5 out of 5 stars Osland is genius.......2006-06-04

I got this book after attending her EMBA class at Sabanci University. She is truly one of the 'all stars' in the field. She has the know-how and the right attitude. If you have a chance to attend to her course do it; if not get the book. Very highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Well-grounded OB course basics.......2003-04-02

"The organizational behavior reader" contains twenty chapters, each with two or three readings by recognized academic experts, usually adapted from the original source, e.g., Harvard Business Review. Chapters begin with the psychological contract (1), theories of managing people (2), individual and organizational learning (3), individual and organizational motivation (4), ethics and values (5), personal growth and work stress (6), and later topics include managing diversity (12), leadership (13), decision making (15), performance appraisal (18), and managing change (20). The pantheon of authors features experts such as Henry Mintzberg, Jay Conger, Denise Rousseau, Ed Lawler, Peter Senge, Cary Cooper, Deborah Tannen, Geert Hofstede, Hank Sims, Victor Vroom, Jeffrey Pfeffer, Ray Miles, and Rosabeth Moss Kanter. There are numerous charts, diagrams, graphs and models. Anecdotes and examples are plentiful. Self-assessments are rare. Few of the readings offer empirical data; the emphasis is on mental models, images, and concepts.

Professors of organizational behavior, looking for readings rather than integrated text, exercises, and cases, as well as a less expensive alternative to traditional college textbooks, will find this book appealing. These authors are, in general, engaging and highly readable. Chapters can be assigned in an order or avoided altogether to please the teacher's preferences. The breadth of topics, the currency of the treatments, and the expertise of the authors provide a solid foundation for the primary college OB course. Graduate students in need of less text structure and faculty in need of less ancillary materials will find the most benefit.

The book is rooted in social psychology and emphasizes perception, learning, thinking, images and personality, e.g., interpersonal communication, attribution, creativity. There is less on the `behavior' side of organizational behavior. Several authors use the device of posing `myths' to contrast with the author's learned, alternative state (`fact'), and sometimes the myths read more like `conventional wisdom' or the author's own attempt to make his or her point more vivid by presenting a myth that exists only in the minds of a few people. For business school students, this reader is more about organizations and people than about business. Business faculty and courses adopting this book will likely want and need to provide a management context.

5 out of 5 stars Process "is as important as content, and sometimes more important." Edgar H. Schein.......2007-07-11

The scope and depth of coverage of an especially important business subject in this volume are unsurpassed by any other single source of which I am familiar. (There are 952 pages of material provided within 47 entries, followed by References, Name Index, and Subject Index.) I acknowledge that I have not read all of the entries selected and edited by Joan V. Gallos, who also provides an excellent Introduction and contributed an article, "Reframing Complexity: A Four Dimensional Approach to Organizational Diagnosis, Development, and Change" (Pages 344-362). Rather, I carefully reviewed the table of contents and selected those of greatest interest to me, some of which I had read previously. I suspect that many others will take the same approach.

Gallos organizes the organization development (OD) material within eight Parts.

The OD Field: Setting the Context, Understanding the Legacy
The OD Core: Understanding and Managing Planned Change
The OD Process: Diagnosis, Intervention, and Levels of Engagement
OD Consulting: leading Change from the Outside
OD Leadership: Fostering Change from the Inside
OD Focus: Organizational Intervention Targets
OD Purpose and Possibilities: Seeing the Forest for the Trees
OD And the Future: Embracing Change and New Directions

Here are several of the articles I had read previously:

"Leading Change: Why Transformation Efforts Fail" John P. Kotter
"Enlist Others" James Kouzes and Barry Posner
"Business Strategy: Creating the Winning Formula" Edward E. Lawler
"The Leader's New Work: Building learning organizations" Peter M. Senge
"Knowledge-Worker Productivity: The Biggest Challenge" Peter F. Drucker

Here are other articles I read for the first time:

"What Is Organizational Development?" Richard Beckhard
"Teaching Smart People How to Learn" Chris Argyris
"Team Development" Glenn M. Parker
"Emerging Directions: Is There a New IOD?" Robert J. Marshak

I share these merely to indicate my own interests but also to suggest the variety of perspectives among the business thinkers. Of course, it remains for each reader to select those entries that are of greatest relevance to her or his own needs and interests.

Credit Joan V. Gallos for making excellent selections and then for organizing the material so well. To repeat, the scope and depth of coverage of an especially important business subject in this volume are unsurpassed by any other single source of which I am familiar. Bravo!

5 out of 5 stars A great read!.......2007-01-10

This was one of the texts used in my Organizational Development course in my MBA program. It packed a punch since it was a large reader, but had Readers Digest versions of very important OD related readings almost in a Reader-style (for those of you familiar with purchasing readers for class). All of the readings were beneficial, and by authors who are the fathers of the field. I highly recommend this for reference reading (look at the number of pages, its not a quick read) and for teaching organizational behavior type courses.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Lack of Real Content.......2003-03-26

Advice to wash your hands, change your shoes, stand up straight is not what someone serious about their company's show effort is looking for or expecting. Not a serious work for the trade.

