Book Description
"The Long Tail" is a powerful new force in our economy: the rise of the niche. As the cost of reaching consumers drops dramatically, our markets are shifting from a one-size-fits-all model of mass appeal to one of unlimited variety for unique tastes. From supermarket shelves to advertising agencies, the ability to offer vast choice is changing everything, and causing us to rethink where our markets lie and how to get to them. Unlimited selection is revealing truths about what consumers want and how they want to get it, from DVDs at Netflix to songs on iTunes to advertising on Google. However, this is not just a virtue of online marketplaces; it is an example of an entirely new economic model for business, one that is just beginning to show its power. After a century of obsessing over the few products at the head of the demand curve, the new economics of distribution allow us to turn our focus to the many more products in the tail, which collectively can create a new market as big as the one we already know. The Long Tail is really about the economics of abundance. New efficiencies in distribution, manufacturing, and marketing are essentially resetting the definition of whats commercially viable across the board. If the 20th century was about hits, the 21st will be equally about niches.

Good article, stretched out to a padded book.......2007-09-26
This book started off as an article in Wired Magazine, and it was an excellent one. But Anderson must have decided to cash in, because the book doesn't add anything that wasn't covered in the article itself. It's not a complex concept.
Read the article on the Wired website. Then go spend your money on something from a tiny niche market.
One Trick Pony.......2007-09-09
This is one of those books that has one, keen insight and then takes one hundred + pages to say the same thing over and again. The keen point is indeed interesting. It just does not a complete book make. My $.02 !!
Good book for the startup entrepreneur in the 21-century .......2007-08-20
This is an insightful book into the today's world of retail business. Cool examples of how the Internet has leveled the playing field for many small businesses and artist.
Looking at it from the point of view of the producer and not the consumer or the retailer .......2007-08-16
I am not much of a business mind but I think I get the picture here. Instead of twenty percent of the product bringing in eighty percent of the revenue ninety- eight percent of the product is going to bring in all the revenue. Having so much available, and having ready access to it means sales no longer concentrate on a relatively few items. Freedom of choice abounds, niches multiply, Alvin Toffler is happy, future shock is no longer shocking, customization is here forever, and we all can have anything we want as long as we are able to pay for it.
Good. But I think of this in another way. Does this mean that 'value' also will not be centered as we ordinarily center it in the great works, the masterpeices, the few chosen ones? Does it mean our whole conception of valuing cultural goods will change, and a few big things will be less worshipped while many more appreciated? In other words will deTocqueville be happy here because 'equality' is in the saddle and mankind has many little good things, instead of the aristocracy only having a few?
And what does that mean for creators of culture? As a writer can I now happily post my unpublished writings with the thought that perhaps a few will read them, where before none did. In other words a moneyless long- tail is still a long- tail.
I don't know. But I do sense Anderson has hit on to a new truth here which will have all kinds of implications better business people than me will have to see.
Must read.......2007-08-14
The Long Tail is a must read for anyone wondering how the Internet works or how it's changing the world as we know it. In the book, Chris Anderson, the editor of Wired Magazine, explains how one simple principle is behind so many of the social and economic changes we are seeing with the internet. The Internet makes it possible for many people to produce and publish cheaply and for many other people to find those "amateur" works easily. For example, until the Internet, the only music you had access to was the top 40 on the radio or maybe the top 500 albums at the music store and maybe a local band at the bar on weekends. Now you have access to hundreds of thousands of songs written and produced by anybody and everybody in the world. Not only that but they are easily searchable in many different ways. So a you don't have to listen to just hits anymore and you don't have to be a world wide hit to be successful. That's what is changing the world. Niche markets are growing (around all of these non-hit works) and at the same time the way we share and find these niche products is becoming easier and easier - creating new communities online.
Chris Anderson explains it much better than me and I highly recommend the book if you've noticed that the Internet is changing the world and wondered why.

