Remember the phrase "question authority"? Loving What Is is a workbook on questioning authority--but in this case, what is in question is the authority of our own fundamental beliefs about our relationships.

Known simply as "The Work," Byron Katie's methods are clean and straightforward. The basis is a series of four questions addressed to your own lists of written assumptions. Whether you're angry with your boss, frustrated with your teen's behavior, or appalled at the state of the world's environment, Katie suggests you write down your most honest thoughts on the matter, and then begin the examination. Starting with, "Is it true?" and continuing with explorations of "Who would you be without that thought?" this method allows you to get through unhelpful preconceptions and find peace. An integral part of the process is "turning the thought around," and at first this can seem like you're simply blaming yourself for everything. Push a little harder, and you'll find a very responsible acceptance of reality, beyond questions of fault and blame.

The book is filled with examples of folks applying The Work to a variety of life situations, and reading other's examples gets the idea across pretty clearly; chances are you'll find your own frustrations echoed on the pages a few times. Many chapters are divided into specific topics, such as couples, money, addictions, and self-judgments, with one chapter devoted to exploring the method with children.

Questioning your own authority is never an easy process, but it seems well worth the potential rewards--stress-free choices, peace, and affection for those closest to you. --Jill Lightner

Book Description

Out of nowhere, like a fresh breeze in a marketplace crowded with advice on what to believe, comes Byron Katie and what she calls “The Work.” In the midst of a normal life, Katie became increasingly depressed, and over a ten-year period sank further into rage, despair, and thoughts of suicide. Then one morning, she woke up in a state of absolute joy, filled with the realization of how her own suffering had ended. The freedom of that realization has never left her, and now in Loving What Is you can discover the same freedom through The Work.

The Work is simply four questions that, when applied to a specific problem, enable you to see what is troubling you in an entirely different light. As Katie says, “It’s not the problem that causes our suffering; it’s our thinking about the problem.” Contrary to popular belief, trying to let go of a painful thought never works; instead, once we have done The Work, the thought lets go of us. At that point, we can truly love what is, just as it is.

Loving What Is will show you step-by-step, through clear and vivid examples, exactly how to use this revolutionary process for yourself. You’ll see people do The Work with Katie on a broad range of human problems, from a wife ready to leave her husband because he wants more sex, to a Manhattan worker paralyzed by fear of terrorism, to a woman suffering over a death in her family. Many people have discovered The Work’s power to solve problems; in addition, they say that through The Work they experience a sense of lasting peace and find the clarity and energy to act, even in situations that had previously seemed impossible.

If you continue to do The Work, you may discover, as many people have, that the questioning flows into every aspect of your life, effortlessly undoing the stressful thoughts that keep you from experiencing peace. Loving What Is offers everything you need to learn and live this remarkable process, and to find happiness as what Katie calls “a lover of reality.”

"Good Lord! Where did Byron Katie come from? She's the real McCoy. Her Work is amazingly effective -- a simple, straightforward antidote to the suffering we unnecessarily create for ourselves. She asks us to believe nothing, but provides a surprisingly effective and simple way to cut through the tangle of delusions we wrap ourselves in. Just reading the exchanges in Loving What Is, I can admit things I didn't want to admit and stop torturing myself in ways I didn't realize I was doing."
DAVID CHADWICK, AUTHOR OF CROOKED CUCUMBER: THE LIFE AND ZEN TEACHING OF SHUNRYU SUZUKI

"Suppose you could find a simple way to embrace your life with joy, stop arguing with reality, and achieve serenity in the midst of chaos? That is what Loving What Is offers. It is no less than a revolutionary way to live your life. The question is: are we brave enough to accept it?"
ERICA JONG, AUTHOR OF FEAR OF FLYING

"Byron Katie's Work is a great blessing for our planet. The root cause of suffering is identification with our thoughts, the 'stories' that are continuously running through our minds. Byron Katie's Work acts like a razor-sharp sword that cuts through that illusion and enables you to know for yourself the timeless essence of your being. Joy, peace, and love emanate from it as your natural state. In Loving What Is, you have the key. Now use it."
ECKHART TOLLE, AUTHOR OF THE POWER OF NOW

"Loving What Is is filled with the essence of wisdom. Katie's Work is a wonderful, transformative practice

5 out of 5 stars Has helped me move in a healthy new direction.......2007-10-03

I ran across this book in August of 2007 while visiting a friend. Instead of just flipping through it, I was having a hard time putting it down. That was an unusual thing for me -- self-help books usually annoy me, or bore me. Still skeptical, but intrigued, I checked the book out of the library, and quickly read it through.

