Book was delivered in a timely manner and in promised condition. I would order from this source again.

2 out of 5 stars Long winded but not unbearably so.......2003-04-10

This book was used as part of a Business Management program I'm doing and because of the length of chapters we did not get to cover much of the book. I think that the chapters could have been shortened a great deal and more emphasis placed on important issues. The book itself (quality) is extremely poor. Every student in the class found that despite its having a hard cover the pages were falling out and the binding didn't hold.

1 out of 5 stars Ironically, this books needs some ORGANIZATION.......2002-09-14

Maybe, it is just me but I personally think that the book is poorly written and structured. I dislike the style that the author uses writing this book by constantly mentioning the names of scientists who developed some of the theories. This made it extremely difficult to follow due to the overflow of people's names. An example of my own "I wrote this review because John made an experient with Dave Smith that shows Amazon.com Customers will read it and not purchase the book. Dave Smith with Mark Davidson and Howard James conclude that reviews are good and reviews have become a part of good books". This sentence clearly did not have any great purpose, all it did was take up 'word counts'.

Other bad layouts include: Bad paragraph strucuturing (some paragraphs are so badly strucutured that it takes up the entire page), lack of highlights, bad definitions meant that you would actually have to look in the dictionary to get a better explaination. Another example of mine BAD: "Java is comprised of Legend 1422 and Cobra122, using H111 as a base running-engine symmetric to C1223". ALOT of useless nonsense, instead of simple saying "Java is a computer-friendly high level programming language....."

Maybe, I'm wrong or biased but I have definitely seen and used better books. Please write a review on what you think and maybe correct me on some areas if i'm wrong

5 out of 5 stars Spiritual Health and the Emplowered Workplace.......2003-01-22

Up front, Gallagher informs his reader that the one purpose of this book is "to show how your values, and not your business practices, are what drive your success...[and] knowing this secret is perhaps the most strategic competitive factor in today's marketplace." I agree completely with him that there are certain keys "to empower workplaces of any size to succeed at a level far beyond what most people imagine." He carefully organizes his material within 11 chapters which, if rigorously examined in sequence and then their key ideas are carefully coordinated (indeed integrated) by decision-makers, a culture in literally any organization (regardless of size or nature) can become and remain a source of nutrition and (yes) nutrition for everyone involved. Gallagher focuses his reader's attention on several quite different companies which include The Vanguard Group, Wendy's, AutoNation, Dell Computer, Cirque du Soleil, and the St. Paul Saints. The same core values and non-negotiable principles which these companies not only illustrate but indeed celebrate can also be found in other exemplary companies such as Edward Jones, Container Store, Alston & Bird, Xilinx, and Adobe Systems.

Gallagher helps his reader to understand her or his own business culture, how "strategists" drive operational excellence, how "motivators" create a positive working environment, how "team builders" maximize the ROI of human capital, how the "nimble" help to establish and strengthen an infrastructure for change, how "customer champions" build an enduring service culture, how the "passionate" help to create a sense of business as a way of life, and how "visionaries" provide their organization with an awareness of a higher purpose. He also explains why so many corporate cultures fail and why rigorous and comprehensive "cultural due diligence" must be completed prior to mergers, acquisitions, and other growth strategies.

He concludes this brilliant book with some timely observations: "While corporate culture has become a fashionable term to describe the core values that drive an organization, it is also very misleading, because corporate implies that corporate culture is purely the domain of large corporations and high-flying CEOs. It also implies a certain powerlessness on the part of the individual. In reality, neither could be further from the truth." He goes on to reiterate that every organization of any size "has its own culture, and its leaders exert tremendous influence over the values that drive that culture." However, each individual within any culture has the power to define the values within her or his own working environment. At least to some extent, each individual also has the power to change the current values of the organization. Of course, there are some situations which become intolerable, situations which lack both meaning and purpose for certain people.

Gallagher insists (and again, I agree with him completely) that, ultimately, the soul of any organization is no more and no less than the shared values of that organization as revealed in the behavior of those involved. When lists of the most admired companies are formulated, it is no coincidence that those on the list are also the most profitable within their respective industries. For each of them, culture IS strategy. Decision-makers who challenge that are among those in greatest need of what Gallagher offers -- with eloquence as well as precision -- in this book.

Those who share my high regard for this book are urged to read Daniel Goleman's Primal Leadership, David Maister's Practice What You Preach, and Ben McConnell and Jackie Huba's Creating Customer Evangelists.

    Book Description

The statistics are alarming. Homicide is the most frequent manner in which female employees are fatally injured at work; it is the number two cause for men. According to a recent study cited by the Society for Human Resource Management, incidents of workplace violence have increased steadily over the past sixteen years; 58 percent of participating companies reported that disgruntled employees have threatened senior managers in the past year, 17 percent said employees had intentionally and maliciously downloaded computer viruses, and 10 percent said they were victims of product tampering. Meanwhile, the costs linked to workplace violence have been estimated at over $120 billion. Experts agree that risk factors for workplace violence include psychological, behavioral, and situational stressors--and today's volatile business environment increases their intensity. This timely book integrates insights from the fields of management and social psychology to identify the sources of workplace violence and offer readers practical strategies for preventing it, protecting themselves and their employees from it, and reacting swiftly and effectively when it happens. Featuring case examples, interviews, practical recommendations, and resources for additional information, the authors debunk common myths and misconceptions about workplace violence, its perpetrators, and its victims, and consider the link between domestic and workplace violence--in particular, its implications for women and minorities. The result is an essential guide for anyone, including managers and employees, human resource professionals and counselors, psychologists and other advocates, who is affected by the impact of workplace violence and is seeking solutions.