Real Food Comes Directly From God, Not Agribusiness.......2007-09-10
Fresh from the garden and orchard, crunchy and juicy, brilliantly-colored, full of vitamins, and fiber - this most appealing, sane, and sensible diet avoids the highly-processed, high-fat, high-sugar, high-salt pseudo-foods created by the girth merchants who care nothing about your bulk, your blood pressure, your diverticulitis, or your cholesterol levels. Hundreds of easy recipes to help you maintain optimal weight and health.
volumetrics eating plan.......2007-09-03
I listened to the CD while driving out to dinner every night and somehow I started losing weight.
The volumetrics Eating Plan Techniques and Recipes.......2007-09-02
This book was the best weightloss/recipe book I have ever purchased. It is a sensible concept. You don't walk away from the table hungy. The recipes are wholesome ingredients that taste good and are good for you. The soups are delicious, as are all the other recipes. My whole family is benefiting from this book.
Sensible Concept .......2007-08-31
Barbara Rollins puts forth a not altogether original concept to the tune of eating more for less calories. A sort of "Cooking Light" meets "South Beach". There are some good recipes and I especially like that she compares the recipes with pictures and nutritional information side by side.
Go with South Beach diet instead.......2007-08-04
I bought this book a month before my doctor prescribed a diet for me. I found it unhelpful and hard to devise an eating plan. I couldn't figure out what to eat. My doctor then diagnosed me with hypertension and highly recommended the South Beach diet. It's been very easy to stick to and understand, unlike Volumetrics.

great deal.......2007-09-30
This is a fabulous little book to keep in your purse or day planner..
I couldn't live without it, have the earlier version and now he's added so many new foods. Very much worth the $$.
Good reference in general.........2007-09-14
I bought this book since it had many fast food places listed in it which is very handy. My only "beef" is that there is no listing of fiber with the carbs, so you cannot separate the "good" and "bad" carbs when planning a meal.
very handy if you eat out.......2007-09-14
I travel often for work which leads to a LOT of dining out every week. Having this book with me is very handy. You will be surprised at how much fat or calories are in the food which is served. Many places still don't break down the calories, fat, protein, etc on the menu....but in comes this book to save the day. Dinners here in the States are the serving size of at least 2 if not 4--and most Americans shovel it in and get fatter and fatter. Buy the guide to help you watch what you eat.
It has it all.......2007-09-14
This book is packed with info, well organized and to the point. It's not about dieting philosophy, long opinions nor reasons why you should or shouldn't follow a set dieting plan (though it has helpful example menu plans), it's more about factual data. It's not written like a novel but rather lots of numbers/lists along with supporting text, great as a reference book. Good find for me as it was just what I was looking for. I wanted something I could keep with me and quickly look up calories, fat, carbs, cholesterol, etc. (mostly what the book contains) and other data for lot's of foods. Excellent value. Glad I bought it.
Caloria King Book.......2007-09-13
The best book I've found so far on counting carbs.
A must have. Includes a wide variety of foods and
places to eat out.

Great Study Guide.......2007-09-14
This book was a great study guide. But if you're looking to be spoon fed the answers on the test - look elsewhere. This is a GUIDE of what COULD be on the test. So you'll really have to study the material, but it's all worth it in the end when you pass with flying colors!
Great study guide.......2007-08-14
This guide was very helpful in preparing for the praxis II content knowledge test. I took the practice test provided in the book and after reading the explanation of the answers to the questions I originally missed, I felt very confident upon entering the test. I have used study guides by other companies and feel that the ones by ETS (which is who administers the tests) are the most helpful.
Now worth the time.......2007-05-22
This study guide was not very helpful. There is only one test included, which provides no basis for comparison. Also, in the example section, there are no answers given to the questions. Not worth the time or money.
Excellent Handbook.......2007-05-18
Of all the Praxis guides, this is the one to have, as it has been prepared by the people who actually make up the test. Subject areas are broken down so studying can be made much easier. The questions are the closest to the ones found on the test. This book was certainly helpful.
If your looking for an Indepth Guide...........2006-11-12
This was a good study guide, if you have a lot of other resource books to study and review off of. It gave a lot of general topics about what would be on the tests and subjects to review on, but it really didn't go into detail like other books, Barrons, etc. would have. It gives a good idea of the test format and what to expect, but other then that not much else. There is a practice test at the end that does help. If your looking for an indepth study guide, this is not it...but it is a good book, if your studying for the test a month or two before the test.