There is nothing in this book or in her other books that I haven't heard in various forms in my life. But, for some reason, the way "the work" is presented resonated with me in a way that other presentations of the same truth did not.

I've applied these priciples to my life, and have been experiencing genuine change for the better. That may be a little weak: I want to make it clear that I'm not just experiencing minor changes, things are dramatically different in my attitude and in all of my relationships. Perhaps the fact that Ms. Katie is not a therapist, a mystic or a guru made her presentation of these concepts easier for me to understand and apply to my life.

Is the book perfect? Not in my opinion. Is Katie perfect? She doesn't seem to be. Other reviewers mentioned that Katie seems to sometimes steer people's inquiry toward her own way of thinking. I had the same thoughts myself a couple of times. But, she makes no claims to be all-knowing or anything other than exactly what she is, so those things don't bother me. Heck, I've got opinions on how just about anyone else "should" be living their lives, it's my own life that I've been ignoring. If people feel that they were "steered," then perhaps they'll go through the questions again and see if they come up with answers that work better for them.

I've blamed others (and one person in particular) for the unhappy circumstances in which I found myself. When I began applying the four questions described in this book to these feelings, I began to truly understand that I am the one responsible for where I am and the only person I can change is myself.

Things are as they are and it's up to me to make my own decisions based on those circumstances. After years of lamenting that certain people "should" behave differently, the only thing that happened was that my friends got sick of hearing me complain. Accepting things as they are, and making decisions accordingly, is making all the difference.

I don't know why the teachings in this book spoke to me so clearly when other teachings did not, but I'm grateful for it. I found this book to be life changing, and have recommended it to several friends.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing...Completely Changed my Life.......2007-09-23

Thank You Katie. This is one of a few books that have had a major, major positive impact on my life. It turned me from being a high stress, anxious person, that didn't always sleep at night, to the lay back person I want to be...and with no real effort, but with a different, but simple way of looking at what is.

5 out of 5 stars Loving what is - quest to change your personal computer.......2007-09-17

Imagine you are the creator of the most elegant and sophisticated personal computer (something like an Apple's iPod).
Now imagine that when you have created your machine you made some of the mistakes and you
a) Desire to fix them or
b) Desire to undo them or
c) Desire to redesign it.
Katie Byron gives you simplest technique, where you as a creator can
a) Fix your machine - your personal thoughts,
b) Undo your mistakes,
c) Redesign yourself. Ultimately building a perfect machine - just like your Creator wanted you to be.
If you do not believe in the Creator "nonsense" and think that you just came from the outer space bacteria and mutated into a human being in the last 16 billion years, then you can use Katie's book to create a best bacteria out of yourself from scratch and undo 16 billion years of possible mistakes.
Great book, happy reading, and ultimately happy re-wiring

5 out of 5 stars More powerful than you might think.......2007-09-15

This is a super book. What I realized after reading it is that its real power is manifested through the way one sees the world after doing "The Work" described in it. When we accept what is, our very own and personally experienced perception of our issues (e.g. conflicts with people, situations, etc.) actually changes. Simply stated, we learn to see things for how they really are versus seeing them as we have embedded them in the ego-invested stories we tell ourselves about those conflicts/situations. Essentially, as we learn to do "The Work" our stories get lovingly stripped down to what actually is versus what our ego would have us believe they are. When we change how we think, we change how we interact with the world and it naturally follows that how we experience the world then changes as well, all in wonderfully positive and profound ways. It doesn't happen all at once; after all, many of those who do "The Work" are well into adulthood with fully defended egos. For those who come from dysfunctional backgrounds, "The Work" helps us face how that dysfunction is hindering us and gives us powerful tools to eliminate it. Excellent book recommended to me by a trusted, wonderful professional.