5 out of 5 stars For Veterans or Rookies.......2002-09-25

There is something for everyone in this book. Easy to read. People working trade shows can learn a lot just by skimming the pages or choosing a couple of chapters to read. I recommend it for people of all industries.

4 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Book.......2002-01-30

This is a very broad-based book about trade show marketing and preparation. Having participated in trade shows and helped to set them up, I wish I (and all the participants in my show) had seen this book prior to renting a booth. The preparation for a show, from what you are presenting, to whom you want to present it to, to what you want to accomplish must be considered and planned for before packing your suit case to go. The author points out a number of great approaches for both the company whose products and services are being represented and for the sales people who will be shaking hands, to evaluate a show, to decide on the investment to make and to measure the return on that investment. There is great discussion for the small business that is trying to sort out making the investment in a trade show. There is also very important tips for the staff members who are going to the show for the first time or for the fiftieth. There are so many important tips in this book that it has a place in every office from the CEO's to the new sales person. The reader will find himself saying over and over, "I never thought about that. I've got to try it at my next show."

Book Description

This reader presents students with an alternative conceptual approach to gender in the workplace. This approach traces the alignment of commonly held assumptions about work and competence with idealized images of masculinity. The readings then illustrate how this alignment limits opportunities for all but a small narrowly defined segment of the workforce. These limitations not only affect the work experiences of women and men, but also restrict how work gets done, and therefore reduce organizational effectiveness. The contributors take stock of the most important recent work on gender and diversity in organizations and apply it to mainstream contemporary management. The result is a book that not only gives readers a deeper understanding of gender and diversity in organizations, but also provokes new ways of thinking about traditional topics, such as leadership, human resource management, negotiation, globalization and organizational change.

Customer Reviews:

Excellent book for anyone interested in gender and work. The editors are aware of issues related to race, in addition to gender, which is an added bonus. Choose this book if you are serious about the topic. If you want something light and fluffy, go with a different book.

    Book Description

Organizational Identity presents the classic works on organizational identity alongside more current thinking on the issues. Ranging from theoretical contributions to empirical studies, the readings in this volume address the key issues of organizational identity, and show how these issues
have developed through contributions from such diverse fields of study as sociology, psychology, management studies and cultural studies. The readings examine questions such as how organizations understand who they are, why organizations develop a sense of identity and belonging where the
boundaries of identity lie and the implications of postmodern and critical theories' challenges to the concept of identity as deeply-rooted and authentic. Book Description

Over the past two decades, the topic of trust moved from bit player to center stage in organizational theory and research. Whereas previously it often had been treated as a mediating variable in empirical studies - a variable of secondary interest, at best - trust emerged in the 1990s as a subject deemed important and worthy of study in its own right. Despite the importance of the topic, to date no single volume currently exists that provides the motivated reader with a sound introduction to, and reasonable overview of, this rapidly growing, widely dispersed, multi-disciplinary literature. Indeed, some of the most influential, foundational pieces remain scattered in obscure journals or books, some of which are not easily found or, in some instances, no longer even in print. Thus the individual scholar hoping to come up to speed with this literature currently had nowhere to turn. This reader provides trust scholars and researchers with a handy reference volume, a broad guide for graduate students hoping to understand and possibly contribute to this significant and still-growing literature, and a resource for teachers at the undergraduate level of undergraduate anthropology, economics, political science, psychology, organizational sciences, and sociology courses.

        Book Description

What is leadership? Are leaders made or born? Are the characteristics and challenges of leadership the same across time and cultures? Do leaders 'pull' or are they 'pushed'? Are leaders driven by needs that may be dysfunctional to the organizations they lead? Do women leaders behave differently from men? Should we look for models of business and organizational leadership in military organizations? These are all just some of the questions posed in this Reader which includes key statements from classical philosophy (Plato, Sun Tzu, Machiavelli) through to modern management writers (Barnard, Kets de Vries, Fiedler, Rosener). The collection will be invaluable to students and managers taking a range of courses in business management and leadership training. In his Introduction, Keith Grint both surveys current thinking on leadership and provides an excellent `road map' of the readings which are grouped under five headings: Classical, Traditional, Modern, Mythical, and Alternative.

          Book Description

In the past decade, complexity-based thinking has exerted increasing, yet somewhat controversial influence over management theory and practice. This has in some part been due to the influence of a number of high-profile articles and the not inconsiderable hype which accompanied them. Another feature of the subject's development has been the diversity of the origins of the thinking and the claims which have been made for it in terms of managerial and organizational implications.

This is the first text to bring this thinking together, presenting some of the most influential writing in the field and showing how the subject has emerged, developed and continues to influence managerial thinking. Seminal contributions to the field have been brought together in a single accessible volume, allowing readers to access what might otherwise appear a very diffuse literature. Moreover, the editors, who represent some of the leading thinkers and writers in this field, have combined these readings with a unique commentary, indicating not only the significance of the papers but teasing out the subtle but significant differences and similarities between them. These commentaries take the form of a discussion between the editors, debating the contribution that each paper has made to the field and the influence it has had on management thinking.

Providing a unique overview, this accessible and thought-provoking reader will be an essential resource for anyone interested in complexity-based approaches.