Do you overeat because you don't feel satisfied or full? Volumetrics is based on "the science of satiety"--what researchers have learned about the food choices that make people feel full. The authors teach you how to eat low-calorie-dense, high-volume foods so that you feel like you've eaten plenty, even though you've eaten fewer calories. You'll lose weight without feeling hungry or deprived.
Here's an example of how volume affects eating. Raisins are dried grapes. But 100 calories of raisins fill only one-quarter cup, while 100 calories of fresh, whole grapes fill one and two-thirds cups. You'll feel satisfied after one and two-thirds cups of grapes, but if you're eating raisins, you're likely to keep filling your mouth. The point is not to stop eating raisins (or chocolate, cheese, or other high-calorie, low-volume foods), but to realize that you're likely to take in many more calories before your body tells you you're full. If you're trying to manage your weight, eating more low-density foods (lower-calorie foods that have a lot of volume) will make you feel full while you drop pounds.
Barbara Rolls, a respected and well-published food-nutrition researcher at Pennsylvania State University, and food writer Robert Barnett explain energy density and how to use this concept to lose weight. They include the scientific evidence about how low-density (low-calorie, high-volume) foods make you feel satisfied, the best (and worst) foods for a satisfying, lower-calorie diet, a menu plan, an exercise plan, and environmental influences on eating. You also learn which foods are easiest to overeat. This is not a fad diet--it is logical and scientifically based, yet easy to understand and put into action. --Joan Price
Book Description
Dieters everywhere have the same complaint: they're hungry all the time. Now this revolutionary book, based on sound scientific principles, can help you lose weight safely, effectively, and permanently without those gnawing pangs of hunger.
The Volumetrics Weight-Control Plan introduces the concept of "energy density" -- concentration of calories in each portion of food. Here you'll learn how to avoid high energy -- dense foods, and how such different nutritional factors as fat, fiber, protein, and water affect energy density and satiety. You'll discover which foods, eaten under which circumstances, allow you to consume fewer calories and still be satisfied. And you'll get to know the hidden calorie traps, seemingly innocuous foods that can sneak unwanted calories into your body. Finally, the authors offer 60 sensible, tasty and easy recipes, plus an integrated program of exercise and behavior management that can be sustained over a lifetime.

Volumetrics Review.......2007-06-09
The concepts presented in this book are interesting and valid. The idea of beefing up any dish with free fruits or veggies to up the appetite control and lower the caloric intake makes sense. Also presented are helpful lists of food choices and amounts, helping the reader make wise decisions. However, the recipes included leave a lot to desire. Apparently, the title deals with volume, not taste!! If you want to customize your own food plan and incorporate some of these ideas, you'll be happy with reading this. It is a healthful program, and one that falls in line with heart-smart and diabetic diets.
The Volumetrics Weight-Control Plan.......2007-06-08
Diet was highly rated by Consumers report. Book was easy to understand and made horse sense. I am a volume eater and the other diets didn't fill me. This idea works and I am using it. Only shortcoming was too few recipes Looking for a second book with more.
The Volumetrics Weight-Control Plan
Good information, dispels a lot of myths.......2007-06-03
Everyone that's been sucked in by the low low-carb diet craze (or any other fad diet) should read this book. The author writes the scientific facts behind losing weight and keeping the weight off.
I've already lost 11lbs using the books principles. It's taken 6 weeks to lose that weight; the book doesn't promise quick results. However, I feel confident that the results are permanent, and I'll continue to lose 1 to 2 lbs a week until I get to my healthy weight.
The Volumetrics Weight-Control Plan.......2007-05-25
The menu items are great. Our whole family loves the meals.
This is a great find!.......2007-05-16
I saw this book on the news station one morning and decided to purchase it because it was considered one of the top books for consistent weight loss. This book has a lot of great information, and I was hooked even after the first couple of pages. This book does not tell you to avoid the good foods that we all like, with respect to fried foods, chocolate, and desserts. Rather, the book offers better food choices and explains in full detail what a fat is, what a carbohydrate is, and it's so easy to understand. I love this book because it tells you this is not a diet, but a newer way of eating the correct way. Spend the $8 to get it; it will retrain your thinking about eating and eating the right way, so you're not only more full at dinner, but you won't feel guilty about eating that piece of chocolate cake.