2 out of 5 stars Inquiry is good - blaming Self for childhood abuse: bad.......2007-09-08

Her work of always looking at one's part in things, as an ADULT, is the ticket to anyone's happiness. The problem with Byron Katie's work, is when people pour out their hearts regarding their childhood sexual and other abuse. She then does the "turn-around" where they BLAME themselves for their abuse, and not being "loving" to their perpetrators. See for yourself on Disk 6. Just don't try this at home.....

I'm all for looking at my part of everything. But abusing children, is ALWAYS on the shoulders of the perpetrator - never ever should it be on the child. The child is weak. The adult is powerful. EVEN if the child "allowed" themselves to be raped for "love" - this is rape. It is exactly here, where I entirely lost my respect for The Work. Like I said, see for yourself. Do your own research.

Happy Seeking!

Discover the Four Questions that Will Forever Transform Your Life's Journey

No matter how much money, status, or success they may have, very few people experience true joy and personal freedom. Byron Katie knows this reality too well. In the midst of a "normal and successful" life, she was sinking deeper and deeper into depression and despair until a sudden, profound insight into how the mind works set her on the path to a life filled with love for everything life brings. Eager to help others find this freedom, Katie developed a revolutionary process to make this transformation practical, a simple yet powerful method of inquiry known as The Work.

The Work's four powerful questions and turnaround (which is a way of experiencing the opposite of what you believe) have transformed the lives of hundreds of thousands of people throughout the world. In Your Inner Awakening, Byron Katie will teach you how to use The Work for yourself to question and undo any stressful thought that keeps you from experiencing mental clarity. You'll discover that trying to let go of a painful thought never works; instead once you have investigated it, the thought lets go of you. Eventually you may find, as so many others have, that peace and joy flow into every area of your life.

Loving What Is: Four Questions That Can Change Your LifeA Thousand Names for Joy: Living in Harmony with the Way Things Are

For anyone interested in a laser tool to their own inner peace this is all that and more. Byron Katie is like having an enlightened master come sit in your kitchen and chat over a cup of tea. Then she leaves giving you everything you need to continue getting that feeling every day on your own all by yourself. There is hope for peace and this is it, one thought at a time. Begin now.

5 out of 5 stars A Katie Primer.......2007-07-25

I am a recent Katie devotee and asked at one of her seminars - where there are a gazillion cds and dvds for sale - which of those gave a basic explanation of "The Work" rather than just Katie in action doing The Work. If you've been to one of her events, you know she doesn't come on stage and explain how one does The Work, it's philosophy and methodology, how she arrived at it, etc. she just starts doing The Work with someone chosen from the sudience. Anyway, the person helping me with sales said there really wasn't one particular disc, but they were obviously uniformed. THIS IS IT! If you are looking to start somewhere with Katie and The Work, and I highly you do, this is a GREAT way to start, (plus going to her web site to watch the videos.) If you have an open mind, you'll never be the same. The Work saved my life; unfortunately, I found it too late to save my relationship. I wish I knew then what I know now. My life and my thinking will never be the same.

5 out of 5 stars More is more.......2007-07-17

I met "Katie's" "the Work" a few weeks ago, and agree with other reviews that it cannot be recommend it highly enough. There is no slant to her work, just four questions to enable me to find out the error in my thinking that causes me stress, confusion and anxiety. The questions I answer to my self change how I think, therefore how I am, therefore how I am in every aspect of my life. This is very, very freeing. There are no rules, or difficult methods to remember, or religious biases, just examining my own thinking, and finding out if it is in fact the truth. The thinking changes the feelings and the actions come as a result.
Brilliant, easy to listen to, practical, funny, and somehow this "work" helps me to find and believe in myself and gives me permission to find the good in me and everyone i meet. Thank you Katie

3 out of 5 stars Good for Byron Katie fans.......2007-06-13

Byron Katie certainly has endured difficulties in life and has used these challenges to help others find their way. So if you are a follower of Byron Katie, you will enjoy this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Your Inner Awakening.......2007-05-18

These CDS have been priceless, to help bring peace into my life on a continual basis, rather than just for the moment I'm listening.
I have found peace with events and people in my life because of the "reality" "truth" questions.