    Book Description

The analysis of how institutions are formed, how they operate and change, and how they influence behavior in society has become a major subject of inquiry in politics, sociology, and economics. A leader in applying game theory to the understanding of institutional analysis, Elinor Ostrom provides in this book a coherent method for undertaking the analysis of diverse economic, political, and social institutions.

Understanding Institutional Diversity explains the Institutional Analysis and Development (IAD) framework, which enables a scholar to choose the most relevant level of interaction for a particular question. This framework examines the arena within which interactions occur, the rules employed by participants to order relationships, the attributes of a biophysical world that structures and is structured by interactions, and the attributes of a community in which a particular arena is placed.

The book explains and illustrates how to use the IAD in the context of both field and experimental studies. Concentrating primarily on the rules aspect of the IAD framework, it provides empirical evidence about the diversity of rules, the calculation process used by participants in changing rules, and the design principles that characterize robust, self-organized resource governance institutions.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A comprehensive look at the management of common-pool resources.......2006-10-19

The book is divided into three parts: in part 1, the author describes analytical concepts useful in examining institutions; in part 2, she focuses on the hierarchy of rules that govern human behavior; and in part 3, she summarizes some key case studies of how institutions have been developed to mitigate the losses of the commons. There are extensive footnotes, and the bibliography includes some of the major work in institutional analysis and common-pool problems....

Ostrom summarizes the rules found in self-organized common-pool resource regimes and lists the range of institutional innovations that exist in local inshore fisheries, community forests, group livestock herds, and irrigation systems. These institutions have constrained free riding and limited individual access and use. Group members are given access, whereas nongroup members are denied, and this arrangement in itself tends to reduce competitive pressures, but more action is necessary. Within the group, some type of property or use right must exist. Ostrom summarizes the internal allocation rules that have been adopted for the assignment of those rights in several empirical cases she and others have studied. She concludes by observing that many key common-pool resource problems can be solved successfully and flexibly by local collective action that does not require intervention by outside third parties. She recognizes that these options, however, are less successful when the group is large and heterogeneous. Finally, she summarizes long-enduring institutions' design principles for governing sustainable resources. These principles include clearly defined boundaries, proportional equivalence between benefits and costs, effective monitoring, sanctions, and conflict resolution mechanisms. Each is illustrated with examples from case studies.

All in all, UNDERSTANDING INSTITUTIONAL DIVERSITY is a comprehensive book on the management of the common pool. It includes overviews of major theoretical issues and empirical studies. Anyone who is interested in how common-pool problems are or are not successfully resolved by locally devised arrangements should read it.

      Book Description

The concept of culture is a key issue within management and organization studies. Understanding Organizational Culture provides a useful and comprehensive guide to understanding organizational culture, from a range of angles, contexts and sectors. The book answers questions of definition, explores alternative perspectives, and expands on substantive issues (such as leadership and change), before discussing key issues of research and providing a new framework for this topic. Mats Alvesson synthesizes for students the advances in the field of organizational culture, drawing upon the range of relevant literature within Organization Studies. The author also uses examples to develop and illustrate ideas on how cultural thinking can be used in managerial and non-managerial organizational theory and (theory-supported) practice. Understanding Organizational Culture provides great breadth within a textbook approach - covering a wide spectrum of management and organization while at the same time developing a new theoretical approach to organizational culture. It will be essential reading for undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Management and Organization Studies, particularly key for modules in Organizational Behavior, Organizational Theory and on MBA programs. It is also relevant to students and academics in sociology and psychology.

            Book Description

Gender underpins contemporary organizational structure and practice, but is often relegated to the margins of mainstream organization theory. Understanding Gender and Organizations provides a comprehensive, gendered perspective on organizational and working life. Mats Alvesson and Yvonne Due Billing demonstrate that a gendered perspective provides important insights into the actions of men and women in organizations and, as a result, the characteristics of organizations as a whole. In consideration of the complex and contradictory nature of gender relations, Alvesson and Billing argue for an organizational analysis that is sensitive to conflicts, ambiguity, and local diversity. Understanding Gender and Organizations will be essential reading for students and academics in management, organization studies, gender studies, social psychology, and sociology of work.

              Book Description

Change is now so commonplace that people no longer talk in terms of the "whitewater epoch". Every sector of the economies of the developed world has experienced huge swathes of change in the last decade of the twentieth century alone. Increased global competition, aided and abetted by technological advances, has led many organizations to seek to re-invent themselves in the hope of being able to survive and thrive. In mature sectors in particular, where the pace of consolidation is accelerating, organizations have had little option but to grow through acquisition or be absorbed. Whether the change is labelled "continuous process improvement", "restructuring", "downsizing" or re-engineering", to employees, change usually brings with it added pressures, job insecurity and a consequent loss of commitment to the organization.

Understanding Change: theory, implementation and success argues that strategic change in the new millennium will be geared increasingly to achieving sustainable high performance, rather than just short-term gains. Most theorists now agree that the real challenge of change lies in gaining employees" willingness to commit to the change effort. Change leaders at every level need to be able to understand the elements at work in any change process, and to use judgement about the style of leadership required to give the change effort the best chance of success.

5 out of 5 stars Good book for understanding background for cultural diversity.......2006-04-24

This is a well-written book, which provides a solid approach to dealing with cross-cultural issues with many excellent examples and statistics. The central purpose of this work is to dispel the idea that there is one correct management model. In addition to initiating the reader into the world of cultural diversity as seen in a business setting, the authors also analyse concrete steps for reconciling cultural dilemmas.

Like many other books in this genre, this book equates culture with the boundaries of the nation states and all countries are treated as monolithic cultures. This may lead readers to assume that once I learn about American of British behaviour, I can predict how any American or Brit would act in a certain situation.

Recommended for managers in multicultural organizations, especially those involved in the process of internationalisation. Students of cross cultural studies and HR-practitioners would also find this book useful.
