbook Material .......2005-05-22

This is a required book for an introductory lighting class I'm taking. Since we are solely relying on this book and it isn't supplemented with lecture material, I find that, without familiarity with lighting terminology and concepts, it is very difficult to understand -- very cryptic with the seemingly overused language of the field. While the author may be very knowledgeable, I feel the book is not very well written and the target audience is, perhaps, not intended to be, essentially, the layman. I don't find the organization of ideas and concepts to be clearly laid out or communicated well and, as they unfold, and I come to understand what the author is trying to say, wonder why it was made so difficult -- is that all he means, geesh and why didn't he tell me that earlier. It would be easier to understand the general concept of things first, even in plain English perhaps, and then go on to a more technical description to learn the language of the field and get the details. Just seems to make simple things very complicated, especially with the language, flow of ideas, and phrasing.

I also find a lot of the graphic figures and photo examples need some clarification or more details. A picture's supposed to be worth a thousand words, not be cryptic and time-consuming to understand.

Sorry, I would not recommend this for students who are not primed first. Especially the younger ones.

5 out of 5 stars Great teacher.......2004-03-30

While I was studying Interior Design at Parsons a number of years ago, I had Gary Gordon as a Lighting Design Instructor. He was by far one the best teachers that I had. He is very knowledgeable and has the unique ability to easily communicate the many aspects of both design and lighting. I highly recommend any publication he has authored.

4 out of 5 stars Very good book for novices........1997-07-07

The book begins with an inspirational and somewhat simplistic insight into lighting design. Simply as a study of lighting contrasts. While this is a very important aspect of LD, it is by far one of many concepts a professional must use. The book refers to many technical aspects of lighting without giving any "meat" or more in depth information, which I would have enjoyed. If you are new to LD or are an architect or engineer who has little experience with lighting, it is a very good lauching point. If you are technically knowledgable about lighting and want some inspiration, read chapter 1 and the last chapter on Design for concepts

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for Professionals.......2007-08-13

I bought this manual to help me ugrade from Maya 7.0 to Maya 8.5 and it's become my most prized and relied upon resource. Every tutorial I've gone through has worked perfectly (no missing steps or errors so far), Mr. Lanier writes coherently & well, and each new topic is presented in a straightforward and matter-of-fact fashion.

As a professional Video Game Artist, I've reccommended this manual to our enitire company of 300, and will continue to do so to everyone else. In the past, decent documentation on the finer points of Maya has been elusive, but Mr. Lanier has saved us! I will be adding his other manuals to my library.

5 out of 5 stars Wow.......2007-03-09

This Book is just Perfect...it tells you EVERYTHING about the Lighting and the Texturing.... if you want to learn about that 2 things... Buy This Book NOW

5 out of 5 stars A Maya book absolutely worth owning.......2007-03-08

Lee Lanier has approached the writing of his latest book with the same intensity, accuracy, and zeal that he demonstrated when he was my teacher at De Anza College several years ago. He has an encyclopedic knowledge of Maya, and of Maya lighting in particular. The material is laid out methodically and in great detail. Lee never glosses over a topic, but goes in depth to provide insight into the theory behind every concept. I highly recommend this fine book.

5 out of 5 stars Great resource, lots of good information.......2007-01-04

I've read a number of Maya books over the past few years. Most focus on basic-intermediate usage. Lanier's book is a great resource for learning advanced tips and theory, with many color pictures. This is the best book I've found about using Hypershade nodes to build professional materials.

I particularly liked that the included DVD contains Maya project files for every scenario pictured in the book (although most of the cool models are not included, just simple geometric primitives). These project files contain great setups comparing different lighting and rendering settings. I highly recommend this to anyone interested in learning intermediate-advanced Maya topics.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent !.......2006-11-18

I've been reviewing several books on this topic, and this one's a winner! It's specific and useful and goes into great detail about nodes in Hypershade and how to use them that the manuals don't.

If you're serious about reaching an advanced level with your Maya rendering skills, then this book is for you. Just buy it now, and you can thank me later! In terms of lighting design and the esthetic side of things, I also like the book Digital Lighting and Rendering, 2nd Edition by the Pixar artist Jeremy Birn, I think the idea to buy both of these together is an unbeatable combination for any serious Maya user!