GR8.......2007-03-09
This is a great textbook to read, easy to swallow.
I think this is a must read for every radiology resident before starting subspecialized books.
Useful resource.......2006-12-30
As a radiation oncologist, I find this book very useful and turn to it on many occasions. I do not need a text that goes into a great deal of depth about all aspects of radiology, but I need a resource to turn to when I find myself having to interpret abnormal pathology on imaging (beyond what the radiologist's report says). This book meets that purpose. It is easy to use, has just enough depth and breadth, and is full of beautiful pictures. I highly recommend it.
Excellent First Read.......2003-11-15
This is an excellent introductory text book in radiology. It contains excellent images and covers the key fundamentals in radiology. It would be ideal for the PGY1 or PGY2 resident to read through to gain familarity in radiology before moving on to the major reference texts. Very readable book that does not overwhelm the junior resident with needless minutia.
Fundamental of Diagnostic Radiology.......2002-12-02
This is the single excellent book for Radiology Residents and General Radiologists. Seperate sections on US and NM are the best parts of this book. CT Scan and MRI are dispersed with the General Radiology. If the authors create seperate sections of CT and MRI like US and NM in the next edition, the book will become the only perfect book in General Radiology. This book contains treasure of knowledge for the Radiology residents and racticing General Radiologists.
Concise but not enough for residency........2001-11-14
Not a bad overview of most subjects, but some areas are lacking. The bone trauma subsection is particularly scant, excluding all of the fracture grading schemes. Additionally, while somewhat dedicated to differential generating, you don't really get a feel for what is actually common.
Book Description
Why was this a #1 bestseller in Canada in 2002? Because it is an easy-to-follow, easy-to-stick-to, truly healthy approach to eating that is based on the Glycemic Index, the original science behind The Zone Diet, but eliminates that diet's complexity and tendency to leave dieters wanting more. If you can understand a traffic light, you can understand this diet--and lose weight permanently without feeling hungry, counting calories, or jeopardizing your health. If a food is in the green column, eat it. If it's in the red column, avoid it. And if it's in the yellow column, proceed with caution. Take bread, for example. White bread, with its high G.I. number, is red-because it's so highly processed the body digests it quickly, resulting in a spike in blood sugar, a release of insulin, potential storage as fat, and a quick return of the hungry feeling. Low-G.I. 100% stone-ground whole-wheat bread is green-the body takes a while to digest it, with no spike in blood sugar and a much longer feeling of satiety. Green, yellow, red: It's all here, with a full explanation of how the diet works, plus ratings for breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, eating out or eating in. Includes some recipes, snack ideas, a shopping list, and tips on dining out.

