Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Very Useful and Informative.......2003-11-14

Review: This book attempts to describe the major fields in industrial/organizational psychology. For a textbook designed for use in an introductory-level course, it does its job fairly well.
This book is very easy to use, and utilizes most of the more common aids to direct the reader to the most-salient information in each chapter, such as using bold-face for definitions and breaking the chapter up into several sections. It also provides a tremendous amount of additional information used to strengthen and support what is presented in each chapter. Most of this work is accomplished using the sides of each page, which is common in most current textbooks. The sheer number of visual aids used throughout the book is impressive, and despite the frequency with which they are used, they are usually helpful.
The single greatest fault that I can raise with this textbook is that, quite simply, the scope is so broad. Its purpose is to present the reader with a brief exposure to each of the major fields in I-O Psychology, and it succeeds in doing this. However, many of the chapters feel a little too general, especially towards the end of the book, when the authors are still presenting more subsets of I-O Psychology. Several chapters are used in the front of the book to give the reader a working terminology for the book and a basic theoretical framework needed to better understand some of the more difficult concepts in this field. Since the book never moves beyond an introduction to all these subsets of I-O Psychology, however, it seems as if some of this information could be trimmed down so that more depth could be achieved in some of the later chapters. Of course, the danger with this approach might be that the book would move beyond the purpose for which it was intended.
For the most part, this is a well-constructed, informative textbook, and serves to introduce its readers to I-O Psychology. The chapters flow very well, and the textbook is broken down nicely so that the reader is never overwhelmed with too much information at one sitting. Some chapters are more effective than others, and some of the introductory chapters seem a bit unnecessary, but those are essentially the book's only failings.
This is a good textbook that I would recommend to anyone looking for information on I-O Psychology. At the very least, it will help readers determine where their true interest is in this field and provide them with a good working vocabulary as well.

4 out of 5 stars Important work. .......2006-03-30

Quite good. Important forum where day-to-day issues that come up in a workplace are tackled in a no-nonsence manner and explained in an integral causational respect.

      1 out of 5 stars Refund???!!!!!???.......2005-10-03

My review for this item is a bad one because I purchased the book and then right before it was supposed to arrive in my hands they initiate a refund because they are "unable to fulfill your order." I was not pleased. So my advice to you, be careful, they might have an "inventory discrepancy" and therefore you will not get the book you purchased.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Book on I/O Psych.......2003-05-20

This is the best book available on Industrial/Organizational Psychology. I have used it for several years. I enjoy it, and my students enjoy as well.

3 out of 5 stars Writing uncomplicated but too theoretical.......1999-05-01

I think that they should have presented a more applicable, rather than theoretical, approach to the foundations of work. However, it covered a variety of topics and the tables were superb.

As I started to read this book the introduction seemed to be a conclusion summing up all the chapters to come. Entering into the first chapter left me frustrated because it also cited from the other chapters. I feel that I should be reading this book backwards, perhaps then I wouldn't be so confused. Perhaps if you can get through the first part of this book it gets better, good luck.

        Book Description

Introduction to Social Psychology is a comprehensive and accessible introductory text for students of social psychology. Each chapter has been written by well-established researchers in the field who not only explain clearly the theory and research in their field of expertise but also manage to communicate their enthusiasm for their chosen field. The third edition retains the two distinctive features that have made the previous editions so successful. Firstly, each chapter is authored by leading European experts, giving a state of the art presentation of key works from America, Europe, Australasia, and indeed internationally. Secondly, material is presented in sufficient detail to give students a real understanding of theories and studies presented, rather than a superficial gloss on the field. There are also some extensive revisions in the new edition, in terms of who the authors are, what material is covered, and how it is presented:- New authors -Seven of the chapters are written by experts who did not feature in the previous edition and the remaining chapters have been extensively revised. Explicit instructions from the editors have ensured an even writing style and integration between the 17 chapters, and careful editing draws out cross-references and helps the student to see how different topics interrelate.- New material -New chapters include Cooperation and Competition in Social Interaction, Health Psychology, and Organizational Psychology. The last two new chapters reflect the increased attention paid to applications of social psychology.- New presentation -New pedagogical features include chapter outlines, key concepts and learning questions. These help the reader to monitor their own progress and focus on the key principles.Together with The Blackwell Reader in Social Psychology and The Blackwell Encyclopedia of Social Psychology, this new edition presents a complete social psychology course for those looking to provide their students with a thorough and challenging introduction to this burgeoning field of study.