My gift to anyone would be "The Work" of Byron Katie. If I could hand you a silver platter with PEACE, this would be it.

Katie's simple questions are the only tools needed to end suffering and uncover brilliant freedom, joy, clarity, and peace.
My shelves of spiritual texts are now collecting dust while her materials see daily use. I was simply mistaken when I thought truth had to be more colorful, exotic, fluffy, or complicated.

As I do The Work, I reap the rewards.

After reading her other books, I thought I might find this set to be a plain repetition. Wrong. It is amazingly crystaline fresh and packed with so many insights which help The Work to penetrate deeper.
I've been replaying these discs over and over and each time it strikes me as brand new and different.

Jewels.
I invite you to The Work.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good Questions, Good Answers.......2006-09-28

I bought this book because every year, our church has a theological question and answer night, and this book has a lot of good questions that people ask about the Christian faith.

R.C Sproul is eminently qualified to write this book because he is a leading apologist for the Christian faith. I especially appreciated his answers to questions related to God's sovereignty and man's freedom, the identity of Jesus Christ, the reliability of the Bible, and heaven and hell. Sproul's questions and his answers will prepare and help a pastor or Christian layperson explain the faith to those with inquiring minds.

I also appreciated the humble spirit that Sproul brings to this book. He knows that it is an awesome thing to teach the word of God, and he feels the weight of the calling (you can tell this by reading the introduction).

It should also be stressed that R.C Sproul is a five point Calvinistic Christian. That means his answers to questions related to predestination, eternal security, the end times, and the atoning work of Jesus Christ on the cross are going to be slightly different than the answers a less Calvinistic Christian might give.

For example, Sproul believes that God predestines certain individuals to be saved and chooses to pass the rest of humanity by. He also teaches that Jesus died only for those chosen to salvation.

He also teaches that the coming of Jesus predicted in Matthew 24 is a coming in judgment on Jerusalem and the temple, not a 2nd coming to establish a 1000 year millennial kingdom on earth. Some believers in Christ do not hold these positions, and yet they color a number of Sproul's answers.

But the preponderance of the book gives solid, evangelical answers to the questions people ask. Sproul is also not afraid to say that sometimes, the answer is "I don't know." This is a good book, and I am glad I found it at the Barnes and Noble book store.

5 out of 5 stars Tough answers to tough questions.......2006-03-13

Once again, R.C. Sproul uses his conversational style to shed light on tough questions in Scripture. His insights and deep understanding of the Bible should help any serious student of Scripture. I recommend this book highly.

All steps to making the purchase were very easy. My merchandise arrived in a timely manner (as expected) and was in the same condition as described by the owner.

5 out of 5 stars Difficult Questions, Answered Intelligently.......2002-07-03

I am a Christian who has been studying the bible for about five years, and I still have much to learn. I love to read books that ask the tough questions and try to answer them based on the bible! I read another review of this book saying it does not do that; I respectfully disagree. I believe Mr. Sproul has given us an intelligent, succinct, well-thought-out answer to many of the difficult questions that come up about the Christian faith. I pick the book up and re-read it often, as I can always find something new. I recommend this book to anyone who is looking for an educated approach to questions we sometimes hear from others, or even come up with ourselves!

1 out of 5 stars Good Questions, No Answers.......2002-04-20

Sproul tried to answer age-old theoligical questions in one to two paragraphs with litle Biblical support or objectivity.

5 out of 5 stars Quality Family Time.......2004-12-24

I received this book as a gift from a teacher girlfriend. At first I was overwhelmed-it's a big book. My friend told me to trust her, pick a page (any page), gather my kids and start. I am glad I did.

I started with an interview titled "All the Senses". As an introduction, my 5 and 7 year olds and I talked about what our senses were. Then I interviewed them, writing down both of their answers to questions about their favorites smells, sounds, sensations, sights...in the same book. The kids liked having this "talking time" with me. After a few minutes, my husband, overhearing us, stopped doing the dishes and joined us so he could listen too.