This is a great book!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-08-03
I bought this book for myself and am having such great success that I bought the book for my mother and sister. To date mom and I combined have lost 50 lbs. We have more energy and feel healthier than we have in years. Mom is 63 years old and keeps up with us if not better she says her energy level is just amazing. I have a total of 56 lbs. to lose. I have lost 22 lbs I know with this plan I will make it. This is a way of eating not just a diet but here's the beauty in it you can easily eat this way for the rest of your life. I would recommend this book to anyone who is ready to lose weight and get healthy.
1st Book of the GI Diet.......2007-07-30
This book verifies and clarifies the idea of the insulin and glucose "yo-yo" weight gain. 20 years ago I read another book similar to this idea, "Sugar Blues", but it was considered "fanatical". I recommend this book to anyone who can't understand why they just can't lose weight.
Great Guide for Healthier Living = Weight Loss.......2007-07-25
I ordered this book in late April 2007 and found it a very easy read, with clear and concise charts and explanations. I, like many people, struggle with my weight and find that I have been undertaking the battle of the buldge for nearly 3/4 of my life, so far. I have had enough.
I have tried every plan and I liked Atkins, and had success with it, but I tweaked it and kept my carbs in check but ate lean meats, the "right" fruits and plenty of vegetables. If I eliminated too many of the good foods...I felt crummy.
Low fat by itself was not a good choice for me.
So, I read up on the Glycemic Index and in researching food lists, on the internet, I found this book. Wow! I am glad that I did.
I can't say that it, by itself, is some miracle breakthrough. Much, for me, is stuff that I already knew and found was true with my own body and metabolism. But the book gives great guides, easy to follow lists (RED
< YELLOW AND GREEN LIGHT foods) and takes the guesswork out of eating right.
I have peacefully decided that while I need to lose 70-80 pounds to embrace a healthy BMI - I am not on a diet. I am changing my lifestyle. I am not making changes-TEMPORARILY- but permanently. This book makes that possible. I am still in the weight loss phase and am doing well.
Since the end of April, I have lost 37.4 pounds. This is by following the Glycemic Index and fueling my body with the food that will bring me the most satisfaction and energy. I have never been more satiated or energetic (and I need to be with 3 boys between 1 and 9!) I have also started walking and incorporating activity (real activity- not just chasing after my kids) into my lifestyle. I'm not a fitness guru and wish that I could get the weight off and keep it off without it...but I can't and it won't. I am walking 30 minutes, at LEAST 3 times a week or maximum of 5. That is all I have done differently. I am thrilled and amazed by my progress and am careful to not allow my mindset to change.
I don't want to be diabetic or have high blood pressure or cholesterol. I want to be a healthy, fit 37 year old wife and mother. This book is helping me. The recipes are delicious too!
I think that the high fiber with the low fat, whole grains, fruit and veggies...really helps keep me full and satisfied as well as selecting those foods that don't naturally cause sharp increases or declines in my blood sugar. Thank you, Mr. Gallup for not just being another fad diet or looking to get rich off all of the overweight people out there. Making a living/profit off of sound science and desire to share the knowledge is respectable.
It has only been 14 weeks and I am feeling very good with my results of 37.4 pounds down. I think that I will be satisfied with 45 more and I am taking it in "little bites".
Great book. I encourage you to make the change in your life too, as it is really something you can LIVE with!
It Works!.......2007-07-09
I was able to get off insulin and any other diabetes medication (I am type 2)
within a year by losing more than 100 lbs! You have to combine it with exercise of course, but it works!
Helped stopped Eating Disorders.......2007-05-28
I began following this book 2 weeks ago. I know that I don't really need to lose weight but having had eating disorders for over 40 years I am always searching for a way to lose a "few" pounds. Yes, I have lost 5 lbs.since starting the book, but the biggest plus of all is having my hunger satisfied to the point that I no longer suffer the constant craving of high sugar, high fat content foods to binge on. The dynamics behind the diet of regulating insulin is what its all about. It's only been 2 weeks, but so far for the first time in 40 years have I enjoy a normal relationship with food. Love this book!! It is so easy to follow and allows you plenty of good food all day. I'm grateful to have found it.

Well planned out.......2007-09-18
This book plans out your diet very easily and makes everything very blunt and easy to follow. I personally didn't stick to the diet because I began having bad stomach cramps, probably from such a drastic change, but if you're willing to try it, go for it. I know someone who saw fabulous results from it. So it's worth looking into.
Confusion!!.......2007-08-31
I just find it very confusing. I've been eating, what I thought, was very healthy for about the past 14 months and the book really contradicts most of what I've been told I was doing right!! Very confusing!
Not Too Profound.......2007-06-27
I did not have a profound experience utilizing this booklet and gave the booklet away after reading it. It's a skinny little booklet with a little information. In hindsight, I do not recommend this booklet. My recommendation is for the Atkin's book, New Diet Revolution, a great resource for eating healthy and is loaded with good practical information.
blood type o food , bev, supplemental list.......2007-06-13
Great to take on trips or just out to eat. It is also useful for those days your not feeling yourself and you need some remedies.
Diet book.......2007-06-10
This small in size large in content book is good to take along with you when you go food shopping. A lot of the foods I like, don't like me according to this book and I agree with 93% of this point of view. The book is a fast read and another good reference for you to consider while building your life time diet plan.