An extremely readable book, intended for undergraduates but appealing even to the layman: it doesn't need any previous knowledge of psychology to be read. Broad coverage of the field. I enjoyed this textbook.

4 out of 5 stars the best choice for a psychology student.......2000-07-23

As a psychology student and as english is my second language, this book is well written and has provided me with the best examples in social psychology in addition to the best understanding of the issues invlolved. The editors of the book have provided the best way to understand social psychology, without needing to have previous knowledge around it. I strongly recommend it as an essential book for a psychology degree.

        Book Description

This book describes the capabilities and limitations of the human operator—both physical and mental—and how these should be used to guide the design of systems with which people interact. General principles of human-system interaction and design are presented, and included are specific examples of successful and unsuccessful interactions. It links theories of human performance that underlie the principles with real-world experience, without a heavy engineering-oriented perspective. Topics include design and evaluation methods; different systems such as visual, auditory, tactile, vestibular, automated, and transportation; cognition, decision-making, and aesthetics; physiology; and stress, safety, accidents, and human error. An excellent reference for personnel and managers in the workplace.

4 out of 5 stars Textbook has supported class well........2007-07-19

I've used this book in my human factors grad/undergrad class for 4 years. This book is the only text in human factors with up to date information from research in cognitive science, and a cognitive science perspective on human error. The book is weaker on the ergonomics and design side, and quite weak on social aspects of human factors. I use the book in combination with Don Norman's book and the Casey book of case studies.

I do not require students to memorize the book. They use it as a reference for doing problem solving and case analyses. It contains good research references and many important facts and figures that human factors and design professionals need.

        1 out of 5 stars Useless........2006-12-11

This was the single most atrocious example of a "text book" I've ever had the displeasure of dealing with. Very poor editing throughout, and often the outline structure was unnavigable. Adding to that problem, was poor grammar and sections that simply made no sense. "...incentive programs are effective over long periods of time as long as they are not dropped permanently at some point." My suggestion, if you have a class that requires this textbook, find a new class.

1 out of 5 stars Very Poor Writing.......2006-12-09

Just finished a HF course and this was the required text for the course. This text is awful. Very poor writing, incorrect or misleading info is presented, in the area's of work physiology, etc. The author did not explore or offer ANY additional insight in area's such as bio-mechanics etc.. HUGE sections of the text are pure quotes from other sources.. Very poor.. All I can say is thank goodness I was able to sell the book.

4 out of 5 stars Good introduction to Human Factors Engineering.......2002-02-20

Wickens et al. really fill the gap between system engineering and cognitive psychology. I have found quite a few of books of this kind.
The book contains good examples and references for workplace design, environmental conditions and several other applications that make it useful for a course textbook or professional's desk reference.
One word of caution (mea culpa as well): the authors did not address in this version the engineering tradition of poor, monotonous writing.

        5 out of 5 stars Extraordinary!.......2000-09-30

Wickens is a true pioneer in the field of human factors who fills the gap between (system) engineering and cognitive psychology with great diligence and competence. This book, "An Introduction to Human Factors Engineering", is another excellent reference tool made for engineers to integrate psychologic research results in their creations; I read it in combination with Wickens' "Engineering Psychology and Human Performance", which concentrates rather on the psychological perspective of human factors than on practical design advices. Both books have considerable overlappings, and are similar to each other, even in the structure of the chapters; nevertheless, I highly recommend them both. I have not (yet) found better literature for this field.