5 out of 5 stars A most excellent book.......2007-08-25

4 out of 5 stars Residential Lighting - A Practical Guide.......2006-03-03

This is an excellent practical and technical book for learning about and designing lighting for a home. It's aimed at the professional, which I appreciate as an intern architect. Part of my job is to design sophisticated lighting schemes for custom homes, which takes a lot of experience and knowledge. This book has really helped me to pinpoint the different kinds of lighting needed for each space and how to place it and specify it in a professional way for the greatest effect. Most architects take years to learn this, but I'm getting a crash course by having this resource. It's not a fluffy coffee table book, it's a technical manual that teaches HOW to properly understand and design lighting for a residence. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource.......2006-02-25

This is the best book that I have seen on the topic. The practical advice is well balanced with technical information. A must-have for any Designer's Resouce Library.

5 out of 5 stars Lighting secrets revealed!.......2005-11-29

As a designer, I can't say enough good things about Randall Whitehead's Residential Lighting, A Practical Guide. This is his follow up to his wonderful Lighting Up! A Practical Guide which has been a staple of the design community for seven years. All the best parts of the earlier book have been retained with the addition of more than 200 photos in both color and black & white.

The chapters have really been packed with up-to-the-minute information about many of the new technologies that are now becoming the norm, such as light emitting diodes (LEDs). There are also a whole new series of enlightening sections in the back of the book with great tips on how to run a design business, how to get published and how to deal with clients.

Randall's way of writing is very entertaining and I feel it has revitalized the often dry category of textbooks. His funny, casual method of doling out information really helps make this book a pleasure to read. His energy and humor is infectious as he lets readers in on the secrets and practices of good lighting for homes and gardens. What also sets this book apart from other texts on lighting is how he approaches the subject first from the aesthetic side then gradually lets the reader in on the technical reasons how lighting design works.

This is an inspirational reference guide for all aspiring designers... as well as for established design professionals like me. Even savvy homeowners will latch onto this book as the insider's guide to the secrets of great lighting.

5 out of 5 stars A lighting technique that works!.......2005-04-22

I've read a few other lighting books over the years but found that Whitehead's approach is superior for creating moods in rooms. My wife and I prototype interiors in our home and the results from "A Practical Guide" have been outstanding. We move and change the lighting with temporary luminaires and various wattages to explore the various possibilities before using them in real designs for clients.

Beware - after buying into his concepts you will be frustrated by the lighting almost everywhere you go.

Book Description

SCENE DESIGN AND STAGE LIGHTING, Eighth Edition, continues its tradition of being the most detailed and comprehensive text available in the scenic and lighting design and technology fields. Much of the scenery design and technology section has been re-worked with an emphasis on modern technology. Changes in the lighting section reflect current practice and technology. The authors have placed an emphasis on collaboration in all sections of the new text. "Designers at Work" interviews with professional lighting and scenery designers are a new addition to the Eighth Edition. In addition, the entirely re-written section on sound for the theatre reflects the digital age we live and work in.

Working backstage? Asked by your local community theatre to pitch in doing props? Foolishly said, "Of course I can build a tree(Silly fool only God can)! Here are the helpful hints and clues that will point you in the right direction without looking like a total fool. Design, construction, lights and sound- Oren Parker has it all. This latest edition is my third copy! They just keep getting better and better. This "rumor" best explains the abilities of one of the authors. A colleague once related the story in which Oren Parker showed up in the university scene shop in a three piece suit, painted a full back drop and walked out without a drop of paint on the suit. I'd be interested in knowing how true this is but not any less impressed with how informative this book has been for me. Well worth the exorbitant price.

5 out of 5 stars Invaluable guide for novices and professionals.......2000-04-06

I can't tell you how often I've found myself saying "I'm a carpenter, not a designer!" when asked to design a set. I've always muddled through, but now, with this book in hand, I've found 100% more confidence in my designs. Invaluable for the lighting designer who wants to better understand scenic design, and for the scenic designer who wants to understand lighting design. Buy it!

I'm a lighting design major in college, and no matter what I take a class in, Gillette's book is the standard must have for all tech (and acting) majors. It's a requirement for stage tech 1, and then is used again through out the college carreer, and I have heard people even refrence it after they graduate. The best places to start for new techies are this book, and the 'backstage handbook'

Here is the first comprehensive guide to all aspects of modern fan technology. The book takes you through the design, selection, maintenance, and repair of fans used in a wide range of applications and industries, including airfoils...centrifugal fans...mixed-flow fans...roof ventilators...cross-flow blowers...regenerative blowers... and more. You'll find information on fan codes, standards, and specificationsÑplus complete details on fan testing, physical laws affecting fan performance, ventilation requirements, and symbols and conversion factors.