Good Study Guide.......2007-06-08
I meant to rate it less, I would probably give it a four. It's good for what it is, a study guide. You'll have to have science text books to help you study. The practice tests are helpful but some are shorter than the actual length of the real test.
There are not many praxis II study guides out there so I'd definitely recommend this one.
Useful, Boring, Informative.......2007-05-26
What can I say? It's a study guide for a test all Bio teacher wanna-bes gotta take. Not all that stimulating, unless you're really into the sciences. Still, it's useful for the praxis...and that's what it was made for.
Biology Praxis II Prep.......2007-05-03
This book was an excellent review for the Biology Praxis II. I am a career changer. I am in the process of changing from a career as a Scientist to a Biology Teacher. I need something to direct my preparation efforts for the Praxis II. I read over the topics and then took the practice exam just before taking the actual exam and I'm so glad I did. There were questions exactly like those on the exam. I was able to review topics from areas that aren't my expertise, plant biology, ecology, etc.
Great buy for Biology Praxis II Prep.
Study Guide.......2007-03-13
This book is exactly what I need to prepare for the Praxis II. The practice tests point out my weaknesses.
Book great, Shipping HORRIBLE.......2007-02-21
Ordered this book and it took numerous emails before they admitted that the order never left the warehouse. It took six weeks to get it!!! I needed it desperately to study for a test. No one at customer service seemed to care. Be very careful ordering anything "free super saver shipping" it pretty much means it can come pony express and amazon doesn't care!!!
Book Description
When first introduced, Contemporary Management, by Jones and George made a huge splash with its innovative voice, content, pedagogy, design, and package. The cutting-edge 4th Edition continues to redefine what principles of management texts should look, sound, and feel like. As an author team Gareth Jones and Jennifer George are uniquely qualified to write about both the strategic and organizational challenges managers face. No Management textbook author team today matches their combined research and text-writing experience. Contemporary Management is a comprehensive text that surveys the theoretical underpinnings of modern management thought and research. Through a variety of real world examples from small, medium, and large companies it shows the reader how those ideas are used by practicing managers. While the organization of this text follows the mainstream functional approach of planning, organizing, leading, and controlling its chapters can be used flexibly and instructors can organize their management course according to the format they are most comfortable with. One of the most popular features of the book has always been its focus on the "Manager as a Person," which discusses managers as real people with their own personalities, strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and problems. In the 4th Edition, the authors expand on this theme by discussing the importance of management competencies- the specific set of skills, abilities, and experiences that gives one manager the ability to perform at a higher level than another in a specific context. The themes of diversity, ethics, and information technology have also been greatly expanded in the 4th Edition through chapters dedicated to each of these topics as well as in-text examples, photographs, "unboxed" stories, and the end-of-chapter material- all areas of importance that truly serve to bring to life the workplace realities that today’s student will encounter in the course of a career.

Shipped Slowly.......2007-03-09
I was told there was over night shipping on this book which I requested. When it did not show up the next day I checked with the shipping company and they said it was sent 2nd day air. I phone Amazon and they confirmed there was no over night shipping. If I knew there was no over night shipping from Amazon I would have purchased it from another source because I needed it the next day.
Good but expensive........2007-02-16
I used this text while teaching an Introduction to Management class to undergraduates at SUNY. It is comprehensive, well produced, up-to-date and has a lot of engaging real world examples. However, it's very expensive.
Strengths:
- Business Week excerpts at the end of each chapter allow students to examine real companies and real managers
- Case problems are pitched at the right level - short, but with enough content to make the students think
- DVD has some excellent content, especially on the entrepreneurship chapter. Many "Hot Seat" segments depict provocative scenarios such as sexual harassment that engage students and stimulate discussion.
- Case materials are integrated into the text instead of being presented in "boxes" that disturb the chapter flow.
- Good material on women in management.
- Well produced
- Comprehensive: the only material I added was on problem-solving and analysis skills, and some extra depth in business strategy.
Could be better:
- The book lumps business strategy under "planning", which understates its importance. The boring material on business planning gets more space than the interesting topic of competitive strategy. The business strategy material focuses on SWOT analysis and (briefly) Porter's Five Forces model. I would have liked to see some material on the resource-based view - such as core competencies - which is intuitive enough for undergraduates.
- The online test material is mostly multiple choice/ fill in the missing word, and in my view tests facts more than management concepts. I found this entirely inadequate and used none of it. I ended up writing a lot of short answer questions.
- The authors use a strange selection of tools in the section on psychology. There is no mention of Myers-Briggs or Belbin, which are widely used in the real business world.
- The text is very expensive. I felt guilty asking some students to pay this much.
Good 'nuff.......2006-10-13
Used this book for a class. It is well organized and has plenty of thought-provoking exercizes. It presented ethics and morals as fluctuating things, based on the times and location - I don't agree with that stand. However, the book was good. The online material is awsome - good chapter notes, practice tests, and glossary.
Contemporary Management 4th Edition .......2005-09-29
The book was in very good condition and arrived just in time before classes began. Shipping was fast and the book was exactly what I needed.