In our family, the temptation is to just get things done in the evening. This book helps my husband and me spend just 10 or 20 precious minutes really talking and communicating with the kids. It's easy. It's fun and together we're creating a keepsake treasure. I recommend it to parents everywhere.

Book Description

A fresh, impassioned guide on the art of question-asking--with powerful examples to use in every workplace situation.

What's wrong with this picture? On the one hand, a passive, unquestioning attitude is considered detrimental to a person's career and to an organization's growth. On the other hand, focused, probing questions are rarely encouraged, and the skills needed to ask them almost never taught.

QUESTIONS THAT WORK is here to change that. Written by a seasoned business reporter and manager, this provocative "questioning manifesto" and practical "how-to" book gives people the insights and tools to ask thoughtful questions in every realm of their professional lives. It is also a powerful tool to help business leaders create a progressive environment where questions flow freely and creatively--boosting knowledge and performance at all levels of the organization.

Best yet, the book supplies hundreds of pre-prepared, carefully crafted questions that readers can use to find the right job, negotiate the best pay, hire the right team, sell an idea, or change their company.

When companies collapse, it is often a lack of questioning that contributed to the crisis. When careers falter, it is a lack of questions that created the failure. In the words of the author: "Your success depends on what questions you ask. Workers of the world, question!"

5 out of 5 stars questions you never thought to ask.......2004-04-23

A lot of work went into this book. You can tell the author interviewed many people in many lines of work to come up with all of these questions. The book received a good review from the ALA which recommended it to their librarians. The book was described as sagacious. When you look it up, that's means it has keen practical sense. We need more books like that. Hope this review helps.

5 out of 5 stars A Useful Tool and Enjoyable, Insightful Read.......2003-02-09

I read this book and found it to be extremely useful in a number of applications. In particular if you are looking for a job or career advancement, this book gives you great ideas to help you analyze your own objectives as well as the value that you bring to your company.

I think this book would be of great help to college students as well as they write papers or apply for internships. It helps you isolate what is important and to research appropriately.

I would highly recommend this book. A great read on business trips - gets you thinking.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful! - I recommend this book to my MBA students.......2002-10-01

Recent research suggests that questioning and listening are important but often neglected skills for MBA students. Therefore this past summer I surveyed the available books on this topic to see if there was a book I could use as a resource for my new course (at the Haas School of Business at UC Berkeley), which requires the students to do a significant amount of interviewing. I was delighted to discover "Questions that Work." Finlayson's argument is that in this time of constant change we each need to cultivate a "personal questioning network" of people with all sorts of expertise to whom we can go for help. His book is an inspiring and practical how-to guide for the construction of, and graceful and effective use of, such a network. I recommend it highly.

2 out of 5 stars High hopes, but disappointed.......2002-05-23

I have always been a strong advocate for intelligent questioning, so was excited to see a book devoted to this topic. There were definitely some good points, but overall, I felt like I do after seeing a long movie I was anticipating to be wonderful, but turns out to be a waste of my time...I want my money back!

2 out of 5 stars A few nice ideas but too long.......2001-10-05

Asking questions is an important skill and this book contains some useful ideas and techniques. However, it would benefit from some serious editing as it is far too long and is badly arranged. About 150 pages less would be about right.

Books of trivia are always fun, but there's a tendency to find misinformation or incomplete information in these books. Of course, errors are unavoidable, but honesty about this is almost always absent from a book of random facts. Stumpers! takes a different approach, compiling questions and answers from an Internet discussion group. The great pleasure of this approach is that any one question may have a number of responses from a variety of participants in the discussion. Thus, alternatives are presented and the responses to some questions are contradicted by further responses, an intriguing approach that points to the endless nature of question asking. Plus, the chosen questions are a kick, ranging from debunking the myth of "Pope Joan" to finding the name of that little cartoon guy who used to be in the Hawaiian Punch ads. --James DiGiovanna

Book Description

When people are faced with questions they can't answer, they often go to their local reference librarian.  But when reference librarians are stumped, where do they go?  The answer is Stumpers!, an Internet discussion group devoted to the questions even the professionals couldn't handle.