3 out of 5 stars Fan Handbook: Selection, Application, and Design.......2007-06-08

A good addition to other fan design books but incomplete by itself as it lacks any real guidelines on the mechanical design.
It should include more on impeller stressing (blade bending & hoop stress), shaft critical speed and impeller resonance.
There are a few anomalies but also some good flow information.
The axial and centrifugal flow design data is good except for centrifugal fan casings which really only covers wide, high volume designs. If you are looking for detailed centrifugal casing design for high pressure blowers then look elsewhere (I am still looking).
The chapter on system resistance is very informative. The other sections on fan applications and the different fan types is also very good.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad, but not over the fence, either........2002-02-26

As a basic primer on fan concepts, this is a good book. It also serves as a sort of non-engineer's guide to fan design and allows someone with very little knowledge or experience create a fan design of some reasonable worth.

Unfortunately, I was looking for a bit more of an in depth aerodynamic study and have yet to find a piece of literature that I like. I understand that many of the older books on cascade aerodynamics are quite good, but they are no longer in publication, and this didn't really satisfy my interests.

Particularly annoying to me is the lack of derivation of the methodology in the fan design section. Some basic magic formulas are given and then tied together with some basic velocity diagrams to yield a fan blade design methodology.

4 out of 5 stars An execellent, practical work; worth owning........1998-08-02

The "Fan Handbook" is the finest book yet written on fan design, implementation, use, and trouble shooting. The book a delight to read and use. Mr. Bleier, unlike many techno-types, is fine writer (and I suspect re-writer) and a careful idea organizer. The work has many, many professionally shot photographs and is fully illustrated. There are no crude computer generated drawings anywhere! It's well indexed and heavily cross-referenced.

The book's slant is to the practical and explicitly avoids calculus, but it is by no means elementary. Any person with high school algebra and trig can understand the well-presented equations and solve all the case study problems with a little effort. Math phobes needn't be put off; the book is not "too" mathematical.

The only thing that prevented me from awarding five stars to this terrific book was an important omission. No mention is made of specialized fans for cooling towers. I had especially hoped to learn mo! re about design requirements for static presure regain/velocity recovery fan stacks for very large fans. But this shortcoming should not disuade any cooling tower engineers from purchasing this book, since all of the principles discussed do fully apply to cooling towers. END

David Sonnenschein's book is my "go-to" book for not only the quality of information that he presents but the interesting way that it is told. This book is an excellent read besides being extremely informative. I find that these are the best to assign to my students as many texts are just that: texts - dry and dull. David Sonnenschein presents the information herein in a delightful way and has many excellent tips on the overall shape of sound.

5 out of 5 stars A great book, full of examples and creativity.......2007-01-30

I have to thanks deeply Mr D. Sonnenschein for this incredible book. I enjoyed it so much. This book helped me so much understanding the 'how' of sound effects and ambiences in movies. For sure a good choice and a good book.
I just can give an advice: buy it!!! I am a sound designer in Spainn and I consider this book a must.
Thanks David!

5 out of 5 stars Great book to teach with!.......2006-01-26

I use this book in my Sound Design class at the University of Saint Francis. It is a great foundation upon which you can build confidence in your inexperienced students just by having them read the book! Also it helps make sense out of the confusion of directors dealing with sound and audio crew. This book has made my teaching job a lot easier and the students of my class a lot more saavy in sound design.
This book also would be excellent for anyone interested in the sound of movies and TV. AND it is essential reading for any Director (any GOOD Director, that is) Thanks David Sonnenschein for writing it!

3 out of 5 stars Good general photography book, misleading title, horrible layout.......2007-08-31

While the author makes mention of the word "digital" throughout the book, the majority of the information contained within does not deal exclusively with digital photography. The author himself even admits in his own preface of the book that most of his friends didn't understand why the book title states "For Digital Photographers Only". If you're a photographer who already have a good grasp of general photography concepts and are looking to gain digital-specific knowledge, this is NOT the book for you. You will find maybe 2 pages worth of useful information on digital photography. Maybe. But if you're looking for a general photography book that covers everything, this is not a bad start. The page layout of the book is worse than average. You often have to turn the page to find a reference or comparison photo, making the reading slow and unpleasant. I would've given it one more star if the title had read "Exposure and Lighting For ALL Photographers".

5 out of 5 stars A "must have".......2007-07-28

I have been using digital point & shoots for several years, and finally decided that it was time to invest in a digital SLR. Among other issues, I was frustrated with the shutter lag. So I made the plunge and my shutter lag problem went away. However, everything comes with some baggage. Now I had all these other capabilities and controls that I didn't really know what to do with. The camera manual was pretty basic; it told you how to control the camera functions, but not what their purpose was or why you would want to do that. So I got a supplement book (Magic Lantern) that did a pretty good job of explaining the functions, ie, what they did and had a little bit of the why you might want to do it.
Nonetheless, I was still primarily using the auto functions and I didn't think I was getting anywhere close to the value that my new camera could deliver. What to do next?
Looking through the photo instruction books, I saw some good reviews for this one. I didn't know if it would be particularly helpful, but it did sound interesting. It turns out that was a good, and very lucky, decision. From the first page through the end, the book was helpful instruction. More than anything, it explained the "why" of things in digital photography. The other books mainly told me about the camera; this one told me about photographs. All through it were "aha" moments when the authors pointed out problems that I experienced all the time and didn't know what to do about; then they showed how to handle it. For example, I prefer pictures in outdoor settings but peoples faces seldom come out as I want them. Simple fixes like moving into shade, changing white balance, adding a simple reflector, changing camera position or head position; no fuss kinds of stuff, made big differences in the photos.
Speaking of photos, the pictures in the book are great. They do a wonderful job of demonstrating the effects of the various elements.
I suppose that more experienced photographers would not get a lot out of the book. But for someone like me, it was perfect. It showed me how to really get more value out of the digital SLR capabilities. I no longer use the auto setting and my photos are much more appealing. Plus it's fun to experiment and learn how to apply the principles from the book.
Highly recommend it for people that want to move past "point & shoot".

5 out of 5 stars Great Book! Full of useful information, very well written........2007-05-08

I have read alot of photography books lately, and I would have to say that this is one of the most useful and well written. If you are just starting out in photography or are at the intermediate level of photography, this book is a must have. It covers all the bases, and explains each topic in a way that you can understand. Several other books have covered the same topics and still left me as confused as before I read them. Exposure and Lighting for Digital Photographers Only explained the topics in a very concise and easily understood way, and left me walking away from the book with the confidence and knowledge I was looking for. I highly reccomend this book for anyone looking to learn and understand photography.

5 out of 5 stars Great practical book for intermediate level.......2007-03-31

This is an excellent book for developing the practical skills of exposure and lighting. It is readable, clear, well-presented, wide-ranging, succinct, and full of well-chosen example images to illustrate the techniques described in the text.

Although I have read many books on photography, this book really increased my awareness of light and my skill in handling exposure. My photographs have improved, my photography is more confident and enjoyable, and I find myself looking at the world in a new way.

I found this book much more helpful than books like Understanding Exposure: How to Shoot Great Photographs with a Film or Digital Camera (Updated Edition) which I found too vague to be instructive. Compared with my favorite general reference on photography, The New Manual of Photography, this book naturally has much more detailed coverage of lighting and exposure, but also has more relevant information about exposure in digital photography.

There are some very minor errors in technical detail. For example flash power is measured in watt-seconds, not watts per second. And surely it is not so hard to explain that f/8 means one-eighth of the focal length! These are minor quibbles in an otherwise excellent book.

5 out of 5 stars Info You Need for Better Photos.......2007-03-30

I have been a semi photographer for years (Canon, Pentax, Contax SLR's) and moved up to a Fuji S2 digital SLR for work (engineering, construction, etc.) Lighting is the most important factor and this book works for film or digital. Very good overview and the best practical, usable tips and instructions I've seen. Lots of good examples in every type of lighting, setting, and condition. Even I can understand it.

5 out of 5 stars Moisture Control Handbook review.......2005-10-14

This book is great for explaining to our clients the challeges they are having, the way to prevent and a great picture how it should have been done.

It is in simple english for anyone to understand.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent practical reference.......1996-12-30

This is an excellent introductory overview of practical problems and solutions relating to moisture control in buildings. The diagrams are outstanding! The emphasis is on moisture problems and solutions in low-rise framed buildings. My only disappointment is that the underlying physics are not described and that predictive techniques are not presented. An excellent reference book for builders, and a must read for anyone involved with trouble shooting, inspecting, insuring, repairing, and restoring building envelopes