*  What is the value of the chemicals in the human body?
*  Why did Napoleon keep his hand in his jacket?
*  Do the people now alive outnumber the people who have ever lived?
*  Who was the last slave to serve in the White House?
*  What was the first couple on television allowed to sleep in the same bed?

The standard references are silent, but Stumpers! has answered them all, combining the traditional accuracy of reference librarians with the fast-moving wit of the Internet.  With hundreds of answers in categories ranging from Government to Sports, Folklore to Science, Stumpers! is the perfect gift for any trivia fan.

5 out of 5 stars Librarians respond to new technologies--and not with "shhh!".......1999-06-29

It's interesting to look at Stumpers, as the one who started the whole thing, way back in 1992, when I was a Library Science student thinking, "You know, there's an interesting new way we could use this Internet thing..."

That was way back in the days when the web was mostly compiled of gophers and ftp sites, and Lynx was pretty high-tech. It's all grown a lot since then--the Internet, Stumpers, and the network of librarians on the Internet and on Stumpers.

This collection is a tribute to the resourcefulness and mutual helpfulness of librarians, as well as a great read. Librarians are far from mouse-haired whisperers of "Shhh," hiding behind their card catalogs--they're the ones who are making revolutionary use of revolutionary technologies!

5 out of 5 stars Answers are trivial -- it's about learning to find them........1998-11-07

As one of the people quoted in _Stumpers_, I want to tweak your "book description" a bit. When reference librarians are stumped, we go to *other reference librarians.* Though the questions Fred has chosen are the wildest and wooliest in the Stumpers archives, they're not exactly "questions even the professionals couldn't handle." They are questions that one particular professional, who may be in a very small or very specialized library -- or whose books are packed up for a move -- couldn't find on that particular day, and forwarded to the World's Biggest Virtual Reference Desk.

That said, we do tend to get some truly gnarly stumpers. (My favorite is the carefully handwritten note one librarian received asking for the name of a song that goes "dah-dee-dah-dee-dum-de-dee-dah...") It's amazing how often the impossible ones do get answered.

The point of the Stumpers-L discussion group is that if enough of us participate, *one* at least is sure to have the answer. In the several years I've been a member, we've had contributions from subject experts in an amazing range of specialities, people you couldn't afford to hire as consultants even if you knew they existed. (The book's full of wonderful examples.)

The great thing is the spirit of collegiality among this huge diverse group of people, most of whom never meet in real life, who may have nothing in common except an addiction to finding things out. Reading the book will give you a stash of deliriously odd facts to reel out at parties, but it will also teach you something about the nature of information and the meaning of "answers."

    Book Description

Author Faith Brynie collected questions about food from hundreds of middle school and high school students in planning this book. She selected the 101 most important, intriguing, and amusing questions for this, the fifth volume in her award-winning 101 QUESTIONS... series. In a question and answer format, punctuated by occasional longer features that probe a single topic in-depth, Brynie covers everything from the anatomy of the digestive system to the strange cravings for non-food items that characterize the eating disorder called pica. She enlightens and entertains with answers on why fat cells are friends (to a point) and how food may affect brain chemistry and mood. The book provides up-to-date research information on the relation between nutrition and good health. The book discusses genetic modification of food crops and the potential for foods engineered to be vaccines. Chapters on digestive diseases, food safety, and food as medicine round out this comprehensive, informative, and sometimes humorous volume. For readers age 12 and older.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Informative and Easy to Read.......2002-12-12

This is a book that is easy to read, and its easy to understand. The book is broken down in 5 sections; Questions that Should Come First, Questions about Food and Good Health, Quesitons about When Things Go Wrong, Questions About Food Safety, and Questions about Food as Medicine. This book is not written from a perspective such as a health food book might have, but its more middle of the road.
The book uses pictures as well as illustrations when certain topics are discussed. The book answers questions about lactose intolerance, caffine in sodas, food poisoning, and much more. Its actually very informative on many different subjects. If you are looking for this book for one particular area, this isn't the book for you. While it has an appendex that is large and full of other sources this book is best at giving small analysis on many different areas.
